The study aim was to identify the experience of exclusive breastfeeding and its relationship with the situation of intimate partner violence from a qualitative approach. The study was carried out in a maternity hospital located in Brazil. The participants were 21 puerperal women, who were in a situation of intimate partner violence in the puerperium and who had at least 180 days postpartum. The quantitative data (the women's sociodemographic, economic, family, and obstetric status) were used for describing the participants. Whereas, the qualitative data were collected through an open interview and recorded in a single moment, they reflected on the experience of breastfeeding in situations of violence by their intimate partners. The qualitative data was treated using the Method of Sense Interpretation; and Male Domination and Symbolic Power, by Pierre Bourdieu, were the theoretical frameworks chosen to discuss the concept of gender in social relationships. Most of the participants were young, black/brown-skinned, had a mean of 10 years of study, all suffered some type of violence by their partners during postpartum, and only one woman followed exclusive breastfeeding until six months. The central category, entitled: “Intimate partner violence and its repercussions on the experience of exclusive breastfeeding”, identified that intimate partner violence impacted in maintaining exclusive breastfeeding, interruption of latching, in addition to affecting the relationship between mother and child. The originality of the theme must be discussed in the academic, practical, governmental, and research spheres in order to strengthen the notification and confrontation of violence and to advocate for exclusive breastfeeding even in adverse contexts. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar la experiencia de lactancia materna exclusiva y su relación con la situación de violencia de pareja desde un enfoque cualitativo. El estudio se llevó a cabo en una maternidad ubicada en Brasil. Participaron 21 puérperas, que se encontraban en situación de violencia de pareja en el puerperio y que tenían al menos 180 días de posparto. Los datos cuantitativos (situación sociodemográfica, económica, familiar y obstétrica de las mujeres) fueron utilizados para la descripción de las participantes. Mientras que, datos cualitativos fueron recolectados a través de una entrevista abierta y registrados en un solo momento, reflexionaron sobre la experiencia de amamantar en situaciones de violencia por parte de sus compañeros íntimos. Los datos cualitativos fueron tratados mediante el Método de Interpretación del Sentido; y Dominación masculina y poder simbólico, de Pierre Bourdieu, fueron los marcos teóricos elegidos para discutir el concepto de género en las relaciones sociales. La mayoría de las participantes eran jóvenes, de piel negra/morena, con una media de 10 años de estudio, todas sufrieron algún tipo de violencia por parte de sus compañeros durante el posparto, y sólo una mujer siguió con lactancia materna exclusiva hasta los seis meses. La categoría central, titulada: “Violencia del compañero íntimo y sus repercusiones en la experiencia de la lactancia materna exclusiva”, identificó que la violencia del compañero íntimo impactó en el mantenimiento de la lactancia materna exclusiva, interrupción del enganche, además de afectar la relación entre madre e hijo. La originalidad del tema debe ser discutida en los ámbitos académico, práctico, gubernamental y de investigación para fortalecer la notificación y el enfrentamiento de la violencia y abogar por la lactancia materna exclusiva incluso en contextos adversos. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar a experiência do aleitamento materno exclusivo e sua relação com a situação de violência por parceiro íntimo a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa. O estudo foi realizado em uma maternidade localizada no Brasil. As participantes foram 21 puérperas, que se encontravam em situação de violência por parceiro íntimo no puerpério e que tiveram pelo menos 180 dias de pós-parto. Os dados quantitativos (condição sociodemográfica, econômica, familiar e obstétrica das mulheres) foram utilizados para a caracterização das participantes. Enquanto, os dados qualitativos foram coletados por meio de entrevista aberta e gravada em um único momento, refletiram sobre a vivência da amamentação em situação de violência por parte de seus parceiros íntimos. Os dados qualitativos foram tratados pelo Método de Interpretação do Sentido; e Dominação Masculina e Poder Simbólico, de Pierre Bourdieu, foram os referenciais teóricos escolhidos para discutir o conceito de gênero nas relações sociais. A maioria das participantes eram jovem, preta/parda, com média de 10 anos de estudo, todas sofreram algum tipo de violência por parte do parceiro no pós-parto e apenas uma mulher seguiu aleitamento materno exclusivo até os seis meses. A categoria central, intitulada: “Violência por parceiro íntimo e suas repercussões na vivência do aleitamento materno exclusivo”, identificou que a violência por parceiro íntimo impactou na manutenção do aleitamento materno exclusivo, interrupção da pega, além de afetar a relação entre mãe e filho. A originalidade do tema deve ser discutida nas esferas acadêmica, prática, governamental e de pesquisa para fortalecer a notificação e o enfrentamento da violência e defender o aleitamento materno exclusivo mesmo em contextos adversos.

Objetivo: compreender os significados atribuídos à rede de suporte social de mulheres em aleitamento materno e em situação de violência por parceiro íntimo. Método: estudo qualitativo, realizado com 21 mulheres, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e de dados analisados pelo Método da Interpretação dos Sentidos à luz do referencial conceitual de Rede de Suporte Social. Resultados: todas as mulheres sofreram violência pelo parceiro no puerpério e apenas uma delas manteve o aleitamento materno exclusivo até 180 dias pós-parto. Na análise, emergiu a categoria intitulada “A ação da rede de suporte social diante do aleitamento materno no contexto de violência por parceiro íntimo”, com duas subcategorias: “Rede de suporte interpessoal” e “Rede de suporte institucional”. Na rede interpessoal, o companheiro foi pouco referido, em contrapartida, houve maior participação de outras mulheres. Na rede institucional, ficaram evidentes a não resolutividade e as ações centradas no caráter biológico. Conclusões: a busca por ajuda na rede interpessoal sobressaiu-se em comparação à rede institucional, tanto no que se refere à questão da violência quanto à amamentação e às ações a ela relacionadas, em sua maior parte, pouco efetivas, caracterizadas por aconselhamentos e encaminhamentos. Objetivo: comprender los significados atribuidos a la red de apoyo social de las mujeres que amamantan y atraviesan situaciones de violencia por parte de una pareja íntima. Método: estudio cualitativo, realizado con 21 mujeres, a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y datos analizados por el Método de Interpretación de los Sentidos a la luz del marco conceptual de la Red de Apoyo Social. Resultados: todas las mujeres sufrieron violencia por parte de la pareja en el puerperio y solo una de ellas mantuvo la lactancia materna exclusiva hasta 180 días después del parto. En el análisis, emergió la categoría titulada “La acción de la red de apoyo social frente a la lactancia materna en el contexto de la violencia por parte de la pareja íntima”, con dos subcategorías: “Red de apoyo interpersonal” y “Red de apoyo institucional”. En la red interpersonal, la pareja fue poco mencionada, y, por otro lado, hubo una mayor participación de otras mujeres. En la red institucional, la falta de resolución y las acciones centradas en el carácter biológico fueron evidentes. Conclusiones: se destacó la búsqueda de ayuda en la red interpersonal si se la compara con la red institucional, tanto en relación al tema de la violencia como a la lactancia materna y/o acciones a ella relacionadas, en su mayoría ineficaces, caracterizadas por protocolos y derivaciones. Objective: to understand the meanings attributed to the social support network of women breastfeeding and in situations of violence by an intimate partner. Method: a qualitative study, carried out with 21 women, through semi-structured interviews and data analyzed by the Method of Interpretation of the Senses in the light of the conceptual framework of Social Support Network. Results: all women suffered violence by the partner in the puerperium and only one of them maintained exclusive breastfeeding until 180 days postpartum. In the analysis, the category entitled “The action of the social support network in the face of breastfeeding in the context of intimate partner violence” emerged, with two subcategories: “Interpersonal support network” and “Institutional support network”. In the interpersonal network, the partner was little mentioned, on the other hand, there was a greater participation of other women. In the institutional network, non-resolution and actions centered on biological character were evident. Conclusions: the search for help in the interpersonal network stood out in comparison to the institutional network, both with regard to the issue of violence and breastfeeding and the actions related to it, mostly ineffective, characterized by counseling and referrals.

Objective: to reflect on the practice of breastfeeding in a context of intimate partner violence and its importance in professional practice. Method: this is a qualitative, descriptive study, of the type reflexive analysis, developed through a narrative review of the literature. Data were collected in the category: "Intimate partner violence and the repercussions on the practice of breastfeeding". Results: repercussions of this violence are observed in the beginning and in the maintenance of breastfeeding. Emphasis is placed on the fragility of women's psychological and physical conditions, and early weaning is also seen in order to protect the child from violence. It is added, however, that there is no special attention paid to this event by health. Conclusion: it was observed that intimate partner violence is present in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle with repercussions on maternal and child health, including breastfeeding. However, the low visibility of the problem in the academic and care areas is highlighted. It is hoped that this study will contribute to reflections on the theme and impel new questions, researches and transformations in the model of care and reception. RESUMO Objetivo: refletir sobre a pratica do aleitamento materno num contexto de violencia por parceiro intimo e sua importância na pratica profissional . Metodo : trata-se de estudo qualitativo, descritivo, do tipo analise reflexiva, desenvolvido por meio de uma revisao narrativa da literatura. Reuniram-se os dados na categoria: “ A violencia por parceiro intimo e as repercussoes na pratica do aleitamento materno ”. Resultados: observam-se repercussoes dessa violencia no inicio e na manutencao da amamentacao. Destaca-se a fragilidade das condicoes psicologicas e fisicas da mulher e visualizam-se, inclusive, quadros de desmame precoce a fim de proteger a crianca da violencia. Acrescenta-se, no entanto, que nao se nota, por parte da saude, uma atencao especial diante desse evento . Conclusao : constatou-se que a violencia por parceiro intimo esta presente no ciclo gravidico-puerperal com repercussoes na saude materno-infantil, inclusive, no aleitamento materno. Salienta-se, entretanto, a baixa visibilidade da problematica nas areas academica e assistencial. Espera-se que este estudo contribua para reflexoes sobre a tematica e impulsione novos questionamentos, pesquisas e transformacoes no modelo de acolhimento e cuidado. RESUMEN Objetivo: reflexionar sobre la practica de la lactancia materna en un contexto de violencia por companero intimo y su importancia en la practica profesional. Metodo: se trata de un estudio cualitativo, descriptivo, del tipo analisis reflexivo, desarrollado por medio de una revision narrativa de la literatura. Se reunieron los datos en la categoria: " La violencia por companero intimo y las repercusiones en la practica de la lactancia materna". Resultados: se observan repercusiones de esta violencia al inicio y en el mantenimiento de la lactancia. Se destaca la fragilidad de las condiciones psicologicas y fisicas de la mujer y se visualizan, incluso, cuadros de destete precoz a fin de proteger al nino de la violencia. Se anade, sin embargo, que no se nota, por parte de la salud, una atencion especial ante ese evento. Conclusion: se constato que la violencia por companero intimo esta presente en el ciclo embarazo-puerperio con repercusiones en la salud materno-infantil, inclusive, en la lactancia materna. Se destaca, sin embargo, la baja visibilidad de la problematica en las areas academica y asistencial. Se espera que este estudio contribuya a reflexiones sobre la tematica e impulse nuevos cuestionamientos, investigaciones y transformaciones en el modelo de acogida y cuidado. The premature aging (photoaging) of skin characterized by wrinkles, a leathery texture and mottled pigmentation is a well-documented consequence of exposure to sunlight. UVA is an important risk factor for human cancer also associated with induction of inflammation, immunosuppression, photoaging and melanogenesis. Although herbal compounds are commonly used as photoprotectants against the harmful effects of UVA, the mechanisms involved in the photodamage are not precisely known. In this study, we investigated the effects of Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis mil) on the protection against UVA-modulated cell killing of HaCaT keratinocytes. Aloe Vera exhibited the remarkable ability of reducing both in vitro and in vivo photodamage, even though it does not have anti-radical properties. Interestingly, the protection conferred by Aloe Vera was associated with the maintenance of membrane integrity in both mimetic membranes and intracellular organelles. The increased lysosomal stability led to a decrease in lipofuscinogenesis and cell death. This study explains why Aloe Vera extracts offer protection against photodamage at a cellular level in both the UV and visible spectra, leading to its beneficial use as a supplement in protective dermatological formulations.

A violência contra a mulher tem se revelado uma importante questão de saúde pública, pois além de promover o aumento de morbidade e mortalidade quando relacionada à saúde da mulher, tem o potencial de provocar conseqüências ainda mais desastrosas, como ocorre na violência durante a gravidez, comprometendo também a saúde de seus descendentes. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a violência doméstica entre as mulheres que receberam assistência ao parto em uma maternidade de baixo risco de Ribeirão Preto - SP. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo do tipo transversal, realizado na Maternidade do Complexo Aeroporto (Mater). A amostra constituiu-se de 547 mulheres que receberam assistência ao parto no período de julho a setembro de 2006. Os dados foram coletados no puerpério, durante a internação no alojamento conjunto, em local privativo e sem a presença de acompanhantes, após assinatura do Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido. O instrumento utilizado para a coleta de dados foi um questionário contendo 41 perguntas, elaborado para ser utilizado em serviços de saúde. Os dados foram processados e analisados no programa Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS, versão 11.5). Na análise, realizou-se distribuição simples de freqüência, Teste Qui-quadrado (X2) ou Teste Exato de Fisher para verificar a associação entre as variáveis e Razão de Chance (RC) e intervalo de confiança (IC) de 95% para estimar a associação. Observou-se que 58,5% das mulheres entrevistadas sofreram algum tipo de agressão ao longo da vida pelo parceiro e 19,6% sofreram durante a gestação. Em relação à violência perpetrada por outras pessoas, notou-se que 52,3% sofreram algum tipo de agressão alguma vez na vida e 15,0% sofreram durante a gestação. A prevalência de mulheres que sofreram violência, alguma vez na vida, pelo parceiro foi maior entre as que: eram solteiras, separadas, divorciadas ou viúvas; não tinham um relacionamento na época ou tinham parceiros, mas não moravam juntos; pertenciam aos estratos econômicos D e E; engravidaram no mínimo três vezes; tiveram aborto; consumiram bebida alcoólica pelo menos uma vez por semana antes ou durante a gestação; usaram drogas ilícitas alguma vez na vida; agrediram fisicamente alguém; referiram medo de alguém próximo; se sentiam controladas pelo parceiro; viram o companheiro alcoolizado alguma vez durante a gestação e referiram que o companheiro usava ou usou drogas ilícitas. Além dos fatores de risco acima relacionados, a violência doméstica pelo parceiro durante o período gestacional também foi maior entre as mulheres que: consideravam-se negras ou pardas; iniciaram a vida sexual antes dos 15 anos e relataram que o companheiro usava bebida alcoólica pelo menos uma vez por semana. Portanto, o estudo comprovou a alta magnitude da violência doméstica entre as mulheres que receberam assistência ao parto em uma maternidade de baixo risco em Ribeirão Preto - SP e, dessa forma, espera-se que os resultados possam contribuir para uma maior visibilidade do problema, enfatizar a necessidade de se desenvolver uma assistência integral e auxiliar no adequado delineamento das políticas de saúde que envolvam a saúde da mulher. Violence against women has revealed to be an important public health issue as, besides leading to increased morbidity and mortality in terms of women\'s health, it has the potential to provoke even more disastrous consequences. This is the case of violence during pregnancy, which also jeopardizes the children\'s health. This study aimed to analyze domestic violence committed against women who received delivery care at a low-risk maternity hospital in Ribeirão Preto - SP. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the Airport Complex Maternity (Mater). The sample consisted of 547 women who received delivery care between July and September 2006. Data were collected in the puerperal period, during hospitalization at the rooming-in unit, in a private space and without the presence of companions, after the signing of the Free and Informed Consent Term. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire with 41 questions, elaborated for usage in health services. Data were processed and analyzed in Statistical Package for the Social Science software (SPSS, version 11.5). The analysis involved simple frequency distribution, the Chi- Square Test (X2) or Fisher\'s Exact Test to check for associations between the variables and a 95% Odds Ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) to estimate the association. It was observed that 58.5% of the interviewed women suffered some kind of aggression by their partner during their life, and 19.6% while pregnant. What violence committed by other people is concerned, it was found that 52.3% suffered some kind of aggression at some point in their life and 15.0% while pregnant. The prevalence of women who suffered violence committed by their partner at some point in their life was higher among: single, separated, divorced or widowed women; without a relationship at that time or with partners, but without living together; who belonged to economic groups D and E; got pregnant at least three times; had an abortion; consumed alcoholic beverages at least once per week before or during the pregnancy; used illicit drugs at some point in their life; physically attacked someone; indicated fear of a close person; felt controlled by their partner; witnessed their partner under the influence of alcohol at some point during the pregnancy and mentioned that their partners used or were using illicit drugs. Besides the above mentioned risk factors, domestic violence committed by the partner during pregnancy was also greater among women who: considered themselves black or mulatto; started sexual life before the age of 15 and mentioned that their partner used alcoholic beverages at least once per week. Thus, the study proved the great extent of domestic violence among women who received delivery care at a low-risk maternity in Ribeirão Preto - SP. Hence, it is expected that the results can contribute to a greater visibility of the problem, emphasize the need to develop integral care and help in the adequate outlining of health policies involving women\'s health.

It is extremely important to identify women living in a violent situation. However, the health sector has not always offered a satisfactory response for the issue. We sought to identify how the health professionals of a maternity perceive and act in view of a violent situation. This is a qualitative research, in which the data were collected through semistructured interviews and subject to thematic analysis. The study group consisted of 12 health professionals from a philanthropic maternity hospital located in Ribeirão Preto, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. It was observed that health professionals characterize violence against women as a severe and important problem in society, caused by and leading to gender inequality. However, professional practice tends towards a biologistic and reductionist approach, which fragments women's health care,justified bythe lack of professional training, institutional support and a multidisciplinary team.

This study results from a systematic review of scientific publications indexed in Medline between 1993 and 2004, aimed at analyzing scientific knowledge about domestic violence and drugs abuse during pregnancy. Nineteen articles were analyzed. These were published in international periodicals, mainly related to the specialty of child health. Most of these were medical periodicals of American origin and all of them published in English. As to study type, 57.9% were descriptive studies and 42.1% theoretical papers. These deal with subjects related to the woman's psychosocial needs, the importance of paternal responsibility in pregnancy, and the risk factors and implications of domestic violence and drugs use on the health of woman and child. This theoretical foundation allows for interventions in this scenario.

O presente estudo advém da revisão sistemática de publicações científicas indexadas no Medline de 1993 a 2004, objetivando analisar o conhecimento científico sobre violência doméstica e abuso de drogas na gestação. Os 19 artigos analisados estão publicados em periódicos internacionais de especialidades relacionadas, predominantemente, à saúde da criança, sendo a maioria da área médica e de origem americana, todos com o idioma inglês. Desses artigos, 57,9% são estudos descritivos e 42,1% trabalhos teóricos. Abordam temas relacionados às necessidades psicossociais da mulher, importância da responsabilidade paterna na gestação, e os fatores de risco e as implicações na saúde da mulher e da criança associados à violência doméstica e ao uso de drogas. Este embasamento teórico possibilita a intervenção neste cenário. Esta fundamentación teórica posibilita intervenir en este escenario.
