Summary: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is an acute stress-induced heart failure syndrome for which the exact pathogenic mechanisms are unclear, and consequently, no specific treatment exists. In an experimental model of stress-induced takotsubo-like cardiomyopathy, the authors describe the temporal course of a chronic inflammatory response post-induction, with an initial early influx of neutrophils into myocardial tissue followed by macrophages that are typical of a proinflammatory M1 phenotype, and a nonsignificant increase in systemic inflammatory cytokines. Post-mortem myocardium from the more complex clinical takotsubo patients share features of the study’s experimental model. We report here a method of making polyketones from the coupling of diketones and diols using a manganese pincer complex. The methodology allows us to access various polyketones (polyarylalkylketone) containing aryl, alkyl, and ether functionalities, bridging the gap between the two classes of commercially available polyketones: aliphatic polyketones and polyaryletherketones. Using this methodology, 12 polyketones have been synthesized and characterized using various analytical techniques to understand their chemical, physical, morphological, and mechanical properties. Based on previous reports and our studies, we suggest that the polymerization occurs via a hydrogen-borrowing mechanism that involves the dehydrogenation of diols to dialdehyde followed by aldol condensation of dialdehyde with diketones to form chalcone derivatives and their subsequent hydrogenation to form polyarylalkylketones., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. We use a combination of one- and two-dimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to obtain a full assignment of the 1 H and 13 C signals for solid (+)-usnic acid, which contains two molecules in the asymmetric unit. By combining through-space 1 H- 1 H correlation data with computation it is possible to assign signals not just to the same molecules (relative assignment) but to assign the signals to specific crystallographic molecules (absolute assignment). Variable-temperature measurements reveal that there is some variation in many of the 13 C chemical shifts with temperature, likely arising from varying populations of different tautomeric forms of the molecule. The NMR spectrum of crystalline (+)-usnic acid is then compared with that of ground Usnea dasopoga lichen (the source material of the usnic acid). The abundance of usnic acid is so great in the lichen that this natural product can be observed directly in the NMR spectrum without further purification. This natural sample of usnic acid appears to have the same crystalline form as that in the pure commercial sample.

The preparation of stable large pore aluminophosphate (AlPO) zeotypes offers materials for applications in adsorption and catalysis. Here we report the synthesis of the pure AlPO with the SAO topology type (AlPO STA-1) using N , N '-diethylbicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,3:5,6-dipyrrolidine (DEBOP) as the organic structure directing agent in the presence of fluoride. The AlPO STA-1 can be rendered microporous (pore volume 0.36 cm 3 g -1 ) via calcination and the calcined form remains stable in the presence of moisture. The structure of the dehydrated form has been established by Rietveld refinement (tetragonal P 4̄ n 2, a = 13.74317(10) Å, c = 21.8131(5) Å, V = 4119.94(16) Å 3 ). Multinuclear 27 Al and 31 P MAS NMR, together with 2D COSY and CASTEP NMR calculations, enables resolution and assignment of the signals from all crystallographically distinct Al and P framework sites. Structural elucidation of the as-prepared aluminophosphate-fluoride is more challenging, because of the presence of partially protonated OSDA molecules in the 3D-connected channel system and in particular because the fluoride ions coordinate with positional disorder to some of the Al atoms to give 5-fold as well as tetrahedrally-coordinated framework Al species. These are postulated to occupy Al-F-Al bridging sites, where they are responsible for distortion of the framework [ P 4̄ n 2, a = 13.3148(9) Å, c = 22.0655(20) Å, V = 3911.9(7) Å 3 ]. Calcination and removal of fluoride ions and OSDAs allows the framework to expand to its relaxed configuration. The SAO topology type aluminophosphate can also be synthesised with small amounts of Si and Ge in the framework, and these SAPO and GeAPO STA-1 materials are also stable to template removal. IR spectroscopy with CO as a probe at 123 K indicates all have weak-to-mild acidity, increasing in the order AlPO < GeAPO < SAPO. These STA-1 materials have been investigated for their activity in the Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime to ε-caprolactam at 598 K: while all are active, the AlPO form is favoured due to its high selectivity and slow deactivation, both of which are a consequence of its very weak acid strength, which is nevertheless sufficient to catalyse the reaction., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

We report the first synthesis of the mixed-metal chabazite-type Al x Ga 1- x PO 4 -34(mim) solid solution, containing 1-methylimidazolium, mim, as structure directing agent (SDA), from the parent mixed-metal oxide solid solution, γ-(Al x Ga 1- x ) 2 O 3 . This hitherto unreported family of materials exhibits complex disorder, arising from the possible distributions of cations over available sites, the orientation of the SDA and the presence of variable amounts of water, which provides a prototype for understanding structural subtleties in nanoporous materials. In the as-made forms of the phosphate frameworks, there are three crystallographically distinct metal sites: two tetrahedral MO 4 and one octahedral MO 4 F 2 (M = Al, Ga). A combination of solid-state NMR spectroscopy and periodic DFT calculations reveals that the octahedral site is preferentially occupied by Al and the tetrahedral sites by Ga, leading to a non-random distribution of cations within the framework. Upon calcination to the Al x Ga 1- x PO 4 -34 framework, all metal sites are tetrahedral and crystallographically equivalent in the average R 3̄ symmetry. The cation distribution was explored by 31 P solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and it is shown that the non-random distribution demonstrated to exist in the as-made materials would be expected to give remarkably similar patterns of peak intensities to a random distribution owing to the change in average symmetry in the calcined materials., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Cocoa pod husks (CPHs) represent an underutilized component of the chocolate manufacturing process. While industry's current focus is understandably on the cocoa beans, the husks make up around 75 wt % of the fruit. Previous studies have been dominated by the carbohydrate polymers present in CPHs, but this work highlights the presence of the biopolymer lignin in this biomass. An optimized organosolv lignin isolation protocol was developed, delivering significant practical improvements. This new protocol may also prove to be useful for agricultural waste-derived biomasses in general. NMR analysis of the high quality lignin led to an improved structural understanding, with evidence provided to support deacetylation of the lignin occurring during the optimized pretreatment. Chemical transformation, using a tosylation, azidation, copper-catalyzed click protocol, delivered a modified lignin oligomer with an organophosphorus motif attached. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to demonstrate the oligomer's potential as a flame-retardant. FeAPO-34 with a chabazite (CHA) topology structure was successfully synthesized under ionothermal conditions using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumchloride (EMIMCl) ionic liquid in the presence of ethylenediamine (EDA). The material was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analyses, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Incorporation of iron within the covalent framework of the material was confirmed by the presence of broad signals between 1000 and 14,000 ppm in the 31 P NMR spectrum, corresponding to the P(O Fe ) x (OAl) 4- x species.

Emerging evidence implicates the eicosanoid molecule prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in conferring a regenerative phenotype to multiple organ systems following tissue injury. As aging is in part characterized by loss of tissue stem cells' regenerative capacity, we tested the hypothesis that the prostaglandin-degrading enzyme 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) contributes to the diminished organ fitness of aged mice. Here we demonstrate that genetic loss of 15-PGDH (Hpgd) confers a protective effect on aging of murine hematopoietic and gastrointestinal (GI) tissues. Aged mice lacking 15-PGDH display increased hematopoietic output as assessed by peripheral blood cell counts, bone marrow and splenic stem cell compartments, and accelerated post-transplantation recovery compared to their WT counterparts. Loss of Hpgd expression also resulted in enhanced GI fitness and reduced local inflammation in response to colitis. Together these results suggest that 15-PGDH negatively regulates aged tissue regeneration, and that 15-PGDH inhibition may be a viable therapeutic strategy to ameliorate age-associated loss of organ fitness., Competing Interests: The authors (A. An efficient protocol for the calculation of 13 C pNMR shifts in metal-organic frameworks based on Cu(ii) paddlewheel dimers is proposed, which involves simplified structural models, optimised using GFN2-xTB for the high-spin state, and CAM-B3LYP-computed NMR and EPR parameters. Models for hydrated and activated HKUST-1 and hydrated STAM MOFs with one, two and three Cu dimers have been used. The electronic ground states are low-spin and diamagnetic, with pNMR shifts arising from thermal population of intermediate- and high-spin excited states. Treating individual spin configurations in a broken symmetry (BS) approach, and selecting two or more of these to describe individual excited states, the magnetic shieldings of these paramagnetic states are evaluated using the approach by Hrobárik and Kaupp. The total shielding is then evaluated from a Boltzmann distribution between the energy levels of the chosen configurations. The computed pNMR shifts are very sensitive to temperature and, therefore, to the relative energies of the BS spin states. In order to reproduce the temperature dependence of the pNMR shifts seen in experiment, some scaling of the calculated energy gaps is required. A single scaling factor was applied to all levels in any one system, by fitting to experimental results at several temperatures simultaneously. The resulting scaling factor decreases with an increasing number of dimer units in the model ( e.g. , from ∼1.7 for mono-dimer models to 1.2 for tri-dimer models). The approach of this scaling factor towards unity indicates that models with three dimers are approaching a size where they can be considered as reasonable models for the 13 C shifts of infinite MOFs. Characterising the local structures (e.g., the cation distribution) of mixed-metal ceramics by NMR spectroscopy is often challenging owing to the unfavourable properties (low γ, large quadrupole moment and/or low abundance) of many metal nuclei. 17 O is an attractive option owing to the prevalence of oxygen within ceramics. The moderate γ and small quadrupole moment of 17 O mean that the greatest barrier to accessing the information available from this nucleus is isotopic enrichment. We explore the challenges of ensuring uniform isotopic enrichment with 17 O 2 (g) for the pyrochlore solid solutions, Y 2 Sn x Ti 2-x O 7 , La 2 Sn x Zr 2-x O 7 and La 2 Sn x Hf 2-x O 7 , demonstrating that high enrichment temperatures (900 °C for 12 hr) are required. In addition, for sites with very high symmetry (such as the tetrahedral OY4 and OLa4 sites with C Q  ≈ 0 present here), we demonstrate that quantitative 17 O NMR spectra require correction for the differing contributions from the centreband of the satellite transitions, which can be as high as a factor of ~3.89. It is common to use first-principles calculations to aid in interpreting NMR spectra of disordered solids. Here, we use an ensemble modelling approach to ensure that all possible cation arrangements are modelled in the minimum possible number of calculations. By combining uniform isotopic enrichment, quantitative NMR spectroscopy and a comprehensive computational approach, we are able to show that the cation distribution in Y 2 Sn x Ti 2-x O 7 is essentially random, whereas in La 2 Sn x Zr 2-x O 7 and La 2 Sn x Hf 2-x O 7 , OLa2SnZr and OLa2SnHf sites are slightly energetically disfavoured, leading to a weak preference for clustering of like cations., (© 2021 The Authors. The splenic microenvironment regulates hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) function, particularly during demand-adapted hematopoiesis; however, practical strategies to enhance splenic support of transplanted HSPCs have proved elusive. We have previously demonstrated that inhibiting 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), using the small molecule (+)SW033291 (PGDHi), increases BM prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels, expands HSPC numbers, and accelerates hematologic reconstitution after BM transplantation (BMT) in mice. Here we demonstrate that the splenic microenvironment, specifically 15-PGDH high-expressing macrophages, megakaryocytes (MKs), and mast cells (MCs), regulates steady-state hematopoiesis and potentiates recovery after BMT. Notably, PGDHi-induced neutrophil, platelet, and HSPC recovery were highly attenuated in splenectomized mice. PGDHi induced nonpathologic splenic extramedullary hematopoiesis at steady state, and pretransplant PGDHi enhanced the homing of transplanted cells to the spleen. 15-PGDH enzymatic activity localized specifically to macrophages, MK lineage cells, and MCs, identifying these cell types as likely coordinating the impact of PGDHi on splenic HSPCs. These findings suggest that 15-PGDH expression marks HSC niche cell types that regulate hematopoietic regeneration. Therefore, PGDHi provides a well-tolerated strategy to therapeutically target multiple HSC niches, promote hematopoietic regeneration, and improve clinical outcomes of BMT.

Control over the spatial distribution of components in metal-organic frameworks has potential to unlock improved performance and new behaviour in separations, sensing and catalysis. We report an unprecedented single-step synthesis of multi-component metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles based on the canonical ZIF-8 (Zn) system and its Cd analogue, which form with a core-shell structure whose internal interface can be systematically tuned. We use scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and a new composition gradient model to fit high-resolution X-ray diffraction data to show how core-shell composition and interface characteristics are intricately controlled by synthesis temperature and reaction composition. Particle formation is investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction, which reveals that the spatial distribution of components evolves with time and is determined by the interplay of phase stability, crystallisation kinetics and diffusion. The synthesis of chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly relevant for asymmetric heterogenous catalysis, yet very challenging. Chiral MOFs with MOF-74 topology were synthesised by using post-synthetic modification with proline. Vibrational circular dichroism studies demonstrate that proline is the source of chirality. The solvents used in the synthesis play a key role in tuning the loading of proline and its interaction with the MOF-74 framework. In N,N'-dimethylformamide, proline coordinates monodentate to the Zn 2+ ions within the MOF-74 framework, whereas it is only weakly bound to the framework when using methanol as solvent. Introducing chirality within the MOF-74 framework also leads to the formation of defects, with both the organic linker and metal ions missing from the framework. The formation of defects combined with the coordination of DMF and proline within the framework leads to a pore blocking effect. An AlPO 4 zeotype has been prepared using the aromatic diamine 1,10-phenanthroline and some of its methylated analogues as templates. In each case the two template N atoms bind to a specific framework Al site to expand its coordination to the unusual octahedral AlO 4 N 2 environment. Furthermore, using this framework-bound template, Fe atoms can be included selectively at this site in the framework by direct synthesis, as confirmed by annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and Rietveld refinement. Calcination removes the organic molecules to give large pore framework solids, with BET surface areas up to 540 m 2  g -1 and two perpendicular sets of channels that intersect to give pore space connected by 12-ring openings along all crystallographic directions., (© 2020 The Authors. We present an NMR crystallographic investigation of two as-made forms of the recently characterized gallophosphate GaPO-34A, which has an unusual framework composition with a Ga:P ratio of 7:6 and contains both hydroxide and fluoride anions and either 1-methylimidazolium or pyridinium as the structure-directing agent. We combine previously reported X-ray crystallographic data with solid-state NMR spectroscopy and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations to show that the structure contains at least three distinct types of disorder (occupational, compositional, and dynamic). The occupational disorder arises from the presence of six anion sites per unit cell, but a total occupancy of five of these, leading to full occupancy of four sites and partial occupancy of the fifth and sixth (which are related by symmetry). The mixture of OH and F present leads to compositional disorder on the occupied anion sites, although the occupancy of some sites by F is calculated to be energetically unfavorable and signals relating to F on these sites are not observed by NMR spectroscopy, confirming that the compositional disorder is not random. Finally, a combination of high-field 71 Ga NMR spectroscopy and variable-temperature 13 C and 31 P NMR experiments shows that the structure directing agents are dynamic on the microsecond time scale, which can be supported by averaging the 31 P chemical shifts calculated with the SDA in different orientations. This demonstrates the value of an NMR crystallographic approach, particularly in the case of highly disordered crystalline materials, where the growth of large single crystals for conventional structure determination may not be possible owing to the extent of disorder present.

The breathing behaviour of 17O-enriched (Al,Ga)-MIL-53, a terephthalate-based metal-organic framework, has been investigated using a combination of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and first-principles calculations. These reveal that the behaviour observed for as-made, calcined, hydrated and subsequently dehydrated mixed-metal MIL-53 materials differs with composition, but cannot be described as the compositionally weighted average of the breathing behaviour seen for the two end members. Although the form of MIL-53 adopted by the as-made material is independent of metal composition, upon calcination, materials with higher levels of Al adopt an open pore (OP) form, as found for the Al end member, but substitution of Ga results in mixed pore materials, with OP and narrow pore (NP) forms co-existing. Although the Ga end member is prone to decomposition under the calcination conditions used, a low level of Al in the starting synthesis (5%) leads to an OP mixed-metal MOF that is stable to calcination. Upon hydration, all materials almost exclusively adopt a closed pore (CP) structure, with strong hydrogen bonding interactions with water leading to two distinct resonances from the carboxylate oxygens in 17O NMR spectra. When dehydrated, different framework structures are found for the two end members, OP for Al-MIL-53 and NP for Ga-MIL-53, with the proportion of NP MOF seen to increase systematically with the Ga content in mixed-metal materials, in contrast to the forms seen upon initial calcination. 17O NMR spectra of mixed-metal MIL-53 materials show an increased preference for clustering of like cations as the Ga content increases. This is not a result of the small-scale dry gel conversion reactions used for enrichment, as a similar cation distribution and clustering is also observed for (Al0.5,Ga0.5)-MIL-53 synthesised hydrothermally and enriched with 17O via post-synthetic steaming.

Deoxyfluorination is a primary method for the formation of C-F bonds. Bespoke reagents are commonly used because of issues associated with the low reactivity of metal fluorides. Reported here is the development of a simple strategy for deoxyfluorination, using first-row transition-metal fluorides, and it overcomes these limitations. Using CuF 2 as an exemplar, activation of an O-alkylisourea adduct, formed in situ, allows effective nucleophilic fluoride transfer to a range of primary and secondary alcohols. Spectroscopic investigations have been used to probe the origin of the enhanced reactivity of CuF 2 . The synthesis of a new solid solution of the oxyhydroxide Ga 5- x Al x O 7 (OH) is investigated via solvothermal reaction between gallium acetylacetonate and aluminum isopropoxide in 1,4-butanediol at 240 °C. A limited compositional range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5 is produced, with the hexagonal unit cell parameters refined from powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) showing a linear contraction in unit cell volume with an increase in Al content. Solid-state 27 Al and 71 Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies show a strong preference for Ga to occupy the tetrahedral sites and Al to occupy the octahedral sites. Using isopropanol as the solvent, γ-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 defect spinel solid solutions with x ≤ 1.8 can be prepared at 240 °C in 24 h. These materials are nanocrystalline, as evidenced by their broad diffraction profiles; however, the refined cubic lattice parameter shows a linear relationship with the Ga:Al content, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy again shows a preference for Al to occupy the octahedral sites. Thermal decomposition of Ga 5- x Al x O 7 (OH) occurs via poorly ordered materials that resemble ε-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 and κ-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 , but γ-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 transforms above 750 °C to monoclinic β-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.3 and to hexagonal α-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 for x = 1.8, with intermediate compositions of 1.3 < x < 1.8 giving mixtures of the α- and β-polymorphs. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy shows only the expected octahedral Al for α-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 , and for β-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 , the ∼1:2 tetrahedral:octahedral Al ratio is in good agreement with the results of Rietveld analysis of the average structures against powder XRD data. Relative energies calculated by periodic density functional theory confirm that there is an ∼5.2 kJ mol -1 penalty for tetrahedral rather than octahedral Al in Ga 5- x Al x O 7 (OH), whereas this penalty is much smaller (∼2.0 kJ mol -1 ) for β-Ga 2- x Al x O 3 , in good qualitative agreement with the experimental NMR spectra.

NMR spectroscopy of paramagnetic materials (pNMR) has the potential to provide great structural insight, but many challenges remain in interpreting the spectra in detail. This work presents a study of a series of structurally analogous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on 5-substituted isophthalate linkers and Cu(II) paddlewheel dimers, of interest owing to their "crumple zone" structural rearrangement on dehydration/rehydration. 13 C MAS NMR spectra reveal a wide variation in the observed resonance position for chemically similar C species in the different MOFs but, despite this, resonances are overlapped in several cases. However, by considering a combination of the integration of quantitative spectra, the resonance position as a function of temperature and T 1 relaxation measurements, the spectra can be fully assigned. It is also demonstrated that the prototypical MOF in this series, STAM-1, displays a crumple zone rearrangement on dehydration, similar to the well-characterised 5-ethoxyisophthalate MOF (STAM-17-OEt) although, while the materials have similar local C environments, dehydrated STAM-1 exhibits less long-range order., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. We report solid-state 13 C NMR spectra of urea-loaded copper benzoate, Cu 2 (C 6 H 5 CO 2 ) 4 ·2(urea), a simplified model for copper paddlewheel-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), along with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) computation of the paramagnetic NMR (pNMR) chemical shifts. Assuming a Boltzmann distribution between a diamagnetic open-shell singlet ground state (in a broken-symmetry Kohn-Sham DFT description) and an excited triplet state, the observed δ( 13 C) values are reproduced reasonably well at the PBE0-⅓/IGLO-II//PBE0-D3/AE1 level. Using the proposed assignments of the signals, the mean absolute deviation between computed and observed 13 C chemical shifts is below 30 ppm over a range of more than 1100 ppm., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. The multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning (MQMAS) experiment is a popular choice for obtaining high-resolution solid-state NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei with half-integer spin quantum number. However, its inherently poor sensitivity limits its application in more challenging systems. In particular, the use of higher-order multiple-quantum coherences, which have the potential to provide higher resolution in the isotropic spectrum, results in a further decrease in sensitivity. Here we extend our recent work, which introduced an automated, high-throughput approach to generate amplitude-modulated composite pulses (termed FAM-N) to improve the efficiency of the conversion of three-quantum coherences, and explore the use of similar pulses in five-quantum MAS experiments. We consider three different approaches, and are able to demonstrate that all three provide good enhancements over single pulse conversion in all but the most extreme cases, and work well at a range of spinning rates. We show that FAM-N pulses are robust to variation in the quadrupolar coupling and rf nutation rate, demonstrating their applicability in multisite systems and systems where direct experimental optimisation of complex composite pulses is not feasible. This work will ease the implementation of higher-order MQMAS experiments and enable their application to materials and systems that were previously deemed too difficult to study., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. By replacing Lewis acids with Brønsted acids as catalysts, continuous flow synthesis of hypercrosslinked polymers is achieved within 10% of the time required for a typical batch reaction. Compared with batch-synthesised polymers, the flow-produced materials take up 24% more CO2, precluding the need for lengthy reaction protocols to yield high-performance hypercrosslinked polymers for carbon capture.

The 31 P chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) offers a potential source of new information to help determine the structures of aluminophosphate (AlPO) framework materials. We investigate how to measure the CSAs, which are small (span of ~20-30 ppm) for AlPOs, demonstrating the need for CSA-amplification experiments (often in conjunction with 27 Al and/or 1 H decoupling) at high magnetic field (20.0 T) to obtain accurate values. We show that the most shielded component of the chemical shift tensor, δ 33 , is related to the length of the shortest P─O bond, whereas the more deshielded components, δ 11 and δ 22 can be related more readily to the mean P─O bond lengths and P─O─Al angles. Using the case of Mg-doped STA-2 as an example, the CSA is shown to be much larger for P(OAl) 4-n (OMg) n environments, primarily owing to a much shorter P─O(Mg) bond affecting δ 33 , however, because the mean P─O bond lengths and P─O─T (T = Al, Mg) bond angles do not change significantly between P(OAl) 4 and P(OAl) 4-n (OMg) n sites, the isotropic chemical shifts for these species are similar, leading to overlapped spectral lines. When the CSA information is included, spectral assignment becomes unambiguous, therefore, although the specialist conditions required might preclude the routine measurement of 31 P CSAs in AlPOs, in some cases (particularly doped materials), the experiments can still provide valuable additional information for spectral assignment., (© 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

The Earth's transition zone, at depths of 410-660 km, while being composed of nominally anhydrous magnesium silicate minerals, may be subject to significant hydration. Little is known about the mechanism of hydration, despite the vital role this plays in the physical and chemical properties of the mantle, leading to a need for improved structural characterization. Here we present an ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS) investigation of semihydrous (1.65 wt % H 2 O) and fully hydrous (3.3 wt % H 2 O) wadsleyite. Following the AIRSS process, k-means clustering was used to select sets of structures with duplicates removed, which were then subjected to further geometry optimization with tighter constraints prior to NMR calculations. Semihydrous models identify a ground-state structure (Mg3 vacancies, O1-H hydroxyls) that aligns with a number of previous experimental observations. However, predicted NMR parameters fail to reproduce low-intensity signals observed in solid-state NMR spectra. In contrast, the fully hydrous models produced by AIRSS, which enable both isolated and clustered defects, are able to explain observed NMR signals via just four low-enthalpy structures: (i) a ground state, with isolated Mg3 vacancies and O1-H hydroxyls; (ii/iii) edge-sharing Mg3 vacancies with O1-H and O3-H species; and (iv) edge-sharing Mg1 and Mg3 vacancies with O1-H, O3-H, and O4-H hydroxyls. Thus, the combination of advanced structure searching approaches and solid-state NMR spectroscopy is able to provide new and detailed insight into the structure of this important mantle mineral.

Highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have undergone exciting developments over the past few decades, show promise for a wide range of applications. However, many studies indicate that they suffer from significant stability issues, especially with respect to their interactions with water, which severely limits their practical potential. Here we demonstrate how the presence of 'sacrificial' bonds in the coordination environment of its metal centres (referred to as hemilability) endows a dehydrated copper-based MOF with good hydrolytic stability. On exposure to water, in contrast to the indiscriminate breaking of coordination bonds that typically results in structure degradation, it is non-structural weak interactions between the MOF's copper paddlewheel clusters that are broken and the framework recovers its as-synthesized, hydrated structure. This MOF retained its structural integrity even after contact with water for one year, whereas HKUST-1, a compositionally similar material that lacks these sacrificial bonds, loses its crystallinity in less than a day under the same conditions.

Post-synthetic modification of the hafnium metal-organic framework MOF-808(Hf) to include triarylphosphine ligands is reported. Sulfonated phenylphosphines are incorporated without oxidation to give a "MOF ligand" that can complex late transition metals such as Ir and Rh to give a bifunctional catalyst containing both metal-phosphine complexes and the Lewis acidic framework hafnium metal sites. The rhodium(III) hydrogarnets Ca 3 Rh 2 (OH) 12 and Sr 3 Rh 2 (OH) 12 crystallize as polycrystalline powders under hydrothermal conditions at 200 °C from RhCl 3 ·3H 2 O and either Ca(OH) 2 or Sr(OH) 2 in either 12 M NaOH or KOH. Rietveld refinements against synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data allow the first crystal structures of the two materials to be determined. If BaO 2 is used as a reagent and the concentration of hydroxide increased to hydroflux conditions (excess NaOH), then single crystals of a new complex rhodium hydroxide, BaNaRh(OH) 6 , are formed in a phase-pure sample, with sodium included from the flux. Structure solution from single-crystal XRD data reveals isolated octahedral Rh centers that share hydroxides with 10-coordinate Ba and two independent 8-coordinate Na sites. 23 Na magic-angle spinning NMR confirms the presence of the two crystallographically distinct Na sites and also verifies the diamagnetic nature of the sample, expected for Rh(III). The thermal behavior of the hydroxides on heating in air was investigated using X-ray thermodiffractometry, showing different decomposition pathways for each material. Ca 3 Rh 2 (OH) 12 yields CaRh 2 O 4 and CaO above 650 °C, from which phase-pure CaRh 2 O 4 is isolated by washing with dilute nitric acid, a material previously only reported by high-pressure or high-temperature synthesis. Sr 3 Rh 2 (OH) 12 decomposes to give a less crystalline material with a powder XRD pattern that is matched to the 2H-layered hexagonal perovskite Sr 6 Rh 5 O 15 , which contains mixed-valent Rh 3+/4+ , confirmed by Rh K-edge XANES spectroscopy. On heating BaNaRh(OH) 6 , a complex set of decomposition events takes place via transient phases.

The present work shows the synthesis of nano-sized hybrid zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) with the rho topology based on a mixture of the linkers benzimidazole (bIm) and 4-methyl-5-imidazolecarboxaldehyde (4-m-5-ica). The hybrid ZIF was obtained by post-synthetic modification of ZIF-93 in a bIm solution. The use of different solvents, MeOH and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and reaction times led to differences in the quantity of bIm incorporated to the framework, from 7.4 to 23 % according to solution-state NMR spectroscopy. XPS analysis showed that the mixture of linkers was also present at the surface of the particles. The inclusion of bIm to the ZIF-93 nanoparticles improved the thermal stability of the framework and also increased the hydrophobicity according to water adsorption results. N 2 and CO 2 adsorption experiments revealed that the hybrid material has an intermediate adsorption capacity, between those of ZIF-93 and ZIF-11. Finally, ZIF-93/11 hybrid materials were applied as fillers in polybenzimidazole (PBI) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). These MMMs were used for H 2 /CO 2 separation (at 180 °C) reaching values of 207 Barrer of H 2 and a H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 7.7 that clearly surpassed the Robeson upper bound (corrected for this temperature)., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A series of P-E-containing heterocycles (E=chalcogen) with aromatic backbones were synthesised and characterised by single-crystal and powder XRD, microanalysis and mass spectrometry. Solution- and solid-state 31 P and 77 Se NMR spectroscopy revealed significant differences between the NMR parameters in solution and in the solid state, related to conformational changes in the molecules. Many compounds were shown to exhibit a number of different polymorphic structures (identified by single-crystal XRD), although the bulk material studied by solid-state NMR spectroscopy often contained just one major polymorph. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation following myeloablative chemotherapy is a curative treatment for many hematopoietic malignancies. However, profound granulocytopenia during the interval between transplantation and marrow recovery exposes recipients to risks of fatal infection, a significant source of transplant-associated morbidity and mortality. We have previously described the discovery of a small molecule, SW033291, that potently inhibits the prostaglandin degrading enzyme 15-PGDH, increases bone marrow prostaglandin E2, and accelerates hematopoietic recovery following murine transplant. Here we describe the efficacy of (+)-SW209415, a second-generation 15-PGDH inhibitor, in an expanded range of models relevant to human transplantation. (+)-SW209415 is 10,000-fold more soluble, providing the potential for intravenous delivery, while maintaining potency in inhibiting 15-PGDH, increasing in vivo prostaglandin E2, and accelerating hematopoietic regeneration following transplantation. In additional models, (+)-SW209415: (i) demonstrated synergy with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, the current standard of care; (ii) maintained efficacy as transplant cell dose was escalated; (iii) maintained efficacy when transplant donors and recipients were aged; and (iv) potentiated homing in xenotransplants using human hematopoietic stem cells. (+)-SW209415 showed no adverse effects, no potentiation of in vivo growth of human myeloma and leukemia xenografts, and, on chronic high-dose administration, no toxicity as assessed by weight, blood counts and serum chemistry. These studies provide independent chemical confirmation of the activity of 15-PGDH inhibitors in potentiating hematopoietic recovery, extend the range of models in which inhibiting 15-PGDH demonstrates activity, allay concerns regarding potential for adverse effects from increasing prostaglandin E2, and thereby, advance 15-PGDH as a therapeutic target for potentiating hematopoietic stem cell transplantation., (Copyright © 2018 Ferrata Storti Foundation.)

A fully interpenetrated 8,3-connected zirconium MOF with the the-i topology type, STA-26 (St Andrews porous material-26), has been prepared using the 4,4',4"-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tribenzoate (TMTB) tritopic linker with formic acid as a modulating agent. In the as-prepared form STA-26 possesses Im3‾ m symmetry compared with the Pm3‾ m symmetry of the non-interpenetrated analogue, NU-1200, prepared using benzoic acid as a modulator. Upon removal of residual solvent there is a shift between the interpenetrating lattices and a resultant symmetry change to Cmcm which is fully reversible. This is observed by X-ray diffraction and 13 C MAS NMR is also found to be remarkably sensitive to the structural transition. Furthermore, heating STA-26(Zr) in vacuum dehydroxylates the Zr 6 nodes leaving coordinatively unsaturated Zr 4+ sites, as shown by IR spectroscopy using CO and CD 3 CN as probe molecules. Nitrogen adsorption at 77 K together with grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations confirms a microporous, fully interpenetrated, structure with pore volume 0.53 cm 3  g -1 while CO 2 adsorption at 196 K reaches 300 cm 3 STP g -1 at 1 bar. While the pore volume is smaller than that of its non-interpenetrated mesoporous analogue, interpenetration makes the structure more stable to moisture adsorption and introduces shape selectivity in adsorption., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The potential of 17 O NMR spectroscopy for the investigation of A 2 B 2 O 7 ceramic oxides important in the encapsulation of radioactive waste is demonstrated, with post-synthetic enrichment by exchange with 17 O 2 gas. For Y 2 Sn 2 O 7 , Y 2 Ti 2 O 7 and La 2 Sn 2 O 7 pyrochlores, enrichment of the two distinct O species is clearly non quantitative at lower temperatures (∼700 °C and below) and at shorter times, despite these being used in prior work, with preferential enrichment of OA 2 B 2 favoured over that of OA 4 . At higher temperatures, the 17 O NMR spectra suggest that quantitative enrichment has been achieved, but the integrated signal intensities do not reflect the crystallographic 1 : 6 (O1 : O2) ratio until corrected for differences in T 1 relaxation rates and, more importantly, the contribution of the satellite transitions. 17 O NMR spectra of Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 and Y 2 Hf 2 O 7 defect fluorites showed little difference with any variation in enrichment temperature or time, although an increase in the absolute level of enrichment (up to ∼7.5%) was observed at higher temperature. DFT calculations show that the six distinct resonances observed cannot be assigned unambiguously, as each has contributions from more than one of the five possible next nearest neighbour environments. For La 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which adopts a layered perovskite-like structure, little difference in the spectral intensities is observed with enrichment time or temperature, although the highest absolute levels of enrichment (∼13%) were obtained at higher temperature. This work demonstrates that 17 O NMR has the potential to be a powerful probe of local structure and disorder in oxides, but that considerable care must be taken both in choosing the conditions for 17 O enrichment and the experimental acquisition parameters if the necessary quantitative measurements are to be obtained for more complex systems.

The templated zeolite-analogue GaPO-34 (CHA structure type) crystallises from a gel precursor Ga 2 O 3  : 2H 3 PO 4  : 1HF : 1.7SDA : 70H 2 O (where SDA = structure directing agent), treated hydrothermally for 24 hours at 170 °C using either pyridine or 1-methylimizadole as SDA and one of either poorly crystalline ε-Ga 2 O 3 or γ-Ga 2 O 3 as gallium precursor. If the same gels are stirred for periods shorter than 2 hours but treated under identical hydrothermal conditions, then a second phase crystallises, free of GaPO-34. If β-Ga 2 O 3 is used as a reagent only the second phase is found to crystallise, irrespective of gel aging time. The competing phase, which we denote GaPO-34A, has been structurally characterised using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction for the pyridine material, GaPO-34A(pyr), and using single-crystal X-ray diffraction for the 1-methylimiazole material, GaPO-34A(mim). The structure of GaPO-34A(pyr), P1[combining macron], a = 10.22682(6) Å, b = 12.09585(7) Å, c = 13.86713(8) Å, α = 104.6531(4)°, β = 100.8111(6)°, γ = 102.5228(6)°, contains 7 unique gallium sites and 6 phosphorus sites, with empirical formula [Ga 7 P 6 O 24 (OH) 2 F 3 (H 2 O) 2 ]·2(C 5 NH 6 ). GaPO-34A(mim) is isostructural but is modelled as a half volume unit cell, P1[combining macron], a = 5.0991(2) Å, b = 12.0631(6) Å, c = 13.8405(9) Å, α = 104.626(5)°, β = 100.346(5)°, γ = 101.936(4)°, with a gallium and a bridging fluoride partially occupied and two partially occupied SDA sites. Solid-state 31 P and 71 Ga NMR spectroscopy confirms the structural complexity of GaPO-34A with signals resulting from overlapping lineshapes from multiple Ga and P sites, while 1 H and 13 C solid-state NMR spectra confirm the presence of the protonated SDA and provide evidence for disorder in the SDA. The protonated SDA is located in 14-ring one-dimensional channels with hydrogen bonding deduced from the SDA nitrogens to framework oxygen distances. Upon thermal treatment to investigate SDA removal, structure collapse occurs, which may be due the large number of bridging hydroxides and fluorides in the as-made material, and the unequal amounts of gallium and phosphorus present.

17 O solid-state NMR spectroscopy is employed to investigate the cation disorder in metal-organic frameworks containing two different types of metal cations. Although NMR offers exquisite sensitivity to the local, atomic-scale structure, making it an ideal tool for the characterisation of disordered materials, the low natural abundance of 17 O (0.037%) necessitates expensive isotopic enrichment to acquire spectra on a reasonable timescale. Using dry gel conversion and a novel steaming method we show that cost-effective and atom-efficient enrichment of MOFs is possible, and that high-resolution 17 O NMR spectra are sensitive both to the structural forms of the MOF and the presence of guest molecules. For mixed-metal forms of MIL-53, NMR can also provide information on the final composition of the materials (notably different to that of the initial starting material) and the preference for cation clustering/ordering within the MOFs. For Al, Ga MIL-53, the distribution of cations results in a mixed-pore form upon exposure to water, unlike the different structures seen for the corresponding end members. This work shows that as good levels of enrichment can be achieved at reasonable cost, 17 O NMR spectroscopy should be an invaluable tool for the study of these important functional materials.

Isotopic enrichment of 29 Si and DNP-enhanced NMR spectroscopy are combined to determine the detailed surface structure of a silicated alumina catalyst. The significant sensitivity enhancement provided by DNP is vital to the acquisition of multinuclear and multidimensional experiments that provide information on the atomic-level structure of the species present at the surface. Isotopic enrichment not only facilitates spectral acquisition, particularly given the low (1.5 wt %) Si loading, but also enables spectra with higher resolution than those acquired using DNP to be obtained. The unexpected similarity of conventional, CP, and DNP NMR spectra is attributed to the presence of adventitious surface water that forms a sufficiently dense 1 H network at the silica surface so as to mediate efficient polarization transfer to all Si species regardless of their chemical nature. Spectra reveal the presence of Si-O-Si linkages at the surface (identified as Q 4 (3Al)-Q 4 (3Al)) and confirm that the anchoring of the surface overlayer with the alumina occurs through Al IV and Al V species only. This suggests the presence of Q 3 /Q 4 Si at the surface affects the neighboring Al species, modifying the surface structure and making it less likely Al VI environments are in close spatial proximity. In contrast, Q 1 /Q 2 species, bonded to the surface by fewer covalent bonds, have less of an effect on the surface, and more Al VI species are consequently found nearby. The combination of isotropic enrichment and DNP provides a definitive and fully quantitative description of the Si-modified alumina surface, and we demonstrate that almost one-third of the silicon at the surface is connected to another Si species, even at the low level of coverage used, lowering the propensity for the formation of Brønsted acid sites. This suggests that a variation in the synthetic procedure might be required to obtain a more even coverage for optimum performance. The work here will allow for more rigorous future investigations of structure-function relationships in these complex materials.

The assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly (ADOR) mechanism is a recent method for preparing inorganic framework materials and, in particular, zeolites. This flexible approach has enabled the synthesis of isoreticular families of zeolites with unprecedented continuous control over porosity, and the design and preparation of materials that would have been difficult-or even impossible-to obtain using traditional hydrothermal techniques. Applying the ADOR process to a parent zeolite with the UTL framework topology, for example, has led to six previously unknown zeolites (named IPC-n, where n = 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10). To realize the full potential of the ADOR method, however, a further understanding of the complex mechanism at play is needed. Here, we probe the disassembly, organization and reassembly steps of the ADOR process through a combination of in situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. We further use the insight gained to explain the formation of the unusual structure of zeolite IPC-6.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with extended three-dimensional networks of transition metal nodes (bridged by rigid imidazolate linkers), with potential applications in gas storage and separation, sensing and controlled delivery of drug molecules. Here, we investigate the use of 13 C and 15 N solid-state NMR spectroscopy to characterise the local structure and disorder in a variety of single- and dual-linker ZIFs. In most cases, a combination of a basic knowledge of chemical shifts typically observed in solution-state NMR spectroscopy and the use of dipolar dephasing NMR experiments to reveal information about quaternary carbon species are combined to enable spectral assignment. Accurate measurement of the anisotropic components of the chemical shift provided additional information to characterise the local environment and the possibility of trying to understand the relationships between NMR parameters and both local and long-range structure. First-principles calculations on some of the simpler, ordered ZIFs were possible, and provided support for the spectral assignments, while comparison of these model systems to more disordered ZIFs aided interpretation of the more complex spectra obtained. It is shown that 13 C and 15 N NMR are sufficiently sensitive to detect small changes in the local environment, e.g., functionalisation of the linker, crystallographic inequivalence and changes to the framework topology, while the relative proportion of each linker present can be obtained by comparing relative intensities of resonances corresponding to chemically-similar species in cross polarisation experiments with short contact times. Therefore, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and in particular the measurement of both isotropic and anisotropic parameters, offers a useful tool for the structural study of ordered and, in particular, disordered ZIFs., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. We present a strategy for predicting the unusual 1 H and 13 C shifts in NMR spectra of paramagnetic bisoximato copper(ii) complexes using DFT. We demonstrate good agreement with experimental measurements, although 1 H- 13 C correlation spectra show that a combined experimental and theoretical approach remains necessary for full assignment.

NMR crystallography has recently been applied to great effect for silica zeolites. Here we investigate whether it is possible to extend the structural information available from routine NMR spectra via a simple structure-spectrum relationship. Unlike previous empirically derived relationships that have compared experimental crystal structures for (often disordered) silicates with experimental NMR spectra, where the structure may not be an accurate representation of the material studied experimentally, we use NMR parameters calculated by density functional theory (DFT) for both model Si(OSi(OH) 3 ) 4 clusters and also extended zeolitic SiO 2 frameworks, for which the input structure corresponding to the NMR parameters is known exactly. We arrive at a structure-spectrum relationship dependent on the mean Si-O bond length, mean Si-O-Si bond angle, and the standard deviations of both parameters, which can predict to within 1.3 ppm the 29 Si isotropic magnetic shielding that should be obtained from a DFT calculation. While this semiempirical relationship will never supersede DFT where this is possible, it does open up the possibility of a rapid estimation of the outcome of a DFT calculation where the actual calculation would be prohibitively costly or otherwise challenging. We also investigate the structural optimization of SiO 2 zeolites using DFT, demonstrating that the mean Si-O bond lengths all tend to 1.62 Å and the distortion index tends to <2.0°, suggesting that these metrics may be suitable for rapid validation of whether a given crystal structure represents a realistic local geometry around Si, or merely a bulk average with contributions from several different local geometries.

Although a popular choice for obtaining high-resolution solid-state NMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei, the inherently low sensitivity of the multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning (MQMAS) experiment has limited its application for nuclei with low receptivity or when the available sample volume is limited. A number of methods have been introduced in the literature to attempt to address this problem. Recently, we have introduced an alternative, automated approach, based on numerical simulations, for generating amplitude-modulated pulses (termed FAM-N pulses) to enhance the efficiency of the triple- to single-quantum conversion step within MQMAS. This results in efficient pulses that can be used without experimental reoptimisation, ensuring that this method is particularly suitable for challenging nuclei and systems. In this work, we investigate the applicability of FAM-N pulses to a wider variety of systems, and their robustness under more challenging experimental conditions. These include experiments performed under fast MAS, nuclei with higher spin quantum numbers, samples with multiple distinct sites, low-γ nuclei and nuclei subject to large quadrupolar interactions., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. The great utility and importance of zeolites in fields as diverse as industrial catalysis and medicine has driven considerable interest in the ability to target new framework types with novel properties and applications. The recently introduced and unconventional assembly, disassembly, organization, reassembly (ADOR) method represents one exciting new approach to obtain solids with targeted structures by selectively disassembling preprepared hydrolytically unstable frameworks and then reassembling the resulting products to form materials with new topologies. However, the hydrolytic mechanisms underlying such a powerful synthetic method are not understood in detail, requiring further investigation of the kinetic behavior and the outcome of reactions under differing conditions. In this work, we report the optimized ADOR synthesis, and subsequent solid-state characterization, of 17 O- and doubly 17 O- and 29 Si-enriched UTL-derived zeolites, by synthesis of 29 Si-enriched starting Ge-UTL frameworks and incorporation of 17 O from 17 O-enriched water during hydrolysis. 17 O and 29 Si NMR experiments are able to demonstrate that the hydrolysis and rearrangement process occurs over a much longer time scale than seen by diffraction. The observation of unexpectedly high levels of 17 O in the bulk zeolitic layers, rather than being confined only to the interlayer spacing, reveals a much more extensive hydrolytic rearrangement than previously thought. This work sheds new light on the role played by water in the ADOR process and provides insight into the detailed mechanism of the structural changes involved.

The aluminophosphate (AlPO) JDF-2 is prepared hydrothermally with methylammonium hydroxide (MAH + ·HO - , MAH + = CH 3 NH 3 + ), giving rise to a microporous AEN-type framework with occluded MAH + cations and extra-framework (Al-bound) HO - anions. Despite the presence of these species within its pores, JDF-2 can hydrate upon exposure to atmospheric moisture to give AlPO-53(A), an isostructural material whose crystal structure contains one molecule of H 2 O per formula unit. This hydration can be reversed by mild heating (such as the frictional heating from magic angle spinning). Previous work has shown good agreement between the NMR parameters obtained experimentally and those calculated from the (optimized) crystal structure of JDF-2. However, several discrepancies are apparent between the experimental NMR parameters for AlPO-53(A) and those calculated from the (optimized) crystal structure (e.g. four 13 C resonances are observed, rather than the expected two). The unexpected resonances appear and disappear reversibly with the respective addition and removal of H 2 O, so clearly arise from AlPO-53(A). We investigate the ambient hydration of JDF-2 using quantitative 31 P MAS NMR to follow the transformation over the course of ∼3 months. The structures of JDF-2 and AlPO-53(A) are also investigated using a combination of multinuclear solid-state NMR spectroscopy to characterize the samples, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to evaluate a range of possible structural models in terms of calculated NMR parameters and energetics. The published structure of JDF-2 is shown to be a good representation of the dehydrated material, but modification of the published structure of AlPO-53(A) is required to provide calculated NMR parameters that are in better agreement with experiment. This modification includes reorientation of all the MAH + cations and partial occupancy of the H 2 O sites.
