Publisher Summary The chapter relates the experiences of two researchers who conducted qualitative research using the web as a main data source. It is in contrast with those researches that follow the more traditional fieldwork approach of gathering and analyzing interview data. The chapter illustrates the practical opportunities and the potential pitfalls inherent in such research. It argues that in web-based research, the generation of research ideas and the collection of data are integrated and are interdependent activities. The two web-based projects are presented not in a traditional academic paper style but as stylized and intertwined narratives. The chapter also reviews the motivation behind the studies and explains how they started. It describes how the research process circulated through iterative stages of investigation, refinement, refocusing, and back to investigation, and outlines the lessons learnt at every stage. It discusses the outcomes from each study and reviews the research methods. The chances of publication of this kind of research in the context of the outputs from the studies are discussed as well.
