This study was conducted to determine the effect of a range ring and intruder vertical rate on pilots' perception of aircraft separation as viewed on a cockpit display of traffic information. A group of 30 pilots from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University participated as subjects. SuperCard® Version 1.6 software and a Macintosh Ilsi® personal computer were employed to generate the simulation of a cockpit display of traffic information. Each pilot monitored 80 unique scenarios in which they determined, as early as possible, what the vertical miss distance would be when a single intruder passed ownship. The pilots' decision time and perceived vertical miss distance were compiled for each scenario. Range ring did not have a significant effect on the perception of vertical miss with regards to time or error while vertical rate had a significant effect on time and error. Exploratory research was also performed on miss distance and approach angle.

Sensory data is only meaningful if correctly associated with originating locations, e.g., in three-dimensional wireless sensor systems inside an aircraft cabin. Received signal strength is a cost-effective option to locate low-cost sensors due to its universal availability, but suffers from coarse ranging accuracy with multiplicative errors. This paper presents a new received signal strength-based approach to locating a large number of low-cost sensors given their possible three-dimensional installation points. Our approach achieves the accuracy which has not been achieved in the literature. The approach first cooperatively locates the sensors in the continuous three-dimensional spaces, then associates the continuous location estimates to the installation points, and finally refines the association with likelihood ascent search. A new convex relaxation-based optimization is designed for cooperative localization in continuous three-dimensional spaces. The Kuhn-Munkres algorithm is generalized for the association. Cramér-Rao Lower Bounds are derived to specify the local three-dimensional regions in which refinement is carried out to improve the final accuracy with little complexity overhead. The proposed approach is validated experimentally with signal strength measurements collected in a Fokker 100 passenger plane, achieves 100% accuracy in all experiments conducted, and outperforms state-of-the-art metaheuristics significantly with much shorter execution time. Note to Practitioners - This paper is motivated by a goal to realize various aircraft automation applications through three-dimensional localization and association of wireless sensors. For example, automatic identification of seat locations can be implemented efficiently with wireless sensors, which enables effortless re-association between control buttons in the seats and the corresponding functions after cabin refurbishment. Meanwhile, automatic detection of missing/misplaced safety equipment can be carried out to improve the efficiency of flight preparation. There currently lacks an received signal strength-based three-dimensional sensor association method in indoor environments. The theoretical framework proposed in this paper aims to utilize the readily available received signal strength measurements to associate Commercial-Off-The-Shelf sensors to their possible installation points. This approach avoids the requirement of labor-intensive fingerprinting effort and high-cost equipment. The proposed approach has been tested and evaluated using both synthetic data and real data collected in a passenger plane as a proof of concept.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a multidisciplinary scientific field that uses machines to solve real-world problems and predict outcomes. Despite the current enthusiasm about AI's potential as a clinical support tool, there is also a growing awareness and concern about the potentially harmful effects of AI. Because AI will likely impact expert-based decision-making in medicine, it is critical to consider the ethical issues that AI raises in medical research. This paper outlines the AI ethics guidelines of the Australian Epilepsy Project. This large-scale platform aims to democratise specialist care in epilepsy and use AI for clinical decision support based on prospective multimodal datasets (MRI, genetic, clinical, and cognitive data) from thousands of people with epilepsy. As AI develops rapidly, we focus on key areas of medical AI ethics previously identified in the literature, including Transparency, Justice and Fairness, Non-maleficence, Responsibility, and Sustainability. We believe AI is changing the ethics of medicine, and it is imperative to advance and update ethical guidelines adaptably while preparing for an era of augmented-intelligence-based medicine.

Neuroimaging data analysis often requires purpose-built software, which can be challenging to install and may produce different results across computing environments. Beyond being a roadblock to neuroscientists, these issues of accessibility and portability can hamper the reproducibility of neuroimaging data analysis pipelines. Here, we introduce the Neurodesk platform, which harnesses software containers to support a comprehensive and growing suite of neuroimaging software (https://www.neurodesk.org/). Neurodesk includes a browser-accessible virtual desktop environment and a command line interface, mediating access to containerized neuroimaging software libraries on various computing platforms, including personal and high-performance computers, cloud computing and Jupyter Notebooks. This community-oriented, open-source platform enables a paradigm shift for neuroimaging data analysis, allowing for accessible, flexible, fully reproducible, and portable data analysis pipelines.

The development of gas turbine combustors is expected to consider the effects of radiation heat transfer in modeling. However, this is not always the case in many studies that neglect this for adiabatic conditions. The effect of radiation is substantiated here, concerning the impact on the performance, mainly the emissions. Also, the fuel–air unmixedness (mixing quality) influenced by the combustor design and operational settings has been investigated with regard to the emissions. The work was conducted with a Mitsubishi-type dry low NOx combustor developed and validated against experimental data. This 3D computational fluid dynamics study was implemented using Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes simulation and the radiative transfer equation model. It shows that NO, CO, and combustor outlet temperature reduce when the radiative effect is considered. The reductions are 17.6% and below 1% for the others, respectively. Thus, indicating a significant effect on NO. For unmixedness across the combustor in a non-reacting simulation, the mixing quality shows a direct relationship with the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) in the reacting case. The most significant improvements in unmixedness are shown around the main burner. Also, the baseload shows better mixing, higher TKE, and lower emissions (particularly NO) at the combustor outlet, compared to part-load.

BackgroundDuring the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a worldwide increase in the use of digital technology. Many people with learning disabilities have learned new digital skills, taken part in online activities, and kept in touch with family and friends using video calls. However, the experiences of digital participation or nonparticipation for the people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) is less understood.MethodBetween December 2020 and August 2021, family carers or paid support workers of adults with PMLD completed an online survey around the experiences of the person they care for during the Covid-19 pandemic, including questions on Internet use. We draw on the findings of this UK-wide study to explore the digital participation of the people with PMLD during the pandemic.FindingsAround half of the people with PMLD had Internet access at home. Around half of the participants interacted with others on video calls like Facetime or Zoom and most commonly used the Internet for being with family and friends online and streaming TV and films. In the event of another lockdown, 27.5% of the people supporting someone with PMLD said they would like support with technology to make seeing friends and family easier. For some the people, digital participation during the pandemic was not beneficial enough to want to continue when restrictions eased. For others, the new online experiences had the potential to be developed in their postpandemic lives.ConclusionAround half of the people surveyed participated in digital activities during Covid-19. Future attention is needed to afford more people opportunities, and respond to access barriers experienced for the people with PMLD and those that support them.Accessible SummaryDuring the Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of people with learning disabilities used the Internet more than they had done before. We present here the first evidence of the much-predicted double dissociation between the effect of stress on cognitive skills [executive functions (EFs)] dependent on prefrontal cortex (PFC) by catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) genotype. The COMT gene polymorphism with methionine (Met) at codon 158 results in more dopamine (DA) in PFC and generally better EFs, while with valine (Val) at codon 158 the result is less PFC DA and generally poorer EFs. Many have predicted that mild stress, by raising PFC DA levels should aid EFs of COMT-Vals (bringing their PFC DA levels up, closer to optimal) and impair EFs of COMT-Mets (raising their PFC DA levels past optimal). We tested 140 men and women in a within-subject crossover design using extremely mild social evaluative stress. On trials requiring EFs (incongruent trials) of the Flanker/Reverse Flanker task, COMT-Val158 homozygotes performed better when mildly stressed than when calmer, while COMT-Met158 carriers performed worse when mildly stressed. Two other teams previously tried to obtain this, but only found stress impairing EFs of COMT-Mets, not improving EFs of COMT-Vals. Perhaps we found both because we used a much milder stressor. Evidently, the bandwidth for stress having a facilitative effect on EFs is exceedingly narrow.

In this article, a preliminary design framework containing a detailed design methodology is developed for modern low emissions aero combustors. The inter-related design elements involving flow distribution, combustor sizing, heat transfer and cooling, emission and performance are coupled in the design process. The physics-based and numerical methods are provided in detail, in addition to empirical or semi-empirical methods. Feasibility assessment on the developed work is presented via case studies. The proposed combustor sizing methodology produces feasible combustor dimensions against the public-domain low emissions combustors. The results produced by the physics-based method show a reasonable agreement with experimental data to represent NOx emissions at key engine power conditions. The developed emission prediction method shows the potential to assess current and future technologies. A two-dimensional global prediction on liner wall temperature distribution for different cooling systems is reasonably captured by the developed finite difference method. It can be of use in the rapid identification of design solutions and initiating the optimisation of the design variables. The altitude relight efficiency predicted shows that the method could be used to provide an indicative assessment of combustor altitude relight capability at the preliminary design phase. The methodology is applied and shows that it enables the automatic design process for the development of a conceptual lean staged low emissions combustor. The design evaluation is then performed. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to assess the design uncertainties. The optimisation of the air distribution and cooling geometrical parameters addresses the trade-off between the NOx emissions and liner wall cooling, which demonstrates that the developed work has potential to identify and solve the design challenges at the early stages of the design process.

The operational flexibility of gas turbine (GT) engines is a key requirement to coexist alongside increasing renewable energy that is often intermittent. One of the GT flexibility criteria is the Minimum Environmental Load (MEL). This is the lowest load the engine can be operated, without infringing on emissions limits (particularly CO) and is relevant to periods when there is a priority to renewable generation or low power demand. This study along with a series of related works of the authors proposes compressor air extraction for MEL extension. Here, a stand-alone three-dimensional numerical dry low NOx combustor demonstrates the technical viability concerning combustor performance and emissions. In addition, supplemented with low-order models for durability and stability evaluations. For the first time, there is evidence to show that the combustor can handle the 18% compressed air extraction to sustain a new MEL. This operation is characterised by a 12.3% reduction in CO through an increase of the fuel split ratio by 2% after design exploration cases. However, at the expense of a smaller overall rise in NO emissions by 5%. The durability analysis focused on the wall liner temperature assessments, which show no unusually high temperature rise for the new MEL. Similarly, the thermoacoustic instability frequencies and gains are around the normal operation mode. When benchmarked against previous related engine-level analysis, the evidence shows that the new MEL is a 7% points reduction of load. European Union funding: 764545

Physics students have traditionally prepared many kinds of reports—laboratory, activity, project, and even book or article reports. Smartphones and YouTube videos are familiar cultural objects to current students, and our students use smartphone cameras to include photographs of apparatus, phenomena, hand-sketched figures, graphs, and mathematical equations in their physics reports. Here we present basic techniques for physics students to use smartphones and tablets to create short (< 5 min) end-of-semester video projects. Our students mainly use Apple Computer’s iPad tablets, but also other tablets and various smartphones. Finally we discuss appropriate instructor expectations and grading. Similar non-physics student video reporting efforts were reported using video cameras by Kearney, and Hechter and Guy.

Disability is often portrayed as a one-dimensional category devoid of further intersections. Work which has addressed the intersection of disability and male gender has rarely considered different types of disability or impairment or foregrounded the experiences of disabled men themselves. This paper is based on empirical work carried out in England with men who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We explored with participants their sense of themselves as men and their commonalities and differences with other men. Findings suggest that men with DMD claim, reject and redefine what it meant to them to be men. Doing gender was often heavily reliant on the availability and permission of others. Our study highlights the usefulness of exploring gender with men with particular experiences of disability and of looking at how this might change over a life course, especially when the nature and extent of the life course is a precarious one.

BackgroundGiven the much greater COVID-19 mortality risk experienced by people with intellectual disabilities, understanding the willingness of people with intellectual disabilities to take a COVID-19 vaccine is a major public health issue.MethodIn December 2020-February 2021, across the United Kingdom 621 adults with intellectual disabilities were interviewed remotely and 348 family carers or support workers of adults with intellectual disabilities with greater needs completed an online survey, including a question on willingness to take a COVID-19 vaccine if offered. Results87.0% of interviewees with intellectual disabilities were willing to take a COVID-19 vaccine, with willingness associated with white ethnicity, having already had a flu vaccine, gaining information about COVID-19 from television but not from social media, and knowing COVID-19 social restrictions rules. 81.7% of surveyed carers of adults with intellectual disabilities with greater needs reported that the person would be willing to take a COVID-19 vaccine, with willingness associated with white ethnicity, having a health condition of concern in the context of COVID-19, having had a flu vaccine, being close to someone who had died due to COVID-19, and having shielded at some point during the pandemic.ConclusionsReported willingness to take the COVID-19 vaccine is high amongst adults with intellectual disabilities in the UK, with factors associated with willingness having clear implications for public health policy and practice.

Hydrogen micromix combustion is a promising concept to reduce the environmental impact of both aero and land-based gas turbines by delivering carbon-free and ultra-low-NOx combustion. The high-reactivity and wide flammability limits of hydrogen in a micromix combustor can produce short and small diffusion flames at lean overall equivalence ratios. There is limited published information on the instabilities of such hydrogen micromix combustors. Diffusion flames are less prone to flashback and autoignition problems than premixed flames as well as combustion dynamics issues. However, with the high laminar flame speed of hydrogen, lean fuel air ratio (FAR) and very compact flames, the risk of combustion dynamics for micromix flames should not be neglected. In addition, the multi-segment array arrangement of the injectors could result in both potential causes and possible solutions to the instabilities within the combustor. This paper employs numerical simulations to investigate potential sources of instabilities in micromix flames by modelling an extended array of injectors, represented by either single or multiple injectors with appropriate boundary conditions at elevated pressure and temperature. Both RANS and LES simulations were performed and used to derive the Flame Transfer Function (FTF) of the micromix flames to inform lower order thermoacoustic modelling of micromix combustion. LES simulations indicate that the gain of the FTF is lower than predicted from the RANS simulations indicating a lower risk of high frequency thermoacoustic issues than suggested by RANS. When LES simulations are conducted for certain representative configurations it is observed that there are persistent high-frequency instabilities due to the interaction of the flames. This phenomenon is not observed when only a single injector is modelled. LES simulations for two injectors are conducted with various geometries and radial boundary conditions to identify the cause of the instabilities. It is concluded that the observed high-frequency instabilities are related to aerodynamic jet instabilities enhanced by both aerodynamic and acoustic feedback and key geometric features affecting the occurrence of the instabilities are identified. Only transient simulations such as LES are able to capture such effects and RANS simulations typically used in early stage design will not identify this issue.

Hydrogen micromix combustion is a promising concept to reduce the environmental impact of both aero and land-based gas turbines by delivering carbon-free and ultra-low-NOx combustion without the risk of autoignition or flashback. As a part of the ENABLEH2 project, the current study focuses on the influence of design parameters on the micromix hydrogen combustion injectors. This study provides deeper insights into the design space of a hydrogen micromix injection system via numerical simulations. The key geometrical design parameters of the micromix combustion system are the sizing of the air gates and the hydrogen injector orifices together with the offset distance between air gate and hydrogen injection, the mixing distance and the injector to injector spacing. This paper first presents results of the numerical simulation of four designs, down selected from a series of combinations of the key design parameters, including cases with low and high momentum flux ratio, weak and strong flame-flame interaction. It was discovered that the hydrogen/air mixing characteristics, and flame to flame interactions, are the main factors influencing the combustor gas temperature distributions, flame lengths and the corresponding NOx production. The current study then focused on the effect of air gate geometry on the mixing characteristics, flame shape and temperature distribution. The momentum flux ratio was kept constant throughout this investigation by keeping the air gate area constant. Variations of the original baseline air gate design were studied, followed by a study of various novel air gate geometries, including circular, semi-circular and elliptical shapes. It is concluded that NOx production is influenced by a number of factors including jet penetration flame interactions and air gate shape and that there is a “Sweet Spot” that results in the lowest practicable NOx production. Flatter and wider air gate shapes tend to yield the lowest temperature and consequently the lowest NOx. Reduced interaction between flames also tends to reduce NOx and by manipulating hydrogen penetration, there is the potential to further reduce the NOx production.

Despite the increasing personalization of medicine, surprisingly ~37.0°C (98.6°F) continues as the estimate of normal temperature. We investigated between-subject and within-subject thermal variability, whether a significant percentage of individuals have a low mean oral temperature, and whether these differ by sex, age, time of day, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), or menstrual phase. Oral temperature was measured by Life Brand® Fast-Read Digital Oral Thermometers and sampled 14 times over two weeks, seven morning and seven evening readings. The volunteer sample consisted of 96 adults (42 men, 54 women; 27 couples, 42 singletons), ages 18–67 years. We found sizeable individual differences in body temperature and that the normal temperature of many individuals is considerably lower than 37.0°C (98.6°F). Mean temperatures ranged from 35.2°C (95.4°F) to 37.4°C (99.3°F). The mean temperature across all participants was 36.1°C (97.0°F)—lower than most studies have reported, consistent with recent evidence of temperature declining over decades. 77% had mean temperatures at least 0.55°C (1°F) lower than 37.0°C (98.6°F). Mean temperature did not differ by age, but women had higher temperatures than men, even within a couple with room temperature and warmth of clothing equated. Although oral temperature varied widely across individuals, it showed marked stability within individuals over days. Variability of temperature over days did not differ by sex, but was larger among younger adults. Using 37.0°C (98.6°F) as the assumed normal temperature for everyone can result in healthcare professionals failing to detect a serious fever in individuals with a low normal temperature or obtaining false negatives for those individuals when using temperature to screen for COVID-19, mistaking their elevated temperature as normal. Some have called for lowering the estimate of normal temperature slightly (e.g., 0.2°C [0.36°F]). That still seems an overly high estimate. More important, using any standardized “normal” temperature will lead to errors for many people. Individual differences are simply too great. Personalizing body temperature is needed. Temperature could be measured at yearly doctor visits, as blood pressure is now. That would be simple to implement. Since our results show marked thermal stability within an individual, sampling temperature only once yearly could provide an accurate indication of a person’s normal temperature at that time of day. Such records over time would also provide a more accurate understanding of how temperature changes over the lifespan.

At the height of a policy-orientated commitment to the inclusion and human rights of people with intellectual disabilities in the UK, LGBT+ issues were highlighted. This followed a general climate of silence and invisibility for people with intellectual disabilities who identified as LGBT+. Research at the time suggested that this group faced significant barriers to realising human rights pertaining to inclusion and freedom from discrimination. Since the 2000s, there has been serious retrenchment of public spending and the lives of people with intellectual disabilities have not made obvious, systemic progress. At the same time, local initiates to support LGBT+ people with intellectual disabilities have sprung up across the UK —some lasting for several years and others not. This chapter takes stock of where things might be now and how the voices of LGBT+ people with intellectual disabilities survive and thrive as austerity continues and attitudes towards disabled people, in general, both evolve and sharpen. Accessible summary When people with learning disabilities have children and become parents, they sometimes need good support to help them.Research about parents with learning disabilities and the support they get is usually about mothers and not fathers. There is not very much written about dads with learning disabilities.This paper is about interviews with eight dads with learning disabilities who told us about what it was like to be a dad and about the kind of support they had got.We think more support needs to be given to parents with learning disabilities and that dads should be included in this. Abstract Background This article reports on the perspectives of fathers with a learning disability in England about being fathers and the support they have received. Although there is an established literature that considers parenting with a learning disability, few studies have focused on the perspectives of fathers. Method We adopted a qualitative approach for this study, using semi‐structured interviews with eight fathers with learning disabilities, recruited through learning disability organisations and social media. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results Being a father was important to participants and the findings are presented in three themes: descriptions of fatherhood; challenges of fatherhood; and support with fatherhood. Conclusion We discuss how fathers' perspectives on fatherhood relate to wider transformations of fatherhood in society, the impact of these on fathering with a learning disability and the implications for services.

Hydrogen micromix combustion is a promising concept to reduce the environmental impact of both aero and land-based gas turbines by delivering carbon-free and ultra-low-NOx combustion without the risk of autoignition or flashback. The ENABLEH2 project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of such a switch to hydrogen for civil aviation, within which the micromix combustion, as a key enabling technology, will be matured to TRL3. The micromix combustor comprises thousands of small diffusion flames for which air and fuel are mixed in a cross-flow pattern. This technology is based on the idea of minimizing the scale of mixing to maximize mixing intensity. The high-reactivity and wide flammability limits of hydrogen in a micromix combustor can produce short and low-temperature small diffusion flames in lean overall equivalence ratios. For hydrogen-air mixtures there is a need to further characterise the physical importance and calibration process of the laminar Schmidt (Sc), Lewis (Le) and Prandtl (Pr) and turbulent Schmidt (Sc) numbers. In addition, there is limited numerical and experimental data about flame characteristics and emissions of hydrogen micromix combustor at high pressure and temperature conditions. In this paper, the CFD software STAR-CCM+ was used with the FGM (Kinetic Rate) combustion model to simulate and calibrate hydrogen micromix flames. The research was divided into two parts. In the first part, the values of laminar Schmidt, Lewis and Prandtl numbers for H2 and air, non-reactive, flow mixtures were estimated as 0.22, 0.3 and 0.75 from correlations obtained in the literature. The typical Borghi diagram has been modified to represent this type of diffusion flame, since the assumption of Sc = Le = Pr = 1 can not be applied to hydrogen micromix flames and it is only for premixed flames. This diagram characterizes flame regime based on Damköhler (Da), Karlovitz (Ka) and turbulent Reynolds (Ret) numbers that were calculated from preliminary CFD simulations. In the second part, the value of laminar Schmidt number was set as constant while laminar Lewis and Prandtl numbers were obtained from the flamelet tables. A Turbulent Schmidt number was then obtained by comparing RANS and LES simulations of a single injector. If Sct > 0.2, the predicted NOx production of RANS simulations approaches that of LES; while Sct < 0.2 provides similar overall flame structure between RANS and LES. It is concluded that, for the current simulations, Sct = 0.2 is a good compromise between flame structure and emissions prediction. Flame characteristics and NOx emissions given by Thickened Flame and FGM Kinetic Rate models in a single injector geometry were also compared.

Understanding social interactions in livestock groups could improve management practices, but this can be difficult and time-consuming using traditional methods of live observations and video recordings. Sensor technologies and machine learning techniques could provide insight not previously possible. In this study, based on the animals&rsquo, location information acquired by a new cooperative wireless localisation system, unsupervised machine learning approaches were performed to identify the social structure of a small group of cattle yearlings (n=10) and the social behaviour of an individual. The paper first defined the affinity between an animal pair based on the ranks of their distance. Unsupervised clustering algorithms were then performed, including K-means clustering and agglomerative hierarchical clustering. In particular, K-means clustering was applied based on logical and physical distance. By comparing the clustering result based on logical distance and physical distance, the leader animals and the influence of an individual in a herd of cattle were identified, which provides valuable information for studying the behaviour of animal herds. Improvements in device robustness and replication of this work would confirm the practical application of this technology and analysis methodologies.

The purpose of this research was to study the various aspects of root, shoot and reproductive growth of the cultivated highbush blueberry under normal conditions and as influenced by seasonal root zone flooding. These studies were conducted on three cultivars' Earliblue', 'Bluecrop', and 'Lateblue' for up to three years. Root, shoot, and reproductive growth were measured at intervals throughout the years and the soil temperature and stage of plant development recorded. Growth of white unsuberized roots peaked in early-June and September when soil temperatures were in the range of 14 to 18°c and was concomitant with shoot growth. Some plants survived more than 26 months of continuous flooding, but growth was decreased after approximately four months. April submerged plants had the greatest percentage of death followed by the August and December flooded plants. Vegetative and reproductive growth were greatly reduced with flooding. Anthesis was delayed by almost one week and fruit abscision was increased in flooded plants. There was an increase in size of epidermal cells of roots from flooded plants. As professional communities around the world, geoscientists have in place disciplinary measures and, over time, instances have occurred which have required disciplinary actions to be taken against individuals. Geoscientists have specialized knowledge and provide expertise on which others rely for important decision- making. Geoscientists are best positioned to judge the scientific/technical and ethical merits of the work of other geoscientists. They are considered professionals and for that reason, society has placed the onus on the profession to govern itself. Consequently, it is important that appropriate disciplinary procedures are in place, that they are ever improving, and that the profession can and does act decisively when necessary. This two-part review paper examines systems and measures to uphold the ethical conduct of geoscientists (Part 1), and studies actions taken against geoscientists in the last three decades (Part 2). It uses available information collected from the member organizations of the International Union of Geological Sciences’ Task Group on Global Geoscience Professionalism as well as public sources. Models used for the governance and self-regulation of geoscience practice vary globally across the same spectrum that is typical in other professions, with the choice of model varying to suit local legal contexts and societal needs and norms. Broadly, similar processes for complaints, investigation, and disciplinary decision-making (and appeals of decisions) are used. The types of charges that can be made for offences or allegations are similar. The ranges of applicable penalties vary depending on the extent of statutory power in place, but beyond this constraint, there are many parallels. Ninety-two documented cases are identified where action has been taken against geoscientists globally since 1989. Of these, 40 relate to either non-payment of dues or fees (usually discontinuation of a membership or license) or to non-compliance with Continuing Professional Development requirements. The remaining 52 are actions for more serious offenses, resulting in penalties that are more substantial. These offences cluster into six categories: 1) falsifying data; 2) fraudulent billing and/or falsifying time sheets; 3) inappropriate behaviour towards others; 4) problematic geoscience work and/or technical deficiencies; 5) misrepresentation of findings, or the giving of unsupported opinions; and 6) mixed other offences. The most frequently used penalty in these cases is the reprimand. Next most frequent is revocation. Revocations include resignations with prejudice, where the geoscientist chose to resign their membership rather than allow the matter to proceed to discipline. Suspensions, requirements for remedial education and/or fines are also frequent penalties. Combinations of different penalties are common. It is evident that rigorous procedures are in place in a number of countries and that they are being used to address the unprofessional behaviour of geoscientists. Transparency and the sharing of information about disciplinary actions between geoscience professional organizations (of all types) is important and should be encouraged. A global repository of geoscience disciplinary actions should be established and kept as up to date as possible.RÉSUMÉÀ l’instar des autres organismes professionnels à travers le monde, les géoscientifiques possèdent leur protocole de mesures disciplinaires. Il est arrivé à quelques reprises que ces mesures aient été mises en application et que des sanctions disciplinaires aient été intentées contre certains individus. Un géoscientifique possède une connaissance spécialisée et livre une expertise qui, en retour, peut servir de référence dans la prise d’importantes décisions. Il n’existe aucun autre professionnel qu’un géoscientifique pour évaluer les mérites d’ordres moral, scientifique et technique d’un de ses pairs. Et c’est en se basant sur le professionnalisme de la géoscience que la société a imputé la responsabilité d’auto-gouvernance à la profession. Par conséquent, il est important que des mesures disciplinaires soient, non seulement mises en place, mais qu’elles soient également régulièrement revisitées. Et il est tout aussi important que la profession puisse agir et prendre ses responsabilités lorsqu’il est jugé nécessaire. Cette étude qui comporte deux volets traite, en premier lieu, des systèmes et des mesures mis en place pour entériner le code de conduite des géoscientifiques et en deuxième lieu, elle examine les actions intentées à l’encontre des géoscientifiques durant les 30 dernières années. Notre ouvrage est basé sur des données et des renseignements recueillis d’associations membres du Groupe de travail de l’Union Internationale des sciences géologiques sur le Professionnalisme géoscientifique mondial ainsi que de sources publiques. Comme on peut s’y attendre, les modèles qui sont utilisés pour la gouvernance et l’autoréglementation de l’exercice de la géoscience à travers le monde diffèrent de pays en pays, dépendant des contextes légaux des différentes régions, de leurs besoins particuliers et des coutumes sociales. En gros, les mêmes processus sont utilisés pour les plaintes, les enquêtes et les prises de décisions de sanctions (et les appels des jugements rendus). Les différents types de sanctions qui sont rendues pour les infractions ou allégations sont les mêmes. La nature des mesures punitives applicables demeure tributaire des pouvoirs statutaires en vigueur, mais à part cette contrainte, on a pu dresser entre elles plusieurs parallèles. Nous avons identifié quatre-vingt-douze cas, documentés, où des actions ont été intentées contre des géoscientifiques à l’échelle mondiale depuis 1989. De ces 92 cas, 40 concernent, soit le défaut de paiement de cotisations ou frais d’adhésion (en général, il s’agit d’une suspension d’adhésion ou de droit d’exercice), soit le manque de conformité aux exigences des programmes de Développement professionnel continu. Les 52 cas qui restent ont trait à des offenses plus sérieuses qui ont donné suite à des sanctions plus graves. Les infractions ont été divisées en six catégories: 1) falsification de données; 2) facturation frauduleuse et/ou falsification des relevés de temps; 3) comportement inapproprié vis-à-vis d’autres personnes; 4) situations de travail géoscientifique problématiques et/ou irrégularités d’ordre technique; 5) fausse déclaration de résultats ou énoncé d’opinions sans preuves; et 6) autres diverses infractions. La mesure punitive la plus répandue pour ce genre d’offenses est la réprimande. Puis, la deuxième plus répandue est la révocation. La révocation peut inclure une démission volontaire sans appel, c’est-à-dire que le géoscientifique choisit de renoncer à son adhésion à la profession plutôt que de voir son cas jugé. D’autres sanctions qui reviennent souvent comportent des suspensions, des amendes et des ordres d’éducation complémentaire. On retrouve également fréquemment des combinaisons de sanctions différentes. Il est évidentqu’il existe des procédures rigoureuses dans de nombreux pays et que ces procédures sont donc mises en œuvre pour gérer les inconduites professionnelles des géoscientifiques. La transparence et le partage de l’information concernant les mesures disciplinaires entre tous les différents organismes professionnels géoscientifiques sont extrêmement importants et doivent être encouragés. Un répertoire mondial des mesures disciplinaires en géoscience doit être mis sur pied et doit être constamment mis à jour aussi souvent que possible.
