During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, children’s media use increased (Mesce et al. 2021) while a decrease in print-book reading was observed (Nolan et al. 2022). An increase in tablet use suggests that when children were reading, it was mostly online in the form of ePub3 pdf files for illustrated works and prescribed school texts, while smartphone use was linked to apps and games. (Susilowati et al. 2021) For many years now, children’s publishers have experimented with digital picture-book formats but have regarded the genre as not suitable for digitisation. This book documents the findings of a one-year research project engaging the children’s publishing sector for feedback on reading trends and digital publishing in picture-book genres. The research assesses the plight of picture books in the current climate and considers how picture-book publishers cater to diverse readerships and new reading platforms post Covid-19 lockdowns and into the digital age. Written by an academic and editor with over 15 years industry experience, this book offers a nuanced response to children’s picture book publishing and reception for librarians, teachers, publishers and international scholars in the fields of publishing studies, library studies, early childhood studies, early education and childhood psychology.

Writers have been using AI tools for years – from Microsoft Word’s spellcheck (which often makes unwanted corrections) to the passive-aggressive Grammarly. But ChatGPT is different. ChatGPT’s natural language processing enables a dialogue, much like a conversation – albeit with a slightly odd acquaintance. And it can generate vast amounts of copy, quickly, in response to queries posed in ordinary, everyday language. This suggests, at least superficially, it can do some of the work a book editor does. We are professional editors, with extensive experience in the Australian book publishing industry, who wanted to know how ChatGPT would perform when compared to a human editor. To find out, we decided to ask it to edit a short story that had already been worked on by human editors – and we compared the results.

This report examines diversity and inclusion in the university context, focusing on two key tertiary education institutions, the University of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia and Universitas Hasanuddin in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. Our research is based on two studies and aims to contribute to the development of initiatives that promote studying environments that are fair, diversified and allow for the participation of all.

This article explores the advantages of analytic autoethnography as an effective framework for empirical research in applied creative practice. It explores practice-based and narrative-driven analysis alongside rigorous quantitative analysis in an investigation into publishing contract negotiations. The author draws from their lived experience as a non-fiction writer, an in-house editor for a trade publisher, and as a scholar in the field of publishing studies. The author’s exploration of the project’s methodological selection process, which led to analytic autoethnography as the primary method, is employed and discussed within an interdisciplinary field comprising publishing and literary studies and legal studies within a sociolegal framework. In detailing the journey of investigation and the application of a narrative-based response to quantitative data, the article discusses the rationale and strengths of analytic autoethnography and how it was applied to the project, including the ethical position of the autoethnographic researcher and a critique of the method’s broader use in cultural studies and practice-based research.

Generative artificial intelligence (GnAI) has garnered significant attention worldwide across diverse industries, including in book publishing. To date, more attention has been paid to its potential in creative collaboration and less to the editorial possibilities of its application. Interest has accelerated since the breakthrough of a new Large Language Model in late 2022. This paper engages with the ethical and industrial implications of using GnAI in a creative context, namely literary publishing. It raises crucial questions about intellectual property, trust, the author–editor relationship and publishing professionals’ evolving roles in shaping quality literature. Using a published story as a test case, we compare edits using GnAI with those by professional editors over multiple drafts and at different stages of editorial development. We consider the potential ethical implications of the use of GnAI in literary fiction editing, highlighting the principles and practices that underpin professional editing to consider how these may or may not translate in the use of GnAI. This is followed by a discussion of the risks and opportunities in using GnAI in editing literary texts in the trade publishing context.

This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s mediascape through a repeated cross-sectional study involving primary caregivers of children aged 7–13 in Australia. Survey 1 was conducted as COVID-19 lockdowns ended in 2021, to examine how extended lockdowns had affected children’s reading habits and screen media usage and how parents had adapted their media supervision and guidance strategies. Survey 2 was carried out one year later to gain insights from the post-pandemic period. The data revealed that the pandemic and lockdowns had led to a substantial increase in children’s ownership and usage of digital devices. In contrast, children’s personal ownership of traditional books and e-book readers had declined, and digital books were less popular than other digital content. Parents, who expanded their involvement in active mediation and media co-use during the pandemic, largely reverted to monitoring and restricting their children’s media activities after it.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and obesity share a complex bi-directional relationship as location of body fat and changes in regional body composition may be more important for OSA improvement than changes in total body weight only. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 6-month weight loss intervention for adults newly diagnosed with moderate-severe OSA and obesity on regional body composition. The secondary aims evaluated the relationship between changes in OSA symptoms and severity and anthropometry and regional body composition during the first 12-months after commencing CPAP and explored differences in outcomes between males and females. METHODS: Participants (n = 59) received CPAP overnight at home alongside a 6-month modified fasting intervention with 12-months follow up. Regional body composition was measured by Dual X-ray absorptiometry, (DXA) and anthropometry before and after the lifestyle intervention. OSA severity was measured using the apnoea hypopnea index via overnight polysomnography and OSA symptoms were measured using the Epworth Sleepiness scale. RESULTS: Forty-seven adults (74% male) had complete measures available with a mean age of 50.0 y (SD 11.0) and BMI 34.1 kg/m2 (SD 5.0). Following the intervention average fat mass changed by -5.27 kg (5.36), p < 0.001) and visceral adipose tissue (-0.63 kg (0.67), p < 0.001) significantly decreased in males only with a maintenance of fat-free mass (mean -0.41 kg (1.80), p = 0.18). Females (n = 12) had significant decreases in waist circumference (mean -3.36 cm (3.18) p < 0.01), android lean (-0.12 kg (0.04), p < 0.05) and android total mass (-0.28 kg (0.39), p < 0.05) only. Regional body composition changes in males were positively associated with improvements in OSA severity (p < 0.01) but not OSA symptoms. This study draws insights from a comprehensive approach that includes interviews, desktop research, transcript analysis, and key takeaways from ongoing research. A notable concern arises from the bespoke nature of NDC Contracts, which demands a nuanced understanding of their contents and associated risks. This prompts a critical examination of the architecture profession's foundation, debunking the notion of the lone genius designer. Instead, the evolving role casts architects as both designers and coordinators of documentation, carrying shared liability. This paradigm shift necessitates an expanded education framework, beyond the current confines, warranting the development of a structured 'apprenticeship' model. Over the past three decades, the construction industry has undergone profound transformations, resulting in heightened complexity to construct the built environment. To comprehend this complexity, the prevailing siloed discussions and contract author-centric approaches must be disrupted. It is imperative that education, both initial and ongoing, equips professionals with the requisite skills to thrive in an evolving remodelling. This research underscores the urgency for adaptive education, ensuring that architects are adept at navigating intricate contracts and industry dynamics, thus promoting architectural practices and an improved built environment.

Authors’ moral rights throughout history have been protected in various degrees across the globe: French law honors authors’ rights to their particular individual creative expression as supreme and perpetual; German law considers an author’s moral rights and economic rights in equal measure; in Australia, moral rights, though only recently codified, are not transferrable as they can be in the UK if waived. While the overarching Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works promises to protect the personality and reputation of authors, the literary landscape is now more diverse, with cross-platform entertainment streams expanding subsidiary rights opportunities in ways not anticipated even a decade ago. This paper explores how publishers and authors are currently navigating the publishing process post contract negotiations. Do authors defer to having their work manipulated to increase exposure or sales? Are publishers and editors successful negotiators and mediators of multiple uses of creative content and the authors who are inextricably tied to the work? Ultimately, where are the lines drawn when considering moral rights and opportunities in a converged literary landscape?

PS08 Challenging Inequities in the Classroom: Pedagogies of Difference (SAH IDEAS Session) This presentation is a preview of content that we, presenters Kirsten, Andrea, and Palmyra, as well as our collaborators—Peggy Deamer, Jessica Gracia Fritz, Tessa Forde, Valérie Lechêne, and Renzo Dagnino—have been developing for an upcoming book titled The Organizer's Guide to Architecture Education, a resource for students, university workers, practitioners, and others interested in organizing within the built environment. The book explores the concept of organizing as a means of collective empowerment and addresses its role in transforming architecture via architecture education. It emphasizes the need to teach organizing skills in architecture schools and advocates for a retooling of coursework and student-teacher relations to foster effective change agents.

Library designs shape people's expectations and experiences of what libraries can be. Their physical spaces house collections, provide safe spaces for people to meet and engage, and enable access to services and activities designed to meet community needs. Libraries' digital spaces extend these services and supports beyond the physical walls, enabling after-hours access to the world's knowledge. When library buildings are designed well, they serve as beacons in their communities. Their interiors inspire people to learn, to create, to think, and to engage with digital and physical platforms to satisfy information needs.

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive Amazonian plant brew. It is usually made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine (Spruce ex Griseb. Morton, Malpighiaceae), which contains three primary harmala alkaloids, along with the leaves of Psychotria viridis (Ruiz et Pavon, Rubiaceae) in which the potent psychedelic dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is found. DMT-harmaloid concoctions have gained popularity in recent years, due to growing anecdotal and scientific reports of therapeutic benefits associated with their consumption. Ayahuasca is now ingested in a variety of different settings across the globe, from traditional ethnobotanical to so called "neo-shamanic" ceremonies. Furthermore, related preparations involving alternative sources of DMT and harmala alkaloids are becoming increasingly common as knowledge of ayahuasca continues to spread internationally. This article reviews the existing literature and draws on original qualitative data from a large cross-sectional study of ayahuasca drinkers, to propose a model of psychotherapeutic processes associated with the consumption of ayahuasca. We assert that it is these processes, facilitated by a range of neurobiological effects, that lead to beneficial mental health and wellbeing outcomes. Our proposed model identifies five key psychotherapeutic processes or effects inherent to the ayahuasca experience; somatic effects; introspection and emotional processing; increased Self-connection; increased spiritual connection, and finally the gaining of insights and new perspectives. We note some important differences in these processes compared with other classic psychedelics as well as the implications of the model for the therapeutic use of ayahuasca. Improved understanding of the psychotherapeutic processes involved with the ayahuasca experience will better equip practitioners to work with this potentially transformative concoction and enable the optimization of therapeutic treatment models for potential clinical use.

A resource map of a public university: an architecture firm; a food co-op. These collaborative projects emerged during a free and virtual summer school named Architecture Beyond Capitalism (ABC), which launched in 2021 as an experiment in architectural education.

In 1979, Peter Corrigan conceived the idea for the ‘Four Melbourne Architects’ exhibition to be held at South Yarra’s Powell Street Gallery. Corrigan led the charge to draw a line between a new generation of architectural practitioners with a fresh design agenda and the conservative practices represented by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA). This exhibition, along with the establishment of the Half Time Club and the launch of Transition Magazine, provided platforms for a lively and vigorous profession. The ‘Four Melbourne Architects’—Greg Burgess, Peter Crone, Norman Day and Edmond and Corrigan—were diverse in their approach to architectural design yet shared common concerns of the post-Whitlam generation. The research for this paper examines the documentation between the four architects as they prepared their exhibition, recording the projects exhibited, along with critical reviews of the exhibition. Interviews have been undertaken with the surviving architects involved and people who attended the exhibition. Four Melbourne Architects was the first of many exhibitions during that period, which became one of many vehicles for public engagement with early postmodernism and those creating it, where collaboration, inclusion, and connectivity informed designers. That process activated a search for a contemporary Australian identity leading to the development of the ‘Melbourne School’.

Located in Dili, the Xanana Gusmao Reading Room is East Timor’s only public library. It was founded 2000 with international help. Including from academics, architects and policy experts at the University of Melbourne. Twenty-one years on, Dr Kirsten Day revisits the library she and a small team helped establish.

Nursing and midwifery informatics position statements are important to guide and inform our workforce. Australasian position statements have been developed to establish the place of nursing and midwifery informatics in the health system and progress the development of senior roles.

Background/Objectives: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) concomitant with weight loss is a recommended treatment approach for adults with moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and obesity. This requires multiple synchronous behaviour changes. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a 6-month lifestyle intervention and to determine whether the timing of starting a weight loss attempt affects weight change and trajectory after 12 months in adults newly diagnosed with moderate-severe OSA and treated at home with overnight CPAP. Method(s): Using a stepped-wedge design, participants were randomised to commence a six-month lifestyle intervention between one and six-months post-enrolment, with a 12-month overall follow-up. Adults (n = 60, 75% males, mean age 49.4 SD 10.74 years) newly diagnosed with moderate-severe OSA and above a healthy weight (mean BMI 34.1 SD 4.8) were recruited. Result(s): After 12 months, exposure to the intervention (CPAP and lifestyle) resulted in a 3.7 (95% CI: 2.6 to 4.8, p < 0.001) kg loss of weight compared to the control condition (CPAP alone). Timing of the weight loss attempt made no difference to outcomes at 12 months. When exposed to CPAP only (control period) there was no change in body weight (Coef, [95% CI] 0.03, [-0.3 to 0.36], p = 0.86). Conclusion(s): The lifestyle intervention resulted in a modest reduction in body weight, while timing of commencement did not impact the degree of weight loss at 12 months. These findings support the recommendation of adjunctive weight-loss interventions within six-months of starting CPAP.Copyright © 2022, The Author(s).

As children’s use of screens increased during the COVID pandemic, their reading of traditional books was affected, a national survey of Australian parents shows. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Melbourne to compare young people’s use of screens and books in the pandemic. Their online survey of 513 primary caregivers of children aged seven to thirteen around Australia showed that tablet use flourished during the pandemic and that COVID lockdowns influenced book buying and library borrowing in consequential ways for publishing and literature. Many parents believed their children’s use of screens had come at the expense of book reading.
