Abstract

Animal and plant remains recovered from two archaeological sites in Iași city (NE Romania) were analyzed in this work. The aim of this study was to contribute to the economic and environmental evaluation of an old urban settlement. The analyzed sites, both of value in archaeological preventive research, are dated to the 18th–19th centuries. The archaeozoological analysis consisted of anatomical, taxonomic, and taphonomic identifications, quantification, estimations of age at slaughter and sex, and osteometry. The results revealed that the animal remains are of domestic origin, as indicated by traces of butchering, and can be mainly described in terms of their frequencies (i.e., number of identified specimens and minimum number of individuals), selection for slaughter, morphology, and size. The results show that animal husbandry (e.g., cattle, sheep/goat, pig, and horse) had significant importance in the economy of the settlement, and cattle were preferred for consumption. Few remains were identified for wild mammals (i.e., red deer, wild boar, and hare), birds, and mollusks. The phytolith analysis indicated that some plant resources were used in the economy of this settlement. 3. Paleorecords of Domesticated and Wild Grapevine in Romania: a Review

Abstract

This paper reviews the, so far available, paleorecords of Vitis sylvestris C.C. Gmel and Vitis vinifera L. from Romania. The study takes into consideration the presence of Vitis pollen from Holocene peat sediment sequences and archaeological context, but also the presence of macrorests from various archaeological sites that date from Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, and La Tene. Both paleobotanical arguments and archaeological discoveries support the theory that places the beggining of viticulture in Romania a few millenia ago, in Neolithic period. Also, written evidences (works of classical authors, epigraphical sources) confirm, indirectly, the presence of grapevine in La Tene period. Occurrences of Vitis vinifera and those of Vitis sylvestris manifest independently of the climate oscillations, being present both through colder and more humid episodes, as well as through drier and warmer events. Probably prehistoric communities have made a constant and deliberate effort, all along the Holocene, to maintain grapevine crops. 9. Un grup de morminte din Epoca Bronzului descoperit la Roman – Arhiepiscopie. Abordări pluridisciplinare

Abstract

(A group of Bronze-Age tombs discovered at Roman-Arhiepiscopie. A multidisciplinary approach) The present study describes several burial complexes, dated to the Bronze Age, as they were recently discovered in Roman (Neamţ County, Romania). Four tombs represent inhumation rites, and two of them are possible cenotaphs, which were identified during the research of a medieval necropolis (dated to the 15th-17th centuries). The archaeological inventory consists mainly of pottery (whole or fragmented vessels), with features of different neighboring cultural environments. Considering the geographic area within which the tombs were discovered‚ we presume they represent burial complexes of a Monteoru culture community, which also sustained contacts with representatives of the Komarov culture. Aiming to obtain further data regarding the burial ritual, several sediment samples were taken to be analyzed from an archaeobotanic perspective, for pollen and phytoliths. This type of analyses was also used in order to obtain data regarding the vegetal environment contemporary with the funerary context of that time. It was determined anthropologically that the skeletal remains come from four male individuals, of ages ranging from 20 to 50 years. The traits of these individuals suggest a mixture of nordic and europoid elements. Only in one case we identified mongoloid elements. Abstract

This paper represents an analysis of 2 vegetal associations: Sphagno girgensohnii-Piceetum Kuach 1954 and Ranunculo repentis-Calthetum palustris Chifu, Mânzu et Zamfirescu 2006, associations whichwere identified on the territory of the scientific reservation Tinovul Mare - Poiana Stampei (Romania). Each vegetal association is described in the phytocoenological table, as well as in the analysis of the bioforms, of the floristic elements and of the ecological indices. We have to underline the fact that these peat phytocoenoses are poor in species. It is a natural situation if we take into account the very restrictive stational conditions.

Abstract

Co-éditeurs scientifiques : Pescini, Valentina, Panetta, Alessandro, Py-Saragaglia, Vanessa; International audience; Over the last three decades, worldwide forests have become increasingly the focus of societal and scientific interest. The critical ecosystem services they provide are considered as key elements to mitigate harmful effects of global changes. Most of recent studies highlighted the highest effectiveness of the so-called ‘primary’, ‘natural’ and ‘old-growth forests’ in this struggle due to their specific features (biodiversity and carbon storage capacity). However, in Europe, these forests which represent less than 1% of total forest cover are threatened by unsustainable human activity. Mainly based on pure ecological investigations, most of recent studies have rarely integrated human dimensions so far. Several outstanding issues remain to be addressed about the real nature of the “remaining natural European forests”. Tackling this issue is crucial to know which forest must be conserved and how. In order to improve (i) knowledge about and (ii) conservation and /or sustainable management of such forests, we carried out an integrative and innovative research combining natural, social and human science approaches on a recently classified UNESCO primary beech forest located in the Maramureş county (Eastern Carpathians, Romania). First results highlighted that far from being untouched, this current high-value forest results from a long-term co-evolution with local communities. It implies a deeper understanding of the complex interaction between ecological and anthropogenic legacies is mandatory to improve and grant the preservation and sustainability of old-growth forests.

International audience; Les forêts séculaires des Carpates orientales, poumon vert de l'Europe, sont aujourd'hui cernées par des coupes rases entrainant l'érosion des écosystèmes, de la biodiversité et entravant les usages traditionnels et les services écosystémiques aux populations. Une estimation scientifique menée au début des années 2000 des vieilles forêts dans les Carpates roumaines a montré qu'elles constituaient 3,5 % de la couverture forestière totale, ce qui est plus que dans tout autre pays d'Europe centrale. Elles sont le fruit d'une histoire millénaire et non linéaire étroitement liée au développement des activités humaines. Elles ont connu différents régimes d'exploitation inhérents à l'évolution des usages, des pratiques industrielles et des politiques de gestion. La zone d'étude du projet a été choisie, dans la région des Maramures, pour sa longue histoire industrielle et la présence de la vieille forêt de Strâmbu Baiut, sur la rivière Lapus, classée en 2017 par l'UNESCO (Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1133/), qui s'étend sur une superficie de 598 ha. La présence de plusieurs grandes mines anciennes dans cette zone suppose des phases de pression très fortes sur la ressource ligneuse qui pourraient être comparables à l'actuelle. Or, tandis que les études se multiplient pour montrer le démantèlement récent et rapide des vieilles forêts, leurs dynamiques et trajectoires historiques restent peu connues. Cet état de fait résulte notamment d'une faible coopération entre les disciplines. Pour éviter cet écueil et faire face à l'urgence, les projets FORETEXIL (AAP OASIC CNRS, 2017-2019), SAFE NATURE (MSH-Toulouse, 2018) et URGENSES (INRA, 2018) ont rassemblés un consortium interdisciplinaire de chercheurs français et roumains possédant l'expertise et le savoir-faire pour dresser un diagnostic rapide de ces vieilles forêts. Ces projets visaient d'abord à caractériser leur état actuel, puis à reconstruire à très haute résolution spatiotemporelle, le long d'un gradient altitudinal, leur évolution holocène (en termes de structure, composition et cycles sylvicoles et sylvigénétiques). Cette communication propose de présenter : i) la démarche interdisciplinaire originale mise en place, qui s'appuie d'une part sur la paléoécologie, l'archéologie, l'écologie historique et la dendrochronologie et d'autre part, sur une évaluation sociale, économique et écologique de la biodiversité et des services écosystémiques actuels ; ii) les premiers résultats obtenus sur l'identification des phases récentes et passées de rupture des socio-écosystèmes, le degré de naturalité des forêts... En effet, seule la compréhension de leur état actuel et ancien et des seuils de vulnérabilités au-delà desquels la perte de biodiversité et de l'équilibre paysager devient irréversible, aidera à orienter efficacement les politiques publiques de gestion locale à l'avenir.

Abstract

The paper analyses archaeozoological remains originating from the Noviodunum fortress in South-Eastern Romania, Tulcea County, where archaeological research indicates an extensive civil settlement with Roman and Medieval levels, but also few Getic discoveries. Animal remains are described in terms of their frequencies based on the number of identified specimens and on the minimum number of individuals. The archaeozoological data highlight a preference for domestic mammals (cattle, sheep/goat, pig), but also for wild mammals and fish. A summary of archaeozoological studies in different sites of Noviodunum fortress shows variation in the assemblages. The results of the Principal Component Analysis suggest that in the Roman period cattle was the preferred for consumption, and later, in Middle Ages, sheep/goat sheep was eaten more [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Animal remains and phytoliths deriving from the Early Neolithic site of Rapoltu Mare-Seghi (Hunedoara County, Romania) are used for obtaining data regarding the palaeoenvironment of a Starčevo-Cris community. Bioarchaeological information in this paper is important considering that the beginning of the neolithization in the southwest Transylvania is still poorly documented. Archaeozoological analysis offers information on the settlement palaeoeconomy and phytoliths are reliable markers for the vegetal environment in this area. The most animal remains come from domestic mammals, especially cattle (Bos taurus) and sheep / goat (Ovis aries / Capra hircus); few remains of dog (Canis familiaris) and wild mammals (aurochs -- Bos primigenius and wild boar -- Sus scrofa) have been also identified. The absence of pig (Sus domesticus) suggests that the Starčevo-Cris community of Rapoltu Mare-Seghi had a high mobility, specific to shepherds. Phytoliths assemblages show the net dominance of grasses, several subfamilies of Poaceae family being attested. ELONGATE DENDRITIC forms are quite well represented, suggesting an anthropogenic accumulation; but it does not just mean that the cereal cultivation was practiced by the Rapoltu Mare-Seghi community. Abstract

International audience; In this article we document the evolution of the internal area of the Danube Delta (i.e. the blocked delta) starting from the geo-archaeological and geomorphological investigations performed at Mila 23 district, following the discovery of the oldest human settlement in the Delta. The in-site and out-site field work and coring allowed us to specify the delta's early stages of evolution from 5600 to 4000 CAL BC. During this period, the site evolves as a freshwater bay-head delta flowing into a huge lagoon isolated from the open sea by Letea-Caraorman spits. The rapid sedimentation rate in the lagoon is interpreted as a response to base-level rise and overflooding as a result of humid conditions during 6-5 ky RCC, leading to the partial submersion of the site and probably to its abandonment around 4450 CAL BC.

Phytoliths and animal remains deriving from the Chalcolithic site of Răucești (Neamț County, Romania) are used for obtaining a set of data regarding the palaeoenvironment and the resources of subsistence that were available for the Cucutenian community from this settlement. The information obtained in this study is very important considering the precarious preservation state of the archaeological site that has been destroyed in a systematic manner due to agrarian works. Phytolith analysis discloses the dominance of spontaneous grasses, but the results also highlight the presence of grains inside the site. Thus, an open environment is delineated around the settlement, an image that is also testified by the archaezoological data. The analysis of animal remains brings in new clues regarding the palaeoeconomy of the settlement: animal husbandry and hunting were practiced by the Cucutenian community of Răucești. Abstract

Research of pollen, spores, phytoliths and animal remains was performed in the Chalcolithic settlement (Cucuteni culture, Vth-IVth millennia cal B.C.) of Costeşti (Iaşi County, Romania). Archaeobotanical data are correlated with those of archaeozoology in order to achieve an understanding of the site formation processes, the economic and environmental contexts of the Chalcolithic settlement. Palynological analysis testified the presence of deciduous trees such as linden and oak. Willow, alder and birch probably inhabited banks of river whose course goes right near the site. Regarding the herbaceous plants, there were identified both spontaneous taxa and other taxa which could be cultivated. Cereal inflorescence phytoliths have been identified. In the archaeozoological sample, butchering and the manufacturing originated the fragmentation of remains. The majority of animal remains are from domestic mammals, with the predominance of sheep/goat, followed by cattle and pig. The hunting of wild mammals is less important in the food provisioning system; as game species, red deer, wild boar and aurochs are dominant. Harvesting of molluscs is testified by a very small number of remains. According to these data, the economy of the Chalcolithic settlement from Costeşti was based on the plant cultivation and animal husbandry, and also on forest and even aquatic resources. Abstract

Soils can be a means of reconstructing past climatic and biotic conditions in which human settlements have formed and developed over time. On the other hand, archaeological data provides original information for understanding the formation, evolution and the spatial distribution of soils in natural conditions and under human influence. The main purpose of our current research is to investigate and integrate the results of pedological, palynological and archaeozoological analyses with archaeological findings in several Neo-Eneolithic communities from NE Romania, an area largely covered by the Cucuteni culture. The paper outlines the importance of correlative studies regarding chemical and physical characteristics of soil (such humus, phosphorous, potassium, granulometry etc.), pollen data and osteological materials in archaeological sites, an approach which can lead to a more comprehensive description of the Neolithic populations inside the study area, the identification and interpretation of human impact on soil and the relationship between humans and their environment. Our paper aims at presenting and discussing the discovery of Lithospermum officinale L. and Buglossoides purpurocaerulea (L.) I. M. Johnston seeds deposits from archaeological contexts. The nutlets deposits that we discuss here were found in three prehistoric sites belonging to the Cucuteni Culture (Vth-IVth millennia CAL. B.C.): Izvoare-Piatra Neamț (Neamț County), Poduri-Dealul Ghindaru (Bacău County), Frumușica (Neamț County). The two species are used for their anti-inflammatory, contraceptive or antitoxic properties. However, an in-depth contextual analysis of the various discovery contexts belonging to the Cucuteni culture, leading to a differentiation between the known deposits, allows us to explore different meanings of this category of archaeological finds, such as display of social status or involvement in magical/healing rituals. Abstract

We present here the results of pollen analysis of one sequence of about 60 cm length, originating from sediments of Hautes-Fagnes peat bogs (Eastern Belgium). 49 pollen spectra reflect the local vegetation evolution and also the evolution of the forestry surroundings. The results of these investigations are correlated to the results of other studies previously carried out in the area. Our data suggests human occupation and intensive land use in the region. Aspects regarding a Roman/Merovingian paved road, at present covered by a layer of peat that can reach 1 m thickness in some places, are also debated in the present paper.
