Formalin is a dangerous food preservative which has been banned to be used. Formalin is often used because it is relatively cheap and simple to use. This study aimed to analyze the effect of formalin to damage liver histology of male mice. Mice used were male mice Balb/C strain aged 4 weeks and weighted 20 to 22 grams. The extract of formalin-added-tofu, which were the concentration of: 0.1%, 1.68%, and 3.35%, 5.1%, 6.7%, were given orally per day for 12 weeks. At the end of 12th week, the mice were dissected and the liver were taken which then made preparations. The liver histological preparations were observed under a dino lite microscope in five different visual field, with a magnification of 800 times. For each of field of views, 20 cells were randomly counted. The average of weighted score of histopathological liver of five field of views then were randomly calculated for each mice. The scoring model used was Histopathology Manja Roenigk. The total of damage percentage occurred was recorded and calculated. The results showed that oral exposure to formaldehyde increases the amount of damage significantly in male mice strain Balb/C. The research results were presented in the form of booklets as a means of communication to the public media to broaden the danger of formalin-added-tofu. The booklet was made in order to perform the role of education as an agent of society renewal insight and knowledge. PURPOSE: To investigate the hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity of 3-Bromopyruvate (3BP) in mice. METHODS: Fifteen nude mice were grafted subcutaneously in the left flank with MDA-MB-231 cells, then all mice were divided into control group (PBS), 3BP group (8 mg/kg), positive group (DNR: 0.8 mg/kg) when tumor volume reached approximately 100 mm 3 . 28 days later, tumors, livers and kidneys were stored in 4 % formalin solution and stained with hematoxylin and eosin staining. The Kunming mice experiment included control group (PBS), 3BP group (4mg/kg; 8mg/kg; 16mg/kg), positive group (DNR: 0.8 mg/kg). 24 hours later, the blood were used for the determination of hepatic damage serum biomarkers. Livers were stored in 4 % formalin solution for the later detection. RESULTS: 3BP at the dose of 8mg/kg had a good effect on inhibiting tumor growth in nude mice and did not damage liver and kidney tissues. Kunming mice experiment showed 3BP at the dose of 16mg/kg did damage to liver tissues. CONCLUSION: 3-Bromopyruvate at the dose of suppressing tumor growth did not exhibit hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in nude mice, and the effect on liver was confirmed in Kunming mice. To confirm whether the microbubble activated by sonication causes liver damage, the authors performed two experiments. Experiment 1 followed Shigeta's experiment. As an ultrasound contrast agent (UCA), Levovist was used and sonicated by Acuson Sequoia™ 512 by Siemens. Wister rats of 300 g were divided into four groups: (A) administration of ultrasonic contrast agent (UCA) and ultrasonic exposure, (B) administration of UCA, (C) ultrasonic exposure, and (D) control. Experiment 1 did not show the evidence of hepatic damage such as Shigeta et al. reported. Hence, we conducted Experiment 2 with a much higher acoustic output. But no clear damage was observed in both optical and electron microscopic specimens.

The formation oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation products in chicken and pork under two different methods of cooking were studied. Samples of chicken and pig muscles previously dosed with OTC residues were subjected to boiling or microwave treatment, and the residues were extracted in a mixture of citrate buffer-MeOH (75:25 v/v), and then analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection using a XBridgeTM C18 reverse-phase chromatographic column. Thermal treatment resulted in the degradation of OTC and the concentrations of the degradation products α-apo-oxytetracycline (α-apo-OTC) and β-apo-oxytetracycline (β-apo-OTC) in muscle samples amounted to 0.7 to 1.2 % of the initial OTC content. The toxic effects of the degradation products of oxytetracycline, α-apo-OTC and β-apo-OTC were studied in rats. Male rats received oral doses of 10 mg/kg body weight/day of either α-apo-OTC, β-apo-OTC, 90 days. The results of this study suggest that the toxic effects of β-apo-OTC treatment could damage liver and kidney tissues of rats, as well as lead to the degeneration and necrosis in the hepatocytes.

Estrogens have an unusual toxic effect on the liver of two hamster species, the Armenian and the Chinese hamster. The hepatotoxicity was detectable clinically by hyperbilirubinemia and confirmed histologically by the presence of hepatic degenerative-regenerative changes. Administration of tamoxifen with estrogen [either ethynyl estradiol or diethylstilbestrol (DES)] completely abrogated the hepatotoxic effects, suggesting that estrogen receptor (ER) was necessary for estrogen to damage liver. In Armenian hamsters, estrogens decreased hepatic synthesis of female protein (FP); tamoxifen also abolished this DES effect and resulted in a net increase in serum FP levels. DES administration produced higher serum bilirubin levels and lower serum FP levels in females than in males. Paradoxically, tamoxifen blocked these DES effects more effectively and efficiently in females than in males. Estrogens did not injure uteri of Armenian and Chinese hamsters and were nontoxic to livers of other hamsters species, such as Syrian and Turkish. This model provides another perspective of the acute cellular derangement that can be effected by estrogen-ER complex and may indicate a yet unknown mode of ER action.
