A $\delta$-colouring of the point set of a block design is said to be {\em weak} if no block is monochromatic. The {\em weak chromatic number} $\chi(S)$ of a block design $S$ is the smallest integer $\delta$ such that $S$ has a weak $\delta$-colouring. It has previously been shown that any Steiner triple system has weak chromatic number at least $3$ and that for each $v\equiv 1$ or $3\pmod{6}$ there exists a Steiner triple system on $v$ points that has weak chromatic number $3$. Moreover, for each integer $\delta \geq 3$ there exist infinitely many Steiner triple systems with weak chromatic number $\delta$. We consider colourings of the subclass of Steiner triple systems which are resolvable. We show that for each $v\equiv 3\pmod{6}$ there exists a Kirkman triple system on $v$ points with weak chromatic number $3$. We also show that for each integer $\delta \geq 3$, there exist infinitely many Kirkman triple systems with weak chromatic number $\delta$. We close with several open problems.

We consider playing the game of Tic-Tac-Toe on block designs BIBD($v, k, \lambda$) and transversal designs TD($k, n$). Players take turns choosing points and the first player to complete a block wins the game. We show that triple systems, BIBD($v, 3, \lambda$), are a first player win if and only if $v \geq 5$. Further, we show that for $k = 2, 3$, TD($k, n$) is a first player win if and only if $n \geq k$. We also consider a weak version of the game, called Maker-Breaker, in which the second player wins if they can stop the first player from winning. In this case, we adapt known bounds for when either the first or second player can win on BIBD($v, k, 1$) and TD($k, n$), and show that for Maker-Breaker, BIBD($v, 4, 1$) is a first player win if and only if $v \geq 16$. We show that TD($4, 4$) is a second player win, and so the second player can force a draw in the regular game by playing the same strategy.

The generalized Oberwolfach problem asks for a decomposition of a graph $G$ into specified 2-regular spanning subgraphs $F_1,\ldots, F_k$, called factors. The classic Oberwolfach problem corresponds to the case when all of the factors are pairwise isomorphic, and $G$ is the complete graph of odd order or the complete graph of even order with the edges of a $1$-factor removed. When there are two possible factor types, it is called the Hamilton-Waterloo problem. In this paper we present a survey of constructive methods which have allowed recent progress in this area. Specifically, we consider blow-up type constructions, particularly as applied to the case when each factor consists of cycles of the same length. We consider the case when the factors are all bipartite (and hence consist of even cycles) and a method for using circulant graphs to find solutions. The generalized Oberwolfach problem asks for a factorization of the complete graph $K_v$ into prescribed $2$-factors and at most a $1$-factor. When all $2$-factors are pairwise isomorphic and $v$ is odd, we have the classic Oberwolfach problem, which was originally stated as a seating problem: given $v$ attendees at a conference with $t$ circular tables such that the $i$th table seats $a_i$ people and ${\sum_{i=1}^t a_i = v}$, find a seating arrangement over the $\frac{v-1}{2}$ days of the conference, so that every person sits next to each other person exactly once. In this paper we introduce the related {\em minisymposium problem}, which requires a solution to the generalized Oberwolfach problem on $v$ vertices that contains a subsystem on $m$ vertices. That is, the decomposition restricted to the required $m$ vertices is a solution to the generalized Oberwolfach problem on $m$ vertices. In the seating context above, the larger conference contains a minisymposium of $m$ participants, and we also require that pairs of these $m$ participants be seated next to each other for $\left\lfloor\frac{m-1}{2}\right\rfloor$ of the days. When the cycles are as long as possible, i.e.\ $v$, $m$ and $v-m$, a flexible method of Hilton and Johnson provides a solution. We use this result to provide further solutions when $v \equiv m \equiv 2 \pmod 4$ and all cycle lengths are even. In addition, we provide extensive results in the case where all cycle lengths are equal to $k$, solving all cases when $m\mid v$, except possibly when $k$ is odd and $v$ is even., Comment: 25 pages

The game of tic-tac-toe is well known. In particular, in its classic version it is famous for being unwinnable by either player. While classically it is played on a grid, it is natural to consider the effect of playing the game on richer structures, such as finite planes. Playing the game of tic-tac-toe on finite affine and projective planes has been studied previously. While the second player can usually force a draw, for small orders it is possible for the first player to win. In this regard, a computer proof that tic-tac-toe played on the affine plane of order 4 is a first player win has been claimed. In this note we use techniques from the theory of latin squares and transversal designs to give a human verifiable, explicit proof of this fact., Comment: 12 pages

We introduce the game of Surrounding Cops and Robbers on a graph, as a variant of the original game of Cops and Robbers. In contrast to the original game in which the cops win by occupying the same vertex as the robber, they now win by occupying each of the robber's neighbouring vertices. We denote by $\sigma(G)$ the {\em surrounding cop number} of $G$, namely the least number of cops required to surround a robber in the graph $G$. We present a number of results regarding this parameter, including general bounds as well as exact values for several classes of graphs. Particular classes of interest include product graphs, graphs arising from combinatorial designs, and generalised Petersen graphs.

Let $K_v^*$ denote the complete graph $K_v$ if $v$ is odd and $K_v-I$, the complete graph with the edges of a 1-factor removed, if $v$ is even. Given non-negative integers $v, M, N, \alpha, \beta$, the Hamilton-Waterloo problem asks for a $2$-factorization of $K^*_v$ into $\alpha$ $C_M$-factors and $\beta$ $C_N$-factors. Clearly, $M,N\geq 3$, $M\mid v$, $N\mid v$ and $\alpha+\beta = \lfloor\frac{v-1}{2}\rfloor$ are necessary conditions. Very little is known on the case where $M$ and $N$ have different parities. In this paper, we make some progress on this case by showing, among other things, that the above necessary conditions are sufficient whenever $M|N$, $v>6N>36M$, and $\beta\geq 3$.

An Orthogonally resolvable Matching Design OMD$(n, k)$ is a partition of the edges the complete graph $K_n$ into matchings of size $k$, called blocks, such that the blocks can be resolved in two different ways. Such a design can be represented as a square array whose cells are either empty or contain a matching of size $k$, where every vertex appears exactly once in each row and column. In this paper we show that an OMD$(n.k)$ exists if and only if $n \equiv 0 \pmod{2k}$ except when $k=1$ and $n = 4$ or $6$.

A $2t$-cycle system of order $v$ is a set $\mathcal{C}$ of cycles whose edges partition the edge-set of $K_v-I$ (i.e., the complete graph minus the $1$-factor $I$). If $v\equiv 0 \pmod{2t}$, a set of $v/2t$ vertex-disjoint cycles of $\mathcal{C}$ is a parallel class. If $\mathcal{C}$ has no parallel classes, we call such a system unparalleled. We show that there exists an unparalleled $2t$-cycle system of order $v \equiv 0 \pmod{2t}$ if and only if $v>2t>2$., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

In this paper, we examine a class of doubly resolvable combinatorial objects. Let $t, k, \lambda, s$ and $v$ be nonnegative integers, and let $X$ be a set of $v$ symbols. A generalized Howell design, denoted $t$-$GHD_{k}(s,v;\lambda)$, is an $s\times s$ array, each cell of which is either empty or contains a $k$-set of symbols from $X$, called a block, such that: (i) each symbol appears exactly once in each row and in each column (i.e.\ each row and column is a resolution of $X$); (ii) no $t$-subset of elements from $X$ appears in more than $\lambda$ cells. Particular instances of the parameters correspond to Howell designs, doubly resolvable balanced incomplete block designs (including Kirkman squares), doubly resolvable nearly Kirkman triple systems, and simple orthogonal multi-arrays (which themselves generalize mutually orthogonal Latin squares). Generalized Howell designs also have connections with permutation arrays and multiply constant-weight codes. In this paper, we concentrate on the case that $t=2$, $k=3$ and $\lambda=1$, and write $GHD(s,v)$. In this case, the number of empty cells in each row and column falls between 0 and $(s-1)/3$. Previous work has considered the existence of GHDs on either end of the spectrum, with at most 1 or at least $(s-2)/3$ empty cells in each row or column. In the case of one empty cell, we correct some results of Wang and Du, and show that there exists a $GHD(n+1,3n)$ if and only if $n \geq 6$, except possibly for $n=6$. In the case of two empty cells, we show that there exists a $GHD(n+2,3n)$ if and only if $n \geq 6$. Noting that the proportion of cells in a given row or column of a $GHD(s,v)$ which are empty falls in the interval $[0,1/3)$, we prove that for any $\pi \in [0,5/18]$, there is a $GHD(s,v)$ whose proportion of empty cells in a row or column is arbitrarily close to $\pi$., Comment: 31 pages; 1 figure; 2 appendices
