The Dark Energy Camera (DECam) is a wide-field instrument mounted on the 4m V. Blanco Telescope (CTIO). Its impressive technical characteristics makes it one of the most suitable ground-based telescope for the production of accurate stellar photometry even towards crowded regions such as the Magellanic Clouds. We analysed DECam images acquired from February 2018 to January 2020 towards the Small Magellanic Cloud. We performed a PSF photometry by using the SExtractor and PSFEx tools and producing a comprehensive photometric catalogue in the SDSS system, considering the $gri$ filters. Then, we present COSMIC-S, a photometric catalogue consisting of 10 971 906 sources, including $gri$ magnitudes with a mean error $<\sigma_m> \simeq 0.04$ mag. A total of 2 456 434 sources have good photometry in all three bands. The catalogue appears virtually complete to $m \simeq 22$, with a limiting magnitude $m\simeq 25$. The 2-point correlation function of the galaxy spatial distribution is a major cosmological observable that enables constraints on the dynamics and geometry of the Universe. The Euclid mission aims at performing an extensive spectroscopic survey of approximately 20--30 million H$\alpha$-emitting galaxies up to about redshift two. This ambitious project seeks to elucidate the nature of dark energy by mapping the 3-dimensional clustering of galaxies over a significant portion of the sky. This paper presents the methodology and software developed for estimating the 3-dimensional 2-point correlation function within the Euclid Science Ground Segment. The software is designed to overcome the significant challenges posed by the large and complex Euclid data set, which involves millions of galaxies. Key challenges include efficient pair counting, managing computational resources, and ensuring the accuracy of the correlation function estimation. The software leverages advanced algorithms, including kd-tree, octree, and linked-list data partitioning strategies, to optimise the pair-counting process. The implementation also includes parallel processing capabilities using shared-memory open multi-processing to further enhance performance and reduce computation times. Extensive validation and performance testing of the software are presented. The results indicate that the software is robust and can reliably estimate the 2-point correlation function, which is essential for deriving cosmological parameters with high precision. We used Planck data to study the Virgo Cluster's galaxy M 90 and its surroundings. We find, as in the case of certain galaxies of the Local Group and its vicinity, a substantial temperature asymmetry that probably arises from the rotation of the M 90 halo and extends up to about one degree from its centre. This temperature asymmetry is particularly remarkable as M 90 is a rare blueshifted galaxy of the Virgo Cluster, and it thus has possible implications for the cluster internal dynamics versus the galactic halo's formation and structure. The ESA Euclid mission will survey more than 14,000 deg$^2$ of the sky in visible and near-infrared wavelengths, mapping the extra-galactic sky to constrain our cosmological model of the Universe. Although the survey focusses on regions further than 15 deg from the ecliptic, it should allow for the detection of more than about $10^5$ Solar System objects (SSOs). After simulating the expected signal from SSOs in Euclid images acquired with the visible camera (VIS), we describe an automated pipeline developed to detect moving objects with an apparent velocity in the range of 0.1-10 arcsec/h, typically corresponding to sources in the outer Solar System (from Centaurs to Kuiper-belt objects). In particular, the proposed detection scheme is based on Sourcextractor software and on applying a new algorithm capable of associating moving objects amongst different catalogues. After applying a suite of filters to improve the detection quality, we study the expected purity and completeness of the SSO detections. We also show how a Kohonen self-organising neural network can be successfully trained (in an unsupervised fashion) to classify stars, galaxies, and SSOs. The Euclid ERO showcase Euclid's capabilities in advance of its main mission, targeting 17 astronomical objects, from galaxy clusters, nearby galaxies, globular clusters, to star-forming regions. A total of 24 hours observing time was allocated in the early months of operation, engaging the scientific community through an early public data release. We describe the development of the ERO pipeline to create visually compelling images while simultaneously meeting the scientific demands within months of launch, leveraging a pragmatic, data-driven development strategy. The pipeline's key requirements are to preserve the image quality and to provide flux calibration and photometry for compact and extended sources. The pipeline's five pillars are: removal of instrumental signatures; astrometric calibration; photometric calibration; image stacking; and the production of science-ready catalogues for both the VIS and NISP instruments. We report a PSF with a full width at half maximum of 0.16" in the optical and 0.49" in the three NIR bands. Our VIS mean absolute flux calibration is accurate to about 1%, and 10% for NISP due to a limited calibration set; both instruments have considerable colour terms. The median depth is 25.3 and 23.2 AB mag with a SNR of 10 for galaxies, and 27.1 and 24.5 AB mag at an SNR of 5 for point sources for VIS and NISP, respectively. Euclid's ability to observe diffuse emission is exceptional due to its extended PSF nearly matching a pure diffraction halo, the best ever achieved by a wide-field, high-resolution imaging telescope. Euclid offers unparalleled capabilities for exploring the LSB Universe across all scales, also opening a new observational window in the NIR. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Gravitational microlensing is known to be an impressive tool for searching dark, small, and compact objects that are missed by the usual astronomical observations. In this paper, by analysing multiple images acquired by DECam, we present the detection and a complete description of the microlensing event LMC J05074558-65574990 which is most likely due to a sub-solar object with mass $(0.16\pm0.10) $M$_\odot$, hence in the mass range between a massive brown dwarf and a red dwarf, whose distance is estimated to be $7.8^{+4.1}_{-3.4}\times10^2$ pc thanks to the Gaia observation of the source, leading us to consider this lens as one the closest ever detected., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The Dark Energy Camera (DECam) is a sensitive, wide field instrument mounted at the prime focus of the 4 m V. Blanco Telescope in Chile. Beside its main objectives, i.e. understanding the growth and evolution of structures in the Universe, the camera offers the opportunity to observe a 3 deg2 field of view in one single pointing and, with an adequate cadence, to identify the variable sources contained. In this paper, we present the result of a DECam observational campaign toward the LMC and give a catalogue of the observed variable sources. We considered all the available DECam observations of the LMC, acquired during 32 nights over a period of two years (from February 2018 to January 2020), and set up a specific pipeline for detecting and characterizing variable sources in the observed fields. Here, we report on the first 15 deg2 in and around the LMC as observed by DECam, testing the capabilities of our pipeline. Since many of the observed fields cover a rather crowded region of the sky, we adopted the ISIS subtraction package which, even in these conditions, can detect variables at a very low signal to noise ratio. All the potentially identified variable sources were then analyzed and each light curve tested for periodicity by using the Lomb-Scargle and Schwarzenberg-Czerny algorithms. Furthermore, we classified the identified sources by using the UPSILoN neural network. This analysis allowed us to find 70 981 variable stars, 1266 of which were previously unknown. We estimated the period of the variables and compared it with the available values in the catalogues. Euclid will be the first space mission to survey most of the extragalactic sky in the 0.95-2.02 $\mu$m range, to a 5$\sigma$ point-source median depth of 24.4 AB mag. This unique photometric data set will find wide use beyond Euclid's core science. In this paper, we present accurate computations of the Euclid Y_E, J_E and H_E passbands used by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP), and the associated photometric system. We pay particular attention to passband variations in the field of view, accounting among others for spatially variable filter transmission, and variations of the angle of incidence on the filter substrate using optical ray tracing. The response curves' cut-on and cut-off wavelengths - and their variation in the field of view - are determined with 0.8 nm accuracy, essential for the photometric redshift accuracy required by Euclid. After computing the photometric zeropoints in the AB mag system, we present linear transformations from and to common ground-based near-infrared photometric systems, for normal stars, red and brown dwarfs, and galaxies separately. A Python tool to compute accurate magnitudes for arbitrary passbands and spectral energy distributions is provided. We discuss various factors from space weathering to material outgassing that may slowly alter Euclid's spectral response. At the absolute flux scale, the Euclid in-flight calibration program connects the NISP photometric system to Hubble Space Telescope spectrophotometric white dwarf standards; at the relative flux scale, the chromatic evolution of the response is tracked at the milli-mag level. Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBHs) are a class of black holes with masses in the range $10^2 \div 10^5$ $M_\odot$, which can not directly derive from stellar evolution. Looking for these objects and estimating their abundance is important not only for a deeper understanding of their origin but also for unveiling the nature and distribution of the dark matter in the galactic halo. Since February 2018 to January 2020, the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud have been intensively monitored by the DECAM instrument, installed on the 4m V. Blanco Telescope (CTIO, Chile) with the main objective to discover microlensing events possibly due to IMBHs. Here we outline the developed data analysis pipeline. We have tested it versus known variable sources finding many not previously known variables objects. A few sources show a light curve similar to that expected for a microlensing event, but further analysis is required to confirm the microlensing nature of these events. THESEUS is an ESA space based project, aiming to explore the early universe by unveiling a complete census of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) population in the first billion years. This goal is expected to be achieved by combined observations of its three instruments: the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), the X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) and the InfraRed Telescope (IRT). In particular, the IRT instrument will help to identify, localise and study the afterglow of the GRBs detected by SXI and XGIS, and about $40\%$ of its time will be devoted to an all-sky photometric survey, which will certainly detect a relevant number of extragalactic sources, including Quasars. In this paper, we focus on the capability of IRT-THESEUS Telescope to observe Quasars and, in particular, those objects lensed by foreground galaxies. In our analysis, we consider the Quasar Luminosity Function (QLF) in the infrared band based obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope imaging survey. Furthermore, by using the mass-luminosity distribution function of galaxies and the galaxy/Quasar redshift distributions, we preformed Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the number of lensed Quasars. We predict that up to $2.14 \times 10^5$ Quasars can be observed during gthe IRT-Theseus sky survey, and about $140$ of them could be lensed by foreground galaxies. Intermediate polars are members of the cataclysmic variable binary stars. They are characterized by a moderately magnetized white dwarf accreting matter from a cool main-sequence companion star. In many cases, this accretion gives rise to a detectable $X$-ray emission. VZ Sex is an interesting $X$-ray source whose nature needs a robust confirmation. Here, we used archive $XMM$-Newton observation to assign the source to the intermediate polar class. We applied the Lomb-Scargle periodogram method to detect any relevant periodic feature in the $0.1$--$10$ keV light curve and performed a spectral fitting of the $X$-ray spectrum in order to get information on the on-going accretion mechanism. By inspecting the periodogram, we detected a clear periodic feature at $\simeq 20.3$ minutes that we interpret as the spin period of the white dwarf. We additionally found the typical side bands expected as the consequence of the beat between the spin and the orbital period of $\simeq 3.581$ hours. The source is characterized by a unabsorbed flux of $\simeq 2.98\times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ corresponding to an intrinsic luminosity {of $\simeq 7 \times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ } {for a distance of $\simeq 433$ pc}. The existence of such features allow us to classify VZ Sex as a clear member of the intermediate polar class. Furthermore, with the estimated WD spin, the ratio $P_{spin}/P_{orb}$ is $\simeq 0.09$, i.e. consistent with that expected for a typical IP system above the period gap. In addition, the estimated intrinsic luminosity opens the possibility that a bridge linking the normally bright IPs to the faint population of sources does exist., Comment: Accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal. 10 pages, 5 figures

We report on the XMM-Newton observation of HP Cet and Swift J0820.6-2805, two X-ray photon sources that are candidates to be members of the intermediate polar class of cataclysmic variables. If the historical optical light curve of HP Cet shows a periodic feature at $\simeq 96$ minutes, a clear identification of such a signature in the high energy band (apart for a variability on a time scale of $\simeq 8$ minutes as detected by the ROSAT satellite) is lacking. By using XMM-Newton archive data, we clearly identify a feature (at $\simeq 88$ minutes) which is marginally consistent with one of the binary system orbital periods reported in the literature. We also found a signature of a periodic features on the time scale of $\simeq 5.6$ minutes. In the case of Swift J0820.6-2805, the intermediate polar nature was previously unclear and the orbital and the white dwarf spin periods were unknown. Here, the 0.3-10 keV data undoubtedly reveal an orbital period and a white dwarf spin of $\simeq 87.5$ minutes and $\simeq 27.9$ minutes, respectively. The spectral analysis showed that both HP Cet and Swift J0820.6-280 are members of the under-luminous IP subclass since their luminosity in the $0.3-10$ keV band is estimated to be $\simeq 5\times 10^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\simeq 3.8\times 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, main journal, 2020. 9 Pages. 9 Figures

We show that the optical flare event discovered by Graham et al. (2020) towards the active galactic nucleus J1249+3449 is fully consistent with being a quasar microlensing event due to a $\simeq 0.1 M_{\odot}$ star, although other explanations, such as that, mainly supported by Graham et al. Galactic halos are of great importance for our understanding of both the dark matter nature and primordial non-Gaussianity in the perturbation spectrum, a powerful discriminant of the physical mechanisms that generated the cosmological fluctuations observed today. In this paper we analyze {\it Planck} data towards the galaxy M104 (Sombrero) and find an asymmetry in the microwave temperature which extends up to about $1 \degr$ from the galactic center. This frequency-independent asymmetry is consistent with that induced by the Doppler effect due to the galactic rotation and we find a probability of less than about $0.2\%$ that it is due to a random fluctuation of the microwave background. In addition, {\it Planck} data indicate the relatively complex dynamics of the M104 galactic halo, and this appears to be in agreement with previous studies. The transient event labeled as TCP J05074264+2447555 recently discovered towards the Taurus region was quickly recognized to be an ongoing microlensing event on a source located at distance of only $700-800$ pc from Earth. Here, we show that observations with high sampling rate close to the time of maximum magnification revealed features that imply the presence of a binary lens system with very low mass ratio components. We present a complete description of the binary lens system which hosts an Earth-like planet with most likely mass of $9.2\pm 6.6$ M$_{\oplus}$. Furthermore, the source estimated location and detailed Monte Carlo simulations allowed us to classify the event as due to the closest lens system, being at a distance of $\simeq 380$ pc and mass $\simeq 0.25$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 2018. 6 Pages, 5 Figures. SN 2015J was discovered on April 27th 2015 and is classified as a type IIn supernova. At first, it appeared to be an orphan SN candidate, i.e. without any clear identification of its host galaxy. Here, we present the analysis of the observations carried out {by the VLT 8-m class telescope with the FORS2 camera in the R band and the Magellan telescope (6.5 m) equipped with the IMACS Short-Camera (V and I filters) and the FourStar camera (Ks filter)}. We show that SN 2015J resides in what appears to be a very compact galaxy establishing a relation between the SN event and its natural host. We also present and discuss archival and new $X$-ray data centred on SN 2015J. At the time of the supernova explosion, Swift/XRT observations were made and a weak X-ray source was detected at the location of SN 2015J. Almost one year later, the same source was unambiguously identified during serendipitous observations by Swift/XRT and $XMM$-Newton, clearly showing an enhancement of the 0.3-10 keV band flux by a factor $\simeq 30$ with respect to the initial state. Swift/XRT observations show that the source is still active in the $X$-rays at a level of $\simeq 0.05$ counts s$^{-1}$. The unabsorbed X-ray luminosity derived from the {\it XMM}-Newton slew and SWIFT observations, $L_{x}\simeq 5\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, places SN 2015J among the brightest young supernovae in X-rays., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, Volume 850, Number 2

This paper is a follow-up of a previous paper about the M82 galaxy and its halo based on Planck observations. As in the case of M82, so also for the M81 galaxy a substantial North-South and East-West temperature asymmetry is found, extending up to galactocentric distances of about $1.5^\circ$. The temperature asymmetry is almost frequency independent and can be interpreted as a Doppler-induced effect related to the M81 halo rotation and/or triggered by the gravitational interaction of the galaxies within the M81 Group. Along with the analogous study of several nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, the CMB temperature asymmetry method thus is shown to act as a direct tool to map the galactic haloes and/or the intergalactic bridges, invisible in other bands or by other methods., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, in press in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Main Journal

Astrometric microlensing will offer in the next future a new channel for investigating the nature of both lenses and sources involved in a gravitational microlensing event. The effect, corresponding to the shift of the position of the multiple image centroid with respect to the source star location, is expected to occurr on scales from micro-arcoseconds to milli-arcoseconds depending on the characteristics of the lens-source system. Here, we consider different classes of events (single/binary lens acting on a single/binary source) also accounting for additional effects including the finite source size, the blending and orbital motion. We present a sample of $X$-ray selected candidate black holes in 51 low mass galaxies with $z\le 0.055$ {and mass up to $10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$} obtained by cross-correlating the NASA-SLOAN Atlas with the 3XMM catalogue. {We have also searched in the available catalogues for radio counterparts of the black hole candidates and find that 19 of the previously selected sources have also a radio counterpart.} Our results show that about $37\%$ of the galaxies of our sample host { an $X$-ray source} (associated to a radio counterpart) spatially coincident with the galaxy center, in agreement with { other recent works}. For these {\it nuclear} sources, the $X$-ray/radio fundamental plane relation allows one to estimate the mass of the (central) candidate black holes which results to be in the range $10^{4}-2\times10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$ (with median value of $\simeq 3\times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and eight candidates having mass below $10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$). This result, while suggesting that $X$-ray emitting black holes in low-mass galaxies may have had a key role in the evolution of such systems, makes even more urgent to explain how such massive objects formed in galaxies. {Of course, dedicated follow-up observations both in the $X$-ray and radio bands, as well as in the optical, are necessary in order to confirm our results, Comment: 15 Pages, 2 Figures, 3 Tables

We used Planck data to study the M33 galaxy and find a substantial temperature asymmetry with respect to its minor axis projected onto the sky plane. This temperature asymmetry correlates well with the HI velocity field at 21 cm, at least within a galactocentric distance of 0.5 degree, and it is found to extend up to about 3 degrees from the galaxy center. In gravitational microlensing, binary systems may act as lenses or sources. Identifying lens binarity is generally easy especially in events characterized by caustic crossing since the resulting light curve exhibits strong deviations from smooth single-lensing light curve. On the contrary, light curves with minor deviations from a Paczy\'nski behaviour do not allow one to identify the source binarity. A consequence of the gravitational microlensing is the shift of the position of the multiple image centroid with respect to the source star location - the so called astrometric microlensing signal. When the astrometric signal is considered, the presence of a binary source manifests with a path that largely differs from that expected for single-source events. Here, we investigate the astrometric signatures of binary sources taking into account their orbital motion and the parallax effect due to the Earth motion, which turn out not to be negligible in most cases. We also show that considering the above-mentioned effects is important in the analysis of astrometric data in order to correctly estimate the lens-event parameters., Comment: Published on ApJ, 2016, 823, 120

Planck data towards the galaxy M82 are analyzed in the 70, 100 and 143 GHz bands. A substantial north-south and East-West temperature asymmetry is found, extending up to 1 degree from the galactic center. Being almost frequency-independent, these temperature asymmetries are indicative of a Doppler-induced effect regarding the line-of-sight dynamics on the halo scale, the ejections from the galactic center and, possibly, even the tidal interaction with M81 galaxy. The temperature asymmetry thus acts as a model-independent tool to reveal the bulk dynamics in nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, like the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect for clusters of galaxies., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, in press on A&A

We present the results of the analysis of deep archival \sat\ observations towards the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Draco, Leo I, Ursa Major II and Ursa Minor in the Milky Way neighbourhood. The X-ray source population is characterized and cross-correlated with available databases with the aim to infer their nature. We also investigate if intermediate-mass black holes are hosted in the center of these galaxies. In the case of Draco, we detect 96 high-energy sources, two of them being possibly local stars, while no evidence for any X-ray emitting central compact object is found. Towards the Leo I and UMa II field of view we reveal 116 and 49 X-ray sources, respectively. None of them correlates with the putative central black holes and only one is likely associated with a UMa II local source. The study of the UMi dwarf galaxy shows 54 high-energy sources and a possible association {with a source at the dSph center}. We put an upper limit to the central compact object luminosity of 4.02$\times$10$^{33}$ erg/s. Furthermore, via the correlation with a radio source near the galactic center, we get that the putative black hole should have a mass of $\left(2.76^{+32.00}_{-2.54}\right)\times10^6 M_{\odot}$ and be radiatively inefficient. Planck data towards the active galaxy Centaurus A are analyzed in the 70, 100 and 143 GHz bands. We find a temperature asymmetry of the northern radio lobe with respect to the southern one that clearly extends at least up to 5 degrees from the Cen A center and diminishes towards the outer regions of the lobes. That transparent parameter - the temperature asymmetry - thus has to carry a principal information, i.e. indication on the line-of-sight bulk motion of the lobes, while the increase of that asymmetry at smaller radii reveals the differential dynamics of the lobes as expected at ejections from the center., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Letter to the Editor (in press)

We re-consider the polarization of the star light that may arise during microlensing events due to the high gradient of magnification across the atmosphere of the source star, by exploring the full range of microlensing and stellar physical parameters. Since it is already known that only cool evolved giant stars give rise to the highest polarization signals, we follow the model by Simmons et al. (2002) to compute the polarization as due to the photon scattering on dust grains in the stellar wind. Motivated by the possibility to perform a polarization measurement during an ongoing microlensing event, we consider the recently reported event catalog by the OGLE collaboration covering the 2001-2009 campaigns (OGLE-III events), that makes available the largest and more comprehensive set of single lens microlensing events towards the Galactic bulge. The study of these events, integrated by a Monte Carlo analysis, allows us to estimate the expected polarization profiles and to predict for which source stars and at which time is most convenient to perform a polarization measurement in an ongoing event. We find that about two dozens of OGLE-III events (about 1 percent of the total) have maximum polarization degree in the range 0.1 < P_{\rm max} <1 percent, corresponding to source stars with apparent magnitude I < 14.5, being very cool red giants.This signal is measurable by using the FORS2 polarimeter at VLT telescope with about 1 hour integration time., Comment: Originally submitted to MNRAS on 01/07/2014. WZ Sagittae is the prototype object of a subclass of dwarf novae, with rare and long (super)outbursts, in which a white dwarf primary accretes matter from a low mass companion. High-energy observations offer the possibility of a better understanding of the disk-accretion mechanism in WZ Sge-like binaries. We used archival XMM-Newton and Swift data to characterize the X-ray spectral and temporal properties of WZ Sge in quiescence. We performed a detailed timing analysis of the simultaneous X-ray and UV light curves obtained with the EPIC and OM instruments on board XMM-Newton in 2003. We employed several techniques in this study, including a correlation study between the two curves. We also performed an X-ray spectral analysis using the EPIC data, as well as Swift/XRT data obtained in 2011. We find that the X-ray intensity is clearly modulated at a period of about 28.96 s, confirming previously published preliminary results. We find that the X-ray spectral shape of WZ Sge remains practically unchanged between the XMM-Newton and Swift observations. However, after correcting for inter-stellar absorption, the intrinsic luminosity is estimated to be about 2.65X10^ 30 erg/s/cm^2 and 1.57X10^30 erg/s/cm^2 in 2003 and 2011, respectively. During the Swift/XRT observation, the observed flux is a factor of about 2 lower than that observed by XMM-Newton, but is similar to the quiescent levels observed various times before the 2001 outburst., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A.10 pages, 9 figures

Planck's data acquired during the first 15.4 months of observations towards both the disk and halo of the M31 galaxy are analyzed. We confirm the existence of a temperature asymmetry, previously detected by using the 7-year WMAP data, along the direction of the M31 rotation, therefore indicative of a Doppler-induced effect. The asymmetry extends up to about 10 degrees (about 130 kpc) from the M31 center. We also investigate the recent issue raised in Rubin and Loeb (2014) about the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect from the diffuse hot gas in the Local Group, predicted to generate a hot spot of a few degrees size in the CMB maps in the direction of M31, where the free electron optical depth gets the maximum value. We also consider the issue whether in the opposite direction with respect to the M31 galaxy the same effect induces a minimum in temperature in the Planck's maps of the sky. Gravitational microlensing offers a powerful method with which to probe a variety of binary-lens systems, as the binarity of the lens introduces deviations from the typical (single-lens) Paczy\'nski behaviour in the event light curves. Generally, a static binary lens is considered to fit the observed light curve and, when the orbital motion is taken into account, an oversimplified model is usually employed. In this paper, we treat the binary-lens motion in a realistic way and focus on simulated events that are fitted well by a Paczy\'nski curve. We show that an accurate timing analysis of the residuals (calculated with respect to the best-fitting Paczy\'nski model) is usually sufficient to infer the orbital period of the binary lens. It goes without saying that the independently estimated period may be used to further constrain the orbital parameters obtained by the best-fitting procedure, which often gives degenerate solutions. We also present a preliminary analysis of the event OGLE-2011-BLG-1127 / MOA-2011-BLG-322, which has been recognized to be the result of a binary lens. The period analysis results in a periodicity of \simeq 12 days, which confirms the oscillation of the observed data around the best-fitting model. The estimated periodicity is probably associated with an intrinsic variability of the source star, and therefore there is an opportunity to use this technique to investigate either the intrinsic variability of the source or the effects induced by the binary-lens orbital motion., Comment: In press on MNRAS, 2014. 8 pages, 4 figures. We present the final analysis of the observational campaign carried out by the PLAN (Pixel Lensing Andromeda) collaboration to detect a dark matter signal in form of MACHOs through the microlensing effect. The campaign consists of about 1 month/year observations carried out during 4 years (2007-2010) at the 1.5m Cassini telescope in Loiano ("Astronomical Observatory of BOLOGNA", OAB) plus 10 days of data taken in 2010 at the 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) monitoring the central part of M31 (two fields of about 13'x12.6'). We establish a fully automated pipeline for the search and the characterization of microlensing flux variations: as a result we detect 3 microlensing candidates. We evaluate the expected signal through a full Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment completed by an analysis of the detection efficiency of our pipeline. We consider both "self lensing" and "MACHO lensing" lens populations, given by M31 stars and dark matter halo MACHOs, in the M31 and the Milky Way (MW), respectively. The total number of events is compatible with the expected self-lensing rate. Specifically, we evaluate an expected signal of about 2 self-lensing events. As for MACHO lensing, for full 0.5 (0.01) solar mass MACHO halos, our prediction is for about 4 (7) events. The comparatively small number of expected MACHO versus self lensing events, together with the small number statistics at disposal, do not enable us to put strong constraints on that population. Rather, the hypothesis, suggested by a previous analysis, on the MACHO nature of OAB-07-N2, one of the microlensing candidates, translates into a sizeable lower limit for the halo mass fraction in form of the would be MACHO population, f, of about 15% for 0.5 solar mass MACHOs., Comment: ApJ accepted, 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Symbiotic X-ray binaries form a subclass of low-mass X-ray binary systems consisting of a neutron star accreting material from a red giant donor star via stellar wind or Roche lobe overflow. Only a few confirmed members are currently known; 4U 1700+24 is a good candidate as it is a relatively bright X-ray object, possibly associated with the late-type star V934 Her. We analysed the archive {\it XMM}-Newton and Swift/XRT observations of 4U 1700+24 in order to have a uniform high-energy ($0.3-10$ keV) view of the source. We confirmed the existence of a red-shifted O VIII Ly-$\alpha$ transition (already observed in the 2002 {\it XMM}-Newton data) in the high-resolution spectra collected via the RGS instruments. The red-shift of the line is found in all the analysed observations and, on average, it was estimated to be $\simeq 0.009$. We also observed a modulation of the centroid energy of the line on short time scales (a few days) and discuss the observations in the framework of different scenarios. If the modulation is due to the gravitational red-shift of the neutron star, it might arise from a sudden re-organization of the emitting $X$-ray matter on the scale of a few hundreds of km. Alternatively, we are witnessing a uni-polar jet of matter (with typical velocity of $1000-4000$ km s$^{-1}$) possibly emitted by the neutron star in an almost face-on system. The second possibility seems to be required by the apparent lack of any modulation in the observed $X$-ray light curve. We also note also that the low-resolution spectra (both {\it XMM}-Newton and Swift/XRT in the $0.3-10$ keV band) show the existence of a black body radiation emitted by a region (possibly associated with the neutron star polar cap) with typical size from a few tens to hundreds of meters. The size of this spot-like region reduces as the overall luminosity of 4U 1700+24 decreases., Comment: In press on A&A

There are different methods for finding exoplanets such as radial spectral shifts, astrometrical measurements, transits, timing etc. Gravitational microlensing (including pixel-lensing) is among the most promising techniques with the potentiality of detecting Earth-like planets at distances about a few astronomical units from their host star or near the so-called snow line with a temperature in the range $0-100^0$ C on a solid surface of an exoplanet. We emphasize the importance of polarization measurements which can help to resolve degeneracies in theoretical models. The light received by source stars in microlensing events may be significantly polarized if both an efficient photon scattering mechanism is active in the source stellar atmosphere and a differential magnification is therein induced by the lensing system. The best candidate events for observing polarization are highly magnified events with source stars belonging to the class of cool, giant stars {in which the stellar light is polarized by photon scattering on dust grains contained in their envelopes. The presence in the stellar atmosphere of an internal cavity devoid of dust produces polarization profiles with a two peaks structure. Hence, the time interval between them gives an important observable quantity directly related to the size of the internal cavity and to the model parameters of the lens system.} We show that {during a microlensing event} the expected polarization variability can solve an ambiguity, that arises in some cases, related to the binary or planetary lensing interpretation of the perturbations observed near the maximum of the event light-curve. We consider a specific event case for which the parameter values corresponding to the two solutions are given. Then, assuming a polarization model for the source star, we compute the two expected polarization profiles. Gravitational microlensing, in case of relevant finite source size effects, provides an unique tool for the study of stellar atmospheres through the enhancement of a characteristic polarization signal. We report the results of a deep archive XMM-Newton observation of the Fornax spheroidal galaxy that we analyzed with the aim of fully characterizing the X-ray source population (in most of the cases likely to be background active galactic nuclei) detected towards the target. A cross correlation with the available databases allowed us to find a source that may be associated with a variable star belonging to the galaxy. We also searched for X-ray sources in the vicinity of the Fornax globular clusters GC 3 and GC 4 and found two sources probably associated with the respective clusters. The deep X-ray observation was also suitable for the search of the intermediate-mass black hole (of mass $\simeq 10^{4}$ M$_{\odot}$) expected to be hosted in the center of the galaxy. In the case of Fornax, this search is extremely difficult since the galaxy centroid of gravity is poorly constrained because of the large asymmetry observed in the optical surface brightness. Since we cannot firmly establish the existence of an X-ray counterpart of the putative black hole, we put constraints only on the accretion parameters. Gravitational microlensing, when finite size source effects are relevant, provides an unique tool for the study of source star stellar atmospheres through an enhancement of a characteristic polarization signal. This is due to the differential magnification induced during the crossing of the source star. In this paper we consider a specific set of reported highly magnified, both single and binary exoplanetary systems, microlensing events towards the Galactic bulge and evaluate the expected polarization signal. To this purpose, we consider several polarization models which apply to different types of source stars: hot, late type main sequence and cool giants. As a result we compute the polarization signal P,which goes up to P=0.04% for late type stars and up to a few percent for cool giants, depending on the underlying physical polarization processes and atmosphere model parameters. Given a I band magnitude at maximum magnification of about 12, and a typical duration of the polarization signal up to 1 day, we conclude that the currently available technology, in particular the polarimeter in FORS2 on the VLT, potentially may allow the detection of such signals. This observational programme may take advantage of the currently available surveys plus follow up strategy already routinely used for microlensing monitoring towards the Galactic bulge (aimed at the detection of exoplanets). IGRJ17361-4441 is a hard transient recently observed by the INTEGRAL satellite. The source, close to the center of gravity of the globular cluster NGC 6388, quickly became the target of follow-up observations conducted by the Chandra, Swift/XRT and RXTE observatories. Here, we concentrate in particular on a set of observations conducted by the XMM-Newton satellite during two slews, in order to get the spectral information of the source and search for spectral variations. The spectral parameters determined by the recent XMM-Newton slew observations were compared to the previously known results. The maximum unabsorbed $X$-ray flux in the 0.5-10 keV band as detected by the XMM-Newton slew observations is $\simeq 4.5\times 10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, i.e. consistent with that observed by the Swift/XRT satellite 15 days earlier. The spectrum seems to be marginally consistent ($\Gamma\simeq 0.93-1.63$) with that derived from the previous high energy observation., Comment: Accepted for publication on New Astronomy, 2012. Baryons constitute about 4% of our universe, but most of them are missing and we do not know where and in what form they are hidden. This constitute the so-called missing baryon problem. A possibility is that part of these baryons are hidden in galactic halos. We show how the 7-year data obtained by the WMAP satellite may be used to trace the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31. We detect a temperature asymmetry in the M31 halo along the rotation direction up to about 120 kpc. Data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) had a profound impact on the understanding of a variety of physical processes in the early phases of the Universe and on the estimation of the cosmological parameters. Here, the 7-year WMAP data are used to trace the disk and the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31. We analyzed the temperature excess in three WMAP bands (W, V, and Q) by dividing the region of the sky around M31 into several concentric circular areas. We studied the robustness of the detected temperature excess by considering 500 random control fields in the real WMAP maps and simulating 500 sky maps from the best-fitted cosmological parameters. By comparing the obtained temperature contrast profiles with the real ones towards the M31 galaxy, we find that the temperature asymmetry in the M31 disk is fairly robust, while the effect in the halo is weaker. An asymmetry in the mean microwave temperature in the M31 disk along the direction of the M31 rotation is observed with a temperature contrast up to about 130 microK/pixel. We also find a temperature asymmetry in the M31 halo, which is much weaker than for the disk, up to a galactocentric distance of about 10 degrees (120 kpc) with a peak temperature contrast of about 40 microK/pixel. Although the confidence level of the signal is not high, if estimated purely statistically, which could be expected due to the weakness of the effect, the geometrical structure of the temperature asymmetry points towards a definite effect modulated by the rotation of the M31 halo. We present an updated analysis of the M31 pixel lensing candidate event OAB-N2 previously reported in Calchi Novati et al. (2009). Here we take advantage of new data both astrometric and photometric. Astrometry: using archival 4m-KPNO and HST/WFPC2 data we perform a detailed analysis on the event source whose result, although not fully conclusive on the source magnitude determination, is confirmed by the following light curve photometry analysis. Photometry: first, unpublished WeCAPP data allows us to confirm OAB-N2, previously reported only as a viable candidate, as a well constrained pixel lensing event. Second, this photometry enables a detailed analysis in the event parameter space including the effects due to finite source size. The combined results of these analyses allow us to put a strong lower limit on the lens proper motion. A cataclysmic variable is a binary system consisting of a white dwarf that accretes material from a secondary object via the Roche-lobe mechanism. In the case of long enough observation, a detailed temporal analysis can be performed, allowing the physical properties of the binary system to be determined. We present an XMM-Newton observation of the dwarf nova HT Cas acquired to resolve the binary system eclipses and constrain the origin of the X-rays observed. We also compare our results with previous ROSAT and ASCA data. After the spectral analysis of the three EPIC camera signals, the observed X-ray light curve was studied with well known techniques and the eclipse contact points obtained. The X-ray spectrum can be described by thermal bremsstrahlung of temperature $kT_1=6.89 \pm 0.23$ keV plus a black-body component (upper limit) with temperature $kT_2=30_{-6}^{+8}$ eV. Neglecting the black-body, the bolometric absorption corrected flux is $F^{\rm{Bol}}=(6.5\pm 0.1)\times10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, which, for a distance of HT Cas of 131 pc, corresponds to a bolometric luminosity of $(1.33\pm 0.02)\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The study of the eclipse in the EPIC light curve permits us to constrain the size and location of the X-ray emitting region, which turns out to be close to the white dwarf radius. We measure an X-ray eclipse somewhat smaller (but only at a level of $\simeq 1.5 \sigma$) than the corresponding optical one. If this is the case, we have possibly identified the signature of either high latitude emission or a layer of X-ray emitting material partially obscured by an accretion disk., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2009

We study the possibility to detect extrasolar planets in M31 through pixel-lensing observations. Using a Monte Carlo approach, we select the physical parameters of the binary lens system, a star hosting a planet, and we calculate the pixel-lensing light curve taking into account the finite source effects. Indeed, their inclusion is crucial since the sources in M31 microlensing events are mainly giant stars. Light curves with detectable planetary features are selected by looking for significant deviations from the corresponding Paczy\'{n}ski shapes. We find that the time scale of planetary deviations in light curves increase (up to 3-4 days) as the source size increases. This means that only few exposures per day, depending also on the required accuracy, may be sufficient to reveal in the light curve a planetary companion. Although the mean planet mass for the selected events is about $2 M_{\rm {Jupiter}}$, even small mass planets ($M_{\rm P} < 20 M_{\oplus}$) can cause significant deviations, at least in the observations with large telescopes. However, even in the former case, the probability to find detectable planetary features in pixel-lensing light curves is at most a few percent of the detectable events, and therefore many events have to be collected in order to detect an extrasolar planet in M31. Microlensing observations towards M31 are a powerful tool for the study of the dark matter population in the form of MACHOs both in the Galaxy and the M31 halos, a still unresolved issue, as well as for the analysis of the characteristics of the M31 luminous populations. In this work we present the second year results of our pixel lensing campaign carried out towards M31 using the 152 cm Cassini telescope in Loiano. We have established an automatic pipeline for the detection and the characterisation of microlensing variations. We have carried out a complete simulation of the experiment and evaluated the expected signal, including an analysis of the efficiency of our pipeline. As a result, we select 1-2 candidate microlensing events (according to different selection criteria). This output is in agreement with the expected rate of M31 self-lensing events. The binaries known as cataclysmic variables are particular binary systems in which the primary star (a white dwarf) accretes material from a secondary via Roche-lobe mechanism. Usually, these objects have orbital period of a few hours so that a detailed temporal analysis can be performed. Here, we present Chandra ${\it XMM}$-Newton observations of a dwarf nova candidate identified in the past by optical observations towards the galactic Bulge and labeled as MACHO 104.20906.960. After a spectral analysis, we used the Lomb-Scargle technique for the period search and evaluated the confidence level using Monte-Carlo simulations. In this case, we found that the $X$-ray source shows a period of $2.03_{-0.07}^{+0.09} $ hours (3$\sigma$ error) so that it is most likely a system of interacting objects. The modulation of the signal was found with a confidence level of $>$99%. The spectrum can be described by a two thermal plasma components with X-ray flux in the 0.3--10 keV energy band of $1.77_{-0.19}^{+0.16}\times10^{-13}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The emission of gravitational waves from a system of massive objects interacting on hyperbolic orbits is studied in the quadrupole approximation. Analytic expressions are derived for the gravitational radiation luminosity, the total energy output and the gravitational radiation amplitude. An estimation of the expected number of events towards different targets (i.e. globular clusters and the center of the Galaxy) is also given. By studying the optical brightness surface density of the globular cluster NGC 6388, it has been recently proposed that it harbors a central intermediate-mass black hole with mass $\simeq 5.7\times 10^3$ M$_{\odot}$. We expect that the compact object in the center of NGC 6388 emits radiation in the $X$-ray band as a consequence of the accretion from the surrounding matter. We searched for $XMM$-Newton and $Chandra$ observations towards NGC 6388 to test this hypothesis. The $Chandra$ satellite disentangles several point-like $X$-ray sources, probably low mass $X$-ray binaries, well within the core radius of the globular cluster. However, three of them, coinciding with the cluster center of gravity, remain unresolved. Their total luminosity is $L_X^{Obs}\simeq 2.7\times 10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. If one of these sources is the $X$-ray counterpart of the intermediate-mass black hole in NGC 6388, the corresponding upper limit on the accretion efficiency, with respect to the Eddington luminosity, is $3\times 10^{-9}$.
