1. Gold nanoparticle-based eco-friendly ink for electrode patterning on flexible substrates

Abstract

Au nanoparticles functionalized by short poly(ethylene glycol) chain ligands were suspended in a hydroalcoholic medium. This suspension was then printed by inkjet onto a Kapton® substrate. Gold electrodes consisting of four stacked printed layers exhibited a conductivity of (1 ± 0.1) × 107 S/m, close to that of Au bulk, after low-temperature thermal annealing. The electrochemical behaviour with respect to heterogeneous electron transfer reactions and the reactivity towards thiol chemisorption are identical to those obtained when a conventional polycrystalline Au electrode is used.

Abstract

This review first recalls the basic functioning principles of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) then focuses on the transduction mechanisms applicable to OECTs. Materials constituting the active semiconducting part are reviewed, from the historical conducting polymers (polyaniline, polypyrrole) to the actual gold standard, poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene: polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS), as well as the methods used to fabricate these transistors. The review then focuses on applications of OECTs for the detection of small molecules and more particularly of metabolites, with a distinction between enzymatic and non-enzymatic transduction pathways. Finally, the few patents registered on the topic of OECT-based biosensors are reviewed, and new tracks of improvement are proposed.

Abstract

A reproducible electro-assisted method is proposed to follow the influence of different sulfur-based anchoring groups on the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of SAM formation on gold electrodes. This has been made possible thanks to the preparation of several molecules containing various anchoring groups (thiol, thioester, acyclic and cyclic disulfides, thiosulfonate) while preserving the same spacer redox head group. In this paper we focus on the question of a substantial difference between SAMs derived from either alkylthiols or disulfides using cyclic voltammetry. The comparison of equilibrium surface coverage, affinity constant toward gold surface and stability suggest a decisive role of the nature of the anchoring group in the formation of the monolayers. Moreover, a significant difference of the desorption behavior of SAMs on gold, pre-formed from either thiol or disulfide, has clearly been demonstrated.

Abstract

A reproducible electro-assisted method is proposed for the fast and well-controlled formation of mixed binary 1,2-dithiolane-based SAMs on gold electrode from micromolar adsorbate solution concentrations. This has been made possible through the combined use of 1,2-dithiolane derivatives having comparable surface binding affinities, and the application of a moderate cathodic potential to the electrode until an equilibrium binary SAM coverage is reached. Dithiolane derivatives containing distinct redox-active ferrocenyl groups were synthesized and used for simultaneous and quantitative electrochemical monitoring the formation of binary SAMs. The corresponding separate electrochemical responses of each component in the mixed layer allowed for the determination of the adsorbate ratio, affording the overall as well as the individual chemisorption kinetics. Regardless of the different adsorption kinetics, the resulting adsorbate ratios at equilibrium in the SAM were found to be the same as in solution. When reporting the equilibrium surface concentration of the adsorbate as a function of its mole fraction in solution, a clear-cut linear relationship was obtained, making this method particularly useful for controlling and predicting the chemical composition of functional binary SAMs on gold surfaces
