The magnetic structure of CsCo2Se2 was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction technique. An antiferromagnetic transition with the propagation vector (0,0,1) was observed at T_N = 78 K. The Co magnetic moment 0.772(6) {\mu}_B at 10 K pointing in the basal plane couples ferromagnetically in the plane which stacks antiferromagnetically along the c direction. Tuning and suppressing the interplane antiferromagnetic interaction may be crucial to induce the material to a superconducting state., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have been long sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly is still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of $\sim$2 meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principle calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction $K$ term and the isotropic antiferromagentic off-diagonal exchange interaction $\Gamma$ term are significantly larger than the Heisenberg exchange coupling $J$ term. Our experimental data can be well fit using an effective-spin model with $K=-6.8$ meV and $\Gamma=9.5$ meV. These results demonstrate explicitly that Kitaev physics is realized in real materials., Comment: To appear in PRL

The magnetic structure of the spin-chain antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 is determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction experiment. The system undergoes magnetic long range order below T_N = 4.96 K. The moment of 2.16{\mu}_B per Co at 1.6 K in the screw chain running along the c axis alternates in the c-axis. The moments of neighboring screw chains are arranged antiferromagnetically along one in-plane axis and ferromagnetically along the other in-plane axis. This magnetic configuration breaks the 4-fold symmetry of the tetragonal crystal structure and leads to two equally populated magnetic twins with antiferromagnetic vector in the a or b axis. The very similar magnetic state to the isostructural BaCo2V2O8 warrants SrCo2V2O8 another interesting half-integer spin-chain antiferromagnet for investigation on quantum antiferromagnetism., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

It has been well established that both in bulk at ambient pressure and for films under modest strains, cubic SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ ($\delta < 0.2$) is a ferromagnetic metal. Recent theoretical work, however, indicates that a magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetic structure could occur under large strain accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. We have observed a strain-induced ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition in SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ films grown on DyScO$_3$ substrates, which provide a large tensile epitaxial strain, as compared to ferromagnetic films under lower tensile strain on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. Magnetometry results demonstrate the existence of antiferromagnetic spin correlations and neutron diffraction experiments provide a direct evidence for a G-type antiferromagnetic structure with Ne\'el temperatures between $T_N \sim 135\,\pm\,10\,K$ and $\sim 325\,\pm\,10\,K$ depending on the oxygen content of the samples. Therefore, our data experimentally confirm the predicted strain-induced magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state for SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ thin films under large epitaxial strain., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 was systematically investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. We discover that the singlet-triplet spin gap excitation survives in this series with x up to 13, indicating the singlet dimer ground state in these compounds. This observation corrects the previous speculation that the spin gap collapses at x~13 by the NMR technique. The strong intensity modulation along QH in x=0 gradually evolves into a Q-independent feature in x>11. This could be attributed to the localized Cu moment magnetism developing into an itinerant magnetism with increasing x. It is a surprise that the spin gap persists in the normal state of this spin ladder system with metallic behaviour, which evidences the possibility of magnetically-mediated carrier pairing mechanism in a two-leg spin ladder lattice., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We present elastic neutron scattering results at high magnetic fields for Mg-doped CuGeO$_{3}$. For low magnesium concentrations, where a spin-Peierls phase is present, we find an enhancement of the long range antiferromagnetic order in the structural incommensurate phase induced by a high magnetic field. In the incommensurate phase, the N\'eel temperature increases with field leading to a gain in the magnetic Bragg peak intensity at low temperatures. We also find that the magnetic Bragg peaks remain commensurate even though the structure is incommensurate at high magnetic fields due to the formation of solitons. We interpret these results in terms of the solitons formed at high-magnetic fields effectively acting as doped impurities.
