Spatial and temporal modelling of parasite transmission and risk assessment require relevant spatial information at appropriate spatial and temporal scales. There is now a large literature that demonstrates the utility of satellite remote sensing and spatial modelling within geographical information systems (GIS) and firmly establishes these technologies as the key tools for spatial epidemiology. This review outlines the strength of satellite remotely sensed data for spatial mapping of landscape characteristics in relation to disease reservoirs, host distributions and human disease. It is suggested that current satellite technology can fulfill the spatial mapping needs of disease transmission and risk modelling, but that temporal resolution, which is a function of the satellite data acquisition characteristics, may be a limitating factor for applications requiring information about landscape or ecosystem dynamics. The potential of the Modis sensor for spatial epidemiology is illustrated with reference to mapping spatial and temporal vegetation dynamics and small mammal parasite hosts on the Tibetan plateau. Future research directions and priorities for landscape epidemiology are considered.

A terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) was used to measure canopy directional gap fraction distribution in forest stands in the Swiss National Park, eastern Switzerland. A scanner model was derived to determine the expected number of laser shots in all directions, and these data were compared with the measured number of laser hits to determine directional gap fraction at eight sampling points. Directional gap fraction distributions were determined from digital hemispherical photographs recorded at the same sampling locations in the forest, and these data were compared with distributions computed from the laser scanner data. The results showed that the measured directional gap fraction distributions were similar for both hemispherical photography and TLS data with a high degree of precision in the area of overlap of orthogonal laser scans. Three decades have passed since the launch of the first international satellite sensor programme designed for monitoring Earth's resources. Over this period, forest resources have come under increasing pressure, thus their management and use should be underpinned by information on their properties at a number of levels. This paper provides a comprehensive review of how satellite remote sensing has been used in forest resource assessment since the launch of the first Earth resources satellite sensor (ERTS) in 1972. The use of remote sensing in forest resource assessment provides three levels of information; namely (1) the spatial extent of forest cover, which can be used to assess the spatial dynamics of forest cover; (2) forest type and (3) biophysical and biochemical properties of forests. The assessment of forest information over time enables the comprehensive monitoring of forest resources. This paper provides a comprehensive review of how satellite remote sensing has been used to date and, building on these experiences, the future potential of satellite remote sensing of forest resources is highlighted. The larval form of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis causes a fatal liver infection in humans and has high prevalence in western China. The tapeworm lifecycle involves small mammal populations and canids, such as foxes and dogs. Human contact with infected canids may lead to the transmission of the worm to humans, causing the disease human alveolar echinococcosis. This paper introduces the tapeworm and reviews the current understanding of its transmission ecology in relation to each component of its lifecycle. Recent research indicates that landscape plays an important role in creating the necessary habitat conditions for natural transmission. Defining the landscape involves the use of satellite imagery, land cover classification and spatial analysis. The link between disease, remote sensing and landscape ecology is an expanding research area and potentially an important one in relation to Echinococcus multilocularis and alveolar echinococcosis.
