Starshade concepts must be stowed within rocket fairings for launch and then deployed in space. The in-plane deployment accuracy must be on the order of hundreds of micrometers for sufficient starlight suppression to enable the detection and study of Earth-like exoplanets around nearby Sun-like stars. We describe tests conducted to demonstrate deployment repeatability of two key structural subsystems of the “furled” starshade architecture—the petal and the inner disk. Together, the petals and the inner disk create the in-plane shape of a starshade. Test articles to represent the petal and inner disk subsystems were constructed at relevant scales for a 26-m-diameter starshade. These test articles were subjected to stowage-and-deployment cycles and their shapes were measured. The measured performance—tens of parts per million of petal strain after deployment, and hundreds of micrometers of inner disk deployment accuracy—was found to be within required allocations.

Here, we determine annual estimates of occupancy and species trends for 5,293 UK bryophytes, lichens, and invertebrates, providing national scale information on UK biodiversity change for 31 taxonomic groups for the time period 1970 to 2015. The dataset was produced through the application of a Bayesian occupancy modelling framework to species occurrence records supplied by 29 national recording schemes or societies (n = 24,118,549 records). In the UK, annual measures of species status from fine scale data (e.g. 1 × 1 km) had previously been limited to a few taxa for which structured monitoring data are available, mainly birds, butterflies, bats and a subset of moth species. By using an occupancy modelling framework designed for use with relatively low recording intensity data, we have been able to estimate species trends and generate annual estimates of occupancy for taxa where annual trend estimates and status were previously limited or unknown at this scale. International audience; Aim: Poleward range shifts of species are among the most obvious effects of climate change on biodiversity. As a consequence of these range shifts, species communities are predicted to become increasingly composed of warm‐dwelling species, but this has only been studied for a limited number of taxa, mainly birds, butterflies and plants. As species groups may vary considerably in their adaptation to climate change, it is desirable to expand these studies to other groups, from different ecosystems. Freshwater macroinvertebrates, such as dragonflies (Odonata), have been ranked among the species groups with highest priority. In this paper, we investigate how the occurrence of dragonflies in Europe has changed in recent decades, and if these changes are in parallel with climate change.Location: Europe.Methods: We use data from 10 European geographical regions to calculate occupancy indices and trends for 99 (69%) of the European species. Next, we combine these regional indices to calculate European indices. To determine if changes in regional dragonfly communities in Europe reflect climatic warming, we calculate Species Temperature Indices (STI), Multi‐species Indicators (MSI) and Community Temperature Indices (CTI).Results: 55 of 99 considered species increased in occupancy at European level, 32 species remained stable, and none declined. Trends for 12 species are uncertain. MSI of cold‐dwelling and warm‐dwelling species differ in some of the regions, but increased at a similar rate at European level. CTI increased in all regions, except Cyprus. The European CTI increased slightly.Main conclusions: European dragonflies, in general, have expanded their distribution in response to climate change, even though their CTI lags behind the increase in temperature. Furthermore, dragonflies proved to be a suitable species group for monitoring changes in communities, both at regional and continental level.

GaN HEMT reliability evaluation in a typical Arrhenius manner requires establishing peak junction temperature for a particular stress condition. Several new techniques have yielded promising results toward establishing peak temperature for these devices in combination with detailed physical modeling, particularly micro-Raman imaging. This paper compares results from finite element modeling to measurements by infrared imaging and micro-Raman imaging. The limitations of IR imaging were confirmed similar to earlier reports. Two techniques for establishing temperature from micro-Raman measurements were used to reveal excellent correlation to the model, and also provide insight into the relationship between temperature and structural change in the device. Temperature modeling data is reported for base plate temperature from 85°C to 250°C for practical GaN HEMT devices. Implications of the measurements for GaN HEMT reliability stress testing and analysis will be discussed. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
