The western population of the red‐crowned crane Grus japonensis in mainland China has been decreasing in the past few decades and wild population enhancement programmes have been launched in this country. First, 14 captive‐bred red‐crowned cranes were released into the core area of Yancheng National Nature Reserve for Rare Birds (YNNR), one of the most important wintering areas of this species, in 2013 (seven individuals) and 2015 (seven individuals) and then 8 more captive‐bred cranes were released into YNNR from February 2022 to February 2023. We used satellite positioning and drone monitoring to study the status of released cranes. The results showed that two individuals (No. BJZ001 and BJZ008) from the first group of released cranes were found breeding in 6 of 7 years in the YNNR from 2017 to 2023. Three individuals (No. WNNR022, WNNR025 and WNNR026) from the second group of released cranes were recorded breeding in YNNR in 2023. All released cranes lived in the YNNR year round and did not migrate with wild cranes. Raccoon dogs, Nyctereutes procyonoides, were first recorded as red‐crowned crane nest predators in the YNNR. Although these released cranes breed successfully in the YNNR, nestlings might face the threat of predators in non‐traditional breeding areas. Further research is needed to determine whether offsprings of released individuals migrate with wild cranes and if breeding in their original wintering grounds is truly beneficial for population growth. After the smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora invaded coastal China, native birds started avoiding the green desert, and bird diversity declined. After many years, a few passerine birds began to enter and use smooth cordgrass, but only birds with a nonspecialised habitat. In this study, we found that a native reed‐specific bird, the parrotbill Calamornis heudei, flocked and sang in a smooth cordgrass habitat throughout the overwintering period near Sheyang Port in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. This observation suggests that native obligate birds may be forced to adapt to exotic smooth cordgrass habitats after long‐term coexistence, which would, obviously, affect the distribution, feeding and reproduction of birds. Introduction: Purpose: the study aims to assess the gustatory function of healthy Chinese adults with the whole-mouth test based on five basic tastants, including umami taste. Methods: the study recruited 464 participants reporting a normal sense of smell/taste (227 females and 237 males with an age range of 19-65 years). A drop (approximately 0.1 mL) of liquid tastant was applied on the anterior third of the extended tongue of each subject. The taste solutions involved 5 tastants (sour, sweet, salty, umami, and bitter) and 7 concentrations. Taste perception scores and recognition scores of the five basic tastants were obtained with this whole-mouth taste method. Results: total taste score of recognition showed a significant negative correlation with age. The elder group (51-65 years) had the lowest scores. The 10th percentile of total taste score of recognition in the group of 36 to 50 years was used to distinguish normogeusic subjects from hypogeusic subjects. The perception scores and recognition scores of females were higher than those of males. The perception and recognition scores of salty, umami, and bitter for females were high than those for males. Total taste score of recognition for non-smokers was significantly higher than that of smokers. The whole-mouth method showed a high test-retest reliability with an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) from 0.774 to 0.833. Conclusion: this whole-mouth method is simple and time-saving and can be easily adjusted to obtain reliable data. The gustatory function was significantly negatively correlated with age. Proprioceptive feedback from Group Ia/II muscle spindle afferents and Group Ib Golgi tendon afferents is critical for the normal execution of most motor tasks, yet how these distinct proprioceptor subtypes emerge during development remains poorly understood. Using molecular genetic approaches in mice of either sex, we identified 24 transcripts that have not previously been associated with a proprioceptor identity. Combinatorial expression analyses of these markers reveal at least three molecularly distinct proprioceptor subtypes. In addition, we find that 12 of these transcripts are expressed well after proprioceptors innervate their respective sensory receptors, and expression of three of these markers, including the heart development molecule Hegl, is significantly reduced in mice that lack muscle spindles. These data reveal He1 as a putative marker for proprioceptive muscle spindle afferents. Moreover, they suggest that the phenotypic specialization of functionally distinct proprioceptor subtypes depends, in part, on extrinsic sensory receptor organ-derived signals. Recent demonstration of mobilities in excess of 10 cm2 V-1 s-1 have energized research in solution deposition of polymers for thin film transistor applications. Due to the lamella motif of most soluble, semiconducting polymers, the local mobility is intrinsically anisotropic. Therefore, fabrication of aligned films is of interest for optimization of device performance. Many techniques have been developed to control film alignment, including solution deposition via directed flows and deposition on topologically structured substrates. We report device and detailed structural analysis (ultraviolet-visible absorption, IR absorption, near-edge X-ray absorption (NEXAFS), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy) results from blade coating two high performing semiconducting polymers on unpatterned and nanostructured substrates. Blade coating exhibits two distinct operational regimes: the Landau-Levich or horizontal dip coating regime and the evaporative regime. We find that in the evaporative deposition regime, aligned films are produced on unpatterned substrates with the polymer chain director perpendicular to the coating direction. Both NEXAFS and device measurements indicate the coating induced orientation is nucleated at the air interface. Nanostructured substrates produce anisotropic bottom contact devices with the polymer chain at the buried interface oriented along the direction of the substrate grooves, independent of coating regime and coating direction. Real time studies of film drying establish that alignment occurs at extremely high polymer volume-fraction conditions, suggesting mediation via a lyotropic phase. In all cases the final films appear to exhibit high degrees of crystalline order. The independent control of alignment at the air and substrate interfaces via coating conditions and substrate treatment, respectively, enable detailed assessment of structure-function relationships that suggest the improved performance of the nanostructure aligned films arise from alignment of the less ordered material in the crystallite interphase regions. The use of PZT films in sliver-mode high-frequency ultrasonic transducers applications requires thick, dense, and crack-free films with excellent piezoelectric and dielectric properties. In this work, PZT composite solutions were used to deposit PZT films >10 μm in thickness. It was found that the functional properties depend strongly on the mass ratio of PZT sol–gel solution to PZT powder in the composite solution. Both the remanent polarization, Pr, and transverse piezoelectric coefficient, e31, f, increase with increasing proportion of the sol–gel solution in the precursor. Films prepared using a solution-to-powder mass ratio of 0.5 have a remanent polarization of 8 μC/cm2, a dielectric constant of 450 (at 1 kHz), and e31, f=−2.8 C/m2. Increasing the solution-to-powder mass ratio to 6, the films were found to have remanent polarizations as large as 37 μC/cm2, a dielectric constant of 1250 (at 1 kHz) and e31, f=−5.8 C/m2. A high-frequency angled needle ultrasound transducer with an aperture size of 0.4 × 0.56 mm² was fabricated using a lead zinc niobate-lead titanate (PZN-7%PT) single crystal as the active piezoelectric material. The single crystal was bonded to a conductive silver particle matching layer and a conductive epoxy backing material through direct contact curing. A parylene outer matching layer was formed by vapor deposition. Angled needle probe configuration was achieved by dicing at 45° to the single crystal poling direction to satisfy a clinical request for blood flow measurement in the posterior portion of the eye. The electrical impedance magnitude and phase of the transducer were 42 Ω and -63°, respectively. The measured center frequency and the fractional bandwidth at -6 dB were 43 MHz and 45%, respectively. The two-way insertion loss was approximately 17 dB. Wire phantom imaging using fabricated PZN-7%PT single crystal transducers was obtained and spatial resolutions were assessed. We aimed to assess general fluid management in China and evaluate the association between fluid balance and survival outcomes in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. A retrospective, multicenter study including ARDS patients was conducted. We described the fluid management of ARDS patients in China. Furthermore, clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients subdivided by cumulative fluid balance were also analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed with hospital mortality as the outcome. From June 2016 to February 2018, 527 ARDS patients were included in our study. The mean cumulative fluid balance was 1669 (-1101 to 4351) mL in the first 7 day after intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Patients were divided into four groups based on cumulative fluid balance of the first 7 day after ICU admission: Group I (≤0 L), Group II (>0 L, ≤3L), Group III (>3L, ≤5 L), and Group IV (>5 L). Significantly lower hospital mortality was observed in patients with a lower cumulative fluid balance on day 7 of ICU admission (20.5% in Group I vs. 32.8% in Group II, 38.5% in Group III, and 50% in Group IV, p < 0.001). A lower fluid balance is associated with lower hospital mortality in patients with ARDS. However, a large-scale and well-designed randomized controlled trial is needed in the future. A systematic theoretical study on the effect of H2S on mercury (Hg) adsorption on activated carbon was conducted by density functional calculation. The form and amount of sulfur species formed by H2S adsorption dominate the pattern of Hg adsorption on activated carbon surface. C–S species is more active to improve Hg adsorption than C–S–C species. C–S species can improve the chemisorption of Hg by enhancing the activity of neighboring C sites. Increasing the amount of C–S species can further enhance the interaction of Hg with C sites, and leads to the formation of HgS. The adsorption of HgS on activated carbon surface is highly thermally favorable, and belongs to chemisorption. C–S species is able to facilitate the adsorption of HgS, and makes HgS adsorbing more likely in molecular adsorption pattern. Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen associated with severe illness and death. Glucocorticoid aerosol is a common inhalation therapy in patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation. We conducted a prospective cohort study to analyze the association between glucocorticoid aerosol therapy and A. baumannii isolation from ventilator patients in China. Of 497 enrolled patients, 262 (52.7%) received glucocorticoid aerosol, and A. baumannii was isolated from 159 (32.0%). Glucocorticoid aerosol therapy was an independent risk factor for A. baumannii isolation (hazard ratio 1.5, 95% CI 1.02-2.28; p = 0.038). Patients receiving glucocorticoid aerosol had a higher cumulative hazard for A. baumannii isolation and analysis showed that glucocorticoid aerosol therapy increased A. baumannii isolation in most subpopulations. Glucocorticoid aerosol was not a direct risk factor for 30-day mortality, but A. baumannii isolation was independently associated with 30-day mortality in ventilator patients. Subendothelial macrophage internalization of modified lipids and foam cell formation are hallmarks of atherosclerosis. Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) are involved in various cellular activities; however, their role in foam cell formation is not fully understood. Here, using a loss-of-function lipid accumulation screening, we identified ubiquitin-specific peptidase 9 X-linked (USP9X) as a factor that suppressed lipid uptake in macrophages. We found that USP9X expression in lesional macrophages was reduced during atherosclerosis development in both humans and rodents. Atherosclerotic lesions from macrophage USP9X-deficient mice showed increased macrophage infiltration, lipid deposition, and necrotic core content than control apolipoprotein E-KO (Apoe-/-) mice. Additionally, loss-of-function USP9X exacerbated lipid uptake, foam cell formation, and inflammatory responses in macrophages. Mechanistically, the class A1 scavenger receptor (SR-A1) was identified as a USP9X substrate that removed the K63 polyubiquitin chain at the K27 site. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of USP9X increased SR-A1 cell surface internalization after binding of oxidized LDL (ox-LDL). The K27R mutation of SR-A1 dramatically attenuated basal and USP9X knockdown-induced ox-LDL uptake. Moreover, blocking binding of USP9X to SR-A1 with a cell-penetrating peptide exacerbated foam cell formation and atherosclerosis. In this study, we identified macrophage USP9X as a beneficial regulator of atherosclerosis and revealed the specific mechanisms for the development of potential therapeutic strategies for atherosclerosis. Objective: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the main type of liver cancer, has a high morbidity and mortality, and a poor prognosis. RNA helicase DDX5, which acts as a transcriptional co-regulator, is overexpressed in most malignant tumors and promotes cancer cell growth. Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) is an important molecular chaperone in the conformational maturation and stabilization of numerous proteins involved in cell growth or survival. Methods: DDX5 mRNA and protein expression in surgically resected HCC tissues from 24 Asian patients were detected by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively. The interaction of DDX5-HSP90 was determined by molecular docking, immunoprecipitation, and laser scanning confocal microscopy. The autophagy signal was detected by Western blot. The cell functions and signaling pathways of DDX5 were determined in 2 HCC cell lines. Two different murine HCC xenograft models were used to determine the function of DDX5 and the therapeutic effect of an HSP90 inhibitor. Results: HSP90 interacted directly with DDX5 and inhibited DDX5 protein degradation in the AMPK/ULK1-regulated autophagy pathway. The subsequent accumulation of DDX5 protein induced the malignant phenotype of HCC by activating the β-catenin signaling pathway. The silencing of DDX5 or treatment with HSP90 inhibitor both blocked in vivo tumor growth in a murine HCC xenograft model. High levels of HSP90 and DDX5 protein were associated with poor prognoses. Conclusions: HSP90 interacted with DDX5 protein and subsequently protected DDX5 protein from AMPK/ULK1-regulated autophagic degradation. Objective: SHR-1210 is a new and promising anti-PD-1 agent for solid tumors. During the phase I study of SHR-1210, we encountered a novel but prevalent immune-related dermatologic toxicity: reactive capillary hemangiomas (RCHs). Thus we tried to summarize the features of RCHs and estimate their relationship with tumor response. Methods: This prospective observational study systematically enrolled 98 patients with advanced solid tumors from April 27th, 2016 to June 8th, 2017 in the context of the phase I clinical study of SHR-1210. This report focused on the skin toxicities. Patients underwent entire skin inspection every two weeks while taking medication. The clinical course of RCHs was recorded and their association with tumor response was estimated. The data cut-off date was November 15th, 2017. Results: After a median follow-up of 242 (range, 29-567) days, RCHs were observed in 85.7% (84/98) of patients on cutaneous/mucosal surfaces; 84.5% (71/84) of the RCHs were evaluated as grade 1 adverse events. No grade 3 or 4 RCHs were observed. The time of onset of RCHs was dose dependent and shortest in the 400 mg-dose cohort (P < 0.001). Spontaneous and complete regression of RCHs was observed both during and after treatment. The objective response rate of tumors for patients with RCHs was 28.9% (24/83). However, no responders were observed among the patients without RCHs. Conclusions: RCHs were prevalent but manageable during treatment with SHR-1210. Ewing sarcoma family tumors (ESFTs) are a group of aggressive and highly metastatic tumors lacking efficient therapies. Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) blockade is one of the most efficient targeting therapy for ESFTs. However , the appliance is obstructed by drug resistance and disease recurrence due to the activation of insulin receptor (IR) signaling induced by IGF1R blockade. Herein β-elemene, a compound derived from natural plants, exhibited a remarkable proliferation repression on ESFT cells, which was weakened by a caspase inhibitor Z-VAD. β-elemene in combination with IGF1R inhibitors enhanced markedly the repression on cellular proliferation and mTOR activation by IGF1R inhibitors and suppressed the PI3K phosphorylation induced by IGF1R inhibitors. To investigate the mechanisms, we focused on the effects of β-elemene on IR signaling pathway. β-elemene significantly suppressed the insulin-driven cell growth and the activation of mTOR and PI3K in tumor cells, while the toxic ity to normal hepatocytes was much lower. Further, the phosphorylation of IR was found to be suppressed notably by β-elemene specifically in tumor cells other than normal hepatocytes. In addition, β-elemene inhibited the growth of ESFT xenografts in vivo, and the phosphorylation of IR and S6 ribosomal protein was significantly repressed in the β-elemene-treated xenografts. These data suggest that β-elemene targets IR phosphorylation to inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells specifically and enhance the effects of IGF1R inhi bitors. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of heat treatment and soybean oil inclusion on protein oxidation of soy protein isolate (SPI) and of oxidized protein on redox status of broilers at an early age. Methods: SPI mixed with soybean oil (SPIO) heated at 100°C for 8 h was used to evaluate protein oxidation of SPI. A total of two hundred and sixteen 1-day-old Arbor Acres chicks were divided into 3 groups with 6 replicates of 12 birds, receiving basal diet (CON), heat-oxidized SPI diet (HSPI) or mixture of SPI and 2% soybean oil diet (HSPIO) for 21 d, respectively. Results: Increased protein carbonyl, decreased protein sulfhydryl of SPI were observed as heating time increased in all treatments (p<0.05). Addition of 2% soybean oil increased protein carbonyl of SPI at 8 h heating (p<0.05). Dietary HSPI and HSPIO decreased the average daily gain of broilers as compared with the CON (p<0.05). Broilers fed HSPI and HSPIO exhibited decreased glutathione (GSH) in serum, catalase activity and total sulfhydryl in liver and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl in serum, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) in liver and protein carbonyl in jejunal mucosa as compared with that of the CON (p<0.05). Additionally, broilers receiving HSPIO showed decreased glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) in serum, GSH and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity in liver, GSH-Px activity in duodenal mucosa, GSH-Px activity and superoxide anion radical scavenging capacity in jejunal mucosa and increased AOPPs in serum, MDA and protein carbonyl in liver, MDA and AOPPs in jejunal mucosa (p<0.05). Background: The elderly patients affected by candidemia are growing in proportion to inpatients, but available data are limited. We aimed to determine the epidemiology, antifungal management and clinical risk factors of death in the elderly population with candidemia in China. Methods: This retrospective study included 63 elderly (≥65 years) and 84 younger patients (16–60 years) at 4 tertiary hospitals. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify independent risk factors of death in elderly patients. Results: The distribution of Candida species did not differ between elderly and younger patients (p >0.05). Resistance to fluconazole and voriconazole for non-Candida albicans species in elderly patients was approximately double that in younger patients. Host-related risk factors (e.g., underlying solid tumour, diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure) and hospital-related factors (e.g., prior stay in an intensive care unit, mechanical ventilation, central vascular and urethral catheters placement) were identified more common in elderly patients. Elderly patients less often received triazoles and were less likely to receive antifungal therapies mostly because elderly or their guardians quit antifungal therapies. APACHE II scores and 30-day mortality were higher for elderly than younger patients (31.7% vs. 16.7%, p =0.032). For elderly patients, antifungal therapy administered before microbiological documentation was the only protective factor for death, whereas absence of antifungal therapies, receipt of mechanical ventilation and APACHE II score ≥20 were independent predictors of death. Conclusions: Elderly patients with candidemia had poor prognoses characterized by certain host and hospital-related risk factors and special pathogen resistance features. More awareness of the burden of this disease is required, and the absence of antifungal therapies should be avoided to improve the prognoses of elderly patients with this severe infection. Increased pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) proliferation is a key pathophysiological component of pulmonary vascular remodeling in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Isorhynchophylline (IRN) is a tetracyclic oxindole alkaloid isolated from the Chinese herbal medicine Uncaria rhynchophylla. It has long been used clinically for treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. However, very little is known about whether IRN can influence the development of PAH. Here we examined the effect of IRN on monocrotaline (MCT) induced PAH in rats. Our data demonstrated that IRN prevented MCT induced PAH in rats, as assessed by right ventricular (RV) pressure, the weight ratio of RV to (left ventricular + septum) and RV hypertrophy. IRN significantly attenuated the percentage of fully muscularized small arterioles, the medial wall thickness, and the expression of smooth muscle α-actin (α-SMA) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). In vitro studies, IRN concentration-dependently inhibited the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB-induced proliferation of PASMCs. Fluorescence-activated cell-sorting analysis showed that IRN caused G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest. IRN-induced growth inhibition was associated with downregulation of Cyclin D1 and CDK6 as well as an increase in p27Kip1 levels in PDGF-BB-stimulated PASMCs. Moreover, IRN negatively modulated PDGF-BB-induced phosphorylation of PDGF-Rβ, ERK1/2, Akt/GSK3β, and signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3). These results demonstrate that IRN could inhibit PASMCs proliferation and attenuate pulmonary vascular remodeling after MCT induction. These beneficial effects were at least through the inhibition of PDGF-Rβ phosphorylation and its downstream signaling pathways. Therefore, IRN might be a potential candidate for the treatment of PAH. The article presents a study which described the demographics, case mix, interventions and clinical outcome of critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in Mainland China. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent predictors for hospital mortality. It concluded that critically ill patients in ICUs showed a case mix the same as those of Western countries, although there are differences in intensive care unit admission rates.

Background: To describe the knowledge and attitudes of critical care clinicians during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. Methods: A survey conducted in 21 intensive care units in 17 provinces in China. Results: Out of 733 questionnaires distributed, 695 were completed. Three hundred and fifty-six respondents (51.2%) reported their experience of caring for H1N1 patients. Despite the fact that 88.5% of all respondents ultimately finished an H1N1 training program, only 41.9% admitted that they had the knowledge of 2009 H1N1 influenza. A total of 572 respondents (82.3%) expressed willingness to care for H1N1 patients. Independent variables associated with increasing likelihood to care for patients in the logistic regression analysis were physicians or nurses rather than other professionals (odds ratio 4.056 and 3.235, p = 0.002 and 0.007, respectively), knowledge training prior to patient care (odds ratio 1.531, p = 0.044), and the confidence to know how to protect themselves and their patients (odds ratio 2.109, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Critical care clinicians reported poor knowledge of H1N1 influenza, even though most finished a relevant knowledge training program. High-frequency PIN-PMN-PT single crystal ultrasound transducers at center frequencies of 35 MHz and 60 MHz were successfully fabricated using lead indium niobate-lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (0.23PIN- 0.5PMN-0.27PT) single crystal. The new PIN-PMN-PT single crystal has higher coercivity (6.0 kV/cm) and higher Curie temperature (160°C) than PMN-PT crystal. Experimental results showed that the PIN-PMN-PT transducers have similar performance but better thermal stability compared with the PMN-PT transducers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
