Changes in land use due to deforestation can affect the diversity, composition, and structure of fauna communities, including termites. This study aims to examine the diversity, composition, and structure of the termite community in several land uses. Land uses include natural forest, secondary forest, plantation of oil palm, and settlements in Dharmasraya District, West Sumatra Province. The research was conducted to determine the distribution of species and termite colonies in Dharmasraya District. The research method used observation on the level of habitat disturbance. The observations were conducted on 50 m x 10 m plots. One plot was split into 5 m x 5 m sub-plots, and there were 20 sub-plots in total. Termite samples collected from each plot were identified in the laboratory. This study found 14 species of termites on different land uses in Dharmasraya Regency West Sumatra Province. The level of disturbance of land use types affects the composition and structure of termites within it, especially from taxon groups and their food groups, and there are similarities in termite species composition in natural forests and secondary forests and and also similarities on termite species composition in oil palm plantations and settlements.

Abstract Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Insect populations have declined significantly over the last few decades. Anthropogenic factors such as deforestation, land-use change, climate change, and pesticides play a major role in insect population decline. In addition to those factors, insects also face challenges from air, noise, and light pollution derived from human activities. Light pollution in the form of artificial light at night (ALAN) is generally known to be one of the factors driving insect declines but it has rarely been studied in Indonesia. In this literature review, we collected empirical evidence from previous studies to provide a comprehensive report on the impact of ALAN on insects. Most studies demonstrate a decline in insect populations in areas with high ALAN intensity, such as urban areas. Furthermore, ALAN was reported to disrupt insect visual systems, which results in disturbances to predator avoidance and foraging movements. Until now, most work related to artificial light in Indonesia have focused on light as a method of controlling pests. Hence, studies related to artificial light as a pollutant are urgently needed to increase our understanding of the effects of ALAN on the survival of organisms, especially insects. Future research must seek suitable solutions to create environmentally and ecologically friendly conditions for various organisms, especially those susceptible to the negative effects of light, such as insects.

Feeding behavior and biological response of the adult beetle Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) on plastic as feed. The beetle Tenebrio molitor has potential as a plastic decomposer. Plastic can also be degraded by exposure to sunlight. The aim of this research was to determine the feeding behavior and biological responses of T. molitor exposed to various type of plastics. Seven types of plastics, namely bioplastics (Bio), expanded styrofoam (EPS), oxo-biodegradable (Oxo), three plastics Bio-P, EPS-P, Oxo-P that had been exposed to sunlight, and controls contained a mixed pollard-carrots slices were tested on four days-old of adult T. molitor. The choice feeding method was carried out at day and night by releasing 200 and 300 beetles in the middle of a ±15 cm diameter petri dish divided into 7 radial spaces, and their movement were observed within 24 hours. The forced feeding method for observing biological responses was carried out by releasing 10 male and female beetles in a petri dish as described above. The results showed that around 32–39% of the beetle population visited most of the pollard feed. In the feed treatment without pollard, 20% of the beetles chose EPS, EPS-P and Bio. Beetles survived 23 and 40 days on Bio and Bio-P feed, respectively. Egg production by the beetles exposed to the Bio and Bio-P diets was 2 and 3 eggs/female/10 days. Around 85% of pollard feed consumed contributed to 5% of body weight gain. About 58–64% of Bio, Bio-P, EPS, EPS-P and 6–12% Oxo, Oxo-P feeds were successfully consumed. The decrease in its body weight occurred in all plastic feed treatments ranging from 13–28%.

Abstract Background In the last decades, Southeast Asia has experienced massive conversion of rainforest into rubber and oil palm monoculture plantations. The effects of this land-use change on canopy arthropods are still largely unknown. Arboreal Collembola are among the most abundant canopy arthropods in tropical forests, potentially forming a major component of the canopy food web by contributing to the decomposition of arboreal litter and being an important prey for canopy arthropod predators. We investigated abundance, richness, and community composition of, as well as the influence of a series of environmental factors on, canopy Collembola communities in four land-use systems in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia: (1) lowland rainforest, (2) jungle rubber (rubber agroforest), and monoculture plantations of (3) rubber and (4) oil palm. Results Using canopy fogging in 32 research plots in both the dry and rainy seasons in 2013, we collected 77,104 specimens belonging to 68 (morpho) species. Generally, Collembola communities were dominated by few species including two species of the genus Salina (Paronellidae; 34% of total individuals) and two species of Lepidocyrtinae (Entomobryidae; 20%). The abundance of Collembola in lowland rainforest (53.4 ± 30.7 ind. m−2) was more than five times higher than in rubber plantations, and more than ten times higher than in oil palm plantations; abundances in jungle rubber were intermediate. Collembola species richness was highest in rainforest (18.06 ± 3.60 species) and jungle rubber (16.88 ± 2.33 species), more than twice that in rubber or oil palm. Collembola community composition was similar in rainforest and jungle rubber, but different from monoculture plantations which had similar Collembola community composition to each other. The environmental factors governing community composition differed between the land-use systems and varied between seasons. Conclusions Overall, this is the first in-depth report on the structure of arboreal Collembola communities in lowland rainforest and agricultural replacement systems in Southeast Asia. The results highlight the potentially major consequences of land-use change for the functioning of arboreal arthropod food webs.

Spodopotera frugiperda is a worldwide invasive pest that has caused significant economic damage. According to the classical biological control approach, natural enemies that can control invasive pests come from the same area of origin as the pests that have experienced coadaptation processes. However, the new association’s approach suggests that local natural enemies are equally capable of controlling invasive pests. Due to the lack of data on the association of S. frugiperda and local natural enemies, research was conducted through a rapid survey to study the diversity of parasitoids associated with S. frugiperda. The results showed 15 parasitoid species associated with S. frugiperda. Four egg parasitoids, eight larval parasitoids, and three larval–pupal parasitoids were found to be associated with S. frugiperda for three years after it was first discovered in Indonesia. Eleven of them are new reports of parasitoids associated with S. frugiperda in Indonesia. A new association was found between S. frugiperda and twelve parasitoid species, consisting of three egg parasitoids (Platygasteridaesp.01, Platygasteridaesp.02, and Telenomus remus), six larval parasitoids (Apanteles sp., Microplitis sp., Campoletis sp., Coccygidium sp., Eupelmus sp., and Stenobracon sp.), and three larval–pupal parasitoids (Brachymeria lasus, B. femorata, and Charops sp.). Telenomus remus is the most dominant parasitoid, with a higher abundance and parasitism rate. The result suggests another method for selecting biological control using the new association approach since local natural enemies can foster quick adaptation to invasive pests.

Decomposition is an important process in nature, as it can break down organic matter into smaller particles and nutrients. Nutrients are returned to the environment and can be reused by other organisms. One important organism that plays a role in the decomposition process is termites because termites are able to decompose organic matter such as wood in all habitats. Different termite habitats can be seen in terms of different types of land use. Some types of land use, such as natural forests, secondary forests, palm oil plantations, and settlements, can be used as a test site for wood decomposition by termites. All types of land use can be found in Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra Province. The purpose of this study was to study the decomposition of wood by termites in several different types of land use. Four types of land use are selected from habitats with the least disturbed conditions to the extent of high habitat disturbances, namely natural forests, secondary forests, palm oil plantations, and settlements. The study was conducted in Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra Province. The research method uses pine wood bait (Pinus merkusii), measuring 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm x 25 cm. The wooden bait is winded for seven days, and the wood bait is weighed to gain its initial weight and measured moisture content. Furthermore, wood bait that has been installed is observed and re-weighed to gain final weight and measured water content. The results showed that deforestation in Dharmasraya, West Sumatra had an effect on reducing wood decomposition by termites. Five (5) termite species were found in wood bait, including Pericapritermes sp.1, Microtermes sp.1, Schedorhinotermes sp.1, Macrotermes gilvus, and Coptotermes curvignathus.

Diversity and abundance of leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) at four different landuse in Bukit Duabelas National Park and Harapan Forest, Jambi Province. Deforestation has a negative impact toward ecosystem and diversity. Landuse change has been known to negatively impact insect like ant and beetle in Jambi Province. This research aims to study the diversity, abundance, and composition of the leaf beetle in the Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD) and Harapan Forest landscape. Insect sampling was carried out using canopy fogging method. Four core plots were determined in each land use (as replicates) and each plot consist of three as subplot. Insect was collected in 16 traps (size 1 m x 1 m) that was installed under plant canopy prior to fogging process. The collected sample was sorted and identified in the Biocontrol Laboratory, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. Total of 1,040 individuals leaf beetles were collected, belonging to 6 subfamilies and 127 morphospecies. The result of this research showed that a different lanscape has no effect give impact to insect abundance. Different landuse however does significantly impact the abundance and diversity of leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Background: International and market forces are key drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, with transnational and market-based solutions in land-use and forest governance often missing economic, distributive, and environmental targets. Methods: This paper tackles both the framing and effectiveness of transnational initiatives affecting forest lands and peoples in the Global South, and the quality of relationships between institutions in the Global North and the Global South. Through more equitable research partnerships, this paper draws lessons from case studies in Indonesia (legality verification system in different forest property regimes), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (lifting of a moratorium on new logging concession), and Brazil (FSC in the Amazon region and the Amazon Fund). Results: International partnerships have privileged market-based instruments and commodity exchange between Global South and Global North countries, and the benefits of such mechanisms are unevenly distributed. Complementary and alternative policy instruments are discussed for each geography. Conclusions: Glocalizing land-use and forest governance implies in advancing equitable research partnerships between institutions in the Global South and Global North, and strengthening a community of practice for critical enquiry and engagement in partnerships for sustainable development. Land-use, climate and forest governance mechanisms must redress power dynamics, and partnership models, and commit to improving well-being and sustainable livelihood outcomes.

Feed preferences and foraging of stingless bee on different land use at Lombok. Availability of sufficient feed ensures the success of the stingless bee’s keeping. One of the foods utilized is pollen. Pollen is powder which produced by male genitalia on flowers and contains protein, vitamins, and minerals needed by bees. The aims of this study is looking for preferences and searching for feed through the identification of pollen at stup and studies the flight range to find food. This research was conducted in 26 villages in four districts on the Lombok island during November 2017 until February 2018. Determination of the sample was carried out using the snowball information method to get 26 farmers and 1.57% stup taken as samples on three different types of land use, there are agroecosystems, forests, and settlements. Pollen samples are taken directly and analyzed by acetolysis and identified in the laboratory. Potential feed were observed directly through plant’s identification that are located within a radius of 500 meters from the hive. The results showed that the stingless bee’s feed from the Bromeliaceae and Cyperaceae in all types of land use. The Liliaceae is a potential feed in the agroecosystem, while Asteraceae is a potential feed in residential and forest land. Stingless bee that are cultivated in agroecosystem tend to look for food around a radius of 500 m, in forest foraging for food outside the radius and in settlement have a 50% tendency to look for food within a radius. This information is expected to be beneficial for the stingless bee’s beekeeping, especially in Lombok Island.

Understanding host-parasitoid food webs, as well as the factors affecting species interactions, is important for developing pest management strategies in an agroecosystem. This research aimed to study how the long-term change in oil palm plantations, specifically the tree age, affect the structure of host-parasitoid food webs. The field research was conducted on an oil palm plantation located in Central Kalimantan and Jambi Province, Indonesia. In Central Kalimantan, we conducted observations of lepidopteran larvae and parasitoid wasps at different tree ages, ranging from 3 to 18 years old. For tree ages from 3 to 10 years, observations of host-parasitoid food webs were conducted by collecting the lepidopteran larvae using a hand-collection method in each oil palm tree within a hundred trees and they were later reared in the laboratory for observing the emerging parasitoids. The fogging method was applied for trees aged 12 to 18 years because the tree height was too high, and hand-collection was difficult to perform. To compare host-parasitoid food webs between different regions, we also conducted a hand-collection method in Jambi, but only for trees aged 3 years old. The food-web structure that was analyzed included the species number of lepidopteran larvae and parasitoid wasps, linkage density, and interaction diversity. We found 32 species of lepidopteran pests and 16 species of associated parasitoids in Central Kalimantan and 12 species of lepidopteran pests, and 11 species of parasitoids in Jambi. Based on the GLM analysis, tree age had a negative relationship with the species number of lepidopteran larvae and parasitoids as well as linkage density and interaction diversity. Different geographical regions showed different host-parasitoid food web structures, especially the species number of lepidopteran larvae and interaction diversity, which were higher in Central Kalimantan than in Jambi. However, some parasitoids can be found across different tree ages. For example, Fornicia sp (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was recorded in all ages of oil palm sampled. Results of the GLM analysis showed that the abundance of Fornicia sp and its host (lepidopteran larvae abundance) were not affected by the tree age of the oil palm. In conclusion, the long-term change in oil palm plantations simplifies the structure of host-parasitoid food webs. This highlights the importance of long-term studies across geographical regions for a better understanding of the consequences that wide monoculture oil palm plantations have on biological control services.

A nuclear leakage or tactical nuclear weapon use in a limited war could cause immense and long-lasting ecological consequences beyond the direct site of exposure. We call upon all scientists to communicate the importance of the environmental impacts of such an event to all life forms on Earth, including humankind. Changes to ecosystem structure and functioning and species extinctions would alter the biosphere for an unknown time frame. Radiation could trigger cascade effects in marine, atmospheric and terrestrial ecosystems of a magnitude far beyond human capabilities for mitigation or adaptation. Even a “tactical nuclear war” could alter planet Earth’s living boundaries, ending the current Anthropocene era.

Land-use change from forest to plantation can cause the loss of various types of insect diversity group, one of which is the beetle group. Curculionids or weevils is one of the largest families in the Order Coleoptera due to its adaptability in almost all habitats in nature. This research is aimed to study the effect of seasonality on species richness and the abundance of weevils in oil palm and rubber plantation in Hutan Harapan and Bukit Duabelas National Park, Jambi. Sample was collected in the dry season and rainy season 2013–2014 by fogging method using pyrethroid knockdown insecticides. In each land use, 4 observation plots were erected with selected 3 points as a subplots, so there are 16 plots or 48 subplots in total. The results showed that 1.761 individuals of weevils from 9 subfamilies and 45 morphospecies. Based on analysis, seasonal difference did not affect species richness and abundance of weevils, while land-use types affect abundance of weevils. Analysis of similarity using Bray-Curtis Index showed 4% of similarity in two land-use types, and 46% of similarity between two seasons. The diversity index in oil palm plantation were lower than rubber plantation. The most dominant species that can be found in both land-use types is Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust., while Rhynchophorus sp.01 is only found in oil palm plantation, and Curculio sp.04 is only found in rubber plantation.

Spodoptera frugiperda is Indonesia’s relatively new invasive polyphagous insect pest. So far, S. frugiperda infestation has only been reported in corn and rice in Indonesia. However, S. frugiperda is known to feed on many commercial crops in other countries. To date, information on the biological parameters of S. frugiperda is limited in Indonesian ecologies. Since host plants are a critical factor for insect life history and have the potential to be used for pest control strategies, it is essential to study the biology and survival of S. frugiperda on different host plants. This research aimed to investigate the survival, development time, and fecundity of S. frugiperda on other host plant species to predict possible infestation rates for use in pest management. The study was conducted by rearing S. frugiperda on 14 common cultivated host plant species in Indonesia. The survival rate, development time, fecundity, and potential attack rate of S. frugiperda on various tested host plants were analyzed in this study. The findings revealed that corn was the primary host for S. frugiperda. The ability of S. frugiperda to survive on papaya, water spinach, banana, spinach, cucumber, and coco grass indicates that these plants are potential alternate hosts for S. frugiperda. Long beans, bok choy, choy sum, and beans might be indicated as a shelter for S. frugiperda. Meanwhile, inappropriate hosts for S. frugiperda include cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower due to their low survival rate on these plants. This research indicates that these plants have the potential to be used as a hedge, trap, or bunker plant in S. frugiperda management strategies. However, to prevent detrimental damage, control methods are needed in an integrated manner, including monitoring pest populations, habitat manipulation, and conservation of natural enemies.

The gall fly, Cecidochares connexa (Macquart) was first introduced to Indonesia to control the invasive weed Chromolaena odorata (L.) King & Robinson or kirinyuh. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of habitat type and location, and the presence of natural enemies associated with gall flies on their level of attack. This research was be conducted in various types of habitat in Bogor and South Lampung from January to December 2019. Thirty plant samples were obtained using the area species curve method. Sampling was conducted to collect gall in each habitat, it was followed by rearing gall for ± 1 month to see insects that came out from the gall at the Biological Control Laboratory, Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. The results of this study indicate that the location of the observation affects the level of attack on gall flies against kirinyuh and parachitization of gall flies by parasitoid, while the habitat does not affect both. Then there are other insects associated with kirinyuh in addition gall flies in gall, namely Lonchaea sp.

Rainforest canopies, home to one of the most complex and diverse terrestrial arthropod communities, are threatened by conversion of rainforest into agricultural production systems. However, little is known about how predatory arthropod communities respond to such conversion. To address this, we compared canopy spider (Araneae) communities from lowland rainforest with those from three agricultural systems in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, i.e., jungle rubber (rubber agroforest) and monoculture plantations of rubber and oil palm. Using canopy fogging, we collected 10,676 spider specimens belonging to 36 families and 445 morphospecies. The four most abundant families (Salticidae N = 2,043, Oonopidae N = 1,878, Theridiidae N = 1,533 and Clubionidae N = 1,188) together comprised 62.2% of total individuals, while the four most speciose families, Salticidae (S = 87), Theridiidae (S = 83), Araneidae (S = 48) and Thomisidae (S = 39), contained 57.8% of all morphospecies identified. In lowland rainforest, average abundance, biomass and species richness of canopy spiders was at least twice as high as in rubber or oil palm plantations, with jungle rubber showing similar abundances as rainforest, and intermediate biomass and richness. Community composition of spiders was similar in rainforest and jungle rubber, but differed from rubber and oil palm, which also differed from each other. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed that canopy openness, aboveground tree biomass and tree density together explained 18.2% of the variation in spider communities at family level. On a morphospecies level, vascular plant species richness and tree density significantly affected the community composition but explained only 6.8% of the variance. While abundance, biomass and diversity of spiders declined strongly with the conversion of rainforest into monoculture plantations of rubber and oil palm, we also found that a large proportion of the rainforest spider community can thrive in extensive agroforestry systems such as jungle rubber. Despite being very different from rainforest, the canopy spider communities in rubber and oil palm plantations may still play a vital role in the biological control of canopy herbivore species, thus contributing important ecosystem services. The components of tree and palm canopy structure identified as major determinants of canopy spider communities may aid in decision-making processes toward establishing cash-crop plantation management systems which foster herbivore control by spiders.

The structure of agricultural landscape, both of its composition and configuration can affect the presence of predators and parasitoids, and influence the effectiveness of biological control. This study was aimed to examine the relationship between landscape structure and the diversity of Hymenoptera parasitoids in long bean fields in Bogor, West Java. In total, six long bean fields were selected and quantified within a radius 500 m from long bean field. In each long bean field, Hymenoptera parasitoids were sampled in a 50 m x 25 m plot using direct observation. The research result found 283 individuals of Hymenoptera parasitoids belong to 9 families and 31 species. Based on the Mantel test, the landscape structure did not affect the species composition of parasitoids in long bean. However, at class scale, landscape composition especially crop field and semi-natural habitat have an effect on parasitoid abundance. Agricultural landscape with higher patch number of crop fields tends to have higher parasitoid abundance. It indicates that landscape composition at class scale is more affected to Hymenoptera parasitoids than at landscape scale.

Spodoptera frugiperda is an invasive pest from the American continent that attacks corn (Zea mays) and rapidly invaded Africa and Asia. Two main factors that support migration and population distribution of this species are suitable habitats and human activities. To date, two genetic strains of S. frugiperda have been found in corn in Indonesia: the corn strain (CS) and the rice strain (RS). The most accurate gene markers to detect these strains are COI and Tpi, which are located in mitochondria and Z chromosome. This study aims to determine the existing strains of S. frugiperda and their distribution in various landscapes in Bogor Regency. The research was conducted from July 2020 to December 2021 in Bogor, West Java. Sampling of S. fungiperda was carried out from corn plants in Leuwisadeng, Pamijahan1, Pamijahan2, Kemang, Tenjolaya, Dramaga, Cigombong, Cijeruk, Tamansari, and Ciomas. Larval samples were collected and preserved using 96% ethanol, followed by DNA extraction, DNA amplification, electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing. Distribution data were analyzedusing QGIS and Google Earth Pro programs, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22. Sequence data were edited using GeneStudio, aligned using ClustalW in BioEdit, and the phylogeny tree was reconstructed using the neighbor-joining method (bootstrap 1000x) using MEGA X. The obtained sequences were compared with sequences from the GenBank® database. The results showed the presence of two distinct strains of COI (COI-CSh4 and COI-RS) and one strain of Tpi (Tpi-C) in Bogor. The study found no relationship between thelandscape structure and genetic variation of S. frugiperda.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is an emerging new pest species in several Asian countries including Indonesia. This pest can be a threat to Indonesian agriculture because this pest has been reported to cause many losses in other countries. As a preemptive and ecofriendly control strategy, a research to study the performance of Telenomus remus as potential biocontrol agent of this pest was done in laboratory scale. Research was done by exposing an adult female to 50 eggs of S. frugiperda in a cluster. We also exposed the female parasitoid to another 50 eggs of S. litura in a cluster for comparison since this parasitoid had been reported as S. litura egg parasitoid in Indonesia previously. Results showed that there are no difference in the numbers of parasitized eggs, parasitism rate, survival rates and percent females of T. remus reared from both S. frugiperda and S litura, which implies the effectiveness of T. remus as a candidate for bio control agent for S. frugiperda.

Identifying economic and ecological trade-offs of land-use transitions is important to ensure sustainability. Here, Grass et al. find biodiversity-profit trade-offs in tropical land-use transitions in Sumatra, and show that targeted landscape planning is needed to increase land-use efficiency while ensuring socio-ecological sustainability.

Peatlands are especially important but fragile tropical landscapes. The importance of peatlands is owing to their ability to 1) sequester a considerable amount of terrestrial carbon, 2) store freshwater, and 3) regulate floods during the rainy season. Nowadays, extensive peatland degradation occurs because of peatland utilization for agriculture purposes, causing severe environmental consequences such as carbon emission, loss of biodiversity, risk of flooding, and peat fire. Meanwhile, local planners and decision makers tend to overlook the long-term strategic function of peatlands for carbon storage and hydrological regulation, preferring peatland utilization for short-term economic benefits. The objective of our study is to quantify the total ecosystem services (except biodiversity) of a tropical peatland landscape in various peat-utilization scenarios to help build awareness among local planners and decision makers on the strategic tradeoff between peatland utilization and restoration. Studies on the total ecosystem services in a tropical peatland landscape involving hydrological regulation are still rare. Based on the net present value calculation, provisioning services, carbon regulation, and hydrological regulation in our study area account for 19, 70, and 11% of the total ecosystem services, respectively. Based on uncertainty analysis, at any combination of the social cost of carbon emission (within a range of USD 52.7–USD 107.4) and discount rate (within a range of 5–10%), the enrichment of peatlands with paludiculture crops (e.g., jelutong) shows superior ecosystem services compared to other peatland-utilization scenarios. Conversely, planting peatlands with monoculture crops, which are associated with peatland drainage, shows a rapid decrease in the total ecosystem services. The fluvial carbon export in our study, which is often neglected in a peatland carbon budget, increases the estimate of the total carbon budget by 8%. Restoring undrained peatlands with paludiculture crops such as jelutong contributes positively to carbon sequestration and potentially reduces carbon emissions by 11%. These quantitative findings can help local planners and decision makers in understanding the tradeoff between the long-term benefits of peatland restoration and the short-term economic benefits of peatland utilization for monoculture crops.

Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti is the latest technology that was developed to eliminate dengue fever. The Ministry of Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenristekdikti) established an expert group to identify future potential risks that may occur over a period of 30 years associated with the release of Wolbachia-infected Ae. aegypti. The risk assessment consisted of identifying different hazards that may have impacts on humans and the environment. From the consensus among the experts, there were 56 hazards identified and categorized into 4 components, namely, ecological matters, efficacy in mosquito management, economic and sociocultural issues, and public health standards. There were 19 hazards in the ecological group. The overall likelihood in the ecology of the mosquito is very low (0.05), with moderate consequence (0.74), which resulted in negligible risk. For the efficacy in mosquito management group, there were 12 hazards that resulted in very low likelihood (0.11) with high consequence (0.85). The overall risk for mosquito management efficacy was very low (0.09). There were 14 hazards identified in the public health standard with very low likelihood (0.07), moderate consequence (0.50) and negligible risk (0.04). Lastly, 13 hazards were identified in the economic and sociocultural group with low likelihood (0.01) but of moderate consequence (0.5), which resulted in a very low risk (0.09). The risk severity level of the four components leading to the endpoint risk of “cause more harm” due to releasing Wolbachia-infected Ae. aegypti is negligible (0.01).

Abstract The conversion of natural ecosystems to agricultural land is one of the most important drivers of biodiversity decline worldwide, particularly in the tropics. Species loss is typically trait‐associated, leading to filtering of disturbance‐resistant species during community assembly, which affects ecosystem functioning and evolutionary potential of communities. To understand the ecological and phylogenetic impact of rainforest conversion to agricultural systems, we combine analysis of nesting habit, feeding habit, colony size, and body size of canopy ants (Formicidae) with a phylogenetic analysis of species collected in four land‐use systems in Sumatra, Indonesia: (1) lowland tropical rainforest, (2) jungle rubber (extensive rubber agroforest), and smallholder plantations of (3) rubber and (4) oil palm. Canopy ant communities in these land‐use systems differed in trait composition, with a larger proportion of generalist nesting and generalist‐omnivore feeding species in oil palm compared to rainforest and a larger proportion of generalist nesters and species with large colonies (>1000 individuals) in rubber than in rainforest. Traits of canopy ant communities in jungle rubber were more similar to those in rainforest than to those in rubber and oil palm plantations. In rainforest, mean pairwise phylogenetic distance was lower than expected for random community assembly, but did not differ from random in the other land‐use systems. Of the traits nesting habit, feeding habit, and colony size, only feeding habit exhibited phylogenetic signal. Our results show that rainforest conversion to agricultural systems is accompanied by shifts in trait composition of canopy ant communities. Further, our results argue against environmental filtering of closely related canopy ant species as the major community assembly mechanism in plantation systems, but suggest that the Sumatran lowland rainforests harbor recently diverged endemic ant species that are particularly vulnerable to rainforest conversion to agricultural systems. Given the importance of ants for tropical ecosystems, the ecological differences among ant communities along the land‐use gradient might have important consequences for ecosystem functioning and services in plantation systems.

Land-use change and habitat fragmentation are well-known to affect host-parasitoid interactions. However, the study of the effects of landscape composition, as a result of habitat fragmentation, on host-parasitoid food webs is still limited especially in a tropical agricultural landscape. This research was aimed to study the effect of agricultural landscape composition on the structure of host-parasitoid food webs. Field research was conducted in sixteen long-bean fields located in Bogor Regency, West Java, Indonesia. In each long-bean field, sampling of insect pests and their parasitoids was carried out using direct observation within a plot size of 25 m × 50 m. The collected insects were brought to the laboratory for rearing and observed for emerging parasitoids. Landscape composition of each long-bean field was measured by digitizing the whole patch within a radius of 500 m from the long-bean field as a center of landscape, and landscape parameters were then quantified by focusing on number of patches and class area of both semi-natural habitats and crop fields. In total, we found 51 morphospecies of insect pests and 110 morphospecies of associated parasitoids from all research locations. Lepidopteran pests are the most abundant and species-rich with 35 morphospecies and with 76 morphospecies of parasitoids. Based on the generalized linear models, landscape composition especially class area of natural habitat and crop field showed a positive relationship with host-parasitoid food-web structure especially on connectance and compartment diversity. In conclusion, landscape composition contributes to shaping the host-parasitoid food-webs in a tropical agricultural landscape.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) is a fast-growing tree native in Australia, Papua, and Eastern part of Indonesia. It is valued for its timber, oil, gum, and resin, and as an ornamental tree. Many eucalyptus clones have been developed and planted for timber production in Sumatera. Several galls caused by insects are known as serious pests of eucalyptus and can reduce the quality and quantity of the timber production. This study was aimed to identify the gall inducers and describe the galls that formed on the eucalyptus clones which planted in Mt. Mutis, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The research was conducted from October 2017 to July 2018. A total of 855 seedlings consisting of 57 clones and 15 plants for each clone were planted in Mt. Mutis. Observations of the gall symptoms were done biweekly on each plant. Gall symptoms were directly observed and identified, included the form, size, location, color, and insect that caused the gall. There were four types of gall forms were recorded. One type of gall caused by Ophelimus sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) which similar to the gall recorded in Sumatera and Java. The other three gall forms were never been reported in Indonesia. The insects that associated with galls were Hymenoptera and Diptera orders. The type of gall that mostly found in the eucalyptus clones was the big clustered leaf gall caused by Fergusonina sp. (Diptera: Fergusoninidae). There are only two clones which are included as susceptible clones based on the type of gall formed, C35 and C53. There were 27 eucalyptus clones with no gall infestations which were considered as the good candidate of resistance eucalyptus clones to the gall infestations.

Apanteles taragamae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a larval parasitoid of Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a minor pest of Cucurbitaceae crop. The aim of this study was to determine the behavior and biology of A. taragamae. The study was conducted under laboratory conditions by exposing 930 larvae of D. indica to be parasitized by 11 adult female parasitoid of A. taragamae (1 day old), which have been mated 24 hours prior to expose. Each female was exposed to 15 larvae/day until they died. The parameters used to measure the biology of A. taragamae were fecundity, longevity, and parasitism. Results showed that the longevity of adult females was 5.64 days, the parasitism was 96%, the number of egg laid was 76.40/day, the total number of eggs laid was 611.18, and potential fecundity was 752.73 egg.

Parasitoids play an important role in controlling pests, including pests of oil palm. To maximize biological control technique using parasitoids, interactions between pests and parasitoids need to be studied. This research aimed to study parasitoid diversity and host-parasitoid interaction in oil palm plantation with the different management system. The field research was conducted in oil palm plantation own by smallholder and company (PT Humusindo) in Jambi. Sampling insects was conducted by collecting pests (parasitoid host) on oil palm trees with age of four years old. Eggs, larvae, and pupae of the pests were taken directly by hand then reared in the laboratory to know their parasitoids. Pests and parasitoids emerged were identified up to morphospecies or species level. A total of 176 lepidopteran pests consisting of 15 morphospecies and 6 families, and 650 parasitoids consisting of 21 morphospecies and 12 families have been collected. Nine morphospecies of pests from 25 individuals were found in smallholder plantation and 14 morphospecies of pests from 151 individuals in company plantation. Eight morphospecies of 26 parasitoids were found in smallholder plantations and 8 morphospecies of 624 parasitoids in the company plantation. The interaction structure between pests and parasitoids is more complex in the company plantation than in smallholder plantations. Family Braconidae and Ichneumonidae are the most parasitoids found and associated with nettle caterpillars. The different of the management system of oil palm plantation did not affect the diversity and abundance of pests as well as their parasitoids in oil palm plantations.

Wolbachia that have been found to be maternally inherited in arthropods, including insects behave primarily as a reproductive parasite by inducing feminization and/or death among genetic males; causing cytoplasmic incompatibility, and activating parthenogenesis, in host insects. This research aims to detect the presence of Wolbachia in several parasitic insects and to determine the diversity of Wolbachia at the supergroup level. Insect genetic samples were collected, amplified using wsp (Wolbachia surface protein) gene and with the sequences then analyzed using species homologues drawn from the Genbank database. These activities were dedicated to detect intracellular presence of Wolbachia and assembled the phylogenetic tree of the respected bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that Wolbachia existed in the samples belonged to the supergroup A (found in Cherapron sp.) and supergroup B (found in E. japonica). Wolbachia were detected in seven out of nine wasps i.e. Anagyrus lopezi, Ceraphron sp., Microplitis manilae, Brachymeria lasus, Scelionidae sp01, Trichogramma sp, and Exorista japonica. Single infection by Wolbachia supergroup A was detected in A. lopezi, Ceraphron sp., M. manilae, and Scelionidae sp01. Meanwhile single infection by Wolbachia supergroup B was detected only in E. japonica. Double infection by both supergroups occurred in B. lasus and Trichogramma sp. samples.

Rainforest conversion into monoculture plantations results in species loss and community shifts across animal taxa. The effect of such conversion on the role of ecophysiological properties influencing communities, and conversion effects on phylogenetic diversity and community assembly mechanisms, however, are rarely studied in the same context. Here, we compare salticid spider (Araneae: Salticidae) communities between canopies of lowland rainforest, rubber agroforest (“jungle rubber”) and monoculture plantations of rubber or oil palm, sampled in a replicated plot design in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Overall, we collected 912 salticid spider individuals and sorted them to 70 morphospecies from 21 genera. Salticid richness was highest in jungle rubber, followed by rainforest, oil palm and rubber, but abundance of salticids did not differ between land-use systems. Community composition was similar in jungle rubber and rainforest but different from oil palm and rubber, which in turn were different from each other. The four investigated land-use systems differed in aboveground plant biomass, canopy openness and land use intensity, which explained 12% of the observed variation in canopy salticid communities. Phylogenetic diversity based on ~850 bp 28S rDNA fragments showed similar patterns as richness, that is, highest in jungle rubber, intermediate in rainforest, and lowest in the two monoculture plantations. Additionally, we found evidence for phylogenetic clustering of salticids in oil palm, suggesting that habitat filtering is an important factor shaping salticid spider communities in monoculture plantations. Overall, our study offers a comprehensive insight into the mechanisms shaping communities of arthropod top predators in canopies of tropical forest ecosystems and plantations, combining community ecology, environmental variables and phylogenetics across a land-use gradient in tropical Asia.

The African oil palm weevil, Elaeidobius kamerunicus is an effective pollinator of oil palm. Each individual palm produces exclusively male or female inflorescence so that the success of pollination depends on the ability of the pollinator to transfer pollen from male to female flowers. The objective of this research was to study the amount of pollen carried by E. kamerunicus between male and female inflorescences (pollen load) and the amount of pollen carried on each part of the weevil’s body (pollen distribution). Fifty each of male and female E. kamerunicus individuals were collected from male and female flowers on trees in 3 locations: Siantar (North Sumatra), Dramaga (West Java), and Morowali (Central Sulawesi). Data on pollen load and pollen distribution on the weevil’s body were analyzed using ImageJ software. Results show that E. kamerunicus individuals collected more pollen from male flowers than from female flowers. In addition, male insects carried more pollen on their bodies than female insects. Pollen distribution on weevil body parts was highest on the elytra, followed by the thorax, abdomen, legs, and head respectively.

Jambi province is one of the regions in Indonesia that has tropical rainforests with different landscape characteristics in each region. Tropical rainforests contain the highest biodiversity in the world and as a habitat for various types of flora and fauna, including elaterid beetles. Elaterid beetles have an important role as ecological bioindicators. The aim of this research was to study the diversity and species composition of elaterid beetle in two different landscape types. Insect sampling was carried out in Jambi Province on two tropical rainforest landscape, i.e. Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD) and Harapan Rainforest. Elaterid beetles were collected by canopy fogging method in the morning. Each landscape consists of four core plots and each core plot consist of three as subplot, total subplots observed in both landscape were 24 subplots. A total of 2069 individuals of elaterid beetles were collected, belonging to 6 subfamilies, 23 genera, and 59 morphospecies. The abundance of elaterid beetles was higher in Harapan Rainforest, while species richness was higher in TNBD landscape. Species dominant in two landscape consist to subfamily Agrypninae, belonging to genera Adelocera with morphospecies Adelocera sp.01. The result of this research showed that landscape differences influencing the composition and abundance of elaterid beetles, but it does not influence in species richness of elaterid beetles.

Hymenoptera is one of the four largest insect orders in the world, one of which is its role as a natural enemy (parasitoids, predators). Land conversion can affect the diversity and composition of the parasitoid Hymenoptera and its ecological role. This study aims to examine the effect of land use types on the diversity and composition of hymenopterans parasitoid in Jambi. The study was conducted on various types of land use in the Harapan Forest landscape and Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD), Jambi Province including forests, rubber forests, oil palm plantations, and rubber plantations. Insect sampling was conducted from March to September 2013, using fogging techniques. A total of 14,258 hymenopteran parasitoid individuals consisting of 30 families were obtained from all study sites. Encyrtidae, Braconidae, Aphelinidae, Eulophidae, Scelionidae, Ceraphronidae, and Platigasteridae families are found in high abundance. Oil palm land use types are found to have different parasitoid compositions compared to other land use types, while forest and rubber forest land use types have high species composition. The results of this study indicate that the type of land use affects the diversity and composition of hymenopteran parasitoid species.

There is a high diversity of bees in the tropics, including honey bees and stingless bees, which are the main sources for honey and other ecosystem services. In Indonesia, beekeeping practices have been developed for centuries, and they have been part of many cultural practices in many traditional communities. The objective of this research was to study the beekeeping status and managed bee diversity in Indonesia and to investigate beekeepers’ perspectives on the factors and obstacles related to beekeeping. Direct interview and online interview were conducted to gain data on bees and beekeepers. In total, 272 beekeepers were interviewed across 25 provinces. Samplings of honey bees and stingless bees were also done during direct interviews for further identification and, when possible, pollen identification. All data and specimens were then sent to IPB Bogor for compilation and identification. We recorded 22 species of bees, including 3 species of honey bees and 19 species of stingless bees, that are reared by Indonesian beekeepers, with Apis cerana and Tetragonula laeviceps as the most common species. Our research also found that the majority of beekeepers fall into the category of the younger generation (30–39 years old) with educational background mostly from senior high school. Based on the beekeepers’ perspectives, there are several obstacles to beekeeping, especially the occurrence of death of bee foragers attributed to climate, food source, and pesticides. In conclusion, there is a need to develop a strategy for beekeeping and bee conservation in Indonesia, especially for adaptation and mitigation from environmental changes with a particular focus on climate and land-use change.

Apanteles taragamae Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious larval endoparasitoid of cucumber moth Diaphania indica Saunders (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). The success of biological control using parasitoids depends on reproductive behavior of adult female parasitoids, especially those related to the host availability that can affect oviposition behavior. The objectives of this research is to study the effect of host deprivation against reproductive capacity and searching and handling time behavior of A. taragamae. The study was conducted by depriving adult females of A. taragamae of host for 1, 2, 3, 4 days after emergence (virgin females with no oviposition experience) and experienced females. The parameters observed were the number of eggs laid and parasitization on the first day after treatment, actual fecundity, ovary egg load, potential fecundity, longevity, searching and handling time of the first host after treatment,. The results showed that host deprivation affect the number of eggs laid on the first day after treatment, ovary egg load , searching and handling time of host. Adult virgin females of A. taragamae without oviposition experience has more eggs laid on the first day after treatment, but has a slower searching and handling time for the first host after treatment than females with oviposition experience. Intisari Apanteles taragamae Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) merupakan parasitoid larva utama dari Diaphania indica Saunders (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) yang bersifat gregarius. Keberhasilan pengendalian hayati menggunakan parasitoid sangat tergantung pada perilaku reproduksi imago betina parasitoid, terutama yang berhubungan dengan ketersediaan inang yang dapat memengaruhi perilaku peletakkan telur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh ketiadaan inang terhadap perilaku dan kapasitas reproduksi parasitoid A. taragamae. Penelitian dilakukan dengan cara memberikan perlakuan berupa ketiadaan inang selama 1, 2, 3, dan 4 hari setelah kemunculan A. taragamae menjadi imago (ketiadaan inang di depan) dan setelah A. taragamae mendapatkan inang terlebih dahulu (ketiadaan inang di belakang). Parameter yang diamati adalah jumlah telur yang diletakkan pada hari pertama setelah perlakuan, total telur yang diletakkan, sisa telur dalam ovari, potensi produksi telur, lama hidup imago A. taragamae, serta waktu pencarian dan penanganan inang pertama setelah ketiadaan inang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan ketiadaan inang memberikan pengaruh terhadap jumlah telur yang diletakkan pada hari pertama setelah perlakuan, jumlah telur yang tersisa dalam ovari, serta waktu pencarian dan penanganan inang pertama setelah perlakuan. Imago A. taragamae pada perlakuan ketiadaan inang di depan meletakkan telur yang lebih banyak pada hari pertama setelah perlakuan, namun memerlukan waktu lebih lama dalam mencari dan menangani inang pertama dibandingkan imago A. taragamae pada perlakuan ketiadaan inang di belakang.

Presence of insects in agricultural habitat is affected by the surrounding circumstances such as the complexity and structure of landscape. Landscape structure is often formed as a consequence of the fragmentation of semi-natural habitat, which can negatively affect species richness and abundance of insects. This study was aimed to study the effect of complexity and structure of landscape on the diversity, abundance and traits of flower-visiting insects in cucumber fields. This study was conducted in cucumber fields surrounded by other agricultural crops, shrubs, semi-natural habitat and housing area, in Bogor, Cianjur and Sukabumi regencies, West Java, Indonesia. In a total of 16 agricultural areas, complexity and parameter of landscape especially class area (CA), number of patches (NumP), mean patch size (MPS), total edge (TE), and mean shape index (MSI) of seminatural habitats were measured. Sampling of flower-visiting insects was conducted using scan sampling methods. The result showed that landscape complexity affected species richness (but not abundance and trait) of flower-visiting insects both for mobile and less-mobile insects. Flower-visiting insects also responded differently to landscape structure. Species richness, abundance and variation of body size of mobile insects were affected by structure of semi-natural habitat.

Lepidopteran community and its parasitoid on cucumber field in Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur District, West Java. Cucumber is one of horticultural commodities that are widely cultivated in Indonesia, but information related to Lepidoptera pests and their parasitoids are limited. The aim of this study was to obtain information about Lepidopteran community on cucumber and their parasitoid diversity. Lepidopteran larvae were collected from 16 cucumber sites in the District of Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur in November 2014 until May 2015. Larvae were collected from each cucumber plant follow along 60 m transects. Larvae were collected from the field then brought to the laboratory. All larvae were then reared on cucumber leaves until pupation and parasitoids emerged. The data obtained were tested by analysis of the mean and analysis of variance (One way ANOVA) using the program R Stat. The results showed that cucumber plants were attacked by six species (morphospecies) belonging to four families of Lepidoptera. Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is the most abundant species found. All species (morphospecies) of Lepidoptera are more common when the cucumber plants are in the generative growth stage. Our result further showed that D. indica was attacked by 9 parasitoid larvae and 3 parasitoid pupae, C. chalcites (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by 5 parasitoids dan S. litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by 2 parasitoids. A braconid, Apanteles taragamae, is the most common parasitoid of D. indica found in the field. Its parasitism rate can reach 27% in the field. Overall, this research revealed that a number of parasitoids, that were found attacking Lepidopteran on cucumber indicates their potential use as biological control agents in this agroecosystems.

Oil palm plantations are intensively managed agricultural systems that increasingly dominate certain tropical regions. Oil palm monocultures have been criticized because of their reduced biodiversity compared to the forests they historically replaced, and because of their negative impact on soils, water, and climate. We experimentally test whether less intensive management schemes may enhance biodiversity and lessen detrimental effects on the environment while maintaining high yields. We compare reduced vs. conventional fertilization, as well as mechanical vs. chemical weed control (with herbicides) in a long-term, full-factorial, multidisciplinary experiment. We conducted the experiment in an oil palm company estate in Sumatra, Indonesia, and report the results of the first 2 years. We measured soil nutrients and functions, surveyed above- and below-ground organisms, tracked oil palm condition and productivity, and calculated plantation gross margins. Plants, aboveground arthropods, and belowground animals were positively affected by mechanical vs. chemical weed control, but we could not detect effects on birds and bats. There were no detectable negative effects of reduced fertilization or mechanical weeding on oil palm yields, fine roots, or leaf area index. Also, we could not detect detrimental effects of the reduced fertilization and mechanical weeding on soil nutrients and functions (mineral nitrogen, bulk density, and litter decomposition), but water infiltration and base saturation tended to be higher under mechanical weeding, while soil moisture, and microbial biomass varied with treatment. Economic performance, measured as gross margins, was higher under reduced fertilization. There might be a delayed response of oil palm to the different management schemes applied, so results of future years may confirm whether this is a sustainable management strategy. Nevertheless, the initial effects of the experiment are encouraging to consider less intensive management practices as economically and ecologically viable options for oil palm plantations.

Ants provide important ecosystem services such as predation and decomposition. The ecosystem services in different land-use systems will be influenced by the dominant ants species in those areas. The objectives of this study were to investigate the impact of land use types on ant community structure and to measure the ecosystem service provided by ants. The study was done in several land-use types in Jambi i.e. secondary forest, jungle rubber, rubber plantation, and oil palm plantation during April–Juni 2014. In each land-duse type, four plots were selected with a size of 50 m x 50 m for each plot. Each plot consisted of five subplots of 5 m x 5 m. In each plot, a tree was chosen for further observation on ant diversity and its ecosystem services. Ants were collected with the baiting method using Corcyra cephalonica larva that was laid on a plastic plate and put on the ground and on the tree stem. Ecosystem services were measured by observing the number of C. cephalonica larvae that were carried or removed by ants within a 1-hour observation. The results showed that the forest has the highest ant species richness than other land-use types. Land-use types have no impact on ant species richness but affected ants species composition. The highest removal C. cephalonica by ants was found in the secondary forest. Ants that played important role in ecosystem service in this study as predator were Achantomyrmex sp. 01, Aenictus sp.01, Carebara sp. 01, Tetramrium sp. 02, O. denticulata, Tetramorium sp. 03, Crematogaster sp. 02, A. gracilipes and Rhoptromyrmex sp.01.

Whitefly (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) plays an important role as pest in many horticultural plants (fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants). The aim of this research was to study whiteflies diversity in horticultural plants on different altitude. Whitefly samples were collected from its host plants in five areas of West Java Bogor, Sukabumi, Cianjur, Bandung, and Garut. The places were grouped into three altitude categories: lowland, midland, and highland. Number of whitefly species and individual were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post-hoc Tukey (α = 0.05), while the correlation between altitude and whiteflies species number described in linear regression. Species diversity was measured by two types of index (Shannon and Simpson). The highest number of whitefly individual was found in vegetables (121.80). However, the highest number of whitefly species was found in fruits (2.44 species). According to the altitude, the highest number of whitefly species was found in the lowland (4.67 species), whereas the lowest was found in the highland (1.58 species). The abundance of whiteflies population increases with increasing of altitude, whereas the number of species decreases with increasing of altitude. The highest number of whitefly species diversity was found in the lowland (H’ = 2.08), meanwhile the lowest was in the highland (H’ = 0.38). By contrast, according to the Simpson index, there was species domination of whitefly in the Highland (D = 0.54) by species Aleurodicus dugesii Cockerell

The complexity of agricultural landscape can affect biodiversity in agroecosystem. Complex landscape tend to have higher diversity and composition of spesies than simple landscape. The aim of this research was to study the diversity and species composition of parasitic Hymenoptera under different complexity of agricultural landscape. Field research was conducted at four cucumber fields in Bogor District with two fields were located in complex agricultural landscape as well as simple agricultural landscape. In each cucumber field, plot with size 25 m x 50 m was provided for sampling of parasitic Hymenoptera which was conducted using yellow pan trap, malaise trap and host collection within transect. In total, 233 species of parasitic Hymenoptera were found from four cucumber fields during two planting seasons. The result showed that the diversity and species composition of the Hymenoptera parasitic did not differ between simple and complex agricultural landscapes. It indicates that the diversity and species composition of parasitic Hymenoptera on cucumber plantation in Bogor was not affected by landscape complexity.

In tropical regions, habitat change and fragmentation partly occur due to urbanization. This change of land-use can affect many ecosystem services and their providers, such as pollination and pollinators. Within agricultural systems, monoculture systems and pesticide application are the most detrimental to pollinators and insect communities. In this study, we investigated the effect of distance from natural habitat on the diversity of insect pollinators and cucumber productivity. As the independent variable, distance from natural habitats was classified into two different groups i.e. agricultural area near to (less than 200m) and far from (more than 1km) the natural habitat. We found that the abundance of insect pollinators was significantly lower in agricultural areas near to natural habitats compared to those located far from natural habitats. Cucumber farms located near to natural habitats had 54% similar species composition of insect pollinators with cucumber farms located far from natural habitats. The productivity of cucumbers did not differ between cucumber farms near to and far from natural habitats. An expected result was the positive correlation between pollinator abundance (i.e. Xylocopa spp.) and the productivity of cucumber. Our findings suggest that the diversity of pollinators in tropical agricultural landscape is influenced more by a landscape composition of high natural habitat fragments than spatial distance between cropland and natural habitats.

Small-scale farmers in Southeast Asia are increasingly turning to monocultures of oil palm and rubber to maximize income. Clough and colleagues demonstrate that this land-use change in Indonesia comes at a cost to a wide array of ecosystem functions and biodiversity.

Effect of temperature and host density on superparasitisme by Eriborus argenteopilosus: Implication for biological control. Superparatism is a type of parasite in which the host is attacked by another parasitoid. Superparatism is influenced by several factors including temperature and host density. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of temperature and host density on superparatism E. argenteopilosus. Different number of larva C. pavonana (15, 30, 60, 90 and 120) was infested with a female parasitoidat various temperature (200, 250, and 300C) for three hours. The larva host was disectionto enable us to count the number of eggs. The study result reveals that superparatism E. argenteopilosus was influenced by temperature and host density. Superparatism occured randomly at different temperature reaching the highest at 200 with host density of 15 and 30.
