The Goos-H\"anchen (GH) shift describes a phenomenon in which a specularly-reflected beam is laterally translated along the reflecting surface such that the incident and reflected rays no longer intersect at the surface. Using a neutron spin-echo technique and a specially-designed magnetic multilayer mirror, we have measured the relative phase between the reflected up and down neutron spin states in total reflection. The relative GH shift calculated from this phase shows a strong resonant enhancement at a particular incident neutron wavevector, which is due to a waveguiding effect in one of the magnetic layers. Calculations based on the observed phase difference between the neutron states indicate a propagation distance along the waveguide layer of 0.65 mm for the spin-down state, which we identify with the magnitude of the giant GH shift. The existence of a physical GH shift is confirmed by the observation of neutron absorption in the waveguide layer. We propose ways in which our experimental method may be exploited for neutron quantum-enhanced sensing of thin magnetic layers.

Intra-particle entanglement of individual particles such as neutrons could enable another class of scattering probes that are sensitive to entanglement in quantum systems and materials. In this work, we present experimental results demonstrating quantum contextuality as a result of entanglement between the spin and energy modes (i.e., degrees of freedom) of single neutrons in a beam using a pair of resonant radio-frequency neutron spin flippers in the MIEZE configuration (Modulated IntEnsity with Zero Effort). We verified the mode-entanglement by measuring a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) contextuality witness $S$ defined in the spin and energy subsystems, observing a clear breach of the classical bound of $|S| \leq 2$, obtaining $S = 2.40 \pm 0.02$. These entangled beams could enable alternative approaches for directly probing dynamics and entanglement in quantum materials whose low-energy excitation scales match those of the incident entangled neutron., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We describe an experiment that strongly supports a two-path interferometric model in which the spin-up and spin-down components of each neutron propagate coherently along spatially separated parallel paths in a typical neutron spin echo small angle scattering (SESANS) experiment. Specifically, we show that the usual semi-classical, single-path treatment of Larmor precession of a polarized neutron in an external magnetic field predicts a damping as a function of the spin echo length of the SESANS signal obtained with a periodic phase grating when the transverse width of the neutron wave packet is finite. However, no such damping is observed experimentally, implying either that the Larmor model is incorrect or that the transverse extent of the wave packet is very large. In contrast, we demonstrate theoretically that a quantum-mechanical interferometric model in which the two mode-entangled (i.e. intraparticle entangled) spin states of a single neutron are separated in space when they interact with the grating accurately predicts the measured SESANS signal, which is independent of the wave packet width.

The development of direct probes of entanglement is integral to the rapidly expanding field of complex quantum materials. Here we test the robustness of entangled neutrons as a quantum probe by measuring the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt contextuality witness while varying the beam properties. Specifically, we prove that the entanglement of the spin and path subsystems of individual neutrons prepared in two different experiments using two different apparatuses persists even after varying the entanglement length, coherence length, and neutron energy difference of the paths. The two independent apparatuses acting as entangler-disentangler pairs are static-field magnetic Wollaston prisms and resonance-field radio frequency flippers. Our results show that the spatial and energy properties of the neutron beam may be significantly altered without reducing the contextuality witness value below the Tsirelson bound, meaning that maximum entanglement is preserved. We also show that two paths may be considered distinguishable even when separated by less than the neutron coherence length. This work is the key step in the realization of the new modular, robust technique of entangled neutron scattering.

A time of flight Modulation of IntEnsity by Zero Effort (MIEZE) spectrometer mode has been developed for the Larmor instrument at the ISIS pulsed neutron source. The instrument utilizes resonant neutron spin flippers which employ electromagnets with pole shoes, allowing the flippers to operate at frequencies of up to 3 MHz. Tests were conducted at modulation frequencies of 103 kHz, 413 kHz, 826 kHz and 1.03 MHz, resulting in a Fourier time range of ~0.1 ns to 30 ns using wavelength band of 4 {\AA}-11 {\AA}., Comment: Submitted to journal published

The development of qualitatively new measurement capabilities is often a prerequisite for critical scientific and technological advances. The dramatic progress made by modern probe techniques to uncover the microscopic structure of matter is fundamentally rooted in our control of two defining traits of quantum mechanics: discreteness of physical properties and interference phenomena. Magnetic Resonance Imaging, for instance, exploits the fact that protons have spin and can absorb photons at frequencies that depend on the medium to image the anatomy and physiology of living systems. Scattering techniques, in which photons, electrons, protons or neutrons are used as probes, make use of quantum interference to directly image the spatial position of individual atoms, their magnetic structure, or even unveil their concomitant dynamical correlations. None of these probes have so far exploited a unique characteristic of the quantum world: entanglement. Here we introduce a fundamentally new quantum probe, an entangled neutron beam, where individual neutrons can be entangled in spin, trajectory and energy. Its tunable entanglement length from nanometers to microns and energy differences from peV to neV will enable new investigations of microscopic magnetic correlations in systems with strongly entangled phases, such as those believed to emerge in unconventional superconductors. We develop an interferometer to prove entanglement of these distinguishable properties of the neutron beam by observing clear violations of both Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt and Mermin contextuality inequalities in the same experimental setup. Magnetic skyrmions are nano-sized topologically protected spin textures with particle-like properties. They can form lattices perpendicular to the magnetic field and the orientation of these skyrmion lattices with respect to the crystallographic lattice is governed by spin-orbit coupling. By performing small angle neutron scattering measurements, we investigate the coupling between the crystallographic and skyrmion lattices in both Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ and the archetype chiral magnet MnSi. The results reveal that the orientation of the skyrmion lattice is primarily determined by the magnetic field direction with respect to the crystallographic lattice. In addition, it is also influenced by the magnetic history of the sample which can induce metastable lattices. Kinetic measurements show that these metastable skyrmion lattices may or may not relax to their equilibrium positions under macroscopic relaxation times. We present a comprehensive Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy (NSE) study of the structural and dynamical aspects of the helimagnetic transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$ = 0.30. In contrast to the sharp transition observed in the archetype chiral magnet MnSi, the transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si is gradual and long-range helimagnetic ordering coexists with short-range correlations over a wide temperature range. The dynamics are more complex than in MnSi and involve long relaxation times with a stretched exponential relaxation which persists even under magnetic field. These results in conjunction with an analysis of the hierarchy of the relevant length scales show that the helimagnetic transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si differs substantially from the transition in MnSi and question the validity of a universal approach to the helimagnetic transition in chiral magnets.

The reference chiral helimagnet MnSi is the first system where skyrmion lattice correlations have been reported. At zero magnetic field the transition at $T_C$ to the helimagnetic state is of first order. Above $T_C$, in a region dominated by precursor phenomena, neutron scattering shows the build up of strong chiral fluctuating correlations over the surface of a sphere with radius $2\pi/\ell$, where $\ell$ is the pitch of the helix. It has been suggested that these fluctuating correlations drive the helical transition to first order following a scenario proposed by Brazovskii for liquid crystals. We present a comprehensive neutron scattering study under magnetic fields, which provides evidence that this is not the case. The sharp first order transition persists for magnetic fields up to 0.4 T whereas the fluctuating correlations weaken and start to concentrate along the field direction already above 0.2 T. Our results thus disconnect the first order nature of the transition from the precursor fluctuating correlations. They also show no indication for a tricritical point, where the first order transition crosses over to second order with increasing magnetic field. In this light, the nature of the first order helical transition and the precursor phenomena above $T_C$, both of general relevance to chiral magnetism, remain an open question.

We have studied how the magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO sputtered thin films vary as a function of thickness. The magnetic moment, measured by polarized neutron reflectometry, and the Curie temperature are found to decrease with reducing thickness. Our results indicate that the reduced number of nearest neighbors, band bending and the partial depopulation of the electronic states that carry the spins associated with the 4f orbitals of Eu are all contributing factors in the surface-induced change of the magnetic properties of EuO$_{1-x}$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We report and discuss the first neutron reflection measurements from the free surface of normal and superfluid 4He and of liquid 3He-4He mixture. In case of liquid 4He the surface roughness is different above and below the lambda transition, being smoother in the superfluid state. For the superfluid, we also observe the formation of a surface layer ~200 A thick which has a subtly different neutron scattering cross-section. The results can be interpreted as an enhancement of Bose-Einstein condensate fraction close to the helium surface. We find that the addition of 3He isotopic impurities leads to the formation of Andreev levels at low temperatures., Comment: LT25

The reflection of neutrons from a helium surface has been observed for the first time. The 4He surface is smoother in the superfluid state at 1.54 K than in the case of the normal liquid at 2.3 K. In the superfluid state we also observe a surface layer ~200 Angstroms thick which has a subtly different neutron scattering cross-section, which may be explained by an enhanced Bose-Einstein condensate fraction close to the helium surface., Comment: to be published in Low Temperature Physics

Polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) provides evidence that nonlocal electrodynamics governs the magnetic field penetration in an extreme low-k superconductor. The sample is an indium film with a large elastic mean free path (11 mkm) deposited on a silicon oxide wafer. It is shown that PNR can resolve the difference between the reflected neutron spin asymmetries predicted by the local and nonlocal theories of superconductivity. The role of dipolar interactions and anisotropy are important to obtain, otherwise forbidden, ferromagnetic ordering at finite temperature for ions arranged in two-dimensional (2D) arrays (monolayers). Here we demonstrate that conventional low temperature magnetometry and polarized neutron scattering measurements can be performed to study ferromagnetic ordering of in-plane spins in 2D systems using a multilayer stack of non-interacting monolayers of gadolinium ions. The spontaneous magnetization is absent in the heterogenous magnetic phase observed here and the saturation value of the net magnetization was found to depend on the applied magnetic field. The net magnetization rises exponentially with lowering temperature and then reaches saturation following a $T\ln(\beta T)$ dependence. These findings verify predictions of the spin-wave theory of 2D in-plane spin system with ferromagnetic interaction and will initiate further theoretical development., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publication
