Recent advances in microalgae biotechnology have proven that these microorganisms contain a number of bioactive molecules, that can be used as food additives that help prevent disease. The green microalga Chlorella vulgaris presents several biomolecules, such as lutein and astaxanthin, with antioxidant capacity, which can play a protective role in tissues. In this study, we produced and analyzed a C. vulgaris functional alcoholic beverage (produced using a traditional Brazilian alcoholic beverage, cachaça, and C. vulgaris biomass). Assays were conducted in vitro by radical scavenging tests, and in vivo, by modeling cortical spreading depression in rat brains. Scavenging radical assays showed that consumption of the C. vulgaris alcoholic beverage had a DPPH inhibition of 77.2%. This functional alcoholic beverage at a concentration of 12.5 g L-1 significantly improved cortical spreading depression velocity in the rat brains (2.89 mm min-1), when compared with cachaça alone (3.68 mm min-1) and control (distilled water; 3.25 mm min-1). Moreover, animals that consumed the functional beverage gained less weight than those that consumed just alcohol and the control groups. These findings suggest that the C. vulgaris functional alcoholic beverage plays a protective physiologic role in protecting brain cells from the effects of drinking ethanol.

Understanding the evolution of scientific literature is a critical and necessary step for the development and strengthening of a research field. However, an overview of global dinoflagellate research remains unavailable. Herein, global dinoflagellate research output was analyzed based on a scientometric approach using the Scopus data archive. The basic characteristics and worldwide interactions of dinoflagellate research output were analyzed to determine the temporal evolution and new emerging trends. The results confirm that dinoflagellate research output, reflected in the number of publications, is a fast-growing area since the mid-1990s. In total, five research subareas emerged using a bibliometric keywords analysis: (1) “symbiosis with coral reefs”, (2) “phylogeny”, (3) “palynology”, (4) “harmful algal blooms” and (5) “nutrition strategies”. Dinoflagellate publications were modeled by fish production (both aquaculture and fisheries) and economic and social indexes. Finally, directions for future research are proposed and discussed. The presented scientometric analysis confirms that dinoflagellate research is an active and important area with focus on mitigating economic impacts, especially in regard to fish production.

The temporal phytoplankton biomass variation at two Neotropical reservoirs during an extreme drought season were analyzed. Here we sought to evaluate the main abiotic factors involved in dynamics of phytoplankton during this drought period. The main difference between the reservoirs was the intensive fish and shrimp farming in one of the reservoirs. For quantitative analysis, sampling with bottles were carried out at an average depth of 0.5m. Water temperature, pH and electrical conductivity parameters were measured in situ and water samples were collected for dissolved inorganic nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus analyses. Aquaculture was probably one among the causes for the reservoirs were so different in the physical and chemical variables, as shown by the principal components analysis. The results showed specific groups dominance in both reservoirs. In the Cachoeira II reservoir, an invasive dinoflagellate, Ceratium furcoides, was present in all analyzed months, while, in the Saco I reservoir, cyanobacteria group represented more than 50% of phytoplankton biomass, mainly Microcystis aeruginosa and Dolichospermum sp. In two reservoirs precipitation, soluble reactive phosphorus and electrical conductivity were positively related with phytoplankton. Phytoplankton biomass was considerably larger in the Cachoeira II reservoir, due to the greater size and biovolume of the dominant dinoflagellate. These findings suggest that species dominance in extreme drought events may be favored.

Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito de três agentes na recuperação de resíduos de borracha, copolímero de etileno-propylene-dieno (EPDMR) contendo negro de fumo. Os três agentes preparados foram: EPDM modificado com 1-dodecanotiol (EPDMSDD), EPDM modificado com ácido esteárico (EPDMAE) e EPDM modificado com ácido graxo linolênico (EPDMAG). Os resultados de propriedades mecânicas mostraram que o EPDMSDD fornece a melhor combinação de resistência à tração e rasgamento associado à processabilidade. A adição dos agentes EPDMAE e EPDMAG melhorou a processabilidade da mistura por extrusão, mantendo suas propriedades mecânicas. Este resultado indica que o EPDMAE e o EPDMAG atuam como auxiliares de processamento.This work was aimed at examining the effect from three agents in the recycling of waste rubber, namely copolymer ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDMR) containing carbon black. Three agents were prepared: EPDM modified by 1-dodecanotiol (EPDMSDD), EPDM modified by stearic acid (EPDMAE) and EPDM modified by fatty linolenic acid (EPDMAG). For the mechanical properties, the better tensile and tear strength associated with manufacturing extrusion were obtained using EPDMSDD. EPDMAE and EPDMAG improved the processing by extrusion, while keeping the mechanical properties. These results indicate that EPDMAE and EPDMAG act as auxiliary agents for processability.

The use of microalgae as a source of food and pharmaceutical ingredients has garnered growing interest in recent years. Despite the rapid growth of the nutraceutical market, knowledge about the potential of bioactive molecules from microalgae remains insufficient. The present study aimed to investigate the biotechnological potential of the green microalga Desmodesmus armatus isolated from a semi-arid region of Brazil. The algal biomass was characterized in terms of gross biochemical composition, exopolysaccharide content, enzymatic inhibition capacity, and antioxidant, antibacterial, and hemolytic activities from solvents of different polarities (water, ethanol, acetone, and hexane). D armatus biomass had 40% of crude protein content, 25.94% of lipids, and 25.03% of carbohydrates. The prebiotic potential of exopolysaccharides from D armatus was demonstrated, which stimulated the growth of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum bacteria strains. Moreover, the enzyme inhibition capacity for the proteases chymotrypsin (34.78%–45.8%) and pepsin (16.64%–27.27%), in addition to α-amylase (24.79%) and lipase (31.05%) was confirmed. The antioxidant potential varied between the different extracts, with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl sequestration values varying between 17.51% and 63.12%, and those of the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) method between 6.82% and 22.89%. In the antibacterial activity test, only the ethanolic extract showed inhibition against Listeria sp. (at minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 256 µg mL−1). This fraction also presented the highest significant levels of hemolysis (31.88%–52.45%). In summary, the data presented in the study suggest the presence of biocompounds with biotechnological and nutraceutical potential in the D armatus biomass. A jaguatirica (Leopardus pardalis) é uma das espécies de felino silvestre que pouco foi investigada quanto a sua morfologia. Assim, o estudo objetivou detalhar a origem e distribuição dos ramos colaterais da aorta abdominal deste animal. Avaliou-se dois exemplares, sendo um macho e uma fêmea, jovens, provenientes de Paragominas-PA, doados ao Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA) da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). O sistema arterial foi preenchido com látex pigmentado de vermelho e os cadáveres foram preservados com solução de formaldeído tamponado a 10%. A aorta abdominal do L. pardalis teve origem entre T12 e L1, sendo a artéria celíaca o primeiro ramo visceral no sentido crânio-caudal, resultando nas artérias hepática, gástrica esquerda e esplênica. A artéria mesentérica cranial surgiu como segundo ramo da aorta abdominal, originando as artérias jejunais. Na sequência localizamos artéria pancreáticoduodenal caudal, artérias ileais, artérias ileocólicas, artérias renais direita e esquerda, artérias adrenais direita e esquerda e artérias ováricas ou testiculares direita e esquerda. Parietalmente, a aorta abdominal originou em média seis ramos lombares, bem como a artéria frenicoabdominal, as artérias circunflexas ilíacas profundas e artérias ilíacas externa e interna. A aorta abdominal gerou ainda a artéria mesentérica caudal, a qual dividiu-se em artérias cólica esquerda e retal cranial. A artéria cólica esquerda seguiu cranialmente paralela ao cólon descendente irrigando-o, originando em média 18 ramos, e anastomosando-se com a artéria cólica média. A artéria retal cranial seguiu em direção caudal distribuindo oito ramos à porção final do cólon descendente e ao reto, e uniu-se com a artéria retal média. Por fim, a aorta abdominal emitiu como ramo terminal a artéria sacral mediana. A vascularização arterial abdominal desta espécie é bastante semelhante ao descrito em felinos domésticos e demais mamíferos, com diferenças quanto ao número de artérias jejunais e origem das artérias renais.

Abstract Introduction Biological monoclonal antibodies play a pivotal role in cancer treatment, with biosimilars significantly enhancing their accessibility. In Brazil’s ethnically diverse setting, real-world evidence is crucial for assessing the effectiveness and applicability of these therapies in routine clinical practice. Methods We performed a multicentric, observational, prospective real-world study on biosimilar trastuzumab-dkst for adjuvant treatment of early HER2-positive breast cancer in Brazilian patients. Data were collected using a case-report form. Results Of the 176 recruited, we present data from the first 59 patients (mean age 51.7 ± 12.9 years) who had completed treatment with trastuzumab-dkst. The mean time from diagnosis to the first adjuvant treatment with trastuzumab-dkst was 5.5 ± 2.7 months. Of the patients, 59% of patients achieved at least a 30-month follow-up. The 31.7-month invasive disease-free survival rate (IDFS) was 94.5% (95% CI 83.9–98.2%) and median IDFS was not achieved, since only three patients had invasive disease recurrence. The overall survival rate was 100% until the last assessment. The observed adverse events were similar to those presented by other studies using biosimilar or reference trastuzumab. Four serious adverse events (8.5%) were observed. A reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction of at least 10% was observed in 16.9% of participants. There was no treatment interruption, and three participants (5.1%) had their trastuzumab-dkst dose reduced. Conclusion Our study reinforces the existing pivotal data, underscoring the real-world efficacy and safety of biosimilar trastuzumab-dkst in the adjuvant treatment for early HER2-positive breast cancer. The preliminary long-term effectiveness and safety data we present further validate trastuzumab-dkst’s role as a cost-saving alternative in oncological care. These findings have important implications for improving patient access to crucial treatments and for the more efficient use of healthcare resources. ClinicalTrials.gov Registration NCT03892655.

Introdução: A revisão sistemática (RS) tem como principal característica verificar nas mais diversas áreas do conhecimento o que existe descrito na literatura sobre uma determinada temática sintetizando em um único trabalho. Sua elaboração requer prática, estudo e o conhecimento de algumas particularidades. Objetivo: Apresentar considerações metodológicas quanto ao planejamento e condução de estudos do tipo RS, buscando identificar a organização de uma sequência ordenada e demais aspectos envolvidos em seu desenvolvimento. Métodos: Estudo de análise qualitativa metodológica utilizando a pesquisa bibliográfica. Resultados: Foram identificadas sete etapas sequenciais do processo de elaboração de uma RS: 1)Pergunta da pesquisa; 2)Protocolo de revisão; 3)Busca sistemática; 4)Seleção dos estudos; 5)Leitura e avaliação da qualidade metodológica ou risco de viés nos estudos; 6)Síntese e análise; e 7)Redação do relatório, avaliação da certeza das evidências e futura publicação. Conclusão: O presente estudo representa um guia metodológico completo para a condução de estudos de RS de alta qualidade.

Introduction: High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is understood as vigorous activity, with different intensities, interspersed with periods passive or active recovery, which induces an acute physiological response. Two running HIITs were analyzed, and biochemical markers of muscle damage (MD) and oxidative stress (OS) were measured. Materials and Methods: 15 soldiers were submitted to anthropometric and VO2 max assessments. Subsequently, they performed treadmill running HIITs: (a) moderate to strong intensity and active recovery (HIIT AR) and, (b) moderate to strong intensity with passive recovery (HIIT PR). Venous blood samples were collected pre and post-tests for analysis of MD (lactate, creatine kinase - CK and lactate dehydrogenase - LDH), and OS (lipid peroxidation- LP, carbonyl protein - PC, total antioxidant activity -TAA and total sulfhydryl groups - TSG). Results: Comparing MD at baseline x HIIT PR, it was observed an increase in CK, LDH and lactate. At baseline x HIIT AR, a significant increase in CK, LDH and lactate. Comparing HIIT RP x HIIT AR, only lactate was significantly affected by HIITs. Comparing OS at baseline x HIIT PR, there was a significant increase in LP and PC. Baseline x HIIT AR, there was a reduction only at TSG, and comparing HIIT PR x HIIT AR, there was a reduction in LP/VO2, TSG and PC. Conclusion: Both protocols increased blood levels of MD, but comparing HIIT PR and HIIT AR, lactate and OS were higher at HIIT PR. It is noteworthy that HIIT AR is more effective in removing lactate and modulating redox metabolism

Purpose Animal production wastes are promising for use in agricultural production as a plant nutrient or soil conditioner. However, if not properly managed, they can contaminate the soil and plants, resulting in public health risks. Considering that the composting technique is recommended to ensure compost hygiene and agronomic viability, the present study aimed to evaluate the microbiological and parasitic load during the composting of residues from conventional and organic animal productions. Method The presence of Salmonella sp. and/or helminth eggs and the quantification of thermotolerant coliforms were determined in horse bedding and organic and conventional poultry litter during the process of composting. Results The initial load of thermotolerant coliforms was greater than 1017 MPN g-1 in the three raw materials. All of them showed a significant reduction in these bacteria at the end of the composting process, reaching 99.98%, 100.00%, and 99.80% in the horse bedding, organic poultry litter, and conventional poultry litter, respectively. All the fresh residues contained helminth eggs, with the horse bedding exhibiting the highest amount compared to the others. However, they all revealed an absence of helminth eggs at the end of the composting process. Salmonella sp. was absent in both the raw materials and the final compost. Conclusion Composting was effective in eliminating helminth eggs and reducing thermotolerant coliform levels. However, the final composts retained a higher pathogenic microbial load than that required by the current Brazilian legislation for use in agriculture.

This research aimed to investigate the association between the skin temperature variation of the skin identified by thermography and serum CK values in healthy subjects based on a systematic review with meta-analysis. A systematic literature search was performed in June 2021 in the SCOPUS, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases (2000 to 2021). MeSH and DeCS platforms were used to find the descriptors in English referring to the terms “thermography” and “creatine kinase” with their synonyms (nine and 13, respectively) to find studies, following the PIRT strategy: Participants (healthy subjects); Index Test (thermography); Reference Test (CK collection); Target Condition (having analysed the results of the Index and Reference Test). A meta-analysis was performed to calculate the association between variables. A total of 483 files were retrieved from the databases, and 13 were selected for analysis (five met the criteria for meta-analysis). Considering the 13 studies reviewed, there is a general balance in obtaining results of CK increase along with skin temperature versus studies that didn’t observe any association between the measures. However, the meta-analysis showed no significant association between the variables analysed (r = -0.05; p = 0.06; 95%CI = -0.11 to 0.00). This result suggests that the result of one test cannot estimate the result of the other. It was concluded that there is no good association between CK levels and thermography results; it’s recommended the use of thermal images in addition to other evaluation methods in order to assist in the determination of special differential diagnoses of musculoskeletal injuries.

Introduction: Lower back pain (LBP), one of the main causes of pain, employee absenteeism and disabilities, exhibits a multifactorial and degenerative etiology, with different characteristics. Objective: a) analyze the acute effect of osteopathic treatment on the temperature of three dermatomes of patients with chronic lumbago; and b) assess the subjective pain perception of patients before and after an osteopathic session. Materials and methods: Quasi-experimental cross-sectional study of 14 individuals treated at a physical therapy clinic in Brasilia, Brazil. Data collection included physical therapy, pain scale (VAS), thermographic and anthropometric assessment. Treatment consisted of a single osteopathic session. Results and conclusions: leg and foot temperature declined (∆% = 2.91 and 4.76%, respectively, p = 0005) in the innervations of 2 regions of interest (ROIs) of the L4 lower limb dermatome and pain levels decreased (∆% = 65.98 and 59.92%, p = 0.005) in the men and women, respectively. In addition, a strong correlation was observed between the maximum (r=0.742 and p-value = 0.002) and mean temperature variations of the lumbar region (r=0.733 and p-value = 0.003), according to the VAS. It was concluded that acute osteopathic treatment was efficient in varying the temperature at reference points of the dermatome analyzed and lowering pain perception, suggesting the effectiveness of the proposed treatment.

Abstract Ceratium furcoides is an invasive species that has caused ecological imbalance in several reservoirs in Brazil. This study investigates the main factors that may favor the occurrence of Ceratium furcoides blooms in a tropical reservoir from the Northeast Brazil, during an extreme drought season. Samples containing phytoplankton were collected monthly from February to September 2017. Quantitative analysis of C. furcoides was performed and the cell volume was estimated using geometric formulas. Mean biovolume of C. furcoides showed significant differences, ranging from 0.78 mm3 L-1 to 11.29 mm3 L-1 reported in March and September, respectively. Environmental parameters presented low oscillation throughout the study, except the conductivity. Significant relationships among the C. furcoides biovolume, water temperature and soluble reactive phosphate were observed. The findings reported here suggest that adverse conditions caused by a drought season did not negatively affect this species.

Infrared thermography (IRT) has become increasingly common in sports assessment and has grown a lot over the past few years. Our objective was to identify the assessment protocols and the skin temperature behavior of practitioners of endurance sports. A systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA recommendations between the 1st and the 31st of March 2020, at MEDLINE, LILACS, SCOPUS, SPORT Discus, CINAHL, Web of Science, Science Direct, Cochrane, and Scielo, using combinations with 11 descriptors for “Thermography” and 6 descriptors for “Endurance training”. It was identified 24 different regions of interest (ROIs) evaluated region in endurance sports. The acclimatization time was respected in 75% of the selected studies, and the thermal images were acquired predominantly in three moments: before the test, immediately after the test, and 10 minutes after the test. It was observed that Tskin decreased in the initial moments and increased after exercise. It can be concluded that the ROIs used were mostly the specific muscle recruited in each modality, with emphasis on the muscle groups of the lower limbs, and after this initial decrease in temperature, the thermal response is mainly dependent on the duration and intensity of exercise. Animal waste is widely used in organic production systems. However, these residues can increase antimicrobial determinants in the soil. In this perspective, this study was developed to evaluate the presence of sulfonamide resistance genes in soils from an organic production system that received animal waste as organic fertilizer. Soil samples were collected from four properties with different management practices to increase soil fertility. Three properties use the animal waste from the conventional system and the other use plant residues as soil cover and a legal reserve. The extraction of total DNA from soil was carried out followed by the amplification of genes encoding sulfonamide resistance (sul1 and sul2) by the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technique. The sul1 and sul2 genes were detected only in soils treated with animal waste. The genes were not detected in soils from the legal reserve and the property that used plant residues as soil cover. These results indicate that the use of animal waste as agricultural fertilizer can increase genes for resistance to antimicrobials in the soil and the composting process may not be enough to eliminate them. This information reiterates the need to implement standards that establish quality parameters for animal waste, considering resistance to antimicrobials, as well as the development of management strategies that reduce the risk of spreading resistance to antimicrobials when these residues are applied to soils.

The black tamarin (Saguinus niger) occurs in all states of Brazil, including large urban centers due to population growth. Considering that the practice of medicine and surgery on wild animals has become more prevalent in veterinary medicine, this work describes the aortic arch of S. niger with the goal of aiding emergency surgeries. Four animals were studied. Three individuals had an aortic arch like the arch described for domesticated animals, including the presence of a left subclavian artery and brachiocephalic artery. In one individual, the arrangement of the collateral branches of the aortic arch followed the pattern found in humans, including the presence of a brachiocephalic artery, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery. Regardless of the initial configuration of the aortic arch of the black tamarin, the right subclavian, right vertebral, right internal thoracic, right costocervical and right superficial cervical arteries arose, sequentially, from the brachiocephalic artery. The branches formed by the left subclavian artery correlated with the right antimer.

ABSTRACT: Anomalocardia brasiliana post-larvae were cultured for 28 days to evaluate the effect of stocking density on their growth and survival rate. Three stocking densities were tested 40, 80 and 160 post-larvae cm-2, in experimental units (2-L) with static cultivation system and total water renewal at each 48 hours. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and three repetitions each. Stocking density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length within 24 days, while only 18% of the post-larvae at density of 80 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length in the same time. The density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 had the highest specific growth rate, 4.98±0.08% day-1. The survival rates of post-larvae at lower densities were significantly higher (53.24±4.60% and 52.95±3.32%, on 40 and 80 post-larvae cm-2, respectively) compared to higher stocking density (31.54±0.70%). In the cultivation of A. brasiliana post-larvae, stocking density must be managed during growth. The density of 160 post-larvae cm-2 can only be used until the post-larvae reach 600μm in length, then they should be at 40 post-larvae cm-2 density to keep the maximum daily growth rate.

Researchers have used dogs with neurological sequelae caused by distemper as an experimental model for multiple sclerosis, owing to the similarities of the neuropathological changes between distemper virus-induced demyelinating leukoencephalitis and multiple sclerosis in humans. However, little is known about the role of mesenchymal stem cells in treating such clinical conditions. Therefore, we investigated the use of mesenchymal stem cells in four dogs with neurological lesions caused by the distemper virus. During the first year after cellular therapy, the animals did not demonstrate significant changes in their locomotive abilities. However, the intense (Grade V) myoclonus in three animals was reduced to a moderate (Grade IV) level. At one year after the mesenchymal stem cell infusions, three animals regained functional ambulation (Grade I), and all four dogs started to move independently (Grades I and II). In two animals, the myoclonic severity had become mild (Grade III). It was concluded that the use of mesenchymal stem cells could improve the quality of life of dogs with neurological sequelae caused by canine distemper, thus presenting hope for similar positive results in human patients with multiple sclerosis.

Resumo Tendo em vista o ativismo dos feminismos, tanto nos movimentos sociais quanto nas artes, na promoção de novos modos de subjetivação e modos de existência múltiplos e voltados às práticas de liberdade, propomo-nos a refletir sobre os fazeres artísticos feministas em passagens políticas que se valem de uma força inventiva/afirmativa do corpo enquanto estratégia de subversão e resistência para propor outras formas de viver, inclusive, a pesquisa em Psicologia.O texto se volta às estéticas feministas, nas artes visuais, nas quais o corpo se torna um território para experimentação, discutindo ainda a tradução destas estéticas a uma prática de pesquisa em Psicologia.

Introdução: A contínua evolução do futebol tem exigido uma melhor preparação física dos atletas. Devido a esse fato, fisiologistas têm analisado o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2máx) de atletas como uma maneira de se determinar o nível de preparo físico de cada jogador. Objetivo: Avaliar a capacidade cardiopulmonar dos jogadores da Seleção Brasileira Militar de Futebol, comparando os resultados entre as diferentes posições da equipe. Métodos: Pesquisa do tipo observacional seccional. Foram avaliados 28 atletas (cinco zagueiros, cinco laterais, cinco volantes, seis meio-campistas, sete atacantes, idade entre 19 e 40 anos). Os participantes foram submetidos a um teste de esforço cardiopulmonar com um protocolo de rampa (0,4 km/h a cada 30 segundos, iniciando com 8,0 km/h), avaliando VO2, ventilação minuto, velocidade, frequência cardíaca tanto no limiar anaeróbico quanto no esforço máximo. A comparação entre as posições foi feita através da análise de variância (ANOVA) One-way (p < 0,05). Resultados: O VO2máx não apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as posições (p=0,163): 55,89 ± 7,39 ml/kg/min (zagueiros); 52,55 ± 6,21 ml/kg/min (laterais); 49,65 ± 6,22 ml/kg/min (volantes); 53,81 ± 5,18 ml/kg/min (meio campistas) e 58,35 ± 4,85 ml/kg/min (atacantes). Comportamento similar foi observado para as demais variáveis analisadas, tanto para o momento de limiar anaeróbico, quanto para o esforço máximo. Conclusão: Os atletas não apresentaram diferença tanto em relação à capacidade cardiopulmonar máxima quanto ao limiar anaeróbico, segundo posições dos jogadores o que pode ser explicado pelo período inicial da temporada de treinamento e competição. Physiologists have analyzed athlete’s maximum oxygen uptake (VO2máx) to determine players physical fitness. Objective: To evaluate the cardiopulmonary capacity of the Brazilian Army Soccer Team, comparing the results among the different playing positions. Methods: Observational cross-sectional research. Primata endêmico do Brasil, especificamente da floresta Amazônica, o Sauim alimentam-se de pequenos vertebrados, invertebrados, exudatos, flores, néctar, folhas e fungos, cuja morfologia é pouco conhecida. Assim, objetivou-se estabelecer parâmetros morfométricos e topográficos do cone medular dessa espécie, que sirvam de base para a prática das anestesias epidurais. Para tanto, foram avaliados quatro exemplares, provenientes da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). O Saguinus midas apresentou sete vértebras lombares e três vértebras sacrais. Após a dissecação do cone medular, registrou-se os aspectos anatômicos de interesse, enfatizando seu início (base) e seu término (ápice), que, após mensuração, revelou base em nível de L4 e ápice em S2, com comprimento médio de 5,38cm, o que leva a sugerir a região lombosacral como sendo a mais adequada para o desenvolvimento da prática de anestesias epidurais.Primate endemic to Brazil, specifically in the Amazon rainforest, the Sauim feed on small vertebrates, invertebrates, exudates, flowers, nectar, leaves and fungi whose morphology is poorly known. Thus, the objective was to establish morphometric parameters and topographical conus of this species, as a basis for the practice of epidural anesthesia. For this purpose, four samples were evaluated, from the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). The Saguinus midas had seven lumbar vertebrae and three sacral vertebrae. After dissection of the conus, we recorded the anatomy of interest, emphasizing its beginning (base) and its end (apex), revealed that after measuring the level of base peak in L4 and S2, with an average length of 5.38cm, which leads us to suggest the lumbosacral region as the most suitable for the development of the practice of epidural anesthesia.

Bulls were finished in feedlot and fed two diets: sorghum silage + 1.0% concentrate of LW or sugar cane + 1.2% concentrate LW. The bulls were slaughtered at one of two fat thicknesses: 3.4 or 4.8 mm. The bulls of the LIZ and ANZ groups showed higher FBW and ADG. There were no differences in the feed intake and carcass characteristics among the groups. Bulls from LIZ group had a lower fat thickness and higher muscle deposition. There were no differences among groups on carcass characteristics. The bulls fed with sorghum silage had a higher FBW, ADG and carcass weight than those fed sugar cane, while the animals fed sugar cane had a higher DMI and lower feed efficiency. There was no difference in hot carcass dressing between the diets. The sorghum silage or sugar cane did not change carcass characteristics or the meat composition. The FBW and HCD were similar for the two levels of fat thickness. Innumerable species of wild animals have not yet been described anatomically. The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), a wild cat with ample geographic distribution, is an example of this. With the aim of describing the morphology of this animal, we studied the reproductive system of a young male taken from the area of Mina de Bauxita Paragominas/PA – Vale do Rio Doce, that was donated post mortem to the Instituto de Saúde e Produção Animal (ISPA) of the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). The animal was fixed with formaldehyde 10% and kept in this same solution until the dissection of system under study. The masculine reproductive organs of the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) are represented by: a pair of testis; an epididymis consisting of a head, body and tail; accessory genital glands, i.e. prostate and bulbourethral glands; a masculine urethra and penis.

Plants of the genus Hypericum, long used in folk medicine, contain active compounds which present, anti-septic, diuretic, digestive, expectorant, vermifugal, anti-depressive and other properties. The possible clastogenic effect of a H. brasiliense extract was tested in vivo on the bone marrow cells of Wistar rats. The extract was administered by gavage at doses of 50, 150 and 300 mg/kg body weight. Experimental and control animals were submitted to euthanasia 24 h after the treatment for micronucleus (MN) and chromosome preparations. H. brasiliense extract did not induce statistically significant increases in the average numbers of MN or chromosome aberrations in the test systems employed.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de um programa de caminhada sobre parâmetros biofísicos em mulheres com sobrepeso. Pesquisa do tipo experimental com grupode 78 indivíduos, do sexo feminino, assistidas pelo Programa de Saúde da Família (PSF), e randomizados em grupo experimental (GE: n=39; 51,28 ± 7,29 anos; IMC: 26,84 ± 2,76) e grupo controle (GC: n=39; 48,00 ± 8,31 anos; IMC: 27,50 ± 6,44). Realizou-se: avaliação antropométrica e do nível de condicionamento físico, medida da pressão arterial e coleta de amostras sanguíneas para verificação das variáveis de colesterol total, fração HDL do colesterol (HDL), fração LDL do colesterol (LDL), triglicerídeos e glicemia. Após isso, o GEsubmeteu-se a treinamento composto por caminhadas, durante doze semanas, frequência semanal de três dias, duração de cinqüenta minutos e intensidade entre 60%-70% da frequência cardíaca máxima. Com a finalidade de mapear a Vulnerabilidade Natural do Aquífero da área do Campus Tapajós da Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará, este trabalho descreve os resultados obtidos a partir do método geofísico eletrorresistividade aliado com a hidrogeologia e geologia local. A vulnerabilidade foi estimada a partir do método GOD proposto por Foster e Hirata (1988). Foram realizadas 10 Sondagens Elétricas Verticais (SEVs). Aplicado ao método GOD, obteve-se o mapa de vulnerabilidade natural, o qual demonstra vulnerabilidade de toda a área é média. Esses resultados podem ser utilizados para melhorar o gerenciamento dos resíduos líquidos, minimizando assim os impactos ambientais sobre a qualidade das águas subterrâneas no Campus e ao seu entorno.
