We present the Allen Telescope Array Twenty-centimeter Survey (ATATS), a multi-epoch (12 visits), 690 deg(2) radio image and catalog at 1.4 GHz. The survey is designed to detect rare, very bright transients as well as to verify the capabilities of the ATA to form large mosaics. The combined image using data from all 12 ATATS epochs has rms noise sigma = 3.94 mJy beam(-1) and dynamic range 180, with a circular beam of 150 '' FWHM. It contains 4408 sources to a limiting sensitivity of 5 sigma = 20 mJy beam(-1). We compare the catalog generated from this 12 epoch combined image to the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), a legacy survey at the same frequency, and find that we can measure source positions to better than similar to 20 ''. For sources above the ATATS completeness limit, the median flux density is 97% of the median value for matched NVSS sources, indicative of an accurate overall flux calibration. We examine the effects of source confusion due to the effects of differing resolution between ATATS and NVSS on our ability to compare flux densities. We detect no transients at flux densities greater than 40 mJy in comparison with NVSS and place a 2 sigma upper limit of 0.004 deg(-2) on the transient rate for such sources. These results suggest that the greater than or similar to 1 Jy transients reported by Matsumara et al. may not be true transients, but rather variable sources at their flux density threshold.

The Spitzer spectrum of the giant FR II radio galaxy 3C 326 is dominated by very strong molecular hydrogen emission lines on a faint IR continuum. The H2 emission originates in the northern component of a double-galaxy system associated with 3C 326. The integrated luminosity in H2 pure-rotational lines is 8.0E41 erg/s, which corresponds to 17% of the 8-70 micron luminosity of the galaxy. A wide range of temperatures (125-1000 K) is measured from the H2 0-0 S(0)-S(7) transitions, leading to a warm H2 mass of 1.1E9 Msun. Low-excitation ionic forbidden emission lines are consistent with an optical LINER classification for the active nucleus, which is not luminous enough to power the observed H2 emission. The H2 could be shock-heated by the radio jets, but there is no direct indication of this. More likely, the H2 is shock-heated in a tidal accretion flow induced by interaction with the southern companion galaxy. The latter scenario is supported by an irregular morphology, tidal bridge, and possible tidal tail imaged with IRAC at 3-9 micron. Unlike ULIRGs, which in some cases exhibit H2 line luminosities of comparable strength, 3C 326 shows little star-formation activity (~0.1 Msun/yr). This may represent an important stage in galaxy evolution. We are conducting a large survey of Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars at redshift z < 1 with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. The goal is to determine which radio galaxies contain hidden active nuclei with luminosities comparable to quasars. We find that 40% of the radio galaxies have mid-IR power comparable to quasars of matched radio luminosity. These sources show thermal emission spectra from hot dust and silicate absorption from the dusty torus which blocks the optical nucleus from view. The mid-IR bright radio galaxies also show emission lines, such as [SIV], [NeV], and [NeVI], from gas that is highly ionized by the hidden nucleus. However, 60% of the radio galaxies are relatively weak mid-IR emitters, indicating that they do not contain a hidden, powerful accretion disk. Instead, their jets may be powered by a radiatively inefficient accretion flow or black hole spin.

We present results of near infrared imaging of the disk-galaxy-merger NGC 6240 using adaptive optics on the Keck II Telescope and reprocessed archival data from NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both the North and South nuclei of NGC 6240 are clearly elongated, with considerable sub-structure within each nucleus. In K' band there are at least two point-sources within the North nucleus; we tentatively identify the south-western point-source within the North nucleus as the position of one of the two AGNs. Within the South nucleus, the northern sub-nucleus is more highly reddened. Based upon the nuclear separation measured at 5 GHz, we suggest that the AGN in the South nucleus is still enshrouded in dust at K' band, and is located slightly to the north of the brightest point in K' band. Within the South nucleus there is strong H2 1-0 S(1) line emission from the northern sub-nucleus, contrary to the conclusions of previous seeing-limited observations. Narrowband H2 emission-line images show that a streamer or ribbon of excited molecular hydrogen connects the North and South nuclei. We suggest that this linear feature corresponds to a bridge of gas connecting the two nuclei, as seen in computer simulations of mergers. Many point-like regions are seen around the two nuclei. These are most prominent at 1.1 microns with NICMOS, and in K'-band with Keck adaptive optics. We suggest that these point-sources represent young star clusters formed in the course of the merger.

We present extinction curves derived from the broad emission lines and continua of large samples of both radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs. The curves are significantly flatter in the UV than are curves for the local ISM. The reddening curves for the radio-quiet LBQS quasars are slightly steeper than those of the radio-loud quasars in the UV, probably because of additional reddening by dust further out in the host galaxies of the former. The UV extinction curves for the radio-loud AGNs are very flat. This is explicable with slight modifications to standard MRN dust models: there is a relative lack of small grains in the nuclear dust. Our continuum and broad-emission line reddening curves agree in both shape and amplitude, confirming that the continuum shape is indeed profoundly affected by reddening for all but the bluest AGNs. With correction by our generic extinction curve, all of the radio-loud AGNs have continuous optical-UV spectra consistent with a single shape. We show that radio-quiet AGNs have very similar intrinsic UV to optical shape over orders of magnitude in luminosity. We also argue that radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs probably share the same underlying continuum shape and that most of the systematic differences between their observed continuum shapes are due to higher nuclear reddening in radio-selected AGNs, and additional reddening from dust further out in the host galaxies in radio-quiet AGNs. We present Keck II adaptive optics near infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the central regions of the powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A. The 0.05" resolution images clearly show an unresolved nucleus between two spectacular ionization/scattering cones. We report the discovery of a relatively bright (K'~19) secondary point source 0.4" or 400 pc in projection southwest of the radio nucleus. The object is also visible in archival Hubble Space Telescope optical images, although it is easily confused with the underlying structure of the host. Although the near infrared colors of this secondary point source are roughly consistent with those of an L-dwarf, its spectrum and optical-to-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) virtually rule out the possibility that it may be any foreground projected object. We conclude that the secondary point source is likely to be an extragalactic object associated with Cygnus A. We consider several interpretations of the nature of this object, including: a young star cluster peering through the dust at the edge of one of the ionization cones; an older, large globular cluster; a compact cloud of dust or electrons that is acting as a mirror of the hidden active nucleus; and the dense core of a gas stripped satellite galaxy that is merging with the giant elliptical host. The data presented here are most consistent with the minor merger scenario. The spectra and SED of the object suggest that it may be a densely packed conglomeration of older stars heavily extincted by dust, and its high luminosity and compact nature are consistent with those of a satellite that has been stripped to its tidal radius. We are performing a survey of powerful 3CR radio galaxies and quasars in the mid-infrared. The purpose is to test for the presence of a powerful hidden quasar-like thermal nucleus by measuring the ‘waste heat’ that must be emitted by any obscuring dust. The dust is treated as a calorimeter for the central engine. Three early mid-IR detections are particularly interesting: Cygnus A, M87, and Centaurus A. These are notable both as a demonstration of our technique and as an example of the great variety of objects that are classified as radio galaxies. We confirm the presence of hidden quasar-like nuclei in Cyg A and Cen A, but M87 shows only weak mid-IR emission, indicating its AGN is non-thermal, and consistent with only synchrotron emission. We also present a new near-infrared adaptive optics image of Cygnus A which shows a secondary point source.

Standard big bang nucleosynthesis predicts the average baryon density of the universe to be a few percent of the critical density. Only about one-tenth of the predicted baryons have been seen. A plausible repository for the missing baryons is in a diffuse ionized intergalactic medium (IGM). In an attempt to measure the IGM, we searched for Thomson-scattered halos around strong high-redshift radio sources. Observations of the radio source 1935-692 were made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We assumed a uniform IGM, and isotropic steady emission of 1935-692 for a duration between 107 and 108 yr. A model of the expected halo visibility function was used in χ2 fits to place upper limits on ΩIGM. The upper limits varied depending on the methods used to characterize systematic errors in the data. The results are 2 σ limits of ΩIGM < 0.65. While not yet at the sensitivity level to test primordial nucleosynthesis, improvements in the technique will probably allow this in future studies.

We present results from a total of 459 repeated 3.1 GHz radio continuum observations (of which 379 were used in a search for transient sources) of the ELAIS-N1, Coma, Lockman Hole, and NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey fields as part of the Pi GHz Sky Survey (PiGSS). The observations were taken approximately once per day between 2009 May and 2011 April. Each image covers 11.8 square degrees and has 100 arcsecond FWHM resolution. Deep images for each of the four fields have rms noise between 180 and 310 uJy and the corresponding catalogs contain ~200 sources in each field. Typically 40 - 50 of these sources are detected in each single-epoch image. This represents one of the shortest cadence, largest area, multi-epoch surveys undertaken at these frequencies. We compare the catalogs generated from the combined images to those from individual epochs, and from monthly averages, as well as to legacy surveys. We undertake a search for transients, with particular emphasis on excluding false positive sources. We find no confirmed transients, defined here as sources that can be shown to have varied by at least a factor 10. However, we find one source which brightened in a single-epoch image to at least six times the upper limit from the corresponding deep image. We also find a source associated with a z = 0.6 quasar which appears to have brightened by a factor of about three in one of our deep images, when compared to catalogs from legacy surveys. We place new upper limits on the number of transients brighter than 10 mJy: fewer than 0.08 transients / sq. deg. with characteristic timescales of months to years; fewer than 0.02 / sq. deg. with timescales of months; and fewer than 0.009 / sq. deg with timescales of days. We present results from daily radio continuum observations of the Bootes field as part of the Pi GHz Sky Survey (PiGSS). These results are part of a systematic and unbiased campaign to characterize variable and transient sources in the radio sky. The observations include 78 individual epochs distributed over 5 months at a radio frequency of 3.1 GHz with a median RMS image noise in each epoch of 2.8 mJy. We produce 5 monthly images with a median RMS of 0.6 mJy. No transient radio sources are detected in the daily or monthly images. At 15 mJy, we set an upper limit (2 sigma) to the surface density of 1-day radio transients at 0.025 deg^-2. At 5 mJy, we set an upper limit (2\sigma) to the surface density of 1-month radio transients at 0.18 deg^-2. We also produce light curves for 425 sources and explore the variability properties of these sources. Approximately 20% of the sources exhibit some variability on daily and monthly time scales. The maximum RMS fractional modulations on the 1 day and 1 month time scales for sources brighter than 10 mJy are 2 and 0.5, respectively. The probability of a daily fluctuation for all sources and all epochs by a factor of 10 is less than 10^-4. We compare the radio to mid-infrared variability for sources in the field and find no correlation. We have observed 37 bright, polarized radio sources with the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) to present a novel analysis of their Faraday rotation properties. Each source was observed during the commissioning phase with 2 to 4 100-MHz bands at frequencies ranging from 1 to 2 GHz. These observations demonstrate how the continuous frequency coverage of the ATA's log-periodic receiver can be applied to the study of Faraday rotation measures (RMs). We use RM synthesis to show that wide-bandwidth data can find multiple RM components toward a single source. Roughly a quarter of the sources studied have extra RM components with high confidence (brighter than ~40 mJy), when observing with a RM resolution of roughly 100 rad/m2. These extra components contribute 10%-70% of the total polarized flux. This is the first time multiple RM components have been identified in a large sample of point sources. For our observing configuration, these extra RM components bias the measurement of the peak RM by 10-15 rad/m2 ; more generally, the peak RM cannot be determined more precisely than the RM beam size. Comparing our 1-2 GHz RM spectra to VLBA polarimetric maps shows both techniques can identify complicated Faraday structures in the sources. However, the RM values and fractional polarization are generally smaller at lower frequencies than in the higher-frequency VLBA maps. With a few exceptions, the RMs from this work are consistent with that of earlier, narrow-bandwidth, all-sky surveys. This work also describes the polarimetry calibration procedure and that on-axis ATA observations of linear polarization can be calibrated to an accuracy of 0.2% of Stokes I. The Pi GHz Sky Survey (PiGSS) is a key project of the Allen Telescope Array. PiGSS is a 3.1 GHz survey of radio continuum emission in the extragalactic sky with an emphasis on synoptic observations that measure the static and time-variable properties of the sky. During the 2.5-year campaign, PiGSS will twice observe ~250,000 radio sources in the 10,000 deg^2 region of the sky with b > 30 deg to an rms sensitivity of ~1 mJy. Additionally, sub-regions of the sky will be observed multiple times to characterize variability on time scales of days to years. We present here observations of a 10 deg^2 region in the Bootes constellation overlapping the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey field. The PiGSS image was constructed from 75 daily observations distributed over a 4-month period and has an rms flux density between 200 and 250 microJy. This represents a deeper image by a factor of 4 to 8 than we will achieve over the entire 10,000 deg^2. We provide flux densities, source sizes, and spectral indices for the 425 sources detected in the image. We identify ~100$ new flat spectrum radio sources; we project that when completed PiGSS will identify 10^4 flat spectrum sources. We identify one source that is a possible transient radio source. We present a Spitzer mid-infrared survey of 42 Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars from the 3CRR catalog at redshift z 8E43 erg/s, indicating strong thermal emission from hot dust in the active galactic nucleus. Our results demonstrate the power of Spitzer to unveil dust-obscured quasars. The ratio of mid-IR luminous narrow-line radio galaxies to quasars indicates a mean dust covering fraction of 0.56+/-0.15, assuming relatively isotropic emission. We analyze Spitzer spectra of the 14 mid-IR luminous narrow-line radio galaxies thought to host hidden quasar nuclei. Dust temperatures of 210-660 K are estimated from single-temperature blackbody fits to the low and high-frequency ends of the mid-IR bump. We present preliminary results from high resolution (~ 0.05") adaptive optics observations of Cygnus A. The images show a bi-conic structure strongly suggestive of an obscuring torus around a quasar nucleus. A bright (K'=18.5) point source is found near the expected position of the nucleus. We interpret this source as the hot inner rim of the torus seen through the opening of the torus. Using high angular resolution K-band spectroscopy, we measure the ratio of molecular to recombination hydrogen lines as a function of distance to the center of the putative torus. These measurements place constraints on the properties of the torus and indicate a projected diameter of ~600 pc.

The clear sign of a hidden quasar inside a radio galaxy is the appearance of quasar spectral features in its polarized (scattered) light. However that observational test requires suitably placed scattering material to act as a mirror, allowing us to see the nuclear light. A rather robust and more general test for a hidden quasar is to look for the predicted high mid-IR luminosity from the nuclear obscuring matter. The nuclear waste heat is detected and well isolated in the nearest narrow line radio galaxy, Cen A. This confirms other indications that Cen A does contain a modest quasar-like nucleus. However we show here that M87 does not: at high spatial resolution, the mid-IR nucleus is seen to be very weak, and consistent with simple synchrotron emission from the base of the radio jet. This fairly robustly establishes that there are "real" narrow line radio galaxies, without the putative accretion power, and with essentially all the luminosity in kinetic form. Next we show the intriguing mid-IR morphology of Cygnus A, reported previously by us and later discussed in detail by Radomski et al. (2002). All of this mid-IR emission is consistent with reprocessing by a hidden quasar, known to exist from spectropolarimetry by Ogle et al. (1997) and other evidence., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

We present our second paper on the Allen Telescope Array Twenty-centimeter Survey (ATATS), a multi-epoch, ~700 sq. deg. radio image and catalog at 1.4 GHz. The survey is designed to detect rare, bright transients as well as to commission the ATA's wide-field survey capabilities. ATATS explores the challenges of multi-epoch transient and variable source surveys in the domain of dynamic range limits and changing (u,v) coverage. Here we present images made using data from the individual epochs, as well as a revised image combining data from all ATATS epochs. The combined image has RMS noise 3.96 mJy / beam, with a circular beam of 150 arcsec FWHM. The catalog, generated using a false detection rate algorithm, contains 4984 sources, and is >90% complete to 37.9 mJy. The catalogs generated from snapshot images of the individual epochs contain between 1170 and 2019 sources over the 564 sq. deg. area in common to all epochs. The 90% completeness limits of the single epoch catalogs range from 98.6 to 232 mJy. We compare the catalog generated from the combined image to those from individual epochs, and from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), a legacy survey at the same frequency. We are able to place new constraints on the transient population: fewer than 6e-4 transients / sq. deg., for transients brighter than 350 mJy with characteristic timescales of minutes to days. This strongly rules out an astronomical origin for the ~1 Jy sources reported by Matsumura et al. (2009), based on their stated rate of 3.1e-3 / sq. deg., 28 pages, 12 figures, ApJ accepted
