Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the main causes of death in the world. Functional indices such as fractional flow reserve (FFR), coronary flow reserve (CFR) and instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) are used to estimate the severity of CAD. Approximately 30–50% of patients have residual myocardial ischaemia even after formally successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Myocardial perfusion impairment is one of the main factors responsible for recurrence. We propose a novel 1D model of coronary hemodynamics that takes into account myocardial contraction, stenoses and impaired microcirculation. It uses non-invasively acquired data. The model is able to simulate FFR and iFR with a mean relative error of 3% and a standard mean deviation of 0.04. We find that healthy FFR and iFR values in the short and long term do not always correspond to healthy CFR values and recovery of coronary blood flow. We also show that PCI of stenosis also improves hemodynamic indices in adjacent stenosed vessels, with a more pronounced effect in the long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study introduces an innovative approach leveraging physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for the efficient computation of blood flows at the boundaries of a four-vessel junction formed by a Fontan procedure. The methodology incorporates a 3D mesh generation technique based on the parameterization of the junction's geometry, coupled with an advanced physically regularized neural network architecture. Synthetic datasets are generated through stationary 3D Navier–Stokes simulations within immobile boundaries, offering a precise alternative to resource-intensive computations. A comparative analysis of standard grid sampling and Latin hypercube sampling data generation methods is conducted, resulting in datasets comprising 1.1 × 10 4 and 5 × 10 3 samples, respectively. The following two families of feed-forward neural networks (FFNNs) are then compared: the conventional "black-box" approach using mean squared error (MSE) and a physically informed FFNN employing a physically regularized loss function (PRLF), incorporating mass conservation law. The study demonstrates that combining PRLF with Latin hypercube sampling enables the rapid minimization of relative error (RE) when using a smaller dataset, achieving a relative error value of 6 % on the test set. This approach offers a viable alternative to resource-intensive simulations, showcasing potential applications in patient-specific 1D network models of hemodynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ensuring the required resource of the bearing capacity of the crane beams is one of the most urgent tasks from the point of view of the rational design. The approach proposed in this article is based on the principle of redistribution of the functions of the elements involved in the operation of the crane structure. Weak resistance to rotation of the top flange and the adjoining web zone is a critical disadvantage of a typical crane structure. Additional reinforce elements are proposed to eliminate the consequences of the influence of this disadvantage. At the same time, these reinforce elements practically do not perceive either the vertical or horizontal components of the crane load, preventing only the rotation of the top flange on the length between the beam stiffeners. Another feature is that no additional stress concentration zones are created either in the flange or in the web from welding or drilling holes. The article provides a comparative analysis of the stress-strain state of the crane beams based on the results of numerical calculations carried out with the use of ABAQUS software package. It is shown that the stresses in the upper zone of the beam web, reinforced by the proposed method, are up to 20% lower than in a conventional I-beam. However, despite the simplicity of the solution, the positive results of numerical analysis and the supposed manufacturability of the approach, it is undoubtedly necessary to conduct a series of full-scale experiments on already existing objects.

A new parallel numerical framework CarNum is presented for efficient coupling of mathematical models in multiphysics problems such as computational cardiac electromechanics. This framework is based on open source projects, which provide the core functionality of the platform. Computational cardiac electromechanics requires a complex pipeline of solving different types of ordinary and partial differential equations. Our framework allows one to implement different numerical schemes and provides more control in multiphysics coupling. This paper outlines a concept of the new platform and details of numerical modelling of cardiac electromechanics. First experiments with well-known cardiac electromechanics benchmarks show good agreement with other groups and decent parallel scalability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of curvilinear elements in load-bearing metal structures of high-rise buildings supposes ensuring of their bearing capacity and serviceability. There may exist a great variety of shapes and orientations of such structural elements. In particular, it may be various flat curves of an open or closed oval profile such as circular or parabolic arch or ellipse. The considered approach implies creating vast internal volumes without loss in the load-bearing capacity of the frame. The basic concept makes possible a wide variety of layout and design solutions. The presence of free internal spaces of large volume in "skyscraper" type buildings contributes to resolving a great number of problems, including those of communicative nature. The calculation results confirm the basic assumptions.

The article deals with intelligent operation decision support system under condition of potentially hazardous nuclear facilities. The proposed system is referred to the class of advising systems and does not make final decisions in case of deviations of parameters to be analyzed, but generates general ways to solve an encountered problem and issues a set of recommendations for the plant personnel. In the article a fuzzy logic tool is used as mathematic tool. Lessons learnt from operation of nuclear facilities demonstrate that existing critical components (parts, areas, welding joints) are subject to increased failure under conditions of high operational loads, including beyond design loads and negative environmental impact. Usually in that situation there is probability of equipment integrity failure, when the unit is at power, with severe defect downing. For instance, the coolant leak and potential development of initial penetration defect to critical dimensions. In other words, in fact, the final observable result is always one – formation and development of operational crack which jeopardizes design integrity of the component and, accordingly, seriously compromises the nuclear power unit operation. The proposed situational model is linked with real knowledge data base where generated situational pairs are stored. The expert system is used for knowledge data base formation. Actually the proposed system consists of two independent fuzzy systems. From mathematical tool point of view, the advantage of such systems combination is lack of defuzzification unit in the first system and fuzzification unit in the second one.
