Abstract

Fusarium‐induced wilt significantly affects the cultivation and yield of pigeon peas. This warrants sustainable disease management while promoting plant growth. The present study investigated the biopotential of coinoculation of Streptomyces pseudogriseolus S‐9 and Rhizophagus irregularis for plant growth promotion and mitigation of the impact of Fusarium wilt on pigeon pea over three seasons at pot and field levels. Pigeon pea plants were subjected to Fusarium wilt stress and treated with different inoculation strategies, including single and combined applications of S. pseudogriseolus S‐9 and R. irregularis. Plant growth parameters and yields were assessed to evaluate the efficacy of the coinoculation. In the pot experiment, T‐6 treatment resulted in the longest root (62.56 ± 0.01 cm) and shoot (70.24 ± 0.01 cm) lengths compared to the application of commercial biofungicide T‐8 (Trichoderma). This treatment also significantly influenced the yield of potted plants. It resulted in the highest fresh root weight (62.27 ± 0.01 g), fresh shoot weight (70.24 ± 0.02 g), maximum root (55.25 ± 0.01 g) and shoot dry weights (52.25 ± 0.01 g). In the field experiment, pigeon pea plants treated with the bioinoculant also demonstrated a substantial increase (р ≤ 0.05) in total grain yield, the weight of 100 grains, and the number of filled grains compared to the control group in all experimental seasons. In vitro, antagonism assay of compatibility of mycorrhizae and bacteria showed good activity using powder formulation. Thus, the consortium application inspired the broad application of Streptomyces and Trichoderma as effective bioinoculants for wilt management and yield improvement in pigeon peas. 14. Streptomycessp. S-9 promotes plant growth and confers resistance in Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) against Fusariumwilt

Abstract

Streptomycessp. strain S-9 was studied for its effect in inducing systemic resistance in Pigeon pea against the plant pathogen Fusarium udumcausing wilt. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicated that S-9 is closely related to genus Streptomycesfor which it was referred to as Streptomycessp. S-9. Streptomycessp. S-9 caused 85% inhibition of the pathogen and showed various attributes of plant growth-promoting such as the production of IAA, P-solubilization, and β-1, 3-Glucanase activity. Proline and malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly higher whereas the chlorophyll content decreased in the pathogen-infected plant when compared to S-9 treated Pigeon pea plants. The anatomical research assisted the biocontrol-mediated stress tolerance findings in the Pigeon pea plant through increased root epidermis and enhanced stress-related xylem tissues. Fungus inoculation elevated the antioxidative enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD; 78%) and catalase (CAT; 56%). Marked reductions in antioxidant enzymes were associated with the antagonistic effects of the different treatments. Conclusions showed that S-9 bioinocula applied as a seed coating enhanced soil availability of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), and potassium (K), indicating their suitability for direct application invigorating plant growth and persuade resistance in the plant Pigeon pea against Fusarium wilt.

Abstract

The objective of this project was to assist New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission in determining the feasibility of a removable visual marker for Graduated Drivers License (GDL) drivers. The NJ Teen Driver Safety Study Commission issued a report to the Governor and Legislature in March of 2008 in response to concerns over the growing level of fatalities and teen driver injuries in New Jersey. One of the recommendations from the Commission’s report identifies the need to mark vehicles operated by mostly teen Graduated Driver License (GDL) drivers to aid in enforcement of the GDL law., Six technologies were identified to meet the requirement for a removable tag on the vehicle license plate. After review of documents and discussion with vendors two technologies were field tested, a hook-and-loop, or Velcro, fastener, and a magnetic fastener. Both had two pieces, a base which attached to the license plate with adhesive and a top piece with a reflective sticker. Based on the field test and further review of product specifications, the hook-and-loop fastener is recommended as the preferred technology for this application. A retroreflective sticker was tested as well. Both the durability and the visibility of the stickers tested was not satisfactory. A draft specification was prepared to help address these deficiencies when the stickers are put out to bid. A focus group was held to discuss enforcement strategies and it was agreed that no identified was required on the sticker, only a solid color. It is proposed that the successful vendor conduct a field test of the attachment devices and the stickers, prior to full deployment, using approximately 500-1000 devices.
