Abstract

The $^{18}$Ne(d,t)$^{17}$Ne and $^{18}$Ne(d,$^3$He)$^{17}$F single-nucleon pickup reactions were measured at 16.5 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics together with elastic and inelastic scattering channels. The full set of measured exclusive differential cross sections was compared with the mirror reaction channels on stable $^{18}$O after consistent reanalysis using coupled reaction channels calculations. Within this interpretation scheme, most of the spectroscopic factors extracted for the population of unbound states in $^{17}$F match within uncertainties with their mirror partners in $^{17}$O. However, for the deeply-bound neutron removal channel to $^{17}$Ne, a significant symmetry breaking with the mirror proton-removal channel leading to $^{17}$N is evidenced by an overall single-particle strength reduction.

Abstract

The SPIRAL1 charge breeder is now under operation. Radioactive beam has already been delivered [1] to Physicist for performing experiment. Although charge breeding efficiencies demonstrated high performances for stable ion beams, those efficiencies regarding radioactive ion beams were found, in the first experiments, lower than expected. The beam optics, prior to the injection of the 1+ ions into the SPIRAL1 charge breeder, is of prime importance [2] for getting such high efficiencies. Moreover, the intensities of the radioactive ion beams are so low, that it is really difficult to tune the charge breeder. The tuning of the charge breeder for radioactive ion beams requires a particular procedure often referred as blind tuning. A stable beam hav-ing a close Brho (few percent) is required to find out the set of optic parameters preceding the tuning of the radioactive beam. Hence, it has been decided to focus our effort on that procedure as to get control of the 1+ beam optics leading to high charge breeding efficiencies whatever the 1+ mass, energy and Target Ion Source System (TISS) used. Being aware that each TISS provide ion beams with a specific energy spread DeltaE, and given that the acceptance energy win-dow of the charge breeder is rather narrow; that parameter must play also an important role in the whole charge breed-ing efficiency., Comment: 7 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Physical Review Accelerators and Beams

Abstract

An inelastic $\alpha$-scattering experiment on the unstable $N=Z$, doubly-magic $^{56}$Ni nucleus was performed in inverse kinematics at an incident energy of 50 A.MeV at GANIL. High multiplicity for $\alpha$-particle emission was observed within the limited phase-space of the experimental setup. This observation cannot be explained by means of the statistical-decay model. The ideal classical gas model at $kT$ = 0.4 MeV reproduces fairly well the experimental momentum distribution and the observed multiplicity of $\alpha$ particles corresponds to an excitation energy around 96 MeV. The method of distributed $m\alpha$-decay ensembles is in agreement with the experimental results if we assume that the $\alpha$-gas state in $^{56}$Ni exists at around $113^{+15}_{-17}$ MeV. These results suggest that there may exist an exotic state consisting of many $\alpha$ particles at the excitation energy of $113^{+15}_{-17}$ MeV., Comment: Accepted for publication in the European Physical Journal A

Abstract

We report on the construction of a UHV compatible 40 mm active diameter detector based on micro channel plates and assembled directly on the feed-throughs of a DN63CF flange. It is based on the charge division technique and uses a standard two inch Si wafer as a collector. The front end electronic is placed directly on the air side of the flange allowing excellent immunity to noise and a very good timing signal with reduced ringing. The important aberrations are corrected empirically providing and absolute positioning accuracy of 500 $\mu$m while a 150 $\mu$m resolution is measured in the center., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, submited to Review of Scientific Instrument

Abstract

Active targets, such as the ACtive TARget and Time Projection Chamber (ACTAR TPC) being developed at GANIL, are detection systems that operate on the basis of a time projection chamber but where the filling gas also serves as a thick target for nuclear reactions. In nuclear physics experiments, the energy resolution is of primary importance to identify the reaction products and to precisely reconstruct level schemes of nuclei. These measurements are based on the energy deposited on a pixelated pad plane. A MICROMEGAS detector is used in ACTAR TPC for the ionization electron collection and amplification, and it is a major contributor to the energy dispersion through, for example, inhomogeneities of the amplification gap. A variation of one percent in the gap can lead to an amplitude variation of more than two percent which is of the same order as the resolution obtained with an energy deposition of 5 MeV. One way to calibrate the pad plane is through the use of a two dimensional source scanning table. It is used to calibrate the gain inhomogeneities and, using MAGBOLTZ calculations, deduce the corresponding gap variations. The inverse of this method would allow the relative gain variations to be calculated for the different gas mixtures and pressures used in experiments with ACTAR TPC.

Abstract

Double differential (angular and energy) neutron distributions were measured using an activation foil technique. Reactions were induced by impinging two low-energy heavy-ion beams accelerated with the GANIL CSS1 cyclotron: (36S (12 MeV/u) and 208Pb (6.25 MeV/u)) onto thick natCu targets. Results have been compared to Monte-Carlo calculations from two codes (PHITS and FLUKA) for the purpose of benchmarking radiation protection and shielding requirements. This comparison suggests a disagreement between calculations and experiment, particularly for high-energy neutrons.

Abstract

In a proof-of-principle measurement, the Maya active target detector was employed for a 12C(p, p) resonant elastic scattering experiment in inverse kinematics. The excitation energy region from 0 to 3MeV above the proton breakup threshold in 13N was investigated in a single measurement. By using the capability of the detector to localize the reaction vertex and record the tracks of the recoiling protons, data covering a large solid angle could be utilized, at the same time keeping an energy resolution comparable with that of direct-kinematics measurements. The excitation spectrum in 13N was fitted using the R-matrix formalism. The level parameters extracted are in good agreement with previous studies. The active target proved its potential for the study of resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with radioactive beams, when detection efficiency is of primary importance.

Abstract

New facilities like FAIR at GSI or SPIRAL2 at GANIL, will provide radioactive ion beams at low energies (less than 10 MeV/n). Such beams have generally a large emittance, which requires the use of beam tracking detectors to reconstruct the exact trajectories of the nuclei. To avoid the angular and energy straggling that classical beam tracking detectors would generate in the beam due to their thickness, we propose the use of SED (Secondary Electron Detectors). It consists of a low pressure gaseous detector placed outside the beam coupled to an emissive foil in the beam. Since 2008, different low pressure gaseous detectors (wire chambers and micromegas) have been constructed and tested. The performances achievable at low pressure are similar to or even better than the ones at atmospheric pressure. The fast charge collection leads to excellent timing properties as well as high counting rate capabilities. Several micromegas at low pressure were tested in the laboratory demonstrating a good time resolution, 13030 ps, which is compatible with the results obtained with wire chambers.

Abstract

In a proof-of-principle measurement, the Maya active target detector was employed for a C( p, p) resonant elastic scattering experiment in inverse kinematics. The excitation energy region from 0 to 3MeV above the proton breakup threshold in N was investigated in a single measurement. By using the capability of the detector to localize the reaction vertex and record the tracks of the recoiling protons, data covering a large solid angle could be utilized, at the same time keeping an energy resolution comparable with that of direct-kinematics measurements. The excitation spectrum in N was fitted using the R-matrix formalism. The level parameters extracted are in good agreement with previous studies. The active target proved its potential for the study of resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with radioactive beams, when detection efficiency is of primary importance. Abstract

The charge breeder of the SPIRAL1 (SP1CB) facility provided this year to physicists new Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) for experiments and machine development, showing significantly improved performances compared to those obtained during the initial on-line commissioning of the SPIRAL 1 upgraded facility [1]. These improved performances were obtained thanks to thorough studies conducted off-line with 1+ ion beams produced by FEBIAD and ECR ion sources, successfully demonstrating the ability to couple SP1CB with them. In particular, the SP1CB established its capability to efficiently boost condensable elements such as 19Fn+, 32Sn+ and 54Fen+, in addition to more standard alkali elements. The charge breeding efficiencies have been investigated varying several parameters: buffer gas, beam transverse emittances. The ΔV curves of stable elements as well as radioactive ones were recorded for high charge states. Their trends are discussed in more detail. Finally, as molecular beams provide some advantages compared to atomic ion beams for selecting isobaric species and optimizing transport of the radioactive elements from the hot production target to the SP1CB plasma, we discuss if the charge-breeding efficiencies could also take advantage of beams in the molecular form. The performances of the 1+/N+ charge-breeding process were investigated using SF6 molecules broken into SFx 1+ ions and compared to regular F1+ and S1+ ions. This contribution will deal with these topics and latest results will be showed.
