Search

A new model grid containing 228,016 synthetic red supergiant explosions (Type II supernovae) is introduced. Time evolution of spectral energy distributions from 1 A to 50,000 A (100 frequency bins in a log scale) is computed at each time step up to 500 days after explosion in each model. We provide light curves for the filters of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), Sloan Digital Sky Servey (SDSS), and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, but light curves for any photometric filters can be constructed by convolving any filter response functions to the synthetic spectral energy distributions. We also provide bolometric light curves and photosphere information such as photospheric velocity evolution. The parameter space covered by the model grid is five progenitor masses (10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 Msun at the zero-age main sequence, solar metallicity), ten explosion energies (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 x 10^51 erg), nine 56Ni masses (0.001, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 Msun), nine mass-loss rates (1e-5.0, 1e-4.5, 1e-4.0, 1e-3.5, 1e-3.0, 1e-2.5, 1e-2.0, 1e-1.5, and 1e-1.0 Msun/yr with a wind velocity of 10 km/s), six circumstellar matter radii (1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 x 10^14 cm), and ten circumstellar structures (beta = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0). 56Ni is assumed to be uniformly mixed up to the half mass of a hydrogen-rich envelope. This model grid can be a base for rapid characterizations of Type II supernovae with sparse photometric sampling expected in LSST through a Bayesian approach, for example. We present a method for analyzing supernova remnants (SNRs) by diagnosing the drivers responsible for structure at different angular scales. First, we perform a suite of hydrodynamic models of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) as a supernova collides with its surrounding medium. Using these models we demonstrate how power spectral analysis can be used to attribute which scales in a SNR are driven by RTI and which must be caused by intrinsic asymmetries in the initial explosion. We predict the power spectrum of turbulence driven by RTI and identify a dominant angular mode which represents the largest scale that efficiently grows via RTI. We find that this dominant mode relates to the density scale height in the ejecta, and therefore reveals the density profile of the SN ejecta. If there is significant structure in a SNR on angular scales larger than this mode, then it is likely caused by anisotropies in the explosion. Structure on angular scales smaller than the dominant mode exhibits a steep scaling with wavenumber, possibly too steep to be consistent with a turbulent cascade, and therefore might be determined by the saturation of RTI at different length scales (although systematic 3D studies are needed to investigate this). We also demonstrate, consistent with previous studies, that this power spectrum is independent of the magnitude and length scales of perturbations in the surrounding medium and therefore this diagnostic is unaffected by ``clumpiness" in the CSM., 9 pages, 5 figures. We present a hyperspectral cube of the Crab Nebula obtained with the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer SITELLE on the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope. We describe our techniques used to deconvolve the 310 000 individual spectra (R = 9 600) containing Halpha, [NII]6548,6583, and [SII]6716,6731 emission lines and create a detailed three-dimensional reconstruction of the supernova remnant assuming uniform global expansion. We find that the general boundaries of the 3D volume occupied by the Crab are not strictly ellipsoidal as commonly assumed, and instead appear to follow a "heart-shaped" distribution that is symmetrical about the plane of the pulsar wind torus. Conspicuous restrictions in the bulk distribution of gas consistent with constrained expansion coincide with positions of the dark bays and east-west band of He-rich filaments, which may be associated with interaction with a pre-existing circumstellar disk. The distribution of filaments follows an intricate honeycomb-like arrangement with straight and rounded boundaries at large and small scales that are anti-correlated with distance from the center of expansion. The distribution is not unlike the large-scale rings observed in supernova remnants 3C 58 and Cassiopeia A, where it has been attributed to turbulent mixing processes that encouraged outwardly expanding plumes of radioactive 56Ni-rich ejecta. These characteristics reflect critical details of the original supernova of 1054 CE and its progenitor star, and may favour a low-energy explosion of an iron-core progenitor. This Letter presents the detection of a source at the position of the Type Ib/c supernova (SN) 2013ge more than four years after the radioactive component is expected to have faded. This source could mark the first post-SN direct detection of a surviving companion to a stripped-envelope Type Ib/c explosion. We test this hypothesis and find the shape of the source's spectral energy distribution is most consistent with that of a B5 I supergiant. While binary models tend to predict OB-type stars for stripped-envelope companions, the location of the source on a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) places it redward of its more likely position on the main sequence (MS). The source may be temporarily out of thermal equilibrium, or a cool and inflated non-MS companion, which is similar to the suggested companion of Type Ib SN 2019yvr that was constrained from pre-SN imaging. We also consider other possible physical scenarios for the source, including a fading SN, circumstellar shock interaction, line of site coincidence, and an unresolved host star cluster, all of which will require future observations to more definitively rule out. We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_{\nu}\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment we find that AT2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow ($v\sim$0.1-0.2$c$) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot M\approx10^{-3}M_{\rm{sol}}$yr$^{-1}$ for an assumed wind velocity of $v_w=1000$kms$^{-1}$). Similar to AT2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT2018cow, and establish AT2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically-luminous FBOTs with luminous multi-wavelength counterparts., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. We present the results from our seven-year long broad-band X-ray observing campaign of SN\,2014C with \emph{Chandra} and \emph{NuSTAR}. These coordinated observations represent the first look at the evolution of a young extragalactic SN in the 0.3-80 keV energy range in the years after core collapse. We find that the spectroscopic metamorphosis of SN\,2014C from an ordinary type Ib SN into an interacting SN with copious hydrogen emission is accompanied by luminous X-rays reaching $L_x\approx 5.6\times10^{40}\, \rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ (0.3--100 keV) at $\sim 1000$ days post explosion and declining as $L_x\propto t^{-1}$ afterwards. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is of thermal origin and shows clear evidence for cooling after peak, with $T(t)\approx 20 \,{\rm keV}(t/t_{\rm pk})^{-0.5}$. Soft X-rays of sub-keV energy suffer from large photoelectric absorption originating from the local SN environment with $NH_{\rm int}(t)\approx3\times 10^{22}(t/400 \,\rm{days})^{-1.4}\,\rm{cm^{-2}}$. We interpret these findings as the result of the interaction of the SN shock with a dense ($n\approx 10^{5}-10^{6}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$), H-rich disk-like circumstellar medium (CSM) with inner radius $\sim2\times 10^{16}$ cm and extending to $\sim 10^{17}$ cm. Based on the declining $NH_{\rm int}(t)$ and X-ray luminosity evolution, we infer a CSM mass of $\sim(1.2\,f$--2.0$\sqrt{f}) \rm{M_{\odot}}$, where $f$ is the volume filling factor. Finally, we place SN\,2014C in the context of 119 core-collapse SNe with evidence for strong shock interaction with a thick circumstellar medium and we highlight the challenges that the current mass-loss theories (including wave-driven mass loss, binary interaction and line-driven winds) face when interpreting the wide dynamic ranges of CSM parameters inferred from observations., Comment: We recognize that the supernova within our sample is non-exhaustive, please email daniel_brethauer@berkeley.edu for suggestions of additional core-collapse interacting supernovae

We analyze a sample of 45 Type II supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public survey using a grid of hydrodynamical models in order to assess whether theoretically-driven forecasts can intelligently guide follow up observations supporting all-sky survey alert streams. We estimate several progenitor properties and explosion physics parameters including zero-age-main-sequence (ZAMS) mass, mass-loss rate, kinetic energy, 56Ni mass synthesized, host extinction, and the time of explosion. Using complete light curves we obtain confident characterizations for 34 events in our sample, with the inferences of the remaining 11 events limited either by poorly constraining data or the boundaries of our model grid. We also simulate real-time characterization of alert stream data by comparing our model grid to various stages of incomplete light curves (t less than 25 days, t less than 50 days, all data), and find that some parameters are more reliable indicators of true values at early epochs than others. Specifically, ZAMS mass, time of explosion, steepness parameter beta, and host extinction are reasonably constrained with incomplete light curve data, whereas mass-loss rate, kinetic energy and 56Ni mass estimates generally require complete light curves spanning greater than 100 days. We conclude that real-time modeling of transients, supported by multi-band synthetic light curves tailored to survey passbands, can be used as a powerful tool to identify critical epochs of follow up observations. Extensive archival \textit{Hubble Space Telescope}, \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope}, and Large Binocular Telescope imaging of the recent intermediate-luminosity transient, AT~2019krl in M74, reveal a bright optical and mid-infrared progenitor star. While the optical peak of the event was missed, a peak was detected in the infrared with an absolute magnitude of $M_{4.5\,\mu {\rm m}} = -18.4$ mag, leading us to infer a visual-wavelength peak absolute magnitude of $-$13.5 to $-$14.5. The pre-discovery light curve indicated no outbursts over the previous 16\,yr. The colors, magnitudes, and inferred temperatures of the progenitor best match a 13--14 M$_{\sun}$ yellow or blue supergiant (BSG), if only foreground extinction is taken into account, or a hotter and more massive star, if any additional local extinction is included. A pre-eruption spectrum of the star reveals strong H$\alpha$ and [N~{\sc ii}] emission with wings extending to $\pm 2000$\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The post-eruption spectrum is fairly flat and featureless with only H$\alpha$, \ion{Na}{1}~D, [\ion{Ca}{2}], and the \ion{Ca}{2} triplet in emission. As in many previous intermediate-luminosity transients, AT~2019krl shows remarkable observational similarities to luminous blue variable (LBV) giant eruptions, SN~2008S-like events, and massive-star mergers. However, the information about the pre-eruption star favors either a relatively unobscured BSG or a more extinguished LBV with $M > 20$\,M$_{\sun}$ likely viewed pole-on., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 8-Jun-21

The large quantities of dust that have been found in a number of high redshift galaxies have led to suggestions that core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are the main sources of their dust and have motivated the measurement of the dust masses formed by local CCSNe. For Cassiopeia~A, an oxygen-rich remnant of a Type~IIb CCSN, a dust mass of 0.6-1.1~M$_\odot$ has already been determined by two different methods, namely (a) from its far-infrared spectral energy distribution and (b) from analysis of the red-blue emission line asymmetries in its integrated optical spectrum. We present a third, independent, method for determining the mass of dust contained within Cas~A. This compares the relative fluxes measured in similar apertures from [O~{\sc iii}] far-infrared and visual-region emission lines, taking into account foreground dust extinction, in order to determine internal dust optical depths, from which corresponding dust masses can be obtained. Massive stars can shed material via steady, line-driven winds, eruptive outflows, or mass-transfer onto a binary companion. In the case of single stars, the mass is deposited by the stellar wind into the nearby environment. After the massive star explodes, the stellar ejecta interact with this circumstellar material (CSM), often-times resulting in bright X-ray line emission from both the shock-heated CSM and ejecta. The amount of material lost by the progenitor, the mass of ejecta, and its energetics all impact the bulk spectral characteristics of this X-ray emission. Here we present a grid of core-collapse supernova remnant models derived from models for massive stars with zero age main sequence masses of $\sim$ 10 - 30 M$_\odot$ evolved from the pre-main sequence stage with wind-driven mass-loss. Evolution is handled by a multi-stage pipeline of software packages. First, we use mesa (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) to evolve the progenitors from pre-main sequence to iron core collapse. We then use the Supernova Explosion Code (snec) to explode the mesa models, and follow them for the first 100 days following core-collapse. Finally, we couple the snec output, along with the CSM generated from mesa mass-loss rates, into the Cosmic-Ray Hydrodynamics code (ChN) to model the remnant phase to 7000 years post core-collapse. At the end of each stage, we compare our outputs with those found in the literature, and we examine any qualitative and quantitative differences in the bulk properties of the remnants and their spectra based on the initial progenitor mass, as well as mass-loss history., 19 pages, 25 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ

Blazars represent about 62% of the sources in the ?-ray Fermi-LAT catalog, and about 80% of the ?-ray sources associated with a lower-energy counterpart, dominating the ?-ray sky. In particular, about 42% of the ?-ray blazars are classified as Blazars Candidates of Uncertain type (BCUs) for which spectroscopic observations are mandatory to confirm their blazar nature. Here we report the spectra of 64 targets observed as part of our follow-up optical spectroscopic campaign. This sample includes 62 sources classified in Fermi-LAT catalog as BCUs, one source classified as a generic active galactic nucleus, and one source classified as a BL Lac in Fermi-LAT and as blazar of uncertain type in the Roma-BZCAT catalog. We confirm the blazar nature of all BCUs. We classify 33 of them as BL Lacs, 11 as Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars, and 18 as blazars with nonnegligible host-galaxy emission. We also classify the generic active galactic nucleus as a BL Lac. Finally, we confirm the classification of the BL Lac. We also reported a lower limit redshift for 43 sources. For 20 sources, we got redshift measurements consistent with the literature values. For the other 21 sources, we obtained their first spectroscopic redshift measurement; while, for two sources, we provide lower limits on the redshift. With the upcoming release of the sixth edition of the Roma-BZCAT Multifrequency Catalog of Blazars, we take the opportunity in the present work to present the collective results of the first phase of our optical spectroscopic follow-up campaign. © 2021. We report on new Very Long Baseline Interferometry radio measurements of supernova 2014C in the spiral galaxy NGC 7331, made with the European VLBI Network ~5 yr after the explosion, as well as on flux density measurements made with the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). SN 2014C was an unusual supernova, initially of Type Ib, but over the course of ~1 yr it developed strong H$\alpha$ lines, implying the onset of strong interaction with some H-rich circumstellar medium (CSM). The expanding shock-front interacted with a dense shell of circumstellar material during the first year, but has now emerged from the dense shell and is expanding into the lower density CSM beyond. Our new VLBI observations show a relatively clear shell structure and continued expansion with some deceleration, with a suggestion that the deceleration is increasing at the latest times. Our multi-frequency VLA observations show a relatively flat powerlaw spectrum with $S_\nu \propto \nu^{-0.56 \pm 0.03}$, and show no decline in the radio luminosity since $t\sim1$ yr., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; This version corrects the typesetting of one equation and has other minor fixes

Type IIb supernovae (SNe IIb) present a unique opportunity for investigating the evolutionary channels and mechanisms governing the evolution of stripped-envelope SN progenitors due to a variety of observational constraints available. Comparison of these constraints with the full distribution of theoretical properties not only help ascertain the prevalence of observed properties in nature, but can also reveal currently unobserved populations. In this follow-up paper, we use the large grid of models presented in Sravan et al. 2019 to derive distributions of single and binary SNe IIb progenitor properties and compare them to constraints from three independent observational probes: multi-band SN light-curves, direct progenitor detections, and X-ray/radio observations. Consistent with previous work, we find that while current observations exclude single stars as SN IIb progenitors, SN IIb progenitors in binaries can account for them. We also find that the distributions indicate the existence of an unobserved dominant population of binary SNe IIb at low metallicity that arise due to mass transfer initiated on the Hertzsprung Gap. We carry out a comprehensive analysis of supernova \snem\ covering a period of 19 years since discovery. SN 2001em is the oldest supernova known to have undergone a metamorphosis from a stripped envelope to an interacting supernova. An early spectrum indicates it exploded as a Type Ib supernova. Later, the ejecta caught up with a dense circumstellar H-shell, ejected a few thousand years before the explosion, triggering interaction between the supernova ejecta and the dense shell, producing radio, X-ray and H$\alpha$ emission. We use archival data with the Very Large Array in radio bands and with Chandra, XMM-NEWTON and SWIFT-XRT in X-ray bands, along with published H$\alpha$ measurements. We combine these data with our low radio frequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at two epochs covering three frequencies. While the observations missed the phase when the shock entered the dense shell, the X-rays indicate that the shock came out of the dense shell at around 1750 days. The data suggest a forward shock origin of the X-ray emission. Radio data show a spectral inversion at late epochs ($> 5000$\,d) at around 3 GHz, which mimics the properties of the central absorbed component seen in SN 1986J. A possible explanation for this component is that the progenitor of \snem\ was a massive binary system which had undergone a period of common envelope evolution. We present X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) CRTS-CSS161010 J045834-081803 (CSS161010 hereafter) at t=69-531 days. CSS161010 shows luminous X-ray ($L_x\sim5\times 10^{39}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) and radio ($L_{\nu}\sim10^{29}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}Hz^{-1}}$) emission. The radio emission peaked at ~100 days post transient explosion and rapidly decayed. We interpret these observations in the context of synchrotron emission from an expanding blastwave. CSS161010 launched a mildly relativistic outflow with velocity $\Gamma\beta c\ge0.55c$ at ~100 days. This is faster than the non-relativistic AT2018cow ($\Gamma\beta c\sim0.1c$) and closer to ZTF18abvkwla ($\Gamma\beta c\ge0.3c$ at 63 days). The inferred initial kinetic energy of CSS161010 ($E_k\gtrsim10^{51}$ erg) is comparable to that of long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), but the ejecta mass that is coupled to the mildly relativistic outflow is significantly larger ($\sim0.01-0.1\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$). This is consistent with the lack of observed gamma-rays. The luminous X-rays were produced by a different emission component to the synchrotron radio emission. CSS161010 is located at ~150 Mpc in a dwarf galaxy with stellar mass $M_{*}\sim10^{7}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$ and specific star formation rate $sSFR\sim 0.3\,\rm{Gyr^{-1}}$. This mass is among the lowest inferred for host-galaxies of explosive transients from massive stars. Our observations of CSS161010 are consistent with an engine-driven aspherical explosion from a rare evolutionary path of a H-rich stellar progenitor, but we cannot rule out a stellar tidal disruption event on a centrally-located intermediate mass black hole. The classification of supernovae (SNe) and its impact on our understanding of the explosion physics and progenitors have traditionally been based on the presence or absence of certain spectral features. However, current and upcoming wide-field time-domain surveys have increased the transient discovery rate far beyond our capacity to obtain even a single spectrum of each new event. We must therefore rely heavily on photometric classification, connecting SN light curves back to their spectroscopically defined classes. Here we present Superphot, an open-source Python implementation of the machine-learning classification algorithm of Villar et al., and apply it to 2315 previously unclassified transients from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey for which we obtained spectroscopic host-galaxy redshifts. Our classifier achieves an overall accuracy of 82%, with completenesses and purities of >80% for the best classes (SNe Ia and superluminous SNe). For the worst performing SN class (SNe Ibc), the completeness and purity fall to 37% and 21%, respectively. Our classifier provides 1257 newly classified SNe Ia, 521 SNe II, 298 SNe Ibc, 181 SNe IIn, and 58 SLSNe. These are among the largest uniformly observed samples of SNe available in the literature and will enable a wide range of statistical studies of each class., Updated to match published version in ApJ. We present panchromatic observations and modeling of the Calcium-rich supernova 2019ehk in the star-forming galaxy M100 (d$\approx$16.2 Mpc) starting 10 hours after explosion and continuing for ~300 days. SN 2019ehk shows a double-peaked optical light curve peaking at $t = 3$ and $15$ days. The first peak is coincident with luminous, rapidly decaying $\textit{Swift}$-XRT discovered X-ray emission ($L_x\approx10^{41}~\rm{erg~s^{-1}}$ at 3 days; $L_x \propto t^{-3}$), and a Shane/Kast spectral detection of narrow H$��$ and He II emission lines ($v \approx 500$ km/s) originating from pre-existent circumstellar material. We attribute this phenomenology to radiation from shock interaction with extended, dense material surrounding the progenitor star at $r, 51 pages, 27 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

The fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope Source Catalog (4FGL) lists over 5000 gamma-ray sources with statistical significance above 4$\sigma$. About 23% of the sources listed in this catalog are unidentified/unassociated gamma-ray sources while ~26% of the sources are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), lacking optical spectroscopic information. To probe the blazar nature of candidate counterparts of UGSs and BCUs, we started our optical spectroscopic follow up campaign in 2012, which up to date account for more than 350 observed sources. In this paper, the tenth of our campaign, we report on the spectroscopic observations of 37 sources, mostly BCUs, whose observations were carried out predominantly at the Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional San Pedro M\'artir and the Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory between August 2018 and September 2019. We confirm the BL Lac nature of 27 sources and the flat spectrum radio quasar nature of three sources. The remaining ones are classified as six BL Lacs galaxy-dominated and one normal galaxy. We were also able to measure the redshifts for 20 sources, including 10 BL Lacs. Automated classification of supernovae (SNe) based on optical photometric light curve information is essential in the upcoming era of wide-field time domain surveys, such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) conducted by the Rubin Observatory. Photometric classification can enable real-time identification of interesting events for extended multi-wavelength follow-up, as well as archival population studies. Here we present the complete sample of 5,243 "SN-like" light curves (in griz) from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey (PS1-MDS). The PS1-MDS is similar to the planned LSST Wide-Fast-Deep survey in terms of cadence, filters and depth, making this a useful training set for the community. Using this dataset, we train a novel semi-supervised machine learning algorithm to photometrically classify 2,315 new SN-like light curves with host galaxy spectroscopic redshifts. Our algorithm consists of a random forest supervised classification step and a novel unsupervised step in which we introduce a recurrent autoencoder neural network (RAENN). Our final pipeline, dubbed SuperRAENN, has an accuracy of 87% across five SN classes (Type Ia, Ibc, II, IIn, SLSN-I). We find the highest accuracy rates for Type Ia SNe and SLSNe and the lowest for Type Ibc SNe. Our complete spectroscopically- and photometrically-classified samples break down into: 62.0% Type Ia (1839 objects), 19.8% Type II (553 objects), 4.8% Type IIn (136 objects), 11.7% Type Ibc (291 objects), and 1.6% Type I SLSNe (54 objects). A significant fraction of all $\gamma$-ray sources detected by the Large Area Telescope aboard the \fer\ satellite is still lacking a low-energy counterpart. In addition, there is still a large population of $\gamma$-ray sources with associated low-energy counterparts that lack firm classifications. In the last 10 years we have undertaken an optical spectroscopic campaign to address the problem of unassociated/unidentified $\gamma$-ray sources (UGSs), mainly devoted to observing blazars and blazar candidates because they are the largest population of $\gamma$-ray sources associated to date. Here we describe the overall impact of our optical spectroscopic campaign on sources associated in \fer-LAT catalogs, coupled with objects found in the literature. In the literature search, we kept track of efforts by different teams that presented optical spectra of counterparts or potential counterparts of \fer-LAT catalog sources. Our summary includes an analysis of an additional 30 newly-collected optical spectra of counterparts or potential counterparts of \fer-LAT sources of previously unknown nature.New spectra were acquired at the Blanco 4-m and OAN-SPM 2.1-m telescopes, and those available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (data release 15) archive. All new sources with optical spectra analyzed here are classified as blazars. Thanks to our campaign, we altogether discovered and classified 394 targets with an additional 123 objects collected from a literature search. We began our optical spectroscopic campaign between the release of the second and third \fer-LAT source catalogs (2FGL and 3FGL, respectively), and classified about 25\% of the sources with uncertain nature and discovered a blazar-like potential counterpart for $\sim$10\% of UGSs listed therein. In the 4FGL catalog, about 350 \fer-LAT sources are classified to date thanks to our campaign. Here we present a catalog of 12,993 photometrically-classified supernova-like light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility, along with candidate host galaxy associations. By training a random forest classifier on spectroscopically classified supernovae from the Bright Transient Survey, we achieve an accuracy of 80% across four supernova classes resulting in a final data set of 8208 Type Ia, 2080 Type II, 1985 Type Ib/c, and 720 SLSN. We report on VLBI measurements of supernova 2014C at several epochs between $t = 384$ and 1057 days after the explosion. SN 2014C was an unusual supernova that initially had Type Ib optical spectrum, but after $t = 130$ d it developed a Type IIn spectrum with prominent H$\alpha$ lines, suggesting the onset of strong circumstellar interaction. Our first VLBI observation was at $t = 384$ d, and we find that the outer radius of SN 2014C was $(6.40 \pm 0.26) \times 10^{16}$ cm (for a distance of 15.1 Mpc), implying an average expansion velocity of $19300 \pm 790$ \kms\ up to that time. At our last epoch, SN 2014C was moderately resolved and shows an approximately circular outline but with an enhancement of the brightness on the W side. The outer radius of the radio emission at $t = 1057$ d is $(14.9 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{16}$ cm. We find that the expansion between $t = 384$ and 1057 d is well described by a constant velocity expansion with $v = 13600 \pm 650$ \kms. SN 2014C had clearly been substantially decelerated by $t = 384$ d. Our measurements are compatible with a scenario where the expanding shock impacted upon a shell of dense circumstellar material during the first year, as suggested by the observations at other wavelengths, but had progressed through the dense shell by the time of the VLBI observations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS. Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) with angular dimensions greater than a few degrees are relatively rare, as are remnants located more than ten degrees off the Galactic plane. Here we report a UV and optical investigation of two previously suspected SNRs more than ten degrees in both angular diameter and Galactic latitude. One is a proposed remnant discovered in 2008 through 1420 MHz polarization maps near Galactic coordinates $l$ = 353, $b$ = $-$34. GALEX far UV (FUV) and H$\alpha$ emission mosaics show the object's radio emission coincident with a 11 x 14 degree shell of UV filaments surrounding a diffuse H$\alpha$ emission ring. Another proposed high latitude SNR is the 20 x 26 degree Antlia nebula (G275.5+18.4) discovered in 2002 through low-resolution all-sky H$\alpha$ and ROSAT soft X-ray emissions. GALEX UV and H$\alpha$ mosaics along with optical spectra indicate the presence of shocks throughout the Antlia nebula with estimated shock velocities of 70 to over 100 km s$^{-1}$. We also present evidence that it has collided with the northeast rim of the Gum Nebula. We find both of these nebulae are bona fide SNRs with ages less than 10$^{5}$ yr despite their unusually large angular dimensions. We also present FUV and optical images along with optical spectra of a new high-latitude SNR (G249.7+24.7) some 4.5 degrees in diameter which has also been independently discovered in X-rays and radio (Becker at al. 2021). However, identifying their progenitors has remained an outstanding open question in astrophysics. Studies of SN host galaxies have proven to be powerful in providing constraints on the progenitor populations. In this paper, we present all CCSNe detected between 2009 and 2017 by the Palomar Transient Factory. This sample includes 888 SNe of 12 distinct classes out to redshift z ≈ 1. We present the photometric properties of their host galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to the mid-infrared and model the host-galaxy spectral energy distributions to derive physical properties. The galaxy mass function of Type Ic, Ib, IIb, II, and IIn SNe ranges from 105 to 1011.5 M o˙, probing the entire mass range of star-forming galaxies down to the least-massive star-forming galaxies known. Moreover, the galaxy mass distributions are consistent with models of star-formation-weighted mass functions. Regular CCSNe are hence direct tracers of star formation. Small but notable differences exist between some of the SN classes. Type Ib/c SNe prefer galaxies with slightly higher masses (i.e., higher metallicities) and star formation rates than Type IIb and II SNe. These differences are less pronounced than previously thought. H-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and SNe Ic-BL are scarce in galaxies above 1010 M o˙. Their progenitors require environments with metallicities of l 0.4 and l 1 solar, respectively. In addition, the hosts of H-poor SLSNe are dominated by a younger stellar population than all other classes of CCSNe. Our findings corroborate the notion that low metallicity and young age play an important role in the formation of SLSN progenitors.

We present the results of an extensive observational campaign on the nearby Type Ibn SN 2015G, including data from radio through ultraviolet wavelengths. SN 2015G was asymmetric, showing late-time nebular lines redshifted by ~1000 km/s. It shared many features with the prototypical SN In 2006jc, including extremely strong He I emssion lines and a late-time blue pseudocontinuum. The young SN 2015G showed narrow P-Cygni profiles of He I, but never in its evolution did it show any signature of hydrogen - arguing for a dense, ionized, and hydrogen-free circumstellar medium moving outward with a velocity of ~1000 km/s and created by relatively recent mass loss from the progenitor star. Ultraviolet through infrared observations show that the fading SN 2015G (which was probably discovered some 20 days post-peak) had a spectral energy distribution that was well described by a simple, single-component blackbody. Archival HST images provide upper limits on the luminosity of SN 2015G's progenitor, while nondetections of any luminous radio afterglow and optical nondetections of outbursts over the past two decades provide constraints upon its mass-loss history., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures. Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are absorption features commonly observed in optical/near-infrared spectra of stars and thought to be associated with polyatomic molecules that comprise a significant reservoir of organic material in the universe. However, the central wavelengths of almost all DIBs do not correspond with electronic transitions of known atomic or molecular species and the specific physical nature of their carriers remains inconclusive despite decades of observational, theoretical, and experimental research. It is well established that DIB carriers are located in the interstellar medium, but the recent discovery of time-varying DIBs in the spectra of the extragalactic supernova SN2012ap suggests that some may be created in massive star environments. Here we report evidence of short time-scale (10-60 d) changes in DIB absorption line substructure toward 3 of 17 massive stars observed as part of a pathfinder survey of variable DIBs conducted with the 1.5-m Tillinghast telescope and Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) at Fred L. Whipple Observatory. The detections are made in high-resolution optical spectra (R = 44000) having signal-to-noise ratios of 5-15 around the 5797 and 6614 angstrom features, and are considered significant but requiring further investigation. We find that these changes are potentially consistent with interactions between stellar winds and DIB carriers in close proximity. Nearly one-third of the sources in the $Fermi$-LAT catalogs lack a lower energy counterpart, hence being referred as unidentified/unassociated gamma-ray sources (UGSs). In order to firmly classify them, dedicated multifrequency follow-up campaigns are necessary. These will permit to unveil their nature and identify the fraction that could belong to the class of active galaxies known as blazars that is the largest population of extragalactic $\gamma$-ray sources. In $Fermi$-LAT catalogs there are also gamma-ray sources associated with multifrequency blazar-like objects known as Blazars Candidates of Uncertain type (i.e., BCUs) for which follow up spectroscopic campaigns are mandatory to confirm their blazar nature. Thus, in 2013 we started an optical spectroscopic campaign to identify blazar-like objects potential counterparts of UGSs and BCUs. Here we report the spectra of 31 additional targets observed as part of our follow up campaign. Thirteen of them are BCUs for which we acquired spectroscopic observations at Observatorio Astrof\'isico Guillermo Haro (OAGH) and at Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory (SOAR) telescopes, while the rest has been identified thanks to the archival observations available from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We confirm the blazar nature of all BCUs: three of them are in blazar of quasar type (BZQs) while the remaining ones can be spectroscopically classified as BL Lac objects (BZBs). Then we also discovered 18 BL Lac objects lying within the positional uncertainty regions of UGSs that could be their potential counterparts., Comment: 30 pages and 65 figures

We present the discovery and high-cadence follow-up observations of SN 2018ivc, an unusual Type II supernova that exploded in NGC 1068 (D=10.1 Mpc). The light curve of SN 2018ivc declines piecewise-linearly, changing slope frequently, with four clear slope changes in the first 30 days of evolution. This rapidly changing light curve indicates that interaction between the circumstellar material and ejecta plays a significant role in the evolution. Circumstellar interaction is further supported by a strong X-ray detection. The spectra are rapidly evolving and dominated by hydrogen, helium, and calcium emission lines. We identify a rare high-velocity emission-line feature blueshifted at ~7800 km/s (in Ha, Hb, Pb, Pg, HeI, CaII), which is visible from day 18 until at least day 78 and could be evidence of an asymmetric progenitor or explosion. From the overall similarity between SN 2018ivc and SN 1996al, the \Ha{} equivalent width of its parent HII region, and constraints from pre-explosion archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we find that the progenitor of SN 2018ivc could be as massive as 52 Msun but is more likely, Accepted by ApJ. We present new proper motion measurements of optically emitting oxygen-rich knots of supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 (E0102), which are used to estimate the remnant's center of expansion and age. Four epochs of high resolution Hubble Space Telescope images spanning 19 yr were retrieved and analyzed. We found a robust center of expansion of alpha=1:04:02.48 and delta=-72:01:53.92 (J2000) with 1-sigma uncertainty of 1.77 arcseconds using 45 knots from images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys using the F475W filter in 2003 and 2013 having the highest signal-to-noise ratio. We also estimate an upper limit explosion age of 1738 +/- 175 yr by selecting knots with the highest proper motions, that are assumed to be the least decelerated. We find evidence of an asymmetry in the proper motions of the knots as a function of position angle. We conclude that these asymmetries were most likely caused by interaction between E0102's original supernova blast wave and an inhomogeneous surrounding environment, as opposed to intrinsic explosion asymmetry. The observed non-homologous expansion suggests that the use of a free expansion model inaccurately offsets the center of expansion and leads to an overestimated explosion age.
