Abstract

We have developed an algorithm (x2abundance) to derive the lunar surface chemistry from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data for the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) experiment. The algorithm converts the observed XRF line fluxes to elemental abundances with uncertainties. We validated the algorithm in the laboratory using high Z elements (20 < Z < 30) published in Athiray et al. (2013). In this paper, we complete the exercise of validation using samples containing low Z elements, which are also analogous to the lunar surface composition (ie., contains major elements between 11 < Z < 30). The paper summarizes results from XRF experiments performed on Lunar simulant (JSC-1A) and anorthosite using a synchrotron beam excitation. We also discuss results from the validation of x2abundance using Monte Carlo simulation (GEANT4 XRF simulation).

Abstract

Background: The native goat populations in southern Odisha viz. Narayanpatna, Malkangiri and Ganjam were characterized phenotypically in the present study. Ganjam goats stood apart from other populations due to their large, pointed horns and stature. Odisha state has 30 districts and 10 different agro-climatic zones. Methods: The present study area is under North Eastern ghat and Eastern ghat high land agro climatic zones. An extensive management system is used to raise all the goats with a flock size varying from 6 to 45. The body weight was recorded from birth to 12 months at an interval of 3 months. Result: The average adult body weight from these 3 goat populations was 17.39±0.20, 16.31±0.17, 16.39±0.20 kg for Ganjam, Malkangiri and Narayanpatna goats, respectively revealing that Ganjam goats were heavier than the other two populations. The average age at sexual maturity and kidding interval was recorded as 318.24±5.24 and 312.06±1.28 days, 236.76±6.23 and 223.21±0.88 days, 218.34±4.28 and 218.22±0.76 days for Ganjam, Narayanpatna and Malkangiri goats, respectively revealing that Ganjam goats had significantly higher estimates than other two types. Males of all goat types were found to have higher body weight than the female counterparts beyond 3 months of age and found to be conspicuous at later age. This information on the physical characterization and production potentials may be helpful in developing further breed improvement strategies and breed registration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. Does Feeder Type Influence the Performance of Stable and Mixed Bucks in Stall Fed System?

Abstract

Present investigation was conducted to assess the effect of two feeder types (hexagonal vs. linear) on performance of stable (before mixing) and mixed Beetal bucks. In first trial, stable bucks were studied for 4- week period at hexagonal (BH) vs. linear (BL) feeder (n=6 each). In second trial, after rearing 4 weeks on two feeder types, half (3) of the bucks {1 high, 1 intermediate and 1 low ranked in social hierarchy} from both the groups were interchanged to form two mixed groups (hexagonal and linear mixed bucks i.e. BHM and BLM), which were observed for 2 weeks period. Bucks were observed for weight gain, body condition score (BCS), daily feed intake, feed wastage, injuries and blood biochemical parameters. Blood samples were collected at weekly interval before regrouping period and at day 1 (regrouping), 3, 7 and 14 after regrouping. Body weight (BW) and dimensions of adult bucks had no influence of feeder type during premixing as well as post-mixing. Feed intake as well as wastage (green fodder) too did not differ statistically though overall feed wastage was numerically higher at hexagonal feeder. Injuries and lameness incidences were relatively more at hexagonal feeder (BH : BL :: 1 : 0 and BHM : BLM :: 3 : 1). Blood biochemical indicators of stress did not differ between the groups. Stable and regrouped Beetal bucks had similar performance indicators at both types of feeders with minor welfare advantages at linear feeder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
