Search

The transport of energy through convection is important during many stages of stellar evolution, and is best studied in our Sun or giant evolved stars. Features that are attributed to convection are found on the surface of massive red supergiant stars. Also for lower mass evolved stars, indications of convection are found, but convective timescales and sizes remain poorly constrained. Models indicate that convective motions are crucial for the production of strong winds that return the products of stellar nucleosynthesis into the interstellar medium. Here we report a series of reconstructed interferometric images of the surface of the evolved giant star R Doradus. The images reveal a stellar disc with prominent small scale features that provide the structure and motions of convection on the stellar surface. We find that the dominant structure size of the features on the stellar disc is $0.72\pm0.05$ astronomical units (au). We measure the velocity of the surface motions to vary between $-18$ and $+20$ km s$^{-1}$, which means the convective timescale is approximately one month. Binary interactions have been proposed to explain a variety of circumstellar structures seen around evolved stars, including asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and planetary nebulae. Studies resolving the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars have revealed spirals, discs and bipolar outflows, with shaping attributed to interactions with a companion. For the first time, we have used a combined chemical and dynamical analysis to reveal a highly eccentric and long-period orbit for W Aquilae, a binary system containing an AGB star and a main sequence companion. Our results are based on anisotropic SiN emission, the first detections of NS and SiC towards an S-type star, and density structures observed in the CO emission. These features are all interpreted as having formed during periastron interactions. Our purpose is to study the effect of binary companions located within the first 10 stellar radii from the primary AGB star. In this work, we target the mass-losing carbon star V Hydrae (V Hya), looking for signatures of its companion in the dust forming region of the atmosphere. The star was observed in the L- and N-bands with the VLTI/MATISSE instrument at low spectral resolution. We reconstructed images of V Hya's photosphere and surroundings using the two bands and compared our interferometric observables with VLTI/MIDI and VISIR archival data. To constrain the dust properties, we used DUSTY to model the spectral energy distribution. The star is dominated by dust emission in the L- and N- bands. The VISIR image confirms the presence of a large-scale dusty circumstellar envelope surrounding V Hya. The MATISSE reconstructed images show asymmetric and elongated structures in both infrared bands. In the L-band, we detected an elongated shape of approximately 15 mas, likely to be of photospheric origin. In the N-band, we found a 20 mas extension North-East from the star, and perpendicular to the L-band elongated axis. The position angle and the size of the N-band extension match the prediction of the companion position at MATISSE epoch. By comparing MATISSE N-band with MIDI data, we deduce that the elongation axis in the N-band has rotated since the previous interferometric measurements 13 years ago, supporting the idea that the particle enhancement is related to the dusty clump moving along with the companion. The MATISSE images unveil the presence of a dust enhancement at the companion position, opening new doors for further analysis on the binary interaction with an AGB component., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Aims. We aim to resolve the spatial and kinematic sub-structures in five detached-shell sources to provide detailed constraints for hydrodynamic models that describe the formation and evolution of the shells. Methods. We use observations of the 12 CO (1-0) emission towards five carbon-AGB stars with ALMA. The data have angular resolutions of 0.3 arcsec to 1arcsec and a velocity resolution of 0.3 km/s . This enables us to quantify spatial and kinematic structures in the shells. Results. The observed emission is separated into two distinct components: a more coherent, bright outer shell and a more filamentary, fainter inner shell. The kinematic information shows that the inner sub-shells move at a higher velocity relative to the outer sub-shells. The observed sub-structures confirm the predictions from hydrodynamical models. However, the models do not predict a double-shell structure, and the CO emission likely only traces the inner and outer edges of the shell, implying a lack of CO in the middle layers of the detached shell. Previous estimates of the masses and temperatures are consistent with originating mainly from the brighter subshell, but the total shell masses are likely lower limits. Conclusions. The observed spatial and kinematical splittings of the shells appear consistent with results from hydrodynamical models, provided the CO emission does not trace the H2 density distribution in the shell but rather traces the edges of the shells. It is therefore not possible to constrain the total shell mass based on the CO observations alone. The mass loss experienced on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) at the end of the lives of low- and intermediate-mass stars is widely accepted to rely on radiation pressure acting on dust grains formed in the extended AGB atmospheres. The interaction of convection, stellar pulsation, and heating and cooling processes cause the density, velocity and temperature distributions in the inner regions of the envelope to be complex, making the dust-formation process difficult to calculate. Hence, characterising the extended atmospheres and inner outflow empirically is paramount to advance our understanding of the dust-formation and wind-driving processes. To this end, we observe the AGB star R Dor using ALMA and modelled the $^{12}$CO $v=0, J=2-1$, $v=1, J=2-1$ and $3-2$ and $^{13}$CO $v=0, J=3-2$ lines using the 3D radiative transfer code LIME up to a distance of $\sim 4$ times the radius of the star at sub-mm wavelengths. We find a complex velocity field with structure down to scales at least equal to the resolution of the observations. The observed maps are well reproduced assuming spherical symmetry for the gas temperature and density distributions. We find the radial profiles of these two quantities to be very steep close to the star and shallower for radii larger than $\sim 1.6$ times the stellar sub-mm radius. This change is consistent with the transition between extended atmosphere and outflow. We constrain the standard deviation of the stochastic velocity distribution in the large-scale outflow to be $\lesssim 0.4$ km/s. We observe two emission blobs in the CO $v=0, J=2-1$ line and find their gas densities and radial velocities to be substantially larger than those of the surrounding gas. Monitoring the evolution of these blobs will lead to a better understanding of the role of these structures in the mass-loss process of R Dor.

AGB stars are major contributors to the chemical enrichment of the ISM through nucleosynthesis and extensive mass loss. Most of our current knowledge of AGB atmospheric and circumstellar chemistry, in particular in a C-rich environment, is based on observations of the carbon star IRC+10216. We aim to obtain a more generalised understanding of the chemistry in C-rich AGB CSEs by studying a sample of three carbon stars, IRAS15194-5115, IRAS15082-4808, and IRAS07454-7112, and test the archetypal status often attributed to IRC+10216. We performed spatially resolved, unbiased spectral surveys in ALMA Band 3. We identify a total of 132 rotational transitions from 49 molecular species. There are two main morphologies of the brightness distributions: centrally-peaked (e.g. HCN) and shell-like (e.g. C$_2$H). We estimated the sizes of the molecular emitting regions using azimuthally-averaged radial profiles of the line brightness distributions, and derived abundance estimates. Of the shell distributions, the cyanopolyynes peak at slightly smaller radii than the hydrocarbons, and CN and HNC show the most extended emission. The emitting regions for each species are the smallest for IRAS07454-7112. We find that, within the uncertainties of the analysis, the three stars present similar abundances for most species, also compared to IRC+10216. We find that SiO is more abundant in our three stars compared to IRC+10216. Our estimated isotopic ratios match well the literature values for the sources. The observed circumstellar chemistry appears very similar across our sample and compared to that of IRC+10216, both in terms of the relative location of the emitting regions and molecular abundances. This implies that, to a first approximation, the chemical models tailored to IRC+10216 are able to reproduce the observed chemistry in C-rich envelopes across roughly an order of magnitude in wind density., Comment: 21 pages. 13 figures and 8 tables in the main text. 5 appendices contain additional figures and tables. Estimating the distances to asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars using optical measurements of their parallaxes is not straightforward because of the large uncertainties introduced by their dusty envelopes, their large angular sizes, and their surface brightness variability. We compared the parallaxes from Gaia DR3 with parallaxes measured with maser observations with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to determine a statistical correction factor for the DR3 parallaxes using a sub-sample of 33 maser-emitting oxygen-rich nearby AGB stars. We found that the nominal errors on the Gaia DR3 parallaxes are underestimated by a factor of 5.44 for the brightest sources ($G<8$ mag). Fainter sources ($8\leq G<12$) require a lower parallax error inflation factor of 2.74. We obtain a Gaia DR3 parallax zero-point offset of -0.077 mas for bright AGB stars. The offset becomes more negative for fainter AGB stars. We calculated the distances of about 200 AGB stars in the DEATHSTAR project using a Bayesian statistical approach on the corrected DR3 parallaxes and a prior based on the previously determined Galactic distribution of AGB stars. We found that the derived Gaia distances are associated with significant, asymmetrical errors for more than 40% of the sources in our sample. We performed radiative transfer modelling of the stellar and dust emission to determine the luminosity of the sources in the VLBI sub-sample based on the distances derived from maser parallaxes, and derived a new bolometric period-luminosity relation for Galactic oxygen-rich Mira variables. A new distance catalogue based on these results is provided for the sources in the DEATHSTAR sample. We found that a RUWE (re-normalised unit weight error) below 1.4 does not guarantee reliable distance estimates and we advise against the use of only the RUWE to measure the quality of Gaia DR3 astrometric data for individual AGB stars., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 3 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A, corrected typos, distance catalogue available on the CDS (and any updates that may occur)

We aim to constrain the dust mass and grain sizes in the interaction regions between the stellar winds and the ISM around asymptotic giant branch stars. By describing the dust in these regions, we aim to shed light on the role of low mass evolved stars in the origin of dust in galaxies. We use images in the far-infrared at 70 micron and 160 micron to derive dust temperatures and dust masses in the wind-ISM interaction regions around a sample of carbon-rich and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The dust temperature and mass are determined in two ways. First directly from the data using the ratio of the measured fluxes and assuming opacities for dust with a constant grain size of 0.1 micron. We then perform 3D dust-radiative transfer models spatially constrained by the observations to consistently calculate the temperature and mass. For the radiative transfer models each model contains one constant grain size, which is varied between 0.01 micron to 5.0 micron. We find that the observed dust mass in the wind-ISM interaction regions is consistent with mass accumulated from the stellar winds. For the carbon-rich sources adding the spatial constraints in the radiative transfer models results in preferentially larger grain sizes (approx. 2 micron). For the oxygen-rich sources the spatial constraints result in too high temperatures in the models, making it impossible to fit the observed far-infrared ratio irrespective of the grain size used, indicating a more complex interplay of grain properties and the stellar radiation field. The results have implications for how likely it is for the grains to survive the transition into the ISM, and the properties of dust particles that later act as seeds for grain growth in the ISM. This overview paper presents ATOMIUM, a Large Programme in Cycle 6 with the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA). The goal of ATOMIUM is to understand the dynamics and the gas phase and dust formation chemistry in the winds of evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars. A more general aim is to identify chemical processes applicable to other astrophysical environments. 17 oxygen-rich AGB and RSG stars spanning a range in (circum)stellar parameters and evolutionary phases were observed in a homogeneous observing strategy allowing for an unambiguous comparison. Data were obtained between 213.83 and 269.71 GHz at high (0.025-0.050 arcsec), medium (0.13-0.24 arcsec), and low (about 1 arcsec) angular resolution. The sensitivity per 1.3 km/s channel was 1.5-5 mJy/beam. 13 molecules were designated as primary molecules in the survey: CO, SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, TiO2, HCN, SO, SO2, SiS, CS, H2O, and NaCl. The scientific motivation, survey design, sample properties, data reduction, and an overview of the data products are described; and we highlight one scientific result - the wind kinematics of the ATOMIUM sources. The ATOMIUM sources often have a slow wind acceleration, and a fraction of the gas reaches a velocity which can be up to a factor of two times larger than previously reported terminal velocities assuming isotropic expansion, and the wind kinematic profiles establish that the radial velocity described by the momentum equation for a spherical wind structure cannot capture the complexity of the velocity field. In 15 sources, some molecular transitions other than 12CO v=0 J=2-1 reach a higher outflow velocity, with a spatial emission zone that is often greater than 30 stellar radii, but much less than the extent of CO. Binary interaction with a (sub)stellar companion might (partly) explain the non-monotonic behaviour of the projected velocity field.

S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be intermediates in the evolution of oxygen- to carbon-rich AGB stars. The chemical compositions of their circumstellar envelopes are also intermediate, but have not been studied in as much detail as their carbon- and oxygen-rich counterparts. We aim to determine the abundances of AlCl and AlF from rotational lines, which have been observed for the first time towards an S-type AGB star, W Aql. In combination with models based on PACS observations, we aim to update our chemical kinetics network based on these results. We analyse ALMA observations towards W Aql of AlCl in the ground and first two vibrationally excited states and AlF in the ground vibrational state. Using radiative transfer models, we determine the abundances and spatial abundance distributions of Al$^{35}$Cl, Al$^{37}$Cl, and AlF. We also model HCl and HF emission and compare these models to PACS spectra to constrain the abundances of these species. AlCl is found in clumps very close to the star, with emission confined within 0.1$^{\prime\prime}$ of the star. AlF emission is more extended, with faint emission extending 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ to 0.6$^{\prime\prime}$ from the continuum peak. We find peak abundances, relative to H$_2$, of $1.7\times 10^{-7}$ for Al$^{35}$Cl, $7\times 10^{-8}$ for Al$^{37}$Cl and $1\times 10^{-7}$ for AlF. From the PACS spectra, we find abundances of $9.7\times 10^{-8}$ and $\leq 10^{-8}$, relative to H$_2$, for HCl and HF, respectively. The AlF abundance exceeds the solar F abundance, indicating that fluorine synthesised in the AGB star has already been dredged up to the surface of the star and ejected into the circumstellar envelope. From our analysis of chemical reactions in the wind, we conclude that AlF may participate in the dust formation process, but we cannot fully explain the rapid depletion of AlCl seen in the wind., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We aim to constrain the sizes of the CO circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of 16 S-type stars, along with an additional 7 and 4 CSEs of C-type and M-type AGB stars, respectively. We map the emission from the CO J=2-1 and 3-2 lines observed with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) and its total power (TP) antennas, and fit with a Gaussian distribution in the uv- and image planes for ACA-only and TP observations, respectively. The major axis of the fitted Gaussian for the CO(2-1) line data gives a first estimate of the size of the CO-line-emitting CSE. We investigate possible signs of deviation from spherical symmetry by analysing the line profiles, the results from visibility fitting, and by investigating the deconvolved images. The sizes of the CO-line-emitting CSEs of low-mass-loss-rate (low-MLR) S-stars fall between the sizes of the CSEs of C-stars, which are larger, and those of M-stars, which are smaller, as expected because of the differences in their respective CO abundances. The sizes of the low-MLR S-type stars show no dependence on circumstellar density, while a steeper density dependence is observed at high MLR. Furthermore, our results show that the CO CSEs of most of the S-stars in our sample are consistent with a spherically symmetric and smooth outflow. The CO envelope sizes obtained in this paper will be used to constrain detailed radiative transfer modelling to directly determine more accurate MLR estimates for the stars in our sample. For several of our sources that present signs of deviation from spherical symmetry, further high-resolution observations would be necessary to investigate the nature of, and the physical processes behind, these asymmetrical structures. The Origins Space Telescope (Origins) is one of four science and technology definition studies selected by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in preparation of the 2020 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal survey in the US. Origins will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. It is designed to answer three major science questions: How do galaxies form stars, make metals, and grow their central supermassive black holes from reionization? How do the conditions for habitability develop during the process of planet formation? Do planets orbiting M-dwarf stars support life? Binary interactions dominate the evolution of massive stars, but their role is less clear for low- and intermediate-mass stars. The evolution of a spherical wind from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star into a nonspherical planetary nebula (PN) could be due to binary interactions. We observed a sample of AGB stars with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and found that their winds exhibit distinct nonspherical geometries with morphological similarities to planetary nebulae (PNe). We infer that the same physics shapes both AGB winds and PNe; additionally, the morphology and AGB mass-loss rate are correlated. These characteristics can be explained by binary interaction. This is the first publication of the DEATHSTAR project. The goal of the project is to reduce the uncertainties of observational estimates of mass-loss rates from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. Line emission from 12CO J=2-1 and 3-2 were mapped using the ACA. In this initial analysis, the emission distribution was fit to a Gaussian distribution in the uv-plane. Detailed radiative transfer analysis will be presented in the future. The axes of the best-fit Gaussian at the line center of the 12CO J=2-1 emission gives a first indication of the size of the emitting region. Furthermore, the fitting results, such as the major and minor axis, center position, and the goodness of fit across both lines, constrain the symmetry of the emission distribution. We find that the CO envelope sizes are, in general, larger for C-type than for M-type AGB stars, which is expected if the CO/H2 ratio is larger in C-type stars. Furthermore, a relation between the 12CO J=2-1 size and circumstellar density is shown that, while in broad agreement with photodissociation calculations, reveals large scatter and systematic differences between the stellar types. The majority of the sources have CO envelopes that are consistent with a spherically symmetric, smooth outflow. For about a third of the sources, indications of strong asymmetries are found. This is consistent with previous interferometric investigations of northern sources. Smaller scale asymmetries are found in a larger fraction of sources. These results for CO envelope radii and shapes can be used to constrain detailed radiative transfer modeling of the same stars so as to determine mass-loss rates that are independent of photodissociation models. W Aql is an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star with an atmospheric elemental abundance ratio C/O$\approx$0.98 and reported circumstellar molecular abundances intermediate between those of M-type (C/O$<$1) and C-type (C/O$>$1) AGB stars. This intermediate status is considered typical for S-type stars, although our understanding of the chemical content of their circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) is currently rather limited. We performed observations in the frequency range 159-268 GHz with the APEX telescope and make abundance estimates through comparison to available spectra towards some well-studied AGB stars and based on rotational diagram analysis in the case of SiC2. We conclude that W Aql's CSE appears considerably closer to that of a C-type AGB star than to that of an M-type AGB star. In particular, we detect emission from C2H, SiC2, SiN, and HC3N, molecules previously only detected towards the CSEs of C-type stars. This conclusion, based on the chemistry of the gaseous component of the CSE, is further supported by reports in the literature on the presence of atmospheric molecular bands and spectral features of dust species typical for C-type AGB stars. Although our observations mainly trace species in the outer regions of the CSE, our conclusion matches closely that based on recent chemical equilibrium models for the inner wind of S-type stars: the atmospheric and circumstellar chemistry of S-type stars likely resembles that of C-type AGB stars much more closely than that of M-type AGB stars. Further observational investigation of the gaseous circumstellar chemistry of S-type stars is required to characterise its dependence on the atmospheric C/O. Isotopologue line intensity ratios of circumstellar molecules have been widely used to trace the photospheric elemental isotopic ratios of evolved stars. However, depending on the molecular species and the physical conditions of the environment, the circumstellar isotopologue ratio may deviate considerably from the stellar atmospheric value. In this paper, we aim to examine how the CO and HCN abundance ratios vary radially due to chemical reactions in the outflows of AGB stars and the effect of excitation and optical depth on the resulting line intensity ratios. We find that the circumstellar 12CO/13CO can deviate from its atmospheric value by up to 25-94% and 6-60% for C- and O-type CSEs, respectively. We show that variations of the intensity of the ISRF and the gas kinetic temperature can significantly influence the CO isotopologue ratio in the outer CSEs. On the contrary, the H12CN/H13CN ratio is stable for all tested mass-loss rates. The RT modeling shows that the integrated line intensity ratio of CO of different rotational transitions varies significantly for stars with intermediate mass-loss rates due to combined chemical and excitation effects. In contrast, the excitation conditions for the both HCN isotopologues are the same. We demonstrate the importance of using the isotopologue abundance profiles from chemical models as inputs to RT models in the interpretation of isotopologue observations. Previous studies of CO isotopologue ratios are based on multi-transition data for individual sources and it is difficult to estimate the errors in the reported values due to assumptions that are not entirely correct according to this study. If anything, previous studies may have overestimated the circumstellar 12CO/13CO abundance ratio. The use of the HCN as a tracer of C isotope ratios is affected by fewer complicating problems, provided one accounts corrections for high optical depths., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Stars with initial masses between $\sim0.8$ and 8~$M_\odot$ present copious mass loss during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) at the end of their lives. The accepted mass-loss mechanism requires radiation pressure acting on dust grains that form in the extended AGB stellar atmospheres. The details of this process are not yet well understood, however. Using the extreme-adaptive-optics imager and polarimeter SPHERE/ZIMPOL, we observed light polarised by grains around W\,Hya, SW\,Vir, and R\,Crt, which have mass-loss rates between 10$^{-7}$ and 10$^{-6}~M_\odot~{\rm yr^{-1}}$. We find the distribution of dust to be asymmetric around the three targets. A biconical morphology is seen for R Crt, with a position angle that is very similar to those inferred from interferometric observations of maser emission and of mid-infrared continuum emission. The cause of the biconical outflow cannot be directly inferred from the ZIMPOL data. The dust grains polarise light more efficiently at 0.65~$\mu$m for R\,Crt and SW\,Vir and at 0.82~$\mu$m for W\,Hya. This indicates that at the time of the observations, the grains around SW\,Vir and R\,Crt had sizes $< 0.1~\mu$m, while those around W\,Hya were larger, with sizes $\gtrsim 0.1~\mu$m. The asymmetric distribution of dust around R\,Crt makes the interpretation more uncertain for this star, however. We find that polarised light is produced already from within the visible photosphere of W~Hya, which we reproduce using models with an inner dust shell that is optically thick to scattering. The radial profile of the polarised light observed around W\,Hya reveal a steep dust density profile. The Origins Space Telescope (Origins) traces our cosmic history, from the formation of the first galaxies and the rise of metals to the development of habitable worlds and present-day life. Origins does this through exquisite sensitivity to infrared radiation from ions, atoms, molecules, dust, water vapor and ice, and observations of extra-solar planetary atmospheres, protoplanetary disks, and large-area extragalactic fields. Origins operates in the wavelength range 2.8 to 588 microns and is 1000 times more sensitive than its predecessors due to its large, cold (4.5 K) telescope and advanced instruments. Origins was one of four large missions studied by the community with support from NASA and industry in preparation for the 2020 Decadal Survey in Astrophysics. The AGB star $\pi^{1}$ Gruis has a known companion (at a separation of ~400 AU) which cannot explain the strong deviations from the spherical symmetry of the CSE. Recently, hydrodynamic simulations of mass transfer in closer binary systems have successfully reproduced the spiral-shaped CSEs found around a handful of sources. There is growing evidence for an even closer, undetected companion complicating the case of $\pi^{1}$ Gruis further. The improved spatial resolution allows for the investigation of the complex circumstellar morphology and the search for imprints on the CSE of the third component. We have observed the 12CO J=3-2 line emission from $\pi^{1}$ Gruis using both the compact and extended array of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The interferometric data has furthermore been combined with data from the ALMA total power (TP) array. The imaged brightness distribution has been used to constrain a non-local, non-LTE 3D radiative transfer model of the CSE. The high-angular resolution ALMA data have revealed the first example of a source on the AGB where both a faster bipolar outflow and a spiral pattern along the orbital plane can be seen in the gas envelope. The spiral can be traced in the low- to intermediate velocity, from 13 to 25 km s$^{-1}$, equatorial torus. The largest spiral-arm separation is $\approx$5".5 and consistent with a companion with an orbital period of $\approx$330 yrs and a separation of less than 70 AU. The kinematics of the bipolar outflow is consistent with it being created during a mass-loss eruption where the mass-loss rate from the system increased by at least a factor of 5 during 10-15 yrs. Models of the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium, galaxies, and the Universe rely on our understanding of the amounts and chemical composition of the material returned by stars and supernovae. Stellar yields are obtained from stellar-evolution models, which currently lack predictive prescriptions of stellar mass loss, although it significantly affects stellar lifetimes, nucleosynthesis, and chemical ejecta. Galaxy properties are derived from observations of the integrated light of bright member stars. Stars in the late stages of their evolution are among the infrared-brightest objects in galaxies. An unrealistic treatment of the mass-loss process introduces significant uncertainties in galaxy properties derived from their integrated light. We report the detection and investigate the properties of high-excitation lambda-doubling line emission of hydroxyl (OH) detected towards three asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau) using ALMA. The OH lines are produced very close to the central stars and seem optically thin and with no maser effect. We analyse the molecular excitation using population diagrams and find rotational temperatures of $\sim 2500$ K and column densities of $\sim 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ for both W Hya and R Dor. For W Hya, we observe emission from vibrationally excited H2O arising from the same region as the OH emission. Moreover, CO $v = 1; J = 3 - 2$ emission also shows a brightness peak in the same region. Considering optically thin emission and the rotational temperature derived for OH, we find a CO column density $\sim 15$ times higher than that of OH, within an area of ($92 \times 84$) mas$^2$ centred on the OH emission peak. These results should be considered tentative because of the simple methods employed. The observed OH line frequencies differ significantly from the predicted transition frequencies in the literature, and provide the possibility of using OH lines observed in AGB stars to improve the accuracy of the Hamiltonian used for the OH molecule. We predict stronger OH lambda-doubling lines at millimetre wavelengths than those we detected. These lines will be a good probe of shocked gas in the extended atmosphere and are possibly even suitable as probes of the magnetic field in the atmospheres of close-by AGB stars through the Zeeman effect., Comment: Published in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

The outflows of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be driven by radiation pressure by photon scattering on grains with sizes of tenths of microns. The details of the formation of dust in the extended atmospheres of these stars and the mass-loss process is still not well understood. We obtained quasi-simultaneous observations of the AGB star Mira using ALMA and ZIMPOL to probe the distribution of gas and large dust grains, respectively. The polarized light images show dust around Mira~A, the companion (Mira~B) and in a trail that connects the two sources. ALMA reveals that dust around Mira~A is contained in a high-gas-density region with a significant fraction of the polarized light arising from its edge. We constrained the gas density, temperature, and velocity within a few stellar radii from the star by modelling the CO $v=1, J=3-2$ line. We find a mass $(\sim 3.8 \pm 1.3) \times 10^{-4}~M_\odot$ to be contained between the stellar millimetre photosphere, $R^{\rm 338~GHz}_\star$, and $4~R^{\rm 338~GHz}_\star$. Our best-fit models with lower masses also reproduce the $^{13}$CO $v=0, J=3-2$ line emission from this region. We find TiO$_2$ and AlO abundances corresponding to 4.5% and $< 0.1$% of the total titanium and aluminium expected for a solar-composition gas. The low abundance of AlO allows for efficient Al depletion into dust already very close to the star, as expected from thermal dust emission observations and theoretical calculations of Mira variables. We constrain the presence of aluminium oxide grains based on the scattered light observations and our gas-phase model. We find that aluminium oxide grains can account for a significant fraction of the total aluminium atoms in this region only if the grains have sizes $\lesssim 0.02~\mu$m. Understanding the properties of dust produced during the asymptotic giant branch phase of stellar evolution is important for understanding the evolution of stars and galaxies. Recent observations of the carbon AGB star R Scl have shown that observations at far-infrared and submillimetre wavelengths can effectively constrain the grain sizes in the shell, while the total mass depends on the structure of the grains (solid vs. hollow or fluffy). We aim to constrain the properties of the dust observed in the submillimetre in the detached shells around the three carbon AGB stars U Ant, DR Ser, and V644 Sco, and to investigate the constraints on the dust masses and grain sizes provided by far-infrared and submm observations. We observed the carbon AGB stars U Ant, DR Ser, and V644 Sco at 870 micron using LABOCA on APEX. Combined with observations from the optical to far-infrared, we produced dust radiative transfer models of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with contributions from the stars, present-day mass-loss and detached shells. We tested the effect of different total dust masses and grain sizes on the SED, and attempted to consistently reproduce the SEDs from the optical to the submm. We derive dust masses in the shells of a few 10e-5 Msun, assuming spherical, solid grains. The best-fit grain radii are comparatively large, and indicate the presence of grains between 0.1 micron-2 micron. The LABOCA observations suffer from contamination from 12CO(3-2), and hence gives fluxes that are higher than the predicted dust emission at submm wavelengths. We investigate the effect on the best-fitting models by assuming different degrees of contamination and show that far-infrared and submillimetre observations are important to constrain the dust mass and grain sizes in the shells., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We surveyed 20 AGB stars of different chemical types using the APEX telescope, and combined this with an IRAM 30 m and APEX survey of CS and SiS emission towards over 30 S-type stars. For those stars with detections, we performed radiative transfer modelling to determine abundances and abundance distributions. We detect CS towards all the surveyed carbon stars, some S-type stars, and the highest mass-loss rate oxygen-rich stars ($> 5\times 10^{-6}$ Msol yr$^{-1}$). SiS is detected towards the highest mass-loss rate sources of all chemical types ($> 8\times 10^{-7}$ Msol yr$^{-1}$). We find CS peak fractional abundances ranging from ~ $ 4\times 10^{-7}$ to ~ $2\times 10^{-5}$ for the carbon stars, from ~ $ 3\times 10^{-8}$ to ~ $1\times 10^{-7}$ for the oxygen-rich stars and from ~ $ 1\times 10^{-7}$ to ~ $8\times 10^{-6}$ for the S-type stars. We find SiS peak fractional abundances ranging from ~ $ 9\times 10^{-6}$ to ~ $ 2\times 10^{-5}$ for the carbon stars, from ~ $ 5\times 10^{-7}$ to ~ $ 2\times 10^{-6}$ for the oxygen-rich stars, and from ~ $ 2\times 10^{-7}$ to ~ $ 2\times 10^{-6}$ for the S-type stars. We derived Si$^{32}$S/Si$^{34}$S = 11.4 for AI Vol, the only star for which we had a reliable isotopologue detection. Overall, we find that wind density plays an important role in determining the chemical composition of AGB CSEs. It is seen that for oxygen-rich AGB stars both CS and SiS are detected only in the highest density circumstellar envelopes and their abundances are generally lower than for carbon-rich AGB stars by around an order of magnitude. For carbon-rich and S-type stars SiS was also only detected in the highest density circumstellar envelopes, while CS was detected consistently in all surveyed carbon stars and sporadically among the S-type stars.

We present the detection of neutral atomic carbon CI(3 P1 - 3 P0 ) line emission towards omi Cet. This is the first time that CI is detected in the envelope around an oxygen-rich M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. We also confirm the previously tentative CI detection around V Hya, a carbon-rich AGB star. As one of the main photodissociation products of parent species in the circumstellar envelope (CSE) around evolved stars, CI can be used to trace sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in CSEs. The observed flux density towards omi Cet can be reproduced by a shell with a peak atomic fractional abundance of $2.4 \times 10^{-5}$ predicted based on a simple chemical model where CO is dissociated by the interstellar radiation field. However, the CI emission is shifted by $\sim$ 4 km/s from the stellar velocity. Based on this velocity shift, we suggest that the detected CI emission towards omi Cet potentially arises from a compact region near its hot binary companion. The velocity shift could, therefore, be the result of the orbital velocity of the binary companion around omi Cet. In this case, the CI column density is estimated to be $1.1 \times 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$. This would imply that strong UV radiation from the companion and/or accretion of matter between two stars is most likely the origin of the CI enhancement. However, this hypothesis can be confirmed by high-angular resolution observations.

High resolution observations of the extended atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can now directly confront the theories that describe stellar mass loss. Using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high angular resolution ($30\times42$~mas) observations we have, for the first time, resolved stellar rotation of an AGB star, R~Dor. We measure an angular rotation velocity of $\omega_R\sin{i}=(3.5\pm0.3)\times10^{-9}$~rad~s$^{-1}$ which indicates a rotational velocity of $|\upsilon_{\rm rot}\sin{i}|=1.0\pm0.1$~km~s$^{-1}$ at the stellar surface ($R_*=31.2$~mas at $214$~GHz). The rotation axis projected on the plane of the sky has a position angle $\Phi=7\pm6^\circ$. We find that the rotation of R Dor is two orders of magnitude faster than expected for a solitary AGB star that will have lost most of its angular momentum. Its rotational velocity is consistent with angular momentum transfer from a close companion. As a companion has not been directly detected we thus suggest R~Dor has a low-mass, close-in, companion. The rotational velocity approaches the critical velocity, set by the local sound speed in the extended envelope, and is thus expected to affect the mass loss characteristics of R~Dor., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Our current insights into the circumstellar chemistry of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are largely based on studies of carbon-rich stars and stars with high mass-loss rates. In order to expand the current molecular inventory of evolved stars we present a spectral scan of the nearby, oxygen-rich star R Dor, a star with a low mass-loss rate ($\sim2\times10^{-7}M_{\odot}$/yr). We carried out a spectral scan in the frequency ranges 159.0-321.5GHz and 338.5-368.5 GHz (wavelength range 0.8-1.9mm) using the SEPIA/Band-5 and SHeFI instruments on the APEX telescope and we compare it to previous surveys, including one of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK Tau, which has a high mass-loss rate ($\sim5\times10^{-6}M_{\odot}$/yr). The spectrum of R Dor is dominated by emission lines of SO$_2$ and the different isotopologues of SiO. We also detect CO, H$_2$O, HCN, CN, PO, PN, SO, and tentatively TiO$_2$, AlO, and NaCl. Sixteen out of approximately 320 spectral features remain unidentified. Among these is a strong but previously unknown maser at 354.2 GHz, which we suggest could pertain to H$_2$SiO, silanone. With the exception of one, none of these unidentified lines are found in a similarly sensitive survey of IK Tau performed with the IRAM 30m telescope. We present radiative transfer models for five isotopologues of SiO ($^{28}$SiO, $^{29}$SiO, $^{30}$SiO, Si$^{17}$O, Si$^{18}$O), providing constraints on their fractional abundance and radial extent. We derive isotopic ratios for C, O, Si, and S and estimate that R Dor likely had an initial mass in the range 1.3-1.6$M_{\odot}$, in agreement with earlier findings based on models of H$_2$O line emission. From the presence of spectral features recurring in many of the measured thermal and maser emission lines we tentatively identify up to five kinematical components in the outflow of R Dor, indicating deviations from a smooth, spherical wind., Comment: 66 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Context: We describe the new SEPIA (Swedish-ESO PI Instrument for APEX) receiver, which was designed and built by the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) in collaboration with ESO. It was installed and commissioned at the APEX telescope during 2015 with an ALMA Band 5 receiver channel and updated with a new frequency channel (ALMA Band 9) in February 2016. Aims: This manuscript aims to provide, for observers who use the SEPIA receiver, a reference in terms of the hardware description, optics and performance as well as the commissioning results. Methods: Out of three available receiver cartridge positions in SEPIA, the two current frequency channels, corresponding to ALMA Band 5, the RF band 158--211 GHz, and Band 9, the RF band 600--722 GHz, provide state-of-the-art dual polarization receivers. The Band 5 frequency channel uses 2SB SIS mixers with an average SSB noise temperature around 45K with IF (intermediate frequency) band 4--8 GHz for each sideband providing total 4x4 GHz IF band. The Band 9 frequency channel uses DSB SIS mixers with a noise temperature of 75--125K with IF band 4--12 GHz for each polarization. For the carbon AGB star R Sculptoris, the uncertain distance significantly affects the interpretation of observations regarding the evolution of the stellar mass loss during and after the most recent thermal pulse. We aim to provide a new, independent measurement of the distance to R Sculptoris, reducing the absolute uncertainty of the distance estimate to this source. R Scl is a semi-regular pulsating star, surrounded by a thin shell of dust and gas created during a thermal pulse approximately 2000 years ago. The stellar light is scattered by the dust particles in the shell at a radius of 19 arcsec. The variation in the stellar light affects the amount of dust-scattered light with the same period and amplitude ratio, but with a phase lag that depends on the absolute size of the shell. We measured this phase lag by observing the star R Scl and the dust-scattered stellar light from the shell at five epochs between June - December 2017. By observing in polarised light, we imaged the shell in the plane of the sky, removing any uncertainty due to geometrical effects. The phase lag gives the absolute size of the shell, and together with the angular size of the shell directly gives the absolute distance to R Sculptoris. We measured a phase lag between the stellar variations and the variation in the shell of 40.0 +/- 4.0 days. The angular size of the shell is measured to be 19.1 arcsec +/- 0.7 arcsec. Combined, this gives an absolute distance to R Sculptoris of 361 +/- 44 pc. We independently determined the absolute distance to R Scl with an uncertainty of 12%. The estimated distance is consistent with previous estimates, but is one of the most accurate distances to the source to date. The S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star $\pi^{1}$ Gruis has a known companion at a separation of $\approx$400 AU. The envelope structure, including an equatorial torus and a fast bipolar outflow, is rarely seen in the AGB phase and is particularly unexpected in such a wide binary system. Therefore a second, closer companion has been suggested, but the evidence is not conclusive. The new ALMA $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=3-2 data, together with previously published $^{12}$CO $J$=2-1 data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA), and the $^{12}$CO $J$=5-4 and $J$=9-8 lines observed with Herschel/Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI), is modeled with the 3D non-LTE radiative transfer code SHAPEMOL. The data analysis clearly confirms the torus-bipolar structure. The 3D model of the CSE that satisfactorily reproduces the data consists of three kinematic components: a radially expanding torus with velocity slowly increasing from 8 to 13 km s$^{-1}$ along the equator plane; a radially expanding component at the center with a constant velocity of 14 km s$^{-1}$; and a fast, bipolar outflow with velocity proportionally increasing from 14 km s$^{-1}$ at the base up to 100 km s$^{-1}$ at the tip, following a linear radial dependence. The results are used to estimate an average mass-loss rate during the creation of the torus of 7.7$\times$10$^{-7}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The total mass and linear momentum of the fast outflow are estimated at 7.3$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ and 9.6$\times$10$^{37}$ g cm s$^{-1}$, respectively. The momentum of the outflow is in excess (by a factor of about 20) of what could be generated by radiation pressure alone, in agreement with recent findings for more evolved sources. The best-fit model also suggests a $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO abundance ratio of 50. Possible shaping scenarios for the gas envelope are discussed

The CO(J=3-2) emission from the CSE of the binary S-type AGB star W Aql has been observed at subarcsecond resolution using ALMA. The aim of this paper is to investigate the wind properties of the AGB star and to analyse how the known companion has shaped the CSE. The average mass-loss rate during the creation of the detected CSE is estimated through modelling, using the ALMA brightness distribution and previously published single-dish measurements as observational constraints. The ALMA observations are presented and compared to the results from a 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) binary interaction model with the same properties as the W Aql system and with two different orbital eccentricities. Three-dimensional radiative transfer modelling is performed and the response of the interferometer is modelled and discussed. The estimated average mass-loss rate of W~Aql agrees with previous results. The size of the emitting region is consistent with photodissociation models. The CO(J=3-2) emission is dominated by a smooth component overlayed with two weak arc patterns with different separations. The larger pattern is predicted by the binary interaction model with separations of 10" and therefore likely due to the known companion. It is consistent with a binary orbit with low eccentricity. The smaller separation pattern is asymmetric and coincides with the dust distribution, but the separation timescale (200 yrs) is not consistent with any known process of the system. The separation of the known companions of the system is large enough to not have a very strong effect on the circumstellar morphology. The density contrast across the envelope of a binary with an even larger separation will not be easily detectable, even with ALMA, unless the orbit is strongly asymmetric or the AGB star has a much larger mass-loss rate., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Aims. Our goal is to characterize the intermediate age, detached shell carbon star U Antliae morphologically and physically in order to study the mass-loss evolution after a possible thermal pulse. Methods. High spatial resolution ALMA observations of unprecedented quality in thermal CO lines allow us to derive first critical spatial and temporal scales and constrain modeling efforts to estimate mass-loss rates for both the present day as well as the ejection period of the detached shell. Results. The detached shell is remarkably thin, overall spherically symmetric, and shows a barely resolved filamentary substructure possibly caused by instabilities in the interaction zone of winds with different outflow velocities. The expansion age of the detached shell is of the order of 2700 years and its overall width indicates a high expansion-velocity and high mass-loss period of only a few hundred years at an average mass-loss rate of $\approx$ 10$^{-5}$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The post-high-mass-loss-rate-epoch evolution of U Ant shows a significant decline to a substantially lower gas expansion velocity and a mass-loss rate amounting to 4$\times$10$^{-8}$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, at present being consistent with evolutionary changes as predicted for the period between thermal pulses.

Through a survey of (sub-)millimetre emission lines of various sulphur-bearing molecules, we aim to determine which molecules are the primary carriers of sulphur in different types of AGB stars. In this paper, the first in a series, we investigate the occurrence of H$_2$S in AGB circumstellar envelopes and determine its abundance, where possible. We have surveyed 20 AGB stars with a range of mass-loss rates and of different chemical types using the APEX telescope to search for rotational transition lines of five key sulphur-bearing molecules: CS, SiS, SO, SO$_2$ and H$_2$S. Here we present our results for H$_2$S, including detections, non-detections and detailed radiative transfer modelling of the detected lines. We compare results based on different descriptions of the molecular excitation of H$_2$S and different abundance distributions, including those derived from chemical modelling results. We detected H$_2$S towards five AGB stars, all of which have high mass-loss rates of $\dot{M}\geq 5\times 10^{-6}M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and are oxygen-rich. H$_2$S was not detected towards the carbon or S-type stars that fall in a similar mass-loss range. For the stars in our sample with detections, we find peak o-H$_2$S abundances relative to H$_2$ between $4\times 10^{-7}$ and $2.5\times 10^{-5}$. Overall, we conclude that H$_2$S can play a significant role in oxygen-rich AGB stars with higher mass-loss rates, but is unlikely to play a key role in stars of other chemical types or the lower mass-loss rate oxygen-rich stars. For two sources, V1300 Aql and GX Mon, H$_2$S is most likely the dominant sulphur-bearing molecule in the circumstellar envelope., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted in A&A

(abbreviated) We aim to constrain the dust formation histories in the winds of oxygen-rich AGB stars. We have obtained ALMA observations with a spatial resolution of 120x150 mas tracing the dust formation region of a low mass-loss rate and a high mass-loss rate AGB star, R Dor and IK Tau. Emission line profiles of AlO, AlOH and AlCl are detected and are used to derive a lower limit of atomic aluminium incorporated in molecules. We show that the gas-phase aluminium chemistry is completely different in both stars, with a remarkable difference in the AlO and AlOH abundance stratification. The amount of aluminium locked up in these 3 molecules is small, <=1.1e-7, for both stars, i.e. only <=2% of the total aluminium budget. This leaves ample of room for aluminium to be incorporated in grains. A fundamental result is that AlO and AlOH, being the direct precursors of alumina grains, are detected well beyond the onset of the dust condensation proving that the aluminium oxide condensation cycle is not fully efficient. The ALMA observations allow us to quantitatively assess the current generation of theoretical dynamical-chemical models for AGB winds. We discuss how the current proposed scenario of aluminium dust condensation for low mass-loss rate AGB stars at a distance of ~1.5 Rstar, in particular for the stars R Dor and W Hya, poses a challenge if one wishes to explain both the dust spectral features in the spectral energy distribution (SED), in interferometric data, and in polarized light signal. In particular, the estimated grain temperature of Al2O3 is too high for the grains to retain their amorphous structure. We investigate the use of 183 GHz H2O masers for characterization of the physical conditions and mass loss process in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. We used APEX SEPIA Band 5 to observe the 183 GHz H2O line towards 2 Red Supergiant and 3 Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. Simultaneously, we observed lines in 28SiO v0, 1, 2 and 3, and for 29SiO v0 and 1. We detected the 183 GHz H2O line towards all the stars with peak flux densities greater than 100 Jy, including a new detection from VY CMa. Towards all 5 targets, the water line had indications of being due to maser emission and had higher peak flux densities than for the SiO lines. The SiO lines appear to originate from both thermal and maser processes. Comparison with simulations and models indicate that 183 GHz maser emission is likely to extend to greater radii in the circumstellar envelopes than SiO maser emission and to similar or greater radii than water masers at 22, 321 and 325 GHz. We speculate that a prominent blue-shifted feature in the W Hya 183 GHz spectrum is amplifying the stellar continuum, and is located at a similar distance from the star as mainline OH maser emission. From a comparison of the individual polarizations, we find that the SiO maser linear polarization fraction of several features exceeds the maximum fraction allowed under standard maser assumptions and requires strong anisotropic pumping of the maser transition and strongly saturated maser emission. The low polarization fraction of the H2O maser however, fits with the expectation for a non-saturated maser. 183 GHz H2O masers can provide strong probes of the mass loss process of evolved stars. Higher angular resolution observations of this line using ALMA Band 5 will enable detailed investigation of the emission location in circumstellar envelopes and can also provide information on magnetic field strength and structure., Comment: 11 pages, accepted by A&A. The detection and study of molecular gas in born-again stars would be of great importance to understand their composition and chemical evolution. In addition, the molecular emission would be an invaluable tool to explore the physical conditions, kinematics and formation of asymmetric structures in the circumstellar envelopes of these evolved stars. However, until now, all attempts to detect molecular emission from the cool material around born-again stars have failed. We carried out observations using the APEX and IRAM 30m telescopes to search for molecular emission toward four well studied born-again stars, V4334 Sgr, V605 Aql, A30 and A78, that are thought to represent an evolutionary sequence. We detected for the first time emission from HCN and H$^{13}$CN molecules toward V4334 Sgr, and CO emission in V605 Aql. No molecular emission was detected above the noise level toward A30 and A78. A first estimate of the H$^{12}$CN/H$^{13}$CN abundance ratio in the circumstellar environment of V4334 Sgr is $\approx$3, which is similar to the value of the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio measured from other observations. We derived a rotational temperature of $T_{\rm rot}$=13$\pm1$ K, and a total column density of $N_{{\rm HCN}}$=1.6$\pm0.1\times$10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ for V4334 Sgr. This result sets a lower limit on the amount of hydrogen that was ejected into the wind during the born-again event of this source. Abridged. The 12CO/13CO ratio in the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars has been extensively used as the tracer of the photospheric 12C/13C ratio. However, spatially-resolved ALMA observations of R Scl, a carbon rich AGB star, have shown that the 12CO/13CO ratio is not consistent over the entire CSE. Hence, it can not necessarily be used as a tracer of the 12C/13C ratio. The most likely hypothesis to explain the observed discrepancy between the 12CO/13CO and 12C/13C ratios is CO isotopologue selective photodissociation by UV radiation. Unlike the CO isotopologue ratio, the HCN isotopologue ratio is not affected by UV radiation. Therefore, HCN isotopologue ratios can be used as the tracer of the atomic C ratio in UV irradiated regions. We have performed a detailed non-LTE excitation analysis of circumstellar H12CN and H13CN line emission around R Scl, observed with ALMA and APEX, using a radiative transfer code, ALI. The spatial extent of the molecular distribution for both isotopologues is constrained based on the spatially resolved H13CN(4-3) ALMA observations. We find fractional abundances of H12CN/H2 = (5.0 +\- 2.0) x 10^{-5} and H13CN/H2 = (1.9 +\- 0.4) x 10^{-6} in the inner wind (r < (2.0 +\- 0.25) x 10^{15} cm) of R Scl. The derived circumstellar isotopologue ratio of H12CN/H13CN = 26.3 +\- 11.9 is consistent with the photospheric ratio of 12C/13C ~ 19 \pm 6. We show that the circumstellar H12CN/H13CN ratio traces the photospheric 12C/13C ratio. These results support the previously proposed explanation that CO isotopologue selective-shielding is the main factor responsible for the observed discrepancy between 12C/13C and 12CO/13CO ratios in the inner CSE of R Scl. Aluminium monoxide, AlO, is likely efficiently depleted from the gas around oxygen-rich evolved stars to form alumina clusters and dust seeds. Its presence in the extended atmospheres of evolved stars has been derived from optical spectroscopy. More recently, AlO gas was also detected at long wavelengths around the supergiant VY CMa and the oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star o Cet (Mira A). In search of AlO, we mined data obtained with APEX, the IRAM 30m telescope, Herschel/HIFI, SMA, and ALMA, which were primarily aimed at studying other molecular species. We report here on observations of AlO towards a sample of eight oxygen-rich AGB stars in different rotational transitions, up to seven for some stars. We present definite detections of one rotational transition of AlO for o Cet and R Aqr, and tentative detections of one transition for R Dor and o Cet, and two for IK Tau and W Hya. The presented spectra of WX Psc, R Cas, and TX Cam show no signature of AlO. For o Cet, R Aqr, and IK Tau, we find that the AlO(N=9-8) emission likely traces the inner parts of the wind, out to only a few tens of AU, where the gas has not yet reached its terminal velocity. The conclusive detections of AlO emission in the case of o Cet and R Aqr confirm the presence of AlO gas in outflows of AGB stars. The tentative detections further support this. Since most of the observations presented in this study were obtained with stronger emission from other species than AlO in mind, observations with higher sensitivity in combination with high angular resolution will improve our understanding of the presence and behaviour of AlO. From the current data sets we cannot firmly conclude whether there is a direct correlation between the wind properties and the detection rate of AlO emission. Herschel FIR imaging and spectroscopy were taken at several epochs to probe the central point source and the extended environment of V838 Mon. PACS and SPIRE maps were used to obtain photometry of the near and far dust around V838 Mon. Fitting reveals 0.5-0.6 solar masses of ~19K dust in the environs (~2.7pc) surrounding the star. The surface-integrated infrared flux (signifying the thermal light echo) and derived dust properties do not vary significantly between the epochs. We also fit the SED of the point source. As the peak of the SED lies outside the Herschel spectral range, it is only by incorporating data from other observatories and epochs that we can perform useful fitting; with this we explicitly assume no evolution of the point source between the epochs. We find warm dust with a temperature of ~300K distributed over a radius of 150-200AU. PACS and SPIRE spectra were also used to detect emission lines from the extended environment around the star. We fit the far-infrared lines of CO arising from the point source, from an extended environment around V838 Mon. Assuming a model of a spherical shell for this gas, we find that the CO appears to arise from two temperature zones: a cold zone (Tkin ~18K) that could be associated with the ISM or possibly with a cold layer in the outermost part of the shell, and a warm (Tkin ~400K) zone that is associated with the extended environment of V838 Mon within a region of radius of ~210AU. The SiO lines arise from a warm/hot zone. We did not fit the lines of H2O as they are far more dependent on the model assumed.

We report the serendipitous detection with ALMA of the vibrationally-excited pure-rotational CO transition $v=1, J=3-2$ towards five asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, $o$ Cet, R Aqr, R Scl, W Aql, and $\pi^1$ Gru. The observed lines are formed in the poorly-understood region located between the stellar surface and the region where the wind starts, the so-called warm molecular layer. We successfully reproduce the observed lines profiles using a simple model. We constrain the extents, densities, and kinematics of the region where the lines are produced. R Aqr and R Scl show inverse P-Cygni line profiles which indicate infall of material onto the stars. The line profiles of $o$ Cet and R Scl show variability. The serendipitous detection towards these five sources shows that vibrationally-excited rotational lines can be observed towards a large number of nearby AGB stars using ALMA. We use high-angular-resolution images obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL to study the photosphere, the warm molecular layer, and the inner wind of the close-by oxygen-rich AGB star R Doradus. We present observations in filters V, cntH$\alpha$, and cnt820 and investigate the surface brightness distribution of the star and of the polarised light produced in the inner envelope. Thanks to second-epoch observations in cntH$\alpha$, we are able to see variability on the stellar photosphere. We find that in the first epoch the surface brightness of R Dor is asymmetric in V and cntH$\alpha$, the filters where molecular opacity is stronger, while in cnt820 the surface brightness is closer to being axisymmetric. The second-epoch observations in cntH$\alpha$ show that the morphology of R Dor changes completely in a timespan of 48 days to a more axisymmetric and compact configuration. The polarised intensity is asymmetric in all epochs and varies by between a factor of 2.3 and 3.7 with azimuth for the different images. We fit the radial profile of the polarised intensity using a spherically symmetric model and a parametric description of the dust density profile, $\rho(r)=\rho_\circ r^{-n}$. On average, we find exponents of $- 4.5 \pm 0.5$ that correspond to a much steeper density profile than that of a wind expanding at constant velocity. The dust densities we derive imply an upper limit for the dust-to-gas ratio of $\sim 2\times10^{-4}$ at 5.0 $R_\star$. Given the uncertainties in observations and models, this value is consistent with the minimum values required by wind-driving models for the onset of a wind, of $\sim 3.3\times10^{-4}$. However, if the steep density profile we find extends to larger distances from the star, the dust-to-gas ratio will quickly become too small for the wind of R Dor to be driven by the grains that produce the scattered light., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

(abreviated) We aim to study the inner-wind structure (R<250 Rstar) of the well-known red supergiant VY CMa. We analyse high spatial resolution (~0".24x0".13) ALMA Science Verification (SV) data in band 7 in which four thermal emission lines of gaseous sodium chloride (NaCl) are present at high signal-to-noise ratio. For the first time, the NaCl emission in the inner wind region of VY CMa is spatially resolved. The ALMA observations reveal the contribution of up to four different spatial regions. The NaCl emission pattern is different compared to the dust continuum and TiO2 emission already analysed from the ALMA SV data. The emission can be reconciled with an axisymmetric geometry, where the lower density polar/rotation axis has a position angle of ~50 degrees measured from north to east. However, this picture can not capture the full morphological diversity, and discrete mass ejection events need to be invoked to explain localized higher-density regions. The velocity traced by the gaseous NaCl line profiles is significantly lower than the average wind terminal velocity, and much slower than some of the fastest mass ejections, signalling a wide range of characteristic speeds for the mass loss. Gaseous NaCl is detected far beyond the main dust condensation region. Realising the refractory nature of this metal halide, this hints at a chemical process preventing all NaCl from condensing onto dust grains. We show that in the case of the ratio of the surface binding temperature to the grain temperature being ~50, only some 10% of NaCl remains in gaseous form, while for lower values of this ratio thermal desorption efficiently evaporates NaCl. Photodesorption by stellar photons seems not to be a viable explanation for the detection of gaseous NaCl at 220 Rstar from the central star, and instead, we propose shock-induced sputtering driven by localized mass ejection events as alternative., Comment: 17 pages, Astronomy & Astrophysics

We aim to constrain the temperature and velocity structures, and H2O abundances in the winds of a sample of M-type AGB stars. We further aim to determine the effect of H2O line cooling on the energy balance in the inner circumstellar envelope. We use two radiative-transfer codes to model molecular emission lines of CO and H2O towards four M-type AGB stars. We focus on spectrally resolved observations of CO and H2O from HIFI. The observations are complemented by ground-based CO observations, and spectrally unresolved CO and H2O observations with PAC. The observed line profiles constrain the velocity structure throughout the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs), while the CO intensities constrain the temperature structure in the CSEs. The H2O observations constrain the o-H2O and p-H2O abundances relative to H2. Finally, the radiative-transfer modelling allows to solve the energy balance in the CSE, in principle including also H2O line cooling. The fits to the line profiles only set moderate constraints on the velocity profile, indicating shallower acceleration profiles in the winds of M-type AGB stars than predicted by dynamical models, while the CO observations effectively constrain the temperature structure. Including H2O line cooling in the energy balance was only possible for the low-mass-loss-rate objects in the sample, and required an ad hoc adjustment of the dust velocity profile in order to counteract extreme cooling in the inner CSE. H2O line cooling was therefore excluded from the models. The constraints set on the temperature profile by the CO lines nevertheless allowed us to derive H2O abundances. The derived H2O abundances confirm previous estimates and are consistent with chemical models. However, the uncertainties in the derived abundances are relatively large, in particular for p-H2O, and consequently the derived o/p-H2O ratios are not well constrained., Comment: Accepted May 2016

The sulphur compounds SO and SO$_2$ have not been widely studied in the circumstellar envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. By presenting and modelling a large number of SO and SO$_2$ lines in the low mass-loss rate M-type AGB star R Dor, and modelling the available lines of those molecules in a further four M-type AGB stars, we aim to determine their circumstellar abundances and distributions. We use a detailed radiative transfer analysis based on the accelerated lambda iteration method to model circumstellar SO and SO$_2$ line emission and molecular data files for both SO and SO$_2$ that are more extensive than those previously available. Using 17 SO lines and 98 SO2 lines to constrain our models for R Dor, we find an SO abundance of 6.7x10$^{-6}$ and an SO$_2$ abundance of 5x10$^{-6}$ with both species having high abundances close to the star. We also modelled $^{34}$SO and found an abundance of 3.1x10$^{-7}$, giving an $^{32}$SO/$^{34}$SO ratio of 21.6. We derive similar results for the circumstellar SO and SO$_2$ abundances and their distributions for the low mass-loss rate object W Hya. For these stars, the circumstellar SO and SO$_2$ abundances are much higher than predicted by chemical models and these two species may account for all available sulphur. For the higher mass-loss rate stars, we find shell-like SO distributions with peak abundances that decrease and peak abundance radii that increase with increasing mass-loss rate. The positions of the peak SO abundance agree very well with the photodissociation radii of H$_2$O. We find evidence that SO is most likely through the photodissociation of H$_2$O and the subsequent reaction between S and OH. The S-bearing parent molecule appears not to be H$_2$S. The SO$_2$ models suggest an origin close to the star for this species, also disagreeing with current chemical models., Comment: 25 pages

Thermal pulses are fundamental to the chemical evolution of AGB stars and their circumstellar envelopes. A further consequence of thermal pulses is the formation of detached shells of gas and dust around the star. We aim to determine the physical properties of the detached gas shell around R Sculptoris, in particular the shell mass and temperature, and to constrain the evolution of the mass-loss rate during and after a thermal pulse. We analyse CO(1-0), CO(2-1), and CO(3-2) emission, observed by. The spatial resolution of the ALMA data allows us to separate the detached shell emission from the extended emission inside the shell. We perform radiative transfer modelling of both components to determine the shell properties and the post-pulse mass-loss properties. The ALMA data show a gas shell with a radius of 19.5" expanding at 14.3km/s. The different scales probed by the ALMA Cycle 0 array show that the shell must be entirely filled with gas, contrary to the idea of a detached shell. The comparison to single-dish spectra and radiative transfer modelling confirms this. We derive a shell mass of 4.5e-3 Msun with a temperature of 50K. Typical timescales for thermal pulses imply a pulse mass-loss rate of 2.3e-5 Msun/yr. For the post-pulse mass-loss rate, we find evidence for a gradual decline of the mass-loss rate, with an average value of 1.6e-5 Msun/yr. The total amount of mass lost since the last thermal pulse is 0.03 Msun, a factor four higher compared to classical models, with a sharp decline in mass-loss rate immediately after the pulse. We find that the mass-loss rate after a thermal pulse has to decline more slowly than generally expected from models of thermal pulses. This may cause the star to lose significantly more mass during a thermal pulse cycle, which affects the chemical evolution of the star and the interstellar medium., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted by A&A

Titanium dioxide, TiO$_2$, is a refractory species that could play a crucial role in the dust-condensation sequence around oxygen-rich evolved stars. To date, gas phase TiO$_2$ has been detected only in the complex environment of the red supergiant VY CMa. We aim to constrain the distribution and excitation of TiO$_2$ around VY CMa in order to clarify its role in dust formation. We analyse spectra and channel maps for TiO$_2$ extracted from ALMA science verification data. We detect 15 transitions of TiO$_2$, and spatially resolve the emission for the first time. The maps demonstrate a highly clumpy, anisotropic outflow in which the TiO$_2$ emission likely traces gas exposed to the stellar radiation field. A roughly east-west oriented, accelerating bipolar-like structure is found, of which the blue component runs into and breaks up around a solid continuum component. A distinct tail to the south-west is seen for some transitions, consistent with features seen in the optical and near-infrared. We find that a significant fraction of TiO$_2$ remains in the gas phase outside the dust-formation zone and suggest that this species might play only a minor role in the dust-condensation process around extreme oxygen-rich evolved stars like VY CMa., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 25 pages, 20 figures

Context: AGB stars lose a large percentage of their mass in a dust-driven wind. This creates a circumstellar envelope, which can be studied through thermal dust emission and molecular emission lines. In the case of high mass-loss rates, this study is complicated by the high optical depths and the intricate coupling between gas and dust radiative transfer characteristics. An important aspect of the physics of gas-dust interactions is the strong influence of dust on the excitation of several molecules, including H2O. Aims: The dust and gas content of the envelope surrounding the high mass-loss rate OH/IR star OH 127.8+0.0, as traced by Herschel observations, is studied, with a focus on the H2O content and the dust-to-gas ratio. We report detecting a large number of H2O vapor emission lines up to J = 9 in the Herschel data, for which we present the measured line strengths. Methods: The treatments of both gas and dust species are combined using two numerical radiative transfer codes. The method is illustrated for both low and high mass-loss-rate sources. Specifically, we discuss different ways of assessing the dust-to-gas ratio: 1) from the dust thermal emission spectrum and the CO molecular gas line strengths; 2) from the momentum transfer from dust to gas and the measured gas terminal velocity; and 3) from the determination of the required amount of dust to reproduce H2O lines for a given H2O vapor abundance. These three diagnostics probe different zones of the outflow, for the first time allowing an investigation of a possible radial dependence of the dust-to-gas ratio. Results: ... We report on the discovery of strong intensity variations in the high rotational lines of abundant molecular species towards the archetypical circumstellar envelope of IRC+10216. The observations have been carried out with the HIFI instrument on board \textit{Herschel}\thanks{\textit{Herschel} is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA} and with the IRAM\thanks{This work was based on observations carried out with the IRAM 30-meter telescope. IRAM is supported by INSU/CNRS (France), MPG (Germany) and IGN (Spain)} 30-m telescope. They cover several observing periods spreading over 3 years. The line intensity variations for molecules produced in the external layers of the envelope most probably result from time variations in the infrared pumping rates. We analyze the main implications this discovery has on the interpretation of molecular line emission in the envelopes of Mira-type stars. Radiative transfer calculations have to take into account both the time variability of infrared pumping and the possible variation of the dust and gas temperatures with stellar phase in order to reproduce the observation of molecular lines at different epochs. The effect of gas temperature variations with stellar phase could be particularly important for lines produced in the innermost regions of the envelope. Each layer of the circumstellar envelope sees the stellar light radiation with a different lag time (phase). Our results show that this effect must be included in the models. The sub-mm and FIR lines of AGB stars cannot anymore be considered as safe intensity calibrators.

The processes leading to dust formation and the subsequent role it plays in driving mass loss in cool evolved stars is an area of intense study. Here we present high resolution ALMA Science Verification data of the continuum emission around the highly evolved oxygen-rich red supergiant VY CMa. These data enable us to study the dust in its inner circumstellar environment at a spatial resolution of 129 mas at 321 GHz and 59 mas at 658 GHz, thus allowing us to trace dust on spatial scales down to 11 R$_{\star}$ (71 AU). Two prominent dust components are detected and resolved. The brightest dust component, C, is located 334 mas (61 R$_{\star}$) South East of the star and has a dust mass of at least $2.5\times 10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. It has a dust emissivity spectral index of $\beta =-0.1$ at its peak, implying that it is optically thick at these frequencies with a cool core of $T_{d}\lesssim 100$ K. Interestingly, not a single molecule in the ALMA data has emission close to the peak of this massive dust clump. The other main dust component, VY, is located at the position of the star and contains a total dust mass of $4.0 \times 10^{-5} $M$_{\odot}$. It also contains a weaker dust feature extending over $60$ R$_{\star}$ to the North with the total component having a typical dust emissivity spectral index of $\beta =0.7$. We find that at least $17\%$ of the dust mass around VY CMa is located in clumps ejected within a more quiescent roughly spherical stellar wind, with a quiescent dust mass loss rate of $5 \times 10^{-6}$ M$_{\odot} $yr$^{-1}$. The anisotropic morphology of the dust indicates a continuous, directed mass loss over a few decades, suggesting that this mass loss cannot be driven by large convection cells alone.
