Search

Near the center of our Milky Way is a bar-like structure and the so-called Expanding 3-kpc arms. We currently have limited knowledge of this important region, since we are about 8.2 kpc from the center and cannot directly observe it at optical wavelengths, owing to strong extinction from interstellar dust. Here we present extremely precise VLBI measurements of water maser sources from the BeSSeL Survey, where extinction is not a problem, which accurately determine the 3-dimensional locations and motions of three massive young stars. Combined with previous measurements, these stars delineate a trail of orbits outlining the Milky Way's Galactic Bar. We present the first measurements capturing the dynamics of quasi-elliptical (X1) orbits around the Galactic Bar. Our findings provide evidence substantiating the existence of such orbits populated by massive young stars. Our measurements of the position and velocity of a number of massive young stars, previously identified with the Expanding 3-kpc arms, show that they are more likely located in the X1 orbits about the Galactic Bar. Also, some stars previously assigned to the Norma spiral arm appear to be in these orbits, which suggests that this spiral arm does not extend past the end of the bar.

We present a survey of the Perseus molecular cloud in the J $=$ 1$\rightarrow$0 transition of HCN, a widely used tracer of dense molecular gas. The survey was conducted with the CfA 1.2 m telescope, which at 89 GHz has a beam width of 11' and a spectral resolution of 0.85 km s$^{-1}$. A total of 8.1 deg$^2$ was surveyed on a uniform 10' grid to a sensitivity of 14 mK per channel. The survey was compared with similar surveys of CO and dust in order to study and calibrate the HCN line as a dense gas tracer. We find the HCN emission to extend over a considerable fraction of the cloud. We show that the HCN intensity remains linear with H$_2$ column density well into the regime where the CO line saturates. We use radiative transfer modeling to show that this likely results from subthermal excitation of HCN in a cloud where the column and volume densities of H$_2$ are positively correlated. To match our HCN observations the model requires an exponential decrease in HCN abundance with increasing extinction, consistent with HCN depletion onto grains. The modeling also reveals that the mean volume density of H$_2$ in the HCN emitting regions is $\sim$ 10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$, well below the HCN critical density. We compare observations of HI from the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Arecibo Observatory and observations of HCO$^+$ from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in the diffuse ($A_V\lesssim1$) interstellar medium (ISM) to predictions from a photodissociation region (PDR) chemical model and multi-phase ISM simulations. Using a coarse grid of PDR models, we estimate the density, FUV radiation field, and cosmic ray ionization rate (CRIR) for each structure identified in HCO$^+$ and HI absorption. These structures fall into two categories. Structures with $T_s<40~\mathrm{K}$, mostly with $N(\mathrm{HCO^+})\lesssim10^{12}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, are consistent with modest density, FUV radiation field, and CRIR models, typical of the diffuse molecular ISM. Structures with spin temperature $T_s>40~\mathrm{K}$, mostly with $N(\mathrm{HCO^+})\gtrsim10^{12}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, are consistent with high density, FUV radiation field, and CRIR models, characteristic of environments close to massive star formation. The latter are also found in directions with a significant fraction of thermally unstable HI. In at least one case, we rule out the PDR model parameters, suggesting that alternative mechanisms (e.g., non-equilibrium processes like turbulent dissipation and/or shocks) are required to explain the observed HCO$^+$ in this direction. Similarly, while our observations and simulations of the turbulent, multi-phase ISM agree that HCO$^+$ formation occurs along sightlines with $N(\mathrm{HI})\gtrsim10^{21}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, the simulated data fail to explain HCO$^+$ column densities $\gtrsim\rm{few}\times10^{12}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$. Since a majority of our sightlines with HCO$^+$ had such high column densities, this likely indicates that non-equilibrium chemistry is important for these lines of sight., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We have complemented existing observations of HI absorption with new observations of HCO$^+$, C$_2$H, HCN, and HNC absorption from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) in the direction of 20 background radio continuum sources with $4^\circ \leq |b| \leq 81^\circ$ to constrain the atomic gas conditions that are suitable for the formation of diffuse molecular gas. We find that these molecular species form along sightlines where $A_V \gtrsim 0.25$, consistent with the threshold for the HI-to-H$_2$ transition at solar metallicity. Moreover, we find that molecular gas is associated only with structures that have an HI optical depth $> 0.1$, a spin temperature $< 80$ K, and a turbulent Mach number $\gtrsim 2$. We also identify a broad, faint component to the HCO$^+$ absorption in a majority of sightlines. Compared to the velocities where strong, narrow HCO$^+$ absorption is observed, the HI at these velocities has a lower cold neutral medium (CNM) fraction and negligible CO emission. The relative column densities and linewidths of the different molecular species observed here are similar to those observed in previous experiments over a range of Galactic latitudes, suggesting that gas in the solar neighborhood and gas in the Galactic plane are chemically similar. For a select sample of previously-observed sightlines, we show that the absorption line profiles of HCO$^+$, HCN, HNC, and C$_2$H are stable over periods of $\sim 3$ years and $\sim 25$ years, likely indicating that molecular gas structures in these directions are at least $\gtrsim 100$ AU in size, Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables. We have measured trigonometric parallaxes for four water masers associated with distant massive young stars in the inner regions of the Galaxy using the VLBA as part of the BeSSeL Survey. G026.50$+$0.28. is located at the near end of the Galactic bar, perhaps at the origin of the Norma spiral arm. G020.77$-$0.05 is in the Galactic Center region and is likely associated with a far-side extension of the Scutum arm. G019.60$-$0.23 and G020.08$-$0.13 are likely associated and lie well past the Galactic Center. These sources appear to be in the Sagittarius spiral arm, but an association with the Perseus arm cannot be ruled out., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables

We use two existing molecular cloud catalogs derived from the same CO survey and two catalogs derived from local dust extinction surveys to investigate the nature of the GMC mass-size relation in the Galaxy. We find that the four surveys are well described by $M_{GMC} \sim R^2$ implying a constant mean surface density, $\Sigma_{GMC}$, for the cataloged clouds. However, the scaling coefficients and scatter differ significantly between the CO and extinction derived relations. We find that the additional scatter seen in the CO relations is due to a systematic variation in $\Sigma_{GMC}$ with Galactic radius that is unobservable in the local extinction data. We decompose this radial variation of $\Sigma_{GMC}$ into two components, a linear negative gradient with Galactic radius and a broad peak coincident with the molecular ring and superposed on the linear gradient. We show that the former may be due to a radial dependence of X$_{CO}$ on metallicity while the latter likely results from a combination of increased surface densities of individual GMCs and a systematic upward bias in the measurements of $\Sigma_{GMC}$ due to cloud blending in the molecular ring. We attribute the difference in scaling coefficients between the CO and extinction data to an underestimate of X$_{CO}$. We recalibrate the CO observations of nearby GMCs using extinction measurements to find that locally X$_{CO}$ $=$ 3.6$\pm$0.3 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (K-km/s)$^{-1}$. We conclude that outside the molecular ring the GMC population of the Galaxy can be described to relatively good precision by a constant $\Sigma_{GMC}$ of 35 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ, corrected typos in earlier version

We compile and analyze ~200 trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of molecular masers associated with very young high-mass stars. These measurements strongly suggest that the Milky Way is a four-arm spiral. Fitting log-periodic spirals to the locations of the masers, allows us to significantly expand our view of the structure of the Milky Way. We present an updated model for its spiral structure and incorporate it into our previously published parallax-based distance-estimation program for sources associated with spiral arms. Modeling the three-dimensional space motions yields estimates of the distance to the Galactic center, Ro = 8.15 +/- 0.15 kpc, the circular rotation speed at the Sun's position, To = 236 +/- 7 km/s, and the nature of the rotation curve. Our data strongly constrain the full circular velocity of the Sun, To + Vsun = 247 +/- 4 km/s, and its angular velocity, (To + Vsun)/Ro = 30.32 +/- 0.27 km/s/kpc. Transforming the measured space motions to a Galactocentric frame which rotates with the Galaxy, we find non-circular velocity components typically about 10 km/s. However, near the Galactic bar and in a portion of the Perseus arm, we find significantly larger non-circular motions. Young high-mass stars within 7 kpc of the Galactic center have a scale height of only 19 pc and, thus, are well suited to define the Galactic plane. We find that the orientation of the plane is consistent with the IAU-defined plane to within +/-0.1 deg., and that the Sun is offset toward the north Galactic pole by Zsun = 5.5 +/- 5.8 pc. Accounting for this offset places the central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, in the midplane of the Galaxy. Using our improved Galactic parameters, we predict the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar to be at a distance of 6.54 +/- 0.24 kpc, assuming its orbital decay from gravitational radiation follows general relativity., Comment: 47 pages; 11 figures, 4 tables

As part of the BeSSeL Survey, we report trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of molecular maser sources associated with 13 distant high mass star forming regions in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way. In particular, we obtain improved parallax distance estimates for three well studied regions: 1.9 +0.1/-0.1 kpc for M17, 5.3 +1.3/-0.9 kpc for W51, and 7.9 +0.9/-0.7 kpc for GAL 045.5+00.0. Peculiar motions for all but one source are less than 20 km/s. We fit a log-periodic spiral to the locations and estimate an average pitch angle of 7.2+-1.9 deg. We find that the section of the arm beyond the tangent point in the first quadrant of the Milky Way appears 15 pc below the IAU-defined Galactic plane., Comment: ApJ accepted. 36 pages, 8 figures and 2 tables

Context. The Gaia mission has released the second data set (Gaia DR2), which contains parallaxes and proper motions for a large number of massive, young stars. Aims. We investigate the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood revealed by Gaia DR2 and compare it with that depicted by VLBI maser parallaxes. Methods. We examined three samples with different constraints on parallax uncertainty and distance errors and stellar spectral types: (1) all OB stars with parallax errors of less than 10%; (2) only O-type stars with 0.1 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.2 kpc; and (3) only O-type stars with 0.05 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.3 kpc. Results. In spite of the significant distance uncertainties for stars in DR2 beyond 1.4 kpc, the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood demonstrated by Gaia agrees well with that illustrated by VLBI maser results. The O-type stars available from DR2 extend the spiral arm models determined from VLBI maser parallaxes into the fourth Galactic quadrant, and suggest the existence of a new spur between the Local and Sagittarius arms., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A

The Outer Scutum-Centaurus (OSC) spiral arm is the most distant molecular spiral arm in the Milky Way, but until recently little was known about this structure. Discovered by Dame and Thaddeus (2011), the OSC lies $\sim$15 kpc from the Galactic Center. Due to the Galactic warp, it rises to nearly 4$^{\circ}$ above the Galactic Plane in the first Galactic quadrant, leaving it unsampled by most Galactic plane surveys. Here we observe HII region candidates spatially coincident with the OSC using the Very Large Array to image radio continuum emission from 65 targets and the Green Bank Telescope to search for ammonia and water maser emission from 75 targets. This sample, drawn from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, represents every HII region candidate near the longitude-latitude (l,v) locus of the OSC. Coupled with their characteristic mid-infrared morphologies, detection of radio continuum emission strongly suggests that a target is a bona fide HII region. Detections of associated ammonia or water maser emission allow us to derive a kinematic distance and determine if the velocity of the region is consistent with that of the OSC. Nearly 60% of the observed sources were detected in radio continuum, and over 20% have ammonia or water maser detections. The velocities of these sources mainly place them beyond the Solar orbit. These very distant high-mass stars have stellar spectral types as early as O4. We associate high-mass star formation at 2 new locations with the OSC, increasing the total number of detected HII regions in the OSC to 12., Comment: 14 pages text and tables + 10 pages supplemental figures

Most models identify the X-ray bright North Polar Spur (NPS) with a hot interstellar (IS) bubble in the Sco-Cen star-forming region at $\simeq$130 pc. An opposite view considers the NPS as a distant structure associated with Galactic nuclear outflows. Constraints on the NPS distance can be obtained by comparing the foreground IS gas column inferred from X-ray absorption to the distribution of gas and dust along the line of sight. Absorbing columns towards shadowing molecular clouds simultaneously constrain the CO-H$_{2}$ conversion factor. We derived the columns of X-ray absorbing matter NH(abs) from spectral fitting of dedicated XMM-Newton observations towards the NPS southern terminus (l=29{\deg}, b=+5 to +11{\deg}). The IS matter distribution was obtained from absorption lines in stellar spectra, 3D dust maps and emission data, including high spatial resolution CO measurements recorded for this purpose. NH(abs) varies from $\simeq$ 4.3 to $\simeq$ 1.3 x 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ along the 19 fields. Relationships between X-ray brightness, absorbing column and hardness ratio demonstrate a brightness decrease with latitude governed by increasing absorption. The comparison with absorption data, local and large-scale dust maps rules out a NPS near side closer than 300 pc. The correlation between NH(abs) and the reddening increases with the sightline length from 300 pc to 4 kpc and is the tightest with Planck $\tau_{353}$-based reddening, suggesting a much larger distance. N(H)/E(B-V) $\simeq$ 4.1 x 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ mag$^{-1}$. NH(abs) absolute values are compatible with HI-CO clouds at -5 $\leq$ V(LSR) $\leq$ +25 to +45 km s$^{-1}$ and a NPS potentially far beyond the Local Arm. A molecular cloud shadow at b=+9deg constrains X$_{CO}$ to $\leq$ 1.0 x 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ km$^{-1}$ s. The circular rotation speed of the Milky Way at the solar radius, Theta_o, has been estimated to be 220 km/s by fitting the maximum velocity of HI emission as a function of Galactic longitude. This result is in tension with a recent estimate of Theta_o=240 km/s, based on VLBI parallaxes and proper motions from the BeSSeL and VERA surveys for large numbers of high-mass star forming regions across the Milky Way. We find that the rotation curve best fitted to the VLBI data is slightly curved, and that this curvature results in a biased estimate of Theta_o from the HI data when a flat rotation curve is assumed. This relieves the tension between the methods and favors Theta_o=240 km/s., Comment: 4 figures

The spiral arms of the Milky Way are being accurately located for the first time via trigonometric parallaxes of massive star forming regions with the BeSSeL Survey, using the Very Long Baseline Array and the European VLBI Network, and with the Japanese VERA project. Here we describe a computer program that leverages these results to significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of distance estimates to other sources that are known to follow spiral structure. Using a Bayesian approach, sources are assigned to arms based on their (l,b,v) coordinates with respect to arm signatures seen in CO and HI surveys. A source's kinematic distance, displacement from the plane, and proximity to individual parallax sources are also considered in generating a full distance probability density function. Using this program to estimate distances to large numbers of star forming regions, we generate a realistic visualization of the Milky Way's spiral structure as seen from the northern hemisphere., Comment: 25 pages with 16 figures; to appear in ApJ

The all-Galaxy CO survey of Dame, Hartmann, & Thaddeus (2001) is by far the most uniform, large-scale Galactic CO survey. Using a dendrogram-based decomposition of this survey, we present a catalog of 1064 massive molecular clouds throughout the Galactic plane. This catalog contains $2.5 \times 10^8$ solar masses, or $25^{+10.7}_{-5.8} \%$ of the Milky Way's estimated H$_2$ mass. We track clouds in some spiral arms through multiple quadrants. The power index of Larson's first law, the size-linewidth relation, is consistent with 0.5 in all regions - possibly due to an observational bias - but clouds in the inner Galaxy systematically have significantly (~ 30%) higher linewidths at a given size, indicating that their linewidths are set in part by Galactic environment. The mass functions of clouds in the inner Galaxy versus the outer Galaxy are both qualitatively and quantitatively distinct. The inner Galaxy mass spectrum is best described by a truncated power-law with a power index of $\gamma=-1.6\pm0.1$ and an upper truncation mass $M_0 = (1.0 \pm 0.2) \times 10^7 M_\odot$, while the outer Galaxy mass spectrum is better described by a non-truncating power law with $\gamma=-2.2\pm0.1$ and an upper mass $M_0 = (1.5 \pm 0.5) \times 10^6 M_\odot$, indicating that the inner Galaxy is able to form and host substantially more massive GMCs than the outer Galaxy. We report parallaxes and proper motions of three water maser sources in high-mass star-forming regions in the Outer Spiral Arm of the Milky Way. The observations were conducted with the Very Long Baseline Array as part of Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy Survey and double the number of such measurements in the literature. The Outer Arm has a pitch angle of 14.9 +/- 2.7 deg and a Galactocentric distance of 14.1 +/- 0.6 kpc toward the Galactic anticenter. The average motion of these sources toward the Galactic center is 10.7 +/- 2.1 km/s and we see no sign of a significant fall in the rotation curve out to 15 kpc from the Galactic center. We report measurements of trigonometric parallaxes for six high-mass star-forming regions in the Scutum spiral arm of the Milky Way as part of the BeSSeL Survey. Combining our measurements with 10 previous measurements from the BeSSeL Survey yields a total sample of 16 sources in the Scutum arm with trigonometric parallaxes in the Galactic longitude range from 5 deg to 32 deg. Assuming a logarithmic spiral model, we estimate a pitch angle of 19.8 (+/-3.1) deg for the Scutum arm, which is larger than pitch angles reported for other spiral arms. The high pitch angle of the arm may be due to the arm's proximity to the Galactic bar. The Scutum arm sources show an average peculiar motion of 4 km/s slower than the Galactic rotation and 8 km/s toward the Galactic center. While the direction of this non-circular motion has the same sign as determined for sources in other spiral arms, the motion toward the Galactic center is greater for the Scutum arm sources., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. We report trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of water masers for 12 massive star forming regions in the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way as part of the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) Survey. Combining our results with 14 parallax measurements in the literature, we estimate a pitch angle of 9.9 +/- 1.5 degrees for a section of the Perseus arm. We report measurements of parallaxes and proper motions of ten high-mass star-forming regions in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way as part of the BeSSeL Survey with the VLBA. Combining these results with eight others from the literature, we investigated the structure and kinematics of the arm between Galactocentric azimuth around -2 and 65 deg. We found that the spiral pitch angle is 7.3 +- 1.5 deg; the arm's half-width, defined as the rms deviation from the fitted spiral, is around 0.2 kpc; and the nearest portion of the Sagittarius arm is 1.4 +- 0.2 kpc from the Sun. Unlike for adjacent spiral arms, we found no evidence for significant peculiar motions of sources in the Sagittarius arm opposite to Galactic rotation., Comment: 43 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables. The Columbia - U. de Chile CO Survey of the Southern Milky Way is used for separating the CO(1-0) emission of the fourth Galactic quadrant within the solar circle into its dominant components, giant molecular clouds (GMCs). After the subtraction of an axisymmetric model of the CO background emission in the inner Southern Galaxy, 92 GMCs are identified, and for 87 of them the two-fold distance ambiguity is solved. Their total molecular mass is M(H2) = 1.14 +/- 0.05 x 10^8 Msolar accounting for around 40% of the molecular mass estimated from an axisymmetric analysis of the H2 volume density in the Galactic disk (Bronfman et al. 1988b) M(H2) disk = 3.03 x 10^8 Msolar. The large scale spiral structure in the Southern Galaxy, within the solar circle, is traced by the GMCs in our catalog; 3 spiral arm segments: the Centaurus, Norma, and 3-kpc expanding arm are analyzed. After fitting a logarithmic spiral arm model to the arms, tangent directions at 310{\deg}, 330{\deg}, and 338{\deg}, respectively, are found, consistent with previous values from the literature. A complete CS(2-1) survey toward IRAS point-like sources with FIR colors characteristic of UC HII regions is used to estimate the massive star formation rate per unit H2 mass (MSFR), and the massive star formation efficiency for GMCs. The average MSFR for GMCs is 0.41 +/- 0.06 Lsolar/Msolar, and for the most massive clouds in the Norma arm it is 0.58 +/- 0.09 Lsolar/Msolar. Massive star formation efficiencies of GMCs are on average 3% of their available molecular mass.

Over 100 trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for masers associated with young, high-mass stars have been measured with the BeSSeL Survey, a VLBA key science project, the EVN, and the Japanese VERA project. These measurements provide strong evidence for the existence of spiral arms in the Milky Way, accurately locating many arm segments and yielding spiral pitch angles ranging from 7 to 20 degrees. The widths of spiral arms increase with distance from the Galactic center. Fitting axially symmetric models of the Milky Way with the 3-D position and velocity information and conservative priors for the solar and average source peculiar motions, we estimate the distance to the Galactic center, Ro, to be 8.34 +/- 0.16 kpc, a circular rotation speed at the Sun, To, to be 240 +/- 8 km/s, and a rotation curve that is nearly flat (a slope of -0.2 +/- 0.4 km/s/kpc) between Galactocentric radii of 5 and 16 kpc. Assuming a "universal" spiral galaxy form for the rotation curve, we estimate the thin disk scale length to be 2.44 +/- 0.16 kpc. The parameters Ro and To are not highly correlated and are relatively insensitive to different forms of the rotation curve. Adopting a theoretically motivated prior that high-mass star forming regions are in nearly circular Galactic orbits, we estimate a global solar motion component in the direction of Galactic rotation, Vsun = 14.6 +/- 5.0 km/s. While To and Vsun are significantly correlated, the sum of these parameters is well constrained, To + Vsun = 255.2 +/- 5.1 km/s, as is the angular speed of the Sun in its orbit about the Galactic center, (To + Vsun)/Ro = 30.57 +/- 0.43 km/s/kpc. These parameters improve the accuracy of estimates of the accelerations of the Sun and the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar in their Galactic orbits, significantly reducing the uncertainty in tests of gravitational radiation predicted by general relativity., Comment: 38 pages, 6 tables, 6 figures; v2 fixed typos and updated pulsar section; v3 replaced fig 2 (wrong file)

We have made new CO observations of two molecular clouds, which we call "jet" and "arc" clouds, toward the stellar cluster Westerlund 2 and the TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1023-575. The jet cloud shows a linear structure from the position of Westerlund 2 on the east. In addition, we have found a new counter jet cloud on the west. The arc cloud shows a crescent shape in the west of HESS J1023-575. A sign of star formation is found at the edge of the jet cloud and gives a constraint on the age of the jet cloud to be ~Myrs. An analysis with the multi CO transitions gives temperature as high as 20 K in a few places of the jet cloud, suggesting that some additional heating may be operating locally. The new TeV gamma-ray images by H.E.S.S. correspond to the jet and arc clouds spatially better than the giant molecular clouds associated with Westerlund 2. We suggest that the jet and arc clouds are not physically linked with Westerlund 2 but are located at a greater distance around 7.5 kpc. A microquasar with long-term activity may be able to offer a possible engine to form the jet and arc clouds and to produce the TeV gamma-rays, although none of the known microquasars have a Myr age or steady TeV gamma-rays. Alternatively, an anisotropic supernova explosion which occurred ~Myr ago may be able to form the jet and arc clouds, whereas the TeV gamma-ray emission requires a microquasar formed after the explosion.

We report trigonometric parallax measurements of 22 GHz H$_2$O masers in two massive star-forming regions from VLBA observations as part of the BeSSeL Survey. The distances of $11.11^{+0.79}_{-0.69}$ kpc to W49N (G043.16+0.01) and $10.75^{+0.61}_{-0.55}$ kpc to G048.60+0.02 locate them in a distant section of the Perseus arm near the solar circle in the first Galactic quadrant. This allows us to locate accurately the inner portion of the Perseus arm for the first time. Combining the present results with sources measured in the outer portion of the arm in the second and third quadrants yields a global pitch angle of 9.5 deg +/- 1.3 deg for the Perseus arm. We have found almost no H$_2$O maser sources in the Perseus arm for 50 deg $< \ell <$ 80 deg, suggesting that this $\approx 6$ kpc section of the arm has little massive star formation activity., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, published in ApJ

We report trigonometric parallax measurements of masers in the massive star forming complex W43 from VLBA observations as part of the BeSSeL Survey. Based on measurements of three 12 GHz methanol maser sources (G029.86-00.04, G029.95-00.01 and G031.28+00.06) and one 22 GHz water maser source (G031.58+00.07) toward W43, we derived a distance of $5.49^{+0.39}_{-0.34}$ kpc to W43. By associating the masers with CO molecular clouds, and associating the clouds kinematically with CO longitude-velocity spiral features, we assign W43 to the Scutum spiral arm, close to the near end of the Galactic bar. The peculiar motion of W43 is about 20 km/s toward the Galactic Center and is very likely induced by the gravitational attraction of the bar., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report four trigonometric parallaxes for high-mass star-forming regions within 4 kpc of the Galactic center. These measurements were made with the VLBA as part of the BeSSeL Survey. By associating these sources kinematically with large-scale features in CO and HI longitude-velocity diagrams, we begin to outline some major features of the inner Milky Way: the Connecting arm, the near and far 3 kpc arms, and the Norma arm. The Connecting arm in the first Galactic quadrant lies closer to the Galactic center than the far 3 kpc arm and is offset by the long-bar's major axis near its leading edge, supporting the presence of an inner Lindblad resonance. Assuming the 3 kpc arms are a continuous physical structure, the relative Galactocentric distance of its near and far sides suggests highly elliptical streamlines of gas around the bar(s) and a bar corotation radius, r_CR > 3.6 kpc. At a Galactic longitude near 10{\deg} and a heliocentric distance of about 5 kpc, the near 3 kpc arm and the Norma arm intersect on a face-on view of our Galaxy, while passing at different Galactic latitudes. We provide an accurate distance measurement to the W31 star-forming complex of 4.95 (+0.5;-0.43) kpc from the Sun, which associates it with a bright CO feature belonging to the near 3 kpc arm., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

We report trigonometric parallaxes for water masers in the G012.88+0.48 region and in the massive star forming complex W33 (containing G012.68--0.18, G012.81--0.19, G012.90--0.24, G012.90--0.26), from the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) survey using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax distances to all these masers are consistent with $2.40^{+0.17}_{-0.15}$ kpc, which locates the W33 complex and G012.88+0.48 in the Scutum spiral arm. Our results show that W33 is a single star forming complex at about two-thirds the kinematic distance of 3.7 kpc. The luminosity and mass of this region, based on the kinematic distance, have therefore been overestimated by more than a factor of two. Trigonometric parallax measurements of nine water masers associated with the Local arm of the Milky Way were carried out as part of the BeSSeL Survey using the VLBA. When combined with 21 other parallax measurements from the literature, the data allow us to study the distribution and 3-dimensional motions of star forming regions in the spiral arm over the entire northern sky. Our results suggest that the Local arm does not have the large pitch angle characteristic of a short spur. Instead its active star formation, overall length (>5 kpc), and shallow pitch angle (~10 degrees) suggest that it is more like the adjacent Perseus and Sagittarius arms; perhaps it is a branch of one of these arms. Contrary to previous results, we find the Local arm to be closer to the Perseus than to the Sagittarius arm, suggesting that a branching from the former may be more likely. An average peculiar motion of near-zero toward both the Galactic center and north Galactic pole, and counter rotation of ~ 5 km/s were observed, indicating that the Local arm has similar kinematic properties as found for other major spiral arms., Comment: 42 pages, accepted by ApJ

We report a trigonometric parallax measurement with the Very Long Baseline Array for the water maser in the distant high-mass star-forming region G75.30+1.32. This source has a heliocentric distance of 9.25+-0.45 kpc, which places it in the Outer arm in the first Galactic quadrant. It lies 200 pc above the Galactic plane and is associated with a substantial HI enhancement at the border of a large molecular cloud. At a Galactocentric radius of 10.7 kpc, G75.30+1.32 is in a region of the Galaxy where the disk is significantly warped toward the North Galactic Pole. While the star-forming region has an instantaneous Galactic orbit that is nearly circular, it displays a significant motion of 18 km/s toward the Galactic plane. We have identified a spiral arm lying beyond the Outer Arm in the first Galactic quadrant ~15 kpc from the Galactic center. After tracing the arm in existing 21 cm surveys, we searched for molecular gas using the CfA 1.2 meter telescope and detected CO at 10 of 220 positions. The detections are distributed along the arm from l = 13 deg, v = -21 km/s to l = 55 deg, v = -84 km/s and coincide with most of the main H I concentrations. One of the detections was fully mapped to reveal a large molecular cloud with a radius of 47 pc and a molecular mass of ~50,000 Mo. At a mean distance of 21 kpc, the molecular gas in this arm is the most distant yet detected in the Milky Way. The new arm appears to be the continuation of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm in the outer Galaxy, as a symmetric counterpart of the nearby Perseus Arm., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table, ApJ Letters, in press

We describe and refine the masked moment method used to suppress noise in Galactic and extragalactic spectral line surveys. By applying the refined technique to an essentially noise-free CO molecular cloud survey with Gaussian noise added, we determine the optimum masking parameters for typical CO surveys such as those presented in Dame et al. We report HI 21-cm line observations of the AGB star X Her obtained with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the Very Large Array (VLA). We have detected HI emission totaling M_HI=2.1e-03 M_sun associated with the circumstellar envelope of the star. The HI distribution exhibits a head-tail morphology, similar to those previously observed around Mira and RS Cnc. The tail extends ~6.0' (0.24 pc) in the plane of the sky, along the direction of the star's space motion. We also detect a velocity gradient of ~6.5 km/s across the envelope, consistent with the HI tracing a turbulent wake that arises from the motion of a mass-losing star through the ISM. GBT mapping of a 2x2deg region around X Her reveals that the star lies (in projection) near the periphery of a much larger HI cloud that also exhibits signatures of ISM interaction. The properties of the cloud are consistent with those of compact high-velocity clouds. Using CO observations, we have placed an upper limit on its molecular gas content of N_H2<1.3e20 cm^-2. Although the distance to the cloud is poorly constrained, the probability of a chance coincidence in position, velocity, and apparent position angle of space motion between X Her and the cloud is extremely small, suggesting a possible physical association. However, the large HI mass of the cloud (~>2.4~M_sun) and the blueshift of its mean velocity relative to X Her are inconsistent with an origin tied directly to stellar ejection. We report a trigonometric parallax of 12 GHz methanol masers associated with the massive star forming region G9.62+0.20, corresponding to a distance of 5.2+-0.6 kpc. With a local standard of rest velocity of about 2 km/s, the region's kinematic distances of 0.5 and 16 kpc differ greatly from the distance derived here. Our measurement of the peculiar motion of the star forming region shows a very large deviation from a circular Galactic orbit: 41 km/s radially outward from the Galactic center and 60 km/s counter to Galactic rotation. The combination of its radial velocity and distance places G9.62+0.20 in the inner region of the Galaxy close to the Expanding Near 3 kpc-Arm, where the bulge/bar potential has strong gravitational influence. The high Galactic longitude end of the Aquila Rift comprises the large Aquila molecular cloud complex, however, few young stars are known to be located in the area, and only one is directly associated with the Rift. In contrast, the Serpens star-forming region at the low Galactic longitude end of the Rift contains hundreds of young stars. We review studies of the raw molecular material and describe searches for young objects in the Aquila clouds. The characteristics of the known young stars and associated jets and outflows are also provided. We report the detection in CO of the far-side counterpart of the well-known expanding 3-Kpc Arm in the central region of the Galaxy. In a CO longitude-velocity map at b = 0 deg the Far 3-Kpc Arm can be followed over at least 20 deg of Galactic longitude as a faint lane at positive velocities running parallel to the Near Arm. The Far Arm crosses l = 0 deg at +56 km/s, quite symmetric with the -53 km/s expansion velocity of the Near Arm. In addition to their symmetry in longitude and velocity, we find that the two arms have linewidths (~21 km/s), linear scale heights (~103 pc FWHM), and H2 masses per unit length (~4.3 x 10^6 Mo/kpc) that agree to 26% or better. Guided by the CO, we have also identified the Far Arm in high-resolution 21 cm data and find, subject to the poorly known CO-to-H2 ratio in these objects, that both arms are predominately molecular by a factor of 3-4. The detection of these symmetric expanding arms provides strong support for the existence of a bar at the center of our Galaxy and should allow better determination of the bar's physical properties., Comment: ApJ Letters, accepted 9 July 08

The mysterious very high energy gamma-ray source, TeV J2032+4130, is coincident with the powerful Cygnus OB2 stellar association, though a physical association between the two remains uncertain. It is possible that the detected very high energy photons are produced via an overdensity of locally accelerated cosmic rays impinging on molecular clouds in the source region. In order to test this hypothesis, we used the Kitt Peak 12m, the Heinrich-Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (HH-SMT), and the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO), to obtain observations in the J=1-->0 and J=2-->1 lines of both 12CO and 13CO. We report here on the detection of significant molecular material toward the TeV source region which could be acting as the target of locally accelerated CRs. We also find evidence of compact molecular clumps, showing large line widths in the CO spectra, possibly indicative of energetic processes in this region of Cygnus OB2., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We present BIMA observations of a 2$\arcmin$ field in the northeastern spiral arm of M31. In this region we find six giant molecular clouds that have a mean diameter of 57$\pm$13 pc, a mean velocity width of 6.5$\pm$1.2 \kms, and a mean molecular mass of 3.0 $\pm$ 1.6 $\times$ 10$^5$\Msun. The peak brightness temperature of these clouds ranges from 1.6--4.2 K. We compare these clouds to clouds in M33 observed by \citet{wilson90} using the OVRO millimeter array, and some cloud complexes in the Milky Way observed by \cite{dame01} using the CfA 1.2m telescope. In order to properly compare the single dish data to the spatially filtered interferometric data, we project several well-known Milky Way complexes to the distance of Andromeda and simulate their observation with the BIMA interferometer. We compare the simulated Milky Way clouds with the M31 and M33 data using the same cloud identification and analysis technique and find no significant differences in the cloud properties in all three galaxies. Thus we conclude that previous claims of differences in the molecular cloud properties between these galaxies may have been due to differences in the choice of cloud identification techniques. With the upcoming CARMA array, individual molecular clouds may be studied in a variety of nearby galaxies. With ALMA, comprehensive GMC studies will be feasible at least as far as the Virgo cluster. With these data, comparative studies of molecular clouds across galactic disks of all types and between different galaxy disks will be possible. Our results emphasize that interferometric observations combined with the use of a consistent cloud identification and analysis technique will be essential for such forthcoming studies that will compare GMCs in the Local Group galaxies to galaxies in the Virgo cluster., Comment: Accepted for Publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The extended TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1023-575 is coincident with the massive, young stellar cluster Westerlund 2 (Wd2) and its surrounding HII region RCW 49. On the basis of an analysis of the CO emission and 21 cm absorption along the line of sight to Wd2, it is argued that this cluster, and by assumption the TeV source as well, must be associated with a giant molecular cloud in the far side of the Carina arm with a mass of 7.5 x 10^5 Mo. Analysis of the spatial and velocity structure of the cloud reveals clear evidence of interaction with Wd2. The cloud's kinematic distance of 6.0 +/- 1.0 kpc is shown to be consistent with distances inferred both from the radius-linewidth relation of molecular clouds and from the foreground gas column derived from 230 X-ray sources in Wd2., Comment: ApJ Letter, accepted July 5, 2007. 10 pages, 4 figures (2 color)

Using Chandra observations we have measured the energy-resolved dust-scattered X-ray halo around the low-mass X-ray binary GX5-1, which shows signs of both singly- and multiply-scattered X-rays. We compared the observed X-ray halo at various energies to predictions from a range of dust models. These fits used both smoothly-distributed dust as well as dust in clumped clouds, with CO and 21 cm observations helping to determine the position of the clouds along the line of sight. We found that the BARE-GR-B model of Zubko, Dwek & Arendt (2004 generally led to the best results, although inadequacies in both the overall model and the data limit our conclusions. We also found that the composite dust models of Zubko, Dwek & Arendt (2004), especially the ``no carbon'' models, gave uniformly poor results. Although models using cloud positions and densities derived naively from CO and 21 cm data gave generally poor results, plausible adjustments to the distance of the largest cloud and the mass of a cloud in the expanding 3 kpc Arm lead to significantly improved fits. We suggest that combining X-ray halo, CO, and 21 cm observations will be a fruitful method to improve our understanding of both the gas and dust phases of the interstellar medium., Comment: 10 pages, accepted by ApJ

Spectra in the CH $^2\Pi_{1/2}$, J=1/2, F=1-1 transition at 3335 MHz were obtained in three 5-point crosses centered on the Galactic plane at $\ell =$ 50$\arcdeg$, 100$\arcdeg$, and 110$\arcdeg$. The lines of sight traverse both Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) and local, smaller entities. This transition is a good tracer of low-density molecular gas and the line profiles are very similar to CO(1-0) data at nearly the same resolution. In addition, the CH 3335 MHz line can be used to calibrate the CO-H$_2$ conversion factor (X$_{\rm CO}$) in low-density molecular gas. Although this technique underestimates X$_{\rm CO}$ in GMCs, our results are within a factor of two of X$_{\rm CO}$ values calibrated for GMCs by other techniques. The similarity of CH and CO line profiles, and that of X$_{\rm CO}$ values derived from CH and more traditional techniques, implies that most of the molecular gas along the observed lines of sight is at relatively low densities ($n \le$ 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$)., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the AJ, revised after referee report

A 3 $\times$ 3 map of the Galactic Center was made at 9$\arcmin$ resolution and 10$\arcmin$ spacing in the CH $^2\Pi_{1/2}$, J=1/2, F=1-1 transition at 3335 MHz. The CH emission shows a velocity extent that is nearly that of the CO(1-0) line, but the CH line profiles differ markedly from the CO. The 3335 MHz CH transition primarily traces low-density molecular gas and our observations indicate that the mass of this component within $\sim$ 30 pc of the Galactic Center is $\sim$ 9 $\times$ 10$^6$ M$_\odot$. The CO-H$_2$ conversion factor obtained for the low-density gas in the mapped region is greater than that thought to apply to the dense molecular gas at the Galactic Center. In addition to tracing the low-density molecular gas at the Galactic Center, the CH spectra show evidence of emission from molecular clouds along the line of sight both in the foreground and background. The scale height of these clouds ranges from 27 - 109 pc, consistent with previous work based on observations of molecular clouds in the inner Galaxy., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

For about two decades, a population of relative small and nearby molecular clouds has been known to exist at high Galactic latitudes. Lying more than 10$^\circ$ from the Galactic plane, these clouds have typical distances of $\sim$150 pc, angular sizes of $\sim1^\circ$, and masses of order tens of solar masses. These objects are passive sources of high-energy $\gamma$-rays through cosmic ray-gas interactions. Using a new wide-angle CO survey of the northern sky, we show that typical high-latitude clouds are not bright enough in $\gamma$-rays to have been detected by EGRET, but that of order 100 of them will be detectable by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on GLAST. Thus, we predict a new steady population of $\gamma$-ray sources at high Galactic latitudes, perhaps the most numerous after active galactic nuclei., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We report the results of a new large scale survey of the Orion-Monoceros complex of molecular clouds made in the J = 1->0 line of CO with the Harvard-Smithsonian 1.2m millimetre-wave telescope. The survey consists of 52,288 uniformly spaced spectra that cover an area of 432 square degrees on the sky and is the most sensitive large-scale survey of the region to date. Distances to the constituent molecular clouds of the complex, estimated from an analysis of foreground and background stars, have provided information on the three dimensional structure of the entire complex., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 19 pages with 17 colour figures - 39 if you count the sub-figures separately. We present high-resolution X-ray observations of the small-diameter supernova remnant (SNR) G349.7+0.2 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The overall SNR spectrum can be described by two spectral components. The soft component is in ionization equilibrium and has a temperature of ~0.8 keV; the hard spectral component has a temperature of ~1.4 keV, an ionization timescale of ~5x10^{11} cm{-3}s and enhanced abundances of Si. The spatially resolved spectral modeling shows that S may also be enhanced, at least in some regions. The enhanced abundances clearly point to the presence of an ejecta component in this remnant. The X-ray morphology of G349.7+0.2 is strikingly similar to that at radio wavelengths - an irregular shell with a brighter eastern side - which is consistent with expansion in a medium with a large scale density gradient. The remnant is known to be interacting with a molecular cloud (from the presence of OH(1720 MHz) masers), but this interaction is probably limited to the central portion of the SNR, as seen in SNR IC 443. We found that HI clouds are present in the SNR region, which supports the notion that G349.7+0.2 belongs to a class of remnants evolving in the intercloud medium (such are IC 443 and W44, Chevalier 1999), which is also responsible for the remnant's morphology. G349.7+0.2 does not have the mixed-morphology found for other maser-emitting SNRs studied to date in X-rays, but its morphology can be explained by a projection model for mixed-morphology SNRs. We have identified a point source close to the center of the SNR with a luminosity of Lx(0.5-10.0 keV) ~ (0.2-2.3)x10^{34} d_{22} erg/s, which is consistent with that of the compact central objects found in a few other Galactic SNRs., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, typos fixed

The Galactic CO survey of Dame, Hartmann, & Thaddeus (2001; hereafter DHT) is composed of both large-scale unbiased surveys, mainly concentrated within 10-deg of the Galactic plane, and targeted observations of clouds at higher latitudes. Analysis of all-sky IRAS and 21 cm maps suggests that the DHT survey is nearly complete for clouds larger than ~1 deg, even though roughly half of the total area at |b| < 30 deg was not observed. In October 2001 we began a new survey of all of this unobserved area that is accessible to the northern 1.2 meter telescope, approximately 6,600 deg^2 between l = 0 deg and 230 deg, mainly in the latitude range |b| = 10-30 deg. At least 12 hours per day is being dedicated to this large project, which is sampled every 1/4-deg (every other beamwidth) to an rms sensitivity of 0.19 K at a velocity resolution of 0.65 km/s. As of May 2003, we have obtained 90,000 of the 106,000 spectra required to complete the survey. While, as expected, the new observations do not substantially change the DHT map, ~68 relatively small and isolated molecular clouds at intermediate latitudes have so far been discovered. The survey has also been extended to b < -30 deg in two regions, one in the vicinity of the large MBM clouds 53-55 at l ~ 90 deg and the other south of the Taurus clouds at l ~170 deg. Massive OB stars play an important role in the evolution of molecular clouds and star forming regions. The OB stars both photo--ionize molecular gas as well as sweep up and compress interstellar gas through winds, ionization fronts, and supernovae. In this contribution, we examine the effect massive stars have on the formation of young stellar clusters. We first discuss the processes by which OB stars destroy cluster--forming molecular cores, and hence terminate star formation. We overview observational evidence that OB stars forming in young stellar clusters destroy their parental cores on a timescale of 0.1 Myr, and we discuss some of the implications of this result. We then summarize extensive observations of the NGC 281 molecular cloud complex, and present evidence that two types of triggered star formation are occurring in this complex. New large-scale CO surveys of the first and second Galactic quadrants and the nearby molecular cloud complexes in Orion and Taurus, obtained with the CfA 1.2 m telescope, have been combined with 31 other surveys obtained over the past two decades with that instrument and a similar telescope on Cerro Tololo in Chile, to produce a new composite CO survey of the entire Milky Way. The survey consists of 488,000 spectra that Nyquist or beamwidth (1/8-deg) sample the entire Galactic plane over a strip 4-10 deg wide in latitude, and beamwidth or 1/4-deg sample nearly all large local clouds at higher latitudes. A map of molecular column density predicted from complete and unbiased far-infrared and 21 cm surveys of the Galaxy was used both to determine the completeness of the present survey and to extrapolate it to the entire sky at |b| < 32 deg. The close agreement of the observed and predicted maps implies that only ~2% of the total CO emission at |b| < 32 deg lies outside our current sampling. Taking into account this small amount of unobserved emission, the mean molecular column density decreases from ~3 E20 cm-2 at |b| = 5 deg to ~0.1 E20 cm-2 at |b| = 30 deg. The ratio of the predicted molecular column density map to the observed CO intensity map provides a calibration of the CO-to-H2 mass conversion factor X = N(H2)/Wco. Out of the Galactic plane (|b| > 5 deg), X shows little systematic variation with latitude from a mean value of 1.8 +/- 0.3 E20 cm-2 K-1 km-1 s. Given the large sky area and large quantity of CO data analyzed, we conclude that this is the most reliable measurement to date of the mean X value in the solar neighborhood., Comment: Accepted 11 Sept 2000 for publication in the ApJ. 49 pages, 15 figures (6 color). We present new observations of a 2' field in the north-eastern spiral arm of M31. In the 0.8 x 3.6 kpc mosaicked region, we have detected six distinct, large complexes of molecular gas, most of which lie along the spiral arm dust lane or in the vicinity of HII regions. The mean properties of these complexes are as follows: diameter ~ 57+/-13 pc, fwhm velocity ~ 6.5+/-1.2 km/s, M(CO) ~ 3.0+/-1.6 x 10^5 solar masses, peak brightness temperatures ~ 1.6--4.2 K. We investigate the effects of spatial filtering on the quantitative comparison of Local Group and Milky Way giant molecular clouds properties and distributions. We also discuss different cloud identification techniques and their impact on derived cloud properties. When we employ the same cloud identification method and account for differences in data acquisition for M31, Milky Way, and M33, we find that the molecular cloud complexes in all three galaxies are similar. While the global distribution of molecular gas may vary from galaxy to galaxy, cloud complexes are similar, suggesting that cloud formation and destruction is determined by local physics. We report millimeter observations of the line of sight to the recently discovered Soft Gamma Repeater, SGR 1627-41, which has been tentatively associated with the supernova remnant SNR G337.0-0.1 Among the eight molecular clouds along the line of sight to SGR 1627-41, we show that SNR G337.0-0.1 is probably interacting with one of the most massive giant molecular clouds (GMC) in the Galaxy, at a distance of 11 kpc from the sun. Based on the high extinction to the persistent X-ray counterpart of SGR 1627-41, we present evidence for an association of this new SGR with the SNR G337.0-0.1; they both appear to be located on the near side of the GMC. This is the second SGR located near an extraordinarily massive GMC. We suggest that SGR 1627-41 is a neutron star with a high transverse velocity (~ 1,000 \kms) escaping the young (~ 5,000 years) supernova remnant G337.0-0.1, Comment: 17 pages, including 2 figures. A mosaic of 5 \ros~PSPC pointed observations in the Galactic plane ($l\sim25^{\circ}$) reveals X-ray shadows in the $0.5-2.0$ keV band cast by distant molecular clouds. The observed on-cloud and off-cloud X-ray fluxes indicate that $\sim15$% and $\sim37$% of the diffuse X-ray background in this direction in the \tq~keV and 1.5 keV bands, respectively, originates behind the molecular gas which is located at $\sim$3 kpc from the Sun. The implication of the derived background X-ray flux beyond the absorbing molecular cloud is consistent with, and lends further support to recent observations of a Galactic X-ray bulge., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We present CO(J=1-0) observations in the direction of the Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 1806-20 with the SEST telescope. We detected several molecular clouds, and we discuss in this paper the implications of these observations for the distance to the X-ray counterpart AX 1805.7-2025, the supernova remnant G10.0-0.3 and the very luminous O9-B2 star detected in the line of sight. The distance of SGR 1806-20 is estimated to be 14.5 +/- 1.4 kpc and this Soft Gamma Repeater is very likely associated with one of the brightest HII regions in the Galaxy, W31. The large size of G10.0-0.3 (25 x 38 pc) for a young supernova remnant possibly powered by a central pulsar (AX 1805.7-2025) indicates that G10.0-0.3 could be expanding in the very low density region produced by the wind of the blue star., Comment: 20 pages, four postscript figures, LaTeX.
