The opioid misuse epidemic is a serious public health crisis. Opioid-involved deaths continue to rise and the potency of illicitly manufactured synthetic opioids has increased, creating challenges for the healthcare system to provide multifaceted specialized care. Elements of the regulation around buprenorphine, 1 of 3 drugs approved to treat opioid use disorder (OUD), constrain treatment options for patients and providers alike. Updates to this regulatory framework, particularly around dosing and access to care, would enable providers to better treat the changing landscape of opioid misuse. Specific actions to this end are to: (1) Increase buprenorphine dosing flexibility based on FDA labeling which drives payor policies; (2) Restrict local government and institutional impositions of arbitrary access and dosing limits for buprenorphine; and (3) Liberalize buprenorphine initiation and maintenance via telemedicine for OUD.

Apart from the many social and health problems it has caused, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on most sectors of the economy worldwide. One of the areas where such impact is noticeable is the textile, apparel, and fashion (TAF) industry. The lockdowns and limited access to retailer outlets resulted in a considerable drop in consumption, creating problems related to the excess of stock, the decrease of sales, and the disposal of non-used items. This paper outlines the implications of the COVID-19 on the TAF sectors and European retailers. It analyzes how the current supply chains exacerbated stock control problems, and it reports on the changes in consumption during the pandemic. The worldwide restrictive measures implemented to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic were responsible for significant profit losses. Also, the decrease in consumption, caused by several geographically wide lockdowns, prompted a subsequent reduction in orders and sales, resulting in a significant number of constraints. The implementation of more environmentally friendly processes, including sustainable circularity as a competitiveness source to keep the TAF sectors in the loop and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, may help address the problems associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in the sustainability context, as reported in this paper.

Introduction. Zoster is caused by the reactivation of a dormant viral infection, and is characterized by painful, vesicular lesions along a dermatome. Neuritic pain associated with zoster can be treated with anticonvulsant medications. Case Report. An immunocompetent adult physician developed prominent zoster lesions in the trigeminal nerve distribution. Treatment included antiviral therapy for the acute infection, and pharmacotherapy for neuritic pain. Pharmacotherapy included several anticonvulsant agents, with labial angioedema developing after initiation of oxcarbazepine. Discussion. The case is notable for the pictorial timeline of lesion development, as well as the marked incident angioedema following initiation of treatment for neuritis with oxcarbazepine. Conclusions. Clinicians should remain vigilant for drug-induced facial angioedema when treating patients with trigeminal zoster-related neuritis due to the potential for angioedema to aggravate a lesion, resulting in scarring. Angioedema of the head and neck should be closely monitored due to the potential for airway compromise.

In 2014, then-Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper passed the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act into law, which gave Canadian courts and Review Boards new powers to protect the public from particularly dangerous mentally ill offenders. The most controversial change to the law included the designation of the High-Risk Accused. Once designated by the courts as a High-Risk Accused, that individual is barred from leaving a forensic hospital except for urgent medical reasons. In this article, the authors assess the impact of the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act on the forensic mental health system in Alberta, Canada. The findings indicate that the legislation did not lead to any meaningful changes in the Alberta forensic mental health system in terms of absolute discharges and incoming persons found not criminally responsible.

My thesis focuses on the development, characterization, and application of a new method for doping semiconducting polymer films. Semiconducting polymers represent a versatile class of materials used in many electronic device applications. However, due to their low intrinsic conductivity, doping is often necessary to achieve the desired electrical properties for specific applications. Adding large amounts of dopant often leads to detrimental effects that hinder both film quality and electrical properties. I developed new methodologies to overcome these specific issues present in the high doping regime as well as new insights gained general to molecular doping of polymers afforded by these methods. The first chapter gives a brief history of doping of semiconducting polymers, including characterization methods and challenges. The second chapter introduces the new method, sequential doping, specifically designed to overcome one such challenge and its comparison to a more traditional doped-film fabrication method. We demonstrate that this new method produces highly doped films of superior film quality allowing for accurate optical and electrical measurements, including Hall effect measurements, which had previously been unrealized. Chapter three focuses on how sequential doping offers the unique advantage of being able to tune the polymer film morphology prior to doping and maintain that same morphology after doping allowing for a detailed study of how polymer crystallinity effects the optical and electrical properties of the doped state. Of particular note was the discovery that for the specific polymer:dopant system studied, the dopant resides in the side chain regions between polymer chains as opposed to in the π-stacks as previously claimed. The final chapter continues to use the advantages offered by sequential doping to study the interplay between polymer crystallinity and energy level offset between the polymer and the dopant by the use of statistical copolymers with independently tuned crystallinity and energy levels. It was found that the crystallinity of the polymer after being doped could vary depending on the structural composition of the undoped polymer, and that the doped state crystallinity had a more drastic effect on the resulting electrical properties than the energy level offset. Overall, sequential doping is an effective way to produce highly doped semiconducting polymer films and allows for novel studies on how physical properties of materials influence their doped counterparts.

Purpose A sponsorship performance cycle of business-to-business (B2B) exchange is conceptualized, where distinct types of resources are invested by sponsoring firms into sponsored properties and the competitive success of those properties enhances returns to sponsors. While the latter return channel in this cycle is well-documented, the former investment channel has remained opaque. Recognizing this empirical missing link, this paper aims to illuminate the investment channel through a longitudinal analysis. Design/methodology/approach Based on 50 years of Formula One (F1) team and sponsor alliances, this study models the effects of three different sponsorship categories on team performance in the annual F1 constructors’ championship. Findings The results demonstrate that each incremental sponsor offering performance-based resources is associated with four additional team points in the championship, controlling for factors such as past success and team experience. Conversely, sponsors offering access to financial or operational resources have no competitive impact. This performance-based sponsor effect is illustrated in models of the current and following seasons. Research limitations/implications In combination with related literature, this study substantiates a complete sponsorship performance cycle in the motorsports context. Practical implications The findings contribute an empirically-based strategy for sustainable sponsorship support that emphasizes acquisition of performance resources in the business-to-business exchange over operational or strictly financial alternatives. Originality/value While scholars have discerned that sponsors invest heterogeneous resources into sponsored properties, and the competitive success of those properties can enhance returns to sponsors, this study demonstrates that particular resources invested by sponsors are related to the property’s competitive success.

Emotion impacts fans' information processing and evaluation of sport sponsors. This paper examines the emotion of schadenfreude (joy at others' misfortune) within rivalry contests under a cognition-emotion theoretical framework. Study 1 assesses the relationships between appraisals of 11 rivalry antecedents and schadenfreude using survey data from 5,459 fans across six sport leagues. Results show that unfairness and cultural difference have the strongest association with schadenfreude. Study 2 utilizes an experimental design involving 543 fans of professional teams in four US-based rivalries. Findings show positive effects of schadenfreude on fans' reactions to the sponsor, mediated by perceived sincerity of the sponsoring brand. Specifically, emotionally-engaged fans (based on heightened schadenfreude) see sponsor support as more sincere, which enhances fan interest, favorability, and intended consumption of the brand. Implications for sponsors include recognizing how activation tactics in affiliation with rivalry games may circumvent the drawbacks of sponsoring just one side of a rivalry.

This article details how a subset of women can perceive of prison as temporary refuge from the hardships and marginalization they face on the outside. It focuses particularly on a group of 88 women incarcerated in western Canada. A large percentage of these women accentuated several reasons why they saw being incarcerated as a desirable alternative to their marginalized situation in their respective communities. These findings nuance our understanding of the place of prison in the lives of these women and draws attention to notable gaps in Canada’s often-celebrated social welfare system.

With increases in sponsorship expenditures outpacing traditional advertising, return on investment warrants greater scrutiny. Research overwhelmingly focuses on returns, however, while neglecting the associated investment. This study contributes to the literature on sponsorship costs by analyzing multiple years of prices paid for sponsorships of Formula One racing teams. Contrary to past research, when sponsor industry and sponsorship level were controlled for, prices were not influenced significantly by congruence, clutter, sponsoring company size, or performance of the sponsored organization. Results indicate that the sponsoring company9s brand equity and shared nationality with the sponsored team predicted price premiums, suggesting agency conflicts among advertisers.

Sport management researchers have increasingly noted a relationship between sport spectatorship and well-being, with the line of inquiry predicated on transformative sport service research. In this study, the authors contribute to transformative sport service research by utilizing multilevel egocentric network analysis to examine the consumption networks of National Football League fans over the course of one season. The authors utilized a network theory approach to explore how emotional support is created and embedded within sport fans’ networks of interpersonal ties and social relationships. Through multilevel modeling, the authors highlighted how attributes of both the ego (i.e., focal actor) and alter (i.e., individual with whom ego shares a tie) affect emotional support. Previous studies of transformative sport service research and the link between well-being outcomes and sport spectatorship have implicitly examined only ego-level attributes (i.e., team identification), yet the present work suggests that emotional support depends on the interpersonal ties and network structures within which sport fans are embedded.

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic ratios are increasingly used in sediment fingerprinting studies. However, questions remain regarding tracer conservativeness during sediment transport and other error considerations. We investigate conservativeness processes, including carbon oxidation and nitrogen mineralization, using experiments. We also test how other considerations impact the isotopic ratios including algae accrual into temporary sediment deposits in the river, the physical loss of organic matter via disaggregation, concentration dependent mixing, and time-varying isotopic ratios of sediment sources. Results show all processes and considerations can change isotope abundance, however, significance varied. Carbon oxidation, nitrogen mineralization and upland seasonality of sediment sources did not significantly change isotopic ratios. Algae accrual, concentration dependency mixing, physical loss of organic matter during transport, and seasonality of the in-stream sediment source significantly changed the isotopic ratios for the conditions tested. Fertilization significantly impacted the stable carbon isotopic ratio in one case considered. Results from sediment fingerprinting simulations and testing how well the virtual mixture fits the mass balance equation agreed with significance results for tracer changes, and some uncertainty considerations changed fractional contribution of sources by as much as 50%. A noteworthy recommendation is the mean isotopic ratios of sediment sources should be separated by at least 1‰ to lessen tracer conservativeness concerns in fingerprinting simulation. We recommend concentration dependent mixing becomes the accepted practice when using isotopic ratios, however, we warn against using particle size corrections. We recommend the loss of organic matter during disaggregation be accounted for in fingerprinting estimates. We recommend algae accrual in in-stream sediment deposits should either be accounted for or in-stream sediment should be treated as a time-varying source in sediment fingerprinting simulations. Finally, we recommend both the carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratio should be tested as potential tracers because the two tracers performed similarly when testing how well the virtual mixture fits the mass balance equations.

For more than 50 years, transcutaneous electrical stimulation method has been used to cure the spinal cord injury, stroke or cerebral palsy. This method works by activating the excitable nerves, muscle fibers by electrical current stimulation through electrode to skin interface. Electrode to skin interface requires equivalent circuit to overcome the inability of measuring the skin resistivity directly. We have learned several previous models, which are from Lawler, Moineau and Keller and Kuhn. Unfortunately, Moineau model neglects the capacitance effect, while Lawler and Keller and Kuhn include capacitive and resistive nature of skin in their equivalent circuits. Both models consisted of only one parallel RC block. Therefore, this paper presents the simulation results of the proposed equivalent circuit model using two parallel RC circuits. Simulation of the proposed model is conducted in MATLAB 2015a and compared with two previous models using certain parameters. Results show that the proposed model obtained the impedance of 10.830 kΩ when it is simulated using 100Hz frequency, for Lawler model the impedance is 5.340 kΩ and Keller and Kuhn model the impedance obtained is 6.490 kΩ. The proposed model has the refined impedance compared with other models and is expected to deliver better electrical stimulation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how reference to a rival or favorite sports team within cause-related sports marketing (CRSM) campaigns affects fans’ intentions to support the cause. The purpose of the studies is to assess the perils of featuring a specific team in league-wide activations of cause-related marketing. Design/methodology/approach The research comprises three experiments. Study 1 employs CRSM advertising to test fans’ responses when rival or hometown team imagery is featured by Major League Baseball (MLB). Studies 2 and 3 utilize a press release to activate a cause partnership in MLB and the National Basketball Association (NBA) and assess the potential influence of team involvement and schadenfreude toward the rival team. Findings Contrary to previous research, results demonstrate that rival team presence in league-wide activation can reduce intentions to support the cause effort across both leagues, but not in all circumstances. The influence of rival team exposure on perceived sincerity is moderated by team involvement with the cause in MLB, but not the NBA. However, sincerity consistently enhances cause support across all studies. While conditional effects of schadenfreude are noted, it is not a significant moderator of cause support. Research limitations/implications This research exposes the nuance of league-wide CRSM activations. Specifically, the rival team effect on perceived sincerity seems to be league dependent, and subject to team involvement with the cause. Moreover, these results are limited to the leagues studied. Practical implications League administrators and their cause-related partners should exercise due diligence when promoting their affiliation using specific teams and levels of involvement with the cause. Originality/value These studies produce results that differ from the limited prior research within the domain of league-wide CRSM, and therefore advance the conversation regarding how best to activate such campaigns.

This chapter is concerned with the use of wearable devices for disabled and extreme sports. These sporting disciplines offer unique challenges for sports scientists and engineers. Disabled athletes often rely on and utilize more specialist equipment than able-bodied athletes. Wearable devices could be particularly useful for monitoring athlete-equipment interactions in disability sport, with a view to improving comfort and performance, while increasing accessibility and reducing injury risks. Equipment also tends to be key for so called “extreme” sports, such as skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, bicycle motocross, rock climbing, surfing, and white-water kayaking. These sports are often practiced outdoors in remote and challenging environments, with athletes placing heavy demands on themselves and their equipment. Extreme sports also encompass disability sports, like sit skiing and adaptive mountain biking, and the popularity and diversity of such activities is likely to increase with improvements in technology and training, as well as with the support of organizations like the High Fives Foundation ( highfivesfoundation.org ) and Disability Snowsport, United Kingdom ( disabilitysnowsport.org.uk ). Within this chapter in these two sporting contexts, wearable devices are broadly associated with those that can be used to monitor the kinetics and kinematics of an athlete and their equipment. This chapter will first consider image-based alternatives and then focus on wearable sensors, in three main sections covering, (1) sports wearables, (2) disability sport and the use of wearables, and (3) extreme sport and the use of wearables, as well as making recommendations for the future.

In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of using the virtual fit pressure map in a clothing-specific CAD program to predict pressures applied by sports compression garments by analyzing pressure prediction accuracy and process practicability. In wearer trials with whole-body compression sportswear, we measured in vivo pressures and compared them to virtual pressures recorded from the virtual fit pressure maps of the garments fitted to 13 participants’ body scan avatars. No clear correlations between virtual and in vivo pressures were identified and problems in the virtual fit process became apparent. The CAD software currently lacks a link to physical fabric, seam and component properties, which inhibits its use for predictions in new product development. By considering all simulation settings and assessing the numerical pressure prediction capability of a clothing-specific CAD program, this research provides a step forward in assessing the limitations of virtual fit for technical product development.
