5. Mechanistic modelling methodologies for microstructurally-sensitive crack growth in ductile metals

A physically-based methodology for modelling microstructurally-sensitive fatigue crack growth has been developed and shown to capture many of the experimentally observed effects associated with microstructurally-sensitive fatigue crack growth, which currently contribute to the high levels of uncertainty in lifing models. Behaviours predicted by the model cover changes in rate and path due to interactions with local microstructural features including rate changes due to local crystal orientations, deflections and retardation at grain boundaries and crack path tortuosity within grains. The ability of the model to accurately capture these key behaviours has enabled their rationalisation within a physically-based, mechanistic framework.

The precolonial territory that became the Philippines was a participant in maritime Asian politics and warfare that made the Southeast Asian region appear unstable and undefined to newly arrived Western observers. In truth, regional network-building amid labor shortages was a constant concern of the various peoples, with their interdependent arrangements occasionally readjusted because of piratical raids conducted by more capable or determined centers in order to increase their working populations. The Western occupation forces (themselves also subject to limitations in their number) sought to stabilize the communities they subjugated in order to more effectively bankroll their colonial projects, an arrangement that persisted into the Philippine postcolonial administrations' attempts at national industrialization. The neartotal economic shutdown that resulted from national and global objections to the excesses of the authoritarian regime of Ferdinand E. Marcos led to labor export as a stop-gap policy. The success of this specific measure turned it into the equivalent of a singularly permanent national industry, with the overseas presence of Filipino workers showing up in foreign popular culture products. This article will look at film samples in various periods, from the (often anonymous) appearances of Filipinos in Hollywood movies, through their inscription in the cinemas of neighboring Asian countries, to their occasional representation in contemporary Western films, with a focus on two European releases from 2022, Triangle of Sadness and Nocebo. It will inspect correspondences between the so-far persistent labor-export policy and the population's precolonial disposition to thrive in the face of the vicissitudes wrought by unpredictable shifts in geopolitical circumstances. In mammalian females, after sperm are deposited in the reproductive tract, a fraction of sperm migrates to the lower oviduct (isthmus) and forms a sperm storage site known as the functional sperm reservoir. The interactions between sperm membrane proteins and oviduct epithelial cells facilitate sperm binding to the oviductal epithelium and retention in the reservoir. Sperm are bound by glycans that contain specific motifs present on isthmic epithelial cells. Capacitated sperm are released from the reservoir and travel further in the oviduct to the ampulla where fertilization occurs. For decades, researchers have been studying the molecules and mechanisms of sperm release from the oviductal sperm reservoir. However, it is still not clear if the release of sperm is triggered by changes in sperm, oviduct cells, oviduct fluid, or a combination of these. While there is a possibility that more than one of these events are involved in the release of sperm from the reservoir, one activator of sperm release has the largest accumulation of supporting evidence. This mechanism involves the steroid hormone, progesterone, as a signal that induces the release of sperm from the reservoir. This review gathers and synthesizes evidence for the role of progesterone in inducing sperm release from the oviduct functional sperm reservoir.

[ES] El presente vídeo muestra la forma de caracterizar la carga y descarga del condensador así como el cálculo de su capacidad y de la constante Tau. Se describen las ecuaciones involucradas en el proceso. Las medidas se han realizado utilizando un osciloscopio digital. Al final se dan ejemplos de utilización en casos reales. Esto tiene especial relevancia en las asignaturas de física, especialmente en laboratorio. El trabajo está enmarcado en el programa ERASMUS+ BIP para su difusión., [EN] This video shows how to characterize the charge and discharge of the capacitor as well as the calculation of its capacity and the Tau constant. The equations involved in the process are described. The measurements were made using a digital oscilloscope. At the end, examples of use in real cases are given. This is especially relevant in physics subjects, especially in the laboratory. The work is part of the ERASMUS+ BIP programme for dissemination.

Hoy en día el mundo se ha llenado de inteligencias artificiales. Existen aquellas que te dan conversación, mientras que hay otras que se hacen pasar de artistas aprendiendo patrones visuales gracias a las redes neuronales. Me interesan mucho las redes que eran capaces de aprender patrones, así que decidí utilizar esa curiosidad para hacer una red neuronal que permita aprender las señales de tráfico para mejorar la fiabilidad de los vehículos inteligentes. Este proyecto tratará de construir una red neuronal convolucional que permita la clasificación de señales de tráfico en dispositivos que consuman poca energía. Se construirá desde cero la red y pasarán por las diferentes etapas de entrenamiento y testeo para comprobar la viabilidad de esta red., Today the world has been filled with artificial intelligence. There are those that chat with you, while there are others that try to be artists learning from visual patterns from artists themselves thanks to neural networks. Since I am very interested in neural networks, I decided to use that curiosity to make a neural network that learns traffic signs. In this project I will build a convoluted neural network that allows the classification of traffic signals on low consumption devices. It will be built from scratch and will go through the different stages of training and testing to verify the viability of the network on smart vehicles.

28. The Cardiac Microenvironment Instructs Divergent Monocyte Fates and Functions in Myocarditis

Summary: Two types of monocytes, Ly6Chi and Ly6Clo, infiltrate the heart in murine experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM). We discovered a role for cardiac fibroblasts in facilitating monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation of both Ly6Chi and Ly6Clo cells, allowing these macrophages to perform divergent functions in myocarditis progression. During the acute phase of EAM, IL-17A is highly abundant. It signals through cardiac fibroblasts to attenuate efferocytosis of Ly6Chi monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) and simultaneously prevents Ly6Clo monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation. We demonstrated an inverse clinical correlation between heart IL-17A levels and efferocytic receptor expressions in humans with heart failure (HF). In the absence of IL-17A signaling, Ly6Chi MDMs act as robust phagocytes and are less pro-inflammatory, whereas Ly6Clo monocytes resume their differentiation into MHCII+ macrophages. We propose that MHCII+Ly6Clo MDMs are associated with the reduction of cardiac fibrosis and prevention of the myocarditis sequalae. : Hou et al. show that cardiac fibroblasts facilitate infiltrating Ly6Chi and Ly6Clo monocytes to become macrophages. IL-17A trans-signaling through cardiac fibroblasts increases MerTK shedding and promotes a pro-inflammatory and pro-tissue remodeling gene expression profile in Ly6Chi monocyte-derived macrophages. Innate lymphoid cells (ILC) are a subset of leukocytes with lymphoid properties that lack antigen specific receptors. They can be stimulated by and exert their effect via specific cytokine axes, whereas Natural Killers (NK) cells are the only known cytotoxic member of this family. ILCs are considered key in linking the innate and adaptive response in physiologic and pathologic environments. In this study, we investigated the properties of non-cytotoxic cardiac ILCs in physiologic, inflammatory, and ischemic conditions. We found that in healthy humans and mice, non-cytotoxic cardiac ILCs are predominantly a type 2-committed population with progenitor-like features, such as an absence of type-specific immunophenotype, intermediate GATA3 expression, and capacity to transiently express Pro-myelocytic Leukemia Zinc Finger protein (PLZF) upon activation. During myocarditis and ischemia, in both human and mice, cardiac ILCs differentiated into conventional ILC2s. We found that cardiac ILCs lack IL-25 receptor and cannot become inflammatory ILC2s. We found a strong correlation between IL-33 production in the heart and the ability of cardiac ILCs to become conventional ILC2s. The main producer of IL-33 was a subset of CD29+Sca-1+ cardiac fibroblasts. ILC2 expansion and fibroblast-derived IL-33 production were significantly increased in the heart in mouse models of infarction and myocarditis. Despite its progenitor-like status in healthy hearts, cardiac ILCs were unable to become ILC1 or ILC3 in vivo and in vitro. Using adoptive transfer and parabiosis, we demonstrated that the heart, unlike other organs such as lung, cannot be infiltrated by circulating ILCs in adulthood even during cardiac inflammation or ischemia. Thus, the ILC2s present during inflammatory conditions are derived from the heart-resident and quiescent steady-state population. Non-cytotoxic cardiac ILCs are a resident population of ILC2-commited cells, with undifferentiated progenitor-like features in steady-state conditions and an ability to expand and develop pro-inflammatory type 2 features during inflammation or ischemia.

Hoy en día el mundo se ha llenado de inteligencias artificiales. Existen aquellas que te dan conversación, mientras que hay otras que se hacen pasar de artistas aprendiendo patrones visuales gracias a las redes neuronales. Me interesan mucho las redes que eran capaces de aprender patrones, así que decidí utilizar esa curiosidad para hacer una red neuronal que permita aprender las señales de tráfico para mejorar la fiabilidad de los vehículos inteligentes. Este proyecto tratará de construir una red neuronal convolucional que permita la clasificación de señales de tráfico en dispositivos que consuman poca energía. Se construirá desde cero la red y pasarán por las diferentes etapas de entrenamiento y testeo para comprobar la viabilidad de esta red. Today the world has been filled with artificial intelligence. There are those that chat with you, while there are others that try to be artists learning from visual patterns from artists themselves thanks to neural networks. Since I am very interested in neural networks, I decided to use that curiosity to make a neural network that learns traffic signs. In this project I will build a convoluted neural network that allows the classification of traffic signals on low consumption devices. It will be built from scratch and will go through the different stages of training and testing to verify the viability of the network on smart vehicles.
