The key challenge in advancing multivalent-ion batteries lies in finding suitable intercalation hosts. Open-tunnel oxides, featuring one-dimensional channels or nanopores, show promise for enabling effective ion transport. However, the vast range of compositional possibilities renders traditional experimental and quantum-based methods impractical for large-scale studies. This work presents a generative AI framework that uses the Crystal Diffusion Variational Autoencoder (CDVAE) and a fine-tuned Large Language Model (LLM) to expedite the discovery of stable open-tunneled oxide materials for multivalent-ion batteries. By combining machine learning with data mining techniques, five promising transition metal oxide (TMO) structures are generated. These structures, known for forming open-tunnel oxide frameworks, are structurally validated through Density Functional Theory (DFT). The results show that the generated structures have lower formation energies compared to similar compositions in the Materials Project (MP) database, indicating improved thermodynamic stability. Additionally, the graph-based M3GNet model is employed to relax further generated structures, providing a more computationally efficient alternative to DFT. Machine learning-based predictions of formation energy, band gap, and energy above the hull refine the selection process, leading to the identification of materials with significant potential for real-world battery applications. This research demonstrates the power of generative AI in rapidly exploring the vast chemical space of TMOs, offering a new approach to discovering stable open-tunnel oxides for multivalent-ion batteries. Many biological and synthetic systems are suspensions of oriented, actively-moving components. Unlike in passive suspensions, the interplay between orientational order, active flows, and interactions with boundaries gives rise to fascinating new phenomena in such active suspensions. Here, we examine the paradigmatic example of a surface-attached drop of an active suspension (an "active drop"), which has so far only been studied in the idealized limit of thin drops. We find that such surface-attached active drops can exhibit a wide array of stable steady-state shapes and internal flows that are far richer than those documented previously, depending on boundary conditions and the strength of active stresses. We present the in-lab and on-sky performance for the upgraded 90 GHz focal plane of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS), which had four of its seven detector wafers updated during the austral winter of 2022. The update aimed to improve the transition-edge-sensor (TES) stability and bias range and to realize the high optical efficiency of the sensor design. Modifications included revised circuit terminations, electrical contact between the TES superconductor and the normal metal providing the bulk of the bolometer's heat capacity, and additional filtering on the TES bias lines. The upgrade was successful: 94% of detectors are stable down to 15% of the normal resistance, providing a wide overlapping range of bias voltages for all TESs on a wafer. The median telescope efficiency improved from $0.42^{+0.15}_{-0.22}$ to $0.60^{+0.10}_{-0.32}$ (68% quantiles). For the four upgraded wafers alone, median telescope efficiency increased to $0.65^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$. Given our efficiency estimate for the receiver optics, this telescope efficiency implies a detector efficiency exceeding $0.90$. Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) represents a significant challenge within Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), particularly in dynamic traffic scenarios where the network undergoes continuous changes. Integrating multiple modulation formats transforms it into Routing Modulation Level and Spectrum Assignment (RMLSA) problem, thereby making it more challenging. Traditionally, addressing the RSA problem involved identifying a fixed number of paths and subsequently allocating spectrum among them. Numerous heuristic and metaheuristic approaches have been proposed for RSA using this two-step methodology. However, solving for routing and assignment of spectrum independently is not recommended due to their interdependencies and their impact on resource utilization, fragmentation and bandwidth blocking probability. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to solve the RMLSA problem jointly in dynamic traffic scenarios, inspired by Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). This approach involves augmenting the network into an Auxiliary Graph and transforming conventional ACO into a constraint-based ACO variant that adapts to the constraints of EONs. This adaptation also includes an adaptive initiation process and an aggressive termination strategy aimed at achieving faster convergence. The majority of atomic nuclei have deformed shapes and nearly all these shapes are symmetric with respect to reflection. There are only a few reflection asymmetric pear-shaped nuclei that have been found in actinide and lanthanide regions, which have static octupole deformation. These nuclei possess an intrinsic electric dipole moment due to the shift between the center of charge and the center of mass. This manifests in the enhancement of the electric dipole transition rates. In this article, we report on the measurement of the lifetimes of the high spin levels of the two alternate parity bands in $^{100}$Ru through the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The estimated electric dipole transition rates have been compared with the calculated transition rates using the triaxial projected shell model without octupole deformation, and are found to be an order of magnitude enhanced. Thus, the observation of seven inter-leaved electric dipole transitions with enhanced rates establish $^{100}$Ru as possibly the first octupole deformed nucleus reported in the A $\approx$ 100 mass region.

The study of $\bar{B} \to D^* \tau {\bar{\nu}}_\tau$ angular distribution can be used to get information about new physics, which has been motivated by the presence of various $B$ anomalies. However, the inability to measure precisely the three-momentum of tau hinders this process, as the tau decay contains one or more undetected neutrinos. In this work, we present a measurable angular distribution of $\bar{B} \to D^* \tau {\bar{\nu}}_\tau$ by considering the additional decay $\tau \to \ell \nu_\tau \bar{\nu}_\ell$, where $\ell \in \{ e , \mu \}$. The full process used is $\bar{B} \to D^* (\to D \pi) \tau (\to \ell \nu_\tau \bar{\nu}_\ell) \bar{\nu}_\tau$, where only the $\ell$ and $D^*$ are reconstructed, and a fit to the experimental angular distribution of this process can be used to extract information on new physics parameters. To demonstrate, we generate simulated data for this process and perform a sensitivity study to obtain the expected statistical errors on new physics parameters from experiments in the near future. We obtained a sensitivity of the order of 5% for the right-handed current and around 6% for the tensor current. In addition, we use the recent lattice QCD data on $B \to D^*$ form factors and obtain correlations between form factors and new physics parameters., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures

Electron-magnon coupling reveals key insights into the interfacial properties between non-magnetic metals and magnetic insulators, influencing charge transport and spin dynamics. Here, we present temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy and magneto-transport measurements of few-layer graphene (FLG)/antiferromagnetic FePS\(_3\) heterostructures. The magnon mode in FePS\(_3\) softens below 40 K, and effective magnon stiffness decreases with cooling. Magnetotransport measurements show that FLG exhibits negative magnetoresistance (MR) in the heterostructure at low fields (\(\pm 0.2 \, \text{T}\)), persisting up to 100 K; beyond this, MR transitions to positive. Notably, as layer thickness decreases, the coupling strength at the interface reduces, leading to a suppression of negative MR. Additionally, magnetodielectric measurements in the FLG/FePS\(_3\)/FLG heterostructure show an upturn at temperatures significantly below ($T_\text{N}$), suggesting a role for the magnon mode in capacitance, as indicated by hybridization between magnon and phonon bands in pristine FePS\(_3\) \textit{via} magnetoelastic coupling.

Each year, the production of synthetic dye wastewater reaches a trillion tons, posing a significant challenge to addressing water scarcity on a global level. Hence, the treatment of wastewater to prevent water scarcity is of prime importance, and failing to do so will increase ecotoxicological risks and human health. Textile wastewater contains harmful dye. Photocatalytic degradation of such dye-contaminated wastewater is crucial to purifying the dye-contaminated water. However, this process takes time, uses high-power lamps, and is expensive. Here, we report the effect of the concentration of precursor on the size and surface morphology of TiO2 nanostructures prepared by facile hydrothermal synthesis and its ability to perform as a photocatalyst to degrade the most common industrial textile dye, methylene blue (MB), under natural sunlight. The impact of particle size on the photocatalytic activity and photocarrier migration rate was thoroughly examined. Also, the effect of pH on adsorption and photocatalytic degradation has been evaluated in detail. With several optimized conditions, almost complete dye degradation was achieved within 40 minutes under the direct illumination of natural sunlight. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be correlated to the synergetic effect of a higher charge transfer mechanism, good catalytic active surface area availability (386 m2/g), and several optimized parameters that affect the reaction efficacy. Additionally, repeated use of NPs without sacrificing performance five times confirmed its stability and Sustainability as a promising candidate for large-scale industrial textile wastewater remedies.

BosonSampling is a popular candidate for near-term quantum advantage, which has now been experimentally implemented several times. The original proposal of Aaronson and Arkhipov from 2011 showed that classical hardness of BosonSampling is implied by a proof of the "Gaussian Permanent Estimation" conjecture. This conjecture states that $e^{-n\log{n}-n-O(\log n)}$ additive error estimates to the output probability of most random BosonSampling experiments are $\#P$-hard. Proving this conjecture has since become the central question in the theory of quantum advantage. In this work we make progress by proving that $e^{-n\log n -n - O(n^\delta)}$ additive error estimates to output probabilities of most random BosonSampling experiments are $\#P$-hard, for any $\delta>0$. In the process, we circumvent all known barrier results for proving the hardness of BosonSampling experiments. This is nearly the robustness needed to prove hardness of BosonSampling -- the remaining hurdle is now "merely" to show that the $n^\delta$ in the exponent can be improved to $O(\log n).$ We also obtain an analogous result for Random Circuit Sampling. Our result allows us to show, for the first time, a hardness of classical sampling result for random BosonSampling experiments, under an anticoncentration conjecture. Specifically, we prove the impossibility of multiplicative-error sampling from random BosonSampling experiments with probability $1-e^{-O(n)}$, unless the Polynomial Hierarchy collapses., Comment: 41 pages, 6 figures

Rare-earth diantimonides display intriguing ground states often associated with structural order, which can be manipulated in thin film geometries. In this study, we report epitaxial synthesis of one such compound, YbSb$_{2}$, on III-V substrates using molecular-beam epitaxy. The synthesized thin films exhibit large, non-saturating, linear magnetoresistance across a wide magnetic field range. Additionally, they demonstrate superconducting properties, with a critical temperature of $\approx$ 1.025 K and a critical field of $\approx$ 83.85 Oe, consistent with the reports in bulk single crystals. While YbSb$_{2}$ has been classified as a Type-I superconductor in its bulk form, our findings provide evidence of a mixed state in the epitaxial thin films. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of certain functionals involving higher powers of a scalar quantity $F$ under Bernard List's extended Ricci flow on a compact Riemannian manifold. By deriving explicit expressions for the time derivative of integrals of the form $\int_M F^n \cdot \frac{\partial F}{\partial t} \, d\mu$ for various powers $n$, we explore the intricate interplay between geometric quantities and scalar functions without making any assumptions about the manifold, the scalar field $\Phi$, or the function $u$.

The strongly polarizing political discourse in the U. S. implies that a small minority of the population, determining the outcome of the presidential elections in a few so called battleground-states, also determines the outcome of the overall election. Given the almost equal distributions of the electoral college members in the so-called blue and red states, the members elected from these battleground states would determine the election results. We build a kinetic exchange opinion model that takes into account the dynamical nature of the opinions of the individuals in the battleground states and the already determined core voters of the non-battleground states. In a fully connected graph, we consider the interaction among the population in the battleground states while the agents in the non-battleground states are assumed to have fixed opinions. We provide the analytical results and numerical simulations using realistic parameters from the opinion poll of the previous election's data. The proton capture cross-section of the least abundant proton-rich stable isotope of cadmium, $^{108}$Cd (abundance 0.89\%), has been measured near the Gamow window corresponding to a temperature range of 3-4 GK. The measurement of the $^{108}$Cd(p,$\gamma$)$^{109}$In reaction was carried out using the activation technique. The cross-section at the lowest energy point of 3T$_9$, E$_p$$^{lab}$= 2.28 MeV, has been reported for the first time. The astrophysical S-factor was measured in the energy range relevant to the astrophysical p-process, between E$_p$$^{cm}$= 2.29 and 6.79 MeV. The experimental results have been compared with theoretical predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations using TALYS-1.96. A calculated proton-optical potential was implemented to achieve better fitting, with different combinations of available nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions in TALYS-1.96. The calculations provided satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. The reaction rate was calculated using the calculated potential in TALYS-1.96 and compared with the values provided in the REACLIB database.

The PICOSEC-Micromegas (PICOSEC-MM) detector is a novel gaseous detector designed for precise timing resolution in experimental measurements. It eliminates time jitter from charged particles in ionization gaps by using extreme UV Cherenkov light emitted in a crystal, detected by a Micromegas photodetector with an appropriate photocathode. The first single-channel prototype tested in 150 GeV/c muon beams achieved a timing resolution below 25 ps, a significant improvement compared to standard Micropattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs). This work explores the specifications for applying these detectors in monitored neutrino beams for the ENUBET Project. Key aspects include exploring resistive technologies, resilient photocathodes, and scalable electronics. New 7-pad resistive detectors are designed to handle the particle flux. In this paper, two potential scenarios are briefly considered: tagging electromagnetic showers with a timing resolution below 30 ps in an electromagnetic calorimeter as well as individual particles (mainly muons) with about 20 ps respectively.

Recently, it was discovered that the proton structure at high energies exhibits maximal entanglement. This leads to a simple relation between the proton's parton distributions and the entropy of hadrons produced in high-energy inelastic interactions that has been experimentally confirmed. In this letter, we extend this approach to the production of jets. Here, the maximal entanglement predicts a relation between the jet fragmentation function and the entropy of hadrons produced in jet fragmentation. We test this relation using the ATLAS Collaboration data on jet production at the Large Hadron Collider and find good agreement between the prediction based on maximal entanglement within the jet and the data. This study represents the first use of the quantum entanglement framework in the experimental study of the hadronization process, offering a new perspective on the transition from perturbative to non-perturbative QCD. The following is an unedited version of two short articles that are forthcoming in Nature Chemical Engineering. Inspired by Purcell's classic lecture "Life at low Reynolds number", I discuss how scaling arguments, dimensional analysis, and fundamental concepts from chemical engineering science can be used to quantitatively describe microbial swimming -- thereby helping to better understand biological systems and inspiring new engineering advances in turn.

In astronomical observations, the estimation of distances from parallaxes is a challenging task due to the inherent measurement errors and the non-linear relationship between the parallax and the distance. This study leverages ideas from robust Bayesian inference to tackle these challenges, investigating a broad class of prior densities for estimating distances with a reduced bias and variance. Through theoretical analysis, simulation experiments, and the application to data from the Gaia Data Release 1 (GDR1), we demonstrate that heavy-tailed priors provide more reliable distance estimates, particularly in the presence of large fractional parallax errors. Theoretical results highlight the "curse of a single observation," where the likelihood dominates the posterior, limiting the impact of the prior. Nevertheless, heavy-tailed priors can delay the explosion of posterior risk, offering a more robust framework for distance estimation. The findings suggest that reciprocal invariant priors, with polynomial decay in their tails, such as the Half-Cauchy and Product Half-Cauchy, are particularly well-suited for this task, providing a balance between bias reduction and variance control., Comment: 26 pages

This study investigates the impact of High-intensity Long-Duration Continuous Auroral Electrojet Activity (HILDCAA) on the relativistic electrons in radiation belt of Earth. Utilizing data from Van Allen Probe mission of NASA, we conducted a comprehensive statistical analysis to understand the impact of HILDCAA events on the radiation belt fluxes. The super epoch analysis was carried out to determine the general response of L-shell, pitch angle, and energy-dependency of relativistic electrons to HILDCAAs. The analysis reveals a significant flux enhancement in the relativistic electron fluxes, predominantly occurring with a delay of 0 to 2 days following the onset of HILDCAA events. The general response indicates that the maximum energy of accelerated electrons reaches up to 6 MeV. Additionally, electrons with perpendicular pitch angles exhibit a significantly greater enhancement in flux and achieve higher maximum acceleration energies compared to those with parallel pitch angles. The observed time-delayed and pitch angle-dependent response related to the onset of HILDCAAs highlights the significant influence of wave-particle interactions, particularly in relation to ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves in this context. This is further supported by ground-based magnetometers and in-situ magnetic field observations from the RBSP probe, which demonstrated enhanced power of ULF waves during HILDCAA events. With millions of parameters and layers, these system-deep neural networks in particular-make it difficult for humans to comprehend accountability, prejudice, and justice are raised by the opaqueness of its decision-making process. AI has a lot of potential, but it also comes with a lot of difficulties and moral dilemmas. In the context of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), trust is crucial as it ensures that AI systems behave consistently, fairly, and ethically. In the present article, we explore XAI, reliable XAI, and several practical uses for reliable XAI. Once more, we go over the three main components-transparency, explainability, and trustworthiness of XAI-that we determined are pertinent in this situation. We present an overview of recent scientific studies that employ trustworthy XAI in various application fields. We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. We examine the impact of charged lepton Yukawa equilibration on leptogenesis during gravitational reheating. During the post-inflationary era, the inflaton field is assumed to oscillate around the minimum of a monomial potential, leading to the gravitational production of Standard Model (SM) particles, constituting the radiation bath. The heavy right-handed neutrinos (RHN), responsible for generating baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis, are also produced through graviton-mediated scattering of the homogeneous inflaton field and thermal bath, as well as from the the inverse decay of the bath particles. By considering both minimal and non-minimal gravitational contributions to SM, we demonstrate that flavour effects can be safely neglected in the minimal reheating scenario. However, with large non-minimal coupling, these effects may become important, depending on the choice of the RHN mass. We develop a new longitudinal count data regression model that accounts for zero-inflation and spatio-temporal correlation across responses. This project is motivated by an analysis of Iowa Fluoride Study (IFS) data, a longitudinal cohort study with data on caries (cavity) experience scores measured for each tooth across five time points. To that end, we use a hurdle model for zero-inflation with two parts: the presence model indicating whether a count is non-zero through logistic regression and the severity model that considers the non-zero counts through a shifted Negative Binomial distribution allowing overdispersion. To incorporate dependence across measurement occasion and teeth, these marginal models are embedded within a Gaussian copula that introduces spatio-temporal correlations. A distinct advantage of this formulation is that it allows us to determine covariate effects with population-level (marginal) interpretations in contrast to mixed model choices. Standard Bayesian sampling from such a model is infeasible, so we use approximate Bayesian computing for inference. This approach is applied to the IFS data to gain insight into the risk factors for dental caries and the correlation structure across teeth and time.

We investigate with numerical simulations the influence of topology and stiffness on macroscopic rheological properties of polymer melts consisting of unknotted, knotted or concatenated rings. While melts of flexible, knotted oligomer rings tend to be significantly more viscous than their unknotted counterparts, differences vanish in a low shear rate scenario with increasing degree of polymerization. Melts of catenanes consisting of two rings on the other hand are consistently more viscous than their unconcatenated counterparts. These topology-based differences in rheological properties can be exploited to segregate mixtures of otherwise chemically similar polymers, e.g., in microfluidic devices, which is demonstrated by exposing a blend of flexible knotted and unknotted oligomer rings to channel flow.

We present Movie Gen, a cast of foundation models that generates high-quality, 1080p HD videos with different aspect ratios and synchronized audio. We also show additional capabilities such as precise instruction-based video editing and generation of personalized videos based on a user's image. Our models set a new state-of-the-art on multiple tasks: text-to-video synthesis, video personalization, video editing, video-to-audio generation, and text-to-audio generation. Our largest video generation model is a 30B parameter transformer trained with a maximum context length of 73K video tokens, corresponding to a generated video of 16 seconds at 16 frames-per-second. We show multiple technical innovations and simplifications on the architecture, latent spaces, training objectives and recipes, data curation, evaluation protocols, parallelization techniques, and inference optimizations that allow us to reap the benefits of scaling pre-training data, model size, and training compute for training large scale media generation models. Ionospheric irregularities and associated scintillations under geomagnetically active/quiet conditions have detrimental effects on the reliability and performance of space- and ground-based navigation satellite systems, especially over the low-latitude region. The current work investigates the low-latitude ionospheric irregularities using the phase screen theory and the corresponding temporal Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis to present an estimate of the outer irregularity scale sizes over these locations. The study uses simultaneous L5 signal C/N$_o$ observations of NavIC (a set of GEO and GSO navigation satellite systems) near the northern crest of EIA (Indore: 22.52$^\circ$N, 75.92$^\circ$E, dip: 32.23$^\circ$N) and in between the crest and the dip equator (Hyderabad: 17.42$^\circ$N, 78.55$^\circ$E, dip: 21.69$^\circ$N). The study period (2017-2018) covers disturbed and quiet-time conditions in the declining phase of the solar cycle 24. The PSD analysis brings forward the presence of irregularities, of the order of a few hundred meters during weak-to-moderate and quiet-time conditions and up to a few km during the strong event, over both locations. The ROTI values validate the presence of such structures in the Indian region. Furthermore, only for the strong event, a time delay of scintillation occurrence over Indore, with values of 36 minutes and 50 minutes for NavIC satellites (PRNs) 5 and 6, respectively, from scintillation occurrence at Hyderabad is observed, suggesting a poleward evolution of irregularity structures. Further observations show a westward propagation of these structures on this day. The vast amount of data generated by camera sensors has prompted the exploration of energy-efficient processing solutions for deploying computer vision tasks on edge devices. Among the various approaches studied, processing-in-pixel integrates massively parallel analog computational capabilities at the extreme-edge, i.e., within the pixel array and exhibits enhanced energy and bandwidth efficiency by generating the output activations of the first neural network layer rather than the raw sensory data. In this article, we propose an energy and bandwidth efficient ADC-less processing-in-pixel architecture. This architecture implements an optimized binary activation neural network trained using Hoyer regularizer for high accuracy on complex vision tasks. In addition, we also introduce a global shutter burst memory read scheme utilizing fast and disturb-free read operation leveraging innovative use of nanoscale voltage-controlled magnetic tunnel junctions (VC-MTJs). Moreover, we develop an algorithmic framework incorporating device and circuit constraints (characteristic device switching behavior and circuit non-linearity) based on state-of-the-art fabricated VC-MTJ characteristics and extensive circuit simulations using commercial GlobalFoundries 22nm FDX technology. Finally, we evaluate the proposed system's performance on two complex datasets - CIFAR10 and ImageNet, showing improvements in front-end and communication energy efficiency by 8.2x and 8.5x respectively and reduction in bandwidth by 6x compared to traditional computer vision systems, without any significant drop in the test accuracy., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous process in astrophysical plasmas, responsible for the explosive conversion of magnetic energy into thermal and kinetic energy. In extreme astrophysical systems, such as black hole coronae and neutron star magnetospheres, radiative cooling modifies the energy partition by rapidly removing internal energy. In this thesis, we perform experimental and computational studies of magnetic reconnection in a radiatively cooled regime, previously unexplored in reconnection studies. The Magnetic Reconnection on Z (MARZ) experiments consist of a dual exploding wire array, driven by a 20 MA peak, 300 ns rise time current generated by the Z pulsed-power machine (Sandia National Labs). The load generates oppositely-directed supersonic, super-Alfv\'enic, collisional plasma flows with anti-parallel magnetic fields, that generate a reconnection layer, in which the total cooling rate far exceeds the Alfv\'enic transit rate. Two- and three-dimensional simulations of the MARZ experiments are performed in GORGON, an Eulerian resistive magnetohydrodynamic code. The experiments confirm numerical predictions by providing evidence of plasmoid formation and strong radiative cooling. The findings in this thesis are of particular relevance to the generation of radiative emission from reconnection-driven astrophysical events, and to the global dynamics of reconnection in strongly cooled systems. The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. We investigate the excitation spectra of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg trimer spin chain by employing a combination of numerical and theoretical techniques. Utilizing the Krylov-space correction-vector method in density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we calculate both the direct and indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra for the trimer spin chain. To interpret the observed features in the RIXS spectra, we perform a theoretical perturbative analysis to compute the energy dispersions which are then utilized to determine the density of states (DOS) for both the single-particle and the two-particle excitation spectra. Our results show that the single-particle continua of the direct RIXS spectrum align with the energy levels observed in the DOS spectra of spinon, doublon, and quarton excitations. Furthermore, the two-particle continua are revealed in the indirect RIXS process, where all possible single particle excitations combine to form the various two-particle excitations of the trimer spin chain. Based on our calculations, we propose the RIXS mechanism of generating the fractionalized (spinon) and collective (doublon and quarton) excitations in the trimer spin chain at both the $L$-edge and the $K$-edge, including discussing the interplay of these excitations in the RIXS spectrum for various trimer coupling strength. The computed energy range of the excitations suggest the possibility of experimental detection at both the $L$-edge and the $K$-edge within the current capabilities of RIXS instrumentation resolution., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

This work describes an approach towards pixel quantization using variable resolution which is made feasible using image transformation in the analog domain. The main aim is to reduce the average bits-per-pixel (BPP) necessary for representing an image while maintaining the classification accuracy of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that is trained for image classification. The proposed algorithm is based on the Hadamard transform that leads to a low-resolution variable quantization by the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) thus reducing the power dissipation in hardware at the sensor node. Despite the trade-offs inherent in image transformation, the proposed algorithm achieves competitive accuracy levels across various image sizes and ADC configurations, highlighting the importance of considering both accuracy and power consumption in edge computing applications. The schematic of a novel 1.5 bit ADC that incorporates the Hadamard transform is also proposed. A hardware implementation of the analog transformation followed by software-based variable quantization is done for the CIFAR-10 test dataset. The digitized data shows that the network can still identify transformed images with a remarkable 90% accuracy for 3-BPP transformed images following the proposed method., Comment: 13 pages, 20 figures

The protocol enables users to supply different crypto assets and accrue interest, while borrowers can avail themselves of loans secured by collateralized assets. Our collaboration with Compound Finance focuses on harnessing the power of the Chainrisk simulation engine to optimize risk parameters of the Compound V3 (Comet) protocol. This report delineates a comprehensive methodology aimed at calculating key risk metrics of the protocol. This optimization framework is pivotal for mitigating systemic risks and enhancing the overall stability of the protocol. By leveraging Chainrisk's Cloud Platform, we conduct millions of simulations to evaluate the protocol's Value at Risk (VaR) and Liquidations at Risk (LaR), ultimately providing recommendations for parameter adjustments.

Using techniques proposed in [Sason, IEEE Trans. Inf. Th. 59, 7118 (2013)] and [Becker, Datta and Jabbour, IEEE Trans. Inf. Th. 69, 4128 (2023)], and building on results from the latter, we construct a globally optimal continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy under energy constraints imposed by arbitrary Hamiltonians, satisfying the Gibbs hypothesis. In particular, this provides a precise expression for the modulus of continuity of the von Neumann entropy over the set of states with bounded energy for infinite-dimensional quantum systems. Thus, it completely solves the problem of finding an optimal continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy in this setting, which was previously known only for pairs of states which were sufficiently close to each other. Counterspeech presents a viable alternative to banning or suspending users for hate speech while upholding freedom of expression. However, writing effective counterspeech is challenging for moderators/users. Hence, developing suggestion tools for writing counterspeech is the need of the hour. One critical challenge in developing such a tool is the lack of quality and diversity of the responses in the existing datasets. Hence, we introduce a new dataset - CrowdCounter containing 3,425 hate speech-counterspeech pairs spanning six different counterspeech types (empathy, humor, questioning, warning, shaming, contradiction), which is the first of its kind. The design of our annotation platform itself encourages annotators to write type-specific, non-redundant and high-quality counterspeech. We evaluate two frameworks for generating counterspeech responses - vanilla and type-controlled prompts - across four large language models. In terms of metrics, we evaluate the responses using relevance, diversity and quality. We observe that Flan-T5 is the best model in the vanilla framework across different models. Type-specific prompts enhance the relevance of the responses, although they might reduce the language quality. We propose that a gravitational wave can be generated during leptogenesis in the early Universe which occurs when a heavy right handed neutrino decays out of equilibrium. Accurately determining the origin of radio emissions is essential for numerous scientific experiments, particularly in radio astronomy. Conventional techniques, such as the use of antenna arrays encounter significant challenges, specially at very low frequencies, due to factors like the substantial size of the antennas and ionospheric interference. To address these challenges, we employ a space-based single-telescope that utilizes co-located antennas, complemented by goniopolarimetric techniques for precise source localization. This study explores a novel and elementary machine learning (ML) technique as a way to improve and estimate Direction of Arrival (DoA), leveraging a tri-axial antenna arrangement for radio source localization. Employing a simplistic emission and receiving antenna model, our study involves training an artificial neural network (ANN) using synthetic radio signals. These synthetic signals can originate from any location in the sky and cover an incoherent frequency range of 0.3 to 30 MHz, with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between 0 and 60 dB. Then, a large data set was generated to train the ANN model catering to the possible signal configurations and variations. After training, the developed ANN model demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving loss levels in the training ($\sim0.02$), validation ($\sim0.23\%$), and testing ($\sim0.21\%$) phases. The machine learning-based approach remarkably, exhibits substantially quicker inference times ($\sim5$ ms) in contrast to analytically derived Direction of Arrival (DoA) methods, which typically range from 100 ms to a few seconds. The ion-lipid interface in Langmuir monolayers of Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) on pure water and 10 mM solutions of Na+ and K+ at different [K+]/[Na+] (a), atom/atom ratios, were studied initially by Surface Pressure (p) versus Specific Molecular Area (A) isotherms. The values of a were chosen as 0 (no K+), 0.43 ([K+]:[Na+] = 30:70) and 1.0 ([K+]:[Na+] = 50:50) These monolayers were studied through X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the O K-edge. The two-dimensional rigidity of the monolayer was found to increase with Na+ ions with respect to the pristine monolayer but fall drastically and non-linearly below the pristine value with introduction of the K+ ions, as a was increased. Analysis of the XRR profiles provided the thickness, average electron density (aed) and the interfacial roughness of the phosphatidylcholine head group and the two hydrocarbon tails of the monolayers on Si (001), from which the angle (f) between the head and the tails was determined. This was also follow the same as former one. From NEXAFS, it was found that a linear increase in the cation ratio towards K led to a nonlinear variation in the P=O bond energy and a weakening of the P-O bond energy, the latter becoming more pronounced with K ions, consistent with Fajans rule. Also a split in the C=O p-bond peak was observed at a = 1.0. These results cannot be explained with the model of a uniform electric field due to the cations, which would fall linearly with increase in the K+ proportion, and rather suggest a structured field due a spatial variation in charge density in an interfacial layer of high ion concentration assembled by the counterionic attraction of the phosphatidylcholine head groups. Our results have important implications for the cell membrane, where such mixtures at high concentrations constitute the norm.

Excitons are fundamental excitations that govern the optical properties of semiconductors. Interacting excitons can lead to various emergent phases of matter and large nonlinear optical responses. In most semiconductors, excitons interact via exchange interaction or phase space filling. Correlated materials that host excitons coupled to other degrees of freedom offer hitherto unexplored pathways for controlling these interactions. Here, we demonstrate magnon-mediated excitonic interactions in CrSBr, an antiferromagnetic semiconductor. This interaction manifests as the dependence of exciton energy on exciton density via a magnonic adjustment of the spin canting angle. Our study demonstrates the emergence of quasiparticle-mediated interactions in correlated quantum materials, leading to large nonlinear optical responses and potential device concepts such as magnon-mediated quantum transducers., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures

Astrophysical and cosmological observations strongly suggest the existence of Dark Matter. However, it's fundamental nature is still elusive. Collider experiments at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) offer a promising way to reveal the particle nature of the dark matter. In such an endeavour, we investigate the potential of the mono-Higgs plus missing $E_T$ signature at the LHC to search for dark matter. Without going in a particular Ultra-Violet complete model of dark matter, we have used the framework of Effective Field Theory to describe the dynamics of a relatively light fermionic dark matter candidate, which interacts with the Standard Model via dimension-6 and dimension-7 operators involving the Higgs and the gauge bosons. Both cut-based and Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) algorithms have been used to extract the signal for dark matter production over the Standard Model backgrounds, assuming an integrated luminosity of $3000~fb^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}~=~14$ TeV at the High Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC). The BDT is seen to separate the dark matter signal at $5\sigma$ significance, for masses below 200 GeV, showcasing the prospects of this search at the HL-LHC., Comment: 19 Pages, 8 Figures, 8 Tables

We consider an open quantum system undergoing Markovian dynamics, the latter being modelled by a discrete-time quantum Markov semigroup $(\Phi^n)_{n \in {\mathbb{N}}}$, resulting from the action of sequential uses of a quantum channel $\Phi$, with $n \in {\mathbb{N}}$ being the discrete time parameter. Current video-based computer vision (CV) applications typically suffer from high energy consumption due to reading and processing all pixels in a frame, regardless of their significance. While previous works have attempted to reduce this energy by skipping input patches or pixels and using feedback from the end task to guide the skipping algorithm, the skipping is not performed during the sensor read phase. As a result, these methods can not optimize the front-end sensor energy. Moreover, they may not be suitable for real-time applications due to the long latency of modern CV networks that are deployed in the back-end. To address this challenge, this paper presents a custom-designed reconfigurable CMOS image sensor (CIS) system that improves energy efficiency by selectively skipping uneventful regions or rows within a frame during the sensor's readout phase, and the subsequent analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) phase. A novel masking algorithm intelligently directs the skipping process in real-time, optimizing both the front-end sensor and back-end neural networks for applications including autonomous driving and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR). Our system can also operate in standard mode without skipping, depending on application needs. We evaluate our hardware-algorithm co-design framework on object detection based on BDD100K and ImageNetVID, and gaze estimation based on OpenEDS, achieving up to 53% reduction in front-end sensor energy while maintaining state-of-the-art (SOTA) accuracy., Comment: Under review

We introduce the notion of weighted singular vectors and weighted uniform exponent with respect to a set of weights. We prove invariance of these exponents for affine subspaces and submanifolds inside those affine subspaces. For certain submanifolds, we show that there is no totally irrational vector with high uniform exponent, complementing the previously known existence results. Moreover, we show existence and non-existence of non-obvious divergence orbits for certain cones.

A numerical model based on hydrodynamic approach has been developed to emulate the device dynamics of active target Time Projection Chamber which is utilized for studying nuclear reaction through three dimensional tracking of concerned low energy particles. The proposed model has been used to investigate the performance of a prototype active target Time Projection Chamber, namely SAT-TPC, to be fabricated at Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, for its application in nuclear physics experiments. A case study of non-relativistic elastic scattering $^4He+^{12}C$ with beam energy $25~MeV$ and current $2.3~pA$ has been opted for this purpose. The effect of beam induced space charge on the tracking performance the SAT-TPC prototype has been studied to optimize the beam current and scheme of the anode readout segmentation. The model has been validated by comparing its results to that of a particle model used to explain observed distortion in scattered particle tracks in a low energy nuclear physics experiment.

The release of ChatGPT in November 2022 sparked an explosion of interest in post-training and an avalanche of new preference optimization (PO) methods. These methods claim superior alignment by virtue of better correspondence with human pairwise preferences, often measured by LLM-judges. In this work, we attempt to answer the following question -- do LLM-judge preferences translate to progress on other, more concrete metrics for alignment, and if not, why not? We define a concrete metric for alignment, and introduce SOS-Bench (Substance Outweighs Style Benchmark), which is to the best of our knowledge the largest standardized, reproducible LLM meta-benchmark to date. We find that (1) LLM-judge preferences do not correlate with concrete measures of safety, world knowledge, and instruction following; (2) LLM-judges have powerful implicit biases, prioritizing style over factuality and safety; and (3) the supervised fine-tuning (SFT) stage of post-training, and not the PO stage, has the greatest impact on alignment, with data scaling and prompt diversity as the driving factors.
