Van Valen’s test is usually applied as a two sample test for equality of dispersion for multivariate data. Motivated by a comment of Manly (Van Valen’s test. Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, 2006) that “Little is known about the properties of Van Valen’s test” we develop an alternative test and compare the Van Valen test with our alternative robust test in an extensive simulation study. We find that Van Valen’s test does not actually test for equality of variance sums; however, for that null hypothesis it still performs well in terms of closeness to the nominal significance level. Due to testing the correct null hypothesis and the excellent adherence to the nominal significance level, we recommend the use of the robust test as a permutation test.

We present a study of chemistry toward 294 dense cores in 12 molecular clumps using the data obtained from the ALMA Survey of 70 $μ\rm m$ dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). We identified 97 protostellar cores and 197 prestellar core candidates based on the detection of outflows and molecular transitions of high upper energy levels ($E_{u}/k > 45$ K). The detection rate of the N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ emission toward the protostellar cores is 38%, which is higher than 9% for the prestellar cores, indicating that N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ does not exclusively trace prestellar cores. The detection rates of the DCO$^{+}$ emission are 35% for the prestellar cores and 49% for the protostellar cores, which are higher than those of N$_{2}$D$^{+}$, implying that DCO$^{+}$ appears more frequently than N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ in both prestellar and protostellar cores. Both N$_{2}$D$^{+}$ and DCO$^{+}$ abundances appear to decrease from the prestellar to protostellar stage. The DCN, C$_{2}$D and $^{13}$CS emission lines are rarely seen in the dense cores of early evolutionary phases. The detection rate of the H$_{2}$CO emission toward dense cores is 52%, three times higher than that of CH$_{3}$OH (17%). In addition, the H$_{2}$CO detection rate, abundance, line intensities, and line widths increase with the core evolutionary status, suggesting that the H$_{2}$CO line emission is sensitive to protostellar activity., Accepted for Publication in ApJ. 36 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. Studying the physical and chemical properties of cold and dense molecular clouds is crucial for the understanding of how stars form. Under the typical conditions of infrared dark clouds, CO is removed from the gas phase and trapped on to the surface of dust grains by the so-called depletion process. This suggests that the CO depletion factor ($f_{\rm D}$) can be a useful chemical indicator for identifying cold and dense regions (i.e., prestellar cores). We have used the 1.3 mm continuum and C$^{18}$O(2-1) data observed at the resolution of $\sim$5000 au in the ALMA Survey of 70 $\mu$m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES) to construct averaged maps of $f_{\rm D}$ in twelve clumps to characterise the earliest stages of the high-mass star formation process. The average $f_{\rm D}$ determined for 277 of the 294 ASHES cores follows an unexpected increase from the prestellar to the protostellar stage. If we exclude the temperature effect due to the slight variations in the NH$_3$ kinetic temperature among different cores, we explain this result as a dependence primarily on the average gas density, which increases in cores where protostellar conditions prevail. This shows that $f_{\rm D}$ determined in high-mass star-forming regions at the core scale is insufficient to distinguish among prestellar and protostellar conditions for the individual cores, and should be complemented by information provided by additional tracers. However, we confirm that the clump-averaged $f_{\rm D}$ values correlates with the luminosity-to-mass ratio of each source, which is known to trace the evolution of the star formation process., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. Using molecular line data from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz Survey (MALT90), we have searched the optically thick \hcop\, line for the "blue asymmetry" spectroscopic signature of infall motion in a large sample of high-mass, dense molecular clumps observed to be at different evolutionary stages of star cluster formation according to their mid-infrared appearance. To quantify the degree of the line asymmetry, we measure the asymmetry parameter $A = {{I_{blue}-I_{red}}\over{I_{blue}+I_{red}}}$, the fraction of the integrated intensity that lies to the blueshifted side of the systemic velocity determined from the optically thin tracer \nthp. For a sample of 1,093 sources, both the mean and median of $A$ are positive ($A = 0.083\pm0.010$ and $0.065\pm0.009$, respectively) with high statistical significance, and a majority of sources (a fraction of $0.607 \pm 0.015$ of the sample) show positive values of A, indicating a preponderance of blue-asymmetric profiles over red-asymmetric profiles. Two other measures, the local slope of the line at the systemic velocity and the $\delta v$ parameter of \citet{Mardones1997}, also show an overall blue asymmetry for the sample, but with smaller statistical significance. This blue asymmetry indicates that these high-mass clumps are predominantly undergoing gravitational collapse. The blue asymmetry is larger ($A \sim 0.12$) for the earliest evolutionary stages (quiescent, protostellar and compact H II region) than for the later H II region ($A \sim 0.06$) and PDR ($A \sim 0$) classifications., Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures

Exactly how high-mass star clusters form, especially the young massive clusters (YMCs: age $10^4$ solar masses), remains an open problem, largely because they are so rare that examples of their cold, dense, molecuar progenitors remain elusive. The molecular cloud G337.342$-$0.119, the `Pebble,' is a candidate for such a cold progenitor. Although G337.342$-$0.119 was originally identified as four separate ATLASGAL clumps, the similarity in their molecular line velocities and linewidths in the MALT90 dataset demonstrate that these four clumps are in fact one single, coherent cloud. This cloud is unique in the MALT90 survey for its combination of both cold temperatures ($T_{dust} \sim 14$ K) and large linewidths $(��V \sim 10$ km s$^{-1}$). The near/far kinematic distance ambiguity is difficult to resolve for G337.342$-$0.119. At the near kinematic distance (4.7 kpc), the mass is 5,000 solar masses and the size is $7\times2$ pc. At the far kinematic distance (11 kpc), the mass is 27,000 solar masses and the size is $15 \times 4$ pc. The unusually large linewidths of G337.342$-$0.119 are difficult to reconcile with a gravitationally bound system in equilibrium. If our current understanding of the Galaxy's Long Bar is approximately correct, G337.342$-$0.119 cannot be located at its end. Rather, it is associated with a large star-forming complex that contains multiple clumps with large linewidths. If G337.342$-$0.119 is a prototypical cold progenitor for a high-mass cluster, its properties may indicate that the onset of high-mass star cluster formation is dominated by extreme turbulence., 19 pages, 9 figures

SUMMARYAn innovative strategy to reduce dengue transmission uses the bacteriumWolbachia. We analysed the effects ofWolbachiaon dengue transmission dynamics in the presence of two serotypes of dengue using a mathematical model, allowing for differences in the epidemiological characteristics of the serotypes. We found thatWolbachiahas a greater effect on secondary infections than on primary infections across a range of epidemiological characteristics. If one serotype is more transmissible than the other, it will dominate primary infections andWolbachiawill be less effective at reducing secondary infections of either serotype. Differences in the antibody-dependent enhancement of the two serotypes have considerably less effect on the benefits ofWolbachiathan differences in transmission probability. Even if the antibody-dependent enhancement rate is high,Wolbachiais still effective in reducing dengue. Our findings suggest thatWolbachiawill be effective in the presence of more than one serotype of dengue; however, a better understanding of serotype-specific differences in transmission probability may be needed to optimize delivery of aWolbachiaintervention.

To test for equality of variances in independent random samples from multiple univariate normal populations, the test of first choice would usually be the likelihood ratio test, the Bartlett test. This test is known to be powerful when normality can be assumed. Here two Wald tests of equality of variances are derived. The first test compares every variance with every other variance and was announced in Mather and Rayner (2002), but no proof was given there. The second test is derived from a quite different model using orthogonal contrasts, but is identical to the first. This second test statistic is similar to one given in Rippon and Rayner (2010), for which no empirical assessment has been given. These tests are compared with the Bartlett test in size and power. The Bartlett test is known to be nonrobust to the normality assumption, as is the orthogonal contrasts test. To deal with this difficulty an analogue of the new test is given. The analysis of partially balanced incomplete block (PBIB) ranked data is discussed. Two examples are given to illustrate two alternative approaches. Analysis of PBIB ranking data is not covered in any of the standard sensory evaluation texts and this expository note is meant to help fill this gap. For some data sets, the calculations for the first approach are simple enough to do by hand. The second approach that we consider assumes that computer software for general analysis of variance is available. Such analysis of variance software should cope with missing values via a regression method. A suggested multiple comparisons algorithm is also illustrated. R code is given to allow easy application of our first approach. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Sensory fatigue can be a problem in some sensory evaluation trials. In the taste-test area, this is sometimes called “palate paralysis.” To cope with this fatigue, balanced incomplete block designs can be employed. However, these restrict the sensory scientist to particular combinations of products, subjects and evaluations per subject. Sometimes, such restrictions can be prohibitive, and then partially balanced designs, which allow more freedom in the choice of these parameters, can be used. Here we consider statistical analysis of ranking data from partially balanced incomplete block designs.

Small world network models have been effective in capturing the variable behaviour of reported case data of the SARS coronavirus outbreak in Hong Kong during 2003. Simulations of these models have previously been realized using informed “guesses” of the proposed model parameters and tested for consistency with the reported data by surrogate analysis. In this paper we attempt to provide statistically rigorous parameter distributions using Approximate Bayesian Computation sampling methods. We find that such sampling schemes are a useful framework for fitting parameters of stochastic small world network models where simulation of the system is straightforward but expressing a likelihood is cumbersome.

To evaluate coding strategies for cochlear implants a model of the human cochlear nerve is required. Nerve models based on voltage-clamp experiments, such as the Frankenhaeuser-Huxley model of myelinated nerve, can have over forty parameters and are not amenable for fitting to physiological data from a different animal or type of nerve. Phenomenological nerve models, such as leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) models, have fewer parameters but have not been validated with a wide range of stimuli. In the absence of substantial cochlear nerve data, we have used data from a toad sciatic nerve for validation (50 Hz to 2 kHz with levels up to 20 dB above threshold). We show that the standard LIF model with fixed refractory properties and a single set of parameters cannot adequately predict the toad rate-level functions. Given the deficiency of this standard model, we have abstracted the dynamics of the sodium inactivation variable in the Frankenhaeuser-Huxley model to develop a phenomenological LIF model with a dynamic threshold. This nine-parameter model predicts the physiological rate-level functions much more accurately than the standard LIF model. Because of the low number of parameters, we expect to be able to optimize the model parameters so that the model is more appropriate for cochlear implant simulations.

Cochran–Mantel–Haenszel (CMH) test statistics can be used to compare products rated on JAR ‘just about right’ scales and for similar categorical data. In this note we consider the case of paired or related data. The simplified statistics we give allow ‘by hand’ calculation when the data set is small. We also give an R package for larger data sets or for when the user is not interested in ‘by hand’ calculation.

Phenomenological neural models, such as the leaky integrate-and-fire model, normally have a fixed refractory time-course that is independent of the stimulus. The recovery of threshold following an action potential is typically based on physiological experiments that use a two-pulse paradigm in which the first pulse is suprathreshold and causes excitation and the second pulse is used to determine the threshold at various intervals following the first. In such experiments, the nerve is completely unstimulated between the two pulses. This contrasts the receptor stimuli in normal physiological systems and the electrical stimuli used by cochlear implants and other neural prostheses. A numerical study of the Frankenhaeuser-Huxley conductance-based model of nerve fibre was therefore undertaken to investigate the effect of stimulation on refractoriness. We found that the application of a depolarizing stimulus during the later part of what is classically regarded as the absolute refractory period could effectively prolong the absolute refractory period, while leaving the refractory time-constants and other refractory parameters largely unaffected. Indeed, long depolarizing pulses, which would have been suprathreshold if presented to a resting nerve fibre, appeared to block excitation indefinitely. Stimulation during what is classically regarded as the absolute refractory period can therefore greatly affect the temporal response of a nerve. We conclude that the classical definition of absolute refractory period should be refined to include only the initial period following an action potential when an ongoing stimulus would not affect threshold; this period was found to be about half as long as the classical absolute refractory period. We further conclude that the stimulus-dependent nature of the relative refractory period must be considered when developing a phenomenological nerve model for complex stimuli.

In this paper we explore the possibility of using a recently discovered form of stochastic resonance - termed suprathreshold stochastic resonance - to improve speech comprehension in patients fitted with cochlear implants. A leaky-integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurone is used to model cochlear nerve activity when subject to electrical stimulation. This model, in principle, captures key aspects of temporal coding in analogue cochlear implants. Estimates for the information transmitted by a population of nerve fibres is obtained as a function of internal (neuronal) noise level. We conclude that SSR does indeed provide a possible mechanism by which information transmission along the cochlear nerve can be improved - and thus may well lead to improved speech comprehension.

Knowing a probability density (ideally, an invariant density) for the trajectories of a dynamical system allows many significant estimates to be made, from the well-known dynamical invariants such as Lyapunov exponents and mutual information to conditional probabilities which are potentially more suitable for prediction than the single number produced by most predictors. Densities on typical attractors have properties, such as singularity with respect to Lebesgue measure, which make standard density estimators less useful than one would hope. In this paper we present a new method of estimating densities which can smooth in a way that tends to preserve fractal structure down to some level, and that also maintains invariance. We demonstrate with applications to real and artificial data.

We investigate the reconstruction of embedded time-series from chaotic dynamical systems using wavelets. The standard wavelet transforms are not applicable because of the embedding, and we use a basis pursuit method which on its own does not perform very well. When this is combined with a continuous optimizer, however, we obtain very good models. We discuss the success of this method and apply it to some data from a vibrating string experiment.

Cochlear implants are used to restore functional hearing to people with profound deafness. Success, as measured by speech intelligibility scores, varies greatly amongst patients; a few receive almost no benefit while some are able to use a telephone under favourable listening conditions. Using a novel nerve model and the principles of suprathreshold stochastic resonance, we demonstrate that the rate of information transfer through a cochlear implant system can be globally maximized by the addition of noise. If this additional information could be used by the brain then it would lead to greater speech intelligibility, which is important given that the intelligibility of all cochlear implant recipients is poorer than that of people with normal hearing, particularly in adverse listening conditions.

In this article we discuss the possible use of a novel form of stochastic resonance, termed suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR), to improve signal encoding/transmission in cochlear implants. A model, based on the leaky-integrate-and-fire (LIF) neuron, has been developed from physiological data and use to model information flow in a population of cochlear nerve fibres. It is demonstrated that information flow can, in principle, be enhanced by the SSR effect. Furthermore, SSR was found to enhance information transmission for signal parameters that are commonly encountered in cochlear implants. This, therefore, gives hope that SSR may be implemented in cochlear implants to improve speech comprehension.

Cochlear implants have become a standard method of providing functional hearing to people who are otherwise profoundly deaf. We present a rigorous design methodology for cochlear implants, based on the premise that neural coding in the normal ear is almost optimal in terms of information transmission. We propose that a cochlear implant should be designed to maximize the information conveyed by the artificially stimulated cochlear nerve. The deliberate addition of noise to cochlear implant signals is an essential part of this strategy.

International audience; The focus of this paper is on the sensitivity to the specification of the prior in a hidden Markov model describing homogeneous segments of DNA sequences. An intron from the chimpanzee α-fetoprotein gene, which plays an im- portant role in embryonic development in mammals is analysed. Three main aims are considered : (i) to assess the sensitivity to prior specification in Bayesian hidden Markov models for DNA sequence segmentation; (ii) to examine the impact of replacing the standard Dirichlet prior with a mixture Dirichlet prior; and (iii) to propose and illus- trate a more comprehensive approach to sensitivity analysis, using importance sampling. It is obtained that (i) the posterior estimates obtained under a Bayesian hidden Markov model are indeed sensitive to the specification of the prior distributions; (ii) compared with the standard Dirichlet prior, the mixture Dirichlet prior is more flexible, less sensitive to the choice of hyperparameters and less constraining in the analysis, thus improving posterior estimates; and (iii) importance sampling was computationally feasible, fast and effective in allowing a richer sensitivity analysis.
