1. Too stressed to think? A scoping review of the literature for healthcare educators utilising high acuity clinical scenarios

Abstract: Abstract Background The practise of paramedicine can be highly stressful particularly where urgent lifesaving decisions need to be made. Traditionally, educators have adopted the approach of placing students in simulated stressful situations as a way of learning to cope with these challenges. It is unclear from the literature whether traditional stress inoculation enhances or hinders learning. This scoping review aims to identify and examine both the peer-reviewed and grey literature reporting physiological stress responses to high-acuity scenarios in paramedicine and cognate healthcare disciplines. Methods Adhering strictly to JBI Evidence Synthesis Manual for conducting a scoping review, medical subject headings and areas, keywords and all other possible index terms were searched across EBSCOhost (Medline, CINAHL and APA PsycInfo), Scopus and, PubMed. English language articles both published (peer-reviewed academic papers, reports and conference proceedings) and unpublished (grey literature, Google Scholar reports) were included, and publications citing retrieved articles were also checked. Results Searches performed across five electronic databases identified 52 articles where abstracts indicated potential inclusion. From this, 22 articles which reported physiological or psychophysiological responses to stressful scenario-based education were included. Conclusion This review identified that an acceptable level of stress during simulation can be beneficial, however a point can be exceeded where stress becomes a hinderance to learning resulting in underperformance. By identifying strategies to moderate the impact of acute stress, educators of paramedic and other healthcare students can utilise high-acuity clinical scenarios to their andragogical armamentarium which has the potential to improve real-world clinical outcomes.

Abstract: IntroductionLa pandémie de COVID-19 a eu des effets importants sur la santé mentale des adolescents. Toutefois, on en sait peu sur la recherche de soutien, les besoins non comblés et les préférences des adolescents en matière de soins de santé mentale. MéthodologieL’instrument YDI (Youth Development Instrument, ou Instrument de mesure du développement des jeunes) est une enquête menée auprès d’adolescents (N = 1 928; âge moyen = 17,1; écart-type [ET] = 0,3) dans des écoles de la Colombie-Britannique (Canada). Nous avons évalué, dans la cohorte de l’enquête, les caractéristiques des ressources de soutien en santé mentale consultées, la prévalence des besoins non comblés et la préférence pour les services offerts en personne ou les services offerts sur Internet. RésultatsDans l’ensemble, 40 % des adolescents ont déclaré avoir consulté une ressource de soutien en santé mentale et 41 % ont vu leurs besoins non comblés. Les ressources de soutien le plus souvent consultées ont été les médecins de famille ou les pédiatres (23,1 %) et les adultes à l’école (20,6 %). Le mode de prestation de soins de santé mentale préféré par les adolescents était le counseling en personne (72,4 %), suivi par les services offerts par clavardage (15,0 %), par téléphone (8,1 %) et par appel vidéo (4,4 %). La prévalence ajustée de l’accès à du soutien était élevée chez les adolescents souffrant d’anxiété (ratio de prévalence ajusté [RPa] = 1,29; intervalle de confiance [IC] à 95 % : 1,10 à 1,51), les adolescents consommant de l’alcool (RPa = 1,14; IC à 95 % : 1,01 à 1,29), les minorités de genre (RPa = 1,28; IC à 95 % : 1,03 à 1,58) et les minorités sexuelles (RPa = 1,28; IC à 95 % : 1,03 à 1,45). La prévalence ajustée des besoins non comblés était élevée chez les adolescents souffrant de dépression (1,90; IC à 95 % : 1,67 à 2,18), les adolescents souffrant d’anxiété (RPa = 1,78; 1,56 à 2,03), les adolescentes (RPa = 1,43; IC à 95 % : 1,31 à 1,58), les minorités de genre (1,45; IC à 95 % : 1,23 à 1,70) et les minorités sexuelles (RPa = 1,15; IC à 95 % : 1,07 à 1,23). ConclusionLes adolescents faisant partie d’une minorité de genre ou d’une minorité sexuelle et les adolescents souffrant d’anxiété ont été plus susceptibles que les autres d’avoir parlé de leurs préoccupations en lien avec leur santé mentale et également d’avoir fait état de besoins non comblés. Les sources de soutien les plus courantes ont été les fournisseurs de soins de santé primaires et les adultes à l’école, tandis que le mode de soutien préféré a été les services en personne et le moins aimé, les services par appel vidéo.

3. Access to mental health support, unmet need and preferences among adolescents during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread effects on adolescent mental health. However, little is known about support-seeking, unmet need and preferences for mental health care among adolescents. MethodsThe Youth Development Instrument (YDI) is a school-administered survey of adolescents (N = 1928, mean age = 17.1, SD = 0.3) across British Columbia, Canada. In this cohort, we assessed the characteristics of accessed mental health supports, prevalence of unmet need and preferences for in-person versus internet-based services. ResultsOverall, 40% of adolescents obtained support for mental health, while 41% experienced unmet need. The most commonly accessed supports were family doctors or pediatricians (23.1%) and adults at school (20.6%). The most preferred mode of mental health care was in-person counselling (72.4%), followed by chat-based services (15.0%), phone call (8.1%) and video call (4.4%). The adjusted prevalence of accessing support was elevated among adolescents with anxiety (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.10–1.51), those who used alcohol (1.14, 1.01–1.29), gender minorities (1.28, 1.03–1.58) and sexual minorities (1.28, 1.03–1.45). The adjusted prevalence of unmet need was elevated among adolescents with depression (1.90, 1.67–2.18), those with anxiety (1.78, 1.56–2.03), females (1.43, 1.31–1.58), gender minorities (1.45, 1.23–1.70) and sexual minorities (1.15, 1.07–1.23). ConclusionAdolescents of gender or sexual minority status and those with anxiety were more likely than others to have discussed mental health concerns and also to have reported unmet need. The most common sources of support were primary health care providers and adults at school, while the most and least preferred modes of support were in-person and video call services, respectively.

Abstract: Abstract Shocklets and short large‐amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS) are steepened magnetic fluctuations commonly found in Earth's upstream foreshock. Here we present Venus Express observations from the 26th of February 2009 establishing their existence in the steady‐state foreshock of Venus, building on a past study which found SLAMS during a substantial disturbance of the induced magnetosphere. The Venusian structures were comparable to those reported near Earth. The 2 Shocklets had magnetic compression ratios of 1.23 and 1.34 with linear polarization in the spacecraft frame. The 3 SLAMS had ratios between 3.22 and 4.03, two of which with elliptical polarization in the spacecraft frame. Statistical analysis suggests SLAMS coincide with unusually high solar wind Alfvén mach‐number at Venus (12.5, this event). Thus, while we establish Shocklets and SLAMS can form in the stable Venusian foreshock, they may be rarer than at Earth. We estimate a lower limit of their occurrence rate of ≳14%.

5. Imparting Systems Engineering Experience via Interactive Fiction Serious Games

Abstract: Serious games for education are becoming increasing popular. Interactive fiction games are some of the most popular in app stores and are also beginning to be heavily used in education to teach analysis and decision-making. Noting that it is difficult for systems engineers to experience all necessary situations which prepare them for the role of a chief engineer, in this paper, we explore the use of interactive fiction serious games to impart systems engineering experience and to teach systems engineering principles. The results of a cognitive viability, qualitative viability, and replayability analysis of 14 systems engineering serious games developed in the interactive fiction genre are presented. The analysis demonstrates that students with a systems engineering background are able to learn the Twine gaming engine and create a serious game aligned to the Apply level of Bloom’s Taxonomy which conveys a systems engineering experience and teaches a systems engineering principle within a four-week period of time. These quickly generated games cognitive, quality, and replayability scores indicate they provide some opportunity for high-level thinking, are of high quality, and with above average replayability, are likely to be played multiple times and/or recommended to others.

6. Investigation of the Copper Requirements of the Metallophyte Liverworts Cephaloziella nicholsonii Douin and C. massalongoi (Spruce) Müll.Frib

Abstract: Former mine sites can provide habitat for many rare specialised bryophyte species that have adapted to metal-rich soil conditions that are toxic to most other plant species. Some of the bryophyte species found in this habitat are facultative metallophytes, and others are regarded as strict metallophytes, the so-called ‘copper mosses’. It is a general assumption in the literature that Cephaloziella nicholsonii and C. massalongoi, both categorised as Endangered in the IUCN Red List for Europe, are also strict metallophytes and obligate copper bryophytes. This in vitro experiment investigated the growth and gemma production of these two species from different sites in Ireland and Britain on treatment plates of 0 ppm, 3 ppm, 6 ppm, 12 ppm, 24 ppm, 48 ppm and 96 ppm copper. Results show that elevated copper is not an obligate requirement for optimum growth. Differences in response to the copper treatment levels among populations evident within both species could possibly be due to ecotypic variation. A case is also made for the taxonomic revision of the Cephaloziella genus. Implications for the species’ conservation are discussed.

7. Dichloroacetate improves systemic energy balance and feeding behavior during sepsis

Abstract: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by dysregulated host response to an infection. The metabolic aberrations associated with sepsis underly an acute and organism-wide hyperinflammatory response and multiple organ dysfunction; however, crosstalk between systemic metabolomic alterations and metabolic reprogramming at organ levels remains unknown. We analyzed substrate utilization by the respiratory exchange ratio, energy expenditure, metabolomic screening, and transcriptional profiling in a cecal ligation and puncture model to show that sepsis increases circulating free fatty acids and acylcarnitines but decreases levels of amino acids and carbohydrates, leading to a drastic shift in systemic fuel preference. Comparative analysis of previously published metabolomics from septic liver indicated a positive correlation with hepatic and plasma metabolites during sepsis. In particular, glycine deficiency was a common abnormality of the plasma and liver during sepsis. Interrogation of the hepatic transcriptome in septic mice suggested that the septic liver may contribute to systemic glycine deficiency by downregulating genes involved in glycine synthesis. Interestingly, intraperitoneal injection of the pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) inhibitor dichloroacetate reversed sepsis-induced anorexia, energy imbalance, inflammation, dyslipidemia, hypoglycemia, and glycine deficiency. Collectively, our data indicated that PDK inhibition rescued systemic energy imbalance and metabolic dysfunction in sepsis partly through restoration of hepatic fuel metabolism.

8. Systematic Scatterometer Wind Errors Near Coastal Mountains

Abstract: Abstract Satellite scatterometers provide the only regular observations of surface wind vectors over vast swaths of the world oceans, including coastal regions, which are of great scientific and societal interest but still present challenges for remote sensing. Here we demonstrate systematic scatterometer wind errors near Hawaii's Big Island: Two counter‐rotating lee vortices, which are clear in the International Comprehensive Ocean‐Atmosphere Data Set ship‐based wind climatology and in aircraft observations, are absent in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Remote Sensing Systems scatterometer wind climatologies. We demonstrate similar errors in the representation of transient Catalina Eddy events in the Southern California Bight. These errors likely arise from the nonuniqueness of scatterometer wind observations, that is, an “ambiguity removal” is required during processing to select from multiple wind solutions to the geophysical model function. We discuss strategies to improve the ambiguity selection near coastal mountains, where small‐scale wind reversals are common.

9. Sex effects on cortical morphological networks in healthy young adults

Abstract: Understanding sex-related differences across the human cerebral cortex is an important step in elucidating the basis of psychological, behavioural and clinical differences between the sexes. Prior structural neuroimaging studies primarily focused on regional sex differences using univariate analyses. Here we focus on sex differences in cortical morphological networks (CMNs) derived using multivariate modelling of regional cortical measures of volume and surface from high-quality structural MRI scans from healthy participants in the Human Connectome Project (HCP) (n = 1,063) and the Southwest University Longitudinal Imaging Multimodal (SLIM) study (n = 549). The functional relevance of the CMNs was inferred using the NeuroSynth decoding function. Sex differences were widespread but not uniform. In general, females had higher volume, thickness and cortical folding in networks that involve prefrontal (both ventral and dorsal regions including the anterior cingulate) and parietal regions while males had higher volume, thickness and cortical folding in networks that primarily include temporal and posterior cortical regions. CMN loading coefficients were used as input features to linear discriminant analyses that were performed separately in the HCP and SLIM; sex was predicted with a high degree of accuracy (81%–85%) across datasets. The availability of behavioral data in the HCP enabled us to show that male-biased surface-based CMNs were associated with externalizing behaviors. These results extend previous literature on regional sex-differences by identifying CMNs that can reliably predict sex, are relevant to the expression of psychopathology and provide the foundation for the future investigation of their functional significance in clinical populations.

10. Dichloroacetate reverses sepsis-induced hepatic metabolic dysfunction

Abstract: Metabolic reprogramming between resistance and tolerance occurs within the immune system in response to sepsis. While metabolic tissues such as the liver are subjected to damage during sepsis, how their metabolic and energy reprogramming ensures survival is unclear. Employing comprehensive metabolomic, lipidomic, and transcriptional profiling in a mouse model of sepsis, we show that hepatocyte lipid metabolism, mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid (TCA) energetics, and redox balance are significantly reprogrammed after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). We identify increases in TCA cycle metabolites citrate, cis-aconitate, and itaconate with reduced fumarate and triglyceride accumulation in septic hepatocytes. Transcriptomic analysis of liver tissue supports and extends the hepatocyte findings. Strikingly, the administration of the pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) inhibitor dichloroacetate reverses dysregulated hepatocyte metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction. In summary, our data indicate that sepsis promotes hepatic metabolic dysfunction and that targeting the mitochondrial PDC/PDK energy homeostat rebalances transcriptional and metabolic manifestations of sepsis within the liver.

Abstract: The Winds and Currents Mission (WaCM) is a proposed approach to meet the need identified by the NRC Decadal Survey for the simultaneous measurements of ocean vector winds and currents. WaCM features a Ka-band pencil-beam Doppler scatterometer able to map ocean winds and currents globally. We review the principles behind the WaCM measurement and the requirements driving the mission. We then present an overview of the WaCM observatory and tie its capabilities to other OceanObs reviews and measurement approaches.

12. Dancing Butterflies of the East Himalayas

Abstract: The region from eastern Bhutan to Arunachal Pradesh of India and the adjacent south-eastern Tibet and northern Myanmar seems to be one of the last frontiers not only for Meconopsis hunting but also for other botanical exploration. Although there remain political difficulties for foreigners to approach the unsettled border between India and China, including the famous Tsari valley with its prominently rich flora, which was visited by Frank Ludlow, George Sherriff, Frank Kingdon-Ward and a few other plant hunters before 1950, some botanical and horticultural treasures in this region have gradually been revealed to recent travellers. As a result of examining the photographs taken by these travellers and our own botanical field research in eastern Bhutan in 2014, accompanied by subsequent herbarium studies, two species new to science are described. The first, from eastern Bhutan and adjacent Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet, has long been cultivated under the names M. grandis or M. grandis GS600, and has recently been described as M. grandis subsp. orientalis (Grey-Wilson, 2010). It is the national flower of Bhutan. However, the type of M. grandis from Sikkim belongs to a species quite distinct from the eastern populations and the latter is now described as a new species, Meconopsis gakyidiana. The second novelty, Meconopsis merakensis, is newly described from eastern Bhutan and adjacent Arunachal Pradesh. In the past this species was confused with the closely allied M. prainiana. The two species are isolated geographically, M.prainiana being found only much further to the north-east, in south-eastern Tibet, including the Tsari valley. The title of this article is based on a comparison made by Frank Kingdon-Ward of Meconopsis flowers with butterflies in Tibet (see below).

13. Multi-Proxy Approach for Identifying Heinrich Events in Sediment Cores from Hatton Bank (NE Atlantic Ocean)

Abstract: A series of six gravity cores has been used to reconstruct the depositional history of Hatton Bank (Rockall Plateau, NE Atlantic Ocean). The cores have been studied for magnetic susceptibility (MS), geochemical composition, grain size distribution, and a semi-quantitative foraminiferal association. Two main interbedded facies have been described: (i) calcareous ooze; and (ii) lithogenous silt. The study reveals prominent peaks from the MS signal, silt, Mg/Ca, Fe/Ca, Al/Ca, and Rare Earth Elements normalised by Continental Crust (REE/CC), which are sensitive indicators for Heinrich events (H1, H2, H3, H4, and H5) and ash layers. These peaks may relate to alternations in dominance of the calcareous and lithogenic facies. The sediment displays a high percentage of carbonate in interglacial layers but is lithogenic-dominated in glacial stages. The layers with prominent lithic-rich and foraminifera-poor sediments (established as Heinrich layers) may be related to a possible palaeoclimatic effect, where freshwater discharged during iceberg melting may have reduced the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). In the study area, the mean sedimentation rates for the last glacial as ~4.2 cm ka−1 and ~1.4 cm ka−1 for the last ~18 ka (interglacial period) have been estimated. Besides this evidence, Fe/Ca and MS peaks may reflect the presence of basalt, either introduced through ice-rafting or transported and redistributed by bottom currents in the study area. Certain indices, including MS and Fe/Ca, are proposed as good proxies for detecting Heinrich events and ash layers in the Hatton Bank sediments and, in consequence, are parameters that can be used to infer strengthened/weakened NADW formation, according to stadials/interstadials. Moreover, we suggest that the northernmost boundary of the area with evidence of Heinrich events may be situated around 57°38′ N in the Hatton−Rockall area, at least for H4, based on the variation of the Mg/Ca and Fe/Ca curves.

14. 2066 Functional characterization of mutant BRCA1

Abstract: OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: The objective of this work is to determine the mechanistic consequences of BRCA1 mutants in inter-strand crosslink (ICL) repair. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Our lab uses Xenopus egg extracts to study ICL repair. These extracts can be depleted of endogenous BRCA1 by immunoprecipitation. The goal of this work is to rescue endogenous depletion with in vitro translated, wild type BRCA1. Once achieved, we can supplement the depleted extract with BRCA1 mutants to access their function in ICL repair. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We hypothesize that the BRCT and RING domain mutations will abrogate ICL repair, while mutations in the coiled coil region will not affect repair. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: These findings will have an immense impact on the understanding of BRCA1 domains. Importantly these results will spur personalized therapy of BRCA1 mutants by showing which domains are sensitive to cross-linking agents.

Abstract: L-band observations have proven useful for estimating soil moisture and ocean salinity variables to study the land surface and ocean. The European Space Agency (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission was the first (2009-present) spaceborne L-band radiometer. This was followed by two L-band missions flown by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to measure sea surface salinity (Aquarius 2011-2015) and soil moisture (SMAP 2015-present). It is critical to continue the time series of L-band observations that these missions have begun. To address this need we propose a new low-cost instrument concept known as the Global L-band active/passive Observatory for Water cycle Studies (GLOWS) that will include an L-band radiometer and radar to provide data continuity. The new mission concept includes a deployable reflectarray lens antenna with a compact feed that can be flown on an Earth Venture class satellite in a EELV Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) Grande-class mission. GLOWS will continue the science observations of SMAP and SMOS at the same resolution and accuracy at substantially lower cost, size, and weight.

23. The Merging of a Coronal Dimming with the Southern Polar Coronal Hole During Solar Orbiter’s First Perihelion

Abstract: We report a partial filament eruption in the southern solar hemisphere that occurred on 18 March 2022 during the first science perihelion of Solar Orbiter. The filament erupted into a coronal mass ejection (CME), producing coronal dimmings at the footpoints of the erupting structure. The expanding dimming then merged with the adjacent southern polar coronal hole. This merging of two open magnetic structures is observationally rare and poorly understood. We use remote sensing data from multiple co-observing spacecraft to understand the physical processes during this merging event. The evolution of the merger is examined using Extreme-UltraViolet (EUV) images obtained from the instruments onboard the Solar Orbiter and Solar Dynamic Observatory spacecraft. The plasma dynamics are quantified using spectroscopic data obtained from the EUV Imaging Spectrometer onboard Hinode. The preliminary results show that the coronal hole and coronal dimming become indistinguishable from each other after the merging. Several plasma upflow regions were observed throughout the merging event, suggesting the opening of magnetic field lines. The brightening of bright points and coronal jets inside the merged region further imply ongoing reconnection processes. This work also has implications for the formation of coronal hole/open field regions and the origin of solar wind from coronal dimming and coronal hole boundaries.

25. Factors Influencing Medication Errors in the Prehospital Paramedic Environment: A Mixed Method Systematic Review

Abstract: There is limited research available on safe medication management practices in emergency medical services (EMS) practice, with most evidence-based medication safety guidelines based on research in nursing, operating theater and pharmacy settings. Prevention of errors requires recognition of contributing factors across the spectrum from the organizational level to procedural elements and patient characteristics. Evidence is inconsistent regarding the incidence of medication errors and multiple sources also state that errors are under-reported, making the true magnitude of the problem difficult to quantify. Definitions of error also vary, with the specific context of medication errors in prehospital practice yet to be established. The objective of this review is to identify the factors influencing the occurrence of medication errors by EMS personnel in the prehospital environment.The review included both qualitative and quantitative research involving interventions or phenomena related to medication safety or medication error by EMS personnel in the prehospital environment. A search of multiple databases was conducted to identify studies meeting these inclusion criteria. All studies selected were assessed for methodological quality; however, this was not used as a basis for exclusion. Each stage of study selection, appraisal and data extraction was conducted by two independent reviewers, with a third reviewer deciding any unresolved conflicts. The review follows a convergent integrated approach, conducting a single qualitative synthesis of qualitative and "qualitized" quantitative data.Fifty-six articles were included in the review, with case reports and qualitative studies being the most frequent study types. Qualitative analysis revealed seven major themes: organizational factors (with reporting as a sub-theme), equipment/medications, environmental factors, procedure-related factors, communication, patient-related factors (with pediatrics as a sub-theme) and cognitive factors. Both contributing factors and protective factors were identified.The body of evidence regarding medication errors is heterogenous and limited in both quantity and quality. Multiple factors influence medication error occurrence; knowledge of these is necessary to mitigate the risk of errors. Medication error incidence is difficult to quantify due to inconsistent measure, definitions and contexts of research conducted to date. Further research is required to quantify the prevalence of identified factors in specific practice settings.

26. Shallow Deep Learning using Space-filling Curves for Malware Classification

Abstract: The incidents of malware attacks are continually increasing at a rapid rate, thanks to the lucrative potential in schemes such as ransomware, credential stealing Trojans and cryptominers. Their explosive growth is compounded by the ease with which variants can be created from original strains. As a result, anti-virus organisations are struggling to keep up, with some reporting upwards of 14 million samples processed per month. These sheer volumes have caused a shift towards machine learning and artificial intelligence in an effort to alleviate the manual burden of analysis and classification. This research presents a novel framework for the classification of malware into distinct family classes through computer vision and deep learning. In the proposed framework, malware binaries are represented in an abstract form as images mapped through mathematical constructs known as space-filling curves. Convolutional neural networks were constructed and applied to the malware images to build predictive models for classification. The models were optimised using an auto-tuning function for the hyper parameters, which included Bayesian Optimisation, Random search and HyperBand, providing an exhaustive search on the hyper parameters. On a training dataset of 13k malware samples from 23 distinct families, the models yielded an average score of 95% for precision, recall and f1-score. The final deep learning model was validated for robustness against a dataset of more recent variants, comprising 12,816 samples from 16 malware families, returning classification scores of 95%, 86% and 90% for precision, recall and f1-score. The final model was demonstrated to outperform a similar benchmark model considerably. The results show the potential of the deep learning framework as a viable solution to the classification of malware, without the need for manually intensive feature generation or invasive processing techniques.

Abstract: Background The COVID‐19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented threat to global mental health. Children and adolescents may be more susceptible to mental health impacts related to their vulnerable developmental stage, fear of infection, home confinement, suspension of regular school and extracurricular activities, physical distancing mandates, and larger scale threats such as global financial recessions and associated impacts. Our objective was to review existing evidence of the COVID‐19 pandemic’s global impact on the mental health of children and adolescents 3,000 chart reviews. A high prevalence of COVID‐19‐related fear was noted among children and adolescents, as well as more depressive and anxious symptoms compared with prepandemic estimates. Older adolescents, girls, and children and adolescents living with neurodiversities and/or chronic physical conditions were more likely to experience negative mental health outcomes. Many studies reported mental health deterioration among children and adolescents due to COVID‐19 pandemic control measures. Physical exercise, access to entertainment, positive familial relationships, and social support were associated with better mental health outcomes. Conclusions This review highlights the urgent need for practitioners and policymakers to attend to and collaborate with children and adolescents, especially those in higher risk subgroups, to mitigate short‐ and long‐term pandemic‐associated mental health effects.

Abstract: Introduction As registered health professionals, Australian paramedics are required to abide by professional registration standards including the maintenance of continuing professional development (CPD). The broader health literature identifies facilitators, barriers and motivators for engaging in CPD, however the body of knowledge specific to paramedicine is weak. This research seeks to address this gap in the paramedicine body of knowledge. Methods This study adopts a constructivist grounded theory methodology. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and analysed using first and second cycle coding techniques. Paramedics from various state-based Australasian ambulance services and private industry (N=10) discussed their experiences specific to their attitudes, perceptions and engagement about CPD. Results Paramedic CPD goes beyond the traditional approach to mandatory training. Paramedics are motivated by factors such as modality of delivery, professional expectations, clinical/professional improvement and, sometimes, fear. Facilitators included organisational support, improved clinical knowledge, practitioner confidence, self-directed learning opportunities and perceived relevance of content. Barriers include cost, workload/fatigue, location, rostering, lack of incentive to engage, lack of employer support and technological problems. Conclusion By understanding what facilitates or motivates engagement in CPD activities, paramedics can navigate their CPD in conjunction with regulatory requirements. Although paramedics report some similar experiences to other health professionals, there are nuances that appear specific to the discipline of paramedicine. Of interest, a unique finding related to fear influencing paramedic CPD engagement. The results of this study informs paramedic employers and paramedic CPD providers with insights to assist in the development of positive CPD experiences and interactions.

Abstract: Balancing high energy-consuming danger resistance and low energy supply of disease tolerance is a universal survival principle that often fails during sepsis. Our research supports the concept that sepsis phosphorylates and deactivates mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase complex control over the tricarboxylic cycle and the electron transport chain. StimulatIng mitochondrial energetics in septic mice and human sepsis cell models can be achieved by inhibiting pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases with the pyruvate structural analog dichloroacetate. Stimulating the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex by dichloroacetate reverses a disruption in the tricarboxylic cycle that induces itaconate, a key mediator of the disease tolerance pathway. Dichloroacetate treatment increases mitochondrial respiration and ATP synthesis, decreases oxidant stress, overcomes metabolic paralysis, regenerates tissue, organ, and innate and adaptive immune cells, and doubles the survival rate in a murine model of sepsis.

Abstract: Thanks to the advancements in cinema and display technologies wider color gamuts are now possible. These technologies can support and reproduce highly saturated color content. Bear in mind, the ability to produce colors with an extremely high chroma component is strictly a capability of the technology and not a necessity that the image content must follow. In short, the decision to utilize the expanded gamut available in advanced cinema technologies is at the discretion of the creative forces behind the project. There are a number of different factors that can contribute to the creative color decisions made for motion pictures, with the primary factor being the esthetic nature of the content produced. Through creative-preference assessments of saturation adjustments in various image contents, the value of the expanded color gamut in motion picture mastering was assessed. Three images of comparable chroma histograms were utilized in the study to feature human skin tones, animated characters, and natural scenery, respectively. Upon being adjusted, each image was rendered with color content outside the boundaries of the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-P3 gamut. A two-alternative-forced-choice psychophysical study was conducted to estimate observer preference of the saturation levels in each image. From the observers’ selections, the reaction to the expanded image saturation in the three images was plotted and assessed for statistical significance. Through this study, it was found that there is a preference to incorporate colors exclusive to wider color gamuts that extend past the boundaries of International Telecommunication Union-Radiocommunication (ITU-R) Recommendation BT.709 and DCI-P3. It was also confirmed that the medium in which the content was generated influences the level of saturation preferred. Overall, this research provides a look into how technical capability and artistic vision can be connected .

Abstract: Introduction This study explores the career intentions of undergraduate university paramedic students. Other like studies have been completed before paramedicine registration, and this is the first career intentions study to focus on the Queensland perspective. Methods Second year Queensland University of Technology (QUT) undergraduate paramedic students (n=182) were invited to participate. Ethics approval was gained and consent to participate was implied by the completion of a mixed methods questionnaire developed from the extant literature. Data were coded and analysed using Stata 15.1 and NVIVO 12. Results The response rate was 47.3% (n=86). Findings indicated 82.35% of participants intend to pursue paramedic employment after graduating. Queensland Ambulance Service is the preferred choice of employer (78.05%), however 67.07% intended to apply to multiple services for employment, 62.2% are considering private industry employment and 59.76% are contemplating overseas work. Intended paramedicine career length revealed 39.5% of participants plan to work for 20 years or more, 29% for 6–10 years and 18.4% for 11–15 years. Qualitative findings suggest students are concerned about employment opportunities, dislocation from support networks, and feeling unprepared to work in other paramedic jurisdictions. Furthermore, the employer's reputation, culture, internship program and career development opportunities impact on employment decisions. Conclusion The paramedic landscape in Australia appears to be changing. Although the majority of participants intend to work for jurisdictional ambulance services, students are exploring a range of employment opportunities. Understanding the career intentions of undergraduate paramedic students is essential for universities when preparing students for the transition to a globally evolving profession.
