Diatoms are good indicators of a variety of lake water conditions including salinity, pH, light availability, temperature and nutrient levels, but diatoms as palaeoindicators are relatively poorly studied in the Chelyabinsk region. The diatom results of analysis a 498 cm long continuous sediments core from the Lake Big Miassovo (Southern Urals, Russia) are presented. The core was collected in July 2018 from central part of the lake from a depth of 24 m. Diatom analysis of 51 samples revealed 124 taxa, belonging to 47 genera. Diatom diagram has been divided into two diatom zones and five subzones on the basis on changing diatom abundances and taxa composition. The predominance of cosmopolitan, alkaliphilic benthic, oligogalobic species with the growth under the moderate temperatures is noted. The prevalence of Handmannia comta diatom in sediments have been established. The first period reflected the stage of an oligotrophic-mesotrophic lake with a low water level. The second period is characterized by an increase in the number of planktonic species and diversity of diatoms communities, the formation of a deep water body in a warm climate.

International audience; Objective: The 23 French Regional Pneumococcal Observatories (ORPs) analyzed antibiotic resistance and serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from invasive infections in France over a 12-year period.Methods: Between 2009 and 2021, the ORPs analyzed 19,319 strains, including 1,965 in children and 17,354 in adults. Strains were assessed for their resistance to penicillin G, amoxicillin and cefotaxime. Serotypes were identified in collaboration with the National Reference Centre.Results: During this period, the number of strains collected yearly decreased significantly. The decrease was particularly pronounced up until 2013, especially in children (-61.0%). However, penicillin non-susceptible strains (PNSPs) increased in children (24.7% in 2009 vs 45.0% in 2021, p < 0.0001) and in adults (27.1% in 2009 vs 31.3% in 2021, p < 0.05), as well as resistance (I + R) to amoxicillin (children: 12.5% in 2009 vs 19.4% in 2021, p < 0.05; adults: 13.4% in 2009 vs 14.5% in 2021, NS) and resistance (I + R) to cefotaxime (children: 8.0% in 2009 vs 13.1% in 2021, p < 0.05; adults: 7.1% in 2009 vs 11.9% in 2021, p < 0.0001). All in all, the proportion of strains belonging to serotypes present in the PCV13 vaccine has fallen sharply, from 64.8% in 2009 to 23.6 % in 2021. At the same time, serotypes such as 8, 10A, 11A, 15B/C and 9N, not included in PCV13, were increasing.Conclusion: During the study period, data collected by the network highlighted an increase of invasive PNSPs in children and non-vaccine serotypes. Surveillance of resistance and serotypes remains instrumental, particularly to monitor the evolution of vaccine efficacy.

This article discusses a possible scenario of energy transition in Russia, taking into account the economic structure, presence of huge oil and gas infrastructure and unique natural resources. All this allows to consider global trends of energy and economic decarbonization not only as a challenge, but also as a new opportunity for the country. Considering developed oil and gas production, transportation, refining and petrochemical infrastructure, as well as the vast territory, forest, water and soil resources, our country has unique opportunities for carbon sequestration using both biological systems and the existing oil and gas infrastructure. It is proposed to use the existing oil and gas production facilities for hydrogen generation in the processes of hydrocarbon catalytic transformation inside the reservoir. It is suggested to create and use large-scale technologies for CO2 sequestration using existing oil and gas production infrastructure. Considering high potential of the Russian Federation for carbon sequestration by biological systems, a network of Russian carbon testing areas is being developed, including one at Kazan Federal University (KFU), – the “Carbon-Povolzhye” testing area. The creation of carbon farms based on the applications at such testing areas could become a high-demand high-tech business. A detailed description of the KFU carbon testing area and its planned objectives are given.

Well drilling with core extraction is one of the most expensive procedures in the oil industry. The potential alternative, which may open opportunities for cost-efficient acquisition of petrophysical data, can be an approach based on digital analysis of drill cuttings. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate the possibility of using digital cuttings analysis and rock physics for reservoir properties evaluation. The carbonate samples of core and cuttings were simultaneously collected from the same intervals during the drilling of deviated wells in the Carboniferous reservoir of the oil deposit in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Based on the core analysis using the optical study of thin sections and XRD, we investigated sedimentological and mineralogical features and classified all lithotypes of well intervals. The standard samples were produced from all defined facies and their reservoir properties were studied in routine tests. The largest cuttings from each well interval were separated and their structures were compared using mCT with core subsamples of the same intervals. We assessed the changes of cuttings structure occurring in the drilling process, which include the colmatation of the pore space with drilling fluid and disintegrated rock particles and the formation of secondary fractures. Detailed analysis of cuttings from one well interval consisting of the border between the facies of high porous grainstones with packstones and dense micrite limestones demonstrated that high porous varieties were eroded in the drilling process. The analysis of chemical composition using XRF-mapping, XRD and SEM with EDS showed that most of the cuttings were constituted by disintegrated rock particles or form elements (e.g. separate fusulinids) cemented by drilling mud. However, more durable cuttings from dense micrite limestones facies were generally retained their dominant calcite composition and original rock structure, with only secondary fractures. Finally, we analyzed pore space properties and performed digital simulations of wave propagation velocities to compare the characteristics of these cuttings and core subsamples from this lithotype, scanned in the same mCT settings. The results demonstrate close characteristics of porosity 0.08-0.6%, dominant pore sizes 1-60 mm and velocities Vp = 6130-6240 m/s, Vs = 3180-3230 m/s. However, the comparison of obtained values with measured on standard samples shows a significant difference, which is caused by deviation from REV. The potential use of cuttings for assessing reservoir and petrophysical properties can be possible in case of provision with the factors of cuttings structure alteration, representativity of samples, as well as optimization for these purposes of the drilling process with cuttings selection.

We evaluated invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) during 8 years of infant pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) programs using 10-valent (PCV10) and 13-valent (PCV13) vaccines in 10 countries in Europe. IPD incidence declined during 2011-2014 but increased during 2015-2018 in all age groups. From the 7-valent PCV period to 2018, IPD incidence declined by 42% in children = 65 years of age; non-PCV13 serotype incidence increased by 111%, 63%, and 84%, respectively, for these groups. Trends were similar in countries using PCV13 or PCV10, despite different serotype distribution.Serotypes included in the 15-valent PCV represented one third of cases and those in the 20-valent PCVs two thirds of cases in children 65 years of age in 2018. Non-PCV13 serotype increases reduced the overall effect of childhood PCV10/PCV13 programs on IPD. New vaccines providing broader serotype protection are needed.

—Variations in the magnetic and geochemical properties of the sediments of Lake Bolshoe Yarovoe (Altai Territory) were studied. The data were derived from five core columns (up to 4.5 m long) covering a time interval of more than 8000 years. In addition, coercive spectra were obtained for 792 samples taken every 2 cm. Coercive spectra were then used to identify soft magnetic (10–15 mT) and hard magnetic (35–50 mT) components. The soft magnetic component is detrital, and the hard magnetic component is biogenic, which is confirmed by microscopic studies. Moreover, the samples contain micrometeorite particles. Variations in geochemical properties allow reconstruction of the environmental history of the lake. Sediments in the lower part of the section vary both in the content of ferrimagnetic components and in geochemical properties, which indicates a sharp environmental change between ~6100 and ~7600 years ago. Quasiperiodic alternation of warm (dry) and cool (humid) periods is observed higher in the section, between ~4100 and ~6100 years ago. The variations in the magnetic components are consistent with the environmental changes and can be used for the historical reconstruction.

The objective of this study is to provide a well-dated point for a future palaeosecular variation (PSV) reference curve for western Russia. For this purpose archaeomagnetic and magnetic property analyses were carried out on a pottery kiln unearthed at the UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient Bolgar, having a rather precise age dating. The archaeological context provided an age between 1340 and 1360 C.E. The characteristic remanence vector was determined through alternating field demagnetisation and Thellier-Thellier palaeointensity experiments. Some innovations were introduced regarding palaeointensity. The check testing the equality of blocking and unblocking temperature was redefined. This allowed waiving the commonly used additional zero-field cooling steps during the Thellier-Thellier experiment. Another innovation concerns the calculation of archaeointensity at structure level. A Bayesian approach was introduced for averaging individual specimen archaeointensities using a prior probability distribution of unknown uncertainties. Next, an additional prior probability distribution was used to correct for cooling rate effects. This resulted in a lower uncertainty compared to common practice and in eluding time consuming cooling rate experiments. The complex magnetic mineralogy consists of maghaemite, multi-domain haematite and Al-substituted haematite. Some samples contained also some non-stoichiometric magnetite. The magnetic mineralogy was determined through hysteresis loops, backfield and remanence decay curves, measurements of the frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility and through low temperature magnetisation curves. Accompanying high-temperature thermomagnetic analyses revealed an excellent thermo-chemical stability of the studied specimens. Directions obtained from alternating field demagnetisation and those extracted from archaeointensity experiments are congruent and have low uncertainties. The obtained archaeomagnetic results are fairly in agreement with global geomagnetic field models and contemporary PSV data of the wider area. The geomagnetic field vector obtained for ancient Bolgar is of high quality, deserving thus its inclusion in a future PSV reference curve for European Russia.

Metal tallates are generating a considerable interest as catalysts for thermaly enhanced oil recovery. Meanwhile, In-situ combustion is considered a promising thermally enhanced oil recovery method, it is still viewed as a complicated process due to its multiphasic, multicomponent and multistep reactions occurring within it. In this study we investigated the impact of Mn@Cu tallate on heavy oil oxidation process in order to highlight its effect on stabilizing combustion front using differential scanning calorimetry combined with isoconversional principle for calculating the kinetic parameters of the process. The obtained data have showed that Mn@Cu tallate can play an important role in stabilizing combustion front of in-situ combustion where it decreased the energy of activation of low temperature (LTO) and high temperature oxidation (HTO) regions. As a result, the effective reaction rate constants in both regions increased respectively as well.

In this research, combustion behaviour of three crude oils with different °API gravities was analysed. The thermogravimetric analyser (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) experiments were performed using three different heating rates (2, 5, and 10 °C min−1) under air atmosphere. The reaction regions, burn-out temperatures, and peak temperatures were determined accordingly. Two main reaction regions, particularly the low-temperature oxidation (LTO) and high-temperature oxidation (HTO) reactions, were figured out in TGA and DSC curves, which suggested exothermic behaviour. Kinetic parameters of the crude oils were determined using model free methods (Ozawa–Flynn–Wall, OFW, and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose, KAS), which allows the calculation of kinetic properties at progressive conversion degrees without the requirement of any reaction models and f(α) estimations. The variation in activation energy with respect to the conversion degree pointed out that the LTO reaction stage can be subdivided into three subzones. The results indicated that the activation energies were changing depending on the conversion degree, which is an indication of complex reaction mechanisms. The change in activation energy with respect to conversion degree showed slight variation for heavy crude oil compared with that in light crude oil.

A nickel-based catalyst precursor has been synthesized for in-situ upgrading of heavy crude oil that is capable of increasing the efficiency of steam stimulation techniques. The precursor activation occurs due to the decomposition of nickel tallate under hydrothermal conditions. The aim of this study is to analyze the efficiency of in-situ catalytic upgrading of heavy oil from laboratory scale experiments to the field-scale implementation in Boca de Jaruco reservoir. The proposed catalytic composition for in-reservoir chemical transformation of heavy oil and natural bitumen is composed of oil-soluble nickel compound and organic hydrogen donor solvent. The nickel-based catalytic composition in laboratory-scale hydrothermal conditions at 300°С and 90 bars demonstrated a high performance; the content of asphaltenes was reduced from 22% to 7 wt.%. The viscosity of crude oil was also reduced by three times. The technology for industrial-scale production of catalyst precursor was designed and the first pilot batch with a mass of 12 ton was achieved. A «Cyclic steam stimulation» technology was modified in order to deliver the catalytic composition to the pay zones of Boca de Jaruco reservoir (Cuba). The active forms of catalyst precursors are nanodispersed mixed oxides and sulfides of nickel. The pilot test of catalyst injection was carried out in bituminous carbonate formation M, in Boca de Jaruco reservoir (Cuba). The application of catalytic composition provided increase in cumulative oil production and incremental oil recovery in contrast to the previous cycle (without catalyst) is 170% up to date (the effect is in progress). After injection of catalysts, more than 200 samples from production well were analyzed in laboratory. Based on the physical and chemical properties of investigated samples and considering the excellent oil recovery coefficient it is decided to expand the industrial application of catalysts in the given reservoir. The project is scheduled on the fourth quarter of 2021.

At the present stage of the hydrocarbon production process, most of the unique and largest fields in the world are at a late stage of development. Despite the active development and policy of a decarbonised economy, the demand for liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons remains high, while of inevitably growing the number of mature fields. The Volga-Ural oil and gas province today is an old oil and gas producing region, most of the fields have already entered the final stage of development. However, through the introduction and development of new technologies for oil extraction, monitoring of production and localization of reserves, the life of the fields can be extended. One of these technologies is geochemical monitoring of well production. Its goal is to optimize the development of mature fields on the basis of promptly obtained information about the state of the wells using geochemical studies of the formation fluid, allowing timely implementation of the necessary measures. Geochemical studies allow identifying the source of fluid entering the well, determining a violation in the wellbore structure, checking the tightness of downhole equipment for separate operation, and performing an area analysis of the area development efficiency. This type of research is relevant both in giant fields with a large stock of production wells, often characterized from a geological point of view by multilayer structure, with technological complexity, packing, wear of equipment and strings, in some cases the impossibility of running gauge for research, and in fields with low depletion. The possibilities of geochemistry for solving local operational problems in wells are shown. Several hydrogeological complexes have been studied, the change in the properties of the produced water during the development process is described. The concepts of the geochemical conditions in the hydrocarbon deposits that existed earlier are changing due to the development of these objects as a dynamic system, continuous injection of different types of water into the reservoir, the use of enhanced oil recovery methods and other technogenic impact associated with the development of reserves. The digital revolution and the modern development of the industry marked the beginning of the creation of the Digital Atlas of Groundwater, the development of specialized algorithms that allow processing large amounts of data.
