Coalescence of micrometer-scale droplets is impacted by several parameters, including droplet size, viscosities of the two phases, droplet velocity and angle of approach, as well as interfacial tension and surfactant coverage. The dynamics and thinning of films between coalescing droplets can be particularly complex in the presence of surfactants, due to the generation of Marangoni stresses and reduced film mobility. In this work, a microfluidic hydrodynamic Stokes trap is used to gently steer and trap surfactant-laden micrometer-sized droplets at the center of a cross-slot. Incoming droplets are made to coalesce with the trapped droplet, yielding measurements of the film drainage time. Water droplets are formed upstream using a microfluidic T-junction, in heavy and light mineral oils and stabilized using SPAN 80, an oil-soluble surfactant. Film drainage times are measured as a function of continuous phase viscosity, incoming droplet speed, trapped droplet size, and surfactant concentrations above and below the critical micelle concentration (CMC). As expected, systems with higher surfactant concentrations, higher continuous phase viscosity, and slower droplet speed exhibit longer film drainage times. Perhaps more surprisingly, larger droplets and high confinement also result in longer film drainage times. The results are used here to determine critical conditions for coalescence, including both an upper and a lower critical Capillary number. Moreover, it is shown that induced surfactant concentration gradient effects enable coalescence events after the droplets had originally flocculated, at surfactant concentrations above the CMC. The microfluidic hydrodynamic trap provides new insights into the role of surfactants in film drainage and opens avenues for controlled coalescence studies at micrometer length scales and millisecond time scales., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures

Here, we trap and control the position of droplets to study their dynamics using hydrodynamic forces alone without an external field. The hydrodynamic trap is adapted from a previously implemented Stokes trap by incorporating a drop-on-demand system to generate droplets at a T-junction geometry on the same microfluidic chip. We then study confined droplet dynamics in response to perturbation by applying a millisecond-pressure pulse to deform trapped droplets. Droplet shape relaxation after cessation of the pressure pulse follows an exponential decay. The characteristic droplet shape relaxation time is obtained from the shape decay curves for aqueous glycerol droplets of varying viscosities in the dispersed phase with light and heavy mineral oils in the continuous phase. Systems were chosen to provide similar equilibrium interfacial tensions (5-10 mN/m) with wide variations of viscosity ratios. It is found that the droplet shape relaxation shows a strong dependence on droplet radius, and a weak dependence on the ratio of dispersed to continuous phase viscosity. The relaxation time is smaller for the highest viscosity ratios, potentially indicating that the dominant viscosity controls the droplet shape relaxation time in addition to the interfacial tension and droplet size. Droplet shape relaxation time can be used inform the response of droplets in an emulsion when subjected to transient flows in various processing conditions. Finally, an application of this platform for directly visualizing individual droplet coalescence in a planar extensional flow is presented. The microfluidic four-channel hydrodynamic trap can thus be applied for studying fundamental physics of droplet deformation and droplet-droplet interactions on the micro-scale to provide an enhanced understanding of emulsion behavior on an individual droplet level.

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, $Q^2=5.66$ (GeV/c)$^2$ using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ agrees with the $Q^2$ dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high $Q^2$ between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=2.06 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been measured as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}$, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=5.66 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been determined as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}$, which represents the highest $Q^2$ reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40$^{\circ}$ and covered a wide range in Bjorken $x$ ($0.3 < x < 0.8$). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element, $\tilde{d}_2^p$, was extracted from the measured asymmetries at $Q^2$ values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV$^2$. The data display the opposite sign compared to most quark models, including the lattice QCD result, and an apparently unexpected scale dependence. Furthermore when combined with the neutron data in the same $Q^2$ range the results suggest a flavor independent average color Lorentz force.

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) performed inclusive, double-polarized electron scattering measurements of the proton at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Lab. We introduce the Keck Osiris Nearby AGN survey (KONA), a new adaptive optics-assisted integral-field spectroscopic survey of Seyfert galaxies. KONA permits at ~0.1" resolution a detailed study of the nuclear kinematic structure of gas and stars in a representative sample of 40 local bona fide active galactic nucleus (AGN). KONA seeks to characterize the physical processes responsible for the coevolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies, principally inflows and outflows. With these IFU data of the nuclear regions of 40 Seyfert galaxies, the KONA survey will be able to study, for the first time, a number of key topics with meaningful statistics. In this paper we study the nuclear K-band properties of nearby AGN. We find that the luminosities of the unresolved Seyfert 1 sources at 2.1 microns are correlated with the hard X-ray luminosities, implying that the majority of the emission is non-stellar. The best-fit correlation is logLK = 0.9logL2-10 keV + 4 over 3 orders of magnitude in both K-band and X-ray luminosities. We find no strong correlation between 2.1 microns luminosity and hard X-ray luminosity for the Seyfert 2 galaxies. The spatial extent and spectral slope of the Seyfert 2 galaxies indicate the presence of nuclear star formation and attenuating material (gas and dust), which in some cases is compact and in some galaxies extended. We detect coronal-line emission in 36 galaxies and for the first time in five galaxies. Finally, we find 4/20 galaxies that are optically classified as Seyfert 2 show broad emission lines in the near-IR, and one galaxy (NGC 7465) shows evidence of a double nucleus., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 19 pages with 18 figures

We studied the properties of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) UNi0.5Sb2 (TN \approx 161 K) compound in Sb-flux grown single crystals by means of measurements of neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility ({\chi}), specific heat (Cp), thermopower (S), thermal conductivity ({\kappa}), linear thermal expansion ({\Delta}L/L), and electrical resistivity ({\rho}) under hydrostatic pressures (P) up to 22 kbar. The neutron diffraction measurements revealed that the compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P42/nmc structure, and the value of the U-moments yielded by the histograms at 25 K is \approx 1.85 \pm 0.12 {\mu}B/U-ion. In addition to the features in the bulk properties observed at TN, two other hysteretic features centered near 40 and 85 K were observed in the measurements of {\chi}, S, {\rho}, and {\Delta}L/L. Hydrostatic pressure was found to raise TN at the rate of \approx 0.76 K/kbar, while suppressing the two low temperature features. We studied single-crystalline Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3 by means of measurements of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat at ambient pressure (P), and electrical resistivity (r) in hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa. This material displays ferromagnetic (FM) order, with Curie temperature TC ~ 255 K. A crystallographic transformation from I4/mcm to Fmmm is accompanied by the onset of antiferromagnetism (AFM), with Neel temperature TN ~ 161 K. The effect of pressure is to lower TC, and raise TN at the approximate rates of -3.2 K/GPa, and 14.2 K/GPa, respectively. Although the value of TN increases with P, due to the enhancement of the superexchange interactions, the AFM-Fmmm state is progressively suppressed, as pressure stabilizes the FM-I4/mcm phase to lower temperatures. The r vs T data suggest that the AFM phase should be completely suppressed near 2.4 GPa., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We studied single-crystals of the antiferromagnetic compound UNi0.5Sb2 (TN ~ 161 K) by means of measurements of magnetic susceptibility (chi), specific heat (Cp), and electrical resistivity (rho) at ambient pressure, and resistivity under hydrostatic pressures up to 20 kbar, in the temperature range from 1.9 to 300 K. The thermal coefficient of the electrical resistivity (drho/dT) changes drastically from positive below TN to negative above, reflecting the loss of spin-disorder scattering in the ordered phase. Two small features in the rho vs T data centered near 40 and 85 K correlate well in temperature with features in the magnetic susceptibility and are consistent with other data in the literature. These features are quite hysteretic in temperature, i.e., the difference between the warming and cooling cycles are about 10 and 6 K, respectively. The effect of pressure is to raise TN at the approximate rate of 0.76 K/kbar, while progressively suppressing the amplitude of the small features in rho vs T at lower temperatures and increasing the thermal hysteresis., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figues, 2007-mmm conference
