1. The impact of competitive debate on managing the conflict communication strategies of Italian students

Competitive debate has often been associated with the acquisition of valuable competences. However, some studies have shown that debating leads to polarization and, in turn, to aggressive communication and the escalation of conflicts. Therefore, since competitive debate is a widespread methodology still relatively novel in Italy, it is crucial to ask whether it is effective for acquiring communication and conflict management competences. Starting from the theoretical framework of the dual concern model, the hypotheses involve attitude changes among the participants concerning the adoption of dominant and integrative communication strategies in relation to their classmates. The outcomes of this quasi-experimental design demonstrated that participation in competitive debate does not promote dominant communication and instead leads to the adoption of integrative communication.
