Abstract

IntroductionA national consensus panel was convened to develop recommendations on future directions for home-based dementia care (HBDC).MethodsThe panel summarized advantages and challenges of shifting to HBDC as the nexus of care and developed consensus-based recommendations.ResultsThe panel developed five core recommendations: (1) HBDC should be considered the nexus of new dementia models, from diagnosis to end of life in dementia; (2) new payment models are needed to support HBDC and reward integration of care; (3) a diverse new workforce that spans the care continuum should be prepared urgently; (4) new technologies to promote communication, monitoring/safety, and symptoms management must be tested, integrated, and deployed; and (5) targeted dissemination efforts for HBDC must be employed.DiscussionHBDC represents a promising paradigm shift to improve care for those living with dementia and their family caregivers: these recommendations provide a framework to chart a course forward for HBDC.

33. Disciplinary Literacy: Virginia School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists' Knowledge and Confidence

Abstract

The purpose of this survey was to examine Speech-Language Pathologists' (SLPs) confidence in their ability to support student outcomes by addressing language-literacy needs, to align therapy to educational standards, and to align therapy to student content areas. A total of 237 school-based SLPs in Virginia completed a 19-item survey. Results indicated school-based SLPs were largely unfamiliar with the concept of disciplinary literacy and only 53% of the respondents indicated that they were "Very confident" or "Somewhat confident" in their ability to align their therapy to students' content areas. Confidence level was found to be negatively correlated with SLPs' experience level (rs = -0.14 - -0.24, p < 0.05) and positively correlated with their rating of their education (rs = 0.28-0.39, p < 0.01). These results suggest school-based SLPs could benefit from professional development in the area of disciplinary literacy as well as the broader area of adolescent language and literacy interventions.

42. The Importance of Personal Statements in Counselor Education and Psychology Doctoral Program Applications

Abstract

Personal statements are an important component of applications for counselor education and psychology doctoral programs. However, a paucity of empirical information exists about what types of content are viewed favorably and how this content influences admissions decisions. In the current study, 97 faculty members from clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and counselor education doctoral programs completed an online survey about how favorably they viewed content included in personal statements. Respondents viewed personal statements as the most important component of an application, and there were no significant differences in favorability ratings of content or stylistic issues across program types. Recommendations for those mentoring students applying to graduate school and faculty reviewing applications were provided.

Abstract

Based on the view that strengthening families and neighborhoods can improve the life chances of vulnerable children, this discussion guide is designed to help communities participating in study circle programs to bring people from all segments of the neighborhood together to share different views and experiences, thereby building stronger relationships and working together to find solutions. The introduction to this discussion guide describes what a study circle is, how study circles move people from talk to action, and how to make the most of a study circle. Discussion materials are grouped in four sessions: (1) What is our neighborhood like for children and families? (2) What do families face in our neighborhood? (3) How can we make our neighborhood a better place for families with children? and (4) What can we do? Each section includes an outline of discussion topics, facilitator tips, questions to consider, and preparation for the next session or action suggestions. The discussion guide also includes tips for study circle facilitators, suggestions for organizing study circles, keys for organizing study circles on families and children, and resources for further action and discussion. The guide concludes with acknowledgments of people who organized study circles to test this guide. (KB)
