Grounded theory offers a way to examine the journeys of Black radio leaders. A group of 14 radio station leaders interviewed by The HistoryMakers and available in the HistoryMakers Digital Archive were selected for the following areas: educational background, career path, journey into the radio industry, management strategy, and insights on sustainability of the Black Radio medium. The 14 radio leaders did not reflect a consistent pattern of career preparation. Four initial building blocks—ownership, leadership, management and outlook led to a second tier of themes—that together form the "Tenets of Black Radio Resilience." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research focused on how the Black Press covered Hurricane Ida in two cities - New Orleans and Philadelphia - with majority Black populations while they were covering the COVID-19 pandemic. In Louisiana, the Black Press focused on how Hurricane Ida may have compounded existing challenges among African American residents that were already lingering from the COVID-19 pandemic. In Philadelphia, in the wake of Hurricane Ida, readers of the oldest continuously published Black-owned newspaper learned of the disproportionate impact of climate change on racial minority communities. What this study reaffirms is that even in natural disaster crises, the Black Press, as an ethnic, advocacy press, fills gaps in coverage that aims to distinguish how low income, communities of color suffer more, what those disparities look like and what resources are needed to help those most in need. The article discusses synopses of papers showing the versatility of the use of intersectionality in journalism and mass communication research, presented at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference in Detroit, Michigan in August 2022. Topics of the essays include the use of intersectionality as a normative theory by organizations doing preventive education on gender-based violence and as theory and method for studying media messages and audience effects.

The 2005 hurricane season provided unprecedented opportunities for local television stations to serve the public interest in live, often commercial-free, coverage of severe weather. In this examination of four local television stations' coverage of four Atlantic hurricanes in two Southeastern markets, observed patterns of behavior culminated in the development of the Local Weather Continuous Coverage Model. The study showed that unlike their cable news counterparts, local television news continuous coverage prioritizes weather personnel over live, on-the-scene news reporting. Media historians study the "dynamic dimension of historical memory." Describing where one has been and influencing where one is going, historical memory serves as a snapshot to capture a moment or set of moments that can be frozen in time. This article provides an understanding of the historical and collective memory of eighteen employees who left their television news jobs after decades at a single local station. Eight of the broadcast journalists were given buyouts as part of downsizing at WXIA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Atlanta, Georgia that is part of TEGNA. But, departing employees at two other stations in Atlanta and seven other markets also left messages worthy of closer analysis of their most poignant memories. The findings reveal how collective memory is processual, unpredictable, partial, usable, both particular and universal, and material. These six categories reveal the "Power of Parting Words" in "exit interviews" and the significance historical memory has in an institutional context of journalism. Since leaving their jobs in 2016, two of the employees in this research have passed away. Their archived interviews are central elements of "memorializing discourse" scholarship and convey a component of collective memory that invokes shared norms and values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The amount of time dedicated to sports coverage in local news has decreased substantially in recent years. In fact, some networks have eliminated traditional sports segments or outsourced them to national organizations. The now defunct Sinclair Broadcast Group's SportsCentral represented a cost-efficient way to produce local sports segments in multiple media markets, and this study sought to understand how Sports-Central broadcasts compared with traditional broadcasts in 3 markets. An analysis of SportsCentral segments over a 17-month period in the Birmingham, AL; Oklahoma City; and Tampa-St. Petersburg markets showed that traditional sportscasts provided more local sports coverage than shows airing SportsCentral. While relying more heavily on satellite-generated content, sportscasts using SportsCentral had a wider variety of stories and aired more sports feature stories and franchises than the traditional sportscast. However, local newscasts found ways to integrate sports coverage into the news broadcast to cover late-breaking or important local stories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study attempts to understand the mechanism driving programs of journalism and mass communication to converge media spaces. The extent and variation of these changes are discussed as findings from national survey show that a majority of programs are at least experimenting with convergence.

The key findings of the 2001 Annual Survey of Journalism and Mass Communication Enrollments show that the number of students enrolled in undergraduate studies, graduate studies and master's degree programs in journalism and mass communication have declined in the year 2001-2002 in comparison with a year earlier. It reports that the percentage of students in journalism and mass communication programs who are women grew in 2001-2002 resulting in the highest percentages since the end of World War II and also indicates the percentages of African-American and Hispanic students enrolled in undergraduate studies, master's programs and doctoral programs in journalism and mass communication.

Why subject third graders to the scrutiny of scholars at an academic conference? As one example of "unconventional engagement," The Oakdale Eagle, a newsletter established in 2011 as a result of a partnership initiated by a local elementary school, demonstrates the value of higher education responding to a call from the community. Not associated with a service-learning class or academic research but involving college students amd faculty from The University of Alabama and Stillman College, this partnership exemplified the power of volunteerism and community service. The highlight occurred when third graders, who were among the first to write stories for The Oakdale Eagle, made a presentation at the 2012 National Outreach Scholarship Conference in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In addition to contrasting conventional and unconventional community engagement, this article charts the five steps in a unique community-initiated partnership. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
