Abstract

We demonstrate the use of Helmholtz resonance to determine rapidly, and with good precision, the volume of particulate material contained in a storage vessel. This non-contact approach is suited to applications where mechanical and other constraints of the working environment preclude weighing and impede the ready application and utility of surface scanning technologies. The primary motivation for this work was the need to know the volume of material (fertiliser) contained in the hopper of a top-dressing aircraft and the discharge rate during spreading. Helmholtz Resonance is an acoustic phenomenon that takes place in a rigid system, consisting of a cavity with an opening or neck, e.g., some musical instruments. The resonant frequency of a system of this type is a function of the opening dimensions and the cavity volume. Solid material placed in the cavity reduces its free volume and if the resonant frequency is known, the volume of the added material can be determined. We have used a resonator (2 and 3-litre interchangeable volume) and a variety of materials including mustard seeds and agricultural lime. Results to date with static tests show that Helmholtz resonance can be used to measure the volume of particulate material. Dynamic discharge tests are encouraging, with the utility of the method for a particular application depending on how quickly the resonant frequency of a particular fill volume in the storage vessel, at an instant in time, can be measured.
