The expansion of research methods in library and information studies (LIS) has not been followed by an expedited development of rigorous standards for innovative research evaluation. This article focuses on the lack of clear guidance for evaluating hermeneutic phenomenological studies and proposes to address the situation by introducing the 12 principles of evaluation. These principles can help authors implement quality control in the design and writing of hermeneutic phenomenological reports and help peer reviewers, trained in quantitative and mixed methods, evaluate qualitative studies on their own merit, with a set of unique and appropriate criteria, rather than with the standards suited for quantitative inquiry. The 12 principles are advocated as a means of fostering scientific empathy toward phenomenologists and toward the methodology itself. Scientific empathy is positioned as a way of bridging gaps in knowledge and understanding and nurturing a more collaborative spirit that supports the diversity of research methodologies. Building on the concept of transformative learning and exploring the role of reflection in graduate professional education, this article uses student and educator reflections from the graduate course on reading practices to narrate four stories of learning. These stories, structured based on the "4Ls" model of reflection, describe what was Learned and Liked in the course and what both the student and the educator Lacked and Longed for as a result of the course. An argument is made in support of not limiting Library and Information Science reading education to techniques and skills for providing reading suggestions (i.e., readers' advisory) but for enriching this education with reflective exercises, a theoretical foundation of reading behaviors, and challenging intellectual and affective engagements that will contribute to a well-rounded practitioner education that facilitates the reading experience.

This article makes a case for the inclusion of creative writing in Library & Information Science (LIS) courses. Using an example of the course on reading practices and audiences, it shows how creative writing can contribute to the development of creativity, critical thinking, ability for self-direction and independent learning--all the necessary skills for future leaders in the field of LIS. It presents a unique professor--student perspective on creative writing assignments and focuses on two case studies: the role of creative writing in validating students' personal experiences and previous educational background; and the importance of creative writing in fostering a skill of meaningful and engaging storytelling. It also analyzes several possible concerns related to the incorporation of creative writing in LIS courses, with a particular emphasis on the rigorous but flexible evaluation methods of students' creative work. The article will be of interest to LIS educators and LIS students, who, it is hoped, would become more involved in the direction of their graduate education.

This article continues the discussion of the experiences of disabled and neurodiverse Ph.D. students in Library and Information Science programs in American and Canadian universities, following up on the previous report that addressed their struggles during and in the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. This article directs attention to their experiences in Ph.D. programs irrespective of the pandemic and focuses on both existing barriers and support mechanisms. Based on the results of a qualitative, online, self-administered survey, guided by hermeneutic phenomenology, the study identifies barriers rooted in attitudes and perceptions; policies and procedures; information and communication; physical spaces; virtual spaces and technology; and access to support services and networks. At the same time, an only mitigating factor and an only sustainable and consistently mentioned support mechanism was the good will, compassion, and supportive actions of individual faculty members. The article places the analysis and interpretation of empirical data in the context of academic ableism, conceptualizing the situation of Ph.D. students as a lingering state that was not improved even through the lessons and experiences of the pandemic. Amid the growing body of research on disability and neurodiversity, disabled and neurodiverse Ph.D. students are not often in the focus, despite the fact that Ph.D. students occupy a unique position of a learner-scholar-teacher in academia. A particular gap is felt in the field of Library & Information Science (LIS). This study stands to address this gap by focusing on the experiences of disabled and neurodiverse Ph.D. students in American and Canadian LIS Programs during the COVID-19 pandemic and in its immediate aftermath. Guided by the Holistic Empowering Methodological Approach (HEMA) that puts participants in the driver's seat and allows them to determine the nature and extent of participation, the study spotlights participants' experiences during the remote learning and returning to campus phases of the lingering public health crisis. The findings show that while there was a fair balance of positive and negative experiences during the earlier stage of the pandemic, the stage of returning to campus was associated with additional challenges and an overwhelming number of negative experiences. The article addresses personal, program-related, and environmental factors in both positive and negative experiences, using the findings as a basis for conclusions and recommendations to Ph.D. program administrators and faculty. This article presents the Holistic Empowering Methodological Approach (HEMA), which is philosophically informed by the concept of diversity by design; epistemologically and methodologically guided by hermeneutic phenomenology; and supported by the method of qualitative survey combined with the Single Question Aimed at Inducing Narrative (SQUIN) technique. This is a methodological conceptual article whereby the development and application of the HEMA is illustrated through the study that examined the learning and professional development experiences of disabled and neurodiverse PhD students in library and information science (LIS) programs amid the lingering COVID-19 pandemic and explored their academic lifeworlds. The article critically assesses the merits and shortcomings of the HEMA and provides other researchers with a roadmap for replicating the HEMA in every phase of research: from brainstorming to the selection of methods, to data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. In so doing, the article also strives to reaffirm the vitality of rigorous qualitative methodology in studying underresearched, minoritized, and marginalized communities. From the scholarly worldview to specific methodological choices, this framework advocates for the type of research that puts participants in the "driver's seat," giving them agency and providing the opportunity for self-definition and self-determination. The nuanced presentation of a holistic methodological approach, with particular attention paid to the issues of methodological rigor and quality control, will be of benefit to both beginner and seasoned researchers and can serve as an educational aid in research methods courses and dissertation supervision. Library and Information Science (LIS) literature on employee engagement is scarce, with most publications focusing on a related concept of job satisfaction. This article, however, contributes to an understanding of engagement experiences as manifested by public librarians in the context of working with immigrant communities. The study, guided by hermeneutic phenomenology and conducted through qualitative interviews, relies on William Kahn's classical theory of employee engagement and investigates the expression of three components—meaningfulness, safety, and availability—in the work of these individuals. The sample is recruited from library staff serving immigrant populations in large metropolitan libraries in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and New York City, USA. The study concludes that the most important component of engagement in this research population is the meaningfulness of one's work which, in itself, is a composite and complex concept, elucidated in great detail in the study. Meaningfulness is followed by the availability of energies invested in librarians' workplace roles, with safety as the least significant factor. The study observes that librarians' approach to working with immigrants is akin to following a calling, not simply performing work-related duties. It also notes that the phenomenon of vocational awe influences and accounts for librarians' dedicated and committed service to immigrant communities even when the workplace safety net is tentative and uncertain. Unsurprisingly, there are also disparities in how different segments of the faculty community have been affected - it is clear that the pandemic has "disproportionately affected ... women, Black, brown, gay, nonbinary and disabled faculty members", while "faculty of color also often come from or have family or friends in communities with high rates of COVID-19" (CHE [6], 5; Weyandt et al. [25]). I have been repeatedly impressed by how the directors within our college supported faculty and how faculty supported each other, staff, and the student body throughout the period of pandemic-related social restrictions. Since the start of the pandemic and the related major disruptions introduced to all aspects of university work and life, one invariable focus has been on students and the effects of dislocation, lockdown, illness, and isolation, not only on their academic performance and career advancement but also on their physical well-being and mental health. Fortunately, the university offered pandemic accommodations, including 1-year COVID-19 tenure extensions, work-from-home options for faculty and staff, and teaching accommodations for those with health issues during this time. This article presents an information science perspective on Social Work (SW) education based on the results of a comparative policy content evaluation (PCE) of accreditation documents in Canada and the U.S. It investigates to what extent information and technology education (ITE) is integral to the accreditation documents that guide the SW curriculum in both countries. Empirical results are presented in the context of current advances in information science, technology, and artificial intelligence affecting the practice of SW, social justice, and social change. With accreditation documents viewed as stage-setters for SW programs, it is proposed that technology- and information-driven change may not be reflected in the SW curriculum design in an adequate or timely fashion but is seen as a bonus, not essential knowledge. The evolving field of Book History has had difficulty in integrating the experiences of immigrant culture. In explaining the origins of print culture in North America, Book History has a tendency to associate lowbrow with immigrants and their struggles to establish a foothold in a new land. Book History therefore symbolically defines immigrant culture as other, institutionalizing a hierarchy so that highbrow or learned culture is privileged. Drawing upon the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Homi Bhabha, this paper suggests that this cultural distinction is not only a contingent classificatory choice that sends a fraught ideological message, but one that should be replaced by the idea of hybridity. Although fiction plays a prominent role in the interdisciplinary field of medical humanities (MH), it is physically and intellectually isolated from non-fiction in academic health sciences libraries. Using the Literature, Arts, and Medicine Database (LAMD) as a tool for selection and subject analysis, we suggest a method of integrating fiction with non-fiction through the application of non-literary classification numbers and subject headings to improve physical and bibliographic access to medical humanities collections.
