The objective was to evaluate the effect of increasing the dietary inclusion of spineless cactus (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck) on the carcass characteristics and meat quality of confined lambs. Thirty-two male Santa Inês lambs with an average age of 140 days and an initial body weight of 20.4 ± 2.60 kg were used in this study. The lambs were housed in individual stalls for 70 days and individually fed a ration with spineless cactus included at 0, 241, 519, or 753 g/kg of dry matter (DM). The lambs were slaughtered, and characteristics of the carcass and meat were recorded and analysed. Inclusion of spineless cactus had a quadratic effect on the bodyweight at slaughter and on the empty bodyweight of the lambs. The inclusion of 500 g/kg of spineless cactus provided the highest predicted cold carcass weight (16.03 kg). There was a quadratic effect of the inclusion of spineless cactus on the weight of meat cuts and leg composition of lambs. The inclusion of spineless cactus did not influence pH, tenderness, and water-retention capacity of the meat. However, the intramuscular fat content increased 1 mg for every 10 g/kg inclusion of spineless cactus in the diet. Quadratic effects were observed of the inclusion of spineless cactus on the weights of the liver, heart, rumen, blood, skin and internal fat of the lambs. Up to 500 g/kg of spineless cactus could be included in the diet of confined lambs.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay in diets based on spineless cactus on the nutrient intake and digestibility, ingestive behaviour and ruminal parameters of confined sheep. In order to do this, eight male sheep with ruminal cannulae were used, distributed across four levels (0, 333, 666 and 1.000 g kg-1 of dry matter) of replacement of Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay in a double Latin square experimental design. The animals were confined for 60 days divided into four periods of 15 days. The replacement of Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay did not influence the dry matter intake or digestibility. However, it influenced in a positive linear fashion the intake of non-fibrous carbohydrates and in a linear negative fashion the digestibility of insoluble fibre in neutral detergent and crude protein. The ruminal ammonia-nitrogen and the crude protein ruminal content decreased linearly with the replacement of Tifton 85 hay with maniçoba hay. There was no effect of hay replacement on the production of volatile fatty acids or the microbial biofilm. The total replacement Tifton 85 by maniçoba hay in spineless cactus diets for sheep did not influence total digestible nutrient intake, volatile fatty acid production or biofilm, but did affect crude protein digestibility, ammonia-nitrogen and crude protein content in the rumen. Therefore, maniçoba hay can replace 300 g kg-1 grass hay in spineless cactus diets for sheep without compromising intake and ruminal parameters. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da substituição do feno de Tifton 85 pelo feno de maniçoba em dietas à base de palma forrageira sobre a ingestão e digestibilidade de nutrientes, comportamento ingestivo e parâmetros ruminais de ovinos confinados. Foram utilizados oito ovinos machos com cânula ruminal, distribuídos em quatro níveis (0, 333, 666 e 1.000 g kg-1 de matéria seca) de substituição do feno de Tifton 85 por feno de maniçoba em delineamento quadrado latino. Os animais permaneceram confinados por 60 dias divididos em quatro períodos de 15 dias. A substituição do feno de Tifton 85 por feno de maniçoba não influenciou no consumo ou digestibilidade de matéria seca. No entanto, influenciou de forma linear negativa na digestibilidade da fibra insolúvel em detergente neutro e proteína bruta. O nitrogênio amoniacal e proteína bruta ruminal diminuiu linearmente com a substituição do feno de Tifton 85 por feno de maniçoba. Não houve efeito da substituição do feno na produção de ácidos graxos voláteis ou no biofilme microbiano. A substituição total de Tifton 85 por feno de maniçoba em rações de palma forrageira para ovinos não influenciou o consumo de nutrientes digestíveis totais, a produção de ácidos graxos voláteis ou biofilme, mas afetou a digestibilidade da proteína bruta, nitrogênio amoniacal e teor de proteína bruta no rúmen. Portanto, o feno de maniçoba pode substituir até 300 g kg-1 de feno de capim em dietas de palma forrageira para ovinos, sem comprometer o consumo e os parâmetros ruminais.

The objective was to evaluate the intake and digestibility of nutrients, ingestive behavior, and performance of goats fed with spineless cactus genotypes resistant to carmine cochineal (Miúda or Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (OEM). Thirty castrated male goats, without defined breed, aged 12 to 14 months, with an average body weight of 19.0±2.8kg, were distributed in a completely randomized design among three treatments (Control - Tifton hay, Miúda, and OEM) and ten replicates; the initial weight was considered as the covariate. The intake of organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was highest in the control treatment, while the intake of NFC was higher in the OEM diet. Treatments containing forage cactus showed the highest digestibility of DM, OM, and NFC. The animals fed the control diet spent more time on rumination and total chewing, but the time spent feeding or feeding efficiency, and performance did not differ. The use of spineless cactus genotypes resistant to carmine cochineal (Miúda and Orelha de Elefante Mexicana) in a diet for goats, in the amount of 450g/kg of DM does not interfere with the performance of the animals and improves the digestibility of OM and NFC. RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar o consumo e a digestibilidade de nutrientes, o comportamento ingestivo e o desempenho de caprinos alimentados com genótipos de palma forrageira resistentes à cochonilha-carmim (miúda ou orelha-de-elefante-mexicana (OEM). Trinta cabritos machos, castrados, sem raça definida, com idades entre 12 e 14 meses e peso corporal médio de 19,0±2,8kg, foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em três tratamentos (controle - feno de tifton; miúda e OEM) e 10 repetições; o peso inicial foi considerado a covariável. O consumo de matéria orgânica (MO) e de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) foi maior no tratamento controle; enquanto a ingestão de CNF foi maior na dieta OEM. Tratamentos contendo palma forrageira apresentaram as maiores digestibilidades de MS, MO e CNF. Os animais alimentados com a dieta controle gastaram mais tempo em ruminação e em mastigação total, mas o tempo gasto com alimentação ou a eficiência alimentar e o desempenho não diferiram. A utilização de genótipos de palma forrageira resistentes à cochonilha-carmim (miúda e orelha-de-elefante-mexicana) na dieta de caprinos, na quantidade de 450g/kg de MS, não interfere no desempenho dos animais e melhora a digestibilidade de MO e CNF.

Objective An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of crude glycerin (0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%) used as a substitute for corn in lamb feed on the quantitative characteristics of the carcass. Methods A total of 40 crossbred Santa Inês lambs that were four months old with a mean initial weight of 21.0±0.8 kg were randomly distributed in four treatments with ten replicates. The animals were slaughtered after 66 days of confinement. The effects of crude glycerin as a replacement for corn in the diet of the lambs on the carcass characteristics, commercial cut weight and yield and carcass measurements were studied. Results There was an increasing linear effect for body weight at slaughter with the replacement of corn by crude glycerin. The dry matter and metabolizable energy intakes, weight of the empty body, hot carcass weight and cold carcass weight showed a quadratic effect, with maximum crude glycerin levels estimated at 10.9%, 9.8%, 10.83%, 11.78%, and 11.35%, respectively. The initial pH was not influenced by the replacement of corn for crude glycerin, while the final pH presented a quadratic effect. The other parameters of the carcass and the weights and yields of commercial cuts were not influenced. There was also no effect of the diets on carcass morphometric measurements, except for the thoracic perimeter and the carcass compactness index, which presented quadratic and linear effects, respectively. Conclusion Crude glycerin can replace up to 18% of corn because it favours muscle tissue deposition without promoting changes in the main carcass characteristics of lambs.

The aim of this study was to investigate the replacement effect of cactus cladodes with cassava root and corn silage (CRCS) (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%, dry matter basis) in diets of lactating dairy cows on nutrients intake and digestibility, microbial protein synthesis, nitrogen balance, and milk yield. Ten Holstein cows with an average milk yield of 16 kg/day, an initial body weight (BW) of 670 ± 35 kg, and an average of 17 weeks in milking were assigned to an experiment using a double 5 × 5 Latin square design. The ratio of forage/concentrate was 82:18, and the ingredients used were cactus cladodes, cassava root, corn silage, soybean meal, wheat meal, urea, and mineral premix. The intake of dry matter, organic matter, and total digestible nutrients were not influenced by the replacement levels. On the other hand, the intake of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber increased while the intake of non-fiber carbohydrates decreased with addition of CRCS. The digestibility of the nutrients was not changed as the milk yield as fat-corrected milk production and milk content of fat, protein, lactose, and total solids. The microbial protein synthesis, microbial protein efficiency, nitrogen balance, and efficiency of N in milk were not changed. Therefore, we recommend the complete replacement of cactus cladodes by cassava root and corn silage in the diets of lactating cows with an average milk yield of 16 kg/day.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the qualitative parameters and nutritional potential of silage of arboreal cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) shoots. The experiment was carried out in a 4×2 factorial arrangement, for two silage forms (in natura or pre-dried), with four treatments, as follows: without additives (WA); with inoculant (WI); with 2% ground corn (GC); and with 2% ground corn with inoculant (GC+I). The fermentative quality and nutritional parameters of the silages were evaluated. Fermentative quality was better in the WI and GC+I silages. The dry matter content was higher in the pre-dried silage, while the crude protein contents of in natura silage were higher in the WA and WI treatments. The lowest values of neutral detergent fiber and acid-digested lignin were observed in the WI treatment, for pre-dried silage. Total digestible nutrients and total volume of gas were higher in the pre-dried silage, in the WI and GC treatments, respectively. In vitro dry matter digestibility was lower in WA silage, in both forms. Silage of arboreal cotton associated with inoculant or with inoculant with ground corn shows a better fermentation profile and improves the energy and nutritional values, both in natura and pre-dried forms; however, in natura silage is less laborious for rural producers. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os parâmetros qualitativos e o potencial nutricional da silagem da parte aérea do algodão (Gossypium hirsutum) arbóreo. O experimento foi realizado em arranjo fatorial 4×2, para duas formas de silagem (in natura ou pré-seca), com quatro tratamentos, conforme a seguir: sem aditivos (SA); com inoculante (CI); com 2% de milho moído (MM); e com 2% de milho moído e inoculante (MM+I). Foram avaliados a qualidade fermentativa e os parâmetros nutricionais das silagens. A qualidade fermentativa foi melhor nas silagens CI e MM+I. Os teores de matéria seca foram maiores na silagem pré-seca, enquanto a proteína bruta na silagem in natura foi maior nos tratamentos SA e CI. Os menores valores de fibra em detergente neutro e lignina digerida em ácido foram observados no tratamento CI, para a silagem pré-seca. Os nutrientes digestíveis totais e o volume total de gás foram maiores na silagem pré-seca, nos tratamentos CI e MM, respectivamente. A digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca foi menor na silagem SA, nas duas formas. A silagem de algodão arbóreo associada ao inoculante ou ao inoculante com milho moído apresenta o melhor perfil fermentativo e melhora o valor energético e nutricional, tanto na forma in natura como na pré-seca; porém, a silagem in natura é menos trabalhosa para os produtores rurais.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the total or partial replacement of Tifton 85 hay (TH) by cassava foliage hay (CH) and/or spineless cactus (SC) on the carcass characteristics and meat quality of confined lambs. Thirty-five Dorper x Santa Ines crossbred lambs were used, with an initial average weight of 16.0 ± 1.9 kg, fed with five treatment diets: 70% TH, 70% CH, 35% TH + 35% CH, 35% TH + 35% SC, and 35% CH + 35% SC. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the replacement of corn by cassava dregs (0, 33, 66, and 100%) in the diet of lamb on physicochemical parameters, fatty acid profile, and sensory attributes of meat. Forty male non-castrated Santa Inês crossbred lambs with an initial average weight of 20 ± 1.87 kg were slaughtered after 70 days. The physicochemical parameters and chemical composition of meat were not affected by the diets. Eicosenoic (C20:1n-9) and linolenic (C18:3n-3) acids increased linearly and there was a linear decreasing effect for the flavor score with increasing cassava dregs in the diets. The replacement of corn by cassava dregs did not influence omega-6:omega-3 ration or the total desirable fatty acids, as well as the color, aroma, tenderness, juiciness, or overall evaluation scores. Cassava dregs may be added in the diets of lambs, without negative effects on physicochemical characteristics, chemical composition, and fatty acid indexes, with positive effects on unsaturated fatty acid content. However, the total replacement of corn altered the sensory attributes and decreased purchase intent of the meat.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the intake of nutrients and water, digestibility, nitrogen balance, microbial protein synthesis, performance and blood parameters of lambs fed increasing levels (0, 150, 300 and 450 g/kg of DM basis) of fresh spineless cactus cv. Miuda (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck) included in the diet. Forty male (noncastrated) crossbred Santa Ines lambs, averaging 18.6 ± 2.8 kg body weight (BW) at the beginning of the study, were used in this trial. A completely randomized design was used, with ten replicates per treatment and initial BW as a covariate. Quadratic behaviour was observed for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), total carbohydrates (TC) and metabolizable energy (ME) intake, with maximum values estimated with 242.9, 236.4, 229.2, 218.2, 238.2 and 284.5 g/kg of spineless cactus inclusion, respectively. Non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) intakes presented higher and lower values respectively in lambs fed 450 g/kg of spineless cactus. Voluntary water intake decreased with increasing quantities of spineless cactus, however, water intake from feed and total water intake increased. The digestibility of DM, OM, NFC and TC presented higher values with 450 g/kg of spineless cactus. Total weight gain and daily weight gain showed an increasing linear effect, while feed conversion decreased. Urine volume and microbial protein were higher for lambs fed 450 g/kg of spineless cactus, while urea excretion was lower. There was a quadratic effect on serum glucose and calcium levels with maximum values for inclusion of spineless cactus of 368.9 and 150 g/kg respectively, whereas s-hydroxybutyrate and blood urea decreased linearly; phosphorus and magnesium concentrations increased, with lower and higher values in animals fed the highest levels of spineless cactus, respectively. The inclusion of spineless cactus by up to 450 g/kg of DM improves the microbial efficiency, nutrient utilization and the performance of the animals, without causing adverse effects on blood parameters.

Urban) and Mororó hay (Bauhinia cheilanta Bong Stend). Thirty male goats (castrated), with no defined breed, with an initial mean body weight of 19 ± 0.35 kg and approximately 90 days of age were used. The treatments consisted of grazing without supplementation (GWS), grazing + Jitirana hay (GJ); grazing + Jitirana hay + spineless cactus (GJSC); grazing + Mororó hay (GM); grazing + Mororó hay + spineless cactus (GMSC). The means of the variables were tested by Tukey's test at 5% probability. The goats fed GWS, GJSC, GM and GMSC presented higher weights and yields of the diaphragm, and the spleen weight (p < 0.05). The highest yield of omasum (p < 0.05) occurred with goats fed GJ treatment. There were treatments (p < 0.05) on omental fat weight and leg yield, with the highest values for goats, fed GWS, GJSC, GM, and GMSC. The "Buchada" EBW-1 yield was higher (p < 0.05) for animals fed GWS. Feeding supplementation of goats grazing in the Caatinga had few influences on weights and yields of non-carcass components. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of crude glycerin addition containing 80.5% glycerol on nutrient intake, digestibility, performance and blood parameters of lambs in feedlot. We used 40 Santa Ines crossbred uncastrated male lambs, with 21 kg ± 0.8 kg initial body weight. These were designed in randomised blocks, with ten replications of each of four treatments: 0, 6, 12 and 18% crude glycerin. There was a quadratic effect (P 0.05) on cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, globulin, creatinine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase and gamma glutamyl transferase. The addition of crude glycerin may be included in lamb diets up to 18%.

This aim of this study was to evaluate the intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients, ingestive behavior, blood parameters, and performance of lambs fed two roughage:concentrate (R:C) ratios, with or without liquid residue of cassava (LRC). Forty lambs (19.5 ± 1.45 kg body weight) were distributed in a completely randomized 2 × 2 factorial design. The intake of dry matter (1311 g/day) and total digestible nutrients (755 g/day), and the intake (172 g/day) and digestibility (552 g/kg) of crude protein were higher for lambs fed R:C of 40:60. The R:C ratio of 80:20 promoted a higher intake (585 g/day) and digestibility (461 g/kg) of neutral detergent fiber. There was an intake of LRC of 1.37 L/day for lambs fed R:C of 80:20 and 0.42 L/day for lambs fed R:C of 40:60. The lambs fed R:C of 80:20 spent more time in feeding (326 m/day) and rumination (530 m/day). The metabolic profile and performance of lambs were not affected by LRC inclusion. The body weight gain (220 g/day) was higher in lambs fed R:C of 40:60. A roughage:concentrate ratio of 40:60 is recommended for lambs because it resulted in the best performance, regardless of supplementation with liquid residue of cassava.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of inclusion of the spineless cactus variety Miuda (0, 150, 300, and 450 g/kg) on the performance, carcass traits and meat quality of lambs. Forty crossbred Santa Ines lambs with an initial weight of 18.6 ± 2.8 kg were distributed in a randomized design with initial body weight as a covariate. There was a quadratic effect on dry matter, and metabolizable energy intake with the maximum points with the inclusion of the spineless cactus of 243 and 284 g/day, respectively. While the digestible crude protein intake did not differ. The average daily gain increased linearly. There was a quadratic effect on body weight at slaughter, empty body weight, hot carcass yield, and cold carcass yield with maximum values estimated with 265, 299, 254, and 285 g/kg of spineless cactus inclusion. The hot and cold carcass yields, the weights of shoulder, rib, leg, heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, perirenal fat, and carcass compactness index increased. Chemical and physical meat quality traits were not affected; however, the oleic acid, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), MUFA and saturated fatty acids (SFA) ratio (MUFA/SFA), hypocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic fatty acids ratio (h:H), and desirable fatty acids increased linearly, while heptadecanoic, cisvaccenic, transvaccenic, linoleic, eicosapentaenoic acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), PUFA/SFA ratio, the total of omega 3 and omega 6 presented quadratic behavior, with maximum values estimated with levels of 255, 245, 380, 298, 217, 238, 250, 233, and 243 g/kg of spineless cactus. The inclusion of spineless cactus up to 275 g/kg in the diet of lambs improved carcass traits and the desirable fatty acids’ profile of the meat.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the bromatological composition, carbohydrate fractionation, in vitro digestibility and gas production of varieties of forage cactus of the genus Opuntia, associated with different phenological phases. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement consisting of five forage cactus varieties of the genus Opuntia ((IPA-20 (Opuntia ficus-indica Mill), Gigante (Opuntia ficus-indica Mill), Erect Prickly Pear (EPP) (Opuntia stricta Haw), African Prickly Pear (APP) (Opuntia undulata) and F-08 (Opuntia atropes Rose)). and three phenological phases (young, intermediate and mature). The concentrations of neutral detergent fiber and the C ratio of carbohydrates were lower in the Erect Prickly Pear (EPP) variety, in this same variety, a higher proportion of pectin was observed along with the giant variety and higher in vitro digestibility, with similar digestibility for the African Prickly Pear (APP) and F-08. The concentration of total carbohydrates was higher in the IPA-20 variety since the gas production adjusted by the bicompartmental model was higher for APP. Was observed in all varieties greater concentration of neutral detergent fiber and the C fraction of the carbohydrates in the mature cladodes. In vitro digestibility of mature phase was also superior in all varieties except APP. The Erect Prickly Pear and African Prickly Pear varieties present best nutritional value for feeding ruminants and mature phase is the least relevant.

This study aimed to evaluate the intake and digestibility of nutrients, nitrogen use, performance and blood metabolic profile of lambs in finishing fed with urea supplemented alternative feeds. Forty Santa Ines lambs, uncastrated males, with an average body weight of 22.8 ± 2.1 kg, were used in a completely randomized design. The effects of replacing corn with cassava wastewater at 0; 25; 50; 75 and 100% in the sheep diet over chemical composition, fatty acid profile and physical-chemical parameters of meat were studied. Forty Santa Inês breed sheep were slaughtered after 70 days of confinement. The moisture content of meat increased, while the crude protein and ether extract decreased linearly with the replacement. There was a quadratic effect for shear force with minimum force estimated at 2.78 kg / cm ² with 54.25% replacement. There was a quadratic effect for C15:0 and C:17, (0.37 and 1.30 when the replacement was 46.25% and 68.50%, respectively), increasing linearly for the C18:0 and decreasing for the C22:0. For monounsaturated fatty acids there was a decreasing linear effect for C14:1 and C20:1 n9, and increasing to C18:1 n11. For C15:1 a quadratic effect was observed (1.48 when 26.75% of corn was replaced). As to the polyunsaturated fatty acids, there was a quadratic effect for C18:2 9c 11t (0.60 when replacement was 36.66%). There was a linear decrease for relations polyunsaturated: saturated and ω6: ω3, without effect on other relations. Cassava wastewater alters the shear force and chemical and lipid composition of meat.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the substitution of Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp.) with spineless cactus (Nopalea cochenillifera) on the intake, digestibility of nutrients and ingestive behaviour of sheep. Eight rumen-cannulated sheep were used, with an average body weight of 58.44 ± 13.5 kg. The treatments consisted of the replacement of Tifton 85 hay with cactus at levels of 0, 333, 666 and 1000 g/kg. Samples of food and leftovers were collected at the beginning of each trial period. Digestibility was estimated using indigestible acid detergent fibre. Ingestive behaviour was evaluated via scan sampling. The replacement of Tifton 85 hay with spineless cactus had a significant effect (P 0.05) on the intake and digestibility of neutral detergent fibre and non-fibre carbohydrates. The rumination efficiency of neutral detergent fibre was not affected (P 0.05) by the substitution of Tifton 85 hay with spineless cactus. However, plasma glucose, phosphorus and magnesium were linearly influenced by Tifton 85 hay replacement with spineless cactus. Therefore, spineless cactus can be used to replace up to 500 g/kg of Tifton 85 hay in complete diets for sheep.

Objetivou-se determinar os efeitos da substituição do feno de Tifton (Cynodon spp.) por feno de alfafa (Medicago Sativa) em dietas à base de palma forrageira (Nopalea cochenillifera) sobre o balanço hídrico, funções renais e excreção mineral de cabras leiteiras. Utilizou-se 12 cabras da raça Saanen, com peso vivo de 46,23±7,5kg, produção de 3,0 kg leite/dia. O delineamento experimental foi quadrado latino (4x4), com quatro tratamentos (0%; 33,3%; 66,7% e 100% de substituição) e quatro períodos para coleta de dados e amostras. O consumo de matéria seca (CMS), expresso em kg/dia e consumo de água total apresentaram aumento linear (p0,05) pelas dietas. A substituição do feno de Tifton por feno de alfafa em até 300 g/kg de matéria seca, em dietas à base de palma forrageira para cabras em lactação, influencia no consumo de água, sem alterar os índices de excreção urinária.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing Tifton-85 hay (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 % on a dry matter basis) with water hyacinth hay (Eichhornia crassipes) on intake and digestibility of nutrients, feeding behaviour, rumen and blood parameters of sheep. Five uncastrated male sheep, cannulated in the rumen, with an average body weight of 40 kg were assigned in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. The water hyacinth hay contained 870 g/kg dry matter (DM), 159 g/kg crude protein (CP), 547 g/kg neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and 461 g/kg total digestible nutrients (TDN). The DM intake and digestibility of NDF and non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC) were linearly reduced by replacing the Tifton-85 hay with water hyacinth hay. Similarly, there was a linear reduction of rumination time and efficiencies of feeding and rumination of DM and NDF. The concentrations of urea, glucose, AST and GGT in blood plasma were not changed by replacing the Tifton-85 hay with water hyacinth hay. Although water hyacinth hay reduced the intake and digestibility of some nutrients, the Tifton-85 hay replacement could be economically advantageous for sheep feeding.

The effect of the replacement of corn with the liquid residue of cassava was evaluated at levels of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 % in the diets of sheep on the intake and nutrient digestibility, weight gain, and carcass characteristics. Forty non-castrated crossbred Santa Ines sheep at 4 months of age and an initial body weight of 19.5 ± 2.5 kg were slaughtered after 90 days at the feedlot. A quadratic effect was found for intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC), and digestible OM, with estimated values of 1130, 1080, 558, and 777 g/day at 11.2, 11.9, 30.8, and 2.18 % of replacing corn with liquid residue of cassava, respectively. However, the intake of crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) decreased linearly around 105 to 45.3 g CP/day and 413 to 284 g NDF/day. The same effect was found for digestibility of DM (715 to 649 g/kg), OM (725 to 669 g/kg), CP (801 to 759 g/kg), and NDF (486 to 379 g/kg), which decreased linearly as the dietary liquid residue of cassava increased. The maximum average daily gain (174 g/day) was estimated with a 22.4 % replacement level. Liquid residue of cassava can replace up to 25 % of the corn in the diets of sheep, since it was possible to obtain a gain above 100 g/day, which is considered to be satisfactory.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the bromatological composition, carbohydrate fractionation, in vitro digestibility and gas production of varieties of forage cactus of the genus Opuntia, associated with different phenological phases. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement consisting of five forage cactus varieties of the genus Opuntia ((IPA-20 (Opuntia ficus-indica Mill), Gigante (Opuntia ficus-indica Mill), Erect Prickly Pear (EPP) (Opuntia stricta Haw), African Prickly Pear (APP) (Opuntia undulata) and F-08 (Opuntia atropes Rose)). and three phenological phases (young, intermediate and mature). The concentrations of neutral detergent fiber and the C ratio of carbohydrates were lower in the Erect Prickly Pear (EPP) variety, in this same variety, a higher proportion of pectin was observed along with the giant variety and higher in vitro digestibility, with similar digestibility for the African Prickly Pear (APP) and F-08. The concentration of total carbohydrates was higher in the IPA-20 variety since the gas production adjusted by the bicompartmental model was higher for APP. Was observed in all varieties greater concentration of neutral detergent fiber and the C fraction of the carbohydrates in the mature cladodes. In vitro digestibility of mature phase was also superior in all varieties except APP. The Erect Prickly Pear and African Prickly Pear varieties present best nutritional value for feeding ruminants and mature phase is the least relevant.
