We propose a robust and computationally efficient algorithm to generically construct first return maps of dynamical systems from time series without the need for embedding. Typically, a first return map is constructed using a heuristic convenience (maxima or zero-crossings of the time series, for example) or a computationally delicate geometric approach (explicitly constructing a Poincar\'e section from a hyper-surface normal to the flow and then interpolating to determine intersections with trajectories). Our approach relies on ordinal partitions of the time series and builds the first return map from successive intersections with particular ordinal sequences. Generically, we can obtain distinct first return maps for each ordinal sequence. We define entropy-based measures to guide our selection of the ordinal sequence for a ``good'' first return map and show that this method can robustly be applied to time series from classical chaotic systems to extract the underlying first return map dynamics. The results are shown on several well-known dynamical systems (Lorenz, R{\"o}ssler and Mackey-Glass in chaotic regimes).

Modelling of 3D domain boundaries using information from drill holes is a standard procedure in mineral exploration and mining. Manual logging of drill holes can be difficult to exploit as the results may not be comparable between holes due to the subjective nature of geological logging. Exploration and mining companies commonly collect geochemical or mineralogical data from diamond drill core or drill chips; however, manual interpretation of multivariate data can be slow and challenging; therefore, automation of any of the steps in the interpretation process would be valuable. Hyperspectral analysis of drill chips provides a relatively inexpensive method of collecting very detailed information rapidly and consistently. However, the challenge of such data is the high dimensionality of the data’s variables in comparison to the number of samples. Hyperspectral data is usually processed to produce mineral abundances generally involving a range of assumptions. This paper presents the results of testing a new fast and objective methodology to identify the lithological boundaries from high dimensional hyperspectral data. This method applies a quadrant scan analysis to recurrence plots. The results, applied to nickel laterite deposits from New Caledonia, demonstrate that this method can identify transitions in the downhole data. These are interpreted as reflecting mineralogical changes that can be used as an aid in geological logging to improve boundary detection.

This is a retrospective chart review of 20 patients treated with a consensus-driven treatment algorithm in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children patients across a wide clinical spectrum. Their treatments and clinical status are described as well as their favorable return to functional baseline by 30 days post presentation.

Global travel has made travel-associated infectious diseases (TAIDs) a more frequent consideration in the pediatric emergency department. Studies show that physicians may either omit a travel history or, even with a positive travel history, do not consider potentially serious illnesses, such as dengue and malaria. A thorough travel history including the purpose, location, activities, diet, and exposures can help the emergency clinician develop and narrow the differential diagnosis. This issue reviews the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of various TAIDs, with the goal of early recognition and disease-specific treatment.

Understanding recharge processes is fundamental to improve sustainable groundwater resource management. Shallow groundwater (SGW) is being developed for multiple purposes in Ethiopia without consideration of monitoring. We established a citizen science-based hydro-meteorological monitoring network, with a focus on SGW recharge estimation, in Eshito micro-watershed, Ethiopia. Citizen scientists collected rainfall, groundwater-level and stream water-level data. We characterized the shallow aquifer using pumping tests. The data were used to estimate SGW recharge using three methods: chloride mass balance, water-level fluctuation (WLF) and baseflow separation. Approximately 20% and 35% of annual rainfall amount contributes to recharge based on the chloride mass balance and WLF results, respectively. Baseflow separation showed recharge values for the watershed vary from 38% to 28% of annual rainfall at the upstream and downstream gauging stations, respectively. This study shows that the recharge in previously unmonitored micro-watersheds can be studied if citizens are involved in data generation.

Citizen science is proliferating in the water sciences with increasing public involvement in monitoring water resources, climate variables, water quality, and in mapping and modeling exercises. In addition to the well-reported scientific benefits of such projects, in particular solving data scarcity issues, it is common to extol the benefits for participants, for example, increased knowledge and empowerment. We reviewed 549 publications concerning citizen science applications in the water sciences to examine personal benefits and motivations, and wider community benefits. The potential benefits of involvement were often simply listed without explanation or investigation. Studies that investigated whether or not participants and communities actually benefitted from involvement, or experienced negative impacts, were uncommon, especially in the Global South. Assuming certain benefits will be experienced can be fallacious as in some cases the intended benefits were either not achieved or in fact had negative impacts. Identified benefits are described and we reveal that more consideration should be given to how these benefits interrelate and how they build community capitals to foster their realization in citizen science water projects. Additionally, we describe identified negative impacts showing they were seldom considered though they may not be uncommon and should be borne in mind when implementing citizen science. Given the time and effort commitment made by citizen scientists for the benefit of research, there is a need for further study of participants and communities involved in citizen science applications to water, particularly in low-income regions, to ensure both researchers and communities are benefitting. BackgroundHydroxychloroquine has not been associated with improved survival among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the majority of observational studies and similarly was not identified as an effective prophylaxis following exposure in a prospective randomized trial. We aimed to explore the role of hydroxychloroquine therapy in mildly symptomatic patients diagnosed in the outpatient setting.MethodsWe examined the association between outpatient hydroxychloroquine exposure and the subsequent progression of disease among mildly symptomatic non-hospitalized patients with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection. The primary outcome assessed was requirement of hospitalization. Data was obtained from a retrospective review of electronic health records within a New Jersey USA multi-hospital network. We compared outcomes in patients who received hydroxychloroquine with those who did not applying a multivariable logistic model with propensity matching.ResultsAmong 1274 outpatients with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection 7.6% were prescribed hydroxychloroquine. In a 1067 patient propensity matched cohort, 21.6% with outpatient exposure to hydroxychloroquine were hospitalized, and 31.4% without exposure were hospitalized. In the primary multivariable logistic regression analysis with propensity matching there was an association between exposure to hydroxychloroquine and a decreased rate of hospitalization from COVID-19 (OR 0.53; 95% CI, 0.29, 0.95). Sensitivity analyses revealed similar associations. QTc prolongation events occurred in 2% of patients prescribed hydroxychloroquine with no reported arrhythmia events among those with data available.ConclusionsIn this retrospective observational study of SARS-CoV-2 infected non-hospitalized patients hydroxychloroquine exposure was associated with a decreased rate of subsequent hospitalization. Additional exploration of hydroxychloroquine in this mildly symptomatic outpatient population is warranted.Lay SummaryIn this observational study of 1,274 COVID-19 patients, hydroxychloroquine given as an outpatient treatment was associated with a 47% reduction in the hazard of hospitalization. Adverse events were not increased (2% QTc prolongation events, 0% arrhythmias). Further validation is required. Use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 in the outpatient setting should be reserved for a clinical trial or after discussion with a physician regarding risks and benefits.

An informal survey of 65 pediatric emergency department leaders in North America-from 30 U.S. states and 4 Canadian provinces-revealed changes in operations, infrastructure, staffing, and clinical care that were undertaken as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes identified by the survey respondents were driven by reductions in pediatric patient volumes, a surge of adult patients, clinical considerations related to containment of infection, and financial factors. Survey respondents also reported effects of the pandemic on academic training programs and provider wellness. This report uses the survey responses to provide a snapshot of the adaptability of pediatric emergency medicine departments and clinicians during a public health emergency.

Background The target capture protein MuB is responsible for the high efficiency of phage Mu transposition within the E. coli genome. However, some targets are off-limits, such as regions immediately outside the Mu ends (cis-immunity) as well as the entire ~37 kb genome of Mu (Mu genome immunity). Paradoxically, MuB is responsible for cis-immunity and is also implicated in Mu genome immunity, but via different mechanisms. This study was undertaken to dissect the role of MuB in target choice in vivo.Results We tracked Mu transposition from six different starting locations on the E. coli genome, in the presence and absence of MuB. The data reveal that Mu’s ability to sample the entire genome during a single hop in a clonal population is independent of MuB, and that MuB is responsible for cis-immunity, plays a minor role in Mu genome immunity, and facilitates insertions into transcriptionally active regions. Unexpectedly, transposition patterns in the absence of MuB have helped extend the boundaries of the insular Ter segment of the E. coli genome.Conclusions The results in this study demonstrate unambiguously the operation of two distinct mechanisms of Mu target immunity, only one of which is wholly dependent on MuB. The study also reveals several interesting and hitherto unknown aspects of Mu target choice in vivo, particularly the role of MuB in facilitating the capture of promoter and translation start site targets, likely by displacing macromolecular complexes engaged in gene expression. So also, MuB facilitates transposition into the restricted Ter region of the genome.

Although there is still much that is not understood, experience with previous coronavirus outbreaks and available data on COVID-19 indicate a reduced propensity to affect children. Nonetheless, serious complications—although rare—are being seen in pediatric patients. This review, written with the emergency medicine clinician in mind, describes the epidemiology, clinical features, and management implications for COVID-19 in pediatric patients. It includes a discussion of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19, as well as other aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic that are affecting children and families, such as poisonings, childhood immunizations, mental health, nonaccidental trauma, and neglect.

Group living is the behavioural response that results when individuals assess the costs vs benefits of sociality, and these trade-offs vary across an animal’s life. Here we quantitatively assess how periparturient condition (mother/non-mother) and births affect the dynamics of social interactions of a gregarious ungulate, and how such can help to explain evolutionary hypotheses of the mother-offspring bond. To achieve this we used data of the individual movement of a group of Scottish blackface sheep (Ovis aries) marked with GPS collars and properties of mathematical graphs (networks). Euclidean pair-wise distance between sheep were threshold at different percentiles to determine network links, and these thresholds have a profound effect on the connectivity of the resulting network. Births increased the average pair-wise distance between mothers, and between mothers and non-mothers, with less effect on the distance between non-mothers. Mothers occupied peripheral positions within the flock, more evident following births. Associations between individuals (i.e. network community change) were highly dynamic, though mothers were less likely to change community than non-mothers, especially after births. Births hampered individual communication within the flock (assessed via network closeness centrality), especially in mothers. Overall leadership (lead positioning relative to flock movement) was not associated to reproductive condition, and individual leadership rank was not affected by births. A ten minute GPS acquisition time was adequate to capture complex social dynamics in sheep movement. The results on mother’s isolation behaviour support the hypotheses of selection for maternal imprint facilitation, reducing risks to nursing alien offspring, and group/multilevel selection on group formation.

The hydrological impact of many expensive investments on watershed interventions remains unquantified due to lack of time series data. In this study, remote sensing imagery is utilized to quantify and detect vegetation cover change in Magera micro-watershed, Ethiopia, where sustainable land management interventions have been implemented. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values were retrieved for the period 2010 to 2019, which encompasses before, during and after the interventions. Mann-Kendal trend test was used to detect temporal trends in the monthly NDVI values. In addition, multiple change-point analyses were carried out using Pettitt’s, Buishand’s and Standard Normal Homogeneity (SNH) tests to detect any abrupt changes due to the watershed interventions. The possible influence of rainfall on changes in vegetation cover was investigated. A significant increasing trend (from 1.5% to 33%) was detected for dense vegetation at the expense of a significant reduction in bare land from 40.9% to 0.6% over the analysis period. An abrupt change in vegetation cover was detected in 2015 in response to the interventions. A weak and decreasing correlation was obtained between monthly rainfall magnitude and NDVI values, which indicates that the increase in vegetation cover is not from rainfall influences. The study shows that the sustainable land management has an overall positive impact on the study area. The findings of this research support the applicability of remote sensing approaches to provide useful information on the impacts of watershed intervention investments.

This work outlines a pipeline for time series analysis that incorporates a measure of similarity not previously applied between homological summaries. Specifically, the well-established, but disparate, methods of persistent homology and TrAnsformation Cost Time Series (TACTS) are combined to provide a metric for tracking dynamics via changing homological features. TACTS allows subtle changes in dynamics to be accounted for, gives a quantitative output that can be directly interpreted, and is tunable to provide several complementary perspectives simultaneously. Our method is demonstrated first with known dynamical systems and then with a real-world electrocardiogram dataset. This paper highlights inadequacies in existing persistent homology metrics and describes circumstances where TACTS can be more sensitive and better suited to detecting a variety of regime changes.

The engagement of communities (non-scientists) in the collection of reliable hydrometeorological data (a citizen science approach) has the potential to address part of the data gaps in Ethiopia. Due to the high cost of establishing and maintaining gauging stations, hydrometeorological monitoring in the country tends to focus on large river basins (> 1,000 km2) with little or no consideration of small watersheds (< 100 km2). However, hydrologic data from small watersheds are critical for two main reasons: (i) measure the impacts of watershed management interventions on water resources; and (ii) inform local development plans, such as small- and micro-scale irrigation development. Therefore, this paper examines the institutional arrangements for hydrometeorological monitoring and the practices followed by the Basin Development Authority and National Meteorology Agency in Ethiopia. It is important to investigate the possibilities of embedding a citizen science approach into the data collection systems of these two organizations, as this will help to address data gaps, particularly at micro-watershed levels. Based on the assessments, there is potential to embed the approach into the institutional structure of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) for hydrometeorological monitoring in micro-watersheds, due to the following reasons: (i) MoA has a high demand for hydrometeorological data from small rivers to be used for small- and micro-scale irrigation development, and for measuring the impacts of watershed development interventions on water resources; and (ii) MoA has an institutional structure from federal to community level that supports the engagement of communities in development interventions. However, effectively embedding the citizen science approach into regular monitoring of MoA depends on the clear distribution of mandates; developing legal, ethical, methodological and quality frameworks; and developing clear data sharing and incentive mechanisms involving all partners.

Volcanic aquifers are sources of groundwater for both urban and rural areas. Their occurrence in geological formations and water quality are the main issues for sustainable utilisation. Dangila town and its surrounding area, northwest Ethiopia, is assessed for hydrogeological framework and groundwater quality based on well and hydrochemical data. The study showed that the area has a multi-aquifer system: an unconfined perched aquifer at shallow depth and; semi-confined and confined aquifers at greater depth in Quaternary basalts. The aquifer has five groundwater facies: Ca-HCO3, Ca-Mg-HCO3, Ca-Na-HCO3, Na- Ca-HCO3 and Na-HCO3. The Ca-HCO3 groundwater types are dominant in the shallow unconfined aquifer system, and the Na- Ca-HCO3 and Na-HCO3 types are dominant in deep aquifer systems. Mixing of waters from shallow and deep aquifer systems is minimal and possible only through interconnected fractures. Groundwater storage and flow is controlled by intensity and interconnection of fractures. Hydraulic conductivity is higher for fracture dominant aquifers than weathered rock aquifers. The groundwater chemistry is mainly controlled by rock weathering and cation exchange. Groundwater quality assessment shows that water from both aquifer sources is potable. Based on sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) values, all groundwater schemes are in the excellent quality class and can be used for irrigation without any problem. However, high Na+ in borehole samples restrict the deep groundwater suitability for irrigation use without adjustment. The combined results of the study are used to construct a hydrogeological conceptual model of volcanic aquifers, which can be used to manage the groundwater resource for sustainable development. This study would be helpful for water resources management in other similar geological settings.

We present an evidence-based approach to identify how best to support development of groundwater for small-scale irrigation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We argue that it is important to focus this effort on shallow groundwater resources. We demonstrate and test this proposal at a case study site: Dangila woreda in the north-western highlands of Ethiopia. This site was selected to allow exploration of a shallow weathered volcanic regolith type aquifer formation which is found to the South of Lake Tana and also exists more extensively across Ethiopia. We believe lessons from this case study are transferable and there is a case for arguing that shallow groundwater represents a neglected opportunity for promoting sustainable small-scale irrigated agriculture in SSA. In comparison with other global regions, the groundwater resources of SSA are among the least understood; borehole records and hydrogeological studies are lacking. Assessments of groundwater resources do exist, but they rely on remotely sensed data combined with modelling at national or regional scale, and they focus on deeper aquifers. There is a need for these broad evaluations to be supplemented by localised and detailed assessments. The case study here presents such an assessment in order to support analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with developing small-scale irrigation utilising shallow groundwater. A multimethod groundwater recharge assessment was conducted utilising formal and community-based monitoring, field investigation and existing published data. Water table recovery tests at existing hand dug wells confirm that well yields of 1 l/s are achievable at the end of the wet season when water would be available to support an additional irrigated crop. Hydraulic conductivity estimates ranged from 0.2 to 6.4 m/d in the dry season and from 2.8 to 22.3 m/day in the wet season. Specific yield estimations have a wider range though the mean value of 0.09 is as would be expected. Records of groundwater levels and rainfall monitored by the local community for the period April 2014 to April 2018 show that all the wells maintained useable water levels beyond the end of the rainy season. An assessment of the hydrology of the Kilti catchment provided insights into groundwater availability within the wider area. The catchment receives about 1600 mm/year of rainfall, of which about 350 mm/year enters the groundwater as recharge, discharging to the river as baseflow with a similar amount of rapid runoff contributing to a total river flow of about 400 mm/year. The lowest value of baseflow is 82% of the mean baseflow, which suggests a degree of buffering and indicates that groundwater is available even in a very dry year. We conclude that arguments previously put forward against the promotion of shallow groundwater use for agriculture in SSA appear exaggerated. Our analysis challenges the view that shallow aquifers are unproductive and that irrigation will have unacceptable impacts on wetlands and other groundwater-dependent ecosystems. We believe lessons from this case study are transferable, and there is a case for arguing that shallow groundwater represents a neglected opportunity for promoting sustainable small-scale irrigated agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. It appears that factors other than the physical availability of groundwater control the ‘triggering’ of development. Interventions to promote development of groundwater resources should recognise the importance of shallow aquifers.

Transition detection in temporal and nontemporal signals is a problem encountered in various disciplines. We investigate the quadrant scan technique to analyze recurrence plots to identify tipping points of a dynamical system. We define two types of transition, state-transition and dynamic-transition, and prove analytically the ability of quadrant scans to detect both types. We then provide an extension by considering a weighting scheme to overcome limitations of the standard scheme. We further highlight the merits of the quadrant scan and our extension by studying several applications. The ability of the quadrant scan and its extension to deal with nontemporal, multivariate, or large data sets as well as their capability to classify multiscale transitions are demonstrated in detail through several examples and settings.

We investigate the capacity of reservoir computers to reconstruct the dynamics of a network of chaotic oscillators via the observation of its multivariate time series. The reservoir is itself a structured echo-state network which receives the current observations as inputs, and is trained to produce the next observations as outputs. We study the performance of this scheme and its dependence on the separation of the inputs, modularity of the reservoir network, and observability of the system. We observe optimal performance with a segregated input structure and extremely modular network.

The first step in nonlinear time-series analysis can be selecting a delay for reconstruction. The most popular choices of this delay are the first zero of the autocovariance and the first minimum of the mutual information. An advantage of the first method arises from the robustness to noise of the autocovariance function, while an advantage of the second is that the first minimum of the mutual information provides a useful choice of delay for a wide range of nonlinear systems. We propose a method to choose a delay for frequently sampled flowlike data based on a mean local autocovariance function and compare its performance to methods based on the autocovariance and the mutual information. In addition, we compare the novel method to an established method based on cross-validatory mean-square errors of predictors corresponding to different choices of delay. The mean local autocovariance combines the versatility of the mutual information with some of the robustness to noise of the autocovariance.

Summary The three-dimensional structures of chromosomes are increasingly being recognized as playing a major role in cellular regulatory states. The efficiency and promiscuity of phage Mu transposition was exploited to directly measure in vivo interactions between genomic loci in E. coli. Two global organizing principles have emerged: first, the chromosome is well-mixed and uncompartmentalized, with transpositions occurring freely between all measured loci; second, several gene families/regions show “clustering”: strong three-dimensional co-localization regardless of linear genomic distance. The activities of the SMC/condensin protein MukB and nucleoid-compacting protein subunit HU-α are essential for the well-mixed state; HU-α is also needed for clustering of 6/7 ribosomal RNA-encoding loci. The data are explained by a model in which the chromosomal structure is driven by dynamic competition between DNA replication and chromosomal relaxation, providing a foundation for determining how region-specific properties contribute to both chromosomal structure and gene regulation.

How should academic staff engage in outreach with communities outside of the university? The need of academics to answer this question has intensified in the UK given the changing priorities of academic job roles, shaped by increasing institutional concern for widening participation, graduate employability and research impact in an era of austerity and high tuition fees. While university outreach professionals, such as those in widening participation, have access to a range of networks, resources and support mechanisms for outreach activity, academics often face a series of profession-specific pressures that make engagement in outreach complex and contingent. This article draws upon the experience of 25 academics from 18 different subject areas and 18 institutions to examine and provide responses to key challenges faced by academics involved in outreach in the UK. We examine such issues as: the conceptualisation of outreach; funding; recognition and management of workload; nurturing relationships with internal and external partners; capacity-building; commercial interests, payment and responsibility; pedagogical style and content; integration of outreach into curricula, and evaluation of programmes. The examination offered is not all encompassing, but acts as a series of reference points to consider the challenges faced by UK academics in an evolving outreach sector.

Student engagement (SE) is currently a significant focus of attention in Higher Education (HE), but its underlying political character and the broader political-economic context have been overlooked. SE has not been considered from the perspective of the ‘Idea’ of the university. Bringing together the literature on SE, the marketisation of HE and the ‘Idea’ of the university, we argue that current policies and practices are based on a one-dimensional conception, which neglects the crucial elements of cognitive and emotional engagement, and that this both reflects and reinforces an economic utilitarian conception of the university and a consumer model of student identity.

A framework for the multiscale characterization of the coupled evolution of the solid grain fabric and its associated pore space in dense granular media is developed. In this framework, a pseudo-dual graph transformation of the grain contact network produces a graph of pores which can be readily interpreted as a pore space network. Survivability, a new metric succinctly summarizing the connectivity of the solid grain and pore space networks, measures material robustness. The size distribution and the connectivity of pores can be characterized quantitatively through various network properties. Assortativity characterizes the pore space with respect to the parity of the number of particles enclosing the pore. Multiscale clusters of odd parity versus even parity contact cycles alternate spatially along the shear band: these represent, respectively, local jamming and unjamming regions that continually switch positions in time throughout the failure regime. Optimal paths, established using network shortest paths in favor of large pores, provide clues on preferential paths for interstitial matter transport. In systems with higher rolling resistance at contacts, less tortuous shortest paths thread through larger pores in shear bands. Notably the structural patterns uncovered in the pore space suggest that more robust models of interstitial pore flow through deforming granular systems require a proper consideration of the evolution of in situ shear band and fracture patterns – not just globally, but also inside these localized failure zones.

The coherent interaction of Rydberg helium atoms with microwave fields in a $\lambda/4$ superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator has been exploited to probe the spectral characteristics of an individual resonator mode. This was achieved by preparing the atoms in the 1s55s$^3$S$_1$ Rydberg level by resonance enhanced two-color two-photon excitation from the metastable 1s2s$^3$S$_1$ level. The atoms then travelled over the resonator in which the third harmonic microwave field, at a frequency of $\omega_{\mathrm{res}}=2\pi\times19.556$ GHz, drove the two-photon 1s55s$^3$S$_1\rightarrow$1s56s$^3$S$_1$ transition. By injecting a sequence of Ramsey pulses into the resonator, and monitoring the coherent evolution of the Rydberg state population by state-selective pulsed electric field ionization as the frequency of the microwave field was tuned, spectra were recorded that allowed the resonator resonance frequency and quality factor to be determined with the atoms acting as microscopic quantum sensors., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The groundwater of volcanic aquifers, dissected by various structures and affected by several volcanic eruption events, varies in quality. A large number of rural people depend on shallow aquifers tapped by shallow hand wells and springs. On the other hand, the urban population is dependant on deep aquifers using drilled boreholes. The location of springs, shallow hand-dug wells and boreholes inside or close to farmlands, and the advancement of irrigation water use from groundwater by the government entail the assessment of groundwater quality. Therefore, the focus of the present study is to determine the quality and suitability of groundwater around Dangila Town, Northwest Ethiopia, for drinking and irrigation uses. The water quality assessment was conducted by collecting groundwater samples from 14 shallow hand-dug wells, 4 springs, and 7 deep boreholes then analysing for different physical and chemical parameters. A total of 25 selected groundwater samples from shallow and deep aquifers were analysed in a laboratory for physical and chemical parameters. The physical parameters measured both in the field and the laboratory included pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS). The chemical parameters analysed in the laboratory comprised cations of calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn2+) and anions of bicarbonate (HCO3-), sulfate (SO42-), carbonate (CO32-), chlorine (Cl-), nitrate (NO3-), fluoride (F-), and boron (B). Based on the laboratory results, the variation in groundwater facies, and major cation and anion sources were determined. Furthermore, the groundwater quality for human consumption was assessed and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), Na%, and the residual sodium carbonate (RSC) values, which are crucial to determine the overall groundwater quality for irrigational uses, were calculated. Detailed interpretations of the data have been presented in the paper entitled “Hydrogeological framework of the volcanic aquifers and groundwater quality in Dangila Town and the surrounding area, Northwest Ethiopia” [1]. The presented dataset demonstrates the necessity of water quality assessments that would be helpful to water sectors, government, and policymakers for sustainable groundwater management.
