Objective: Diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is proposed as a therapeutic method in various medical concerns. This study aimed to compare the effects of PBM at the wavelengths of 660, 808, or 660 + 808 nm on alveolar bone healing in diabetic rats. Methods: Bilateral maxillary first molars were extracted from diabetic Wistar rats (n = 36). Right-sided sockets were treated by an In-Ga-Al-P laser at 660 nm (7.2 J/cm², 24 s; DM660), Ga-Al-As laser at 808 nm (7 J/cm², 14 s; DM808), or a combination of these two sets (DM-dual) (n = 12). Left sides served as controls. On days 7 or 14, specimens were assigned for histomorphometric or real-time PCR analysis of runt-related transcription factor 2, osteocalcin, collagen I, and vascular endothelial growth factor expression. Results: Irradiated sockets of groups DM-808 and DM-dual showed a significant increase in bone tissue and blood vessel establishment as compared to DM-660. Further, group DM-dual exhibited the least amount of fibrotic tissue as compared to the other groups. Conclusions: Within our study limits, the present experiment suggested PBM at 808 nm, alone or combined with 660 nm irradiation, could promote alveolar bone healing, along withminimal fibrosis induction, in diabetic rats. Background: With ageing, the number of systemic diseases and the consumption of drugs increase. Moreover, some oral lesions, especially denture-related lesions, are commonly observed. Aim and Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of systemic diseases and oral lesions in the elderly in the Mashhad Geriatric Institutes. Methods: Institutionalized elderly people, who could cooperate for oral examination, enrolled in this descriptive cross-sectional study. The frequency of oral lesions and their systemic diseases were recorded in the self-made checklist. For statistical analysis, Student's t-test and Chi-square test were utilized. The significance level was considered to be 0.05. Results: During the study, 224 elderly subjects with a mean age of 75.63 ± 11.22 years were evaluated. The mean duration of residency in the elderly nursing centres was 1.87 ± 1.37 years. Hypertension, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes were the most common systemic diseases, and about 47% of the patients had two or multiple concurrent diseases. Among participants, 97.1% had at least one oral lesion. The most common oral lesions were fissured tongue (75%), sublingual varicosity (68.3%) and hairy or coated tongue (38.4%), respectively, which are classified as normal variations of oral mucosa. The most common pathological lesions were denture stomatitis, frictional keratosis and lichenoid reactions. Conclusion: Regarding to the high frequency of oral lesions among ageing people, regular examination of the oral mucosa for early detection of oral lesions and appropriate treatments is recommended. Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common diseases of the oral mucosa, which exact pathogenesis remains unknown. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species could play an important role in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to compare the salivary levels of uric acid, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and albumin in the patients with oral lichen planus and healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with oral lichen planus and 30 healthy subjects, who were matched for age and sex, were enrolled in this case-control study. The salivary concentration of uric acid, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and albumin were examined in these individuals using the spectrophotometry and coulometric technique. The data were analyzed through Mann-Whitney test and T test by SPSS software (ver. 19). Results: Salivary uric acid and albumin levels in patients with oral lichen planus and healthy controls were not statistically different (p > 0.05); however, the concentrations of salivary superoxide dismutase in OLP patients (660.4 ± 266.4 U/g protein) and healthy controls (935.73 ± 561.9 U/g protein) were significantly different (p < 0/05). Also, salivary glutathione peroxidase levels in healthy controls (1049.98 ± 964.56 mU/mL) were remarkably higher than OLP patients (244.12 ± 170.78 mU/mL) (p < 0/001). Conclusion: The salivary superoxide dismutase concentration, as an indicator of antioxidant system, in OLP patients was significantly higher than healthy subjects. The glutathione peroxidase levels in these patients were remarkably lower than healthy controls. It is suggestive that these markers could be effective in pathogenesis of OLP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of zinc finger protein 510 (ZNF510) in the saliva of patients with oral lichen planus and healthy individuals in 2019. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was performed on 24 patients with oral lichen planus and 25 healthy individuals referred to the School of Dentistry, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran, between June and October 2019. In the case group, the severity of lesions was determined according to the Thongprasom index. Unstimulated saliva was collected from the subjects and the samples were examined for the presence of the ZNF510 protein using ELISA method. The data were statistically analyzed through SPSS 23. For data analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the independent t-test, the independent samples Kruskal- Wallis test, and one-way analysis of variance were used. Results: This study included 32 females (65.3%), and 17 males (34.7%). The subjects’ age range was between 23-70 years and the mean age of them was 46.26 ± 10.90 years. The mean ZNF510 (ppm) in the case group was 86.12 ± 34.88, while in the control group, it was 46.43 ± 23.32. The two groups were significantly different in terms of the mean ZNF510 (P <0.001). In patients with non-keratotic lichen planus, the mean ZNF510 was significantly higher than that in those with keratotic lesions (P = 0.028). Moreover, in patients with oral lichen planus, the severity of lesions according to the Thongprasom index was significantly and directly related to the ZNF510 concentration (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The concentration of ZNF510 protein in the saliva can be a good indicator for assessing the severity of oral lichen planus lesions and its diagnosis. Objective: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disease, which is considered as a potentially malignant condition and could transformed into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Squamous cell carcinmoma is the most common oral cancer. This study aimed to compare salivary thioredoxin levels as an antioxidant protein among patients with OSSC, OLP and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: Twenty‐eight patients with OLP, 20 patients with OSCC and 40 healthy people enrolled in this observational study. Saliva samples were collected from all subjects and salivary thioredoxin levels were evaluated by Elisa test. The data were recorded in the check lists and analyzed using SPSS (ver.17). Results: Thioredoxin levels of healthy controls were insignificantly higher than OLP and SCC patients (p = 0.135). There was a statistically remarkable indirect relationship between thioredoxin levels and severity of the lesions determined by Thongprasom criteria among OLP patients. The thioredoxin concentration was significantly higher in the keratotic OLP. Among the OSCC patients, the highest levels of thioredoxin were found among patients aged more than 65 years. Salivary thioredoxin levels based on other variables were not significantly different between the studied groups. Conclusion: In this study, there was not any significant difference between salivary thioredoxin levels in the OLP and OSCC patients, though it was unremarkable higher in the healthy group compared to the patients; therefore, the role of thioredoxin in the cellular oxidation–reduction status could be suggested; however, further studies are recommended. Introduction: Colon adenocarcinoma is one of the foremost causes of cancer mortality. Oral metastasis of colon adenocarcinoma is, however, rare and indicates an end-stage disease process. Case Report: We report a case of a 69-year-old female with a gingival mass diagnosed with colon adenocarcinoma and liver metastasis after one year. A swelling was found in the maxillary right buccal and lingual gingiva during physical examination. Tissue biopsy revealed an intestinal metastatic adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent chemotherapy for treatment. We also reviewed all reported cases of gingival metastasis due to colon adenocarcinoma. Conclusion: Careful examination of the oral cavity in patients with the adenocarcinomas of various organs is beneficial in the early diagnosis of metastasis since the most frequent metastatic lesion of the oral cavity is adenocarcinoma. Background: Lichen planus is an autoimmune disorder and is associated with other autoimmune diseases. There is, however, little evidence of the association of oral lichen planus with celiac disease. The aim of this work was to investigate, for the first time, such an association in patients in the city of Mashhad, Iran. Methods: This case-control study was performed during October 2017 to March 2018 in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, in Iran. All participants were evaluated for Anti-TTG (IgA) and Total IgA, and in some cases for Anti-TTG IgG. Data were analyzed using SPSS software v.20. Results: A total of 96 subjects were considered in the study; 32 in the case group, and the rest in the control group. The mean value of Anti-TTG IgA was 0.12 ± 1.51 Au/ml in the oral lichen planus group, while it was 0.57 ± 1.20 Au/ml in the control group with no significant difference (P=0.167). The mean value of the Total IgA was 134.96 ± 42.86 mg/dl in the lichen planus group, and it was 129.85 ± 55.28 mg/dl in the control group, as they differ negligibly either (P=0.639). Moreover, celiac disease was not present in the population. Conclusions: We showed that there was no celiac disease present in the oral lichen planus patients as well as healthy subjects. Background:Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity. Despite some improvements in treatment, the survival rate is still very low, mainly due to the possible development of secondary malignancy or metastasis. Clinical and pathological features as well as molecular biomarkers might predict the recurrence. In recent years, many studies have been carried out on molecular biomarkers that can predict the prognosis of OSCC. One of these markers is the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which has led to different results. The aim of this study was to determine EGFR level in OSCC and to analyze its correlation with clinicopathological features. Methods: A total of 62 paraffin-embedded samples from OSCC patients treated in the oncology department of the Omid Hospital in the city of Mashhad, Iran were selected and EGFR staining was performed. The clinical and histopathological data were extracted from the medical records. Results: EGFR expression was positive in 98.4% of the cases. There was a significant difference between EGFR expression in the tumor and control cases in terms of cellularity and intensity (p˂0.001 and p=0.004, respectively). No statistically significant correlation was observed between EGFR and clinicopathological parameters. There was also no significant relationship between the cellularity and intensity expression of EGFR and patient survival (p=0.92 and p=0.42, respectively). Conclusion: In view of the high EGFR expression in squamous cell carcinoma, further studies on the role of EGFR in cell processes such as proliferation, angiogenesis and differentiation of the tumor are recommended. Objective: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a debilitating disorder with few limited treatment modalities. Because of the proven association between BMS symptoms, and depression and anxiety, treatment modalities that alleviate the two latter etiologic factors can be clinically effective. Thus, owing to the antidepressant and potential analgesic effects of crocin (as an active constituent of saffron), the present study was performed to compare the effect of crocin and citalopram (as control) on BMS symptoms and depression/anxiety in patients with BMS. Materials and Methods: The present double-blind randomized clinical trial was carried out on BMS patients. Patients were randomly divided into citalopram (n=21) and crocin (n=26) groups and treated for 11 weeks. BMS symptoms (based on Visual Analysis Scale (VAS)), as well as anxiety and depression (based on Hamilton questionnaire) were evaluated at baseline and during the treatment period. Mann-Whitney, Chi-Square test, Independent ttest, Friedman, and Spearman correlation were employed for statistical analysis. Results: Our findings showed a significant effect for crocin on the severity of BMS symptoms, anxiety and depression in BMS patients. Conclusion: Crocin can be considered for treatment of BMS subjects with concurrent anxiety and/or depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a malignant neoplasm, which accounts for 5-10% of all salivary gland tumors (1). About 50% of these tumors originate from intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate (1). Three clinically obvious characteristics of AdCC include slow growth rate, perineural invasion and high incidence of distant metastasis (1). The most commonly-affected sites of distant metastasis are bone, liver and brain, followed by lungs (2). Lymph node metastases are rare; The most common sites involved by hematogenous spread are lungs (2). Introduction: Oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC) is a rare malignancy of the oral cavity that was first described by Ackerman. This tumor is a well-differentiated low-grade, slow growing cancer that is locally invasive without metastasis. Ameloblastoma is one of the most common odontogenic tumors, which originates from the odontogenic epithelium. Verrucous carcinoma along with central ambloblastoma is a rare phenomenon. Case Report: A case of verrucous carcinoma along with central ambloblastoma in a 49-year-old man, which was referred with a painless exophytic lesion with a verrucous and granular surface, is reported. Panoramic radiography revealed a well-defined radiolucency with sclerotic borders. To the best available knowledge, this phenomenon has not yet been reported. Conclusion: Verrucous carcinoma could occur in the wall of odontogenic cysts and tumors and should be considered during the differential diagnosis of a radiolucency, which is observed in the jaws with rapid growth or which presents some changes from its previous appearance. Introduction: Oral lesions are among the earliest clinical manifestations of human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection and are important in early diagnosis and for monitoring the progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral lesions and their relationship with a number of factors in HIV/AIDS patients attending an HIV center. Materials and Methods: A total of 110 HIV-positive patients were examined to investigate the prevalence of oral lesions according to the criteria established by the European Community Clearing House on Oral Problems Related to HIV Infection. An independent T-test was used for correlation of oral lesions with CD4+ count and a χ ² test was used for analysis of the relationship of coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), sexual contact, route of transmission, history of drug abuse, and history of incarceration. Results: Most of the cases were male patients (82.7%). The mean age across all participants was 36.2±8.1 years. Rampant carries, severe periodontitis and oral candidiasis were the most notable oral lesions. Oral lesions were more prevalent in patients between 26-35 years of age. There was a significant difference between patients with and without pseudomembranous candidiasis and angular cheilitis according to mean level of CD4+. Kindler syndrome (KS) is a rare, autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by skin blistering and photosensitivity in infancy, progressive poikiloderma, and diffuse cutaneous atrophy. It affects the skin, mucous membranes, and oral cavity and is caused by mutations in the KIND1 gene on 20p12.3. The first case of KS associated with periodontitis was reported in 1996, and have been infrequently reported since. Oral cavity T-cell lymphoma occurs rarely. This case report describes a patient with such a tumor. The case was a 75 years old man presented with a painless swelling on his hard palate mucosa. He had suffered from nose- bleeding and nasal obstruction. Pathology revealed the presence of a T-cell lymphoma tumor in the palate. Though rare, the signs and symptoms of the case suggest that T-cell lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral cavity lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
