The focus of Indonesia's G20 Presidency lies on three main pillars, one of them is transition to sustainable energy. The development of these conditions forced PLN (State Electricity Company in Indonesia) to innovate by participating in implementing the latest digitalization technology in distribution electrical energy to customers, one way to do this is by implementing the smart grid concept, which is digital substation technology, is considered capable to response the challenges of digitizing the electricity system in the energy distribution sector. Digital substation technology in Indonesia is still in development stage and there are only six pilot projects in scattered locations, hence in-depth research is needed regarding equipment requirements and the amount of investment needed by PLN to build digital substations, especially the plan for implementing digital substations in Sulawesi. One of methods for developing digital substations in Indonesia is upgrading conventional into digital substation. Research is conducted by studying and observing the existing digital substation in Indonesia. Afterwards in this paper will be explained how to upgrade and what materials, or equipment that must be equipped to upgrading conventional substations. Then, what is the actual value of the investment needed by PLN to build or upgrading into a digital substation in Indonesia, especially in Sulawesi. Furthermore, whether the upgrading plans can be declared financially feasible.

Este estudo investiga o impacto da Netflix na indústria audiovisual brasileira, com ênfase na suposta diversificação introduzida pela plataforma no Brasil. Objetivamos analisar a dualidade inerente a esse fenômeno, reconhecendo o papel desempenhado pela empresa na ampliação das narrativas brasileiras. Argumentamos que, embora a Netflix proporcione uma plataforma global para essas obras, há o potencial de perdermos a soberania sobre a representação do Brasil e da brasilidade no cenário internacional. Por meio de uma metodologia que incorpora uma análise crítica das estratégias de localização da Netflix no mercado brasileiro, investigamos como estas acabam por diversificar representações nacionais, em um cenário historicamente monopolizado pelo Grupo Globo. Contudo, apontamos, que a Netflix reduz alguns imaginários a estereótipos ou a obras esvaziadas de autenticidade cultural. Este estudo, assim, contribui para uma compreensão das complexas interações entre a produção audiovisual local e os serviços de streaming de vídeo estrangeiros em um mercado do Mundo Majoritário ainda não regulamentado.

En este trabajo se analizan los resultados de una investigación sobre concepciones y prácticas evaluativas de profesores de ciencias químicas, farmacéuticas y bioquímicas de una universidad pública de Chile. Se aplicó una encuesta, 4 grupos focales y 2 entrevistas en profundidad. Participó el 87 % de los docentes y directivos principales. Los resultados se relacionan con las acepciones, propósitos, funciones, e intencionalidades de la evaluación del aprendizaje, que los docentes expresan y aplican en una innovación curricular por competencias. Se concluye la existencia de concepciones y prácticas principalmente de tipo instrumental y objetivizadora de la evaluación, más acorde a un currículum academicista, orientado por objetivos y contenidos, que a un currículum por competencias que busca una actuación profesional en contexto de cambios.

En este artículo se estudia la villa de Sanlúcar de Barrameda durante la Baja Edad Media. Por una parte, se profundiza en la participación de su puerto dentro de las redes marítimas a nivel internacional, con especial atención en la presencia de las flotas mediterráneas. Por otra, se estudia la comunidad genovesa y su consulado, cuyo oficio desempeñó Juan Martínez Verde, célebre notario y regidor.

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract In November 2022 the first Dark Genome Symposium was held in Boston, USA. The meeting was hosted by Rome Therapeutics and Enara Bio, two biotechnology companies working on translating our growing understanding of this vast genetic landscape into therapies for human disease. The spirit and ambition of the meeting was one of shared knowledge, looking to strengthen the network of researchers engaged in the field. The meeting opened with a welcome from Rosana Kapeller and Kevin Pojasek followed by a first session of field defining talks from key academics in the space. A series of panels, bringing together academia and industry views, were then convened covering a wide range of pertinent topics. Finally, Richard Young and David Ting gave their views on the future direction and promise for patient impact inherent in the growing understanding of the Dark Genome.

Abstract Microbiomes never stop changing. Their compositions and functions are shaped by the complex interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic drivers, such as growth and migration rates, species interactions, available nutrients and environmental conditions. Mathematical models help us make sense of these complex drivers and intuitively explain how, why and when specific microbiome states are reached while others are not. To make simulations of microbiome dynamics intuitive and accessible, we present miaSim. miaSim provides users with a wide range of possibilities to match their specific assumptions and scenarios, starting from a core implementation of four widely used models (namely the stochastic logistic model, MacArthur's consumer‐resource model, Hubbell's neutral model and the generalized Lotka‐Volterra model) and several of their derivations. The diverse model implementations share the same data structures and, whenever possible, share state variables, which significantly facilitates cross‐model combinations and comparisons. We combined and simulated some published examples of microbiome models in miaSim and performed cross‐model comparisons and tested diverse model assumptions. Our examples illustrate the reliability, robustness and user‐friendliness of the package. In addition, miaSim is accompanied by miaSimShiny, which allows users to explore the parameter space of their models in real‐time in an intuitive graphical interface. miaSim is fully compatible with the ‘miaverse’, an R/Bioconductor framework for microbiome data science, allowing users to combine and compare model simulations with microbiome datasets. The stable version of miaSim is available through Bioconductor 3.15, and the version for future development is available at https://github.com/microbiome/miaSim. miaSimShiny is available at https://github.com/gaoyu19920914/miaSimShiny. We anticipate that miaSim will significantly facilitate the task of simulating microbiome dynamics, highlighting the role of ecological simulations as important tools in microbiome data science.

El propósito de este artículo es analizar la investigación empírica sobre retroalimentación en español. Con una metodología de revisión sistemática de literatura, se seleccionaron 20 estudios de un total de 297 artículos publicados entre el 2007 al 2021. Los resultados de la revisión indican que existe: a) un predominio de estudios en educación superior, b) un restringido desarrollo de marcos teóricos para la problematización de la retroalimentación y c) enfoques y diseños metodológicos escasamente formulados lo que incide en un limitado análisis y discusión de resultados. Se concluye que la investigación sobre retroalimentación en español es un campo en incipiente construcción, periférico a los debates y producciones internacionales por lo que es necesario realizar esfuerzos sistemáticos para fortalecer su aporte investigativo en el campo.

This study presents a newly developed edge computing platform designed to enhance connectivity between edge devices and the cloud in the agricultural sector. Addressing the challenge of synchronizing a central database across 850 remote farm locations in various countries, the focus lies on maintaining data integrity and consistency for effective farm management. The incorporation of a new edge device into existing setups has significantly improved computational capabilities for tasks like data synchronization and machine learning. This research highlights the critical role of cloud computing in managing large data volumes, with Amazon Web Services hosting the databases. This paper showcases an integrated architecture combining edge devices, networks, and cloud computing, forming a seamless continuum of services from cloud to edge. This approach proves effective in managing the significant data volumes generated in remote agricultural areas. This paper also introduces the PAIR Mechanism, which is a solution developed in response to the unique challenges of agricultural data management, emphasizing resilience and simplicity in data synchronization between cloud and edge databases. The PAIR Mechanism’s potential for robust data management in IoT and cloud environments is explored, offering a novel perspective on synchronization challenges in edge computing.

Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that provides computers the ability to create or improve algorithms without being explicitly programmed by directly learning from data. It is widely used in automation or decision-making tasks in fields such as image or speech recognition, sentiment analysis, or self-driving cars. However, its application in the field of communication networks is limited by the lack of appropriate research resources, such as rich datasets for training or the definition of a standard set of features. In this context, a standard latent space dimension is proposed by performing an autoencoder-based dimensionality reduction process. Different network security datasets are projected onto a lower-dimensional space to determine a standard or convergent dimension. The convergent dimension is determined by identifying the threshold above which diminishing returns begin to occur in the autoencoder loss as the latent space dimension increases. The experimental validation showed that four machine learning classification models, trained with a standard latent space of ten dimensions, performed as well as the models that used the non-reduced versions of the datasets in terms of F1-score and accuracy. Furthermore, a Wilcoxon statistical test showed that the mean accuracy of all classification models trained with the standard latent space dimension had a difference of less than 0.0235 in comparison to the models trained with the original inputs. A negligible difference in accuracy is a significant outcome because researchers can use only the latent space to perform experiments with certainty that the performance of ML models will not be constrained.

This article identifies the essential technologies and considerations for the development of an Automated Cow Monitoring System (ACMS) which uses 3D camera technology for the assessment of Body Condition Score (BCS). We present a comparison of a range of common techniques at the different developmental stages of Computer Vision including data pre-processing and the implementation of Deep Learning for both 2D and 3D data formats commonly captured by 3D cameras. This research focuses on attaining better reliability from one deployment of an ACMS to the next and proposes a Geometric Deep Learning (GDL) approach and evaluating model performance for robustness from one farm to another in the presence of background, farm, herd, camera pose and cow pose variabilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a worldwide healthcare crisis. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have recently been used with encouraging results to help detect COVID-19 from chest X-ray images. However, to generalize well to unseen data, CNNs require large labeled datasets. Due to the lack of publicly available COVID-19 datasets, most CNNs apply various data augmentation techniques during training. However, there has not been a thorough statistical analysis of how data augmentation operations affect classification performance for COVID-19 detection. In this study, a fractional factorial experimental design is used to examine the impact of basic augmentation methods on COVID-19 detection. The latter enables identifying which particular data augmentation techniques and interactions have a statistically significant impact on the classification performance, whether positively or negatively. Using the CoroNet architecture and two publicly available COVID-19 datasets, the most common basic augmentation methods in the literature are evaluated. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the methods of zoom, range, and height shift positively impact the model's accuracy in dataset 1. The performance of dataset 2 is unaffected by any of the data augmentation operations. Additionally, a new state-of-the-art performance is achieved on both datasets by training CoroNet with the ideal data augmentation values found using the experimental design. Specifically, in dataset 1, 97% accuracy, 93% precision, and 97.7% recall were attained, while in dataset 2, 97% accuracy, 97% precision, and 97.6% recall were achieved. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la interacción social de aula y el apoyo pedagógico que tuvieron los docentes en el contexto de formación remota escolar. Se aplicó un enfoque cuantitativo, no experimental y descriptivo. La muestra fue no probabilística, participaron 202 docentes de centros escolares públicos y privados. Se administró un cuestionario con escala Likert, el que presenta, al igual que las subescalas interacción social y la de apoyo pedagógico, una alta confiabilidad. Los datos se codificaron con parámetros tendenciales para establecer relaciones porcentuales descriptivas. Los principales resultados evidencian que el diálogo entre docentes y estudiantes se tendió a favorecer en la educación remota, pero no así entre estudiantes. Reconocen que las instituciones educativas dispusieron de plataformas digitales, sin embargo, existe un importante desacuerdo que el apoyo pedagógico referido a conocimientos teóricos y prácticos, haya sido pertinente. Se concluye sobre las oportunidades y desafíos para mejorar las interacciones sociales y el apoyo pedagógico en la educación remota.

In complex dynamical networks, pinning control techniques are often applied to control a small fraction of the nodes in order to stabilize the network with reduced control effort and energy, facilitating adequate development of the complex network. Selecting the controlled nodes is a key challenge to achieving optimal performance. Theoretical analysis of the network provides the minimum quantity of nodes to control but does not specify which ones should be controlled. Analytically, controllability analysis of the entire network would be ideal, but this becomes difficult for complex networks with a large number of nodes and non-linear dynamics. Another option is to evaluate all possible combinations with the minimum number of necessary nodes or the nodes that can be controlled, but this presents a computational challenge due to the large number of possible combinations. Therefore, the remaining option is the use of metaheuristic algorithms for the rapid and practical evaluation of these combinations. In this work, we propose to optimize the selection of nodes for pinning control based on binary optimization algorithms, subject to control and development constraints. The proposed approach involves finding a binary combination with a fixed number of controlled nodes that best stabilizes the network state to zero. This paper includes a comparative study among state-of-the-art binary optimization algorithms and modified classic optimization algorithms. The applicability of the proposed approach is validated through simulations considering a dynamical discrete-time complex network.

Identification of the associations of cow feed efficiency with feeding behaviour and milk production is important for supporting recommendations of strategies that optimise milk yield. The objective of this study was to identify associations between measures of feed efficiency, feed intake, feeding rate, rumination time, feeding time, and milk production using data collected from 26 dairy cows during a 3 month period in 2018. Cows averaged (mean ± standard deviation) 2.2 ± 1.7 lactations, 128 ± 40 days in milk, 27.5 ± 5.5 kg/day milk, 1.95 ± 0.69 kg feed/1 kg milk—the measure used to express feed conversion ratio (FCR), 575 ± 72 min/day rumination time, and 264 ± 67 min/day feeding time during the observation period. The coefficient of variation for rumination time (min/d) was 12.5%. A mixed linear model was selected for analyses. The most feed inefficient cows with the highest FCR (≥2.6 kg feed/1 kg milk) showed the lowest milk yield (24.8 kg/day), highest feed intake (78.8 kg), highest feeding rate (0.26 kg/min) and BCS (3.35 point). However, the relative milk yield (milk yield per 100 kg of body weight) was the highest (4.01 kg/day) in the most efficient group with the lowest FCR (≤1.4 kg feed/1 kg milk). Our study showed that the most efficient cows with the lowest FCR (≤1.4 kg feed/1 kg milk) had the highest rumination time (597 min/day; p < 0.05), feeding time (298 min/day; p < 0.05), rumination/activity ratio (4.39; p < 0.05) and rumination/feeding ratio (2.04; p < 0.05). Less active cows (activity time 164 min/day; p < 0.05) were the most efficient cows with the lowest FCR (≤1.4 kg feed/1 kg milk). The behavioural differences observed in this study provide new insight into the association of feed behaviour and feed efficiency with milk performance. Incorporating feeding behaviour into the dry matter intake model can improve its accuracy in the future and benefit breeding programmes.

El artículo es una revisión de la literatura que estudia 45 documentos publicados entre el 2010 y el 2021. Se presenta un acercamiento a la conceptualización de la Educación No Formal y la Educación Popular en América Latina. Las investigaciones indagan sobre el rastreo de conceptos, construcción histórica en el continente y prácticas alternativas. Para desarrollar la revisión documental, se elaboró un plan de trabajo en el que se categorizó la historia, las prácticas y su metodología y el rastreo bibliográfico; se seleccionaron los aportes más trascendentes de cada categoría; finalmente, se realizó el análisis de los documentos. Se destaca que la Educación No Formal y la Educación Popular se desarrollan en contextos similares.

The prediction of the behavior of vibration isolators is essential for effective and efficient design of these devices, as well as for accurately characterizing the isolator behavior. In this work, an experimental study was performed to characterize the behavior of metal-mesh isolators. Although these elements’ performance is of great interest because of their usage in several applications, their characterization is complex due to their nonlinear nature, among other factors. This study’s aim was to obtain the quasi-static behavior of these isolators, although dynamic tests are required for their complete characterization. These quasi-static tests allowed for the highlighting of some characteristics in a simpler and faster manner and also provided a starting point for designing future dynamic tests. The quasi-static tests performed resulted in the calculation of the hysteresis cycle under different operating conditions and manufacturing parameters. The study of different insulator characteristics, such as the energy dissipation coefficient and stiffness, led to interesting conclusions about the isolator performance. From the results, it was observed that the relative density affected most the nonlinear behavior of the insulator. Moreover, to correctly characterize their behavior, not only the Coulomb’s damping but also the viscous damping had to be considered.

Rural students face multiple issues pursuing higher education, including financial hardships, inadequate college preparation, and geographic isolation from postsecondary institutions. These issues are further complicated for rural Latinx students, especially those from immigrant farm working backgrounds, who are positioned at the intersection of multiple systems of oppression. Yet, rural Latinx students’ college choice and transition experiences are rarely centered in the higher education literature. This article examined the college choices of nine rural Latinx high school seniors from California’s San Joaquin Valley who chose to attend a public higher education institution in this agricultural region. This article drew on three indicators from the culturally engaging campus environments (CECE) model and employed a Chicana/Latina feminist pláticas methodology to analyze the campus elements that motivated rural Latinx students to enroll in public institutions in the San Joaquin Valley. Findings demonstrate that rural Latinx students purposely chose these institutions because they imagined that such institutions would (a) be racially and spatially familiar, (b) allow them to give back to their rural communities through relevant majors, and (c) offer tight-knit collegiate environments. Recommendations for higher education researchers and practitioners interested in increasing college success for rural Latinx students and expanding traditional definitions of rural-serving institutions (RSIs) are provided.

Propósito. En este artículo se analiza la evaluación educativa como un campo de conocimiento teórico-práctico para la formación democrática y transformadora del estudiantado. Discusión. La discusión sobre la evaluación educativa se focaliza en la crítica a los enfoques positivistas-tecnológicos que limitan la complejidad valorativa de los procesos de aprendizaje. Asimismo, se han relevado enfoques de evaluación para los aprendizajes como una forma de cuestionar y reinterpretar la teoría y práctica evaluativa positivista. Sin embargo, el debate ha marginado el rol de la evaluación en su dimensión ética-política para la construcción de sujetos democráticos. El argumento central sostiene que una evaluación transformadora y con un enfoque sociocultural-democrático posibilita la formación de sujetos participativos, comprometidos y reflexivos. Conclusiones. Se concluye con la importancia de resignificar la evaluación como una práctica no solo preocupada por la valoración de los aprendizajes, sino que también orientada a la formación de aspectos valóricos, actitudinales, éticos y democráticos, con la finalidad de contribuir a la construcción de un estudiantado consciente de sí mismo, de las otras personas y de su rol en la sociedad.

Background and aims: The dynamics and implications of intracoronary thrombus constituency in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are not fully understood. We evaluated the expression of CD34, CD61and factor VIII surface markers in thrombi of patients with STEMI and its association with clinical and angiographic characteristics and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Methods: Patients presenting with STEMI undergoing aspiration thrombectomy during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) were included. Morphological, histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of thrombi were assessed by two pathologists blinded to clinical variables and outcomes. Results: The mean age of the 245 patients included was 58 ± 12 years old, and 70 % were men. Regarding the thrombi microscopic patterns, 61 % were classified as recent, 20 % as lytic and 19 % as organized. There were higher levels of the CD61 index in patients with a history of heart failure. Smokers presented lower CD61 positive cells and CD61 index, but this association did not remain significant after multivariable analysis. There was an inverse correlation between CD61 positive cells and CD61 index with the time from onset of pain to the first medical contact, but no other significant association amongst clinical characteristics and antigenic expression. There was higher expression of the CD61 antigen in patients with in-hospital MACE, but statistical significance was borderline (p = 0.06). Conclusions: In this cohort of patients with STEMI, immunohistochemistry of coronary thrombus showed a significantly higher platelet content in patients with previous heart failure and a trend in those with in-hospital MACE. Thrombus' platelet content was inversely related to ischemic time.

Este artigo investiga quais estratégias são utilizadas pela Netflix para anunciar informações sobre o desempenho de suas obras com o intuito de debater as problemáticas e inconsistências da mensuração da audiência em plataformas de streaming. A partir dos relatórios trimestrais divulgados pela empresa entre 2013 e 2020, são analisados os dados referentes à performance das séries ficcionais presentes no catálogo. Argumentamos que, para além da fragmentação da audiência e da espectatorialidade não-linear, a opacidade da plataforma também contribuiria para uma maior flexibilidade na decisão dos parâmetros considerados ao se quantificar uma visualização e quais números são publicitados. Tendo em vista que o mercado de streaming tem sido mar- cado pela intensa competitividade, a divulgação de números de visualizações seria feita com o intuito de apresentar as séries Originais Netflix, produções exclusivas da empresa, como casos de sucesso.

Considering the current proliferation of video streaming platforms as a worldwide phenomenon, this article analyzes how countries in the global periphery are adapting to this effervescent scenario, characterized by the expression “streaming wars.” This research offers a glimpse of Brazil’s audiovisual industry and tries to understand how American streaming companies are penetrating this market, which is currently the sixth-largest in the world, and how the local media conglomerates are reacting. In order to maintain their dominance in the region, free-to-air networks, pay-tv networks, and Brazilian telecommunication companies are using different strategies, either creating their own platforms or partnering with pre-established ones in favor of strengthening themselves. Given Brazil’s particular television organization, based largely on a few broadcast networks, local media conglomerates have fostered a mutualistic relationship with their streaming platforms. The largest national streaming company, Globoplay, has stood out in the local market: not only making TV Globo’s productions available but also producing original content and offering foreign series exclusively. Because traditional television consumption is deeply rooted in the country, several different strategies are required if TV Globo aims to transform viewers into Globoplay subscribers. The Brazilian case study, therefore, reveals nuances and strategies from media industries in the global periphery.

Study Design: This was an interventional randomized trial. Summary of Background Data: Fractures of the thoracolumbar spine represent 90% of all spine fractures, and the thoracolumbar burst fractures (Type A fractures) are the most common in the spine and important cause of posttraumatic kyphotic deformity. The cause of this problem appears to be the structural and mechanical deficiency of the anterior column following indirect fracture reduction by posterior fixation. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of transpedicular intracorporeal grafting associated with short-segment transpedicular fixation on kyphosis progression in patients with thoracolumbar burst fracture Type A3/A4. Materials and Methods: Fifty-nine consecutive patients with thoracolumbar burst fracture were treated with short-segment transpedicular monoaxial screw fixation. Patients were simply randomized divided into transpedicular grafting (TPG) (n = 35; A3 = 20 and A4 = 15) and non-TPG (n = 24; A3 = 19 and A4 = 5). The average follow-up was 21.1 ± 4.2 (range: 16–26) months for the entire study group: 22.1 ± 4.5 months for the TPG group and 20.2 ± 4.8 months for the non-TPG group (P = 0.49). Results: The global mean kyphosis angle before surgery was 21.93° ±3.92°, with 22.06° ±3.55° in the TPG group and 20.75° ±4.68° for non-TPG; P = 0.93. The mean kyphosis angle at the end of follow-up for the entire study was 9.21° ±8.86°, with 8.70° ±2.11° for TPG and 14.08° ±4.73° for non-TPG, (TPG vs. non-TPG, P = 0.010). No obvious clinical complications in both the groups were documented. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that transpedicular bone grafting associated with short-segment fixation in thoracolumbar burst fractures has caused a significant effect on the prevention of kyphosis progression after surgery.

This paper proposes an impulsive control scheme for a complex network that helps reduce the spread of two epidemic diseases: influenza type A and COVID-19. Both are respiratory infections; thus, they have a similar form of transmission, and it is possible to use the same control scheme in both study cases. The objective of this work is to use neural impulsive inverse optimal pinning control for complex networks to reduce the effects of propagation. The dynamic model is considered unknown, for which we design a neural identifier that, through training using the extended Kalman filter algorithm, provides the appropriate nonlinear model for this complex network. The dynamics of the network nodes are represented by the Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) compartmental model in their discrete form. The results of the simulations are presented and addressed, applying the same control scheme but with different parameter values for each case study.

Complex dynamical networks with time-varying connections have characteristics that allow a better representation of real-world complex systems, especially interest in their not static behavior and topology. Their applications reach areas such as communication systems, electrical systems, medicine, robotic, and more. Both continuous and discrete-time complex dynamical networks and the pinning control technique have been studied. However, even with interest in the research on complex networks combining characteristics of discrete-time, time-varying connections, pinning control, and impulsive control, there are few studies reported in the literature. There are some previous studies dealing with impulsively pin-controlling a discrete-time complex network. Nevertheless, they neglect to deal with time-varying connections; they deal with these systems by experimentally using continuous-time methods or linearizing the node dynamics. In this manner, this paper presents a control scheme that not only deals with pin control on discrete-time complex networks but also includes time-varying connections. This paper proposes an impulsive pin control to a zero state using passivity degrees considering a discrete-time complex network with undirected, linear, and diffusive couplings. Additionally, a corresponding mathematical analysis, which allows the representation of the dynamics as a set of symmetric matrices, is presented. With this, certain kinds of time-varying connections can be integrated into the analysis. Moreover, a particular criterion for selecting nodes to pin is also presented. The behavior of the controller for the non-varying and time-varying coupling cases is shown via numeric simulations.

Robot formation control has several advantages that make it interesting for research. Multiple works have been published in the literature using different control approaches. This work presents the control of different groups of robots to achieve a desired formation based on pinning control of complex networks and coordinate translation. The implemented control law comprises complex network bounding, proportional, and collision avoidance terms. The tests for this proposal were performed via simulation and experimental tests, considering different networks of differential robots. The selected robots are Turtlebot3® Waffle Pi robots. The Turtlebot3® Waffle Pi is a differential mobile robot with the Robot Operating System (ROS). It has a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor used to compute the collision avoidance control law term. Tests show favorable results on different formations testing on various groups of robots, each composed of a different number of robots. From this work, implementation on other devices can be derived, as well as trajectory tracking once in formation, among other applications.

Abstract Background Timing and adequacy of peritoneal source control are the most important pillars in the management of patients with acute peritonitis. Therefore, early prognostic evaluation of acute peritonitis is paramount to assess the severity and establish a prompt and appropriate treatment. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical and laboratory predictors for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute peritonitis and to develop a warning score system, based on easily recognizable and assessable variables, globally accepted. Methods This worldwide multicentre observational study included 153 surgical departments across 56 countries over a 4-month study period between February 1, 2018, and May 31, 2018. Results A total of 3137 patients were included, with 1815 (57.9%) men and 1322 (42.1%) women, with a median age of 47 years (interquartile range [IQR] 28–66). The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 8.9%, with a median length of stay of 6 days (IQR 4–10). Using multivariable logistic regression, independent variables associated with in-hospital mortality were identified: age > 80 years, malignancy, severe cardiovascular disease, severe chronic kidney disease, respiratory rate ≥ 22 breaths/min, systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg, AVPU responsiveness scale (voice and unresponsive), blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2) < 90% in air, platelet count < 50,000 cells/mm3, and lactate > 4 mmol/l. These variables were used to create the PIPAS Severity Score, a bedside early warning score for patients with acute peritonitis. The overall mortality was 2.9% for patients who had scores of 0–1, 22.7% for those who had scores of 2–3, 46.8% for those who had scores of 4–5, and 86.7% for those who have scores of 7–8. Conclusions The simple PIPAS Severity Score can be used on a global level and can help clinicians to identify patients at high risk for treatment failure and mortality.

Digital models are the foundation of digital twins, which form the basis of autonomous off-road vehicles. Developing virtual models of off-road vehicles using dynamic reduction techniques is one of several approaches. The article commences with a comprehensive overview of the most widely used dynamic reduction methods and then introduces performance metrics for assessing their efficacies in the context of digital twins. The paper additionally includes a detailed mathematical derivation of the state-space representation for reduced-order finite element models. The state-space representation of the reduced finite element models facilitates their export to problem-solving environments for dynamic analysis. The state-space models are eventually solved utilizing the built-in libraries of numerical solvers in textual and graphical programming platforms. In addition, the article identifies the set of solvers that best suit the simulation of virtual models for off-road vehicles. This article also includes an evaluation of the simulation results for digital models with modes ranging from 0 to 30 Hz. In addition, the article demonstrates the lower bound of the frequency range necessary and sufficient to be retained in off-road vehicle virtual models. Finally, the paper presents the simulation outcomes for digital models of commercial off-road vehicles with custom-built virtual modules of powertrain, electrical, and control systems in a problem-solving environment.

As séries televisivas estadunidenses circulam no Brasil há bastante tempo. Contudo, nos últimos vinte anos, observa-se uma mudança no status de legitimidade dessas produções estrangeiras. Em decorrência disso, há a emergência de inúmeras comunidades de fãs voltadas para essas produções. Assim como em outros fandoms, os fãs de narrativas seriadas produzem variados tipos de materiais, como fanfics, fanarts e memes de internet. A partir disso, este artigo tem como objetivo investigar quais são as semelhanças e as diferenças que memes circulados em fandoms de narrativas seriadas distintas carregam entre si. Para isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa de inspiração etnográfica em três comunidades de fãs, cada uma voltada para uma série diferente. Entre junho de 2018 e maio de 2019, os memes circulados pelos sujeitos dentro dos fandoms foram observados, buscando identificar aqueles que apresentavam referências intertextuais com elementos de outras narrativas seriadas. Argumenta-se que os memes seriam uma importante ferramenta para a circulação das ficções seriadas estadunidenses no Brasil e para as dinâmicas de sociabilidade dos fãs brasileiros, contribuindo para a expansão do universo narrativo e influenciando a experiência do consumo midiático. Por fim, constata-se um intenso uso de intertextualidade, embora as produções midiáticas referenciadas nas três comunidades sejam distintas.

Fast and accurate taxonomic identification of invasive trans-located ladybird beetle species is essential to prevent significant impacts on biological communities, ecosystem functions, and agricultural business economics. Therefore, in this work we propose a two-step automatic detector for ladybird beetles in random environment images as the first stage towards an automated classification system. First, an image processing module composed of a saliency map representation, simple linear iterative clustering superpixels segmentation, and active contour methods allowed us to generate bounding boxes with possible ladybird beetles locations within an image. Subsequently, a deep convolutional neural network-based classifier selects only the bounding boxes with ladybird beetles as the final output. This method was validated on a 2, 300 ladybird beetle image data set from Ecuador and Colombia obtained from the iNaturalist project. The proposed approach achieved an accuracy score of 92% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.977 for the bounding box generation and classification tasks. These successful results enable the proposed detector as a valuable tool for helping specialists in the ladybird beetle detection problem.

Universities are coming under increasing pressure to re-invent the way that engineering is taught in order to produce graduates that are capable of meeting the skills needs of the country’s industries. This paper described an active project where Design Thinking (DT) methodology is being applied in a novel way to Engineering Curriculum Development. Enterprise partners from a range of different manufacturing sectors participated in a series of Curriculum Development workshops and the results were cross referenced with subjects taught on existing engineering programmes internationally. This process highlighted the need for increased training in Lean, 6-Sigma, transversal and soft skills competencies, and the need to review how and when content is delivered. A survey was developed from the results of the workshops and sent out to a larger cohort of industry contacts for feedback on the proposed Engineering curriculum. Design Thinking methodology has helped ensure our customers’ needs are met by building the curriculum framework around competencies identified by both industry and academia while ensuring the students engage in a significant learning experience through experiential and applied learning using the latest immersive technologies.

Resumen El presente artículo tiene por objetivo analizar la descentralización evaluativa como una práctica democratizadora orientada a la participación y al fortalecimiento de los aprendizajes de los estudiantes. Desde una perspectiva interpretativa, se realiza una selección de la literatura especializada, considerando como criterios de revisión el rol de los agentes evaluativos, la autorregulación del aprendizaje y la descentralización evaluativa. El argumento central sostiene que la descentralización evaluativa consolida las prácticas reflexivas, críticas y autocríticas asociadas a los procesos de aprendizaje. Se concluye que es fundamental consolidar procedimientos de autoevaluación, coevaluación y evaluación de pares, con la finalidad de construir una evaluación como un espacio de negociación de significados e intersubjetividades que contribuyen a la creación de una cultura evaluativa focalizada en el progreso de los aprendizajes significativos y en la construcción de un estudiante más consciente de sí mismo.

Este artigo visa debater sobre a expansão da Netflix em mercados periféricos, tendo em vista que, nos últimos anos, a empresa estadunidense tem investido em produções locais. Considerando as mudanças nos fluxos globais de produtos televisivos, serão analisadas as estratégias utilizadas pelo serviço de streaming no México, Brasil e Coreia do Sul. Observa-se que esses territórios são importantes mercados regionais e, por isso, a empresa aplica diversas táticas: desde parcerias com emissoras locais e descontos na assinatura, até a produção de séries focadas em corrupção ou que acionam códigos de nostalgia. Nesse processo, a Netflix se mostra disposta a desafiar os conglomerados midiáticos locais.

Resumen Los lipomas son tumores benignos compuestos por adipocitos maduros. Si bien representan la neoplasia más común en el cuerpo humano, su aparición en la región de la cabeza y el cuello es relativamente rara. No muestra predilección por sexo y afecta a individuos en la cuarta década de vida. Clínicamente, puede observarse un aumento de volumen nodular, de consistencia blanda y superficie lisa. Su etiopatogenia aún es desconocida, aunque algunos autores han sugerido factores endócrinos, inflamatorios, hereditarios y traumáticos. El diagnóstico se realiza a través de la evaluación clínica, con la ayuda de pruebas de imagen como la tomografía computarizada y la resonancia magnética. Sin embargo, solo puede ser confirmado mediante análisis histopatológico de la lesión, considerado el examen por excelencia. El tratamiento de los lipomas y todas sus variantes consiste en la extirpación quirúrgica total, con lo cual se disminuye la posibilidad de recidivas, que es rara de por sí. El objetivo de esta publicación es informar un caso clínico de lipoma localizado en la región de la mucosa yugal, con extirpación quirúrgica completa de la lesión de manera ambulatoria. Palabras clave: Lipomas, neoplasias, procedimientos quirúrgicos ambulatorios. Abstract Lipomas are benign tumors composed of mature adipocytes. Although they represent the most common neoplasia in the human body, their occurrence in the head and neck region is relatively rare. Regardless of gender, they affect individuals from the fourth decade of life on. Clinically, an increase of the nodular volume with softened consistency and smooth surface can be observed. Although its etiopathogenesis is still uncertain, some authors have suggested endocrinal, inflammatory, hereditary and traumatic factors. The diagnosis is made through clinical evaluation, with the aid of imaging examinations, such as computerized tomography and magnetic resonance. However, it can only be confirmed through the histopathological analysis of the lesion, which is considered the gold standard examination. The treatment of the lipomas and all their variations consists of complete surgical excision, thus diminishing the possibility of recurrence, which in turn is rare. The aim of this publication is to report a clinical case of lipoma, located in the jugal mucosa region and treated through complete surgical removal of the lesion on an outpatient basis. In this study, the use of compressed and liquefied natural gas is evaluated for heavy-duty passengers (HDPV) and freight vehicles (HDFV). The evaluation is conducted considering the socioeconomic and vehicle fleet characteristics of Colombia. The energy consumption, the CO2, and the pollutant emissions of a baseline and four natural gas penetration scenarios are analyzed. The results show that the inclusion of natural gas reduces the energy consumption per capita of the HDPV and HDFV by up to 40% by 2050. Furthermore, PM2.5 emissions per capita are reduced up to 77% for HDPV and 90% for HDFV, while CO emissions per capita decreased by 82%. Additionally, the technological renovation of HDFV emerges as an effective way to reduce pollutant emissions in the medium term. The establishment of strategies to make HDFV cleaner and more efficient is imperative for the long term. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the influence of the gross domestic product per capita (GDPc) over the indicators analyzed. The results show that higher GDPc demands more ambitious actions to decarbonize the transportation sector, since a considerable increase in energy consumption and emissions from heavy-duty vehicles is identified.
