Abstract

In this work, we review the figures used to characterize an epidemic outbreak most. Particular attention is drawn to epidemic spreading at time-varying transition rates. A time-varying SIR-like model is used to describe the epidemic dynamics, from which closed equations relating parameters and key quantities like reproduction ratio and doubling time are derived. The definition and computation of these metrics are revisited in the context of the general solution to the time-varying model dynamics, focusing on the similarities and differences with the time-invariant case. Further, the prediction of these metrics, that is of the disease evolution, as response to different scenarios is also investigated.

Abstract

The problem of exactly differentiating a signal with bounded second derivative is considered. A class of differentiators is proposed, which converge to the derivative of such a signal within a fixed, i.e., a finite and uniformly bounded convergence time. A tuning procedure is derived that allows to assign an arbitrary, predefined upper bound for this convergence time. It is furthermore shown that this bound can be made arbitrarily tight by appropriate tuning. The usefulness of the procedure is demonstrated by applying it to the well-known uniform robust exact differentiator, which is included in the considered class of differentiators as a special case.

7. Design of a Novel Very-Low Input Capacitance High-Bandwidth Buffer for a Biomass Sensor

Abstract

In this work, a high-bandwidth very-low input capacitance original topology buffer was designed. The proposed buffer circuitry is conceived as part of a novel noninvasive nonimmersed real-time dielectric spectroscopy biomass sensor. Both a circuital-based simulation model and an experimental printed circuit board (PCB) prototype were implemented and successfully tested. The buffer effective parasitic input capacitance was lowered to a 2% of its original value by means of power supply bootstrapping. This improvement will allow performing differential voltage measurements with the required accuracy and without compromising the necessary bandwidth.

Abstract

The paper addresses the problem of output power regulation of fixed-pitch variable-speed wind energy conversion systems. Operation is constrained by practical reasons to the low-speed side of the turbine power--speed curve. Unfortunately, this region is characterized by a nonminimum phase dynamics which is an obstacle to perform the regulation task. A dynamical variable structure controller is developed that accomplishes the control objective despite this limitation. The proposed control strategy presents attractive features such as robustness to parametric uncertainties of the turbine and generator as well as to electric grid disturbances. Index Terms--Power generation control, variable structure systems, wind energy.

In the paper by Hodel and Hall, the authors introduce a variable-structure proportional-integral--derivative controller with antiwindup features and compare it with other simple antiwindup methods. It is pointed out here that the conclusions reached from the comparative example are incorrect as the performance of the controllers is not appropriately compared. Abstract

This paper concerns power regulation of variable-speed wind energy conversion systems. These systems have two regions of operation, depending on the tip speed ratio of the wind turbines. They are distinguished by a minimum phase behavior in one of these regions and a nonminimum phase one in the other. A sliding mode control strategy is proposed that assures stability in both regions of operation and imposes the ideally designed feedback control solution in spite of model uncertainties. Moreover, power regulation by the proposed sliding control in the minimum phase region is completely robust to wind disturbances and parameter uncertainties.
