Land-based nutrient inputs to the ocean have been linked to increased coastal productivity, subsurface acidification and O2 loss, even in upwelling systems like the Southern California Bight. However, whether eutrophication alters the [environment’s] capacity to support key taxa has yet to be evaluated for this region. Here, we assess the impact of land-based nutrient inputs on the availability of aerobic and calcifying habitat for key pelagic taxa using ocean model simulations. We find that acute, lethal conditions are not commonly induced in epipelagic surface waters, but that sublethal, ecologically relevant changes are pervasive. Land-based nutrient inputs reduce the potential aerobic and calcifier habitat during late summer, when viable habitat is at its seasonal minimum. A region of annually recurring habitat compression is predicted 30 – 90 km from the mainland, southeast of Santa Catalina Island. Here, both aerobic and calcifier habitat is vertically compressed by, on average, 25%, but can be as much as 60%. This effect can be traced to enhanced remineralization of organic matter that originates from the coast. These findings suggest that effects of land-based nutrients are not restricted to chemistry but extend to habitat capacity for multiple taxa of ecological and economic importance. Considerable uncertainty exists, however, in how this habitat compression translates to population-level effects.

The present study proposes an advanced multi-field modeling approach to optimize in silico subcutaneous insulin release. We introduce a generalized fluid-pharmacokinetics framework, integrating syringe injection and subcutaneous permeability, thus advancing a first-of-its-kind computational model of insulin delivery port. The proposed theoretical framework comprises three main elements: (1) a realistic geometry model of a commercial port device and the surrounding subcutaneous tissues; (2) a staggered fluid dynamics model of syringe injection coupled with a multi-compartmental model of insulin absorption within a porous medium; (3) a computational-based device optimization to minimize the onset of lipodystrophies due to multiple injection procedures. A novel tissue lesion model is advanced, linking local subcutaneous pressure levels to altered permeability that comprise accumulation effects due to repeated injections. The computational framework was fine-tuned according to state-of-the-art experimental evidence, and extensive numerical analyses predicted unexplored insulin port devices behaviors thus allowing comparison of computed haematic insulin profiles with those obtained clinically. Accordingly, a vast parametric analysis was performed to identify the optimal conditions that minimize tissue lesions and support prolonged device usage.

There are many potential approaches to marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), of which ocean iron fertilization (OIF) has the longest history of study. However, OIF studies to date were not primarily designed to quantify the durability of carbon (C) storage, nor how wise OIF might be as an mCDR approach. To quantify C sequestration, we introduce a metric called the “centennial tonne,” defined as 1,000 kg of C isolated from atmospheric contact for on average at least 100 years. We present the activities needed to assess OIF from a scientific and technological perspective, and additionally, how it might be responsibly studied and potentially deployed. The five activities include: field studies in the Northeast Pacific; improved modeling for field studies, data assimilation and predictions at larger scales; improvements in monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) for C, and also MRV for tracking ecological and environmental impacts; and developing new iron sources and their delivery, to increase efficiencies and reduce costs. The fifth activity is to understand whether public and community support exists for OIF, and what governance structures might support further research and possible deployment of OIF. This article is written by a multidisciplinary experts group called Exploring Ocean Iron Solutions (ExOIS) that is organized around a responsible code of conduct. Of the mCDR approaches, OIF has the potential to be low cost, scalable, and rapidly deployable. Reducing CO2 emissions must lead the way, but there is also an urgency to decide under what conditions and whether OIF might be deployed or not.

Abstract Emerging fishing activity due to melting ice and poleward species distribution shifts in the rapidly‐warming Arctic Ocean challenges transboundary management and requires proactive governance. A 2021 moratorium on commercial fishing in the Arctic high seas provides a 16‐year runway for improved scientific understanding. Given substantial knowledge gaps, characterizing areas of highest uncertainty is a key first step. Marine ecosystem model ensembles that project future fish distributions could inform management of future Arctic fisheries, but Arctic‐specific variation has not yet been examined for global ensembles. We use the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Intercomparison Project ensemble driven by two Earth System Models (ESMs) under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1‐2.6 and SSP5‐8.5) to illustrate the current state of and uncertainty among biomass projections for the Arctic Ocean over the duration of the moratorium. The models generally project biomass increases in more northern Arctic ecosystems and decreases in southern ecosystems, but wide intra‐model variation exceeds projection means in most cases. The two ESMs show opposite trends for the main environmental drivers. Therefore, these projections are currently insufficient to inform policy actions. Investment in sustained monitoring and improving modeling capacity, especially for sea ice dynamics, is urgently needed. Concurrently, it will be necessary to develop frameworks for making precautionary decisions under continued uncertainty. We conclude that researchers should be transparent about uncertainty, presenting these model projections not as a source of scientific “answers,” but as bounding for plausible, policy‐relevant questions to assess trade‐offs and mitigate risks.

Abstract A key control on the magnitude of coastal eutrophication is the degree to which currents quickly transport nitrogen derived from human sources away from the coast to the open ocean before eutrophication develops. In the Southern California Bight (SCB), an upwelling-dominated eastern boundary current ecosystem, anthropogenic nitrogen inputs increase algal productivity and cause subsurface acidification and oxygen (O $$_{2}$$ 2 ) loss along the coast. However, the extent of anthropogenic influence on eutrophication beyond the coastal band, and the physical transport mechanisms and biogeochemical processes responsible for these effects are still poorly understood. Here, we use a submesoscale-resolving numerical model to document the detailed biogeochemical mass balance of nitrogen, carbon and oxygen, their physical transport, and effects on offshore habitats. Despite management of terrestrial nutrients that has occurred in the region over the last 20 years, coastal eutrophication continues to persist. The input of anthropogenic nutrients promote an increase in productivity, remineralization and respiration offshore, with recurrent O $$_{2}$$ 2 loss and pH decline in a region located 30–90 km from the mainland. During 2013 to 2017, the spatially averaged 5-year loss rate across the Bight was 1.3 mmol m $$^{-3}$$ - 3 O $$_{2}$$ 2 , with some locations losing on average up to 14.2 mmol m $$^{-3}$$ - 3 O $$_{2}$$ 2 . The magnitude of loss is greater than model uncertainty assessed from data-model comparisons and from quantification of intrinsic variability. This phenomenon persists for 4 to 6 months of the year over an area of 27,840 km $$^{2}$$ 2 ( $$\sim$$ ∼ 30% of SCB area). These recurrent features of acidification and oxygen loss are associated with cross-shore transport of nutrients by eddies and plankton biomass and their accumulation and retention within persistent eddies offshore within the SCB.

Background: The retention of foreign bodies inside the body during ludic/sexual procedures or for traumatism represents one of the causes of visits to accident and emergency departments that often requires surgical removal of the foreign body. However, there are cases where the discovery of such foreign bodies takes place after many years, as in patients that are slightly compromised from a neuro-sociological point of view. Case presentation: A 76-year-old male presented to an outpatient urological examination due to an increase in scrotal volume. At the ultrasound check, an acoustic interference from a solid object was detected, for which computed tomography was requested. The computed tomography scan revealed the presence of an elongated metal body in the perineum. The removal of the foreign body in the operating theatre was then scheduled. A 10 cm long stainless-steel nail located within an abscessed foreign body granuloma was identified and removed via a scrotal access. Four days later, a new surgical toilet was performed due to minimal necrosis of the skin flaps. The patient then performed three more dressings in the operating theatre during the following week. Healing took place by secondary intention until a perfect healing of the surgical wound was obtained. Conclusions: Removal of foreign bodies from the perineum in case of infection can be challenging. Careful attention and postoperative dressings are crucial for the success of the case.

Aim:: Intravesical onabotulinum toxin A (BTX) injection is a widely recognized treatment for idiopathic detrusor overactivity (DO) and neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) refractory to adjustments in oral medications.The primary end point of our study was to evaluate patients’ comfort and tolerability with intravesical BTX treatment given in an office-based setting inside a hospital. As a secondary end point, for a subgroup of patients who had previously undergone the procedure in an operating room, we aimed to ascertain if there was any difference in patients’ preferences between the office and operating room settings. Methods:: A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed to evaluate patients’ comfort and tolerability with intravesical BTX treatment given in an office-based setting. It was based on a questionnaire investigating the patients’ overall experience during the procedure and subsequent recovery. Results:: A total of 74 consecutive patients treated between January 2016 and July 2022 were enrolled: 48 males and 26 females; the average age was 57.09 years, ranging from 23–84 years. Among them, 66.2% presented with NDO, and 33.8% with DO. Conclusions:: According to our study, intravesical BTX injections in an office-based setting inside a hospital appear to be a well-tolerated procedure. Most of the patients in our study who experienced both options finally preferred the office setting rather than the operating room. This is an important result, especially if we consider that most patients are required to repeat the treatment over time.

Abstract Climate change is increasing drought severity worldwide. Ocean discharges of municipal wastewater are a target for potable water recycling. Potable water recycling would reduce wastewater volume; however, the effect on mass nitrogen loading is dependent on treatment. In cases where nitrogen mass loading is not altered or altered minimally, this practice has the potential to influence spatial patterns in coastal eutrophication. We apply a physical-biogeochemical numerical ocean model to understand the influence of nitrogen management and potable wastewater recycling on net primary productivity (NPP), pH, and oxygen. We model several theoretical management scenarios by combining dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) reductions from 50 to 85% and recycling from 0 to 90%, applied to 19 generalized wastewater outfalls in the Southern California Bight. Under no recycling, NPP, acidification, and oxygen loss decline with DIN reductions, which simulated habitat volume expansion for pelagic calcifiers and aerobic taxa. Recycling scenarios under intermediate DIN reduction show patchier areas of pH and oxygen loss with steeper vertical declines relative to a “no recycling” scenario. These patches are diminished under 85% DIN reduction across all recycling levels, suggesting nitrogen management lowers eutrophication risk even with concentrated discharges. These findings represent a novel application of ocean numerical models to investigate the regional effects of idealized outfall management on eutrophication. Additional work is needed to investigate more realistic outfall-specific water recycling and nutrient management scenarios and to contextualize the benefit of these management actions, given accelerating acidification and hypoxia from climate change.

Abstract Within oxygen minimum zones, anaerobic processes transform bioavailable nitrogen (N) into the gases dinitrogen (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. Mesoscale eddies in these regions create heterogeneity in dissolved N tracers and O2 concentrations, influencing nonlinear N cycle reactions that depend on them. Here, we use an eddy‐resolving model of the Eastern Tropical South Pacific to show that eddies enhance N2 production by between 43% and 64% at the expense of reducing N2O production by between 94% and 104% due to both the steep increase of progressive denitrification steps at vanishing oxygen, and the more effective inhibition of N2O consumption relative to production. Our findings reveal the critical role of eddies in shaping the N cycle of oxygen minimum zones, which is not currently represented by coarse models used for climate studies.

Hybrid rockets have very interesting characteristics like simplicity, reliability, safety, thrust modulation, environmental friendliness and lower costs, which make them very attractive for several applications like sounding rockets, small launch vehicles, upper stages, hypersonic test-beds and planetary landers. In recent years, advancements have been made to increase hybrid motor performance, and two of the most promising solutions are vortex injection and paraffin-based fuels. Moreover, both technologies can be also used to tailor the fuel regression rate, in the first case varying the swirl intensity, and in the second case with the amount and type of additives. In this way, it is possible not only to design high-performing hybrid motors, but also to adjust their grain and chamber geometries to different mission requirements, particularly regarding thrust and burning time. In this paper, the knowledge about these two technical solutions and their coupling is extended. Three sets of experimental campaigns were performed in the frame of the Italian Space Agency-sponsored PHAEDRA program. The first one investigated a reference paraffin fuel with axial and standard vortex injection. The second campaign tested vortex injection with low values of swirl numbers down to 0.5 with a conventional plastic fuel, namely polyethylene. Finally, the last campaign tested another, lower regressing, paraffin-based fuel with the same low swirl numbers as the second campaign.

Objective: Little is known about the cardiovascular changes after TEVAR and regarding the impact on aortic stiffness for different stent graft generations specifically, following changes in device design. The present study evaluated the stent graft induced aortic stiffening of two generations of the Valiant thoracic aortic stent graft. Methods: This was an ex vivo porcine investigation using an experimental mock circulatory loop. Thoracic aortas of young healthy pigs were harvested and connected to the mock circulatory loop. At a 60 bpm heart rate and stable mean arterial pressure, baseline aortic characteristics were obtained. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was calculated before and after stent graft deployment. Paired and independent sample t tests or their non-parametric alternatives were performed to test for differences where appropriate. Results: Twenty porcine thoracic aortas were divided into two equal subgroups, in which a Valiant Captivia or a Valiant Navion stent graft was deployed. Both stent grafts were similar in diameter and length. Baseline aortic characteristics did not differ between the subgroups. Mean arterial pressure values did not change after either stent graft, while pulse pressures increased statistically significantly after Captivia (mean 44 ± 10 mmHg to 51 ± 13 mmHg, p = .002) but not after Navion. Mean baseline PWV increased after both Captivia (4.4 ± 0.6 m/s to 4.8 ± 0.7 m/s, p = .007) and Navion (4.6 ± 0.7 m/s to 4.9 ± 0.7 m/s, p = .002). There was no statistically significant difference in the mean percentage increase in PWV for either subgroup (8 ± 4% vs. 6 ± 4%, p = .25). Conclusion: These experimental findings showed no statistically significant difference in the percentage increase of aortic PWV after either stent graft generation and confirm that TEVAR increases aortic PWV. As a surrogate for aortic stiffness, this calls for further improvements in future thoracic aortic stent graft designs regarding device compliance.

Abstract Eddies play a crucial role in shaping ocean dynamics by affecting material transport, and generating spatio‐temporal heterogeneity. However, how eddies at different scales modulate biogeochemical transformation rates remains an open question. Applying a multi‐scale decomposition to a numerical simulation, we investigate the respective impact of mesoscale and submesoscale eddies on nutrient transport and biogeochemical cycling in the California Current System. First, the non‐linear nature of nutrient uptake by phytoplankton results in a 50% reduction in primary production in the presence of eddies. Second, eddies shape the vertical transport of nutrients with a strong compensation between mesoscale and submesoscale. Third, the eddy effect on nutrient uptake is controlled by the covariance of temperature, nutrient and phytoplankton fluctuations caused by eddies. Our results shed new light on the tight interaction between non‐linear fluid dynamics and ecosystem processes in realistic eddy regimes, which remain largely under‐resolved by global Earth system models.

Background: Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is widely used in the treatment of neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in multiple sclerosis (MS); however, controlled studies are still lacking. Objective: To assess effectiveness of PTNS in MS patients with NDO unresponsive to pharmacological and behavioural therapies. Methods: MS patients with NDO were enrolled. Inclusion criteria were NDO not responding to pharmacological and behavioural therapies. Exclusion criteria were the presence of relevant comorbidities and urinary tract infections. Patients were evaluated using 3-day bladder diaries and validated questionnaires at baseline, after 4 weeks of educational therapy and after 12 PTNS sessions. The primary outcome measure was the percentage of patients considered responders after the behavioural therapy and after the PTNS in a historical controlled fashion (definition of ‘responder’ was reduction ⩾50% of urgency episodes). Results: A total of 33 patients (26 women, 7 men) were enrolled. Two patients dropped out for reasons not related to the protocol. Two out of 31 patients (6.5%) and 21/29 (72.4%) were considered responders at visits 1 and 2, respectively. In PTNS responders, a statistically significant improvement in both bladder diary results and standardized questionnaire scores was recorded, compared with that obtained with behavioural therapy alone. No serious adverse events were reported. Conclusion: This historically controlled study suggests that PTNS may be effective in improving NDO in MS patients.

Pelagic fish communities are shaped by bottom-up and top-down processes, transport by currents, and active swimming. However, the interaction of these processes remains poorly understood. Here, we use a regional implementation of the APex ECOSystem Model (APECOSM), a mechanistic model of the pelagic food web, to investigate these processes in the California Current, a highly productive upwelling system characterized by vigorous mesoscale circulation. The model is coupled with an eddy-resolving representation of ocean currents and lower trophic levels, and is tuned to reproduce observed fish biomass from fisheries independent trawls. Several emergent properties of the model compare realistically with observations. First, the epipelagic community accounts for one order of magnitude less biomass than the vertically migratory community, and is composed by smaller species. Second, the abundance of small fish decreases from the coast to the open ocean, while the abundance of large fish remains relatively uniform. This in turn leads to flattening of biomass size-spectra away from the coast for both communities. Third, the model reproduces a cross-shore succession of small to large sizes moving offshore, consistent with observations of species occurrence. These cross-shore variations emerge in the model from a combination of: (1) passive offshore advection by the mean current, (2) active swimming toward coastal productive regions to counterbalance this transport, and (3) mesoscale heterogeneity that reduces the ability of organisms to return to coastal waters. Our results highlight the importance of passive and active movement in structuring the pelagic food web, and suggest that a representation of these processes can help to improve the realism in simulations with marine ecosystem models.

Objectives: To evaluate the role of preoperative abdominal straining in predicting de novo overactive bladder (OAB) and voiding dysfunction in female patients undergoing suburethral taping by trans-obturator approach (TVT-O) for uncomplicated stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Methods: Data from patients who underwent TVT-O surgery for SUI were retrospectively analyzed. Inclusion criteria included: history of pure SUI. Exclusion criteria included previous surgery for urinary incontinence, pelvic radiation, pelvic surgery within the last 3 months, and anterior or apical pelvic organ prolapse (POP) ⩾ +1 cm. Voiding dysfunction has been defined through symptoms and or urodynamics (UDS) signs. Accordingly, patients were divided into group A and group B according to the presence of abdominal straining during UDS. Patients were observed clinically and with UDS at a 3-year follow-up. Results: A total of 192 patients underwent TVT-O surgery for uncomplicated SUI. Preoperative abdominal straining was identified in 60/192 patients (Group A: 31.2% vs Group B: 68.8%). Qmax was not different in the two groups (Group A: 19.5 vs Group B: 20.5 mL/s, p = 0.76). Demographics was similar for the two groups regarding age, parity. At 3-year follow-up, voiding dysfunction was reported in Group A: 9 and Group B: 8 patients ( p = 0.056), de novo OAB was significantly reported in Group A: 23 and Group B: 26 patients ( p = 0.007). Conclusion: Preoperative abdominal straining was found to be related to a significant incidence of de novo OAB. A significant correlation was not assessed for postoperative voiding dysfunction. Further studies may better define the impact of preoperative abdominal straining.

Abstract Background The prevalence of pure stress urinary incontinence (P-SUI) and the role of urodynamic investigation (UDI) prior to surgery for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is debated. Since the exact prevalence of P-SUI is not clear, its clinical and economic impact is not well defined. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of P-SUI in a population of women who underwent UDI for urinary incontinence (UI), also assessing: 1) the correspondence between clinical diagnosis of P-SUI and urodynamic findings; 2) the analysis of costs in terms of UDI and eventually post-UDI avoided surgical procedures. Methods A single cohort of women who underwent UDI for UI between January 2012 and July 2016 was prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed. Clinical P-SUI was defined by the strict criteria of the International Continence Society. For each patient, history, physical examination and UDI were collected. The correspondence between clinical and urodynamic findings of P-SUI was analyzed. The rate of clinical P-SUI changed after performing UDI and the number of unnecessary intervention after UDI were reported. A wide cost analysis of UDIs, and the amount of surgical procedures that were believed unnecessary after UDI was reported. Results Stress urinary incontinence was present in 323/544 (59.4%) patients. The prevalence of clinical P-SUI was 20.7% (67/323), while the prevalence of complicated SUI (C-SUI) was 79.3% (256/323). After UDI, diagnosis of P-SUI decreased to 18.3% (59/232). In 10.2% of cases (6/59) the scheduled middle urethral sling (MUS) was suppressed after the UDI results because 3/6 cases had detrusor overactivity and urge incontinence, in 2/6 cases SUI was treated with a conservative management, in 1/6 case an important voiding dysfunction was detected. Considering the national reimbursement in our country, the cost of each UDI was 296.5 euros and the total amount was 17,493.5 euros. So far the surgery-related savings covered 61.7–105.0% of the costs of total number of UDIs performed in the uncomplicated patients. Conclusions The prevalence of clinical P-SUI is relevant, involving about 20% of women with clinical SUI. Although the correspondence between clinical and urodynamic diagnosis was high, we demonstrated that UDI may help in some cases to avoid an inappropriate surgical treatment. Therefore, UDI prior to SUI surgery should be considered to achieve a correct diagnosis and a proper therapeutic strategy.

The Southern California Bight (SCB) is an upwelling-dominated, open embayment on the U.S. West Coast and receives discharges of anthropogenically-enhanced freshwater, nutrients, carbon, and other materials. These inputs include direct point sources discharged from wastewater treatment (WWT) plants via ocean outfalls and point, non-point, and natural sources discharged via coastal rivers. We assembled a daily time series over 1971–2017 of discharges from large WWT plants ≥ 50 million gallon per day (MGD) and 1997–2017 from small WWT plants and coastal rivers. Constituents include nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, alkalinity, iron, and silica. Data from research studies, several government and non-government agency databases containing discharge monitoring reports, river flow gauges, and other collateral information were compiled to produce this dataset. Predictive models and expert analysis addressed unmonitored sources and data gaps. The time series of terrestrial discharge and fluxes are provided with location of coastal discharge point or tributary. The data are deposited in a repository found in Sutula et al. [1].

Wearables are valuable solutions for monitoring a variety of physiological parameters. Their application in cardiorespiratory monitoring may significantly impact global health problems and the economic burden related to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Here, we describe a soft biosensor capable of monitoring heart (HR) and respiratory (RR) rates simultaneously. We show that a skin-interfaced biosensor based on fiber optics (i.e., the smart patch) is capable of estimating HR and RR by detecting local ribcage strain caused by breathing and heart beating. The system addresses some of the main technical challenges that limit the wide-scale use of wearables, such as the simultaneous monitoring of HR and RR via single sensing modalities, their limited skin compliance, and low sensitivity. We demonstrate that the smart patch estimates HR and RR with high fidelity under different respiratory conditions and common daily body positions. We highlight the system potentiality of real-time cardiorespiratory monitoring in a broad range of home settings.

The remineralization depth of sinking organic particles controls the efficiency of the biological carbon pump by setting the sequestration timescale of remineralized carbon in the ocean interior. Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) have been identified as regions of elevated particle transfer and efficient carbon sequestration at depth, but direct measurements remain sparse in these regions and only provide snapshots of the particle flux. Here, we use remineralization tracers to reconstruct time-mean particle flux profiles in the OMZs of the Eastern Tropical Pacific and the Arabian Sea. Compared to the surrounding tropical waters, both OMZs exhibit slow flux attenuation between 100 and 1000 m where suboxic waters reside, and sequester carbon beneath 1000 m more than twice as efficiently. Using a mechanistic model of particle sinking, remineralization, and disaggregation, we show that three different mechanisms might explain the shape of the OMZ flux profiles: (i) a significant slow-down of remineralization when carbon oxidation transitions from aerobic to anaerobic respiration (e.g., denitrification); (ii) the exclusion of zooplankton that mediate disaggregation of large particles from suboxic waters, and (iii) the limitation of remineralization by the diffusive supply of oxidants (oxygen and nitrate) into large particles. We show that each mechanism leaves a unique signature in the size distribution of particles, suggesting that observations with optical instruments such as Underwater Vision Profilers hold great promise for understanding the drivers of efficient carbon transfer though suboxic water columns. In turn, this will allow more accurate prediction of future changes in carbon sequestration as the ocean loses oxygen in a warming climate.

Hybrid rockets are considered a promising future propulsion alternative for specific applications to solid or liquid rockets. In order to raise their technology readiness level, it is important to perform predictive numerical simulations of their internal ballistics. The objective of this work is to describe and validate a numerical approach based on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations with sub-models for fluid–surface interaction, radiation, chemistry, and turbulence. Particular attention is given to scale effects by considering two different paraffin–oxygen hybrid rocket engines and a simplified grain evolution approach from the initial to the final port diameter. Moreover, a mild sensitivity of the computed regression rate to paraffin’s melting temperature, surface radiation emissivity, and Schmidt numbers is observed. Results highlight the increasing importance of radiation effects at larger scales and pressures. A numerical rebuilding of regression rate and pressure is obtained with simulations at the time-space-averaged port diameter, producing a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data, but a noticeable improvement is obtained by considering the grain evolution in time.

It is well-established that phytoplankton growth can be limited by the vanishingly low concentrations of dissolved iron found in large areas of the open ocean. However, the availability of iron is not typically considered an important factor in the ecology of marine animals, including fish. Here, we compile observations to show that the iron contents of lower trophic level organisms in iron-limited regions can be an order of magnitude less than the iron contents of most fish. Although this shortfall could theoretically be overcome if iron assimilation rates were very high in fish, observations suggest this is not the case, consistent with the high recommended iron contents for mariculture feed. In addition, we highlight two occurrences among fish living in iron-poor regions that would conceivably be beneficial given iron scarcity: the absence of hemoglobin in Antarctic icefish, and the anadromous life history of salmon. Based on these multiple lines of evidence, we suggest that the iron content of lower trophic level organisms can be insufficient to support many fish species throughout their life cycles in iron-poor oceanic regions. We then use a global satellite-based estimate of fishing effort to show that relatively little fishing activity occurs in high nitrate low chlorophyll (HNLC) regions, the most readily identified iron-poor domains of the ocean, particularly when compared to satellite-based estimates of primary production and the observed mesozooplankton biomass in those waters. The low fishing effort is consistent with a low abundance of epipelagic fish in iron-limited regions, though other factors are likely to contribute as well. Our results imply that the importance of iron nutrition extends well beyond plankton and plays a role in the ecology of large marine animals.

While numerous studies have indicated that carbon export to the deep ocean was greater during glacial periods, quantification is lacking. Here, via analysis of hundreds of sediment cores, the authors show carbon accumulation rate was 50% higher during glacial maxima than during interglacials.

Numerical analysis of hybrid rocket internal ballistics is carried out with a Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes solver integrated with a customized gas−surface interaction wall boundary condition and coupled with a radiation code based on the discrete transfer method. The fuel grain wall boundary condition is based on species, mass, and energy conservation equations coupled with thermal radiation exchange and finite-rate kinetics for fuel pyrolysis modeling. Fuel pyrolysis is governed by the convective and radiative heat flux reaching the surface and by the energy required for the propellant grain to heat up and pyrolyze. Attention is focused here on a set of static firings performed with a lab-scale GOX/HDPE motor working at relatively low oxidizer mass fluxes. A sensitivity analysis was carried out on the literature pyrolysis models for HDPE, to evaluate the possible role of the uncertainty of such models on the actual prediction of the regression rate. A reasonable agreement between the measured and computed averaged regression rate and chamber pressure was obtained, with a noticeable improvement with respect to solutions without including radiative energy exchange.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a nosological entity defined as a chronic immune-mediated fibro-inflammatory condition characterized by a tendency to form tumefactive, tissue-destructive lesions or by organ failure. Urologic involvement in IgG4-RD has been described in some short series of patients and in isolated case reports, most often involving the kidneys in so-called IgG4-related kidney disease (IgG4-RKD). The disease can occasionally mimic malignancies and is at risk of being misdiagnosed due to its rarity. We report the case of a 56-year-old man presenting with a right renal mass suspected of being malignant. Laboratory tests showed normal creatinine levels, a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and high levels of C-reactive protein and microalbuminuria. The patient underwent radical right nephroureterectomy and histopathologic examination revealed features proving IgG4-RKD. He was therefore referred to immunologists. Typical clinical presentation of IgG4-RKD includes altered renal function with inconstant or no radiologic findings. Conversely, in the case we presented, a single nodule was detected upon imaging evaluation, thus mimicking malignancy. This raises the issue of a proper differential diagnosis. A multidisciplinary approach can be useful, although in clinical practice the selection of patients suspected of having IgG4-RKD is critical in the cases presenting with a renal mass that mimics malignancy.

Human exploitation of marine resources is profoundly altering marine ecosystems, while climate change is expected to further impact commercially-harvested fish and other species. Although the global fishery is a highly complex system with many unpredictable aspects, the bioenergetic limits on fish production and the response of fishing effort to profit are both relatively tractable, and are sure to play important roles. Here we describe a generalized, coupled biological-economic model of the global marine fishery that represents both of these aspects in a unified framework, the BiOeconomic mArine Trophic Size-spectrum (BOATS) model. BOATS predicts fish production according to size spectra as a function of net primary production and temperature, and dynamically determines harvest spectra from the biomass density and interactive, prognostic fishing effort. Within this framework, the equilibrium fish biomass is determined by the economic forcings of catchability, ex-vessel price and cost per unit effort, while the peak harvest depends on the ecosystem parameters. Comparison of a large ensemble of idealized simulations with observational databases, focusing on historical biomass and peak harvests, allows us to narrow the range of several uncertain ecosystem parameters, rule out most parameter combinations, and select an optimal ensemble of model variants. Compared to the prior distributions, model variants with lower values of the mortality rate, trophic efficiency, and allometric constant agree better with observations. For most acceptable parameter combinations, natural mortality rates are more strongly affected by temperature than growth rates, suggesting different sensitivities of these processes to climate change. These results highlight the utility of adopting large-scale, aggregated data constraints to reduce model parameter uncertainties and to better predict the response of fisheries to human behaviour and climate change.
