The Mediterranean Sea is a prominent climate-change hot spot, with many socioeconomically vital coastal areas being the most vulnerable targets for maritime safety, diverse met-ocean hazards and marine pollution. Providing an unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution at wide coastal areas, high-frequency radars (HFRs) have been steadily gaining recognition as an effective land-based remote sensing technology for continuous monitoring of the surface circulation, increasingly waves and occasionally winds. HFR measurements have boosted the thorough scientific knowledge of coastal processes, also fostering a broad range of applications, which has promoted their integration in coastal ocean observing systems worldwide, with more than half of the European sites located in the Mediterranean coastal areas. In this work, we present a review of existing HFR data multidisciplinary science-based applications in the Mediterranean Sea, primarily focused on meeting end-user and science-driven requirements, addressing regional challenges in three main topics: (i) maritime safety, (ii) extreme hazards and (iii) environmental transport process. Additionally, the HFR observing and monitoring regional capabilities in the Mediterranean coastal areas required to underpin the underlying science and the further development of applications are also analyzed. The outcome of this assessment has allowed us to provide a set of recommendations for future improvement prospects to maximize the contribution to extending science-based HFR products into societally relevant downstream services to support blue growth in the Mediterranean coastal areas, helping to meet the UN's Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the EU's Green Deal goals., peer-reviewed

Due to the semi-enclosed nature of the Mediterranean Sea, natural disasters and anthropogenic activities impose stronger pressures on its coastal ecosystems than in any other sea of the world. With the aim of responding adequately to science priorities and societal challenges, littoral waters must be effectively monitored with high-frequency radar (HFR) systems. This land-based remote sensing technology can provide, in near-real time, fine-resolution maps of the surface circulation over broad coastal areas, along with reliable directional wave and wind information. The main goal of this work is to showcase the current status of the Mediterranean HFR network and the future roadmap for orchestrated actions. Ongoing collaborative efforts and recent progress of this regional alliance are not only described but also connected with other European initiatives and global frameworks, highlighting the advantages of this cost-effective instrument for the multi-parameter monitoring of the sea state. Coordinated endeavors between HFR operators from different multi-disciplinary institutions are mandatory to reach a mature stage at both national and regional levels, striving to do the following: (i) harmonize deployment and maintenance practices; (ii) standardize data, metadata, and quality control procedures; (iii) centralize data management, visualization, and access platforms; and (iv) develop practical applications of societal benefit that can be used for strategic planning and informed decision-making in the Mediterranean marine environment. Such fit-for-purpose applications can serve for search and rescue operations, safe vessel navigation, tracking of marine pollutants, the monitoring of extreme events, the investigation of transport processes, and the connectivity between offshore waters and coastal ecosystems. Finally, future prospects within the Mediterranean framework are discussed along with a wealth of socioeconomic, technical, and scientific challenges to be faced during the implementation of this integrated HFR regional network., This study has been partially developed in the framework of the Interreg MED Strategic Project SHAREMED, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the funding program Interreg MED 2014–2020. In the Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea), during monitoring of Production Water (PW) discharged from offshore platforms, high contamination levels of metals, PAH, and aliphatic hydrocarbons are detected in the sediment close to some installations. Here, we investigate for the first time, the transport and fate of the total suspended solids (TSS) associated with PW discharged by selected platforms, considering the separation of particulate matter from the water plume. We apply a 3D hydrodynamic model and a Lagrangian module to simulate the dispersion of PW suspended substances, then we relate the numerical results to the sediment contamination measured data. The TSS released with PW determines a negligible contribution along the water column and seems poorly related to the anomalies observed in the sediment contamination levels. This approach paves the way to assess the potential risks arising from TSS discharged with the PW on marine ecosystems and to optimize the environmental monitoring tools.

This proof-of-concept study integrates the surface currents measured by high-frequency coastal radars with plankton time-series data collected at a fixed sampling point from the Mediterranean Sea (MareChiara Long Term Ecological Research site in the Gulf of Naples) to characterize the spatial origin of phytoplankton assemblages and to scrutinize the processes ruling their dynamics. The phytoplankton community generally originated from the coastal waters whereby species succession was mainly regulated by biological factors (life-cycle processes, species-specific physiological performances and inter-specific interactions). Physical factors, e.g. the alternation between coastal and offshore waters and the horizontal mixing, were also important drivers of phytoplankton dynamics promoting diversity maintenance by i) advecting species from offshore and ii) diluting the resident coastal community so as to dampen resource stripping by dominant species and thereby increase the numerical importance of rarer species. Our observations highlight the resilience of coastal communities, which may favour their persistence over time and the prevalence of successional events over small time and space scales. Although coastal systems may act differently from one another, our findings provide a conceptual framework to address physical–biological interactions occurring in coastal basins, which can be generalised to other areas.

Surface gravity waves retrieved by a network of HF (High Frequency) radars and measured in situ by an ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) current meter connected to an elastic beacon were used to carry out a multiple-year characterization of the wave field of the Gulf of Naples (south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea, western Mediterranean). The aim of the work was to create a climatology of the study area and to demonstrate the potential of an integrated platform for coastal studies. The patterns recorded by the different instruments were in agreement with the wave climatology of the southern Tyrrhenian Sea as well as with previous scores for the same area. The results presented in this work also highlight seasonal and interannual consistency in the wave patterns for each site. In a wider context, this study demonstrates the potential of HF radars as long-term monitoring tools of the wave field in coastal basins, and supports the development of integrated observatories to address large-scale scientific challenges such as coastal ocean dynamics and the impact of global change on the local dynamics.

The Gulf of Naples is a coastal area in the south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea (western Mediterranean). Zones of great environmental and touristic value coexist in this area with one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean Sea, industrial settlements and many other pollution sources. In such an environment, water renewal mechanisms are crucial for maintaining the ecological status of the coastal waters. In this paper, we focus on the water exchange between the interior of the Gulf and the neighbouring open Tyrrhenian Sea. The surface dynamics of the Gulf have been investigated based on measurements carried out with a high-frequency (HF) radar system. The vertical component of the current field has been provided by the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) model of ocean circulation. We present the results of a one-year-long analysis of data and simulation results relative to the year 2009. Inshore/offshore exchanges were assessed by looking at the zonal component of the surface and subsurface current field across a transect representing a sort of threshold between the interior of the Gulf and the open sea. This also allows for the reconstruction of the short-term origin of waters found inside the Gulf in the different forcing and circulation conditions.

Several different chemical products are used on oil platforms to aid oil-water separation during the production process. These chemicals may enter into the sea by means of production water (PW), the main discharge derived from oil and gas offshore platforms. Consequently, toxic effects may occur in the marine environment, causing reductions in wildlife numbers, degrading ecosystem functions and threatening human health. For most of these chemicals, environmental toxicity and safety thresholds in marine ecosystems have not been fully investigated as yet. In this work, a numerical-ecotoxicological approach is proposed to assess the potential environmental risk associated with the discharge of five oilfield production chemicals (deoiler, scale inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor, catalyst, dehydrating agent) from a platform in the southern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea). Their concentrations in the seawater are numerically predicted, under different seasonal conditions, starting from the real concentrations used during the production process. The predicted concentrations are then evaluated in terms of possible toxic effects in order to assess the potential risk of oilfield production chemicals discharged into the sea.

The toxicity of produced formation water (PFW) originating from four natural gas production platforms located in the Adriatic Sea (Italy), and of seawater samples collected near these installations is assessed by means of bioassays with Brachionus plicatilis, with the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana and with Paracentrotus lividus. The toxicological response of these specimens was evaluated in order to identify the most sensitive one, in the consumer compartment, and to design a bioassay battery specific for samples collected in the surroundings of a gas platform. Larval mortality of rotifers, larval immobilization of crustaceans, fertilization success/failure (sperm cell test) and larval (pluteus) development success/failure (embryo toxicity test) of sea urchins were taken as ecotoxicological endpoints. The PFW sampled on two platforms resulted toxic, while no toxicity was recorded in seawater samples collected in the vicinity of the platforms, even in coincidence with the PFW discharge operations. The species and bioassays employed have shown different responses to PFW: P. lividus turned out to be more sensitive than A. franciscana and B. plicatilis. In particular, the embryo toxicity test showed a higher toxicity than the sperm cell test.

The calanoid Clausocalanus furcatus and the cyclopoid Oithona plumifera are species dominating the copepod assemblage in oligotrophic environments but displaying contrasting swimming behaviour. C. furcatus moves almost continuously along very convoluted trajectories, while O. plumifera sinks slowly with occasional brief relocating jumps. To evaluate the efficiency of such opposing behaviour in encountering potential prey, the swimming performances of both species are here simulated with a Lagrangian, individual-based approach, implemented to simulate the realistic motion and perceptive fields of the two species. For each modelled swimming trajectory, we calculate the number of realised encounters and the associated search efficiency in uniform and patchy distributions of virtual prey. C. furcatus will perform better than O. plumifera in terms of realised encounters, but its search efficiency will be lower owing to the peculiar motion behaviour and to the shape and extension of the perceptive field. Despite these differences, these two species do co-exist in food diluted areas, thus indicating alternative strategies to successfully thrive in pelagic oligotrophic environments.

An individual-based model is presented which describes the spatial and temporal evolution of phytoplankton growth in terms of a Lagrangian ensemble of cells affected by various physical and biological forcing factors. The motion of cells develops according to a turbulent velocity field which simulates the Antarctic mixed layer during the summer. The cell growth is a function of the irradiance regime, nutrient availability and the vertical position of the individual with respect to the other cells (in order to evaluate the self-shading effect). The values of photosynthetic parameters used to simulate the photophysiological response of the organisms are derived from measurements collected in the Ross Sea. In contrast to previous individual-based descriptions, all the physical and biological processes involved are explicitly reproduced in their dynamical features. Coupling different mixing levels with photoacclimation strategies leads to a wide range of photophysiological responses which underline the role of individual physiological histories in determining the growth of the population as a whole. Simulated photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll a concentrations and integrated primary production correspond closely to in situ data and confirm that photoacclimation to low irradiance and strong mixing regimes may be considered as crucial factors in the photosynthetic performance of Antarctic phytoplankton.

The survival of zooplanktonic organisms is determined by their capability of moving in a fluid environment, trading off between the necessities of finding prey and avoiding predators. In previous numerical experiments, we concentrated on the relationship between natatorial modality and encounter success of a virtual copepod swimming in the presence of prey distributed either in patches or uniformly in the environment. In this contribution, we extend this simulation framework to the encounter with chaetognaths, the primary copepod predators, considering different motion rules as a proxy of different swimming strategies and looking at the influence of the concentration of predators and the size of their detection radius in posing a risk on copepod survival. The outcomes of our simulations indicate that more convoluted trajectories are more vulnerable to predator encounter while straighter motions reduce predation risk. Our results are then complemented with those obtained in our previous studies to perform a general cost-benefit analysis of zooplankton motion.

Zooplankton encounter rates are dependent not only on both sensory and swimming performances of the organisms, but also on the distribution pattern of food particles. Increasing evidences indicate that, in natural conditions, phytoplankton is often aggregated in thin layers. In the present contribution we investigate the concomitant effects of motion complexity and habitat fragmentation on the number of encounters realised by virtual continuously moving copepods adopting different motion strategies. Our simulated organisms move in an environment characterised by the presence of thin patches of phytoplankton, and their swim follows five motion rules (pure random walk, correlated random walk with three different time scales, self-avoiding random walk), each characterised by a typical value of the three-dimensional fractal dimension D3D. Compared to a uniform distribution, for a given motion rule the clustering of prey particles increases the variance of encounters, while no remarkable effect is reported in the average number of particles intercepted. These results broaden our understanding of the behavioural efficiency in freely swimming zooplankters and improve our knowledge of the functioning of aquatic systems.

In marine ecosystems ecological and environmental conditions continuously change, possibly supporting the wide range of phytoplankton species coexisting in aquatic environments. Phytoplankton communities are not homogeneously distributed in the water column due to the spatial and temporal variability of turbulent mixing and the concurrent biological response. In this paper an individual-based model (Lagrangian method) simulating the basic physiology of two coexisting phytoplankton species has been developed. The species, sharing the same availability of light and nutrient resource, are characterized by different photo-physiological parameters. The spatial and temporal evolution of turbulent mixing is simulated introducing vertical profiles of measured eddy diffusivity. Three case studies have been examined to analyze the role of environment–individual interactions in determining bloom conditions for both the selected species. The organisms experience recurrent fluctuations of light, temperature, and nutrient concentration gradients, due to the turbulent mixing in the water column, which have significant effects on the growth of the phytoplankton species. In all the numerical experiments, the temporal and spatial variability of different forcings do not support the prevalence of one species over the other over the time scale typical of a phytoplankton bloom. A well mixed water column favours the growth of both the populations while a variable mixing regime limits their growth reducing the photophysiological differences between the species.

Produced formation waters (PFWs), a by-product of both oil and gas extraction, are separated from hydrocarbons onboard oil platforms and then discharged into the sea through submarine outfalls. The dispersion of PFWs into the environment may have a potential impact on marine ecosystems. We reproduce the initial PFW-seawater mixing process by means of the UM3 model applied to offshore natural gas platforms currently active in the Northern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea). Chemical analyses lead to the identification of a chemical tracer (diethylene glycol) which enables us to follow the fate of PFWs into receiving waters. The numerical simulations are realized in different seasonal conditions using both measured oceanographic data and tracer concentrations. The numerical results show the spatial and temporal plume development in different stratification and ambient current conditions. The analytical approach measures concentrations of the diethylene glycol at a maximum sampling distance of 25 m. The results show a good agreement between field observations and model predictions in the near-field area. The integration of numerical results with chemical analyses also provides new insight to plan and optimize PFW monitoring and discharge.

The encounter of individuals-prey, predators and mates-living in the surrounding environment is a fundamental process in the life of an organism. Along with the sensory abilities, this process will be regulated by the movement rules adopted by the individual. In this work we discuss the encounter-enhancement effect due to different natatorial modes by calculating the number of encounters realised by differently convoluted trajectories in two homogeneous distributions of particles. Using numerically generated trajectories representative of specific swimming behaviour, we demonstrate that high values of three-dimensional fractal dimension D(3D)(>1.9) are beneficial only at high concentration, whereas at low concentration less tortuous tracks (D(3D) approximately 1.5) are almost equally efficient. In the light of our results it is possible to better understand the behavioural adaptations evolved by individuals to thrive in their environment.
