11. Study among betel quid chewers from Indian population

Abstract

Background: Oral cancer is most common in males and also in females. Betel quid (BQ) is the main causative agent of oral cancer. Areca catechu, a major component of BQ, contains certain alkaloids that give rise to nitrosamines. Mitotic index (MI) and Micronuclei (MN) were studied among the studied population. Methods: In this present study subjects were screened from Department of E.N.T. & Department of Oral and Facio maxillary of RKMSP hospital, and different areas of Eastern and North Eastern states of India. For mitotic index (MI) blood leukocyte cultures were analyzed and for micronuclei (MN) buccal mucosa were examined. Results: Some of them had more than one addiction. Micronuclei percentage and mitotic index both higher than normal. Conclusion: Betel quid play a role in changing the oral pathology and thus causes oral cancer.

Abstract

Summary: Arbovirus-borne dengue fever remains a global public health threat. The actual burden of dengue infection may be underestimated due to undiagnosed or misdiagnosed fever cases. The distribution of dengue is influenced by both climatic and nonclimatic factors, including global warming, which affects the vector population and transmission period. Other factors, such as serotype evolution and host immunity, also contribute to the spread of the virus. Different serotypes of the dengue virus show different clinical manifestations. The prevalence of serotypes varies geographically and over time. Early diagnosis and characterization of circulating viruses at the genomic level are important for disease prevention and control., (Copyright © 2024 Copyright: © 2024 Indian Journal of Public Health.)

Abstract

Screening of women of child bearing age among the tribal and rural population of different north eastern and eastern states of India was performed. More than 50% of women in some areas were found to have anemia. As part of the study nutritional supplementation was given to a proportion of the anemic population, comparing the effects of Spirulina, a compound containing vitamins and micronutrients and an iron-folic acid-B12 supplement. Follow-up of the cases was done over a period of one year and the impact of supplementation and a comparison of the two compounds made.
