The effects of rhizosphere microorganisms on plant growth and the associated mechanisms are a focus of current research, but the effects of exogenous combined inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on seedling growth and the associated rhizosphere microecological mechanisms have been little reported. In this study, a greenhouse pot experiment was used to study the effects of single or double inoculation with AM fungi (Funneliformis mosseae) and two PGPR (Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp.) on the growth of tobacco seedlings, together with high-throughput sequencing technology to reveal associated rhizosphere microecological mechanisms. All inoculation treatments significantly increased the aboveground dry weight; root dry weight; seedling nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium uptake; plant height; stem thickness; maximum leaf area; chlorophyll content; total root length, surface area, and volume; and average root diameter. The highest values for these indices were observed in the combined treatment of F. mosseae and Pseudomonas sp. SG29 (A_SG29). Furthermore, the A_SG29 treatment yielded the highest diversity indexes and largest percentages of significantly enriched bacterial taxa, and significantly promoted the colonization of AMF in tobacco roots and Pseudomonas in rhizosphere soil. Differential metabolic-pathway predictions using PICRUSt2 showed that the A_SG29 treatment significantly increased the metabolic pathway richness of tobacco rhizosphere microorganisms, and significantly up-regulated some metabolic pathways that may benefit plant growth. Co-inoculation with F. mosseae and Pseudomonas sp. SG29 promoted tobacco-seedling growth by significantly improving rhizosphere microbial communities' structure and function. In summary, the combined inoculation of AMF and SG29 promotes tobacco seedling growth, optimizes the rhizosphere microbial community's structure and function, and serves as a sustainable microbial co-cultivation method for tobacco seedling production.

Sympatric species inhabiting similar ecological niches can coexist by partitioning aspects of available ecological resources, such as temporal, spatial, and nutritional niches. Ungulates often coexist in the same habitat, resulting in temporal partitioning and divergence in foraging strategies and spatial utilization. To understand the temporal patterns of ecological differentiation and coexistence mechanisms among sympatric ungulates, we analyzed the monitoring data in Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve, Guizhou, China, from 2017 to 2022. Kernel density estimation was used to scrutinize disparities in diurnal activity patterns among four ungulates [tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus), Reeves' muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and mainland serow (Capricornis milneedwardsii)] as well as the interspecies variances during different seasons, at diverse altitudes, and between breeding and non-breeding periods. Daily activity patterns differed significantly among four species, with those of tufted deer, Reeves' muntjac, and wild boar affected significantly by season and breeding cycle. In addition, the daily activity rhythms of four species were affected by altitude. Thus, the daily activity rhythms of these ungulates were resulted from a combination of environmental factors and interspecific competitive interactions, as well as the reproductive cycle of each species. Our results provided a scientific reference for the effective management of wildlife and forest ecosystems, and we suggest that knowledge of temporal dynamics should be integrated into conservation planning for these sympatric species.

Abstract Sarcina ventriculi is a bacterium with a specific histological morphology and infection can present with symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and occasionally fatal complications. Delayed gastric emptying is regarded as the most significant risk factor for infection. Its pathogenicity is currently unknown and treatment options are inconsistent. Here we report a case of gastric bezoars secondary to a mixed infection of Sarcina ventriculi and G + bacilli, which is diagnosed by a pathological biopsy.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the independent or synergistic effects of evening chronotype and poor sleep quality on cognitive impairment in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on 249 individuals diagnosed with MDD, recruited from the Mental Health Center of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. Chronotype preference was assessed using the reduced Horne and Ostberg Morningness - Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ), while sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Cognitive function was evaluated through the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), defining impairment as a DSST score ≤ 56 (the lowest quartile of the cohort). Univariate analysis and logistic regression models were employed to explore the factors associated with cognitive impairment, focusing on the potential interactive effects of evening chronotype and poor sleep quality.ResultsOf the 249 subjects recruited, about 41% were classified as evening chronotype. These individuals exhibited poorer sleep quality and more severe depressive symptoms compared to non-evening chronotype (p < 0.01). Univariate analysis revealed that first episode status, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) scores, evening chronotype, and poor sleep quality were significantly associated with cognitive impairment (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis further demonstrated that the co-existence of evening chronotype and poor sleep quality significantly increased the likelihood of cognitive impairment (adjusted odds ratio [AdjOR] = 2.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.09–6.45, p < 0.05).ConclusionOur findings suggest that evening chronotype, poor sleep quality, and their interaction are important contributors to cognitive impairment in patients with MDD, alongside the severity of depression and first episode status. These results emphasize the need for integrated approaches targeting circadian rhythm disruptions and sleep disturbances in the treatment of cognitive dysfunction in MDD.

The abundance and biological contribution of natural killer (NK) cells in cancer are controversial. Here, we aim to uncover clinical relevance and cellular roles of NK cells in colon cancer liver metastasis (CCLM). Here, we integrated single-cell RNA-sequencing, spatial transcriptomics (ST), and bulk RNA-sequencing datasets to investigate NK cells’ biological properties and functions in the microenvironment of primary and liver metastatic tumors. Results were validated through an in vitro co-culture experiment based on bioinformatics analysis. Useing single-cell RNA-sequencing and ST, we mapped the immune cellular landscape of colon cancer and well-matched liver metastatic cancer. We discovered that GZMK+ resting NK cells increased significantly in tumor tissues and were enriched in the tumor regions of both diseases. After combining bulk RNA and clinical data, we observed that these NK cell subsets contributed to a worse prognosis. Meanwhile, KIR2DL4+ activated NK cells exhibited the opposite position and relevance. Pseudotime cell trajectory analysis revealed the evolution of activated to resting NK cells. In vitro experiments further confirmed that tumor-cell-co-cultured NK cells exhibited a decidual-like status, as evidenced by remarkable increasing CD9 expression. Functional experiments finally revealed that NK cells exhibited tumor-activating characteristics by promoting the dissociation of SCF (stem cell factor) on the tumor cells membrane depending on cell-to-cell interaction, as the supernatant of the co-culture system enhanced tumor progression. In summary, our findings revealed resting NK cells exhibited a clinical relevance with CCLM, which may be exploited for novel strategies to improve therapeutic outcomes for patients with CCLM.

Background and aimsVonoprazan, a novel acid suppressant, has been employed in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease in recent years. However, the efficacy and safety of vonoprazan versus proton-pump inhibitors remains controversial. To address this gap, a systematic review and network meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of vonoprazan in comparison with various proton-pump inhibitors.MethodsRandomized controlled trials that met selection criteria in PubMed (Medline), EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched up to July 15, 2024. The primary outcome was ulcer healing rate. Secondary outcomes were treatment-emergent adverse events and drug-related adverse events. Effect size on outcomes is presented as odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.ResultsThirty-five randomized controlled trials containing 9,544 participants were included. In terms of the healing rate at 2 weeks, lansoprazole 30 mg ranked first, followed by vonoprazan 20 mg and ilaprazole 10 mg. In terms of the healing rate at 4 weeks, pantoprazole 40 mg ranked first, with rabeprazole 10 mg and lansoprazole 30 mg ranking second and third, respectively. Regarding the healing rate at 8 weeks, lansoprazole 30 mg is demonstrated to be the most efficacious regimen. Moreover, subgroup analysis indicated that lansoprazole 30 mg is the optimal regimen in the treatment of artificial gastric ulcer at 4 and 8 weeks. Importantly, lansoprazole 30 mg has fewer adverse reactions and higher safety.ConclusionThe optimal regimen for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease may be lansoprazole 30 mg at 2 and 8 weeks, while pantoprazole 40 mg has demonstrated superior performance at the 4-week when compared to vonoprazan 20 mg. Furthermore, lansoprazole 30 mg has shown to be superior in terms of safety outcomes. These findings, derived from a network meta-analysis, necessitate further research for validation.

Abstract Background A growing body of research suggests that heat shock proteins (HSPs) may serve as diagnostic biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but their results are still controversial. This meta-analysis endeavors to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of HSPs both independently and in conjunction with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) as novel biomarkers for HCC detection. Methods Pooled statistical indices, including sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), and negative likelihood ratio (NLR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), were computed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of HSPs, AFP, and their combinations. Additionally, the area under the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve (AUC) was determined. Results A total of 2013 HCC patients and 1031 control subjects from nine studies were included in this meta-analysis. The summary estimates for HSPs and AFP are as follows: sensitivity of 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69–0.85) compared to 0.73 (95% CI: 0.65–0.80); specificity of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.81–0.95) compared to 0.86 (95% CI: 0.77–0.91); PLR of 7.4 (95% CI: 3.7–14.9) compared to 5.1 (95% CI: 3.3–8.1); NLR of 0.24 (95% CI: 0.16–0.37) compared to 0.31 (95% CI: 0.24–0.41); DOR of 30.19 (95% CI: 10.68–85.37) compared to 16.34 (95% CI: 9.69–27.56); and AUC of 0.90 (95% CI: 0.87–0.92) compared to 0.85 (95% CI: 0.82–0.88). The pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, DOR and AUC were 0.90 (95% CI: 0.82–0.95), 0.94 (95% CI: 0.82–0.98), 14.5 (95% CI: 4.6–45.4), 0.11 (95% CI: 0.06–0.20), 133.34 (95% CI: 29.65–599.61), and 0.96 (95% CI: 0.94–0.98) for the combination of HSPs and AFP. Conclusion Our analysis suggests that HSPs have potential as a biomarker for clinical use in the diagnosis of HCC, and the concurrent utilization of HSPs and AFP shows notable diagnostic effectiveness for HCC.

IntroductionNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) poses a significant global health challenge, necessitating comprehensive exploration of its etiology. This study investigates the intricate relationship between body composition and NAFLD prevalence, focusing on the balance between muscle mass and fat content.MethodsEmploying a retrospective cross-sectional design, 2,493 participants undergoing routine health examinations were analyzed. Body compositions, including muscle mass and fat, were measured using bioelectrical-impedance analysis. The prevalence of NAFLD was assessed based on clinical guidelines.ResultsThis study included 2,493 patients, including 1,601 (64.2%) men and 892(35.8%) women. The average age of these participants was 46.0 ± 13.1 years, with a mean body mass index of 25.0 ± 3.6 kg/m2. The effects of irradiation on pork quality characteristics were investigated by combining sensory experiments, pork color, TBARS, volatile components, and differential metabolites. Pork irradiated at a dose of 1 kGy received the highest sensory scores, whereas pork irradiated at doses of 3 and 5 kGy obtained lower sensory scores, particularly with regard to odor. Irradiation makes pork more ruddy and promotes fat oxidation, leading to increased a* and TBARS values. The main volatile substances in irradiated pork were hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and alcohols, and hexanal, heptanal, and valeric acid were considered as important substances responsible for the generation of radiation-induced off-flavors. 65 differential metabolites were identified. l-pyroglutamic acid, l-glutamate, l-proline, fumarate acids, betaine, and l-anserine were considered as the main substances contributing to the differences in pork quality. In addition, metabolic pathways such as arginine biosynthesis, alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism were found to be considerably affected by irradiation.

FH-deficient Renal Cell Carcinoma (FH-deficient RCC) are inherited tumors caused by mutations in the fumarate hydratase (FH) gene, which plays a role in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. These mutations often result in aggressive forms of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and other tumors. Here, we present a case of FH-deficient RCC in a 43-year-old woman with a history of uterine fibroids. She exhibited a new heterozygous mutation in exon six of the FH gene (c.799_803del, c.781_796del). The patient had multiple bone metastases and small subcutaneous nodules in various areas such as the shoulders, back, and buttocks. Biopsy of a subcutaneous nodule on the right side revealed positive expression of 2-succinate-cysteine (2SC), and FH staining indicated FH expression deletion. The patient underwent treatment with a combination of erlotinib and bevacizumab, which resulted in significant efficacy with moderate side effects. This treatment combination may be recommended as a standard regimen. This case underscores the importance of genetic testing in patients with advanced renal cancer to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Furthermore, it provides insights into potential treatment approaches for FH-deficient RCC.

Due to environmental friendliness, small size, long lifetime, and adjustable light-emitting wavelength, AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV-LEDs) have great development potential in the fields of biochemical detection, sterilization and disinfection, and non-line-of-sight communication. After decades of research, AlGaN-based DUV-LEDs have significantly improved in the direction of luminous efficiency. However, the luminous efficiency of the present AlGaN-based DUV-LEDs is still at a low level compared with that of the fully commercialised nitride blue LEDs, making it difficult to meet the market demand. This paper first introduces the present development status of AlGaN-based DUV-LEDs and the reasons for the low luminous efficiency. Then from the preparation of AlGaN-based, AlGaN doping and the design of AlGaN-based DUV-LEDs structure to elaborate the research progress in recent years in the direction of improving the luminous efficiency of AlGaN-based DUV-LEDs. Finally discusses the challenges that the AlGaN-based DUV-LEDs are presently faced with, and their future opportunities for development.

To address the challenges of low detection rate and high missed detection rate of military aircraft in current complex remote sensing data, and to meet the requirements of real-time detection and easy deployment of models, this article introduces DET-you only look once (YOLO), an innovative detection model. First, to tackle the issue of reduced accuracy in identifying small targets amidst intricate backgrounds, a novel feature extraction component, C2f_DEF, was devised. This module replaced all existing C2f components within YOLOv8n, thereby significantly enhancing the model's ability to cope with complicated environmental contexts. Second, to achieve the functionality of easy deployment of the model, some deep structures were simplified to make the model more lightweight. Afterward, to further improve the model's ability to handle complex backgrounds and dense environments in remote sensing images and to improve the model's detection accuracy for military aircraft, the DAT module was embedded in the model. Finally, this article also optimized the loss function and reg_max to further reduce computational costs while improving the detection accuracy of the model. To verify the effectiveness and strong universality of DET-YOLO, extensive experimental verification was conducted on three publicly available datasets, namely MAR20, NWPU VHR-10, and NEU-DET. On the MAR20 dataset, compared with other advanced models, DET-YOLO achieved the highest mAP0.5 (namely 94.7%) with only 80 training epochs while meeting lightweight and real-time requirements. While on the other two datasets, DET-YOLO also achieved the best detection performance.

Abstract Automated mental retardation (MR) assessment is potential for improving the diagnostic efficiency and objectivity in clinical practice. Based on the researches on abnormal behavior characteristics of patients with MR, we propose an extension and supplement shift multi-scale G3D (ESS MS-G3D) network for video-based assessment of MR. Specifically, all videos are collected from clinical diagnostic scenarios and the skeleton sequence of human body is extracted from videos through an advanced pose estimation model. To solve the shortcomings of existing behavior characteristic learning methods, we present: (1) three G3D styles, enable the network to have different input forms; (2) two G3D graphs and two extension graphs, redefine and extend the graph structure of spatial–temporal nodes; (3) two learnable parameters, realize adaptive adjustment of graph structure; (4) a shift layer, enable the network to learn global features. Finally, we construct a three-branch model ESS MS-STGC, which can capture the discriminative spatial–temporal features and explore the co-occurrence relationship between spatial and temporal domains. Experiments in clinical video data set show that our proposed model has good performance in MR assessment and is superior to the existing vision-based methods. In two-classification task, our model with joint stream achieves the highest accuracy of $$94.63\%$$ 94.63 % in validation set and $$89.13\%$$ 89.13 % in test set. The results are further improved to $$96.52\%$$ 96.52 % and $$93.22\%$$ 93.22 % , respectively, by utilizing multi-stream fusion strategy. In four-classification task, our model obtains Top1 accuracy of $$78.84\%$$ 78.84 % and Top2 accuracy of $$91.34\%$$ 91.34 % in test set. The proposed method provides a new idea for clinical mental retardation assessment.

Gestational stress can exacerbate postpartum depression (PPD), for which treatment options remain limited. Environmental enrichment (EE) may be a therapeutic intervention for neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, but the specific mechanisms by which EE might impact PPD remain unknown. Here we examined the behavioral, molecular, and cellular impact of EE in a stable PPD model in rats developed through maternal separation (MS). Maternal rats subjected to MS developed depression-like behavior and cognitive dysfunction together with evidence of significant neuroinflammation including microglia activation, neuronal apoptosis, and impaired synaptic plasticity. Expanding the duration of EE to throughout pregnancy and lactation, we observed an EE-associated reversal of MS-induced depressive phenotypes, inhibition of neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis, and improvement in synaptic plasticity in maternal rats. Thus, EE effectively alleviates neuroinflammation, neuronal apoptosis, damage to synaptic plasticity, and consequent depression-like behavior in mother rats experiencing MS-induced PPD, paving the way for new preventive and therapeutic strategies for PPD.

To enhance the performance of visual SLAM in underwater environments, this paper presents an enhanced front-end method based on visual feature enhancement. The method comprises three modules aimed at optimizing and improving the matching capability of visual features from different perspectives. Firstly, to address issues related to insufficient underwater illumination and uneven distribution of artificial light sources, a brightness-consistency recovery method is proposed. This method employs an adaptive histogram equalization algorithm to balance the brightness of images. Secondly, a method for denoising underwater suspended particulates is introduced to filter out noise from images. After image-level processing, a combined underwater acousto–optic feature-association method is proposed, which associates acoustic features from sonar with visual features, thereby providing distance information for visual features. Finally, utilizing the AFRL dataset, the improved system incorporating the proposed enhancement methods is evaluated for its performance against the OKVIS framework. The system achieves a better trajectory estimation accuracy compared to OKVIS and demonstrates robustness in underwater environments.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) can be used to detect differences in perfusion for multiple brain regions thought to be important in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the potential of cerebral blood flow (CBF) to predict MDD and its correlations between the blood lipid levels and immune markers, which are closely related to MDD and brain function change, remain unclear. The 451 individuals − 298 with MDD and 133 healthy controls who underwent MRI at a single time point with arterial spin labelling and a high resolution T1-weighted structural scan. A proportion of MDD also provided blood samples for analysis of lipid and immune markers. We performed CBF case-control comparisons, random forest model construction, and exploratory correlation analyses. Moreover, we investigated the relationship between gray matter volume (GMV), blood lipids, and the immune system within the same sample to assess the differences in CBF and GMV. Abstract Transgenic soybean is one of the most planted crops for human food and animal feed. The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is an important aquatic organism cultured worldwide. In this study, the effect of six different soybean diets containing: two transgenic soybeans expressing different types of cp4-epsps, Vip3Aa and pat genes (DBN9004 and DBN8002), their non-transgenic parent JACK, and three conventional soybean varieties (Dongsheng3, Dongsheng7, and Dongsheng9) was investigated in juvenile channel catfish for eight weeks, and a safety assessment was performed. During the experiment, no difference in survival rate was observed in six groups. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and condition factor (CF) showed no significant difference. Moreover, comparable feed conversion (FC), feeding rate (FR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were found between transgenic soybean and JACK groups. Assessment of growth performance showed that the weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) of channel catfish were consistent. In addition, there were no changes in enzyme activity indexes (lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT)) in channel catfish among treatments. The research provided an experimental basis for the aquaculture feed industry to employ transgenic soybean DBN9004 and DBN8002 for commercial purposes.

Abstract Cancer heterogeneity has posed a great challenge to traditional cancer treatment, with the reappearance of cancer heterogeneity of inter and intra patients being especially critical. Based on this, personalized therapy has emerged as significant research focus in recent and even future years. Cancer-related therapeutic models are developing, including cell lines, patient-derived xenografts, organoids, etc. Organoids are three-dimensional in vitro models emerged in the past dozen years and are able to reproduce the cellular and molecular composition of the original tumor. These advantages demonstrate the great potential for patient-derived organoids to develop personalized anticancer therapies, including preclinical drug screening and the prediction of patient treatment response. The impact of microenvironment on cancer treatment cannot be underestimated, and the remodeling of microenvironment also allows organoids to interact with other technologies, among which organs-on-chips is a representative one. This review highlights the use of organoids and organs-on-chips as complementary reference tools in treating colorectal cancer from the perspective of clinical efficacy predictability. We also discuss the limitations of both techniques and how they complement each other well.

Due to the uncertain, diverse, and light-attenuating characteristics of the underwater environment, underwater images have low contrast and unclear problems. This paper proposes a histogram equalization algorithm based on optimized adaptive image quadruple segmentation and cropping (AQSCHE). Compared with the traditional histogram equalization underwater image enhancement algorithm, this algorithm introduces histogram quadruple segmentation and cropping technology. Using the exposure value and segmentation point calculation formula that optimizes the distribution range of the histogram, perform quadruple segmentation on the image to obtain a more refined histogram. The adaptive histogram clipping is realized by constructing the clipping parameter z to adjust the contrast and brightness of the image. The original image is enhanced by double equalization of the sub-histogram and the histogram of each channel. Finally, the simulation experiments verify the enhancement effect of the proposed algorithm AQSCHE on underwater images. The processed underwater image has higher contrast, is clearer and more natural in subjective evaluation, and has a better visual effect; in the image objective evaluation indicators, information entropy (Entropy), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM) and universal color image quality evaluator (UCIQE), this algorithm also outperforms other common algorithms such as HE and CLAHE.

Microplastics (MPs) and the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) have attracted global attention for their toxicological interactions in aquatic organisms. The purpose of this investigation was evaluating the effect of MPs (1 mg L−1) and Cd (5 mg L−1) on the liver function, immune response of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) after 96 h exposure, and intestinal microbiota after 21 days, respectively. Co-exposure to MPs and Cd significantly enhanced MP accumulation in the liver of the crucian carp compared to the accumulation with exposure to MPs alone. Co-exposure to MPs and Cd triggered notable histopathological alterations accompanied by increased hepatic cell necrosis and inflammation, and was associated with higher aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels, lower superoxide dismutase and catalase activity levels, but higher malondialdehyde content and total antioxidant capacity in the liver. Moreover, the combined treatment of MPs and Cd led to the up-regulated transcription of genes related to immune response, such as interleukin 8 (il-8), il-10, il-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and heat shock protein 70, both in the liver and spleen. Co-exposure to MPs and Cd reduced the variety and abundance of the intestinal microbiota in the crucian carp. Our research indicates that the combined exposure to MPs and Cd may exert synergistic toxic effects on crucian carp, which could impede the sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry and pose potential risks to food safety.

BackgroundOverexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) has been observed in a wide range of human tumors, and there is an increasing evidence demonstrated that HSPs play a key role in tumor progression. Several studies were conducted to explore the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic value of HSPs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the results remain controversial. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis.MethodsThe eligible literature was obtained from PubMed, Cochrane library, Web of science, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wan Fang databases. We used the odds ratio (OR) and hazard ratio (HR) as the suitable parameters to assess the clinicopathological features and prognostic value of HSPs in HCC patients.ResultsThe meta-analysis results showed that HSPs expression was associated with overall survival (OS) of HCC patients (HR = 1.61, 95%CI = 1.22-2.13, P=0.001, I2 = 62.7%). In addition, the pooled results suggested that HSPs expression was significantly correlated with tumor differentiation (OR = 1.33, 95%CI = 1.08-1.65, P = 0.907), vascular invasion (OR = 1.31, 95%CI = 1.02-1.69, P = 0.921) and lymphatic metastasis (OR=1.98, 95%CI= 1.70-2.31, P = 0.740). Meanwhile, the subgroup analysis showed a significant correlation between the expression of HSP27 (HR=1.69, 95%CI = 1.24-2.31, P = 0.674) and HSP90α (HR=2.03, 95%CI = 1.73-2.40, P = 0.743) with OS of HCC patients.ConclusionsOur meta-analysis confirms that HSPs expression is closely associated with a worse prognosis in HCC patients, and may be directly involved in tumor differentiation and distant metastasis. In addition, the subgroup analysis results demonstrate that the expression of HSP27 and HSP90α can be served as potential prognostic predictors of HCC.

Abstract With the development of artificial intelligence, path planning of Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) has been a research hotspot in recent years. This paper proposes the improved A* algorithm combined with the greedy algorithm for a multi-objective path planning strategy. Firstly, the evaluation function is improved to make the convergence of A* algorithm faster. Secondly, the unnecessary nodes of the A* algorithm are removed, meanwhile only the necessary inflection points are retained for path planning. Thirdly, the improved A* algorithm combined with the greedy algorithm is applied to multi-objective point planning. Finally, path planning is performed for five target nodes in a warehouse environment to compare path lengths, turn angles and other parameters. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is smoother and the path length is reduced by about 5%. The results show that the proposed method can reduce a certain path length.

Abstract Background Some significant differences exist between the outcomes of left‐ and right‐sided colon cancer patients. The presence of nodal metastases is a critical prognostic factor, especially in the absence of distant metastasis. Our research studied the lymph nodes status of left‐ and right‐sided colon cancer patients to determine the influence of this factor on prognosis. Methods Our data were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. We used the chi‐square test to analyze the clinicopathological characteristics. The X‐tile program was adopted to acquire optimal cutoff points of lymph node index. Kaplan–Meier curves were used to analyze prognosis and multivariate Cox regression models were performed to identify the independent factors associated with survival. Nomograms were built to predict the overall survival of patients, Harrell's C‐index and calibration plots were used to validate the nomograms. Results The study included 189,941 patients with colon cancer without metastasis (left 69,885, right 120,056) between 2004 and 2015. There are more patients with adequate examined lymph nodes in right‐sided. Lymph node status in patients with right colon cancer has a more significant impact on the risk of death. LODDS (C‐index: 0.583; AIC: 6875.4) was used to assess lymph node status. The nomograms showed that lymph node status was the main factor to predict the outcome in right‐sided colon patients. Conclusions The influence of lymph node status on predicting prognosis is significantly different between patients with left and right colon cancer without metastasis. The tumor site needs to be considered when lymph node status is used to assess the outcome of patients.

In this paper, we propose a robust and integrated visual odometry framework exploiting the optical flow and feature point method that achieves faster pose estimate and considerable accuracy and robustness during the odometry process. Our method utilizes optical flow tracking to accelerate the feature point matching process. In the odometry, two visual odometry methods are used: global feature point method and local feature point method. When there is good optical flow tracking and enough key points optical flow tracking matching is successful, the local feature point method utilizes prior information from the optical flow to estimate relative pose transformation information. In cases where there is poor optical flow tracking and only a small number of key points successfully match, the feature point method with a filtering mechanism is used for posing estimation. By coupling and correlating the two aforementioned methods, this visual odometry greatly accelerates the computation time for relative pose estimation. It reduces the computation time of relative pose estimation to 40% of that of the ORB_SLAM3 front-end odometry, while ensuring that it is not too different from the ORB_SLAM3 front-end odometry in terms of accuracy and robustness. The effectiveness of this method was validated and analyzed using the EUROC dataset within the ORB_SLAM3 open-source framework. The experimental results serve as supporting evidence for the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Depression and sleep disturbances are highly prevalent health problems that have been suggested to be associated with vitamin D deficiency. This study investigated whether sleep disturbances affect the association between vitamin D and depressive symptoms. A total of 425 patients with depression were included in this study. Spearman correlation coefficients were chosen to assess the relation between vitamin D concentrations and depressive symptomatology (according to the PHQ-9 and HAMD-17 scores). The GLM Mediation Model in the Medmod module for data analysis in Jamovi 2.2.5 was used to analyze the mediation models for sleep disturbances. Vitamin D concentrations were significantly correlated with PHQ-9 and HAMD-17 scale scores. In addition, item 3 was suggested to have a mediating effect between vitamin D and depressive symptoms in the mediating model of PHQ-9, and item 4 was suggested to have a mediating effect between vitamin D and depressive symptoms in the mediating model of HAMD-17. Sleep disturbances (especially difficulty falling asleep) are mediators between vitamin D and depressive symptoms, suggesting that increasing vitamin D levels at the right time to regulate sleep disturbances may improve depression symptoms, yet further research is necessary.

Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the aquatic environment has been reported to cause diseases in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). In addition, deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the primary mycotoxins found in aquaculture. However, the potential synergistic toxic effects of LPS and DON on crayfish are yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, crayfish were exposed to LPS (1 mg kg−1), DON (3 mg kg−1), and their combination (1 mg kg−1 LPS + 3 mg kg−1 DON, L+D) for a duration of six days. Co-exposure to LPS and DON exhibited the lowest survival rate compared to the control or individual treatments with LPS or DON alone. In the initial stage of the experiment, the combined treatment of LPS and DON showed a more pronounced up-regulation of antioxidant and immune-related enzymes in the sera compared to the other treatment groups, with a fold change ranging from 1.3 to 15. In addition, the (L+D) treatment group showed a down-regulation of immune-related genes, as well as Toll pathway-related genes in the hepatopancreas compared to LPS or DON. Moreover, the (L+D) treatment group demonstrated a 100% incidence of histopathological changes in the hepatopancreas, which were significantly more severe compared to the other three groups. In conclusion, our study provides physiological and histopathological evidence that the co-exposure to LPS and DON exerted synergistic toxic effects on crayfish. The observed effects could potentially hinder the development of the crayfish aquaculture industry in China.

Past studies have demonstrated the positive impact of step-graded $p$ -type AlxGa1−xN/GaN superlattice (SL) electron blocking layer (EBL) structures on the efficiency performance of ultraviolet (UV) GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the optimal Al-grading structure of these SL EBLs remains unclear owing to a lack of systematic investigation. The present work addresses this issue by applying EBL composed of alternating half-peak, single-peak, and double-peak $p$ -type AlxGa1−xN/GaN SL structures with varying values of $x$ ranging from 0.05 to 0.15 in 0.05 step increments. Simulation analysis is employed to obtain the internal quantum efficiency (IQE), energy band diagrams, polarization compensation factor, hole concentration, and electron concentration of GaN-based UV LEDs with three different SL-EBL structures. The results obtained at an injection current of 200 mA demonstrate that UV LEDs with double-peak SL-EBL structures provide the maximum IQE, which is ~38% greater than that of devices employing the conventional EBL in simulation experiment. This SL-EBL is demonstrated to improve the hole injection and electron overflow performance of GaN-based UV LEDs owing to the polarization charge and lattice mismatch at the p-AlxGa1−xN/GaN interfaces. The reduced Al composition on the p-GaN side reduces the potential barrier of hole injection. Moreover, the predicted increase in the IQE of GaN-based UV LEDs with the optimal SL-EBL is verified experimentally.

In order to completely evaluate ammonia emission from greenhouse vegetable fields, crop canopy absorption should not be neglected. The foliar uptake of NH3 applied at two growth stages and the subsequent 15N-labeled N translocation to other plant components were investigated under greenhouse conditions using chambers covered with the soil of a tomato field. Treatments comprised three NH3-N application rates (70, 140, and 210 mg/plot) using 15N-labeled ammonium sulfate. Plants were harvested immediately after exposure for 24 h, and the total N concentrations and 15N/14N ratios were determined. With increased NH3 concentration, total 15NH3-N absorption increased considerably, whereas the applied 15NH3-N uptake decreased gradually. The tomato plants absorbed 33–38% and 24–31% of the 15NH3-N generated at the anthesis and fruit growth stages, respectively. A total of 71–80% of the recovered NH3 was observed in the leaves and 20–30% of the recovered NH3 was remobilized to other components. Among them, an average of 10% of the absorbed 15NH3-N was transferred into the tomato fruits. All these results indicated the potential of the tested tomatoes for the foliar uptake of atmospheric 15NH3 and the distribution of 15N-labeled vegetative N among different plant components. The results are of great importance for the complete evaluation of nitrogen use efficiency in the greenhouse tomato fields.

Although previous studies have recognized the important role of patients' trust in promoting their intention to use health information technologies (HIT), most of those studies were under the “risk-benefit” theoretical framework. To deepen the understanding of patients' online consultation decisions, this paper develops a dual-path model investigating how patients develop trust beliefs toward online physicians from the perspective of communication. Drawing on media naturalness theory, we propose that HIT media naturalness will improve patients' perception of communication effort from online physicians and decrease communication ambiguity between patients and online physicians. This improved communication will further strengthen patients' trust in online physicians and promote their intention to use HIT. Based on a two-wave time-lagged survey from 361 participants, the empirical results demonstrated that the relationship between HIT media naturalness and patients' intention to use HIT is individually and serially mediated by two chains, including (1) perceived communication effort and patients' trust and (2) perceived communication ambiguity and patients' trust. We thus contribute to the related literature and provide practical implications.

Detecting small defects against a complex surface is highly challenging but crucial to ensure product quality in industry sectors. However, in the detection performance of existing methods, there remains a huge gap in the localization and segmentation of small defects with limited sizes and extremely weak feature representation. To address the above issue, this paper presents a weighted matrix decomposition model (WMD) for small defect detection against a complex surface. Firstly, a weighted matrix is constructed based on texture characteristics of RGB channels in the defect image, which aims to improve contrast between defects and the background. Based on the sparse and low-rank characteristics of small defects, the weighted matrix is then decomposed into low-rank and sparse matrices corresponding to the redundant background and defect areas, respectively. Finally, an automatic threshold segmentation method is used to obtain the optimal threshold and accurately segment the defect areas and their edges in the sparse matrix. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods under various quantitative evaluation metrics and has broad industrial application prospects.

Rail transit is a kind of rail transit based on fixed lines, which is carried out through special vehicles, passengers, and goods. However, urban rail transit construction activities are mostly underground activities, the construction environment and construction technology are complex, and the potential disaster risks are different. At present, the traditional 3D simulation technology is lack of interactive experience, but with the development of VR technology, 3D panorama technology, as a branch of VR technology, is rapidly popularized with its interactive and immersive characteristics. VR reality technology is applied in aerospace, real estate, education, entertainment, games, and other fields. Therefore, authors propose the application of VR panoramic technology based on the Unity3D engine and HTC Vive interactive equipment in the urban rail transit vehicle engineering simulation system. Furthermore, the content construction scheme and the overall development process of the simulation system are given. The function of VR technology in the simulation system and the main technology of real-time interaction for vehicle maintenance are discussed. The methods of literature analysis, expert interviews, on-site data acquisition, and questionnaire surveys are applied. By determining the intensity of protection measures, improving the construction quality of urban rail transit, preventing and controlling risks, and making the best plan and measures from a systematic point of view. From the final results of this study, user can gradually change the traditional ideas and methods of urban rail transit disaster prevention and mitigation and implement VR technology in the urban rail transit vehicle engineering simulation system, which plays a very important role in improving the safety management efficiency of urban rail transit construction.

In particular, the panorama technology in VR enables users to interact with the objects in the virtual environment in a natural way through the establishment of an artificial three-dimensional virtual environment. so as to get a good experience. Although VR technology has got some maturity, in response to the complex environment and increasing market demand, we put forward higher requirements for VR panorama technology. Panoramic mosaic technology has been studied for a long time at domestically and abroad.. Since the concept of image fusion was put forward, image fusion technology has been developed rapidly. However, the development of image mosaic technology still faces some problems to be studied and these problems were solved. Based on the existing research, present study proposes a VR panoramic image mosaic algorithm based on particle swarm optimization.. The proposed algorithm has the advantages of small computation time, fast splicing speed, high splicing quality, and high splicing confidence. This algorithm is based on particle swarm optimization, combined with the advantages of traditional mutual information algorithm, according to the characteristics of virtual reality imaging, a new model is established. After a large number of comparative experiments, it was found thatproposed method significantly improved the ability of feature region block extraction in VR panoramic image mosaic when compared with the traditional method. At the same time of improving the accuracy, the mapping time is shortened by more than 1 / 3, and the mapping efficiency is improved. Present research work is an innovation of virtual reality panoramic technology.

Abstract Background Colorectal signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a rare histological subtype of colorectal adenocarcinoma with high metastatic frequency compared to non‐SRCC colorectal cancer (NOS). The aim of this study was to analyze prognostic factors of colorectal SRCC with different metastatic sites and evaluate impacts of various therapies for metastatic colorectal SRCC. Methods Patients with NOS and SRCC were from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database during 2010‐2014. χ2 tests were used to compare data significance. Kaplan‐Meier and COX models were used to analyze the differences in the survival. Propensity‐matched analyses were used to adjust numerical differences. Results Among the 173 460 patients, 1932 (1.11%) patients had colorectal SRCC. In univariate analysis, older age, male sex, and peritoneum metastasis were associated with higher mortality risk. The peritoneum was both the site with the highest metastatic frequency and the site with the worst prognosis in SRCC. In the COX regression model, peritoneum‐metastatic SRCC patients receiving chemotherapy had better survival than patients treated with surgery. Conclusions Our study analyzed the unique metastatic pattern of colorectal SRCC toward different sites and found that compared to surgery, chemotherapy was associated with better survival for colorectal SRCC patients with distant metastasis, which provided insights for future SRCC patient treatment.

Chronic stress appears to alter DNA methylation and DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) in brain regions related to emotion. Collapsin response mediator protein-2 (CRMP2) mediates the development of depression by regulating microtubule dynamics. In this study, rats were subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). At the end of the CUMS procedure, normal saline or fluoxetine was administered to the rats. Moreover, normal saline or the 5-aza-2’-deoxycytidine (5-aza) was administered to the hippocampal CA1 region of the rats. Behavioral tests were performed to evaluate the depressive-like phenotypes. The CRMP2 DNA methylation levels and cytoskeletal microtubular system-related biomarkers were detected by several molecular biology techniques. The results showed that the rat model of depression was successfully established by exposure to CUMS, and fluoxetine treatment exerted an antidepressant-like effect. We observed the upregulation of DNMT1 and DNMT3a in the hippocampus of stressed rats. CUMS induced a decrease in CRMP2 expression and an increase in phosphorylated CRMP2 (pCRMP2) expression in the hippocampus of rats. The rate of DNA methylation in the CpG island of the CRMP2 promoter region in the hippocampus of stressed rats was significantly higher than that in control rats. Moreover, CUMS significantly decreased the interaction between CRMP2 and α-tubulin and decreased the microtubule dynamics. Chronic fluoxetine treatment reversed these changes. Also, hypomethylation induced by 5-aza injection into the hippocampal CA1 region caused antidepressant-like effects and increased CRMP2 expression and microtubule dynamics. These results suggested that CRMP2 DNA methylation may be involved in regulating the cytoskeletal microtubular system and mediating depressive-like behaviors.

Abstract Roots are fundamentally important for growth and development, anchoring the plant to its growth substrate, facilitating water and nutrient uptake from the soil, and sensing and responding to environmental signals such as biotic and abiotic stresses. Understanding the molecular mechanisms controlling root architecture is essential for improving nutrient uptake efficiency and crop yields. In this review, we describe the progress being made in the identification of genes and regulatory pathways involved in the development of root systems in rice (Oryza sativa L.), including crown roots, lateral roots, root hairs, and root length. Genes involved in the adaptation of roots to the environmental nutrient status are reviewed, and strategies for further study and agricultural applications are discussed. The growth and development of rice roots are controlled by both genetic factors and environmental cues. Plant hormones, especially auxin and cytokinin, play important roles in root growth and development. Understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating root architecture and response to environmental signals can contribute to the genetic improvement of crop root systems, enhancing their adaptation to stressful environmental conditions.

Current evidence supports the idea that neural plasticity is a potential cause of depression. Abundant studies indicate that CRMP2 has important roles in neural plasticity. Moreover, CRMP2 may contribute to the etiology of depression. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying the role of CRMP2 remain unclear. DNA methylation alteration is generally acknowledged to be involved in the development of depression. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the expression and DNA methylation of CRMP2 in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of a rat depression model. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was used to establish a rat depression model, and body weight and behavioral tests were used to evaluate the effects of stress. Real-time PCR and Western blotting were used to test CRMP2 mRNA and protein expression, respectively, in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of rats. DNA methylation levels of the CRMP2 promoter were analyzed by bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSP). CUMS caused depressive-like behavior in rats, as evidenced by: decreased body weight and sucrose preference rate; decreases in the total distance traveled, rearing frequency, velocity, and duration in the center in the open field test (OFT); and prolonged immobility in the forced swimming test (FST). CRMP2 mRNA and protein expression in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were significantly decreased in the CUMS group compared with the control group. The levels of CRMP2 promoter DNA methylation in the hippocampus of the CUMS group were significantly higher than those of the control group, while these changes were not observed in the prefrontal cortex of CUMS rats. Our data provide evidence that altered expression of CRMP2 in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex is associated with the pathogenesis of depression. Moreover, the results also suggest regional differences in the regulation of DNA methylation in the CRMP2 promoter between the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex during the development of depression.

Earthworms and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are important ecosystem engineers that co-occur in soil and belong to different guilds. In this study, hyphosphere interactions between earthworms and AM fungi on soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability were investigated under field conditions with a modified chamber near the maize root. The experimental design consisted of root exclusion chambers that either allowed (30 μm pores) or precluded (0.45 μm pores) growth of AMF hyphae (AM factor), with or without earthworm addition (earthworm factor). Hyphal length density, soil $\hbox{NH}_4^ + \hbox{- N}$ and $\hbox{NO}_3^ - \hbox{- N}$ content, soil available P concentration, urease and alkaline phosphatase activities were tested at maize VT (tassel), R1 (silking), R2 (blister), R3 (milk) and R4 (dough) stage. Results showed that earthworms did not impact hyphal length density in the hyphosphere. AM and AM + E treatments caused a decrease in available phosphorus, while the E treatment increased $\hbox{NO}_3^ - \hbox{- N}$ and $\hbox{NH}_4^ + \hbox{- N}$ content during the whole experiment period. AM and AM + E treatments could significantly increase soil alkaline phosphatase activities compared to non-AMF treatments, while E and AM + E treatment could significantly increase soil urease activities compared to non-Earthworm treatments. Hyphosphere regulation of earthworms and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus on soil N and P availability might lead to greater nutrient uptake by plant. These interactions are important for utilization of soil biological fertilization in sustainable agro-ecosystems.

ObjectiveAccumulating evidences indicate that gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) may contribute to the pathophysiology of depression. However, the mechanism of the involvement of GRPR in the progression of depression remains unclear. Here, we showed the extent to which stress and antidepressant treatment impact GRPR expression, and explored the interactions between 5-HT2a receptor (5-HT2aR) and GRPR at the cellular level.MethodsThe rat depression models were created with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Then, these rats were treated with fluoxetine for 4 weeks after CUMS. We measured body weight and performed behavioral tests to determine the effects of stress and fluoxetine on depressive-like behaviors. Real-time PCR and western blotting were used to measure the mRNA and protein expression levels of GRPR in the hypothalamus. Then, Flag-tagged protein (pcmv-Flag-5HT2aR) and Myc-tagged protein (pcmv-Myc-GRPR) expression vectors were constructed, identified, and transfected into human embryo kidney 293 (HEK293) cells. The interaction between 5-HT2aR and GRPR was detected by coimmunoprecipitation and double-label immunofluorescence.ResultsThe rats subjected to 4 weeks of CUMS showed depressive-like behaviors, including decreased body weight, sucrose preference, and distance traveled, rearing frequency and velocity in the open field test and increased immobility time in the forced swimming test. Fluoxetine treatment reversed CUMS-induced depressive-like behavior. The mRNA and protein expression of GRPR in the hypothalamus was significantly increased after 4 weeks CUMS exposure, and treatment with fluoxetine reversed these changes. Coimmunoprecipitation showed that 5-HT2aR and GRPR combine with each other in vitro. Immunofluorescence revealed that the 5-HT2aR and GRPR were colocalization in both the cell membrane and cytoplasm.ConclusionOur study enhances the understanding of the involvement of GRPR in depression. This study also provides in vitro experimental evidence of the interaction between 5-HT2aR and GRPR, which may play an important role in the pathogenesis of depression.

Avian influenza A viruses (AIVs) H5N1, first identified in 1996, are highly pathogenic in domestic poultry and continue to occasionally infect humans. In this study, we sought to identify genetic changes that occurred during their multiple invasions to humans. We evaluated all available H5Nx AIV genomes. Significant signals of positive selection were detected in 29 host-shift branches. 126 parallel evolution sites were detected on these branches, including 17 well-known sites (such as T271A, A274T, T339M, Q591K, E627K, and D701N in PB2; A134V, D154N, S223N, and R497K in HA) that play roles in allowing AIVs to cross species barriers. Our study suggests that during human infections, H5Nx viruses have experienced adaptive evolution (positive selection and convergent evolution) that allowed them to adapt to their new host environments. Analyses of adaptive evolution should be useful in identifying candidate sites that play roles in human infections, which can be tested by functional experiments.

Abstract Plant–soil feedback (PSF) can influence plant community structure via changes in the soil microbiome. However, how these feedbacks depend on the soil environment remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that disintegrating a naturally aggregated soil may influence the outcome of PSF by affecting microbial communities. Furthermore, we expected plants to differentially interact with soil structure and the microbial communities due to varying root morphology. We carried out a feedback experiment with nine plant species (five forbs and four grasses) where the “training phase” consisted of aggregated versus disintegrated soil. In the feedback phase, a uniform soil was inoculated in a fully factorial design with soil washings from conspecific‐ versus heterospecific‐trained soil that had been either disintegrated or aggregated. This way, the effects of prior soil structure on plant performance in terms of biomass production and allocation were examined. In the training phase, soil structure did not affect plant biomass. But on disintegrated soil, plants with lower specific root length (SRL) allocated more biomass aboveground. PSF in the feedback phase was negative overall. With training on disintegrated soil, conspecific feedback was positively correlated with SRL and significantly differed between grasses and forbs. Plants with higher SRL were likely able to easily explore the disintegrated soil with smaller pores, while plants with lower SRL invested in belowground biomass for soil exploration and seemed to be more susceptible to fungal pathogens. This suggests that plants with low SRL could be more limited by PSF on disintegrated soils of early successional stages. This study is the first to examine the influence of soil structure on PSF. Our results suggest that soil structure determines the outcome of PSF mediated by SRL. We recommend to further explore the effects of soil structure and propose to include root performance when working with PSF.

Since 2013, the H7N9 avian influenza A virus (AIV) has caused human infections and to the extent of now surpassing H5N1. This raises an alarm about the potential of H7N9 to become a pandemic problem. Our compilation of the amino acid changes required for AIVs to cross the species-barrier discovers 58 that have very high proportions in both the human- and avian-isolated H7N9 viruses. These changes correspond with sporadic human infections that continue to occur in regions of avian infections. Among the six internal viral genes, amino acid changes do not differ significantly between H9N2 and H7N9, except for V100A in PA, and K526R, D627K, and D701N in PB2. H9N2 AIVs provide internal genes to H7N9. Most of the amino acid changes in H7N9 appear to come directly from H9N2. Seventeen amino acid substitutions appear to have fixed quickly by the 5th wave. Among these, six amino acid sites in HA1 are receptor binding sites, and PB2-A588V was shown to promote the adaptation of AIVs to mammals. The accelerated fixation of mutations may promote the adaptation of H7N9 to human, but need further functional evidence. Although H7N9 AIVs still cannot efficiently transmit between humans, they have the genetic makeup associated with human infections. These viruses must be controlled in poultry to remove the threat of it becoming a human pandemic event.

Background: The Tower of London (TOL) task is one of the most commonly used tests for evaluating executive functions, and can indicate planning and problem-solving abilities. The aim of this study was to evaluate hemodynamic changes between the task period and rest period in patients with bipolar depression during the TOL task and the verbal fluency task (VFT) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).Methods: Forty-three patients with bipolar depression and 32 healthy controls (HCs) matched for sex, age, handedness, and years of education were enrolled in this study. All participants were aged between 16 and 50. All patients in our study were taking medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers at the time of measurement. Changes in oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) levels in frontal areas during the TOL task and VFT were evaluated using a 41-channel NIRS system.Results: During the TOL task, the patients with bipolar depression exhibited significantly smaller changes in the bilateral dorsal-lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) than the HCs. During the VFT task, the patients with bipolar depression exhibited significantly smaller changes in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), the right DLPFC and both the right and left prefrontal cortex (PFC) than the HCs.Limitations: Our sample size was small, and the effects of medication cannot be excluded.Conclusions: These results indicate that planning and problem solving dysfunction is related to the impairment of the prefrontal cortex in patients with bipolar depression, and NIRS can be used to assess planning and problem solving abilities, which are essential to daily life in patients with bipolar disorder.

Fishes are, by far, the most diverse group of vertebrates. Their classification relies heavily on morphology. In practice, the correct morphological identification of species often depends on personal experience because many species vary in their body shape, color and other external characters. Thus, the identification of a species may be prone to errors. Due to the rapid development of molecular biology, the number of sequences of fishes deposited in GenBank has grown explosively. These published data likely contain errors owing to invalid or incorrectly identified species. The erroneous data can lead to downstream problems. Thus, it is critical that such errors get identified and corrected. A strategy based on DNA barcoding can detect potentially erroneous data, especially when intraspecific K2P variation exceeds interspecific K2P divergence. Analyses of the most used DNA marker for fishes (mitochondrial Cytb) discovers that intraspecific differences of fishes are generally less than 1%, while interspecific differences are generally higher than 10%. Based on this ruler, our analyses identify 1,303 potential problematic Cytb sequences of fishes in GenBank and point to taxonomic problems, errors in identification, genetic introgression and other concerns. Care must be taken to avoid the perpetuation of errors when using these available data.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response to infection. Sepsis, which can lead to severe sepsis, septic shock, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, is an important cause of mortality. Pathogenesis is extremely complex. In recent years, cell hypoxia caused by mitochondrial dysfunction has become a hot research field. Sepsis damages the structure and function of mitochondria, conversely, mitochondrial dysfunction aggravated sepsis. The treatment of sepsis lacks effective specific drugs. The aim of this paper is to undertake a narrative review of the current experimental treatment for mitochondrial dysfunction in sepsis. The search was conducted in PubMed databases and Web of Science databases from 1950 to January 2014. A total of 1,090 references were retrieved by the search, of which 121 researches met all the inclusion criteria were included. Articles on the relationship between sepsis and mitochondria, and drugs used for mitochondrial dysfunction in sepsis were reviewed retrospectively. The drugs were divided into four categories: (1) Drug related to mitochondrial matrix and respiratory chain, (2) drugs of mitochondrial antioxidant and free radical scavengers, (3) drugs related to mitochondrial membrane stability, (4) hormone therapy for septic mitochondria. In animal experiments, many drugs show good results. However, clinical research lacks. In future studies, the urgent need is to develop promising drugs in clinical trials.

The complete mitogenome of the Critically Endangered Largetooth Sawfish Pristis pristis (Rhinopristiformes, Pristidae) is presented in this study. The genome is 16,912 bp in length with a nucleotide base composition of 32.0% A, 26.5% C, 13.2% G, and 28.3% T, containing 37 genes typical of vertebrates. Two start (GTG and ATG) and two stop (TAG and TAA/T) codons are found in the protein-coding genes. The 22 tRNA genes range from 66 bp (tRNA-Ser2) to 75 bp (tRNA-Leu1). The tRNA-Pro gene is duplicated with an unknown sequence between the two copies. Bayesian phylogenetic reconstruction showed that P. pristis clusters with the Pristis clade with strong posterior probability (100%).
