Objective: Integration of palliative care initiatives in the intensive care unit (ICU) benefit patients and improve outcomes. Palliative care triggers (PCTs) is a screening tool that aides in stratifying patients who would benefit most from an early palliative care approach. There is no consensus on PCT selection or best timing for implementation. We evaluated the clinical characteristics, ICU and palliative care interventions, and clinical outcomes of critically ill patients with PCT in a community-based mixed ICU. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in a 44-bed adult, mixed ICU in a 407-bed community-based teaching hospital in Florida. Eleven PCTs were used as a screening tool during multidisciplinary rounds (MDRs). Patients were analyzed based on presence or absence of PCT as well as having met high (>2) versus low (2). Conclusions: Our study supports the implementation of a tailored 11-item palliative care screening tool to effectively identify ICU patients with high ICU and palliative care interventions and worse clinical outcomes.

After the general societal and political change in November 1989 in Czechoslovakia, the subject "History of Psychology" became the stable component of curriculum of studying psychology at the Department of Psychology of Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The author of this paper has taught "History of Psychology" in Czech since 1998 for more than 20 years all students of psychology and he is teaching this subject the students of ERASMUS+ program from whole Europe, studying at Charles University in Prague, now. Indivisible part of the curriculum is represented by the history of Czechoslovak and Czech psychology. In References, the most important publications in the field of history of Czechoslovak and Czech psychology are presented.

While a positive view of calling has been ubiquitous since its introduction into the literature over two decades ago, research remains unsettled about the extent to which it contributes to various aspects of the good life: an optimal way of living well via worthwhile endeavors. Further, scholars have identified two conceptual types of calling, marked by internal versus external foci; yet their differential impact on outcomes indicative of the good life, such as eudaimonic and hedonic well-being (characterized by the experience of purpose and meaning versus pleasure and happiness, respectively), is unknown. Through a meta-analysis of 201 studies, we provide the first systematic review focused on these two fundamental theoretical issues in the calling literature: how strongly related callings are to outcomes in the domains of work and life and which type of calling (internally or externally focused) more strongly predicts these outcomes, if either. We find that callings more strongly relate to outcomes indicative of the good life than recently argued. We further find that callings are more strongly linked to work than to life outcomes and to eudaimonic than to hedonic outcomes. The two types of calling converge in being associated with many similar outcomes, but they show some divergence: internally focused callings are more positively related to hedonic outcomes and less positively related to eudaimonic outcomes, relative to externally focused callings. This finding supports a view of callings as hierarchically structured, with a higher-order calling factor composed of two correlated yet distinct lower-order calling types. Integrating our meta-analytic findings with relevant literatures, we propose a theoretical model that addresses psychological and social need fulfillment through which different types of callings contribute to the good life.

Process impairing foam formation occurs regularly in batch distillation devices of the spirit industry. It negatively influences process and product quality. Up to now, such foam-related problems have not been in the focus of scientific investigations. This study aimed at preventing impairing foam formations by adapting the thermal energy input in fruit and grain mash distillations in larger scale batch distillations. The results showed that a reduction of the thermal energy input to 43 ± 1 W·L−1 during the initial heating of the mash leads to less flooding of the distillation apparatus and to a higher concentration of lower boiling compounds like methanol, acetaldehyde, and ethyl acetate as well as ethanol in the first fractions of the distillates. A standard process time and less energy consumption could be achieved by increasing the energy input again after prior reduction. However, this led to a reduction of the ethanol concentration in the distillate fractions of up to 4.3%vol, also most severe in the first fractions. A significant influence on analyzed volatile compounds in the distillate besides ethanol could not be detected. This is the first study that uses defined thermal energy input adaptations for foam management in larger scale distillation devices. The results lead the way to a more efficient distillation process with less foam formation.

We have previously described the role of an essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene, important for cleavage and polyadenylation 1 (IPA1), in the regulation of gene expression through its interaction with Ysh1, the endonuclease subunit of the mRNA 3′-end processing complex. Through a similar mechanism, the mammalian homolog ubiquitin protein ligase E3D (UBE3D) promotes the migratory and invasive potential of breast cancer cells, but its role in the regulation of gene expression during normal cellular differentiation has not previously been described. In this study, we show that CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of Ube3d in 3T3-L1 cells blocks their ability to differentiate into mature adipocytes. Consistent with previous studies in other cell types, Ube3d knockout leads to decreased levels of CPSF73 and global changes in cellular mRNAs indicative of a loss of 3′-end processing capacity. Ube3d knockout cells also display decreased expression of known preadipogenic markers. Overexpression of either UBE3D or CPSF73 rescues the differentiation defect and partially restores protein levels of these markers. These results support a model in which UBE3D is necessary for the maintenance of the adipocyte-committed state via its regulation of the mRNA 3′-end processing machinery.

High-rise construction increasingly dominates the contemporary urban landscape. Adopting a socioecological framework, we show that the physical built environment is linked to lay theories about social power. In five experiments (N = 1,091), we comprehensively test the bi-directional causal link between floor location in high-rises and perceived social power. First, using immersive virtual reality (VR) experience of floor location within a physical urban environment (Experiment 1) and traditional experimental designs (Experiments 2–3), we demonstrate that information about a person’s floor location affects perceptions regarding that individual’s social power. Second, we find that information about a person’s social power influences inferences about that individual’s location on higher (vs. lower) floors (Experiment 4) and encourages greater monetary outlays for the higher locations of powerful employees (Experiment 5). These findings extend theoretical understanding of power signaling and bear important implications for social hierarchies and inequality, choices in the urban environment, and the use of VR technology in social psychology.

There is a critical need to improve optical imaging that will lead to its widespread acceptance for routine clinical procedures. Shortwave infrared (SWIR, 900–1700nm) imaging has demonstrated clear advantages over visible and near-infrared imaging (reduced autofluorescence with improved contrast, resolution, and sensitivity at tissue depth). Here we show that the previously reported compound, pH low insertion peptide (pHLIP) conjugated to indocyanine green (ICG, pHLIP ICG) currently in clinical trials, serves as an excellent candidate for SWIR imaging protocols. SWIR’s increased sensitivity enabled preclinical tumor screening and resection at exposure times as low as 0.1 ms with acceptable signal-to-noise and contrast-to-noise ratios. Imaging was performed under ambient lighting conditions, and SWIRs sensitivity enabled an extended surgical resection window up to 96 hrs post injection in an orthotopic breast cancer mouse model. This work provides a direct precedent for the clinical translation of SWIR pHLIP ICG imaging for cancer resection.One Sentence SummarySWIR imaging under ambient lighting is highly sensitive to pHLIP ICG, a cancer targeting fluorescent agent currently under clinical investigation.

Foaming of mashes during distillation is a common problem encountered in spirit drink production. It has a negative impact on the purity of the final product. This research article presents the key aspects of foam accumulation in rye mashes during distillation. Foam accumulation was influenced by substrate characteristics and process parameters. The experiments showed that pentosan levels and thermal energy input were the crucial parameters for foam accumulation in rye mashes. Foam accumulation was significantly enhanced by higher pentosan levels, due to the higher viscosity imparted by pentosan. Hence, degradation of pentosans prior to distillation presents a way to reduce foam accumulation. In terms of thermal energy input, foam accumulation was significantly lower when the thermal energy input was reduced from 400 to 200 W/L. Substantial foaming only occurred in a narrow temperature range of 89.5 to 98.2 C. The results allowed for the first time to make recommendations to prevent problematic foam accumulation during distillation of rye mashes.

P-selectin is a nanotherapeutic target for enhanced passage of nanoscale drug delivery systems across the vascular barrier and into tumors via transcytosis. While many tumors express P-selection, radiation can be used to induce expression in tumors devoid of P-selectin. This study aims to test whether ultrasound can elicit a similar response through mechanical or thermal bioeffects. Preliminary experiments were performed in vitro using brain tissue derived mouse endothelial cells. A Vevo SoniGene system was used to sonicate cells with low-intensity (2 W/cm2) pulsed ultrasound in a 12-well cell culture plate. Upregulation of P-selectin was seen using a 60 second treatment duration at 50% and 100% duty cycles via flow cytometry analysis. The mean fluorescence intensity, normalized to nontreated cells, was 32 + /- 17.4 and 103 + /- 37.2 for 50% and 100% duty cycles, respectively. Viability remained high with 72.6 + /- 14.5 and 77.5 + /- 8.3% of cells viable for both 50% and 100% duty cycle groups, respectively. These results highlight the potential of ultrasound for active targeting using non-ionizing energy and for tumors where radiation is not feasible. Future studies will identify associated bioeffects and compare ultrasound with radiation for nanotherapeutic delivery in small animal tumor models.

Cleavage by the endonuclease CPSF73 and polyadenylation of nascent RNA is an essential step in co-transcriptional mRNA maturation. Recent work has surprisingly identified CPSF73 as a promising drug target for inhibiting the growth of specific cancers, triggering further studies on understanding CPSF73 regulation and functions in cells. Everyone knows what acrophobia is, and many suffer from it. Before Freud, the so-called “sciences of the mind” reserved a place of honor for vertigo in the domain of mental pathologies, attributing to it that destabilizing and intoxicating element—both attractive and repulsive—without which consciousness itself was inconceivable. Some went so far as to induce it in patients via the use of threatening rotational therapies. In a less cruel, albeit no less radical way, vertigo also staked its claim in the domain of philosophy over the course of the last two centuries. If Montaigne and Pascal could still consider it a perturbation of reason and a trick of the imagination that had to be subdued, subsequent thinkers stopped considering it an imaginative instability to be overcome in order to recognize it as part of reason’s workings: identity manifests itself as tottering, kinetic and, indeed, vertiginous. The critique of the paradigm of consciousness and of its presumed stability proceeds, with varying approaches and outcomes, via the thought of Husserl and Heidegger, as well as Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Jankélévitch, and Robert Klein. This book sets their theoretical articulations side by side with Hitchcock’s famous thriller Vertigo, a drama of identity and its abysses, whose contemplative rhythm was admired by Truffaut.
