22. A Comparative Study of Two Pre-School Assessments and Their Relationships to School Achievement.

Abstract

Two school entrance assessments were compared to determine whether or not they are theoretically unique approaches to kindergarten screening. The first test was the "Brigance K and 1 Screen" (Brigance, 1982), a kindergarten entrance assessment which focuses on perceptual-motor development, background experience, and rote memory as determinants for school success. This test does not focus on language development. The second test, a battery of Piagetian tasks, focused entirely on cognitive functioning. Subjects were 30 students (14 males and 16 females) who scored 90 and above and 30 students (17 males and 13 females) who scored 80 and below on the Brigance test administered as part of school readiness screening in a school district in Idaho. Scores for each assessment were tabulated, compared, and analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance and Pearson product-moment correlations. Students scoring high on one test were likely to score high on the other test; low scorers on one test were likely to be low scorers on the other test. The implications for readiness assessment of the correlations between the subtests are discussed. Further study could provide greater insight and more recommendations for school practice. Nineteen tables present study data. The Brigance K and 1 Screen scoring sheet, a sample contact letter to parents, the parents' response card for testing, two-way and three-way classification test materials, and the Piagetian tasks scoring sheet are appended. 24. An Individualized Reading Program.

Abstract

The operating procedures of a university reading and study skills center for completely individualized reading instruction are described. The program is offered as a student service (no fee) on a voluntary, noncredit basis. A prepared set of instructional tapes is used whereby students can largely serve themselves, proceeding at their own rates, and professional staff time is devoted primarily to evaluation and conferencing. The sequence of steps described is as follows: Student appointment for conference, conference between student and staff member, reading test to determine needs, assignment, lab work, comments written on log sheet by student, log-sheet folder review by counselor, and termination of program when goals are reached. A recycling effect occurs, if necessary, with additional conferences and new assignments made until the goal is reached. Application of this procedure within the class organization is described. A sample registration card and a log sheet are included. This document is part of the "Techniques of Study" teacher's manual of the Self Instructional Reading Service. (CM)

Abstract Background Urinary incontinence (UI) following radical prostatectomy is a well-recognized risk of the surgery. In most patients post-operative UI improves over time. To date, there is limited objective, quantitative data on the natural history of the resolution of post-prostatectomy UI. The purpose of this study was to define the natural history of post radical prostatectomy incontinence using an objective quantitative tool, the 1-hour standard pad test. Methods 203 consecutive patients underwent radical prostatectomy by a single surgeon between 03/98 & 08/03. A standardized 1-hour pad test was administered at subsequent postoperative clinic visits. The gram weight of urine loss was recorded and subdivided into four groups defined according to the grams of urine loss: minimal (1, 50 g). Patients were evaluated: at 2 weeks (catheter removal), 6 weeks, 18 weeks, 30 weeks, 42 weeks and 54 weeks. The data set was analyzed for average urine loss as well as grams of urine loss at each time point, the percentage of patients and the distribution of patients in each category. Results Mean follow up was 118 weeks. The majority of patients experienced incontinence immediately after catheter removal at 2 weeks that gradually improved with time. While continued improvement was noted to 1 year, most patients who achieved continence did so by 18 weeks post-op. Conclusion While the majority of patients experience mild to severe UI immediately following catheter removal, there is a rapid decrease in leaked weight during the first 18 weeks following RRP. Patients continue to improve out to 1 year with greater than 90% having minimal leakage by International Continence Society criteria.
