We exploit the phenomenon of resonant dispersive wave (RDW) emission in gas-filled hollow capillary fibres (HCFs) to realize time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) measurements with an extremely short temporal resolution. By integrating the output end of an HCF directly into a vacuum chamber assembly we demonstrate two-colour deep ultraviolet (DUV)-infrared instrument response functions of just 10 and 11 fs at central pump wavelengths of 250 and 280 nm, respectively. This result represents an advance in the current state of the art for ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy. We present an initial demonstration of a velocity-map imaging (VMI) experiment using a back-irradiation laser-based desorption source directly integrated into the electrode assembly. This has the potential to greatly expand the utility of the popular VMI approach by permitting its use with high density plumes of non-volatile molecular samples. Photoelectron circular dichroism measurements on the phenylalanine molecule using 400 nm multiphoton ionization are used to illustrate this novel method, revealing forward-backward emission asymmetries on the order of 7%.

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging was used to investigate nonadiabatic processes operating in the excited electronic states of nitrobenzene and three methyl-substituted derivatives: 3,5-, 2,6-, and 2,4-dimethylnitrobenzene. The primary goal was evaluating the dynamical impact of the torsional angle between the NO2 group and the benzene ring plane-something previously implicated in mediating the propensity for branching into different photodissociation pathways (NO vs NO2 elimination). Targeted, photoinitiated release of NO radicals is of interest for clinical medicine applications, and there is a need to establish basic structure-dynamics-function principles in systematically varied model systems following photoexcitation. Within our 200 ps experimental detection window, we observed no significant differences in the excited-state lifetimes exhibited by all species under study using a 267 nm pump and ionization with an intense 400 nm probe. In agreement with previous theoretical predictions, this suggests that the initial energy redistribution dynamics within the singlet and triplet manifolds are driven by motions localized predominantly on the NO2 group. Our findings also imply that both NO and NO2 elimination occur from a vibrationally hot ground state on extended (nanosecond) timescales, and any variations in NO vs NO2 branching upon site-selective methylation are due to steric effects influencing isomerization prior to dissociation.

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) is a highly differential technique for the detailed study of non-adiabatic energy redistribution dynamics operating in the electronically excited states of molecules following the absorption of ultraviolet light. This Perspective briefly reviews the main elements of the TRPEI method but also seeks to address some of its limitations. With the help of various examples drawn from our own recent work, we illustrate some of the challenges commonly encountered during the analysis and interpretation of experimental data and introduce some initial thoughts on approaches to help deal with them. We also discuss some novel methods that aim to expand the capabilities and utility of the TRPEI technique by extending the observation window along the photochemical reaction coordinate(s) and improving the temporal resolution. Given the widespread use of TRPEI and related ultrafast spectroscopies, we anticipate that this Perspective will be of broad interest to a sizeable research community. Furthermore, we hope it will also serve as a useful overview for those engaging with this topic for the first time.

Many charged particle imaging measurements rely on the inverse Abel transform (or related methods) to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) photoproduct distributions from a single two-dimensional (2D) projection image. This technique allows for both energy- and angle-resolved information to be recorded in a relatively inexpensive experimental setup, and its use is now widespread within the field of photochemical dynamics. There are restrictions, however, as cylindrical symmetry constraints on the overall form of the distribution mean that it can only be used with a limited range of laser polarization geometries. The more general problem of reconstructing arbitrary 3D distributions from a single 2D projection remains open. Here, we demonstrate how artificial neural networks can be used as a replacement for the inverse Abel transform and—more importantly—how they can be used to directly “reinflate” 2D projections into their original 3D distributions, even in cases where no cylindrical symmetry is present. This is subject to the simulation of appropriate training data based on known analytical expressions describing the general functional form of the overall anisotropy. Using both simulated and real experimental data, we show how our arbitrary image reinflation (AIR) neural network can be utilized for a range of different examples, potentially offering a simple and flexible alternative to more expensive and complicated 3D imaging techniques.

The available experimental data provided by ultrafast dynamics studies of pyrrole and its derivatives in excited states of mixed Rydberg/valence 3s/πσ* character are strongly affected by the interaction with the laser pulses. Understanding these data has constituted an endeavor for several groups during the past few years. Here we apply a simple theoretical model that, including the interaction with the laser pulses, allows one to clarify some aspects of the discrepancies between measurements monitoring different experimental observables. New experimental data on pyrrole, 2,4-dimethylpyrrole, and 2,5-dimethylpyrrole are also provided to check the validity of the model and to gain more insight into the excited state dynamics of pyrrole systems.

Previous mass spectrometry studies of nucleosides have identified enhanced relative production of nucleobase ions (e.g.uracil+from uridine) as a function of desorption temperature to be the critical indicator of thermal decomposition. On this basis, the present multi-photon ionization (MPI) experiments demonstrate that laser-based thermal desorption is effective for producing uridine, 5-methyluridine, and 2′-deoxyuridine targets without thermal decomposition. Our experiments also revealed one notable thermal dependence: the relative production of the sugar ion C5H9O4+from intact uridine increased substantially with the desorption laser power and this only occurred at MPI wavelengths below 250 nm (full range studied 222-265 nm). We argue that this effect can only be rationalized plausibly in terms of changing populations of different isomers, tautomers, or conformers in the target as a function of the thermal desorption conditions. Furthermore, the wavelength threshold behavior of this thermally-sensitive MPI channel indicates a critical dependence on neutral excited state dynamics between the absorption of the first and second photons. The experimental results are complemented by density functional theory (DFT) optimizations of the lowest-energy structure of uridine and two further conformers distinguished by different orientations of the hydroxymethyl group on the sugar part of the molecule. Examples of extracting meaningful information from image projection data using tomographic reconstruction techniques can be found in many areas of science. Within the photochemical dynamics community, tomography allows for complete three-dimensional (3D) charged particle momentum distributions to be reconstructed following a photodissociation or photoionization event. This permits highly differential velocity- and angle-resolved measurements to be made simultaneously. However, the generalized tomographic reconstruction strategies typically adopted for use with photochemical imaging—based around the Fourier-slice theorem and filtered back-projection algorithms—are not optimized for these specific types of problems. Here, we discuss pre-existing alternative strategies—namely, the simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique and Hankel Transform Reconstruction (HTR)—and introduce them in the context of velocity-map imaging applications. We demonstrate the clear advantages they afford, and how they can perform considerably better than approaches commonly adopted at present. Most notably, with HTR we can set a bound on the minimum number of projections required to reliably reconstruct 3D photoproduct distributions. This bound is significantly lower than what is currently accepted and will help make tomographic imaging far more accessible and efficient for many experimentalists working in the field of photochemical dynamics.

We report the first excited state dynamics study of gas-phase 5,6-dihydroxyindole (5,6-DHI), a key building block of eumelanin pigments that are found throughout nature and serve as important photo-protective compounds. Time-resolved ion-yield measurements over the 241-296 nm ultraviolet photoexcitation region revealed non-adiabatic processes occurring on up to three distinct timescales. These reflect ultrafast (i.e. sub-picosecond) internal conversion within the excited state singlet manifold, and much longer-lived processes ranging from 10 ps to in excess of 1 ns. Our investigation paves the way for precisely targeted future studies of 5,6-DHI that exploit more differential measurement techniques. The work was facilitated by the use of soft laser-based thermal desorption to introduce 5,6-DHI samples into the gas phase. This approach, based on low-cost, readily available diode lasers, is straightforward, easily controllable and potentially applicable to a wide range of non-volatile molecular species.

Femtosecond pulses of light in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectral region permit extended observation of non-adiabatic dynamics in gas-phase molecules. When used as a probe in time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, such pulses project deeply into the ionization continuum and allow the evolution of excited state population to be monitored across multiple potential energy surfaces. When compared with longer-wavelength probes, this often provides a more complete view along the reaction coordinate(s) connecting photoreactants to photoproducts. Here we report the use of 160 nm VUV light to interrogate the excited state dynamics operating in acetylacetone following 267 nm excitation. Multiple non-adiabatic processes (internal conversion and intersystem crossing) were observed on timescales ranging from a few femtoseconds to hundreds of picoseconds. Our quantitative results are in excellent agreement with earlier studies that individually sampled smaller sub-sections of the total reaction coordinate. Furthermore, we also observe additional dynamical signatures not previously reported elsewhere. Overall, our findings provide a good illustration of the need to use short-wavelength VUV probes to obtain the most comprehensive picture possible in photoionization-based studies of photochemical dynamics.

Soliton-driven resonant dispersive-wave (RDW) emission is an established route to the generation of frequency tunable ultrafast pulses. In gas-filled anti-resonant guiding hollow-core photonic-crystal fibre (HC-PCF), continuous tuning of RDW generation in both the vacuum (VUV) and deep ultraviolet (DUV) to visible (110 nm to 550 nm) has been achieved [1] and fully characterised to have a temporal duration of a few fs in DUV [2]. Due to the high conversion efficiency (up to 10%), relatively low pump energies are required (few μJ) to get useful UV energy, and so high repetition-rate pump sources can be used [3]. Furthermore, the generated UV emission reproduces the polarization state of the pump pulse. Combined, all of these features make RDW-emission in gasfilled HC-PCF an ideal, and rather unique, source for ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy in the ultraviolet region.

We demonstrate, for the first time, the application of rare-gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) as tunable ultraviolet light sources in femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. A critical requirement here is excellent output stability over extended periods of data acquisition, and we show this can be readily achieved. The time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique reveals nonadiabatic dynamical processes operating on three distinct time scales in the styrene molecule following excitation over the 242-258 nm region. Wavelength-dependent measurements of the RNA base uracil, undertaken with nanosecond ultraviolet laser pulses, have previously identified a fragment at m/z = 84 (corresponding to the C3H4N2O+ ion) at excitation wavelengths ≤232 nm. This has been interpreted as a possible signature of a theoretically predicted ultrafast ring-opening occurring on a neutral excited state potential energy surface. To further investigate the dynamics of this mechanism, and also the non-adiabatic dynamics operating more generally in uracil, we have used a newly built ultra-high vacuum spectrometer incorporating a laser-based thermal desorption source to perform time-resolved ion-yield measurements at pump wavelengths of 267 nm, 220 nm, and 200 nm. We also report complementary data obtained for the related species 2-thiouracil following 267 nm excitation. Where direct comparisons can be made (267 nm), our findings are in good agreement with the previously reported measurements conducted on these systems using cold molecular beams, demonstrating that the role of initial internal energy on the excited state dynamics is negligible. Our 220 nm and 200 nm data also represent the first reported ultrafast study of uracil at pump wavelengths 3(1ππ*) state. These measurements do not, however, provide any evidence for the appearance of the m/z = 84 fragment within the first few hundred picoseconds following excitation. This key finding indicates that the detection of this specific species in previous nanosecond work is not directly related to an ultrafast ring-opening process. An alternative excited state process, operating on a more extended time scale, remains an open possibility.

We report time-resolved photoelectron imaging studies of gas-phase pyrrole over the 267-240 nm excitation region, recorded in conjunction with a 300 nm probe. Of specific interest is the lowest-lying (3s/πσ*) state, which exhibits very weak oscillator strength but is thought to be excited directly at wavelengths ≤254 nm. We conclude, however, that the only significant contribution to our photoelectron data at all wavelengths investigated is from non-resonant ionization. Our findings do not rule out (3s/πσ*) state excitation (as appears to be confirmed by supporting time-resolved ion-yield measurements) but do potentially highlight important caveats regarding the use and interpretation of photoreactant ionization measurements to interrogate dynamical processes in systems exhibiting significant topological differences between the potential energy surfaces of the neutral and cation states.

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with ab initio quantum chemistry calculations was used to study ultrafast excited state dynamics in formamide (FOR), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) following 160 nm excitation. Ultrafast time-resolved velocity map ion imaging (TR-VMI) and time-resolved ion-yield (TR-IY) methods are utilised to reveal a comprehensive picture of the electronic state relaxation dynamics in photoexcited catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene). After excitation to the S1 ((1)ππ*) state between 280.5 (the S1 origin band, S1(v = 0)) to 243 nm, the population in this state is observed to decay through coupling onto the S2 ((1)πσ*) state, which is dissociative with respect to the non-hydrogen bonded 'free' O-H bond (labelled O(1)-H). This process occurs via tunnelling under an S1/S2 conical intersection (CI) on a timeframe of 5-11 ps, resulting in O(1)-H bond fission along S2. Concomitant formation of ground state catechoxyl radicals (C6H5O2(X)), in coincidence with translationally excited H-atoms, occurs over the same timescale as the S1 state population decays. Between 254-237 nm, direct excitation to the S2 state is also observed, manifesting in the ultrafast (~100 fs) formation of H-atoms with high kinetic energy release. From these measurements we determine that the S1/S2 CI lies ~3700-5500 cm(-1) above the S1(v = 0) level, indicating that the barrier height to tunnelling from S1(v = 0) → S2 is comparable to that observed in the related 'benchmark' species phenol (hydroxybenzene). We discuss how a highly 'vibrationally-enhanced' tunnelling mechanism is responsible for the two orders of magnitude enhancement to the tunnelling rate in catechol, relative to that previously determined in phenol (1.2 ns), despite similar barrier heights. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the non-planar S1 excited state minimum structure (C1 symmetry) in catechol, which in turn yields relaxed symmetry constraints for vibronic coupling from S1(v = 0) → S2- a scenario which does not exist for phenol. These findings offer an elegant example of how even simple chemical modifications (ortho-hydroxy substitution) to a fundamental, biologically relevant, UV chromophore, such as phenol, can have profound effects on the ensuing excited state dynamics.

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to obtain new information about the dynamics of electronic relaxation in gas-phase indole and 5-hydroxyindole following UV excitation with femtosecond laser pulses centred at 249 nm and 273 nm. Our analysis of the data was supported by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster and complete-active-space self-consistent-field levels. The optically bright (1)L(a) and (1)L(b) electronic states of (1)ππ∗ character and spectroscopically dark and dissociative (1)πσ∗ states were all found to play a role in the overall relaxation process. In both molecules we conclude that the initially excited (1)L(a) state decays non-adiabatically on a sub 100 fs timescale via two competing pathways, populating either the subsequently long-lived (1)L(b) state or the (1)πσ∗ state localised along the N-H coordinate, which exhibits a lifetime on the order of 1 ps. In the case of 5-hydroxyindole, we conclude that the (1)πσ∗ state localised along the O-H coordinate plays little or no role in the relaxation dynamics at the two excitation wavelengths studied.

We present an overview of developments using the nonresonant dynamic Stark effect within the fields of time-resolved molecular dynamics and quantum control, drawing on examples from our own recent work. Particular emphasis is placed on the notion that “dynamics” and “control” are not distinct disciplines and that a clear synergy exits between these areas which has, up to now, been somewhat underexploited. The dynamic Stark effect is a universal interaction which we expect to have broad applicability.

Non-Born-Oppenheimer wavepacket revivals have been observed in 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane using time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Upon photoexcitation, the wavepacket oscillates between the first two excited states for over 14 ps – a behavior only seen in diatomics before.

We present, for the first time, rotationally resolved photoelectron images resulting from the ionization of a polyatomic molecule. Photoelectron angular distributions pertaining to the formation of individual rotational levels of $\mathrm{NH}_{3}{}^{+}$ have been extracted from the images and analyzed to enable a complete determination of the radial dipole matrix elements and relative phases that describe the ionization dynamics. This determination leads to the deduction of significantly different dynamics from those extracted in previous studies which lacked either angular information or rotational resolution.

Time-resolved photoelectron spectra of adenine and 9-methyl adenine are presented. Differences in the spectra combined with calculated Franck-Condon structures prove unambiguously the involvement of the πσ* deactivation channel in the reaction dynamics of adenine.

The authors report time resolved photoelectron spectra of the (1)B(2)((1)Sigma(u) (+)) state of CS(2) at pump wavelengths in the region of 200 nm. In contrast to previous studies, the authors find that the predissociation dynamics is not well described by a single exponential decay. Biexponential modeling of the authors' data reveals a rapid decay pathway (tau50 fs), in addition to a longer lived channel (tau approximately 350-650 fs) that displays a marked change in apparent lifetime when the polarization of the pump laser is rotated with respect to that of the probe. Since the initially populated (1)B(2)((1)Sigma(u) (+)) state may decay to form either S((1)D) or S((3)P) products (the latter produced via a spin-orbit induced crossing from a singlet to a triplet electronic surface), this lifetime observation may be rationalized in terms of changes in the relative ionization cross section of these singlet and triplet states of CS(2) as a function of laser polarization geometry. The experimentally observed lifetime of the longer lived channel is therefore a superposition of these two pathways, both of which decay on very similar time scales.
