Neutron diffraction with magnesium isotope substitution, high energy x-ray diffraction, and
29 Si,27 Al, and25 Mg solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were used to measure the structure of glassy diopside (CaMgSi2 O6 ), enstatite (MgSiO3 ), and four (MgO)x (Al2 O3 )y (SiO2 )1−x−y glasses, with x = 0.375 or 0.25 along the 50 mol. % silica tie-line (1 − x − y = 0.5) or with x = 0.3 or 0.2 along the 60 mol. % silica tie-line (1 − x − y = 0.6). The bound coherent neutron scattering length of the isotope25 Mg was remeasured, and the value of 3.720(12) fm was obtained from a Rietveld refinement of the powder diffraction patterns measured for crystalline25 MgO. The diffraction results for the glasses show a broad asymmetric distribution of Mg–O nearest-neighbors with a coordination number of 4.40(4) and 4.46(4) for the diopside and enstatite glasses, respectively. As magnesia is replaced by alumina along a tie-line with 50 or 60 mol. % silica, the Mg–O coordination number increases with the weighted bond distance as less Mg2+ ions adopt a network-modifying role and more of these ions adopt a predominantly charge-compensating role.25 Mg magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR results could not resolve the different coordination environments of Mg2+ under the employed field strength (14.1 T) and spinning rate (20 kHz). The results emphasize the power of neutron diffraction with isotope substitution to provide unambiguous site-specific information on the coordination environment of magnesium in disordered materials. Literature about him informs that he left home due to abuse perpetrated by his father, known as someone violent who frequently assaulted his family members. After getting involved with gambling while passing through Tiradentes Square, Febronio extinguished his financial resources, which set the beginning of his passage, composed of several crimes. During his passage through the Republic s capital then, Febrônio stole, commited murders, illegaly performed some professions such as doctor and dentist amongst other infractions. Being a repeat offender, he caught the attention of the news of that time (1919 1939), also catching the eye of doctors and lawyers, worried about comprehending the reasons that bring someone to commit crimes against the current social order. Three newspapers were investigated: Correio da Manhã; A Noite; and O Paiz. The access to those newspapers was possible through the digital library of the National Library (http://memoria.bn.br/). Initially, a thorough search on all editions of those newspapers was made, among the aforementioned years. After identifying the articles, the main passages were transcribed, preserving the language present there. A series of informations relevant to the comprehension of the case were brought up: detentions, crimes, victims, authorities positioning regarding Febrônio. The newspapers contemplated the victims , the witnesses and other people s testimonies, who, as they described the crimes, highlighted the author s skin color. In O Paiz September 14th, 1927 s headline, for example, one of the victims emphasized that Febrônio was a mulatto . Such posture was signaled by Peter Fry (1941-), British anthropologist and commentator of the case, when he reported that the witnesses and victims testified as if they brought a memorized lesson. This allows us to visualize how last century s society perceived the mixed race individuals, pointing to the racial prejudice as present for a long time and reinforced by the press, which also served to the scientific debate of that time, through the dissemination of Febronio s report, elaborated by the psychiatrist Carrilho and the divulging of other specialist s opinions, such as the psychiatrists Juliano Moreira, Adauto Botelho and Mauricio Urstein. It will be tackled how Rio de Janeiro s press announced the Febrônio case through the medic-psychiatric debate set in Brasil during the beginning of the 20th century and, after that, how people referred to Febrônio during interview mediated by the press and during police questioning Durante os anos 1920 e 1930 a imprensa carioca se debruçou sobre os crimes cometidos por Febrônio Índio do Brasil (1895-1984), um indivíduo natural de São Miguel de Jequitinhonha (MG) e que havia chegado ao Rio de Janeiro quando contava cerca de 14 anos de idade.

•25Mg solid state NMR of isotopically enriched enstatite and diopside glasses.•Simulations of distributions of quadrupolar coupling parameters for 25Mg MAS together with static wideline spectra using the Czjzek model.•25Mg quadrupolar coupling parameters and isotropic chemical shifts for enstatite and diopside glasses are revised.•Satellite transitions are observed in static 25Mg WURST-CPMG spectra.•Due to the lack of site-resolution, the NMR data are likely to be represented by a superposition of multiple sites with different Mg coordination numbers, consistent with diffraction data.
